** Michael J. Asada

MASON CITY — Michael J. Asada, 49, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center from complications of multiple sclerosis.

Funeral services were held Monday (Feb. 9, 1998) at the Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua, Wis., with Rev. Dr. Steven Fossum officiating. Burial was in the Chapel Hill Cemetery at LaFarge, Wis.

Michael J. Asada was born Dec. 4, 1948, in Racine, Wis., the son of Frank and Patricia (McCoy) Asada. He served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the University of Long Beach in California. He had been a professional landscaper and was a teacher before being disabled. He had been a resident of the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City. He had enjoyed surfing, fishing, chess and classical music.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Asada, of Mason City; four sons, Frankie Asada of Santa Ana, Calif., Steven, Sean and Daniel of Forest City; one daughter, Michelle Quimby of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Katie Homentowski of Citrus Heights, Calif., Terry Koett of Parker, Ariz.; and a special friend, Linda Thompson of Mason City.

** Marie Proctor

ROCKWELL — Marie Proctor, 84, of Rockwell, died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) at the Rockwell Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Reformed Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Michael Ploeger officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Marie Proctor was born Sept. 1, 1913, at Latimer.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Proctor, Ankeny, and Dale Proctor, of Manson; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Huntbatch, Rockwell, and Viola Jaspersen, Thornton; and one brother, Else Dannen, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sons and one brother.

** Howard Glen Wagner

HAMPTON — Howard Glen Wagner, 91, formerly of Thornton, died Sunday (Feb. 8, 1998) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Geneva, with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Ackley.

Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, 306 Central Ave E., Hampton.

Howard Glen Wagner was born on Nov. 3, 1906, at Faulkner, Iowa, the son of Hezekiah and Fannie (Dale) Wagner. He attended country school and completed the eighth grade. After helping at home for a few years, he attended one term at Ellsworth Junior College, Iowa Falls.

He and his brother, Glee, then farmed together until Howard began working for Dentel's Grocery Store in Faulkner. There he clerked, did electrician work, etc. for many years.

Howard was united in marriage to Carolyn Schwinger on Jan. 18, 1932, in Hampton. She now resides in Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

He then worked for the Franklin County Road Maintenance Dept. until he returned to farming between Geneva and Hampton in 1945. He retired in 1971 to Thornton.

Howard enjoyed camping and spending time with his family. In addition, Howard was an avid gardener and woodworker, having made 10 granddaughter clocks and one grandfather clock plus numerous other pieces of beautiful furniture for his loved ones.

He loved to help his neighbors and could be found mowing lawns, fixing bikes for the neighborhood children, fishing with the children, making reed whistles, etc.

In September of 1984, Howard and Carolyn received a certificate of appreciation for devoted and invaluable service rendered to the Thornton community.

Howard served as president of the Geneva School Board, was a member of the NFO and a member of the United Methodist Church, Geneva.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Carolyn Wagner, of the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake; his children, Shirley and Darwin Munier, Des Moines; Mildred Stevenson, Spokane, Wash.; Dean and Mary Wagner, Waterloo; Merle and Joyce Wagner, Latimer; Fanny and Martin Hansen, Clear Lake; and Dale and Patti Wagner, Pea Ridge, Ark.; 26 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren; brothers, Glee and Thelma Wagner, Hampton; Joe Wagner and Russell and Helen Wagner, Geneva; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, David in April 1954 and James in February 1990; a sister, Faith Smith; and a brother, Kenneth.

** George R. Willis

MASON CITY — George R. Willis, 71, of 79 Registry Park, died Monday (Feb. 9, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

George R. Willis was born July 17, 1926, at Red Wing, Minn., the son of Delbert and Julia E. (Krupicka) Willis.

On June 6, 1962, he married Ardis Lockrem at Sioux Falls, S.D.

George loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Ardis Willis, Mason City; five daughters, Roxanne Ferch, Lonnie Halama and her husband, Harold, Rhonda Abendroth, Jayanna Long and Sandra Willis, all of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Delbert W. Willis, Plymouth; two sisters, Florence Melbourne, Montesano, Wash., and Pauline Kavars, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Delbert L. Willis; one daughter, Sharon E. Lane; one sister; and one brother.

** Leonard 'Ding' Ouverson

CLEAR LAKE — Mr. Leonard "Ding" Ouverson, 87, of 710 S. Eighth St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Feb. 9, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Dennis Ganz of the Church of Christ, Fertile, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and again after 9 a.m. on Thursday.

The family suggests memorials to the Leonard Ouverson Memorial fund.

Leonard was born June 22, 1910, at Fertile, the son of Martin and Christina (Erikson) Ouverson. There he was raised and attended school. On Sept. 13, 1936, he married Ellen Mae Westover at St. Patrick's Parish, Clear Lake. They farmed south of Clear Lake for 23 years. They moved into town and Ding worked for Clear Lake Shipping Association until that closed. Then he went to work for Cerro Gordo County until his retirement in 1979.

Ding's enjoyments were his garden, playing cards, fishing, roller skating and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Mae Ouverson, Clear Lake; one son, Jay Ouverson and his wife, Marty, Webster City; one daughter, Dianne Miller and her husband, Marlin, Clear Lake; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Ouverson and his wife, Ruth, of Fertile, and Don Ouverson of Marshalltown; and one sister, Edna Hill of Forest City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Irene Wolters.

** Kathleen M. Specht

FORT DODGE — Kathleen M. Specht, 64, 2765 19th Ave N., died Monday (Feb. 9, 1998) at Trinity Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laufersweiler & Sievers Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Harry McAlpine officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Maryhill.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at the chapel of Laufersweiler & Sievers Funeral Home, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil for the deceased at 7 p.m.

Kathleen Marie Wagner was born Oct. 3, 1933, in Havelock. She attended rural schools and graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Pocahontas in 1951.

Following her education, she moved to Des Moines and was employed at Mercy Hospital. She later worked for Meredith Publishing Co.

She married Donald Specht in 1955 in Pocahontas. They lived in Cherokee. In 1956, they moved to Fort Dodge. In 1966, they moved to Mason City, and in 1979, they returned to Fort Dodge

She was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Memorials may be given to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the church of the giver's choice.

Survivors include her husband, Donald; son, Steven, Fort Dodge; two grandchildren; her mother, Blanche Wagner, Pocahontas; brothers, Richard, San Diego, Calif.; Virgil, of Pocahontas; and Loren, Dallas Center; sisters, Madonna Kakacek, Pocahontas; Mary Lee Phelan and Juanita McCabe, both of Urbandale.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Wagner.

** Lois Pearl Andersen

MASON CITY — Lois Pearl Andersen, 85, formerly of 1306 S. Mass. Ave., Mason City, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen, pastor at Good Shepherd Healthcare Center, officiating.

Visitation will begin after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., until the time of the graveside service.

Lois Pearl Andersen was born June 13, 1912, in St. Paul, Minn., daughter of Steven and Grace (Beebe) Burgess.

She married Lars Peter Andersen on July 12, 1948, in Park Rapids, Minn.

Lois went to school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1931. She worked at various jobs in Mason City until retiring in 1962.

Lois enjoyed fishing, traveling and was an avid reader. Lois appreciated the care she received from Amicare and Good Shepherd caretakers.

Survivors include seven sisters-in-law, Grace Burgess, Philadelphia, Pa.; Lily Imlay, Clear Lake; Betty Hard, Titonka; Ruth Andersen, Big Stone City, S.D.; Marian Andersen, Mason City; Beulah Andersen, Clear Lake; and Rose Andersen, Mason City; one brother-in-law, Ernest Andersen and his wife, Marion, Mason City; three nephews, Steven Burgess, Pensacola, Fla.; Robert Burgess, Philadelphia, Pa.; and Frank Burgess, Aston, Pa.; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Norman Burgess; and a stepson, Richard Andersen.

MASON CITY — Irene Gazes, 87, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) in Reno, Nev.

BANCROFT — Dorothy Kahler, 90, of Bancroft, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) at the Trinity Regional Hospital, Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church, with the Rev. Cecil Friedmann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft.

Dorothy was born on March 22, 1907, in Bancroft.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Alva Kahler, of Bancroft; five sons, Ben Kahler, of Seneca, Vernon Kahler, of West Des Moines, Arthur Kahler, of Burt, Joseph Kahler, of Burt, and Robert Kahler, of Bancroft; three daughters, Linda Kolstad, of Long Prairie, Minn., Rose Burmeister, of Fort Dodge; and Gertrude Thomas, of Shellsburg; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Priscilla Heiar, of Bancroft.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, two brothers and four sisters.

** Leuie Korte

ALLISON — Leuie Korte, 72, of Allison, died Monday (Feb. 9, 1998) at the Allison Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Allison United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Eileen Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Allison.

Leuie Korte was born Aug. 24, 1925, rural Ackley.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret DeBower, Bristow; and Susan Zierath, Parkersburg; two sons, Scot Korte, Allison, and Leon Korte, Vermillion, S.D.; two sisters, Francis Eilderts, Aplington, and Marian Bietelman, Monticello, Ill.; three brothers, Herman Korte, Dumont; Elmer Korte, Boone; and John Korte, Wyoming, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister.

** Bert Frey

BELMOND — Bert Frey, 86, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Alexander. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

** Anna V. Kobbermann

CHARLES CITY — Anna V. Kobbermann, 86, 700 Wisconsin St., died Monday (Feb. 9, 1998) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, U.S. Highway 18 and Clark Streets, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with rosary by St. Mary's Circle at 3 p.m. and a 7 p.m. Scripture wake service, followed by the rosary. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home.

** Josephine S. Charlson

LAKE MILLS — Josephine S. Charlson, 93, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

** Nate Studer

WESLEY — Nate Studer, 81, of Wesley, died Wednesday (Feb. 11, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wesley, with the Rev. Paul Bormann and the Rev. John Cain as concelebrants. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Wesley, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 3 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Nate Studer was born Jan. 31, 1917, at Wesley.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene, Wesley; and his children, Tom Studer, Virginia, Ill., Mike Studer, Wesley; Mary Thilges, Algona; Dale Studer, Creston; Wayne Studer, Wesley; and Craig Studer, Wesley; 21 grandchildren; two brothers, Mark J. Studer and Ben J. Studer, both of Wesley; two sisters, Zita Welter, Montgomery City, Mo.; and Bernadette Cassel, Los Angeles, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one grandson, one brother and three sisters.

** Arnold G. Sahr

MASON CITY — Arnold G. Sahr, 72, of 741 S. Illinois Ave., Apt 29, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Joel Dahlen of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mason City, officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Arnold's family will be greeting friends from 9:30 a.m. to the time of services at the funeral chapel on Friday.

Arnold G. Sahr was born March 19, 1925, at Albert Lea, the son of Leonard G. and Margaret Sarah (Donohue) Sahr.

In 1945 he married Beulah Pedersen at Wadena, Minn. They later divorced.

In 1959 he married Crystal Elaine Follmuth at Albert Lea, Minn. They also later divorced.

Arnold was employed as an auto body and an implement repairman for 40 years with Massey Ferguson.

He also enjoyed working as a school crossing guard.

He volunteered for RSVP and also at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, helping to make crafts. He enjoyed woodworking and liked puttering with anything and everything.

Arnold loved his grand dogs, Ellie and Lucas, like they were grandkids.

He was a member of the American Legion, Post 101, Mason City.

Survivors include four children, Larry Sahr and his wife, Bobbie, Coon Rapids, Minn.; Kristie Perez, Rollo, Mo.; Cheri Columbo, Mason City; and Pete Lichman and his wife, Debbie, Columbia, Mo.; six grandchildren, Angela Gaffke and her husband, Steve, Rice, Minn.; Jason Sahr and his fiancee, Britt, Coon Rapids, Minn.; Derek Perez and his wife, Missy, Follo, Mo.; Becky and Jacob Lichman, both of Columbia, Mo.; and Tomie Colombo, Garner; four great-grandchildren, Megan, Alex and Drew Gaffke, all of Rice, Minn.; and Hannah Perez, Columbia, Mo.; two brothers, Gary Sahr and his wife, Shirley, Mason City; and Paul Sahr and his wife, Jean, Bonaparte, Calif.; one sister, Jane Roberts and her husband, Mike, Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, David Lichman; one brother, Milford Sahr; and one son-in-law, Chuck Colombo Jr.

** Boyd H. Denney

GARNER — Boyd H. Denney, 77, of Garner, died Wednesday (Feb. 11, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Daniel Bloesch officiating. Burial will be at Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner.

Boyd Henry Denney, the son of James and Florence (Ferguson) Denney, was born Aug. 16, 1920, at Garner. He graduated from Garner High School in 1938 and attended college at Upper Iowa University at Fayette where he played football.

On July 22, 1942, he married Hazel Adeline Stuart at Ellis Point Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. They made their home in Lebanon, Ind., where he worked at a defense plant for several years.

In 1945 they moved to Rake where they farmed. In 1958 they moved to Garner where they owned and operated the Westside Grocery Store. In 1983 they remodeled the store and changed it to Denney's Townhouse Deli.

Hazel and Boyd continued to work at the deli together until they retired. Boyd also drove school bus for the Garner-Hayfield Community Schools for approximately 17 years.

He enjoyed his family, work, fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Garner.

He is survived by his son, Roger Denney and his wife, Sheryll, of Garner; a grandson, Brian Denney, of Garner; two stepgrandsons, Lance Gardner and his wife, Buffy, of Garner and Jason Gardner, of Garner; a sister, Elain Putz and her husband, Merlin, of Neenah, Wis.; a brother, James Denney and his wife, Wilma, of Hampton, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Kay Denney, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, April 11, 1997; parents; and a brother, Robert Denney.

** Leonard Ervin Lau

GLENVILLE, Minn. — Leonard Ervin Lau, 88, of rural Glenville, Minn., died Wednesday (Feb. 11, 1998) at the Austin Medical Center, Austin, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Bentz officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. South, Northwood and one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the Church.

Casketbearers will be his grandsons, Larry Dean Lau Jr., Barry Jay Lau, Brett Walterman Lau, Chad Leonard Lau, Dennis Gene Lau Jr. and Dodd Robert Ginn. Honorary casketbearers will be his granddaughters, Lisa Carol Klooster, Lori Lyn Poole, Denise Kay Gleason, Robyn Sue Maus, Sundi Joy Lau, and Wendy Jean Krenz.

Leonard Ervin Lau was born on Dec. 15, 1909, in Freeborn County, Minn., near Gordonsville, the son of Henry and Minnie (Luth) Lau.

He attended and received his education in the rural country schools in Freeborn County.

Leonard was a life-long resident of Freeborn County, living on their farm in Freeborn County for 58 years.

He was united in marriage to Hazel B. Turvold on April 19, 1933, in Silver Lake Township near Northwood. She preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 1987.

Leonard enjoyed his farm and presided there until his death. He enjoyed singing on tractors, horses, reminiscing about the good old days and driving his four wheeler to check on things; but his great love and enjoyment was his children and grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are three sons, one daughter, three daughters-in-law, and one son-in-law, Larry Dean Lau and his wife, Beverly, of Argyle, Texas; Laurlyn (Bub) DuWayne Lau and his wife, Carol, of rural Glenville, Minn.; and Dennis Gene Lau and his wife, Linda, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and Darlene Kay Bontrager and her husband, James, of Bloomington, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel Wolf, of Glenville, Minn.; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer Lau of London, Minn.; and Harvey Lau, of Austin, Minn.; four sisters, Alvina Peterson of Northwood, Minnie Sutton, of Nora Springs; Lillian Rasmusson, of Glenville, Minn.; and Anna Ewald, of Glenville, Minn.

** Michael D. McCarty

AUSTIN, Minn. — Michael D. McCarty, 49, of 304 SW 22nd St., died Wednesday (Feb. 11, 1998) at the Austin Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin, Minn.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Worlein Funeral Home, 1801 NW Fourth St., Austin, Minn. and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

The family prefers memorials.

He was born June 23, 1948, in Flint, Mich., to Florence (Kear) and Leon McCarty.

Michael met Sherri Miller at Fort Meyers Beach, Fla., in the summer of 1972 and he married her on Sept. 23, 1972, in Austin.

After living in Flint, Mich.; Sioux City, Iowa; Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Hawaii, he settled in Austin and worked as a general contractor. He subcontracted for Midwest Siding in Mason City, Iowa.

His hobbies included hang gliding, bridge jumping, gold mining, hiking and ocean fishing, but the love of his life were his granddaughters.

He was known for his random acts of kindness to all mankind. A member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Austin, Michael fought a good fight during his bout with cancer and never gave up.

Survivors include his wife, Sherri, of Austin, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, Mikei and Jason Johnson, of Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Dennis Jr. and Wendy McCarty, of Mt. Morris, Mich., and Shay Michael and Heather McCarty, of Holmen, Wis.; five granddaughters; mother, Florence McCarty, of Mt. Bert Frey was born on March 1, 1911, in Belmond, the son of Barney and Lydia (Bier) Frey. He was raised on a farm near Meservey.

On Feb. 24, 1938, Bert was united in marriage to Clara Johnson at the Marion Center Parsonage in Franklin County, Iowa.

They lived on a farm near Meservey for four years prior to moving to the family farm near Alexander. They farmed for 40 years and then retired to Belmond in 1983.

He had a great love for hunting and fishing. Bert was a member of the Ventura Gun Club, where he won numerous trophies and awards. Bert was very fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bert is survived by a daughter, Donna Pals and her husband, Lyle, of Belmond, Iowa; four grandchildren, Kim Funke and her husband, Bryan, of Belmond, Iowa; Sue Theobald and her husband, Dennis, of Clear Lake, Iowa; Dave Pals, of Belmond; and Dan Pals, of Carmel, Ind.; three great-grandchildren, Amy and Adam Funke, of Belmond, and Josh Theobald, of Clear Lake, Iowa.

Winifred Jane Waychus was born March 3, 1918, at Clear Lake. She was of full-blooded Irish descent, the last of nine children born to William and Nettie May (McGines) Young.

She married Hipolyte F. "Hipp" Waychus on Nov. 20, 1937, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City. They had two sons, Richard and Dennis Waychus.

Winifred was employed as a laborer in several places, the last was Schnieder Industries, Mason City. She also was a house mother for the St. Joseph Nursing School.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a very giving woman, who blessed many lives with her love.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Waychus of Mason City, and Dennis Waychus and his wife, Kathy, of Coulter; five grandchildren, Denise Harrison of Aurora, Ill., Debra Heckman of Carroll, Billie Marie Waychus of Clear Lake, Monty Miller of Coulter, and Nathan Miller of Hampton; one brother, John Young and his wife, Phyllis, of California; and one sister, Mattie Anderson of Charles City.

Mary Knapp was born March 15, 1903, on a farm near Hampton, the daughter of Peter and May (Elphic) Emhoff. She attended country school Marion #8 near Hampton. Later, her family moved to a farm east of Sheffield. She was married to Raymond E. Knapp. They made their home on a farm near Sheffield, but later moved into town, where Ray worked for Sheffield Brick and Tile.

Mary enjoyed her flower garden, and fishing and her friendly neighbors, whom she would share her tasty baking with. She also spent many hours with her three grandchildren, whom she dearly loved along with her four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She also spent many peaceful hours in her shady backyard.

She was a member of the Zion Methodist Church in Sheffield, and in her younger years she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior.

Mary is survived by one daughter, Etta Mae Heuberger and her husband, Charles, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Michael Heuberger and his wife, Marietta, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Diana O'Keeffe and her husband, Paul, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Charles Heuberger and his wife, Carol, of Nisswa, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Heuberger of Minneapolis, Minn., Melissa Loe and her husband, David, of Henly Falls, Minn., Mark Heuberger and his wife, Erin, of Minneapolis, and Amy Heuberger of Nisswa; and one great-great-granddaughter, Ashley Loe of Henly Falls.

MASON CITY — Donald Curtis Stanton, 78, of 1205 Second St. N.W., died Wednesday (Feb. 11, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Donald Curtis Stanton was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Sibley, the son of Leonard and Anna (Hickman) Stanton. He married Ruth I. McQuirk on April 20, 1940, in Spirit Lake. Following their marriage they moved to Clear Lake where they raised and educated their three children. Don served in World War II and retired from Allied Mills in Mason City, where he was plant manager. He and his wife, Ruth, then moved to Mason City for their retirement years.

Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge, and was a Disabled American Veteran. Don's special interest included traveling, fishing and driving speedboats, camping, and spending time with his family and friends.

He leaves behind daughters, Toni A. Leonard and her husband, David, and Shelley D. Moore and her husband, Steven, and son, Mark C. Stanton and his wife, Deadra, all of Mason City. Also, with great pride, his grandchildren, Jon Schisel of Garner, Shannon Janssen and her husband, Michael, Nathan Stanton, Christine Leonard and Lori Leonard, all of Mason City, and Sarah Stanton and Zachary Moore, both of Iowa City.

He is also survived by his sister, Milly Roos of Sibley; sisters-in-law, Beth Jensen of Clear Lake, and Anna Mae Stanton of Sibley, and their families, along with a special friend, Catherine Renaud of Mason City.

On October 2, 1937, Merle was united in marriage to Charles H. Otto in Albert Lea, Minn.

Merle enjoyed going to auctions and collecting salt and pepper shakers. She also loved to go shopping and watch people, but most of all playing bingo on Wednesdays at Good Shepherd. When Merle was not doing embroidery work she could be found whipping up a great meal or baking.

Debbie Kloster was a special granddaughter who took good care of Merle both at home and at Good Shepherd.

Mrs. Otto is survived by six daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Peter (Gladys) Smidt, Betty Anderson and Nancy Holm, all of Mason City, Mr. and Mrs. Paul (Janice) Fisher of Waterloo, Joyce Constine of Greene, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth (Frances) Pannhoff of Kanawha; three sisters, Lucille Reindl of Mason City, Ruby Halverson of Washington, Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Yvonne) Casey of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great- great grandchildren.

** Richard James Latham

CLEAR LAKE — Richard James Latham, 75, of 812 Seventh Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City. Inurnment will be in Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery and family services will be held at a later date.

His body was cremated. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard was born in Mt. Vernon Township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, on May 23, 1922, the son of Francis H. and Edna M. (Buffington) Latham. He attended rural schools and Mason City schools.

Richard, in 1940, enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, 133rd Infantry Regiment, a Mason City unit of the 34th Infantry Division., and served with that unit in World War II in the British Isles, North Africa and Italy. He was discharged in 1945, he enlisted in the Regular Army in 1946 and served with the Military Police in the U.S., Europe and the Far East until 1962, when he retired with 21 years of service.

In 1963, Richard began employment with the Clear Lake Police Department during which time he was also employed part-time by the Ruan Transport in the Mason City terminal. In 1973, he was employed full time by Ruan Transport until his retiring in 1986.

Richard was a member of the Clear Lake V.F.W., I.O.O.F. Lodge in Clear Lake and the Teamsters Union.

Richard is survived by six sisters, Frances Rutledge and her husband, Lewis, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Helen A. Latham, Wheaton, Ill.; Rosemary DeWitt and her husband, Kenneth, Hanlontown, Iowa; Vernonica Enabnit and her husband, Paul, Mesa, Ariz.; Beverly Swan, St. Louis Park, Minn.; Lucy Peevy and her husband, James, Tulsa, Okla.; one brother, John D. Latham, Blakesburg, Iowa; a special friend, Georgia Hackleman; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Betty Bowers in 1950.

Irene Lovetta Myers was born Sept. 5, 1915 in Brighton, Ill., a daughter of Walter Roscoe and Myrtle Lola (Warr) Myers, and died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

She received her education in the Brighton Public Schools graduating in 1933. She attended and graduated from Monticello College in Godfrey, Ill. She later received her BA from Bradley University at Peoria.

Her first teaching position was at Medora, Ill., where she taught high school English and French. That’s where she met William Azbell who was also a teacher there. They were united in marriage on June 26, 1939, at Troy, Mo.

For the next several years, Irene took a break from her profession when her children were born. During this time, they lived in Kankakee, Ill., Muncie and Green Castle, Ind. before moving to Waverly in 1952 where Bill was a physics professor at Wartburg College.

After teaching a year at the Lutheran Children’s Home, Irene taught fifth grade at Washington Irving School in Waverly for 25 years and then substituted for nine years in the junior and senior high. She also taught Bible school and Junior High Sunday school for many years at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly.

She had been past president of the Waverly Chapter of The American Association of University Women, past Worthy Matron of Waverly Chapter No. 353, Order of the Eastern Star, founding organizer and past president of the Waverly PTA, member of the Waverly Garden Club, Waverly Senior Citizens, and current Director for the Bremer County Historical Society, Life member of the Iowa State Education Association, Lifetime Auxiliary member of the Waverly Municipal Hospital.

Irene’s interests included making ceramics at the Mitchell Manor and giving the pieces away to her family and friends. She was an avid sports fan and most of all enjoyed visiting with her friends and going out for dinner.

Living family members include her husband, William, of Waverly; her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Jack Reid, of Greene; son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Teresa Azbell, of Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandchildren, Kelly James and Shirley Thompson, of Waterloo; Heidi Lynn and Matthew Buddenberg, of Cataslia; Kathryn Anne Reid, of Greene; one great-granddaughter, Alanna Nichole Thompson, of Waterloo; three stepgrandchildren, Paul Fields, Robert Fields, and Jennifer Fields, all of Middletown, Ohio; and five stepgreat-grandchildren, Laryn, Sydney, Payne, Addisyn, and Kinzer Fields. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

CHARLES CITY — Janice "Jan" M. Putney, 56, of 2022 Greenfield Lane, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) in Toledo, Ohio.

Janice Martha Randle Putney was born April 15, 1941 at Enid, Okla.

CHARLES CITY — Howard C. Thoman, 76, of 907 Hildreth St., Charles City, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at the Ninth St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, with the Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with a 3:30 p.m. Rosary by St. Mary’s Circle and a parish Vigil Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday morning one hour prior to services at the church.

Howard Charles Thoman was born June 18, 1921 at Calmar.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Charles City; two sons, Larry Thoman, Sioux City, and Michael Thoman, Dewey, Ariz.; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, and one stepsister.

CLEAR LAKE — Mrs. Florence H. Dodd, 85, of 200 15th Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Donald Simmonds, Chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Mamre Cemetery, Stanton, Iowa, with the Rev. Dannett John of Taber Lutheran Church, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Monday.

The family suggests memoriaols to the Florence H. Dodd Memorial Fund.

Florence was born Feb. 19, 1912 in Stanton, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Wilma (Hult) Burke. She attended school in Stanton and then continued her education on the community college.

Florence married Kenneth Veele who was a bank examiner, so they lived in many areas of the United States due to his occupation.

Florence married George Dodd on March 4, 1972 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, Iowa. They farmed northeast of Clear Lake, Iowa, until their retirement in 1983. After retirement, they moved into Hanlontown. They enjoyed spending the winters in Mission, Texas. In the fall of 1997, they made their residence in Clear Lake.

Florence enjoyed traveling, bird watching, camping. She was a member of a bird club in Cedar Falls, Iowa and the Good Sam Club.

Florence is survived by her husband, George Dodd, Clear Lake, Iowa; two stepchildren, Byron Dodd and his wife, Bonnie, Plymouth, Iowa and Darlene Butner and her husband, Robert Jr., Clear Lake, Iowa; one sister, Fern Cling, Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Kenneth Veele; two brothers, Ervin and Elmer Burke; and one sister, Mable Burke Gabrielson.

** Phyllis Watros

CLEAR LAKE — Phyllis Watros, 75, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Feb. 11, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. She had been a resident of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake for the past 13 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Cresco, with the Rev. Michael Tauke, officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, Cresco, with a 4 p.m. rosary, a 6 p.m. parish scripture service, and a 7 p.m. V.F.W. Auxiliary Memorial service. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.

She was born Sept. 23, 1922, at Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew "Pete" and Mary (Mayme) Herold. She attended Notre Dame High School.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Gordon Watros on Nov. 13, 1954 by Father Roman Schares of St. Joseph’s Parish. Phyllis was well known as a vocalist at social events and weddings in the Cresco area.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon Watros, of Clear Lake; five daughters, Mary (Steven) Mrdjenovich, of Maple Grove, Minn.; Susann (Ken) Carr, of Mason City; Cynthia (James) Peterson, of Rudd; Janenne (Tim) O’Donnell, of Mason City; and Jennifer Moorman, of Rudd; and one son, Lon Watros, of Cresco; 16 grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Gerald, Vern and Dorrence Herold.

DENVER, Colo. — Richard Dietz, 52, of Denver, Colo. passed away Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at his home in Denver.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling of the Bethany Lutheran Church, officiating.

Mittelstadt Funeral Home, in Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Allan Dietz, son of Harry "Jack" and Mae (Hanson) Dietz, was born Oct. 19, 1945, in Britt, Iowa. He graduated from the Thompson High School in 1964, and attended N.I.A.C.C. in Mason City.

Richard was a veteran and served in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his mother, Mae Dietz, of Thompson; two sisters, Harriet and her husband, Bill Young, of Lake Mills; and Bonnie and her husband, Jerry Bakken, of Northwood; three nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, and grandparents.

** Norman Harold Rye

HANLONTOWN — Norman Harold Rye, 84, of rural Hanlontown, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at the Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown, with the Rev. Linda Johnson, officiating. Burial will be in the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.

Friends may call from 3 until 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

Norman Harold Rye was born on Aug. 5, 1913, in Worth County, near Hanlontown, the son of Thomas O. and Christena (Trustem) Rye. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Hanlontown Lutheran Church, which is now Grace Lutheran Church.

He attended and received his education in the Hanlontown Consolidated School System graduating from Hanlontown High School in 1931. After completing his schooling, he began farming on the family farm near Hanlontown which is a "Century farm."

Norman loved to farm and was an avid reader. Norman was a kind man and lead a good life. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown.

Survivors include one brother, T. Claire Rye and his wife, Viola, of Hanlontown; one sister, June Ilg, of Woodruff, Wis.; 10 nieces and nephews, Dick Anderson, of Milan, Minn., Laurie Ennen, of Garden Grove, Calif., Paul Brunsvold, of Hanlontown, Clayton Rye, of Hanlontown, Mary Johnson, of Tuttle, Okla., Carol Rye, of Mason City, Julie Dostal, of Bloomington, Ill., Christie Salter, of Durango, Colo., Lenore Schmidt, of Rochester, N.Y., and Catherine Ilg, of Topengo Cannon, Calif.; and a good friend, Robert Niemi, of Hanlontown; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Cora Rye, Laura Anderson, and Ethel Brunsvold; and two brothers, Robert and Orville Rye.

** Leo John ‘Jack’ Skyles Jr.

TEMPLE, Texas — Leo John "Jack" Skyles Jr., 72, of Temple, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at a local hospital.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Lukes Catholic Church, Temple, Texas. Jack will be laid to rest in Mason City, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Lukes Building Fund or to St. Vincent De Paul.

Jack was born in Mason City, Iowa on July 17, 1925.

He married Geneva Allos on Jan. 28, 1947 in Mason City, Iowa.

They have resided in Temple, Texas for 20 years.

He was a graduate of the University of Iowa. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was employed with Jewel/Osco Drugs for 38 years.

He was an active member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in many capacities including Eucharistic Minister.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7197.

He was president of St. Vincent De Paul Society for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Geneva Skyles, Temple, Texas; three daughters, Jennifer Skyles, of California; Linda Pileggi, of Illinois; and Jacquie Owens, of Michigan; one son, Jeffrey Skyles, of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Clarice Skyles; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Harold Gallagher; sister, Sister Annette Skyles; and sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Ralph Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Cameron, Angelo, Zachary, McKenzie, Mario, Dominic, and Lauren; and many nieces and nephews.

CLEAR LAKE — Mrs. Mae J. Nichols, 90, died Friday (Feb. 13, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, rural Burchinal.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and will continue from 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Mae was born March 30, 1907, in Crocker, Mo., the daughter of Charles and Rozella (Rucker) Odom. She moved with her parents at the age of 9 to the Swaledale area, where she obtained her education.

Mae married John C. Nichols Sr. on Nov. 24, 1927, in Swaledale. They farmed in the Cerro Gordo County area. She cooked at the All Vets Social Center and other Clear Lake restaurants.

Mae enjoyed cooking, gardening and crocheting. Her biggest prides and joys were her grandchildren and family. Mae was a big supporter of Opportunity Village. She was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Mae is survived by two sons, John Nichols Jr. and his wife, Edith, and Don Nichols and his wife, Dorothy, all of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, Michael, Kathryn, Deborah, Linda, Sandra, Kenneth and Amie; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Flo Bonner of Clear Lake; and two sisters-in-law, Peggy Odom of Mason City and Marjorie Caffrey of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Dorothy; husband, John Nichols Sr.; brother, Clifford Odom; and one sister, Beulah Pannhoff.

** Irene Gazes

MASON CITY — Irene Gazes, 87, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Nevada, Reno.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, 1311 Second St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, with a Trisagion service beginning at 7 p.m.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Gazes was born July 10, 1910, in Athens, Greece, the daughter of Demitrios and Kallopie Kantaris. She came to the United States from Greece in 1914, at the age of 4. She married Louis Sam Gazes on April 2, 1929, in Albert Lea, Minn. Irene was a homemaker and owned and operated a restaurant in Oakland, Calif., for a few years. She was a member of the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, Mason City, where she donated much of her time preparing authentic Greek cuisine.

Survivors include one son, Sam Louis Gazes of San Leandro, Calif.; four sisters, Christina Klein and Stella Markos, both of Mason City, Mary Traintasillou of Detroit, Mich., and Betty Armoskos of Alameda, Calif.; one brother, Gus Kantaris of Mason City; six grandchildren, Marie Eynon and Irene Eynon, both of Detroit, Mich., George Rezabek of Texas, Eleni Lou Gazes and Costadena Irene Gazes of California and Louis Sam Gazes, her husband’s namesake, of Reno, Nev.; three great-grandchildren, Amber Irene Gazes of California and Sam Louis Gazes and Rachel Renee Gazes of Reno, Nev.; and many other family members and friends.

NORTHWOOD — Philip R. Miller, 86, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Northwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home.

Philip was born on July 8, 1911, near Freeborn, Minn., the son of Sidney and Lura (Seath) Miller. He attended and graduated from the Freeborn High School. He married Pauline Enderson on June 19, 1932, at the Congregational Church at Freeborn. To this union two sons were born, Robert in 1933 and Jerald in 1937.

Philip was employed by the American Gas Machine Company in Albert Lea, Minn., for several years before the couple moved to Forest City, where he was in partnership in the Forest City Greenhouse. In 1955, he purchased the Northwood Greenhouse, where he was in business for 18 years before selling to Dean Ausenhus. Philip then worked with Methus Realty for several years until retirement. He served for 20 years as treasurer of the Viking Manor Association as well as with the Northwood Improvement Association. Phil was an active member of the Northwood United Methodist Church, serving on several boards. He was known for his friendliness to all in Northwood and his cheerful smile will be missed by his children and grandchildren and by all who knew him and loved him.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lucile Dillavou, of Freeborn.

CLEAR LAKE — Edna Krull Fishel, 67, formerly of Wellsburg, died Friday (Feb. 13, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, rural Wellsburg, with the Rev. Ron Fisher and the Rev. Bernard Olsen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Edna Krull Fishel was born March 27, 1930, in Grundy County.

** Alvin ‘Al’ W. Martin

MASON CITY — Alvin "Al" W. Martin, 55, of 1326 E. State St., died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson and the Rev. Rodney Holmburg officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Alvin "Al" W. Martin was born Feb. 27, 1942, in Mason City, the son of Alvin R. and Margaret (Johnson) Martin. Al attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1961. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1961 until 1981, retiring as a gunnery sergeant. Al married Judy Wooten on Aug. 22, 1965, at the Wintergreen Free Will Baptist Church in Cove City, N.C. Al returned to Mason City in July 1981, and managed the Holiday Gas Station and Burger King, and then Servicemaster from 1987-1992. In 1992, he started to work for St. James Lutheran Church as a building supervisor.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Martin, of Mason City; children, Doug Martin and his wife, Shelia, of Mason City, Angela D. Martin of Mason City, and Alvin W. Martin Jr. and his wife, Hillary, of Ft. Wayneright, Alaska; eight grandchildren, Randy, Ashley, Heather, Lee, Zachary, Samantha, Danielle and Amanda; three sisters, Judy Frost and her husband, Garry, of Waterloo, Gloria Calos of Lompoc, Calif., and his twin sister, Alviena Burns and her husband, Ron, of Norway; one brother, Dwight K.
