** Jack Tieman

TITONKA — Jack Tieman, 90, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Good Hope Lutheran Church, Titonka, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka.

Jack Tieman was born June 16, 1907, in Buckley, Ill.

Survivors include his wife, Edith, of Titonka; one son, Terry Tieman of Burt; one daughter, Teresa Tieman of Fairmont, Minn.; and one sister, Gertrude Tietz of Albert Lea, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

** Margaret Weigle

RICEVILLE — Margaret Weigle, 77, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 1998) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited by St. Anne's Rosary Society and the Knights of Columbus at 4 p.m., and a scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Margaret Weigle was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Riceville.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin, of Riceville; one son, Robert, of Smyrna, Ga.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Mark Sloan of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

** Mae J. Nichols

CLEAR LAKE — Mrs. Mae J. Nichols, 90, died Friday (Feb. 13, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Interment will be in the Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, rural Burchinal, with the Rev. Dick Scott officiating.

Visitation will continue after 11 a.m. today at the funeral home until time of service.

The family suggests memorials to the Mae J. Nichols memorial fund.

Mae was born March 30, 1907, in Crocker, Mo., the daughter of Charles and Rozella (Rucker) Odom. She moved with her parents at the age of nine to the Swaledale area, where she obtained her education.

Mae married John C. Nichols Sr. on Nov. 24, 1927, in Swaledale. They farmed in the Cerro Gordo County area. She cooked at the All Vets Social Center and other Clear Lake restaurants.

Mae enjoyed cooking, gardening and crocheting. Her most pride and joy were her grandchildren and family. Mae was a big supporter of Opportunity Village. She was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Mae is survived by two sons, John Nichols Jr. and his wife, Edith, and Don Nichols and his wife, Dorothy, both of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, Michael, Kathryn, Deborah, Linda, Sandra, Kenneth, and Arnie; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Flo Bonner of Clear Lake; and two sisters-in-law, Peggy Odom of Mason City, and Marjorie Caffrey of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Dorothy; husband, John Nichols Sr.; brother, Clifford Odom; and one sister, Beulah Pannhoff.

** William Lewis Rode

TITONKA — William Lewis Rode, 83, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Virtus Stoffregan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Scaaf Funeral Home, and will continue after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

William Lewis Rode was born March 8, 1914, in Titonka.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Lee of Titonka; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, and one brother and two sisters in infancy.

** John Folkus Johnson

BELMOND — John Folkus Johnson, 89, passed away Saturday (Feb. 14, 1998) at the Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed Church, Alexander, with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Interment will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

John, the son of Cornelius C. And Johana E. Sporaa Johnson, was born Nov. 5, 1908, on the family farm near Alexander. He attended Alexander schools. John farmed with his father until his father retired. He did custom work for area farmers. He then moved to Belmond in 1965, where he worked for Kinseth Plumbing and Heating, retiring in 1978. John lived in the Belmond Apartments for 16 years, entering the Belmond Health Care Center in 1994. He loved to play "Aggravation" and work on radios.

John is survived by three sisters, Jennie Isaacson of Clarion, Irene Markham of Ogden, and Vernadine Kramer and her husband, Louis, of Dassel, Minn.; two brothers, Roman Johnson and his wife, Wilma, of Alexander, and Merlin Johnson and his wife, Donna, of Meservey; one sister-in-law, Minnie Johnson of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil; and one brother in infancy.

** Inez Chezik

OSAGE — Inez Chezik, 92, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Faith Lutheran Home.

** Raymond Merlin Olson

THOMPSON — Raymond Merlin Olson, 67, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 1998) at Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, Minn., with the Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

Raymond Merlin Olson was born May 9, 1930, in Eden Township, Winnebago County.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Olson, of Thompson; his children, Randolph Olson of Hastings, Minn., Dwight Olson of Thompson, Cynthia Olsen of Leland, Timothy Olson of Thompson, and Colette Reimann of Leland; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carlyle Olson of Thompson, and David Olson of Owatonna, Minn.; and three sisters, Ruth Forrey of Mankato, Minn., Carolyn Ullestad of Story City, and Ramona Hasche of Doon.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Ester Rae Mattison

NORA SPRINGS — Ester Rae Mattison, 89, of 115 S. Hawkeye St., died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Inurnment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie, Minn., at a later time.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, is in charge of arrangements.

Ester Rae Mattison was born Aug. 29, 1908, in Huron, S.D., the daughter of Earl and Sarah (Baum) Woods. She married Argo Mattison on Dec. 15, 1934, at the YWCA Chapel, Minneapolis, Minn.

Ester enjoyed gardening and volunteer work. She visited folks at the Nora Springs Care Center and Good Shepherd. She was an active member of Nora Springs United Methodist Church for 25 years.

Survivors include her son, Jim Mattison and his wife, Susanne, St. Louis Park, Minn.; two grandchildren, Andy and Dan Mattison, both of St. Louis Park; one brother, Fred Woods and his wife, Betty, of Willmar, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in October, 1995; and an infant daughter.

** Alice Evelyn Riehm

BRITT — Alice Evelyn Riehm, 92, died Friday (Feb. 13, 1998) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Alice Evelyn Riehm, the daughter of Andrew and Augusta Carlson Johnson, was born July 30, 1905, at Pilot Mound. She moved with her parents to the Kanawha area, where she received her education in the rural schools. She was united in marriage with Paul Riehm on Aug. 22, 1935, in Bethany, Mo. The couple have since made their home in the Britt area.

Mrs. Riehm was a member of the King's Daughter, Eastern Star, and a 50-year member of the United Methodist Church Women of Britt.

She is survived by her children, Patricia Riehm of Britt, Marvel Bartley and her husband, Wayne, of Villa Park, Calif., Charlene Trotman and her husband, Frank, of Peoria, Ill., and Robert Riehm of Medford, Ore.; four grandchildren, Matthew Bartley, Lisa Bartley, Lesley Trotman and Laura Gray; and one great-grandchild, Briana Gray; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Eisenman of Britt, and Bessie Riehm of Garner; and a brother-in-law, Curtis Riehm and his wife, Florine, of Garner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, who passed away Feb. 7, 1985; two brothers; and two sisters.

** Helen Perkins Thompson

MASON CITY — Helen Perkins Thompson, 97, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. S.E.

** Francis A. Heimerman

STACYVILLE — Francis A. Heimerman, 80, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Stacyville Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Visitation Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. today at the church, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Francis was born Oct. 5, 1917, at Stacyville, the son of Mike and Anna (Rauen) Heimerman. He attended Visitation School in Stacyville. He served four years in the Air Force during World War II. Francis married Marcene Warrington on June 10, 1947. He was a farmer in the McIntire area for 35 years, retiring to Stacyville in 1974. He was a member of the Visitation Catholic Church, the Stacyville American Legion Post 569, the Knights of Columbus, and he was a past board member of the Stacyville Nursing Home.

Survivors include his wife, Marcene Heimerman of Stacyville; four daughters, Sandy Offen and her husband, Villo, of McIntire, Sharon Theobald of Stewartville, Minn., Ann Heimerman and a special friend, Scott Potenza, of Chicago, Ill., and Mary Anderson and her husband, David, of Savage, Minn.; one son, Gene Heimerman and his wife, Sue, of Perry; three sisters, Stella Smith and her husband, Leo, of Stacyville, Rose Mullenbach of Osage, and Dorothy Larson and her husband, Loris, of Austin, Minn.; four brothers, Paul Heimerman of St. Cloud, Minn., Joe Heimerman of Evans, Colo., John "Ernie" Heimerman and his wife, Teresa, of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Gilbert Heimerman and his wife, Shirley, of Austin; nine grandchildren, Lynnette Offen, Michelle Richardson and her husband, Randy, Keith Theobald, James Theobald, Deanne Offen, Jessica Heimerman, Daniel Offen, Eric Heimerman, and Janelle Offen; three step-grandchildren, Davis, Julia and Steven Anderson; and two great-grandchildren, Kirsten and Ryan Richardson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Cecelia Gilgenbach; and three brothers, Gregor, Sylvester, and Michael Heimerman.

MASON CITY — Velma Hammond, 91, of Mason City died Sunday (Feb. 15, l998) at Good Shepherd Care Center.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. Bob Beard, of Sheffield, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Velma Hammond was born Sept. 22, l906, in Crocker, Mo.

She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Johnson, Mason City, and Dorothy Thompson, Rockwell; and one brother, Wayne Rucker, Van Nays, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a sister and two brothers.

** Raymond W. Catlin

MASON CITY — Raymond W. Catlin, 82, of 419 First St. N.E., Mason City died Monday (February 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

OSAGE — Inez Chezik, 92, of Osage, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Faith Lutheran Home, in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Hill, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home.

Inez Chezik was born Feb. 21, 1905, near LaPorte City.

She is survived by one daughter, Darlene Kinzer, of Spokane, Wash.; one son, Duane Chezik, Osage; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Wagner, Dysart; and two brothers, Willard Hook, Dysart and Marvin Hook, Manhattan, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, and one brother.

** Avis L. Endreland

THOMPSON — Avis L. Endreland, 82, of Thompson, died Monday (Feb. 16, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Thompson.

** Hannetta Modderman

ALEXANDER — Hannetta Modderman, 95, of Alexander, died Monday (Feb. 16, 1998) at the Willow Creek Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church, Alexander, with the Rev. Gerald Norman, officiating. Interment will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond.

Hannetta Modderman, the daughter of Henry and Grace (Pals) Schulte Sr., was born Oct. 17, 1902, in Franklin County, Iowa.

She was married to Claas Modderman on April 9, 1924. They lived and farmed in the Alexander area until retiring in 1962.

Hannetta was a member of the First Reformed Church in Alexander, and was one of the first members baptized in 1903. She was the grandest of grandmothers, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.

She is survived by her son, Roger Modderman and his wife, Sharon, of Mason City, Iowa; four grandchildren, Mark Modderman and his wife, Linda, of Waterloo, Iowa; Kelle Kelley and her husband, Tim, of Belmond, Iowa; Jeanne Allen, of Latimer, Iowa; Jon Modderman and his wife, Kelly, of Klemme, Iowa; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Claas; two brothers, and two sisters.

** Amanda R. Graff

MASON CITY — Amanda Rachel "Mandi" Graff, 20, of 311 Seventh St. N.W. Mason City, died Monday (Feb. 16, 1998) in a motor vehicle accident, near Faribault, Minn.

** Leroy T. Lorentzen

MASON CITY — Leroy T. Lorentzen, 79, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Randy Nielsen, Chaplain of Good Shepherd Health Center, officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, and until time of services on Wednesday.

Memorials may be given to the Leroy T. Lorentzen Memorial Fund.

Leroy was born Oct. 13, 1918 in Rochester, Minn., the son of Lars and Bertha (Hustel) Lorentzen. Leroy was confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs and was also a one-time member there.

He graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1936.

He married Flossie G. Birch on May 16, 1942, at Waterloo. The Lorentzens were residents of Nora Springs for many years before moving to Mason City in 1964. Leroy was a long-time employee of Jacob E. Decker & Sons, retiring in 1975.

Leroy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a volunteer for Good Shepherd Health Center for 18 years.

He loved to hunt, fish, garden and enjoyed spending time with his family.

His survivors include his wife, Flossie G. Lorentzen, of Mason City; three sons, William Lorentzen and his wife, Karen, of Rockford, Ill., Robert Lorentzen and his wife, Carol, of Mason City, and Gerald Lorentzen and his wife, Nancy, of Rockwell; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Sidney Lorentzen and his wife, Mary, of Decorah; special friend and sister-in-law, Annette Haddy, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leslie and Lloyd; one sister in infancy; and one grandson in infancy.

** Mary A. Schumacher

BANCROFT — Mary A. Schumacher, 93, of 546 E. Ramsey, Bancroft, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Heritage Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Eugene Schumacher, officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Gary-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with a 3 p.m. Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.

Mary A. Schumacher was born March 11, 1904, in Seneca.

Survivors include one son, Eugene Schumacher, Rock Rapids; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Engesser; and one sister, Florence McGuire, both of Bancroft.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, and two brothers.

MASON CITY — Helen P. Thompson, 97, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center.

** Marion Faye Swenson

BELMOND — Marion Faye Swenson, 72, of Belmond, died Monday (Feb. 16, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, with Pastor Jim Carpenter, officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the Church.

Marion Faye Swenson, the daughter of Charles Edward and Orah Alvern (Tomlinson) Obrecht was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Belmond, Iowa.

She attended the Belmond Schools and was united in marriage to Vernon Swenson on June 2, 1942, at the Lutheran Church Parsonage. They made their home in Belmond all of their life.

Marion was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Hospital Auxiliary, Kensington Club, Birthday Club, and Trinity Ladies WELCA.

Marion entered the Belmond Health Care Center in January of 1997 and died there on Monday, Feb. 16, 1998.

She is survived by her sons, Larry A. Swenson and his wife, Jo Ellen, of Belmond, Iowa; and Paul V. Swenson and his wife, Roxann, of Polk City, Iowa; daughters, Sharon Hall and her husband, Sherman, of Loves Park, Ill.; and Shirley Stoffer and her husband, Douglas, of Belmond, Iowa; grandchildren, Sherman Hall Jr. and his wife, Amy; Brian Hall; Cheri Hewitt and her husband, Brian; Clay Stoffer and his wife, Jennifer; Jennifer Peterson and her husband, Max; Angela Swenson; Heather Swenson; Daniel Swenson; Jessica Swenson; great-grandchildren, Jake Hall and Kaitlyn Peterson; sister-in-law, Evelyn Obrecht; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Marilyn Swenson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Swenson; sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and Lawrence McDaniel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; sisters, Iris, June and Gladys; brothers, Robert, Edward, Harold, Merle, and Dale.

** Irene Katcher

GREENE — Irene Katcher, of 2725 March Ave., Greene, died Friday (Feb. 13, 1998) at home in rural Greene.

** Alyce Frances Conger

RICEVILLE — Alyce Frances Conger, 95, of Riceville, died Monday (Feb. 16, 1998) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Thomas Mowbray officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Alyce was born Dec. 7, 1902, at Cedar Falls.

Survivors include two daughters, Pauline Conger Moore, of Tucson, Ariz., and Sharon Conger Walker, of Burnsville, Minn.; two sons, Richard of Downington, Pa., and Douglas of Mesa, Ariz.; 26 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter, one brother, and one sister.

The family wishes that memorial contributions be given to the American Cancer Society.

** Edward Bernemann

OTTUMWA — Edward W. Bernemann, 81, of 1308 N. Van Buren Ave. died at 8:23 a.m. Monday (Feb. 16, l998) at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Worship Center with the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. today at the Reece Funeral Home, with a Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m., followed by family visitation until 8:30 p.m. The Honor Guard of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will be present at the Christian wake and the funeral Mass.

Edward W. Bernemann was born Nov. 19, 1916, in Mason City, Iowa, to Bernard W. and Katherine Hying Bernemann.

A graduate of St. Joseph High School in Mason City, he served in the U.S. Army with the 74th General Hospital unit during World War II, having served three years in England and France.

He married Shirley Gerard on Aug. 7, l948.

He was a grocer for 43 years; he was employed by Witwer Grocery Co. in Mason City, and Fareway in Ottumwa, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, an honorary life member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #888, and a member of General McMullen Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Judy Barr and Jeanne Bernemann of Ottumwa; fours sons, Thomas Bernemann, of Council Bluffs, Steve Bernemann, of Grinnell, Kevin Bernemann, of Ottumwa, and Timothy Bernemann, of West Branch; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Clark, of Mason City, Florence Berger, of Forest City, and Genevieve Walters, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William, Leo, and Frances Berneman; and a sister, Agnes Bernemann.

** Raymond W. Catlin

MASON CITY — Raymond W. Catlin, 82, of 419 First Street N.E., Mason City, died Monday afternoon (Feb. 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Offering honored memories will be Carolyn Bang and Raymond Catlin Jr. Inurnment will be at the North Ridge Cemetery in Cambria, N.Y.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home until time of services at the funeral home.

Ray was born on March 29, 1915, at Olean, N.Y., the son of Herman and Mary (McAuliff) Catlin. He attended school in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and while he was growing up he worked on the family farm. He served in the United States Army during WWII.

He worked for eight years with the state of New York as a heavy equipment operator for the state road division. He continued his education in chemical manufacturing and worked for Durez Plastics, a division of Occidental Chemical Company, making formaldehyde for 38 years at the North Tonawanda, New York, plant, where he retired.

Ray was a "Jack of all trades" and enjoyed taking nature walks, hunting deer, rabbits, pheasants and fishing. He moved to Mason City in early 1990.

Ray was married to Mary McMurtry who proceeded him in death. In 1941 he married Verna Greiser, who proceeded him in death in 1976. In 1983 he was married to Bessie Wright who also proceeded him in death in 1988.

Raymond is survived by one son, Raymond W. and his wife, Alice Faye Catlin Jr., Sanborn, N.Y.; two daughters, Lois and her husband, Donald Gray, Morro Bay, Calif.; Sandra and her husband, Rudy Waters, Whitley, Ky.; four granddaughters, Lori Overbeck, Katrina Carter, Cassie and Amanda Jean Waters; one grandson, Robert Trumble; three great-grandchildren, Tonja and Tammy Trumble, and Malissa Shores; his special friend, Lila Bang, Mason City; her daughters, Carolyn Bang, Mason City; Lisa and her husband, Terry Klein, Mason City; and their children, Brooke Bolding, Kayli Bang, and Alex Klein.

Ray was proceeded in death by his parents; his three wives; one daughter, Nancy Cross; three sisters, one in infancy, Leona, and Jen; and two brothers, Gerald and George Rennicks.

Amanda Rachel Graff was born April 15, 1977, in Mason City, the daughter of Ronald and Mary (Austin) Graff. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1995. She worked at Wal-Mart and recently worked at Comprehensive Systems Mason City Group Home.

She enjoyed volunteering and was involved in a full time Bible education work. Mandi had a love for animals. She enjoyed traveling and being around people.

Survivors include her parents, Ron and Mary Graff, Mason City; four sisters, Laura Torres and her husband, Mario, Danbury, Conn., Rhonda Schulz and her husband, Terry, New Hampton, Angie Zavala, Mason City, and Melissa Thiese and her husband, Michael, Mason City; seven nieces and nephews, Raquel and Leah Torres, both of Danbury, Conn., Matthew, Kevin and Jonathan Schulz, all of New Hampton, Abigail Zavala, Mason City, and Mariah Thiese, Mason City; one uncle, M.E. MASON CITY — Helen P. Thompson, 97, of 4 Third St. N.W., Apt. 647, died Sunday (Feb. 15, l998) at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Her body was donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine, Iowa City.

Helen Perkins Thompson was born June 9, 1900, in MacArthur, Ohio, the daughter of George E. And Mabel Rose (Tedrow) Perkins.

When she was two years old her parents moved to Dickens, Iowa, where her father's sister and her family lived. Her father ran the local newspaper.

In 1907, the family moved to Clear Lake where her father worked for J.C. Davenport of the Clear Lake Reporter.

In April of 1934, Helen Married Earl E. Thompson of Burlington. The couple lived in Mason City and Clear Lake until 1944, when they moved to Burlington. There Earl was the manager of the W.M. Black Co. until his retirement.

Helen was a member and Past Matron of E. C. Blackmar Chapter A.E.I., Burlington, Iowa.

After her husband's death in 1974, she sold her home and moved to Clear Lake.

In 1990, she sold her home in Clear Lake and moved to Mason City.

She is survived by two brothers, Rawlins Perkins, Buena Park, Calif., and John Perkins, Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one brother, Dowd.

** Vicki Sue Montgomery

INDIANOLA — Funeral services for Vicki Sue Montgomery, 41, of Indianola, Iowa, will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998 at the First United Methodist Church, in Indianola, with the Rev. Paul Akin and the Rev. Dwayne Madsen officiating.

Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. today at the Overton Funeral Home, Indianola, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. The family will receive memorials in her name.

Vicki was born July 13, 1956, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Donna Worley. She died on Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1974, NIACC in 1975 and the University of Northern Iowa in 1977.

She began working for the Norwalk School System in 1978 as a physical education instructor and also taught science, health and coached.

On Nov. 18, 1978, Vicki was united in marriage to Scott Douglas Montgomery. To this union, two children, Ryan Scott and Shannon Sue Montgomery, were born.

In 1983, the family moved to Indianola. She was working on her Masters at Drake University at the time of her death. She was a long time member and Membership Chair of the "Iowa Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance." She was a member of the national group, "American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance." She was a life-time member of the ISEA and NEA organizations.

She was selected as the National Association for Sport and Physical Education 1996 Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year for Iowa and also the Central District. She was one of six candidates for the National Teacher of the Year Award in 1996.

In 1996 she was awarded a grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust Excellence in Education Teachers Program for an innovative classroom project involving the use of heart monitors for her students. Vicki has coached many sports for Norwalk, Carlisle, and Indianola schools.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Indianola.

She was a member and past president of the Warren County Genealogical Society. In 1994, Vicki had traveled with her mother to Europe and located the gravesite of her great-great-grandfather who was the Vicar of Llandysul Wales. Through research, she located her maternal grandmother's cousin, David Rhys-James and became friends, visited his home in England and corresponded regularly. She also located her maternal grandmother's cousin who also resides in England and visited her and her family.

Vicki was also active as an Adult Leader for the International group, "People to People Student Ambassadors" traveling to Australia, New Zealand, British Isles and Western Europe.

The great love of her life was her children. Ryan who is a junior at Indianola High School is involved in music and drama. Ryan is a member of the Indianola Jazz One and knows that his mother would have been so proud to see him at Championships. Vicki enjoyed traveling throughout Iowa the summer of 1997, watching Ryan play trombone as a member of the 1997 Iowa State Fair Singer and Jazz Band.

Shannon is also a junior at Indianola High School and is active in music and drama. Shannon treasures the memories of being involved in baton twirling with her Mom. They both remember their mother being so involved in all their activities. She was so proud of Ryan and Shannon making All-State Band, which was an accomplishment also of Vicki's. Vicki was current president of the Indianola Music Boosters.

Vicki is survived by her husband, Scott Montgomery, of Indianola; her son, Ryan and daughter, Shannon Montgomery, both at home; her parents, Harold and Donna Worley, of Mason City, Iowa; her sister, Sally Heuberger and her husband, John, of Sheffield, Iowa; her father and mother-in-law, Willis and Delores Montgomery, of Brooklyn, Iowa; as well as several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

** Avis Lindy Endreland

THOMPSON — Avis Lindy Endreland, 82, of Thompson died Monday (Feb. 16, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Richard Newgard officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Avis Lindy Endreland was born June 7, 1915, at Kanawha.

** Velma Rucker Hammond

MASON CITY — Velma Rucker Hammond, 91, of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. Robert Beard, of Sheffield, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Velma Hammond was born on Sept. 22, 1906, in Crocker, Mo., the daughter of Martin and Hannah (Teeple) Rucker. She attended country school outside of Crocker, Mo. until moving to the Mason City area in a covered wagon in 1915. She completed her education in the Plymouth school system.

She was employed at the Innes Department Store, which was later known as the Eaton Department Store in 1942. She moved to California where she worked for Freidens Corp. building airplane parts for the war works.

She was united in marriage to Albert Hammond in San Francisco on Aug. 2, 1944. They made their home in California until moving to the state of Washington in 1945. They moved back to Swaledale, Iowa in 1972. In 1981, they moved to Tucson, Ariz. until 1984, when they returned to Swaledale, Iowa.

She is survived by one brother, Wayne Rucker and his wife, Jonni, of Van Nuys, Calif.; and two sisters, Ruth Johnson, of Mason City, and Dorothy Thompson and her husband, Richard, of Rockwell, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, two brothers, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and one nephew.

** Florence Julia Millard

MASON CITY — Florence Julia Millard, 83, of 302 Second St. N.E., Mason City, formerly Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Feb. 17, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen, of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and will begin after 9 a.m. Friday.

The family suggests memorials to the Florence Julia Millard Memorial Fund.

Florence was born July 13, 1914 in Hanlontown, Iowa, the daughter of John and Ida Belle (Skellenger) Hodenfield. She attended school in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Florence married Cecil Millard on April 23, 1933 in Mason City, Iowa. They lived in the Mason City and Clear Lake area.

She and her husband owned and operated the first Maid Rite Cafe in Clear Lake. They then operated the truck stop cafe in Clear Lake. In the early 60s she cooked at Ritter's Nursing Home in Clear Lake.

Florence loved her family and friends and always had a smile for everyone. She enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida for many years.

Her hobbies included collecting bells, doing crafts and writing poems and sharing them with other people.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, where she was very active.

Florence is survived by two sons, Roger Millard and his wife, Charlene, Bangor, Maine; and Jerry Millard and his wife, Patricia, of Clear Lake, Iowa; and one daughter, Janice Millard, Clear Lake, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Scott S. Millard and his wife, Susan, of Levant, Maine; Jeffrey L. Millard, Bangor, Maine; Terry L. Millard and his wife, Tracy, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Todd M. Millard and his wife, Denise, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Teresa K. Millard, Mason City, Iowa; David M. Neuberger II and his wife, Kerry, Klemme, Iowa; Julia H. ** Irene A. Katcher

GREENE — A funeral Mass for Irene A. Katcher, 79, of 2725 March Ave., Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, in Greene, where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Irene A. Nixt was born June 20, 1918, at the home place, a daughter of Nicholas Frank and Mary C. (Kiefer) Nixt and died Friday (Feb. 13, 1998) at her home in rural Greene.

She received her education at the St. Mary's Academy in Greene graduating in 1936 and later took a business preparatory course. She was first employed at Albegore's General Store, and later worked at the Telephone office, both in Greene.

On Feb. 12, 1942 she was united in marriage to Frank K. Katcher at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. Following their marriage, she continued to work at the Telephone Office until Frank's discharge from the armed forces on Dec. 5, 1945 when they moved into Charles City. They lived in Charles City for three years, then moving to the home place where she lived until her death.

Irene and Frank spent many enjoyable hours together and put on many miles following their grandchildren to their sports and other activities. She enjoyed making clothes and quilts and baking cinnamon bread for her family and friends. Other interests included bird watching, flower gardening and handiwork, which included crocheting.

She was a lifelong faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene where she was active in the church circles and worked on the annual Fall Festival. She was a leader in the Floyd County 4-H and an Auxiliary member of the American Legion.

Living family members include two daughters, Barb Field, of Woodward; Nancy and her husband, Doug Truax, of Corydon; one son, Michael and his wife, Vicky, of Marble Rock; daughter-in-law, Nancy and her husband, Ron Fish, of Nashua; 12 grandchildren, Jay, Nick, and Mike Field, Brian and his wife, Amy Truax, Amanda and Kendra Truax, Jason and his wife, Joanna Katcher, Joshua and his wife, Amy Katcher, Jennifer Katcher, Katie and Matt Katcher; one great-grandchild, Breanna Katcher; and three stepgrandchildren, Tanya, Michelle and Adam Fish; her sister-in-law, Della Hutton, of Napperville, Ill.; and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Feb. 22, 1995; two daughters, Carmen and Michelle in infancy; a son, Dennis on Dec. 15, 1993.

Dorothy Farrer was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Erdix and Hattie (Anderson) Marlowe. Dorothy graduated from Mason City High School in 1937 and from the University of Iowa in 1941.

Dorothy worked for Hormel for a short time before she married Douglas J. Farrer on Dec. 24, 1941, in Mason City.

Dorothy then worked for a bakery in Richmond, Va. in sales. She also worked for her father at Marshall and Swift in Mason City, while her husband was in the service. Dorothy then worked for Redman Industries in Dallas, Texas, as a sales statistician for 18 years, retiring in 1979. Dorothy moved to Mason City in 1980.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Mary Martha and Tuckabachee Circles; H.E.O. Club and volunteered for KCMR Radio.

She is survived by one daughter, Anne Scott and her husband, Stephen, of Des Moines; one grandson, Timothy Scott, Okinawa, Japan; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Scott, Des Moines; and one brother, Charles Swift and his wife, Joyce, Clear Lake, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Douglas in 1979; two brothers, Erdix Jr. and Carroll; and one sister, Jean Keohen.

** Laura Wolf

BRITT — Laura Wolf, 95, of Britt, died Tuesday (Feb. 17, 1998) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel, officiating. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City, with a 7 p.m. scripture service.

Laura M. Wolf was born in Forest City, Iowa, on June 3, 1902, the daughter of Jesse and Margaret (Donohue) Otis. She then attended Forest City schools and graduated from Forest City High School.

On July 10, 1929, she was married to Marvin Wolf at St. James Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Forest City their entire married lives. Laura taught country school in Winnebago County for many years and also worked at Harrison's Dime Store in Forest City.

She was an active member of St. James Catholic Church where she taught Catechism and was Ladies Circle Leader.

Laura loved gardening, raising both flowers and vegetables. Her flowers graced the church altar for many weddings and services. She enjoyed sharing her bounty of raspberries with friends and relatives.

Marvin died in 1960. Laura continued living and working in Forest City. She entered the Westview Care Center in Britt in October of 1991.

She died there on February 17, 1998 at the age of 95 years.

Laura is survived by two children and their spouses, Donna and Joe Appelhons, of Britt, and Tom and Cheryl Wolf, of Loves Park, Ill.; also a brother and his wife, James and Agnes Otis, of Forest City; two sisters, Vivian Sampson, of Forest City, and Gloria Eymann, of Olathe, Kan.; two sisters-in-law, Violet Otis, of Madison Lake, Minn., and Lois Otis, of Forest City; brother-in-law, Mike and Ruth Wolf, of Fertile, Iowa; five grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Mervin, Roy and Merle Otis; two sisters-in-law, Edyth and Maxine Otis; two brothers-in-law, Lewes Eymann and Archie Sampson; and a nephew.

Irene Nitchals was born Feb. 17, 1916, in Ruthven.

Edna Anna Litterer Franke was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Clarksville.

** Russell LeRoy Rupe

NORTHWOOD — Russell LeRoy Rupe, 88, died Thursday (Feb. 12, 1998) at the Lutheran Retirement Home Northwood.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99- 11 th St. South, Northwood, with the Rev. Allan J. Stoa Officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Mt. Valley Cemetery, rural Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. prior to services on Sunday at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. S., Northwood.

Russell LeRoy Rupe was born on Sept. 25, l909, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of John and Ruby (Freeman) Rupe. He received his education in the Pemerton, Minn., school system.

Throughout his life Russell worked for the railroad, and at the time of his retirement in l969, he was an engineer for the Rock Island Railroad.

The family also lived in Las Vegas, Nev., until moving to Kensett in 1988. He had been a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood since 1995 .

He was a Lutheran by faith and a member of the Brotherhood of Local Engineers.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Rupe, of Northwood; eight children: Russell LeRoy Rupe Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; Carl Eugene Rupe of Huxley, Iowa.; Richard Ronald Rupe and his wife, Laurel, of Randolph, Minn.; Dorothy Louise Hagen and her husband, Tom, of Northwood; Betty Jean Boettcher and her husband, Richard of Fallon, Nev.; Robert Wayne Rupe and his wife Donna, of Kenyon, Minn.; Edna Mae Lestrud and her husband, Gerald, of Northwood; and Donald Gene Rupe and his wife, Linda, of Waterville, Minn.; 25 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and two great- great grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Rupe of Des Moines; and one sister, Phyllis Wharton, of Homedale, Idaho; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one great-grandson, Tom Stading, Jr.; one sister, Rosa Mae Hugo; and one brother, Raymond Rupe.

** Rose Pauline Pettey

MASON CITY — Rose Pauline Pettey, 85, of 1735 N. Delaware Ave., died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) at the Heritage Care Center.

Rose Pauline Pettey was born Dec. 20, 1912, at Scott's Bluff, Neb., the daughter of Adam and Anna (Rau) Groff. She lived most of her life in Mason City.

On April 3, 1934, she married Cecil L. Pettey in Mason City.

She liked to crochet, sew and bake German dishes. She enjoyed accompanying her husband, Cecil to bowling, and socializing with their friends.

Rose loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she was a devoted wife and mother.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Kropf and her husband, Garey, Mason City; one son, Gene Pettey and his wife, Roselyn, San Marcos, Texas; four grandchildren, Valerie Lang and her husband, Michael, Ankeny; Vickie Luttrell and her husband, Jamie, Mason City; Thad Pettey and his wife, Helen, San Marcos, Texas; and Kyle Pettey and his wife, Beth, Joplin, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren, Micaela and Taylor Lang; Charlie, Jared, Brandon, and Keegan Kropf; Jacob and Nikole Pettey; and Thomas Pettey; one brother, Alex Groff, Mason City; and one sister, Leah Worner, Two Harbors, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Cecil L. Pettey on Jan. 29, 1998; and three sisters, Rachel Kabe, Ella Frank, and Lydia Bindos.

** Leona M. Schrader

FOREST CITY — Leona M. Schrader, 81, of Forest City, formerly of Easton, Minn. died Wednesday (Feb. 18, l998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Easton, Minn., with Father John Wilmot officiating. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery, in Barber Township.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Homes, 255 Second Ave. S.W., Wells, Minn., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.. There will be further visitation one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Leona was born March 19, 1916 , in Faribault County, at Delavan, Minn., the daughter of Miner and Clara (Lyons) Trembley. Leona was united in marriage to Raymond J. Schrader.

Leona lived most of her life in the Easton area, then moved to Albert Lea, Minn. in 1983, and recently moved to Forest City, Iowa.

She was a former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Easton, Minn., and was currently a member of St. James Catholic Church in Forest City Iowa.

Survivors include two daughters: Betty Hanson, and her husband, Richard, of Little Rock, Ark., and Donna Olson, and her husband, Philip, of Woden, Iowa.; one stepson, Ted Schrader, and his wife, Joanne, of Albert Lea, Minn.;seven grandchildren, Karl Hanson and his wife, Angie; Kristen Hanson; Jonathan, Kristopher and Alex Olson; and Pat and Perry Schrader; one great grandchild, Tiffany Schrader; one sister, Florence and her husband, Dennis Miller, of Naples, Fla.; and one brother, Bunce Trembley, of Mesa, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; and two brothers, Lyndon and Francis Trembley.

** Ethel Kirchgatter

ST. ANSGAR — Ethel Kirchgatter, 78, formerly of 148 Clinton St., Mapleview, Minn., died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) at Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, at the United Methodist Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Ted W. Stowers, officiating. Interment will be at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Ethel was born Dec. 18, l919, to Violet and Herman Heschke in rural Mitchell County, Iowa. She attended country school in rural Mitchell County.

Ethel married Ellery K. Kirchgatter on June 26, l938.

They moved to Illinois, where Ellery worked at a hardware store. Later they returned to Iowa where they farmed in rural Mitchell County most of their lives. Together they raised three children.

Ethel enjoyed working with her husband on the farm where they milked cows and raised crops. Her hobbies included gardening, baking and canning.

Ethel is survived by her son, Richard (Dick) Kirchgatter, and his wife, Elaine, of Canton, Mich.; her daughter, Violet Wick of Mapleview, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert; her husband, Ellery; two brothers and two sisters.

** Mildred Westling Williams

OSAGE — Mildred Westling Williams, 95, of Osage died Thursday (Feb. 19, 1998) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church in rural Osage, with the Rev. Thomas Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Mildred was born May 6, 1902, near Orchard.

MASON CITY — Mary O'Leary, 97, of Mason City, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a 5 p.m. rosary conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court of Joan of Arc, No. 152, and the Athenian Study Club, with a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service.

Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church in memory of Mary O'Leary.

Mary O'Leary was born June 26, 1900 at Mason City, the daughter of William and Mary (Boyle) Colby. She attended schools in Mason City and in Dougherty.

In Feburary of 1922, she married Howard O'Leary at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.

Mary enjoyed working for the Red Cross and actively participated in their water safety and swimming programs. She was involved with the Red Cross Auxiliary during World War II.

She actively volunteered at the Charles H. MacNider Museum and at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Mary enjoyed playing golf and bridge, and also enjoyed many outdoor activities.

From 1940- to 1960, she participated in many golf tournaments in both Mason City and Clear Lake, winning several championships.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court of Joan of Arc, No.152, and the Athenian Study Club.

Survivors include one son, Howard O'Leary and his wife, Audrey, Clear Lake; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Neal Colby and his wife, Mary Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and their children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Howard O'Leary Sr.; one son, John Hanford; one daughter, Mario Kelly; five brothers; and one sister.

** Thomas Haugerud

KENSETT — Thomas Haugerud, 78, of Kensett, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center in Manly.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. (Sam) Hernes, officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to time of services on Monday at the Church.

The family of Thomas Haugerud has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, in his memory.

Thomas Haugerud was born on Dec. 16, 1919 in Valdres, Norway, the son of Ole and Inger (Skaar) Haugerud. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith in Norway.

He attended and received his education in the Valdres, Norway school system. After completing his schooling, he worked for various farmers as a hired hand and also for logging companies in Norway.

During World War II, he was in the underground army in Norway. In 1947, he moved to the United States where he settled in the Kensett area living with his brother, Ole Haugerud helping him to farm. In the 1950s, he began farming 40 acres of his own near Kensett, but continued to help his brother, Ole and his cousin, Marvin Bratrud, farm. He farmed until his retirement in 1976.

He enjoyed fishing, dancing, house painting, watching boxing on television. and visiting with his family and friends.

He was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, former member of the Sons of Norway, and was a member of the Valdres Sanband, an organization of the Norwegian Heritage.

Survivors include one sister, Thora Nybroten and her husband, Victor, of Kensett; nephews, Allen Nybroten, of Kensett, and Arvid Nybroten, of Berkeley, Calif., as well as several nieces and nephews in Norway; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and eight brothers and sisters.

** John Arnold Palmer

RENWICK — John "Jack" Arnold Palmer, 80, died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 1998) at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home, Eagle Grove.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Renwick, with the Rev. Karen Dearchs, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, rural Renwick.

John Arnold Palmer was born April 14, 1917, in Boone Township, Wright County, near Renwick.
