** Leona L. Schaffer

MASON CITY — Leona L. Schaffer, 77, of 1110 Sixth St. S.W., died Friday (Jan. 30, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral ser vices will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Bap tist Church, 125 E. State St., with the Rev. Ronald Stein officiat ing. Burial will be in Elm wood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bre mer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.

Leona L. Schaffer was born July 23, 1920, at Mankato, Minn., the daughter of Walter and Maude (Fowler) Stone. On Dec. 31, 1936, she married Don ald W. Schaffer at Mason City.

Leona enjoyed crafts and shop ping, and she always enjoyed planning for her family reunion. She also loved spending time with her grandkids and visiting her friends.

Survivors include her hus band, Donald Schaffer, of Mason City; three daughters, Beverly Mugan and her husband, Ray, of Des Moines, Sharren Olinger and her husband, Bill, of Mason City, and Shirley Olson of Mason City; one son, Ronald Schaffer and his wife, Dorothea, Iowa City; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grand children; one great-great-grand child; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Edith Whitney and her husband, Bob, of Mason City, and Gladys Jackson of Willmar, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and aunts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, two brothers, one infant granddaugh ter, one grandson, and one son in-law.

** Thelma Watson

MASON CITY — Thelma Watson, 84, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at the Willow Creek Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David R. Shogren officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Thornton.

Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

TITONKA — Carl Ludwig, 68, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Good Hope Lutheran Church.

** Mary I. Yezek

MANLY — Mary I. Yezek, 82, of 124 E. Main, died Friday (Jan. 30, 1998) at the Manly Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St.

Mary I. Trainer Yezek was born Feb. 3, 1915, at rural Wheelerwood, the daughter of Jess and Della (Winter) Trainer. When she was six months old she went to make her home with her grandmother, Mrs. David Winter, her Aunt Lillie, and her two uncles, Howard and Elmer, due to the illness of her mother.

She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1931, and then from Hamilton Business College in 1933. She was employed by the Cerro Gordo Soil Conservation Office for several years prior to her marriage.

In 1936, she was united in marriage to Albie Yezek at Galena, Ill.

Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and her friends. She also liked playing cards and really enjoyed playing bingo.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly, and the Manly Senior Citizens Club. She also was treasurer of the Manly Taxi Cab Company, and a member of a bridge club.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Yezek and his wife, Charlotte, of Manly; two daughters, Sharon Haag and her husband, Dewey, Mason City, and Mary Staley and her husband, Frank, of Dayton, Ohio; two step-daughters, Sr. Margarite Yezek of Stokie, Ill., and Florence Brown and her husband, Neil, of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Tammy Yezek of Manly, Scott Yezek and his wife, Glenda, of Mason City, Dan Yezek and his wife, Lisa, of Plymouth, Sheryl Mariner and her husband, Jon, of Mason City, Dean Haag and his wife, Kyla, of Mason City; seven great-grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua Yezek of Mason City, Bailey, Taylor and Elizabeth Yezek of Plymouth, and Joseph and Kristin Mariner of Mason City; one sister, Nona Wilson of Tucson, Ariz.; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Trainer of Mason City, and Hazel Trainer of Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her mother in 1918; her father in 1933; her husband, Albie, in 1969; two brothers, Harold and Lowell; and two sisters, Julie Pedersen and Agnes Eckert.

** Connie K. ‘Lumm’ Kuykendall

CHARLES CITY — Connie K. "Lumm" Kuykendall, 48, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at the Ninth St. Chautauqua Home from complications of Multiple Sclerosis.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sunnyside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Jay Larry Vallery of Trinity United Methodist Church, Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, and from 9 a.m. until time of services at the chapel.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Connie K. "Lumm" Kuykendall was born Aug. 24, 1949, to Earl and Vera (Baldwin) Lumm in Charles City. She was baptized at the First United Methodist Church in Charles City, and graduated from Charles City High School in 1967. On Feb. 17, 1968, she married Fred Kuykendall. They were divorced in October 1982. She was a homemaker and enjoyed raising her two daughters.

Survivors include her parents, Earl and Vera Lumm of Mason City; two daughters, Greg and Julie Van Auken and their son, Stephen, of Charles City, and Paul and Jennifer Johnson and their children, Heather, Alan and Richard, of Charles City; one sister, Brenda Lumm of Greene; two brothers, Douglas Lumm of Mason City, and Rodney and Diane Lumm and their children, Tiffany and Ryan, of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Lumm in 1958; paternal grandparents, Roland and Minnie Lumm; and maternal grandparents, Harold and Martha Baldwin.

** Ruth Higgins

MASON CITY — Ruth Higgins, 84, of 20 Fifth St. N.E., died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill and Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. A graveside committal service will be held at 1 p.m. at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Whittemore, with Father Ed Murray officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., where they will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Holy Family Handicap Accessibility Project in memory of Ruth Higgins.

Ruth Higgins was born May 28, 1913, in Sioux City, the daughter of Michael P. and Elizabeth M. (Fleming) Higgins. Ruth moved with her family to Kossuth County as a child. She graduated from the Presentation Academy in 1933, in Whittemore. For eight years she helped on the farm, doing gardening and harvesting fruits. In 1942, her family moved to Cerro Gordo County and she worked odd jobs until World War II. Ruth then attended and graduated from LaJames College of Hairstyling in 1943. She worked in various local beauty shops until she took an interest in taking care of sick and injured people in area nursing homes and Mercy Hospital. Ruth then was a nurses aid at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital for 14½ years, retiring in 1978. Ruth’s hobbies included gardening, flowers, painting and walking. Ruth was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Survivors include one brother, Raymond Higgins and his wife, Josephine, of Rock Falls; three nieces, Kathy Higgins of Vernon Hill, Ill., Joanne Higgins of Coralville, and Maureen Higgins of East Troy, Wis.; three nephews, Robert Higgins of Eagle, Wis., Dennis Higgins of Mason City, and Donald Higgins of Yuma, Colo.; special care-giver, Shelly Higgins of Mason City; sister-in-law, Arlene Higgins of Mason City; five great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Michael, in 1952; her mother, Elizabeth, in 1964; and her brother, Luke, in 1968.

** Dale Hearn

DUMONT — Dale Hearn, 72, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) in Cherokee Village, Ark.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

** Gloria A. Hugelen

CLEAR LAKE — Gloria A. Hugelen, 64, of St. Paul, Minn., passed away on Friday (Jan. 30, 1998) in a St. Paul care center.

She was a graduate of Clear Lake High School and attended the University of Iowa.

Burial of cremains will be held at a later date at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa.

Holcomb-Henry-Boom Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her step mother, Bernice Hugelen, of Algona, and several cousins.

** Vatere J. (V.J.) Cooper

MASON CITY — Vatere J. (V.J.) Cooper, 85, of 825 N. Carolina Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 29, 1998) of natural causes at Heritage Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests memorials be given to the Mason City Public Library, radio station KCMR, or for missions at the First Baptist Church.

V.J. was born in Fort Dodge on Jan. 18, 1913, the first child, born to William Dennis and Estella Cooper. His family moved to Mason City where he attended school and graduated in 1929. Due to the early deaths of his parents, at age 18, he kept his family together by foregoing further education and entering the work place. He worked for the WPA, Decker’s Meat Packing Plant, and International Harvester, where he worked in the parts department. He spent the major part of his life as a salesman for Farmall Machinery in the Mason City area. His hobbies included reading, bowling, photography and pool. In later years he served in several capacities in his church. On Jan. 18, 1942, he married Frieda M. Johannsen. He was the father of twin girls, Janice Garcia of Mason City, and Johanna Anderson of Osage, and a younger daughter, Maureen Galloway of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and younger brother, Maurice Cooper of Sioux Falls, S.D.

In addition to his wife and daughters, survivors include his three sisters, Arlene Waughtal of Weslaco, Texas, Mildred Hert of Mesa, Ariz., and Pat Lerberg of Mesa, Ariz. and Parshall, N.D. His grandchildren include Angela Cordle of Omaha, Neb., Autumn Anderson of Blue Springs, Mo., Judd Galloway of Bosnia, Emily Galloway of Ames, and Kelly Galloway of Burlington.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Heritage Care Center for the excellent care and attention they provided.

MASON CITY — Kenneth E. Barker, 89, of 691 15th St. S.E., died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

** Thelma Watson

MASON CITY — Thelma Watson, 84, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at the Willow Creek Care Center.

Thelma I. Watson was born in Sheffield on Feb. 15, 1913, the daughter of Fred and Florence (Zook) Ward. She attended school in Swaledale and graduated with the class of 1930. She then went to attend Hamilton Business College in Mason City, and worked for the Swaledale Grocery Store as a clerk and bookkeeper.

She was united in marriage to Burton C. Watson on Jan. 20, 1937, in the rectory of First United Methodist Church of Mason City. They started farming near Thornton and continued until retirement and moved to Mason City in 1978. Thelma enjoyed spending time with her family, growing flowers and working with the Swaledale Methodist Women’s Circle. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Her husband, Burton C. Watson, of Mason City, survives her. Also, three sons, Roger Watson and his wife, Carol Adams, of Mason City, Gary and Barbara Watson of Mason City and David Watson of Helena, Mont.; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Campbell and her husband, Marc, of Carlinville, Ill., Catherine Watson and her husband, Jeff Hirsch, of Troy, Ohio, Sarah Slotky and her husband, Ben, of Indianapolis, Ind., Scott Watson of Mason City, Marcia Watson of Bloomington, Minn., and Bill, Ted, Carne and Kit Watson of Helena, Mont.; one stepgrandson, Peter Russell of New York, N.Y.; one stepgranddaughter, Ellen Fast and her husband, Mike, of New Hartford, Conn.; one sister, Ruth Rovang and her husband, John, of Joice; and one brother, Delbert (Freddie) Ward and his wife, Esther, of Swaledale.

She was preceded in death by her father, Fred I Ward; her mother, Florence (Zook) Ward; and four brothers, Virgil, Willard, J.C., and Donald.

** John H. Heyer

CHARLES CITY — John H. Heyer, 76, died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hauser Funeral Home.

** Carroll Arthur Bamford

BELMOND — Carroll Arthur Bamford, 81, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at the Kanawha Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ Congregational with the Rev. Cindy Mueller officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Carroll Bamford Memorial Fund.

Carroll Arthur Bamford was born on Sept. 20, 1916, in Belmond, to Percy and Matilda (Hanson) Bamford. He attended the Hickory Grove School northwest of Belmond through the eighth grade and then went on to graduate from Belmond High School in 1933. Carroll farmed with his father north of Belmond until May 6, 1941, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

While serving his country during World War II, Carroll was stationed overseas in England, Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Scotland and Germany with the "Engineers." He received his honorable discharge in Chicago in August, 1945.

On Sept. 5, 1947, Carroll was united in marriage to Mary Jeanne Bailey in Mason City. They have two daughters, Sharon and Cindy.

Upon returning from the service, Carroll entered the carpentry field until 1948, when he became a clerk-carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was later promoted to clerk. When he retired on July 1, 1974, Carroll was the assistant to the postmaster in Belmond.

Since his retirement Carroll had kept busy on their acreage, working in his shop on special carpentry projects. He loved being outside, gardening and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He was a great woodworker and made many things for his children and grandchildren. In May of 1994, Carroll and Jeanne moved to downtown Belmond. Carroll remained active after losing his wife in November of 1994, even though he was in failing health.

His survivors include two daughters, Sharon Rod and her husband, Richard, of Wheaton, Ill., and Cindy Wegman and her husband, Gale, of Belmond; four grandchildren, Megan Wegman of Belmond and Joshua, Molly and Dana Rod, all of Wheaton; and one brother, Loren Bamford and his wife, Lirlene, of Belmond.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanne; three sisters, Grace, Leota and Lola; a grandson, Daniel Rod; and a granddaughter, Courtney Rod.

** Mary Agnes Hogan

ROCKWELL — Mary Agnes Hogan, 100, died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at the Rockwell Nursing Home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

MASON CITY — Gladys Myrton, 88, of 1735 Hillcrest Drive, died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at the Rockwell Care Center.

** Carl Ludwig

TITONKA — Funeral services for Carl Ludwig, 68, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Good Hope Lutheran Church. Rev. Merlin Norris will officiate and burial will be in Buffalo Township Cemetery. Carl died at his home on Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998).

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home. There will also be visitation at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the time of service.

Carl was born on Aug. 1, 1929, in rural Whittemore, the son of Leo and Mary (Kober) Ludwig. He attended rural school. Carl farmed and worked for the Tillofson Elevator Construction Company.

Carl was married to Janice Kinseth on Sept. 16, 1950, at West Bend. They lived in Emmetsburg, Texas, and Forest City until 1956, when they moved to Titonka. He ran the Tyke Service Center and then started the Ludwig Ready Mix Company, which he operated for many years. Carl was an active member of the Titonka Fire Department and served on the City Council for four terms. He was noted as being Santa Claus for the town for many years.

Carl is survived by his wife, Janice, of Titonka; one son, Gary, and his wife, Barbara, of Forest City; and one daughter, Pamela, and her husband, Jim Hansen, of Hampton. There are two grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild. Also surviving are brothers, Madean Ludwig of West Bend, Wayne Ludwig of Churchville, Md., Donald Ludwig of Algona, Merle Ludwig of Humboldt, Joe Ludwig of Bode and John Ludwig of Emmetsburg; and sisters, Phyliss, Mrs. Gene Wallace, of Bradgate, Delores, Mrs. Walt Ulrich, of Ringsted, and Sandi, Mrs. Bill Devereaux, of Pocahontas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

** Delores Mae Truax

ALLISON — Delores Mae Truax, 71, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bristow Church of Christ with the Rev. Gerald Volk officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Bristow.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Delores Mae Truax was born Nov. 20, 1926, in Parkersburg.

Survivors include four sisters, Lucena Truax of Allison, Elizabeth Kriens of Tama, Shirley Johnson of Bristow and Louise Carrison of Olathe, Kan.; and one brother, John Truax of O’Fallen, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

MASON CITY — Esther L. Birdsall, 99, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

** Kenneth E. Barker

MASON CITY — Kenneth E. Barker, 89, of 691 15th St. S.E., died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. James B. Norem of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Kenneth was born June 16, 1908, at Humboldt, the son of Frank G. And Jessica (Boor) Barker. He graduated from Plymouth High School. He was married to Charlotte H. Tobsing on June 11, 1932, at Britt. Kenneth drove trucks and worked in the warehouse for Friesner Fruit, Hoxie Fruit and Gamble Robinson. He retired in 1967 from Consolidated Foods. He was an avid reader and hunter and enjoyed clay bird shooting. He was a member and one of the organizers of the Teamsters Union No. 828.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda L. Barker of Mason City; one son, Don E. Barker and his wife, Geri, of Mason City; and sisters-in-law, Marie George and Martha Friend, both of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlotte, in 1948; a daughter, Elizabeth, at birth; and a brother, Arthur.

CENTERVILLE — Roger L. Dyre, 61, died Friday (Jan. 30, 1998) at his home.

A private graveside service will be held and burial will occur in Oakland Cemetery. Lange Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation was held Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to the Hospice of Central Iowa. Memorial contributions may be addressed to the funeral home.

Roger L. Dyre was born April 9, 1936, in Mason City, the son of Viva and Beatrice (Sears) Dyre. He married Jo Gardner in Centerville on Nov. 24, 1984. She survives.

Roger graduated from high school and one year of building trades at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville. He was a trucker for 23 years and then worked eight years at Voltmaster. He served three years in the U.S. Army as a specialist third class. He loved to fish, work in the garden and with flowers, carpenter work and just being outdoors.

Also surviving are his parents, Viva and Beatrice Dyre of Mason City; one brother, James Dyre and his wife, Colleen, of Clear Lake; three sisters, Audrey Huff and her husband, Duane, of Mason City, Gloria George and her husband, Gary, of Northwood, and Janice Rippen of Nora Springs. He was a daddy and papaw to Jo’s children and grandchildren who also survive, Kelli Long, Kim Tandy, Kerri Mihalovich, Missi Cisler and Kevin, and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Chasity Shiltz.

MASON CITY — M. Irene Kornhauser, 90, of 304 Second St. N.E., died Monday (Feb. 2, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines, with the Rev. Robert Towner, of St. John's Episcopal Church in Mason City, officiating. Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at Dunn’s Funeral Home in Des Moines.

MASON CITY — Esther L. Birdsall, 99, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wayside Chapel at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Esther L. Birdsall was born July 6, 1898, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mary Louise (Stinner) Wagner. She received her schooling in Iowa City and worked as a secretary upon graduating from high school.

She married Addison G. Birdsall on March 8, 1926, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Esther and her husband, Addison, started Birdsall’s Ice Cream in 1931. Eight years after opening the ice cream parlor, Addison died, leaving Esther to run the business and raise her 10-year-old son, Bob. Esther managed the business until Bob took over in 1950.

Esther enjoyed playing bridge and tending her flower garden.

She was a member of White Shrine, Executive Club, Order of the Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church.

Her survivors include a daughter-in-law, Ellie Mersereau and her husband, Harold, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Ann Beasley and her husband, Byron, of Mason City; Tom Birdsall and his wife, Julie, of Mason City, and Sue Orton and her husband, Paul, of Mason City; eight great-grandchildren, Christen, Rob and Abby Beasley, Paul and Megan Birdsall, and Sam, Jessie and Haley Orton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, four brothers and one sister.

** Mary Agnes ‘Mayme’ Hogan

ROCKWELL — Mary Agnes "Mayme" Hogan, 100, formerly of 218 Third St. N., died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at the Rockwell Nursing Home.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 Elm St. East, Rockwell, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart Parish Center in Rockwell, with a scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Parish Center until the funeral Mass.

Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Agnes Hogan was born Aug. 7, 1897, in Rockwell, the daughter of Frank J. and Catherine (Funk) Scholl. She attended country schools after which she began working in the millenary at the Sterling Department Store in Mason City.

On Nov. 10, 1925, she married John Hogan of Dougherty, where they resided for five years until moving to Rockwell. It was there that Mary began her nursing career at her sister Lucy’s, Rockwell Hospital. When the hospital was converted to a rest home, she began nursing in Mason City. She was a registered nurse at both Mercy and Park hospitals plus private duty. People remember her for the kindness and care she showed them, while under her care.

Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary and the Senior Citizens.

She loved to have visitors and always was ready for a "game" of cards. She was also a great cook and loved to bake bread and rolls.

She is survived by her only child, Mary Catherine Chubb and her husband, Wayne, Alpine, Calif.; three grandchildren, Barbara Goggin, Des Moines, Patty Chisholm, El Cajon, Calif., and Tom Goggin, of Chula Vista, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Brian and Matt of Des Moines, Traycee of El Cajon, Calif., and Joshua and Andrew, of Chula Vista, Calif.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1972; her parents, Frank and Catherine; all of her brothers, Peter, Nicholas, Albert, Art, Bill, George, Ray and Frank Scholl; and her two sisters, Christine Roehner and Lucy Smith.

** Lester V. ‘Les’ Wenzel

CLEAR LAKE — Lester V. "Les" Wenzel, 70, of 126 N. 14th St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Feb. 2, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Military honors will be given by Clear Lake VFW at the church.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Lester V. Wenzel Memorial Fund.

Lester was born Feb. 25, 1927, in Hardwick, Minn., the son of Karl and Frieda (Ahrendt) Wenzel. He was baptized April 17, 1927, at Zion Lutheran Church, in Hardwick, Minn., and confirmed July 13, 1941, at Zion Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Hauser. Lester attended Luverne High School in Luverne, Minn.

Lester served in the United States Air Force. He married Dorothy Stageberg on Jan. 23, 1954, in Baltic Lutheran Church, Baltic, S.D.

Lester worked for John Lysdale Pipestone Sales in Pipestone, Minn., from 1953 to 1956, then worked for Strato TV and Marine until 1962. From 1962 to 1964, he ran and operated Wenzel Sales and Services (Dairy Equipment). He started working for Moorman’s Feeds in 1964 and worked for them until 1967 when he went to work for Walnut Grove Products, transferring to Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1972 due to his job. After his retirement, he ran a yard service in Clear Lake.

Lester was well known for his colorful umpiring of games that he called for more than 30 years. He was elected to the Clear Lake Council on Nov. 8, 1983.

His hobbies included fishing, cooking and gardening. He was well known for his great tomato plants. Other hobbies were playing cards, coffee time with his friends, especially at the Deli, and spending time the last two years at the Clear Lake Senior Center, where he met many new friends and enjoyed their fellowship, reminiscing about farming. He enjoyed going out to his Ventura farm.

Lester was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa; the Clear Lake V.F.W. and the Clear Lake Noon Lions.

Lester is survived by his wife, Dorothy Wenzel, Clear Lake; three children, David Wenzel and his wife, Judy, White Bear Lake, Minn., Diana Wenzel, San Antonio, Texas, and Lori Nelson and her husband, Dana, Bainbridge, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Kirby Nelson, Jill Nelson, Charley Nelson, Erik Nelson, Erin Wenzel, Alexi Wenzel and Abby Wenzel; three brothers, Alvin Wenzel and his wife, Lois, Hastings, Minn., Arnold "Bud" Wenzel and his wife, Jessie, of Hardwick, Minn., and Russell Wenzel and his wife, Doris, Luverne, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, one sister, Arlene Wenzel, and one infant brother, Raymond Wenzel.

MASON CITY — Thelma Watson, 84, of Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) at the Willow Creek Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. David R. Shogren officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton.

Thelma I. Watson was born in Sheffield on Feb. 15, 1913, the daughter of Fred and Florence (Zook) Ward. She attended school in Swaledale and graduated with the class of 1930. She went on to attend Hamilton Business College in Mason City and worked for the Swaledale Grocery Store as a clerk and bookkeeper.

She was united in marriage to Burton C. Watson on Jan. 20, 1937, in the rectory of First United Methodist Church of Mason City. They started farming near Thornton until retirement and moved to Mason City in 1978.

Thelma enjoyed spending time with her family, growing flowers and working with the Swaledale Methodist Women’s Circle.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Her husband, Burton C. Watson, of Mason City, survives her. She also is survived by three sons, Roger Watson and his wife, Carol Adams, of Mason City, Gary and Barbara Watson, of Mason City, and David Watson, of Helena, Mont.; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Campbell and her husband, Marc, of Carlinville, Ill., Catherine Watson and her husband, Jeff Hirsch, of Troy, Ohio; Sarah Slotky and her husband, Ben, of Indianapolis, Ind., Scott Watson, of Mason City, Marcia Watson, of Bloomington, Minn., Bill, Ted, Carrie and Kit Watson, of Helena, Mont.; one stepgrandson, Peter Russell, of New York City, N.Y.; and one stepgranddaughter, Ellen Forte-Fast and her husband, Mike, of Grandby, Conn.; two great-grandchildren, Alanne and Matt Campbell, of Carlinville, Ill.; one sister, Ruth Rovang and her husband, John, of Joice; and one brother, Delbert (Freddie) Ward and his wife, Esther, of Swaledale, Iowa.

** Roger L. Dyre

CENTERVILLE — Roger L. Dyre, 62, passed away Friday (Jan. 30, 1998) at his home in Centerville of cancer.

Funeral services and burial were held at Centerville.

He was born on April 9, 1936, on a farm northeast of Mason City, the son of Viva and Beatrice (Sears) Dyre.

He attended grade school at Owen #5 in the country north of Cartersville. He went on to the schools in Rockford.

Roger served in the U.S. Army, with overseas duty in France.

He worked for Briggs Truck Line for 12 ½ years in Mason City, then drove for other trucking companies for many years. He settled in Centerville, Iowa, with his wife, Jo, and her family and worked for a battery company.

He will be missed by his loving wife, Jo; his children, Tim, Richard and Lorrie and their families; his parents, Viva and Beatrice Dyre, of Mason City; his stepchildren and their families; and his father-in-law; a brother, James Dyre and his wife, Colleen, of Clear Lake; sisters, Audrey and her husband, Duane Huff, of Mason City, Gloria and her husband, Gary George, of Northwood, Janice Rippen, of Nora Springs; his aunts, Iva Scarrow, of Lindstrom, Minn., and Evelyn Dyer, of Nora Springs; uncles, Elmer Dyre, of Virginia, Guymon Sears, of Mason City, and Tilman Sears and his wife, Lucille, of Clear Lake, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Richard and Mary (Combs) Dyre; maternal grandparents, Clem H. and Emma (Stokes) Sears, and several aunts and uncles.

** Edith Mae Gunderson

NORTHWOOD — Edith Mae Gunderson, 95, of Northwood, died Monday (Feb. 2, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. South, Northwood, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Edith Mae Gunderson was born on Sept. 22, 1902, in Kanawha, Iowa, the daughter of Ole H. and Ellen (Sampson) Severson.

She was baptized on Oct. 19, 1902, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation in the Kanawha Lutheran Church in Kanawha.

She attended and received her education in the Kanawha school system, graduating from Kanawha High School. She also attended Waldorf College in Forest City.

After completing her schooling, she taught in rural schools near Kanawha. She also was a Maytag sales representative in Worth and Cerro Gordo counties.

She was united in marriage to Ernest O. Gunderson on Nov. 25, 1939, in Northwood.

After their marriage, she was the owner and operator of the Norman Cosmetic Studio in Fort Dodge, owner and operator of the Edythe Mae Dress Shop in Albert Lea, Minn., and along with her husband, Ernest, they owned and operated the Arlington Hotel in Lake Mills for nine years.

She enjoyed reading, church activities and her Semper Fidelis Study Club.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and was very active in church activities. She taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the Joanna and Judith circles at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. She also was a lifetime member of the North Iowa Girl Scout Council and was a former Girl Scout leader in Northwood.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Ernest Gunderson, of Northwood; one daughter, Cher Ami Barr and her husband, Roger, of Northwood; one grandson, Charles Barr, of Albert Lea, Minn.; one granddaughter, Debra Barr, of Story City, Iowa; several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.

MASON CITY — Gladys Myrton, 88, of 1735 Hillcrest Drive, died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at the Rockwell Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today and until time of services on Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Gladys Myrton was born April 20, 1909, in Hazleton, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Rosa (Biglow) Bates.

She and her parents moved to Lamont, Iowa, when she was one year old. Gladys grew up in Lamont and attended and graduated from Lamont High School in 1926. She then attended Upper Iowa University graduating with a degree in music in 1928. Gladys taught music in Dow City, Riceville and Pawnee, Ill.

She married Harold Myrton on Sept. 12, 1931, in Rock Island, Ill. She and her husband lived in Ames, Iowa, until 1935, when he graduated from Iowa State University. She was a member of the Iowa State University Music Department for three years and participated in most of the musical productions presented by the school.

She and her husband moved to Mason City in 1936. Gladys worked for Merkels for two years and taught second grade at Madison Elementary and at Lincoln School for 23 years.

She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Drake University in 1957. Gladys retired from teaching in 1971.

Gladys was a member of First United Methodist Church, National Retired Teachers Association and Sigma Alpha Iota, a national honorary music fraternity.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Myrton, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Mary Behrens and her husband, Paul, of Mason City; niece, Cheryl Christians and her husband, Greg, and their daughter, Sara, of Mason City; niece, Judy Eilers and her sons, Robert and Kevin, of Mason City; nephew, Mark Fitzgerald and his wife, Lydia, and their daughters, Rachel and Rebekah, of Faribault, Minn.; and nephew, Joseph Fitzgerald, of Austin, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Marilyn was born Sept. 1, 1936, in rural Bloomfield, Iowa, to Walter and Waneta Snoddy Guinn.

She married Thomas J. Stackhouse on Dec. 12, 1970, in Marion.

She worked as a lab technician at Rockwell-Collins for 30 years before retiring in 1992.

She was a member of the St. Pius X Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas; three daughters, Suzanne Dumont, of North Liberty; Lisa Stackhouse, Cedar Rapids; and Denise Fresh, Denver, Colo.; a son, Curtis Fresh, Denver, Colo.; her father, Walter Guinn, of Bloomfield; a sister, Patricia Wagler, of Clear Lake; and two brothers, Craig Guinn, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Jerry Guinn, of Bloomfield; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Waneta Guinn; and her stepmother, Viola Guinn.

** Margaret L. Bird

OSAGE — Margaret L. Bird, 86, of Osage, died Monday (Feb. 2, 1998) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Christian Missionary Alliance Church, with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Margaret L. Bird was born Jan. 14, 1912, on the family farm near Riceville in Mitchell County.

She is survived by two daughters, Lucille Wieland, of Greencastle, Ind., and Lois Rider, of Waterloo; two sons, Larry Bird, of Osage, and Doug Bird, of Waverly; two brothers, Donald Asfahl, of Louisville, Ky., and Ralph Asfahl, of Riceville; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Eugene A. Collins was born Oct. 24, 1922, in Hammond, Ind.

DUMONT — Dale Hearn, 72, of Dumont, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 1998) in Cherokee Village, Ark.

Trent Bartels was born on July 11, 1979, in Osage.

** Gerald T. Hartwell

MASON CITY — Gerald T. Hartwell, 83, of 1531 Sixth Place S.E., Apt. 109, Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus.

His body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Unit ed Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Doug Anderson officiat ing. A family graveside inurn ment will take place before the service at 9:30 a.m. at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, with military honors conducted by the Nora Springs American Legion HDS #449.

Gerald's family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Gerald was born Sept. 4, 1914, on a farm northeast of Charles City, son of Percy and Lottie (Fouch) Hartwell. He married Moneta Deloris "Brownie" Gast on Sept. 19, 1937.

Gerald moved with his family to a farm southwest of Nora Springs in 1922, where he attended school and helped his father farm, until the family moved into Nora Springs in 1929. At this time, Gerald helped his father in the trucking business until he was drafted into the Army Air Force in 1942. He served his country for three years, returning home in 1946, where he got back into the truck ing business.

Gerald drove truck most of his life. He worked for several years for American Crystal Sugar, Davey and Moen Construction, and finished out his working life with the city of Mason City Street Department.

In retirement, Gerald drove a Mason City transit bus for sever al years, loved to coffee with his friends, and was always there to help drive his friends to many places. He was deeply loved by his friends and family.

Survivors include his son, Gerry Hartwell and his wife, Glo ria Jean (Stangler), of Arvada, Colo.; one grandson, Todd Hartwell, of Arvada, Colo.; two brothers, Danny Hartwell, Mason City, and Paul Hartwell, Clear Lake; two sisters, Char lotte Tipton, of San Diego, Calif.; and Helen Crowell, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Moneta; and infant son; three brothers, Leland, Gilbert, and Vaughn Hartwell.

** Lawrence Norene Gesme

HANLONTOWN — Lawrence Norene Gesme, 85, of Hanlon town, died Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) at the Manly Nurs ing & Rehab Center in Manly.

Funeral ser vices will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Grace Lutheran Church, Han lontown, with the Rev. Linda Johnson officiat ing. Burial will be in the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlon town.

Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly; and one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.

Lawrence Norene Gesme was born on Jan. 17, 1913, in rural Worth County, Iowa, near Han lontown, the son of Henry Orvin and Inga Sophie (Storre) Gesme. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran Faith in Hanlontown.

He attended and received his education in the Hanlontown Consolidated School system, graduating from Hanlontown High School in 1931. He also attended and graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City.

He was united in marriage to Doris Kaasa on Jan. 1, 1936, in Hanlontown. She preceded him in death on Nov. 5, 1988.

After their marriage they moved to a farm east of Lake Mills, then to the Hanlontown area where they continued to farm until his retirement, mov ing into Hanlontown. He had been a resident of the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center since Oct. 26, 1990, suffering from Parkinsons Disease.

Lawrence was a lifelong resi dent of the Hanlontown area. He and his family farmed for 40 years until he retired in 1983. While engaged in farming, Lawrence became involved in community activities, public affairs and education for his com munity.

In 1984, he became mayor of Hanlontown and was mayor for three terms. As a founder and active participating member of the Community Betterment Organization, Lawrence was instrumental in the city of Han lontown receiving numerous awards from the state for the many community betterment projects he helped to organize. He also served on the North Cen tral Community School Board for 17 years, and was instrumental in its organization, both as a member and president. He also served on the board of directors for many community organiza tions.

He has received the Outstand ing Senior Citizen Award for North Iowa, which represents an eight-county area. He has served as chairman of the Worth County Area Advisory Council for Senior Citizens. He has also served three times as a member of the Older Iowans Legislature. He was a lifelong active participant in the Republican Party. He served on the board of the Manly Care Center.

Lawrence received the Waldorf College Alumni Distinguished Service Award in October, of 1989, which read, "For lifelong service to social concerns of church and community, and for exemplary leadership in fulfilling civic duties."

Lawrence was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Han lontown and had been superin tendent or teacher in the parish educational program for the past 40 years at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown. He also served as chairman and member of the Church Council numerous times.

Left to cherish his memory is one son, Luther Gesme and his wife, Kay, of Paullina, Iowa; one daughter, Deborah Ritz and her husband, Dale, of Truman, Minn.; four grandchildren, Jodi Bentele and her husband, Bruce, of Round Lake, Minn., Trent Blinkman and his wife, Laura of St. Paul, Minn., Jill Bennett and her husband, Russell, of Paulli na, Iowa, and Jayson Gesme of Iowa City, Iowa; three great grandchildren, Bradley and Brett Bentele, and Amy Lynn Bennett; one brother, Henry "Sam" Gesme and his wife, Naoma of Clear Lake; one sister, Idona Schott, of Mason City; and one sister-in law, Vernis Gesme, of Hanlon town; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents; twin daughters who died in infancy; one great-grandson who died in infancy; and one brother, Stanley Gesme.

PUYALLUP, Wash. — Leone M. Dockstader, 102, was born March 19, 1895 in Spring Valley Township, Iowa, and passed away Sunday (Feb. 1, 1998) in Puyallup, Wash.

Private services will be held. Inurnment will be in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif. Powers Funeral Home, 320 West Pioneer, Puyallup, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Leone was a resident of Rudd, Iowa, from 1922 to 1951. Leone was the wife of the late Dr. H.A. Dockstader, who was a veterinar ian in Rudd.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Methodist Church, both of Rudd.

She is survived by her daugh ter and son-in-law, Margaret Joyce and Maurice Muller, of Eatonville, Wash.; seven grand children; four great-grandchil dren; one great-great-grand daughter; brother, Dale Lenz, of Rolfe, Iowa; and sister, Bessie Kilgore, of San Bernardino, Calif.

Mary Mathilda Smith-Cuypers was born Sept. 25, 1918, in Dick ey, N.D.

She was a former member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City. She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Carmichael, Calif.

She is survived by five daugh ters, Barbara Smith, Carmichael, Calif.; Mary Jean Hohn, Rock ford, Ill.; Ellen O'Malley, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Donna Gerhart, Sacramento, Calif.; and Marlene Darling, Susanville, Calif.; one son, Neil Smith, Kearney, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and two sis ters, Verna Mae Schrader and Gerry Roscoe, both of Jamestown, N.D.

Norman Eugene Schober was born July 15, 1925, in Clear Lake.

He was a harbor master in Cape Coral, Fla. He was a dance instructor. He drove school bus for Clear Lake.

ALDEN — Fred Mills, 73, of Alden, Iowa, passed away Mon day (Feb. 2, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, of emphysema.

John Frederick "Fred" Mills was born Jan. 23, 1925, at Sargeant, Minn., the son of Orville S. and Leona Catherine 'Berlin' Mills. He attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools.

He was united in marriage to Jean Brownlee at Iowa Falls, Iowa, and they were later divorced.

On Sept. 22, 1993, he was unit ed in marriage to Helen Ross, at Alden, Iowa.

Fred was an equipment opera tor/engineer in Brisbane, Calif., before retiring to Alden.

He was a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188, Iowa Falls, and a vet eran of the United States Navy in World War II.

Fred is survived by his wife, Helen Mills, of 311 Walnut Street, Alden, Iowa; two daugh ters, Twila Luker and husband, Norm, and Tanya Dahl and hus band, LaVern, both of Mason City, Iowa; three granddaugh ters, Deanna Loeschen and hus band, Duane, of Woden, Iowa; Tiffani Allen and husband, Brad, of Hampton, Iowa and Courtny Dahl, of Mason City; and one grandson, Scott Palmer, of Plano, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Brittany Loeschen, of Algona, Iowa; and one brother, Milton Mills and his wife, Joyce, of Iowa Falls, Iowa.

** Kenneth Vernon Stone

MASON CITY — Kenneth Vernon Stone, 74, of 1711 S. Massachu setts Ave., died Wednes day (Feb. 4, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpa tient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral ser vices will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Penn sylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Inter ment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military rites by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Memorials may be given to Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit or the Kenneth V. Stone Memorial Fund.

Kenneth V. Stone was born March 20, 1923, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Kenneth and Iva (Carlson) Stone. He spent most of his growing up years in Rapid City, S.D. and graduated from there in 1942. While he was in high school, he was state champi on in singles and doubles tennis for two years.

Kenneth served in the U.S. Army and while stationed in Austin, Texas, he married Jean Schmitz on Nov. 6, 1944.

After his discharge from the service in 1945, they lived in Mason City for a while, then moved back to Rapid City until returning to Mason City in 1949.

Kenneth worked at Lehigh Portland Cement Co. for several years and then worked for the elevator in Swaledale. In 1961, he started to work for Hy-Cross Chick Co. and worked there until he retired in 1987.

In his younger years, Kenny loved to dance and loved his game of golf, which he played from 1950 until he could no longer play in 1995. He loved to play with his grandchildren and to play ball with his dog, Teddi.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

He will be greatly missed by his family.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Stone; one son, David Stone and his wife, Vicki, of Mason City; two daughters, Barbara J. Haffner, Perrysburg, Ohio, and Nancy K. Goecke and her hus band, Vince, of Great Falls, Mont.; two granddaughters, Michelle Lee, of Mason City, and Christi Stone Huth, of New Kensington, Pa.; two grandsons, Paul Goecke, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jason Goecke, of Billings, Mont.; two stepgranddaughters, Tanya and Toni Martin, of Mason City; four great-grand sons, Michael Ramirez, Jacob Lee, Robert Stone, and Andrew Huth; one great-granddaughter, Katie Lee; one brother, Orville C. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association in mem ory of Ardene Brandau Koelder.

Ardene was born Aug. 8, 1904, in Nora Springs, the daughter of Wylie and Maggie (Bracken) Eggers. She graduated from Nora Springs High School and attended nurses training at Park Clinic in Mason City.

Ardene married Florian A. Brandau on Oct. 20, 1924. They lived on the Rudd farm until 1944 when her husband died. She moved her family to Mason City and was employed at Mercy Hospital for many years.

She was an avid card player and belonged to several bridge clubs and marathons. Ardene also enjoyed jig-saw puzzles and displayed them on the lower level of her home at 5 Asbury Court in Mason City.

She was an active member of the Eden Presbyterian Church in Rudd and the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City. Ardene was a member of Toastmistress of America, Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and an active sup porter of Parents United.

Ardene is survived by her hus band, Harvey Koelder of the Wil lows in Mason City; three daugh ters, Beverly Brandau of Timoni um, Md., Marilyn Tubbesing and her husband, Don, of Mason City, and Karen Trujillo and her hus band, Robert, of Denver, Colo.; one son, James Florian Brandau and his wife, Molly, of Albu querque, N.M.; stepdaughter, Arlys Mogk Meyers and her hus band, Gene, of Mound, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Doug Haag and his wife, Cathy, of Baltimore, Md., Carla Brandau, of San Diego, Calif., Dr. Tom Tubbesing, of Seattle, Wash., Jim Tubbesing, of Mason City, Kathy Lin and her husband, Dr. Paul, of Spokane, Wash., Tammy, Steve, Mike and Terri Trujillo, of Denver, Colo., and Peggie, Maeve and Katie Brandau, of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven great-grandchildren, Greta, Jill, Laura and Carmen Tubbesing, of Seattle, Wash., and Samantha, Kelsey and David Jay Lin, of Spokane, Wash.

Stewart E. Eckhoff was born April 9, 1927, north of Meservey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son.

MASON CITY — Harold J. Roddy, M.D., 86, of St. Joseph, Mo., died Mon day morning (Feb. 2, 1998) at a St. Joseph hospital fol lowing a lengthy ill ness.

Private memorial ser vices will be held at a later date.

Dr. Roddy's body has been donated to the Kansas Universi ty Medical Center for research.

He was a 1938 graduate from the University of Iowa's School of Medicine and completed his resi dency at the University of Iowa. He spent a short period in Stu dent Health at the University of Iowa and at Iowa State College in Ames.

He moved to Mason City with his family in 1942, retiring there in 1988 after 50 years in medi cine.

Dr. Roddy was a member of the American Medical Association, Iowa Medical Society, NARAL, Nature Conservancy and Custer Park Preservation Association.

In 1988, he married the former Gloria J. Owen.

He is survived by his wife, Glo ria; a daughter, Linda Roddy Bernstein, of Honolulu, Hawaii; a son, Michael and his wife, Nancy Roddy, of Bellevue, Wash.; and a granddaughter, Joy Bernstein, of Honolulu, Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Greener Roddy in 1987; his parents, James and Lucinda N. Dunn Roddy; one brother, James Roddy; and seven sisters, Alice B.V.M., Mary Virginia, B.V.M. and Linda, B.V.M. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Garry Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka.

Julia was born June 6, 1910, at Fonda.

Survivors include two sisters, Maxine Stott, of Titonka, and Vivian Valley, of Centerville, Ill.; and one brother, Howard Stott, of Irvine, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters.

MASON CITY — Phyllis E. Bombella, 86, of 320 S. York Ave., died Wednesday (Feb. 4, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

A funeral Mass is tentatively scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

ST. ANSGAR — Alvin Krone man, 87, of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (Feb. 4, 1998) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Cen ter.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Town ship, Mitchell County.

Visitation will begin after noon on Friday at the church.

LAKOTA — Elmer L. Junker meier, 86, of rural Lakota, died Wednesday (Feb. 4, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bethany Evangelical & Reformed Church, Ledyard, with the Rev. Larry Doughan officiating. Bur ial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ledyard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Garry Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka.

Elmer L. Junkermeier was born Dec. 11, 1911, in rural Led yard.

Survivors include his wife, Esther, Titonka Care Center; one son, Lamont Junkermeier, Titon ka; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin of Buffalo Center, and Ervin, of Fairmont, Minn.; three sisters, Esther Kading, of Algo na, Agnes Arend, of Burt, and Delores Owen, of Winnebago, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
