** Dale E. Schroeder

GREENE — Dale E. Schroeder, 75, of 312 N. Fourth St., died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene. The public scripture service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Dale E. Schroeder Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Dale Edward Schroeder was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Greene.

He is survived by his wife, Doreen, of Greene; one daughter, Deb Jacobson, Rochester, Minn.; three sons, Duane Schroeder, Blaine, Minn., Donald Schroeder, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Darrell Schroeder, Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Verna Brott, Benson, Minn., and Rowena Swedlund, Portland, Ore.; and four brothers, Roy Schroeder, Saratoga, Wyo., Robert Schroeder, Washburn, Howard Schroeder, Greene, and Carroll Schroeder, Greene.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

** Clarence J. "Pete" Larsen

DES MOINES — Clarence J. "Pete" Larsen, 68, lifelong resident and businessman of Klemme, died Wednesday (April 22, 1998) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

C.J. "Pete" Larsen was born Jan. 27, 1930, the son of Clarence A. and Rosa M. Larsen.

C.J. graduated from Klemme High School and Iowa State University. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the Korean War, earning a Bronze Star.

C.J. then returned to Klemme as owner-operator of Larsen’s Grocery Store and Meat Market and Larsen’s Stockyards and Cattle Company.

C.J. also served as mayor of Klemme and as a member of the school board.

C.J. is survived by a wife, two daughters, a son, two step-children, a grandson and a sister.

A private family service is being held in the Chicago area. The family asks that any memorial gifts be sent to the National Cancer Foundation in his name.

** Theodore Roosevelt Reysack

CLEAR LAKE – Theodore Roosevelt Reysack, 77, of Clear Lake, died Friday (April 24, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Memorial services will be at a later date with inurnment at Memorial Park Cemetery, U.S. Highway18 West, Mason City.

According to his wishes, his body was cremated.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be directed to the family in care of Elizabeth J. Reysack, P. O. Box 181, Thornton, Iowa 50479.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of the arrangements.

Theodore Roosevelt Reysack was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Butler County, the son of Henry Dirks and Aaltje (Mennen) Reysack. He attended and received his education in the Ardell and Dumont area schools.

He was inducted into the U.S. Navy, serving overseas during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served his country for more than 10 years before receiving his honorable discharge.

He was united in marriage to Darlene Prilipp on Dec. 10, 1954, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton.

Theodore worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and operator for Chamberlain Trailers in Hampton and for Heitland Brothers construction in Hampton for more than 10 years until his retirement in 1975. In 1977, he moved to the Ventura and Clear Lake area, and in 1990, he moved to the Meadows Apartment in Clear Lake. In 1997, he became a resident of the Rockwell Nursing Home.

He enjoyed taking care of his grandson, Tony, fishing and mowing his lawn.

He was a member of the VFW Post in Hampton.

Theodore is survived by his wife, Darlene Reysack, of the Willowcreek Nursing Home, Mason City; one son, Randy D. Reysack, and his wife, Sandra, Thornton; one daughter, Elizabeth J. (Beth) Reysack, Thornton; one grandson, Tony Reysack, Clear Lake; one step-grandson, Benjamin McDonald, Thornton; one step-granddaughter, Lucinda McDonald, Thornton; one brother, Jack Reysack, and his wife, Marilyn, Hampton; three sisters, Bena Truax, Clear lake, Dena Janssen, of the Heritage Care Center in Mason City, and Allene Banner, Boone; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters and an infant son.

** Cletus C. Stangl

MASON CITY — Cletus C. Stangl, 79, of Mason City, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Care Center, St. Ansgar.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Cremation will take place following the services.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cletus Stangl Memorial Fund.

Cletus C. Stangl was born Jan. 6, 1919, at Dedham, the son of J.T. and Mary (Klocke) Stangl.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations from December 1941 to August 1945, including a stint as a personal bodyguard to General Eisenhower.

On Oct. 9, 1945, Cletus married Catherine E. Lechtenberg at Templeton, Iowa.

Cletus attended the police academy in Des Moines in July 1946. His first post in the Iowa State Patrol was in Creston, then he was transferred to Oelwein, where he was promoted to sergeant. Upon his promotion to lieutenant, he was transferred to Mason City. He retired in January 1983.

His favorite sport was baseball and he pitched semi-professionally on a team while living in Creston. Cletus enjoyed football, basketball, fishing and golf. He also won several awards at a Peace Officers Association National Pistol Shooting Contest in Colorado.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City; a member of the Retired Policeman’s Association; the VFW, Post No. 733, Mason City; and the Mason City Country Club.

Cletus is survived by his wife, Catherine "Kay" Stangl, Mason City; two sons, Jeff Stangl, and his wife, Mary, Winona, Minn., and Jerry Stangl, and his wife, Sharon, Winona, Minn.; three grandchildren, Ana, Lucas and Alexis Stangl; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, five sisters and one grandson.

** Nadene Lauer

MASON CITY — Nadene Lauer, 76, of 201 S. Virginia Ave., died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

There will be no visitation. Her body was cremated. Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Nadene Lauer was born Jan. 7, 1922, the daughter of William and Frances (Dunbar) Able. She graduated from Clear Lake High School.

On March 24, 1945, she married Vincent Lauer at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Nadene was employed as a bookkeeper and secretary at the Blackmore Nursery for 30 years.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Vincent Lauer, Mason City; one son, R. Lauer, and his wife, Phyllis, Mason City; two grandsons, Russell and Darrell Lauer, both of Mason City; two sisters, Virginia Baker, Clear Lake, and Evelyn Zeiman, and her husband, Bob, Ocala, Fla.; two brothers, Keith Able, and his wife, Bernice, Escondido, Calif., and Jerry Able, and his wife, Carol, San Jose, Calif.; and two special friends, Bernard and Edythe Nauman, Mason City.

Nadene was preceded in death by her parents, William and Frances Able.

OSAGE — Mary Louise Champion Penney, 73, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) in Wichita Falls, Texas.

RAKE — Amil Haugen, 84, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Care Center, Forest City.

CLEAR LAKE — Lila P. Benner, 83, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 23, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at l p.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. David R. Shogren officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa or Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City.

Lila was born April 7, 1915, in Kanawha, the daughter of Andrew and Alice (Buchanan) Hanson. She was baptized at United Brethren Church in Goodell.

She attended rural school, as well as Twin Lakes, near Kanawha. During her high school years, she attended Clear Lake High School and graduated from Britt High School. She was enrolled in junior college for one year in Britt.

On Oct. 7, 1934, she was united in marriage to Sherril O. Benner at United Brethren Church in Goodell.

Lila was a maid and manager of a Texas motel and assistant manager of a 240-unit apartment complex in Dallas, Texas, until her husband retired in 1969. The couple spent their winters in the South, visiting their three sons. Their summers were spent in Clear Lake, visiting their other three children.

She enjoyed crafts, especially hook rugs and painting figurines. Lila’s family always came first to her and she loved to compile photo books and scrapbooks for her children. She will be remembered as a person who loved to help others.

Lila was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

She is survived by five sons, Donald Benner and his wife, Mary Jo, of Phoenix, Ariz., Jerry Benner and his wife, Arlene, of Grand Prairie, Texas, Stanley Benner and his wife, Betsy, of St. Peter, Minn., Philip Benner and his wife, Mary Ann, of Shreveport, La., and Lavern Benner and his wife, Patsy, of Clear Lake; a step-daughter, Beverley Kephart, and her husband, Raymond, of Washington, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Nadine McCormick, of Spencer, Iowa, and Tess Brenner, of Humboldt, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Burdette Beers, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Sherril in 1995; two brothers, John A. Hanson and Ora A. Hanson; and a grandson, Thomas Anthony Benner.

BRITT — Cordelia Nielsen, 86, died Sunday (April 26, 1998) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. James A. Mattson officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Cordelia Nielsen was born Sept. 12, 1912, at LuVerne.

She is survived by five sons, Jerry Nielsen, Wesley, James Nielsen, Aurora, Ill., Dale Nielsen, Britt, Ronald Nielsen, San Diego, Calif., and Roger Nielsen, Britt; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

REINBECK — John Lee, 54, of Reinbeck, formerly of Manly and Northwood, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at his home.

** Beatrice Carranza

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Beatrice Carranza, 75, formerly of Bancroft, died Friday (April 24, 1998) at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gary-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Brancroft, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Bancroft.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. today followed by a rosary service and, at 7:30 p.m., a parish prayer service. Both services will take place at the funeral home.

Beatrice was born on Sept. 17, 1923, in Faben, Texas.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Coronado and her husband, Juan, of St. Ansgar, and Jova Machin and her husband, John, of Osage; five sons, John Carranza of Tampa, Fla., Tony Carranza and his wife, Barb, of Ottumwa, Victor Carranza,of Rapid City, S.D., Cook Carranza and his wife, Nora, of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Larry Bustamantes, Branson, Mo.; 29 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Carranza; four brothers; three sisters; and one granddaughter, Sandra Bustamantes.

CLEAR LAKE — Edith M. Duregger, 68, died Sunday (April 26, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

** Dale E. Schroeder

GREENE — Dale E. Schroeder, 75, of 312 North Fourth St., died of cancer Saturday (April 25, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with graveside military honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene. A public scripture service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Dale Edward Schroeder was born Aug. 8, 1922, at 401 South Main in Greene, a son of Herman J. And Ella M (Hilmer) Schroeder.

He received his education at the Greene Public Schools and worked at Albelgore's Jewelry and Variety Store. Following his graduation in 1939, he was employed by the First State Bank in Greene as a bookkeeper.

On February 15, 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served with Co. G, 394th Infantry, 99 Division. He took part in the Battle of the Bulge and Eisenborg Ridge where he was injured by artillery fire on December 29, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.

Following his discharge on January 27, 1946, Dale returned to his position at the First State Bank and later was promoted to assistant cashier, cashier, vice president, executive vice president and chief executive officer. Dale retired after 57 years of dedicated service in 1996.

Dale was united in marriage to Doreen Marlys Johnson at the First Presbyterian Church, Greene, August 15, 1948. To this union were born four children and six grandchildren.

Dale was baptized on August 27, 1922, and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, on June 7, 1936. He has been involved in many community activities, including the Greene Public Library Board, Albrecht Board and countless other organizations, serving as treasurer.

His interests included gardening, baseball, playing cards and board games and going on bus tours. He will be remembered as a dedicated and loving father and grandfather and a respected community leader who led by example.

Living family members include his loving wife, Doreen, of Greene; one daughter, Deb Jacobson, and her husband, Dave, of Rochester, Minn.; three sons, Duane Schroeder, of Blaine, Minn., Donald Schroeder and his wife, Denise, of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Darrell Schroeder and his wife, Georgene, of Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Joshua and Katie Schroeder, Justin and Emily Jacobson and Maria Schroeder; two sisters, Verna Brott and her husband, Archie, of Benson, Minn., and Rowena Swedlund and her husband, Glenn, of Portland, Ore.; and four brothers, Roy Schroeder and his wife, Trudee, of Saratoga, Wyo., Robert Schroeder and his wife, Marilyn, of Washburn, Howard Schroeder and his wife, Shirley, of Greene, and Carroll Schroeder and his wife, Lavonne, of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dwight Eugene and Earl William Schroeder.

** Amil Haugen

RAKE — Amil Haugen, 84, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Care Center, Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, with the Rev. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Interment will take place at East Cemetery, Rake.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

Amil O. Haugen was born Feb. 24, 1914, at Otteson, Iowa.

Amil is survived by his wife, Violet, of Rake; two sons, Arlowe Haugen of Northfield, Minn., and Steven Haugen of Fairmont, Minn.; two stepsons, Douglas Jagerson of Petaluma, Calif., and Scott Jagerson of Elmore, Minn.; three daughters, Joan Hamre of Wallingford, Carol Zierke of Elmore, Minn., and Dawn Hanson of Blue Earth, Minn.; a son-in-law, Harold Risius of Buffalo Center; 24 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Inga Engelby, Ida Pingle, Gudron Matheson and Ethel Doty.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepdaughter, two grandsons, a granddaughter, a sister, three brothers and a son-in-law.

** Robert Glen Buck

CLEAR LAKE — Robert Glen Buck, 73, of 213 Sixth Ave. N., Apt. 4, Clear Lake, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at the Veterans Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, with military honors by Clear Lake VFW Post #4868.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday and one hour before services at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Robert G. Buck fund.

Robert was born April 11, 1925 in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, the son of James and Mina (Harter) Buck. He attended school in Clear Lake.

Robert served in the United States Navy during World War II. During his service, he survived the sinking of two ships, The Bonham, which he was aboard during the battle of Midway in the Solomons and The Helena, where he served as seaman first class. The Helena was the first ship to get hit with an aerial torpedo in Pearl Harbor.

After the service he moved back to Clear Lake where he worked for E.L. Secory Plumbing and Heating for over 33 years, retiring in 1979.

Robert liked to travel, help people and be their friend.

He was a member of the Clear Lake Planning and Zoning board since 1991, served on the Cerro Gordo Commission Board for 20 years, was a member of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department for over 31 years retiring in 1978, past district commander of 3rd District, member of Post 4868 Clear Lake VFW and was a member of United Methodist Church.

Robert is survived by his wife, Martha Buck, Clear Lake, Iowa; four sons, Tom Buck and his wife, Judy, Rock Island, Ill.; Ron Buck and his wife, Ardonna, of Bloomington, Minn.; Larry Buck and his wife, Honey, Bloomington, Minn.; Monty Buck and his wife, Stephany, Nampa, Idaho; and one stepdaughter, Judy Boehnke and her husband, Lewis, Adel, Iowa; son-in-law, Lloyd Saville and his wife, Paulette, Ankeny, Iowa; one brother, James Buck and his wife, Carol, Clear Lake, Iowa; and three sisters, Janette Buck, Clear Lake, Iowa; Ruth Coffin and her husband, Clifford, of Eyota, Minn.; and Helen McEldoon, Brighton, Iowa; 12 grand-children, Chad Hanson, Jennifer Buck, Steven Buck, Lindsay Buck, Jason Buck, Joey Buck, Matthew Boehnke, Ryan Boehnke, Kevin Saville, Melissa Smythe, Chad Saville, and Cory Saville; four great-grandchildren, Talia Saville, Abbey Saville, Joshua Smithe and Faith Smithe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two great-grandchildren, Jordan Elizabeth Smithe and Zachary Smithe; and a step-daughter, Joan Saville.

** John Michael Lee

REINBECK — John Michael Lee, 54, of Reinbeck, formerly of Manly and Northwood, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at his home in Reinbeck with his family by his side, following a six-month battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Bents of First Lutheran Church and the Rev. David Olson, of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, in Northwood.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

The family of John Michael Lee has requested memorial contributions be made in his memory. A scholarship fund will be started in his memory.

John Michael Lee was born in Aberdeen, S.D. on July 16, 1943, the son of Sophus W. and Adelyne (Miller) Lee.

John grew up with his family in Mobridge, S.D., Brookings, S.D., Rockford, Minn., and Northwood, Iowa.

John graduated from Northwood High School in 1961. He attended college in California and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1965. He received a Master's of Arts from Mankato State and his Administrative Certificate from Drake University.

He was a speech therapist in Manchester, Iowa until he began as a high school counselor at North Central of Manly in 1971. He became principal at Northwood High School in 1992. In 1996, he became principal at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School.

John was very active in the communities in which he lived. He participated in school, civic, and church activities. Boy Scouts of America, various musical groups lovingly featured as a soloist at numerous weddings and funerals.

John married Marie I. Krogh in 1965 and were blessed with two children, Michael John and Michelle Marie.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, carpentry, music, and playing his guitar, but his great love and enjoyment was his family.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marie Lee, of Reinbeck; his children, Michael Lee, of Omaha, Neb., and Michelle Lee, of Glidden, Iowa; his mother, Adelyne M. Wright, of Cresco, Iowa; his two brothers and their families, Bruce Lee, of Decorah, Iowa and the Rev. Gary Lee and his wife, Geraldine, of Cresco, Iowa; as well as other relatives and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sophus Lee.

** Sylvia May Cornick

NORTHWOOD — Sylvia May Cornick, 99, of Northwood, died Jan. 23, 1998, at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City. Her body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 1998, at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Jensen, officiating. Private inurnment services will be held at the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

The family of Sylvia Cornick has requested that memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church in her memory.

Sylvia May Cornick was born on Nov. 13, 1898, in Lake Mills, the daughter of Walter and Belinda (Gannett) Smith.

She attended and received her education in the Bristol School system. As a young woman, she met Levi Cornick at the roller rink in Northwood. He duly courted her and they were married Christmas Eve, 1916, in her parents home, the brick house at the bottom of Blackmore Hill.

Sylvia lived in Northwood most of her adult life. She was a 69-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a past president of that organization in Northwood. She was a member of the Northwood United Methodist Church and an active circle member.

She loved to play cards and was an ardent competitor even when playing against her young grandchildren. She was an excellent cook. The Cornick home was highly regarded for its hospitality and good food. Family and friends recall many good times playing games, telling stories and reminiscing.

Sylvia Cornick is survived by daughters, Bernice Loan, of Iowa City and Beth McBride of Mason City; by grandchildren, Dennis Loan of Davenport, Dean Loan, of Fife, Wash., Keith Loan, of Port Angeles, Wash., Casey McBride, of Skagway, Alaska, Kathleen McBride, of Flint, Texas, and Christine Brendle, of Mohnton, Pa.; nine great-grand-children; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one infant son, Dean; three brothers, Arthur, William and Clarence; and sisters, Alice Uischner, Margianna Skow, Mildred Hughes, Myrtle Hueser and Neva Hinmon.

Edith was born Feb. 5, 1930 in Latimer, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Felicitas (Lauritzen) Herman. She graduated from Sheffield High School in 1948.

Edith married Leo (Bud) Duregger Sept. 12, 1963, in Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived in the Clear Lake area.

Edith enjoyed playing bingo, camping, traveling, knitting, crocheting, playing the spoons, and dancing to big band music. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and playing pranks on them.

Edith was a member of the Galilean Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, where she was very active.

Merno was born Aug. 9, 1922, the son of Brigdo and Cecilia (Infante) Sanchez in Nuveo Leon, Mexico. When he was a young infant, the family moved to Mason City where he has resided ever since.

He attended the Mason City Public School System and later entered the United States Army on Dec. 29, 1942 through Dec. 13, 1945. While stationed overseas, he participated in D-Day on Omaha Beach.

On Dec. 1, 1951, Merno was united in marriage to Mary Chavez at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Merno was employed at Lehigh Portland Cement Plant for 35 years as an electrician. While working, he was a member of the local union.

His favorite past time was spent writing music and playing it on one of his two guitars. He also loved to listen to Spanish music and play with his dog. His family was the most important thing in his life and never took a back seat to anything or anyone.

Merno was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

** Robert Glen Buck

CLEAR LAKE — Robert Glen Buck, 73, of 213 Sixth Ave. N., Apt. 4, Clear Lake, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at the Veterans Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, with military honors by Clear Lake VFW Post #4868.

Visitation was held Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. There will be further visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and one hour before services at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Robert G. Buck fund.

Robert was born April 11, 1925, in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, the son of James and Mina (Harter) Buck. He attended school in Clear Lake.

Robert served in the United States Navy during World War II. During his service, he survived the sinking of two ships, The Bonham, which he was aboard during the battle of Midway in the Solomons, and The Helena, where he served as seaman first class. The Helena was the first ship to get hit with an aerial torpedo in Pearl Harbor.

After the service he moved back to Clear Lake where he worked for E.L. Secory Plumbing and Heating for more than 33 years, retiring in 1979.

Robert liked to travel, help people and be their friend.

He was a member of the Clear Lake Planning and Zoning board since 1991, served on the Cerro Gordo Commission Board for 20 years, was a member of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department for more than 31 years retiring in 1978, past district commander of 3rd District, member of Post 4868 Clear Lake VFW and was a member of United Methodist Church.

** Harry C. Dolter

MASON CITY — Harry C. Dolter, 95, of 511 N. Jackson Ave., died Sunday (April 26, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Taps will be played with a flagfolding ceremony performed by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Harry C. Dolter was born Dec. 3, 1902, in Duluth, Minn., the son of Charles Jacob and Susan (Moore) Dolter.

Harry worked as a farm hand before he entered the U.S. Navy in 1918, serving 2½ years.

Harry then worked at the I.O.O.F. Home for 15 years as a custodian. He then went to work for the Mason City Public School System for 17 years, also as a custodian.

After retirement, he helped during the summer months painting and filling in as a custodian.

Harry married Luella May Shinn on June 3, 1930, in Mason City.

Harry was a baseball fan and enjoyed gardening.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the I.O.O.F. Lodge for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Luella Dolter, Mason City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Michael Dolter and his wife, Cathie, Albuquerque, N.M.; Jeannette Wilson and her husband, James, Spokane, Wash.; Erich Dolter and his wife, Debbie, Albuquerque, N.M.; three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hannah Wilson and Mandy Rose, one daughter-in-law, Barbara Dolter, Mason City.

** H. Burlette Thompson

FOREST CITY — H. Burlette Thompson, 87, of Forest City, died Monday (April 27, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

H. Burlette Thompson was born on a farm in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, on Oct. 14, 1910, the daughter of Thomas and Romanca (Perry) Kettleson.

She attended rural school near her home. She worked for a time for Dr. Irish in Forest City.

On Jan. 14, 1934, she was married to Olai Thompson at the home of Ruby and Dewey Hanna. The couple farmed west of Forest City until moving to their own farm near Emmons, Minn., in 1944.

Due to Olai's health, the couple sold the farm and bought the Twin Oaks Motel in Forest City in 1960. Olai died in 1968. Burlette sold the motel a year later.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

She enjoyed helping her daughters at J&K Draperies in Forest City.

Her family remembers her as a loving mother and grandmother who loved to cook, bake (she made wonderful caramel rolls) and sew.

Her favorite times were when her family was together. She loved to travel and had recently spent time with her daughters in Las Vegas.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Duane Thompson and his wife, Jan, of Northwood; Janice Williams and her husband, Duane, of Forest City; Kathy Peterson and her husband, Larry, of Joice; Ellen Molskness and her husband, Gerald, of Bricelyn, Minn.; and Karolyn Potter and her husband, Roy, of Little Falls, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and an aunt, Selena Bakken, of Forest City.

Burlette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Olai; a sister, Ruby Hanna; and a son-in-law, Darrel Jensen.

He was born April 18, 1922, in Osage, the son of Frederick and Ida (Hartwig) Havig. He was educated in the Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1939.

Melbourne was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage.

He married Maybelle Lundene on March 18, 1945, in Osage. To this union were born three sons. Maybelle died in 1972.

Melbourne married Hattie (Smith) Shultz on April 13, 1985, in Charles City.

He farmed his entire life northeast of Osage. Melbourne moved to Osage in 1986.

REINBECK — John Michael Lee, 54, of Reinbeck, formerly of Manly and Northwood, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at his home in Reinbeck with his family by his side, following a six month battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. today at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Bents of First Lutheran Church and the Rev. David Olson of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, in Northwood.

Visitation was held Tuesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.

The family of John Michael Lee has requested memorial contributions be made in his memory. A scholarship fund will be started in his memory.

John Michael Lee was born in Aberdeen, S.D. on July 16, 1943, the son of Sophus W. and Adelyne (Miller) Lee.

John grew up with his family in Mobridge, S.D., Brookings, S.D., Rockford, Minn., and Northwood, Iowa.

John graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1961. He attended college in California and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1965. He received a masters of arts degree from Mankato State and his administrative certificate from Drake University.

He was a speech therapist in Manchester, Iowa, until he began as a high school counselor at North Central of Manly in 1971. He became principal at Northwood-Kensett High School in 1992. In 1996 he became principal at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School.

John was very active in the communities in which he lived. He participated in school, civic, and church activities, Boy Scouts of America, various musical groups and was lovingly featured as a soloist at numerous weddings and funerals.

John married Marie I. Krog in 1965 and they were blessed with two children, Michael John and Michelle Marie.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, carpentry, music and playing his guitar, but his great love and enjoyment was his family.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marie Lee, of Reinbeck; his children, Michael Lee, of Omaha, Neb., and Michelle Lee, of Glidden, Iowa; his mother, Adelyne M. Wright, of Cresco, Iowa; his two brothers and their families, Bruce Lee, of Decorah, Iowa and the Rev. Gary Lee and his wife, Geraldine, of Cresco, Iowa; as well as other relatives and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sophus Lee.

** Eugene L. Tracy

MASON CITY — A memorial Mass for Eugene L. Tracy, 87, of 1714 Hillcrest Dr., will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill and Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating.

Eugene L. Tracy died March 6, 1998, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Memorials may be given in memory of Eugene L. Tracy to the Newman High School Foundation.

Merlyn L. Parks

GREENE — Funeral services for Merlyn L. Parks, 76, of 520 N. Fourth St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, at the First Presbyterian Church of Greene with Pastor Galen E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a public Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a public Masonic Service conducted by Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. & A.M., Bristow, Iowa. Visitation will continue on Friday one hour prior to services at the church.

Merlyn L. Parks was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Swanton, Albion Township, Butler County, a son of Leland Leroy and Ethel Mae (Brown) Parks, and died Monday (April 27, 1998) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City from internal injuries sustained as a result of a motor vehicle accident in Greene.

As a child he received his education in the rural schools near his home, until his family moved to Cedar Falls where he attended public schools there. The family later moved to Allison where he attended and graduated from the Allison High School in 1939. As a young man he worked for the Charlie Miller Grocery Store and the Glen Kramer Service Station, both in Allison.

Merlyn was employed by the Butler County Engineers Office for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He took great pride in the work he did and the projects completed throughout the years he worked for the department. After retirement, he enjoyed driving throughout the county checking things out.

On Oct. 17, 1958, he was united in marriage to Imogene Grace Barnhart at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. The marriage was blessed with one son, Brian. Merlyn and Imogene enjoyed and cherished their 40 years together until her death on Jan. 28, 1998.

He was baptized and became a member of the Associated Church in Allison and later became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where he served as a Trustee and was ordained as an Elder of the church. Merlyn and Imogene served as treasurer of the church for many years. He was raised a Master Mason at Opal Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Allison on Nov. 30, 1951, and became a member of Vulcan Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Bristow on Feb. 10, 1977.

Merlyn will be remembered for his frequent daily visits to the coffee shops downtown and for his friendly smile, laughter, and sincere warmth to whomever he came in contact with.

Living family members include his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Cindy Parks, of Hawarden; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Christopher; two sisters, Leota Thompson, of New Hartford, and Barbara and her husband, Neil Wygle, of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and one sister, Marlys McWhirter.

** Lawrence A. Schmoll

CLEAR LAKE — Lawrence A. Schmoll, 84, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (April 26, 1998) at the Keokuk Area Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with Military honors by the Clear Lake VFW Memorial Post.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hur prior to service on Saturday.

Lawrence A. Schmoll was born on April 1, 1914, in Clear Lake, the son of William and Flora (Knack) Schmoll. He attended and received his education in the rural Clear Lake School System. After completing his schooling, he worked on the family farm.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on June 12, 1942, at Fort Des Moines and served in the infantry in the 8th Service Command 1865th unit during World War II until his honorable discharge on Oct. 6, 1942, at Camp Wallace, Texas.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to the family farm where he was born and was a lifetime farmer. He also worked for the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Clear Lake for eight years. After his retirement he continued to live on the family farm.

He enjoyed spending time visiting with his friends.

He was a 52-year member of the American Legion Post and the Am Vets, all in Clear Lake.

Survivors include his niece, Janice (Schmoll) Noneman and her husband, Gary, of Keokuk, Iowa; two nephews, William T. Schmoll and his wife, Joyce, of Evanston, Ill., and John Schmoll and his wife, Margaret, of Bozeman, Mont.; 12 great-nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd and Howard Schmoll; and one great-nephew, Christopher Noneman.

** Margaret E. Reiter

CLEAR LAKE — Margaret E. Reiter, 88, 810 N. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (April 28, 1998) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, Rockwell, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Jana Swenson officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake and one hour before services on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given in memory of Margaret E. Reiter to Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa.

Margaret was born March 25, 1910, in Champion County, Illinois, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Johnson) Ackerman. In 1917, the family moved to Iowa and settled three miles east of Palmer where Margaret grew up on a farm. Margaret was educated in the Palmer Schools.

On Feb. 27, 1929, she was united in marriage with Henry Reiter at her parent's home. After their marriage, the couple lived in several Northwest and North Central Iowa communities where Mr. Reiter was active in the grain elevator business.

In October 1944, the family moved to Clear Lake where Mr. Reiter managed the Clear Lake Grain Co. and Margaret was employed as the bookkeeper for the firm. Margaret was also employed at the Federated Store, Oluf T. Hansen Department Store and the Clear Lake Telephone Co.

Margaret was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving many years on the Altar Guild and the Visitation Committee. She was also active in her Circle in the Church.

She is survived by one son, the Rev. Darwin G. Reiter and his wife, Judy, Clear Lake; two sisters, Emma Reiter and her husband, Donald, of Palmer, Iowa and Evelyn Nielsen and her husband, Dallas, of West Des Moines, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, May Ackerman, West Branch, Iowa, LaVerne Ackerman, Pocahontas, Iowa, and Bernice Ackerman, Coral Gable, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1980, five brothers, two nephews and one great-nephew.

** Carl Edward 'Solly' Solberg

HOLMEN, Wis. — Carl Edward "Solly" Solberg, 91, of Holmen, Wis., found peace with the Lord on Tuesday (April 28, 1998) at the Bethany Riverside Health Care Facility in LaCrosse.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Holmen Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles Evavold and the Rev. Dan Henderson officiating. Burial will be in the Long Coulee Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hearten House III, Holmen, Wis., or the Holmen Lutheran Church.

The Fossum Funeral Home in Onalaska, Wis., is assisting the family with arrangements.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1907, in Casberg Coulee, rural Holmen, the son of Evan E. and Laura (Casberg) Solberg. He graduated from Holmen High School and from Lutheran College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1929.

He married Elizabeth M. Landt on Nov. 26, 1930, in Barrett, Minn.

Carl was school administrator at Herman, Barnesville, Waldorf, and Cannon Falls, all in Minnesota.

He was a long time sales representative and vice president of the Inter-Collegiate Press, while living in Waterloo, Iowa, and later retired in Clear Lake.

He earned an M.A. degree in Education from the University of North Dakota.

He was a member of the Holmen Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for 56 consecutive years. He was active in Rotary, Sons of Norway and the Republican Party.

Carl is survived by his four sons, Edward Landt Solberg of St. Paul, Minn., the Rev. Charles Milton Solberg of Minneapolis, Minn., M. David Solberg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and John Thomas Solberg of Waterloo, Iowa; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Gioco of Tucson, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Tabbert of LaCrosse, Wis. and Wilda Blair of Viroqua, Wis.; and one brother, Robert Solberg of Holmen, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two siblings, Milton and Gretchen Thomas.

** Khalil A. Daoud

ZAHLE, Lebanon — Khalil A. Daoud, 76, of Zahle, Lebanon, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services and burial were on Wednesday, April 15, 1998, in Zahle.

Divine Liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, 1998, at the Greek Orthodox Church of Transfiguration, 1311 Second St. S.W., with memorial prayers of mercy for the repose of the soul of Khalil Daoud, with Father Joseph Mirowski officiating.

Khalil Daoud was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Zahle, Lebanon. He completed a business degree in finance.

He was united in marriage in 1954 to Yvonne M. Lyann.

Khalil was a prominent businessman who owned a financial institution. He was an outstanding community leader and was repeatedly elected to the Zahle Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He originated and was the first president of the local amateur basketball club in the community. He served on numerous boards and committees in the region.

Khalil is remembered as being very honest and ethical and as a man of his word. He always helped those less fortunate than himself. He also took time to share his life and thoughts with the younger generations.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Daoud of Zahle, Lebanon; two sons, George Daoud of Zahle, Lebanon, Fouad and his wife, Angie of Mason City; one daughter, Nada Daoud of Zahle, Lebanon; one sister, Mary Daoud, of Ottawa, Canada; three brothers, George Daoud of Zahle, Lebanon; Fayez Daoud and his wife, Sonia of Zahle, Lebanon; Joseph Daoud and his wife, Nouhad of Sydney, Australia; two grandchildren, Kristina and Khalil Daoud of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

NORTHWOOD — Beulah Saltou, 96, of Northwood, died Tuesday (April 28, 1998) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.
