ST. ANSGAR — Elnora J. Wolford, 86, of St. Ansgar, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

** Alma B. Olson

NORTHWOOD — Alma B. Olson, 91, of Northwood, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood.

** Paul Wirtz

CRYSTAL LAKE — Paul Wirtz, of Crystal Lake, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at his daughter’s home in Iowa City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt.

** Max (Mike) Van Den Hul Jr.

THOMPSON — Max (Mike) Van Den Hul Jr., 55, of Mason City, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City, due to heart complications.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, with Dr. Jennifer Edinger of Rake officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, with military rites performed by members of the Thompson VFW post.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home in Thompson, and one hour prior to the church service Wednesday.

Max Van Den Hul Jr. was born Oct. 27, 1942, at Larchwood to Max Sr. and Nellie (Burgers) Van Den Hul. He attended school at Larchwood and entered the U. S. Army in 1964. He was honorably discharged due to injury in 1966.

He married Sandra Graff on Sept. 24, 1966, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

He was employed at Forester in Forest City and later moved his family to Joice and then to Thompson. During his years in Thompson, he and his wife owned and operated various businesses: Van’s Restaurant, Van’s Service Station, Van’s Camper Repair, Thompson Car Wash and Van’s Catering Service. He served as Thompson city clerk for five years before moving to Mason City in 1993.

He was instrumental in the start up of the Thompson Rescue Unit and served as the first president of the volunteer rescue squad.

He enjoyed fishing and daily visits to East Park in Mason City. His world revolved around his children and grandchildren. His kindness and caring nature touched the hearts of many.

He is survived by his wife, Sandi, of Mason City, and their five children and families, Kim and Scott Norstrud, and Mandra, Joshua and Christopher, all of Thompson; Todd and Tina Van Den Hul, and Keisha, Micheal and Tyler, all of Oelweln; Chad Van Den Hul and Valerie Hagen, and Tawnee, Shania, Gretchen and Logan, all of Forest City; Staci Van Hen Hul of Mason City; and Michele and Loren Hahle Jr., and Coltin, Catalin and Shea, all of Mason City. He also is survived by 10 brothers and sisters, Herman and Phyllis Van Den Hul of Chamberlain, S.D., George and Janet Van Den Hul of Harrisburg, S.D., Tena Markle of Ankeny, Wilma Mulder of Sioux Falls, S.D., Nellie Mullinix of Chatsworth, Marinus and Sharon Van Den Hul of Colorado Springs, Colo., Betty and Bob Morrison of Larchwood, Geraldine and Van Leffler of Mary Esther, Fla., Helen Crawford of Larchwood, and Becky and Tim Breuer of Larchwood; his sister-in-law, Barb Mauer, of Larchwood; his mother-in-law, Florence Graff, of Mason City; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Max was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ralph Van Den Hul; an infant brother, Gerald; and an infant sister, Helene.

** Maurice Smalley

OSAGE — Maurice Smalley, 90, of Osage, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Maurice Smalley was born Oct. 10, 1907, on the family farm in East Lincoln Township, Mitchell County, near Orchard.

Survivors include his wife, Marian, of St. Ansgar; four daughters, Marilyn Fischer, of Fresno, Calif., Suzanne Erickson, of Thief River Falls, Minn., Beverly Hamby, Phoenix, Ariz., and Barbara Victor, of Colby, Kan.; four sons, Darrell Smalley, of Bloomington, Minn., Robert Smalley, of Osage, Ted Smalley, of Gretna, Neb., and Russell Smalley, of Riceville; a sister, Katie Winer, Mankato, Minn.; two brothers, Melborne Smalley, of Orchard, and Merten Smalley, of Clive; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

** Dagmar A. Olk

HAMPTON — Dagmar A. Olk, 84, of Hampton, died Sunday (April 19, 1998) at Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Ackley, with the Rev. Dawn Carder officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Dagmar was born Oct. 16, 1913, at Minden, Neb.

She is survived by two sons, Norman Olk, Clear Lake, and Larry Olk, Austin, Minn.; four daughters, Donna Joens, Waterloo, Delores Meyer, Iowa Falls, Iva Griep, Ackley, and Barbara Long, Ankeny; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 10 brothers and sisters.

** Donna M. Neal

GREENE — Funeral services for Donna M. Neal, 69, of 2985 Indigo Ave., Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with Pastor Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Donna Mae Shultz was born March 13, 1929, in rural Scott Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Galen George and Esther Augusta (Uker) Shultz, and died Sunday (April 19, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City from complications of multiple sclerosis.

She received her education in the Greene Public Schools, graduating in 1946. On Nov. 26, 1946, she was united in marriage to Joseph Raymond Neal at Luther Church of the Incarnate in Columbia, S.C. To this marriage was born three children. They farmed in the rural Greene area their entire marriage. While raising her children, she was a 4-H leader for several years.

For the past 35 years, Donna struggled to overcome many of the obstacles of her illness. Her positive attitude and strength, along with her caring and compassion toward others served as a role model for her children and family members.

Donna’s interests included classic movies, dancing and music, especially big band music. She enjoyed playing games with her family members. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who loved her family very much.

She was baptized on June 6, 1929, and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene on March 26, 1944.

Living family members include her loving husband of 51 years, Joe, of Greene; two daughters, Bonita Neal, of Lancaster, Calif., and Margaret and her husband, George Nash, of Rockford; one son, Tom and his wife, Susan Neal, of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Dan and his wife, Rhonda Neal, Stacy and her husband, Dan Rooney, Matt and Lucas Neal, Aaron and Ryan Nash; four great-grandchildren, Megan, Benjamin and Brooke Neal, and Brendan Rooney; her mother, Esther Shultz, of Greene, two brothers, Galen "Bud" Shultz, of Greene, and Donald Shultz, of Mason City; and one sister, Lois Adams, of Marble Rock.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Donna Mae Neal Memorial Fund in care of the family.

** Betty Lou Rath

CHARLES CITY — Betty Lou Rath, 71, of Flint, Texas, formerly of Charles City, died Friday (April 17, 1998) at East Texas Medical Center, Tyler, Texas, of complications following aneurysm surgery.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert streets, Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag, senior pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.

Betty Lou Rath, the former Betty Lou Springer, was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Charles City, the daughter of Glen Charles and Irene Barbara (Ellis) Springer.

She attended school in Charles City and graduated from Charles City Community High School in 1945.

On Dec. 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to Adolph Malta "Bud" Rath at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, by the Rev. Walter Fritchel. The couple made their home in Charles City.

Mrs. Rath was employed as a secretary by Ahart Printing and Linotype School, Homer Dobbs Coal Company, the Charles City Press, the Bob Thompson Travel Agency and the Oliver Tractor Factory, all of Charles City. For several years, she was a secretary at the Family Credit Union of Charles City from which she retired.

The Raths began to winter in Flint, Texas, and moved there in 1983. They would travel back to Iowa to spend their summers in Lansing, Iowa.

Mrs. Rath was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Tyler. While in Charles City, she was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Betty loved playing bingo, fishing and hunting. She enjoyed bowling in a bowling league while in Charles City.

Living family members include her husband, Adolph "Bud," Tyler, Texas; two daughters, Carolyn Schwickerath, Waynesville, N.C., and Connie Gibbs and her husband, Terry, Tyler, Texas; her mother, Mrs. Irene Springer, New Hampton; a brother and his wife, Glen Charles and Nancy Springer, Cedar Falls; a sister, Mrs. Joan Smith, New Hampton; a daughter-in-law, Susan Rath of Texas; nine grandchildren, Tom Ross, Bud Rath, Tasha King, Tara Farley, Tanya and Shane Schwickerath, Ryan, Tony and Amanda Gibbs; and three great-grandchildren, Christine, Mark and Tanner.

Betty was preceded in death by her father, Glen Charles; a son, David Rath; a sister, Norma Kobliska; and a son-in-law, Charles Schwickerath

** Gloria June Quinn

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Gloria June Quinn, 66, of 202 W. Locust St., died at 10:50 a.m. Sunday (April 19, 1998) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal, Ill.

Private funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Normal, Ill., with the Rev. Daniel Schumann officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington, Ill.

There will be no visitation. Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, 1104 N. Main St., Bloomington, Ill. 61701, is in charge of arrangements.

Gloria June Quinn was born May 6, 1931, in Normal, Ill., the daughter of Ray F. and Violet F. (Woith) Hardwick.

Gloria June Quinn was married to Harry E. Quinn on July 2, 1950.

Mrs. Quinn was a sales clerk at Bergners for many years and later a food demonstrator at various twin city stores.

She was a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Dorcas Circle.

Memorials may be made to the Church Building Fund.

She is survived by her mother, Violet F. Hardwick, of Normal, Ill.; two sons, Mike E. and his wife, Kim Quinn, 1310 W. Empire St., Bloomington, Ill. 61701; and Stanley R. and his wife, Kathy Quinn, of Mason City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Lucas, Bobby, Angel and Joshua Quinn, and Brittany Phillips; and one sister, Kay Curtis and her husband, Bill, of Normal, Ill.

She was preceded in death by one son, Douglas Ray Quinn; one granddaughter, Faith Quinn; and her father, Ray Hardwick.

** Kenneth J. Bruns

THOMPSON — Kenneth J. Bruns, 66, died Sunday (April 19, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church in Kiester, Minn., with the Rev. Elaine Shelby officiating. Burial will take place at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Winter Funeral Home in Thompson, and one hour before the service at the church Thursday.

Kenneth Jerrold Bruns was born Aug. 3, 1931, on a farm north of Woden.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Elsie; two daughters, Renee Frelund, of Mason City, and Sheri Dankert, of Austin, Minn.; one son, Marcus Bruns, of Forest City; three grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bruns, of Cresco, and Elaine Bruns, of Waterloo; two brothers, Harold Bruns, of Mason City, and Merlin Bruns, of Fort Dodge; and two sisters, Mildred Penning, of Kiester, Minn., and Myrna Christoffer, of Fort Dodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

** Elizabeth M. Haxton

BRITT — Elizabeth M. Haxton, 88, of Britt, passed away Saturday (April 18, 1998) at her daughter’s home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Britt.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel with a 7:30 p.m. parish wake service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Elizabeth, the daughter of John and Katherine Kress Appelhons, was born March 25, 1910, in Rothomel, Russia.

On Oct. 7, 1912, she came to America where the family settled near Waverly, Iowa. For a short time, the family lived in Minnesota. Later, they located in Britt.

She was united in marriage with Martin Lichman at St. Patrick’s Church in Britt on Sept. 27, 1927. The couple moved to Chicago where John was born.

Following the death of Martin, she and her son returned to Britt.

She was united in marriage with Henry Merle Haxton on Dec. 10, 1934, at Eagle Grove, Iowa. The couple made their home in Britt.

For the past seven years, Elizabeth had made her home with her daughter, Kathy, in Mason City.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Britt American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to fish, garden and quilt.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathy and her husband, Tom Barlas, of Mason City; a son, John and wife, Wavel Lichman, of Britt; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene and husband, Darrell Francis, of Britt; two brothers, John and wife, Emma Appelhons, of Thompson; Joe and wife, Donna Appelhons, of Britt; sister-in-law, Tena Appelhons, of Crystal Lake; and a brother-in-law, Lewis Fox, of Britt.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin, in 1929; husband, Merle, in 1980; a daughter, Mary Haxton, in 1994; two sisters, Mary Fox and Barbara Jilek; and a brother, Jake Appelhons.

** Rachel Mae Calhoun

MASON CITY — Rachel Mae Calhoun, 78, of 1024 S. 32nd St., Omaha, Neb., formerly of Mason City and Nora Springs, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at Midlands Hospital, Papillion, Neb.

Rachel worked for Simpson Electric in Elgin, Ill., retiring in 1982.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Cathryn J. Boone, Omaha, Neb.; niece, Pamela Collins and her husband, Thomas, of Omaha, Neb.; and one great-nephew, Rick Wrobel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross A. and Meta Boone; and one brother, Richard K. Boone.

** Rachel Mae Calhoun

MASON CITY — Rachel Mae Calhoun, 78, of 1024 S. 32nd St., Omaha, Neb., formerly of Mason City and Nora Springs, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at Midlands Hospital, Papillion, Neb.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Herbert Shafer of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.

CRYSTAL LAKE — Paul H. Wirtz, 75, of Crystal Lake, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at his daughter's home in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church, Britt, with the Rev. Bill Culbertson and the Rev. Ted Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, with graveside military rites conducted by the Crystal Lake Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt.

Paul H. Wirtz was born May 21, 1922, at West Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Wirtz, of Crystal Lake; a daughter, Vicki Ibarra of Iowa City; two grandsons; one brother, Verner Wirtz of West Bend; and two sisters, Lydia Edwards of West Bend, and Adeline Spencer of Hanlontown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, three brothers, and three sisters.

** Phillip V. Carroll

CHARLES CITY — Phillip V. Carroll, 81, died Tuesday (April 21, 1998) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack L. Ivey of the First Congregational Church officiating, and the Rev. Stanley J. Hayek of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church assisting. Burial will be held at 4:45 p.m. at the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where they may greet the family at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to the Charles City Library, the Charles City Art Center or the Anonymous Scholarship at the Charles City High School.

Phillip Vail Carroll was born Nov. 30, 1916, at Waterloo.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Ronnie R. Cooper Sr.

HANLONTOWN — Ronnie R. Cooper Sr., 40, of 201 E. Fourth St., Hanlontown, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown, with the Rev. Linda Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Ronnie's casket will be closed during public visitation.

Ronnie R. Cooper was born Dec. 1, 1957, in Mason City, the son of Emery and Velma (Bartusek) Cooper.

Ronnie grew up in rural Manly and graduated from North Central High School in Manly in 1975.

He married Gloria Foss on May 24, 1980, at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett.

He worked for the Department of Transportation for the last 15 years.

Watching his children grow up and spending all his time with them was his biggest joy.

He also enjoyed farming with Johnnie Julseth and Melvin Rothove.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Cooper; son, Ronnie Jr.; and daughters, Kristin, of Hanlontown, and Bobbi, of Kensett; seven sisters; two brothers; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one nephew.

** Alma Bertha Olson

NORTHWOOD — Alma Bertha Olson, 91, of Northwood, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, in Northwood, with the Rev. Mark F. Bents officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.

The family of Alma Bertha Olson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Lutheran Church Radio Broadcast fund in her memory.

Alma Bertha Olson was born on Dec. 11, 1906, in Mower County, Minn., near Austin, the daughter of Peter and Augusta (Weber) Penning. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the German Lutheran Church in Myrtle, Minn.

She attended and received her education in the Myrtle County School System. After completing her schooling, she helped her family on the family farm. She also was a housekeeper for a family in St. Ansgar.

She was united in marriage to William Olson on Aug. 7, 1926, at the German Lutheran Church in Northwood. He preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1972.

After their marriage, they lived in Northwood where Alma continued to do housekeeping for various families in Northwood.

She enjoyed making quilts and blankets for First Lutheran Church, flowers, and gardening.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Mary's Circle in Northwood.

Survivors include a daughter, Almira Felland and her husband, Roy, of Northwood; three grand-children, James Felland, of Northwood, Dennis Felland, of Nora Springs, and Tom Felland, of Northwood; two brothers, Erhart Penning and his wife, Hazel, of Austin, Minn., and Ervin Penning, of Stacyville; one sister, Elsie Martin of Troy, Mich.; several nieces and nephews; special family, Jacqueline and Howard Erdmann, of Northwood; and James and Virginia Hanson, of Northwood; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Benhart and Arnold Penning; one sister, Martha Wolff; and a special friend, Gunda Weidler.

** Walter C. Richard

AREDALE — Walter C. Richard, 85, of Aredale, died Monday (April 20, 1998) at the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Aredale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kate Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery, rural Dumont.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Walter C. Richard was born Dec. 2, 1912, in Aredale.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Richard of Stewartville, Minn., and Leon Richard of Grandin, Mo.; two brothers, Merlyn Richard of Greene, and Jeane Richard of Aredale; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters.

** John Stein

SWEA CITY — John Stein, 71, of rural Swea City, died Tuesday (April 21, 1998) at his home.

BELLA VISTA, ARK. — David L. Hilsman, 55, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Saturday (April 18, 1998) in a plane crash at Siloam Springs, Ark.

Mr. Carl O. Olsen, a radio/television engineer, was born in State Center, Iowa. He was a member of the Craft Club at Dreamland Villa and a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II.

** Opal M. Clifford

NORA SPRINGS — Opal M. Clifford, 78, of Nora Springs, died Friday (April 17, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

According to Opal's wishes, there will be no services held. Her body was cremated.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Opal M. Clifford was born in Ulster Township on Oct. 4, 1919, to Walter and Amy (Warren) Keifer.

On May 8, 1940, she married Donald "Sam" Clifford in Mason City.

Opal was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Moose Lodge and the Rebekah Lodge #226, where she held the position of Noble Grand, all of Charles City.

Opal and Sam had the Clifford Clothing Shoe and Repair Store for 25 years in Nora Springs.

Opal enjoyed sewing, outdoors, traveling and dancing at the Moose. A special enjoyment of Opal's was to spend time with her grandson, Scott, sharing together wonderful fishing trips to Canada and Washington Island. Opal also enjoyed her time with her two great-grand-daughters.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Wendt, Nora Springs; one grandson, Scott Wendt and his wife, Brenda, Nora Springs; two great-grand-daughters; four great-stepgrand-children; two sisters, Audruy, of California, and Buelah, of Iowa; one brother, Dale, of Iowa; and a very special friend, Robert R. Crooks and his children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren, they all meant so much to her.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, in 1985; and one brother.

** Fay Elwin Bird

BRITT — Fay Elwin Bird, 80, died Thursday (April 23, 1998) at home in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, with the Rev. James A. Mattson, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, with full military rites under the direction of the Britt American Legion and the V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Fay, the son of Harry and Ellen Phillips Bird, was born Dec. 10, 1917, near Woden, Iowa. He attended rural school in Woden Township.

Fay entered the military service, serving during World War II in France and Germany. He was also involved in the Battle of the Bulge. Fay was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart.

After his discharge, Fay worked as a self-employed trucker for a number of years.

He was united in marriage with Velma Dolphin in 1947. The couple made their home in Britt.

Fay was associated with the Hy-Cross Chick Company, until poor health forced him to retire. Some of his favorite pastimes were spent tinkering on trucks, and spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren.

Fay was a member of the American Legion. A couple of years ago, he received the Citation for the Battle of Normandy Award from the French Government at a ceremony in Mason City, Iowa.

Fay is survived by his wife, Velma; his son, Roger and his wife, Yvonne; three grandchildren, Shannon, Amy and Joey; a sister, Murial Brunsen and her husband, Herb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Cliff, Kenny and Leonard; and one sister, Ramona.

CHARLES CITY — Darlyn (Mrs. August) Gerberding, 84, of 300 S. Joslin Street, died Thursday (April 23, 1998) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Gary F. McVay was born Sept. 26, 1943, in Algona, to Francis R. and Betty I. (Richardson) McVay.

He lived in Mason City from 1966 to 1969 and attended North Iowa Area Community College.

He married Anita Musser on Oct. 19, 1967, in Mason City.

He worked for Armour in Mason City. He was an Executive Vice President for Swift & Company.

He traveled and lived in many places with Anita and their son, Brent.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and mountain hiking. He loved his mountain home in Estes Park and enjoyed wildlife and nature.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife, Anita McVay, of Greeley, Colo.; one son, Brent A. McVay, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Rick L. McVay, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two sisters, Judy Thompson and Gloria J. Wandasiewicz, both of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

WODEN — Arlene Rittenhouse, 89, of Woden, died Thursday (April 23, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Woden, with the Rev. Roland Emond Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery south of Woden.

Arlene M. Rittenhouse, the daughter of Ulrich and Mary (Kiesau) Ludeking, was born Aug. 28, 1908, at Woden. She grew up in Woden and attended schools in Crystal Lake and Woden.

She attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, graduating in 1927. Arlene then worked as a secretary at Champlin Oil Company in Mason City.

On March 10, 1928, she was united in marriage to Dale Rittenhouse at United Methodist Church in Northwood.

They lived in Woden all of their married life and were the owners and operators of Rittenhouse Drug for 30 years. Arlene also was a correspondent for the County Newspapers and was a receptionist for the Boughton-Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden for 21 years.

She was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church in Woden where she served as organist for more than 35 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Joan Jensen and her husband, Bob, of Dougherty, and Arlys Spurlin, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Bob Jensen, of Sheffield; Tom Jensen, of Sheffield; Mary Amsbaugh and her husband, Ken, of Sheffield; Scott Spurlin and his wife, Terry, of Austin, Texas; Janet Nielsen and her husband, Bryan, of Tea, S.D.; and Cindy Fullerton, of Mason City; six great-grandchildren, Taylor and Paul Spurlin, of Austin, Texas; Brett and Amanda Nielsen, of Tea, S.D.; Ryan Fullerton, of Mason City; and Sam Amsbaugh, of Sheffield; and one sister-in-law, Connie Ludeking, of Waukon, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, in 1970; two sisters, Estelle Giesking and Gertrude Gerdes; and two brothers, Bernard and Harold Ludeking.
