** Ralph R. Replogle Jr.

CLEAR LAKE — Ralph R. Replogle Jr., 70, of 1200 N. Ninth St. W., died Monday (April 13, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Visita-tion will continue at 8:30 a.m. in the Forum of Opportunity Village until time of services.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Opportunity Village.

Ralph was born Aug. 3, 1927, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Ralph R. and Edith (Swartz) Replogle Sr.

Ralph moved to Clear Lake in 1939 and was educated in Clear Lake Public Schools and boarding schools.

He was the first client at Opportunity Village (then Handicap Village) in Clear Lake in September of 1971 when the facility opened. While at the Village, he served as Pioneer Cottage president and as a member of the Village Council and Village Lake Choir. He also served on the Steering Committee for the Village's Challenge Day. He was awarded a certificate for 25 years of attendance at Camp Sunnyside.

He enjoyed riding his bicycle around Clear Lake each day in addition to going to the theater, eating at KFC and shopping.

He was a very social and loving person who enjoyed spending time with people. He had a very close relationship with his family and friends.

He was a member of First Congregational Church in Clear Lake.

He is survived by his mother, Edith D. Replogle, of Evanston, Ill.; a brother, Dr. Robert Replogle and his wife, Dr. Carol Replogle, of Chicago, Ill.; a nephew, Dr. Robert E. Replogle and his wife, Ann; and their children, Robert Jackson Replogle and Caroline Grace Replogle, of Charlotte, Va.; two nieces, Dr. Jennifer Bremer and her husband, Mark and their son, W. Maxon Bremer, of Boston, Mass., and Edith A. Replogle, of Chicago, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1980.

** Linda Ruth Leiting

MASON CITY — Linda Ruth Leiting, 40, of Mason City, died Sunday (April 12, 1998) at Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today at Holy Spirit Church, Carroll, with the Rev. James McCormick, the Rev. Peter Duc Nguyen, and Monsignor James Lafferty, concelebrating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Arcadia.

Visitation was held on Wednesday at Twit Funeral Home, 503 East First St., Carroll.

Linda Ruth Leiting was born Feb. 15, 1958, in Carroll.

Survivors include her parents, Denis and Marie Leiting, Carroll; two sisters, Lori Rugani, Tacoma, Wash., and LeAnn Kock, Arcadia; one brother, Douglas Leiting, Vail; and one maternal grandmother, Ruth Carpenter, Coon Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, and maternal grandfather.

** Henry A. Tjebkes

ALLISON — Henry A. Tjebkes, 83, of Allison, died Monday (April 13, 1998) at the Waverly Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Reformed Church, Allison, with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Henry A. Tjebkes was born April 17, 1914, in Butler County.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Tjebkes, Allison; one daughter, Zelda Kellum, Waverly; one stepdaughter, Myrna Prange, Des Moines; two stepsons, Duane Wubbena, Dumont, and Darwin Wubbena, Allison; seven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 21 great-grand-children; and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Tjebkes, Waterloo; and one sister, Arlene Pruisnery, Aplington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, one daughter, two brothers, four sisters and one stepgreat-grandchild.

** Laverne S. 'Sandy' Sandvik

MASON CITY — Laverne S. "Sandy" Sandvik, 73, of 1115 N. Carolina Ave., died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

** Rev. Dr. Reuben Tjaden

CHARLES CITY — The Rev. Dr. Reuben Tjaden, 85, of 908 Ninth St., died Thursday (April 16, 1998) at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating.

Burial will be held Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, and one hour prior to services at the church.

The Rev. Dr. Reuben John Tjaden was born March 17, 1913, at Woden.

He is survived by a son, James Tjaden, of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Shirley Hansen, of Long Beach, Calif.; three sisters, Ellien Schutter, of Titonka, Margreete Tjaden, of Garner, and Anna Tjaden, of Charles City; two brothers, the Rev. William Tjaden, of Clarksville, and the Rev. George Tjaden, of Edina, Minn.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and one sister.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

** William M. Wolfe

HAMPTON — William M. Wolfe, 62, of Hampton, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service.

William M. Wolfe was born March 4, 1936, at Boyer.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Wolfe, Hampton; two sons, Steven Wolfe, Kansas City, Kan., and Michael Wolfe, Des Moines; two daughters, Ann Wolfe, West Des Moines, and Amy Wolfe, Hampton; and one sister, Mary Breon, Kiron.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

** Keith Harris

CLARION — Keith Harris, 57, of Clarion, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Clarion, with the Rev. Charles Kellogg officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home in Clarion, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Keith Harris was born May 6, 1940, at Sumner.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, Clarion; four children, Brad Harris, of Des Moines; Stephanie Levy, of Oakland, Calif.; Kim Ott, of Clarion; and Kurt Gaulke, of Rosemont, Minn.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

BANCROFT — Rita Blocker, 56, of Bancroft, died Thursday (April 16, 1998) at her place of business in Bancroft.

** Vera C. Hickey

OSAGE — Memorial services for Vera C. Hickey, 98, of Osage, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Vera C. Hickey died Tuesday (March 3, 1998) in Mason City. Champion Funeral Home in Osage is in charge of arrangements.

** Eldon ‘Scotty’ Scott Sr.

FLOYD — Eldon "Scotty" Scott Sr., 75, of Floyd, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church of Floyd, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday.

Eldon Sidney Scott Sr. was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Floyd County.

Survivors include four sons, Eldon "Skip" Scott Jr., of Lypan, Texas, Robert Scott, of Lone Tree, Jim Scott, of Nichols, and Kirk Scott, of Marion; one daughter, Gail Vosburgh, of Charles City; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Scott, of LaMesa, Calif.; and one sister, Edith Bunn, of Lenox.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and one grandson.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Treatment & Research Center.

** Clara E. Ewy

CLEAR LAKE — Clara E. Ewy, 99, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be private for the family.

Clara E. Ewy was born March 16, 1899, at Kanawha.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Frank, Clear Lake; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one daughter and two grandsons.

** Billie Jean Leehy

CHARLES CITY — Billie Jean Leehy, 70, of 507 S. Main St., died Thursday (April 16, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services today at the Hauser Funeral Home.

Billie Jean Leehy was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Christopher, Ill.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Charles City; one son, Tom Leehy, of Alta Vista; three daughters, Susan Kinowski, of Winfield, W. Va., Donna Lee, of Asheville, N.C., and Karen Leehy, of Bessemer City, N.C.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

** Ethel Blodgett

MASON CITY — Ethel Blodgett, 90, died Thursday (April 16, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center Facility in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at St. Paul Methodist Church in Pleasantville.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.

Ethel Blodgett was born on Aug. 2, 1907, in Missouri.

Survivors include a daughter, Esther Thornburg and family, of Arizona; a son, Dr. Gary Blodgett and family, of Clear Lake; a daughter, Sharon Sinnard and family of Bettendorf; and one sister, Rose Rawson, of Hartford.

** Paul A. Brunsvold

HANLONTOWN — Paul A. Brunsvold, 52, of 204 Fertile St., Hanlontown, died Tuesday (April 14, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown, with the Rev. Linda Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown, with military honors conducted by Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly.

Paul A. Brunsvold was born Sept. 15, 1945, in Mason City, son of Clarence and Ethel Leona (Rye) Brunsvold.

Paul grew up in Hanlontown and graduated from North Central High School in Manly in 1963. He served in the Army Reserve for more than 20 years.

In his early years, Paul worked with his father in the corn shelling and trucking business. He then worked with Tom Quisling as a carpenter. For the past 24 years, he has worked with the Department of Transportation.

Paul was very active in the community being on the Fire Department for more 20 years serving as chief for several years. He also was a former mayor and council member.

Paul organized the first Great Hanlontown Bike Ride, which now is held each June. He loved to meet people and visiting with his friends and neighbors.

Paul had a passion for stained glass. He operated the Village Glass Station in Hanlontown, creating, designing and teaching about stained glass. He enjoyed spending time with his new found family and grandson, Aric.

Paul had a love for his church and was very active at Grace Lutheran Church. He was a board member of the North Iowa Touring Club and served on the Worth County Historical Board.

Survivors include his fiancee, Beth Lawson, Hanlontown, and their family, Bill, and his wife, Kari and their son, Aric; and Kathie and her fiancee, Thomas, all of Mason City; one sister, Mary Johnson, Tuttle, Okla.; two nephews, Frankey and Freddy Johnson, both of Tuttle, Okla.; one aunt, June Ilg, Woodruff, Wis.; one uncle, Claire Rye, and his wife, Viola, Hanlontown; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Margaret Baldner

ST. ANSGAR — Margaret Baldner, 84, of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Toeterville, with the Rev. Dr. David H. Palm officiating. Burial will be held in St. Peter Cemetery.

Margaret Baldner was born Sept. 20, 1913, in Cedar Township in Mitchell County.

Survivors include two daughters, Marlene Aronson, St. George, Utah, and Lola Edens, Toledo, Ohio; two sons, Russell Baldner, of Spillville, and Dennis Becker, of Egan, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son and five brothers.

** Edna Mae Ashland

CLEAR LAKE — Edna Mae Ashland, 88, of 625 14th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Galilean Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Peter Narum officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

The family suggests memorials may be given in memory of Edna Mae Ashland to Galilean Lutheran Church, or Hospice of North Iowa.

Edna was born April 29, 1909, in Brookings, S.D., the daughter of Charles O. and Julian (Strom) Thompson. She moved with her parents to Hadley, Minn., where she grew up on a farm. After her father’s retirement, the family moved to Clear Lake, Iowa. As a young girl, she worked at the Paulson Grocery Store in Clear Lake.

On March 6, 1929, she was united in marriage with Carl Ashland at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa. The couple farmed until the 1950s.

They built the Lakeview Motel in Clear Lake and operated the business for nine years. They then built a home east of Clear Lake, near the truck stop. Edna cooked at the truck stop, later known as the Milepost 194 Truck Stop, for 20 years. When Interstate 35 was built, they moved their house north of Clear Lake. Edna lived there until moving to The Meadows in Clear Lake.

She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, flowers and her dog, Chonie. She was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church and the W.L.A.M. Club.

She is survived by three children, Kenneth Ashland and his wife, Doris, of Spirit Lake; Lloyd Ashland and his wife, Diane, of Clear Lake; and Kathryn Swanson and her husband, Larry, of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren, Wendy Choat and her husband, Larry, Jeff Ashland and his wife, Peggy, Peggy Adam and her husband, Ken, Amy McCourt and her husband, John, Donn Ashland, Ann Bull and her husband, David, Linda Finer and her husband, Jeff, David Swanson and his wife, Sandi, Kris McDermott and her husband, Tom, Jim Swanson and his wife, Brenda, and Lee Swanson; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1988; one daughter, Linda, in 1963; one sister and three brothers.

** Vera M. Haack

NEW HAMPTON — Vera M. Haack, 92, of New Hampton, died Thursday morning (April 16, 1998) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, with the Rev. Daniel Vojta officiating. Burial will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home in New Hampton, with the family present until 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Vera was born Feb. 26, 1906, in Stillwater, Okla., the daughter of John and Maude (Warner) Lieninger. At an early age, she moved from Oklahoma to Iowa where she attended Lottscreek Parochial School near Algona.

She married Fred Haack at the Lottscreek Lutheran Church. They lived on a farm near Lonerock, Iowa, then moved to a farm near Wesley, Iowa, where they lived for nearly 10 years. In 1953, they moved to New Hampton and farmed south of town until Fred died in 1960.

She worked as a nurse for St. Joseph’s Community Hospital and privately for people in New Hampton and Charles City.

She enjoyed her flower garden and loved to fish. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ewald, and his wife, Arselene, of Klemme, Iowa, and Eugene, of Colfax, Iowa; one daughter, Lucille Broderson, of Ely, Nev.; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred, in Feburary 1960; and two sons, Edward, and Elmer, an infant

** Richard J. Johnson

ROCKWELL — Richard J. Johnson, 77, of 12645 190th St., died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. South, Rockwell.

** Laverne S. ‘Sandy’ Sandvik

MASON CITY — Laverne S. "Sandy" Sandvik, 73, of 1115 N. Carolina Ave., died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Arne Bergland officiating. There will be a flag folding presentation by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association at the church.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Laverne S. Sandvik Memorial Fund.

Laverne was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Plymouth, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Ruth (Motland) Sandvik. He graduated from Mason City High School, then attended Mason City Junior College where he played football.

Laverne served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Copahe.

He married June Elizabeth Quevli on March 11, 1951, in Mason City.

Laverne was employed by Carnation Milk Company and Swiss Valley Dairy for more than 28 years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Post 733 and Teamsters Local 828.

Laverne was an avid golfer, enjoyed camping, canoeing and fishing with his family. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending winters in Texas.

Survivors include his wife, June Sandvik, of Mason City; son, Steve Sandvik, and his wife, Janet, of Denver, Colo.; son, Mark Sandvik, and his wife, Sherry, of Thompson; daughter, Teddi Klein, of Mason City; daughter, Jennifer Hutchens, and her husband, John, of St. Ansgar; grandchildren, Jason Sandvik, of Denver, Colo., Brandon Harder, of Nebraska; Keila and Andy Buffington, of Forest City; and Jacob and Samantha Klein, of Mason City; one great-grandchild, Madeline Buffington, of Forest City; special nieces and nephew, Karen Wilson, of Mason City; Jill Query, of Mason City; Kathryn Kruse, of Cedar Rapids; and Matthew Query, of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Opal, Gloria and Beverly.

** John C. Proctor

DES MOINES — John C. Proctor, 77, of 4325 N.E. 29th St., Des Moines, formerly of Ventura, died Thursday (April 16, 1998) at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at WardVan Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Fred Lewis of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel and again one hour prior to services on Monday.

John Charles Proctor was born March 1, 1921 at Clear Lake, the son of John W. and Allie (Steenhard) Proctor.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Normandy, France during the war.

On Oct. 22, 1949, he married Lora Klaassen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

John loved to fish and especially enjoyed spending time with his kids and his grandkids. He liked to kid and joke with people, and he genuinely loved life.

He was a member of the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lora Proctor, Des Moines; four children, Jean Wilson and her husband, Frank, of Des Moines; Julie Reins and her husband, Carroll, Carlisle; Lora Jean Moore and her husband, Charles, Boone; and John Proctor Jr. and his wife, Shelly, Perry; eight grandchildren, Susan, Bill and John Wilson, all of Des Moines, Lora Reins, Carlisle; Joshua and Jason Moore, both of Boone; Ryan and Amber Proctor, both of Perry; two sisters, Wilma Young and Ann Ward, both of Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Clara Brown and Betty Hall; five brothers, George, Tom, Harold, Vern and Allan Proctor.

** June E. Nelson

KLEMME — June E. Nelson, 72, of Klemme, died Friday (April 17, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 20, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner, with Father John W. Hemann, officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, with a 7 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

June Elizabeth Nelson, the daughter of John and Karen (Lynd) Rapp was born June 1, 1925 on a farm near Hutchins. She attended school at Britt and in 1940, moved with her family to Garner. She worked at Hull's Cafe for several years.

She married Don Reinig and to this union, eight children were born. They lived in Des Moines and Garner.

On July 23, 1974, she was married to Alvin Nelson in Tempe, Ariz. They made their home in Tempe until retirement in 1980, when they moved to Des Moines and in 1993 to Klemme.

June was a homemaker and a day care provider. She died Friday, April 17, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a short illness.

June thoroughly loved her husband, children and family, which she centered her life around.

She enjoyed growing tomatoes for her brother, Raymond "Raymer" and traveling including annual Navy reunions and visiting casinos throughout the country.

She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Catholic faith.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin of Klemme; her children, Larry Reinig and his wife, Triza, of Des Moines, Linda Wastier and husband, Rollo, of Mason City, Patty Schmidt and husband, Dick, of Des Moines, Cathy Schroeder and husband, Steve, of Des Moines, Cindy Henderson, of Des Moines, Paula Johnson and her husband, Duane, of Clive; stepchildren, David Nelson and his wife, Laurie, of Bellville, Ill., Michael Nelson and wife, Delores, of Fertile, Kathy Wessels and husband, Bob, of Belmond, and Bill Nelson, of Spencer; 40 grandchildren; 39 greatgrandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Hernon and husband, Jack, of Clear Lake, Alice Rayhons, and husband, Leonard, of Garner, Shirley Netland, of Garner and Bonnie Ruppert and husband, Bud, of Northwood; two brothers, Raymond Rapp and his wife, Dorothy, of Forest City, and Jack Rapp and his wife, Roz, of Caney, Kan.; sistersinlaw, Esther Rapp, of Garner, Pauline Rapp, of Renwick, and Cynthia Rapp, of Bronson, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Earl E. Thompson, 78, of 423 Ninth St. N.W., Mason City, died Monday (April 13, 1998) at Weslaco, Texas, of cardiac arrest.

Earl E. Thompson was born Dec. 5, 1919, in LuVerne, Iowa, to William and Mabel (Blanshan) Thompson.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Thompson returned to Iowa and was a farmer and auto mechanic.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, D. Mavis Thompson, Mason City; two daughters, Jeanette Farrow and her husband, Roger, of Osage Beach, Mo., and Jennifer Andersen and her husband, David, of Abilene, Texas; grandchildren, Alyssa, Katie, Collin and Brian Farrow, and Kristian and Elyse Andersen; three sisters, Eunice Parsons, of Waterloo, Wis., Florence Burgardt, of Rochester, Minn., and Betty Wolfe, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.

** Wallace 'Wally' Coleman

WILLOW, Alaska — Longtime Alaska resident, Wallace Lee Coleman, 74, of Willow, died April 5, 1998, at Providence Alaska Medial Center in Anchorage.

A celebration of his life will be held later this summer at the Coleman homestead. His ashes will be scattered on his homestead.

Mr. Coleman was born on Jan. 30, 1924, in Arkansas City, Kan. He attended school in Newkirk, Okla.

Wally enjoyed his love of nature at an early age by raising champion hogs, and won many trophies. He also attained Eagle Scout honors. He was president of his senior class of 1942, graduated from Iowa State College with a bachelor of science degree in animal science, and served in the U.S. Navy.

Wally met JoAnn Little, who became his loving wife, while attending Iowa State College in Ames.

He had been a resident of Alaska since 1959, living in Anchorage from 1959 to 1964; and in Willow from 1965 until time of death.

His family stated: "Wally was a businessman and entrepreneur." He started and operated several businesses, including grain elevator businesses in Manly, Northwood and Kensett, Iowa. He started in Kensett with one small elevator, expanding to 14 silos in Northwood. In Manly, he bought the roundhouse depot where he stored oat hulls, grinding them for a mill in Minneapolis.

He operated businesses in Anchorage (Alaska Builders Cache), farmed in Hawaii, running cattle in Oregon and always returned to his homestead in Alaska.

He was very active until the time of his death, and was most content working on projects at his homestead and visiting with family and friends. He was an inveterate traveler, having traveled around the world many times.

Wally was a generous benefactor who never forgot his roots. He presented two Remington bronze statues which stand in Newkirk, Okla. He also helped finance the marble base for the centennial statue, "Land of Hope" in Newkirk. A very recent goal was to help acquire a swimming pool for the Willow Talkeetna area.

Wally was a creative and innovative businessman. He was always full of new ideas, challenges, and projects to accomplish.

He is survived by his sons and daughtersinlaw, Carson and Susan of McMinneville, Ore.; Kit Coleman and Heidi Hurliman, of Anchorage, Alaska; and Scott and Lori, of Fields, Ore.; and his grandchildren, Alex, Henry, Megan, Emma, Katie, Brett, and Charles Coleman. Also surviving are his longtime companion, Evelyn Krantz and brothers, Robert of Lacey, Wash.; and Raymond, of Davis, Calif.

Wally was preceded in death by his beloved wife, JoAnn; son, Brett Coleman; parents, Elmo Coleman and Susie Frick Goodrich; and brother, Don Coleman.

Emily F. Hoye was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Slayton, Minn., and graduated from Mason City High School in 1945.

Paul and Emily celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 3, 1998.

Survivors include her husband, Paul, Apache Junction, Ariz.; three daughters, Yvonne Steward, of Ventura; Mary and her husband, Kim Krominga, of Mason City; and Judy and her husband, Hal Hobbiebrunken, of Sheffield; one son, Montie and his wife, Jeannie Hoye, of Coralville; grandchildren, Chris, Renee and Chad Steward, Bret, Ryan and Amy Hobbiebrunken, Kacie and Breana Krominga and Sean and Tanya Rummelhart; and two greatgrandchildren, Cambry Emily Rattay and Joseph Paul Garcia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Emma Kelly; five brothers, Raymond, Lester, Robert, Marcus and Bernard Kelly; and one son, Paul Hoye Jr.

Emily will be remembered most for her deep love of God, family and friends. Her gentle spirit and sense of humor will be sadly missed by all.

Visitation was held Friday and will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. today at the WardVan Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour before services today at the church.

The family suggests memorials may be given in memory of Edna Mae Ashland to Galilean Lutheran Church, or Hospice of North Iowa.

Edna was born April 29, 1909 in Brookings, S.D., the daughter of Charles O. and Julian (Strom) Thompson. She moved with her parents to Hadley, Minn. where she grew up on a farm. After her father's retirement, the family moved to Clear Lake, Iowa. As a young girl, she worked at the Paulson Grocery Store in Clear Lake.

On March 6, 1929, she was united in marriage with Carl Ashland at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa. The couple farmed until the 1950s.

They built the Lakeview Motel in Clear Lake and operated the business nine years. They then built a home east of Clear Lake, near the truck stop. Edna cooked at the truck stop, later known as the Milepost 194 Truck Stop for 20 years. When Interstate 35 was built, they moved their house north of Clear Lake, Edna resided there until moving to The Meadows in Clear Lake.

She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, flowers, and her dog, Chonie. She was a member of the Galilean Lutheran Church, and the W.L.A.M. Club.

She is survived by three children, Kenneth Ashland and his wife, Doris, of Spirit Lake; Lloyd Ashland and his wife, Diane, of Clear Lake; and Kathryn Swanson and her husband, Larry, of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren, Wendy Choat and her husband, Larry, Jeff Ashland and his wife, Penny, Peggy Adam and her husband, Ken, Amy McCourt and her husband, John, Donn Ashland, Ann Bull and her husband, David, Linda Finer and her husband, Jeff, David Swanson and his wife, Sandi, Kris McDermott and her husband Tom, Jim Swanson and his wife, Brenda, and Lee Swanson; and 20 greatgrandchildren.

Richard was born on March 11, 1921, in Pocahontas, the son of Herman and Agnes Johnson. His early education was in Gilmore City, and in 1940 he graduated from Swaledale High School.

He served his country with the Air Corps, joining in 1945. He served overseas in the Philippines and Guam and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.

Rich was united in marriage to Dorothy Benn on Feb. 21, 1945, in the chapel of Mercy Hospital shortly before his entry into the service. Following his discharge, he farmed in the Swaledale area, and in 1980, moved to a farm near Rockwell. While working on the farm with the help of his wife and family he also worked as a carpenter for Polsdofer Construction for 13 years, then for the Burchinal Elevator for seven years and then for 13 years with the Emery and Consolidated Freight Ways as a courier, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Swaledale Area Men's Club, Gallagher Post of the American Legion and for many years served as a trustee of Mount Vernon Township. He loved to play "500" and other card games, hunt pheasants, fish in Minnesota and his horses.

Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy; his daughter, Mary Margaret, and her husband, James M. Netzel, of Charlotte, N.C.; his son, James R. Johnson of Mason City; two sisters, Annabelle Patterson and June and her husband, Jack Dorsey, and one brother, Arthur and his wife, Colleen, all of Mason City; and one special granddaughter, Emily Benn Netzel, of Charlotte, N.C.

Rich was proceeded in death by his parents and one brother, Harlan Henry Johnson.

Doris was born Feb. 17, 1919, in Compton, Ill., the daughter of William and Blanche Myrtle. When Doris was 5 years old she came to live with her uncle and aunt, Elmer and Bertha Black. She married William Clark in La Porte City. They lived in Marshalltown. William died in 1993.

She is survived by a niece, Kathryn Lovik of Mitchell; and two nephews, George Black of Mason City and Claude Black of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Clark; and a daughter, Judy Wireman.

Benjamin Schriever was born May 13, 1912, in Bristow, Butler County, a son of Tybo and Gertie (Heyes) Schriever, and died Friday (April 17, 1998) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

He received his education in the rural schools near Bristow, and as a young man moved to Rockford, where he was united in marriage to Genevieve Kornegor on Dec. 24, 1935. He farmed with his brother Fred for many years, and tiled for several years. He later returned to farming, until his health began to fail. In 1980, Ben and Genevieve moved into Marble Rock, where he remained until entering the Nora Springs Care Center in January 1998.

Ben was baptized a member of the United Methodist Church, and was a member of Sirus Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Rockford. As a pastime he enjoyed gardening and being with his grandchildren.

BELMOND — Mildred D. "Millie" Smit, 76, passed away Saturday (April 18, 1998) at the Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Reformed Church with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Millie, the daughter of Charles and Anna Thompson Anderson, was born Sept. 5, 1921, near Clarion. She attended country schools in the area. She was united in marriage on Oct. 5, 1939, with Dick Carl Smit. The couple made their home near Belmond.

Millie helped raise her brothers and sisters after her mother's death. She worked for a time at the Belmond Drive-In. After the death of her husband in 1982, Millie moved into Belmond. She loved to spend her time with her grandchildren. They were very important to her. Millie also enjoyed doing needlepoint and quilting, making a quilt for each grandchild. She enjoyed cooking and baking for others, always taking a pie when she got her hair done. Millie was a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church and the Kensington Club.

Millie is survived by her daughter, Jan Stadtlander and her husband, Ed, of Meservey; a daughter-in-law, Pam Smit of Belmond; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Julia Swenson of Belmond, Gladys Spainhower of Clarion, Betty Delger and her husband, Hank, of Clarion, Helen Busick of Clarion, Ruth Lamfers and her husband, Harold, of Salina, Kan., and Arlene Smith and her husband, Brad, of St. Cloud, Minn.; and two brothers, Norville Anderson and his wife, Millie, of Clarion, and Roger Anderson and his wife, Sharon, of Independence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and three brothers.

WAPELLO — Dennis Henry Lolling, 58, died Sunday (April 19, 1998) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with the Rev. Mary N. Pugh officiating. Burial will follow at the Parsons Cemetery with prayer and music by the Oakville Apostolic Christian Church.

Dennis Henry Lolling was born Feb. 10, 1940, at Britt, the son of Jake and Bessie Louise Fox Lolling. He married Loretta Joyce "Teddy" Lundgren on Aug. 16, 1963, at Britt.

Dennis graduated from Britt High School in 1958, and attended the University of Iowa Tec School and received his training as a linotype operator. After several years as a linotype operator, he went into delivery sales for Harker’s Wholesale Meats. In recent years, he was currently a truck driver for Oakville Feed and Grain at Oakville.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church at Wapello. Dennis always enjoyed his work, and then the activities around home and his yard.

Survivors include his wife, "Teddy"; three daughters, Jody Winslow, of Wapello, Kristine Lanz, of Oakville, and Rhonda McGuire, of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Chad, of Wapello; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Lanny Lolling, of Burnsville, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

BRITT — Liz Haxton, 88, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at her daughter’s home in Mason City.

GLENVILLE, Minn. — Mrs. Ilah D. Hillman, 75, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Alf Merseth officiating. Interment will be in North Shell Rock Cemetery in Northwood.

Ilah was born July 26, 1922, in Northwood, the daughter of Gay and Valborg (Odden) Lum. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1940.

Ilah married Klinerd Christianson on Dec. 21, 1940, and they farmed in the Northwood area. She later married Dale Hillman on May 16, 1963. They lived in Glenville, Minn.

Ilah enjoyed reading, playing cards, flowers and especially her children and grandchildren. She was a member of First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Ilah is survived by six children, Gary Christianson and his wife, Maryanne, of Northwood, Leonard Christianson, of Northwood, Howard Christianson, of Sunnyvale, Calif., Claire Christianson and his wife, Mary, of Northwood, Cheryl Henriksen and her husband, Scott, of Glenville, and Cathy Kingstrom of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandmother of 13; great-grandmother of eight; and sister Harriet Mork, of Dresser, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother-in-law, Lloyd Mork, and one daughter-in-law, Donna Christianson.

** John C. Proctor

DES MOINES — John C. Proctor, 77, of 4325 N.E. 29th St., Des Moines, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 16, 1998) at Mercy Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Fred Lewis, of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Clear Lake VFW.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church today.

John Charles Proctor was born March 1, 1921, at Clear Lake, the son of John W. and Allie (Steenhard) Proctor.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Normandy, France, during the war.

On Oct. 22, 1949, he married Lora Klaassen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

John loved to fish and especially enjoyed spending time with his children and his grandchildren. He liked to kid and joke with people, and he genuinely loved life.

He was a member of the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lora Proctor, Des Moines; four children, Joan Wilson and her husband, Frank, of Des Moines; Julie Reins and her husband, Carroll, Carlisle; Lora Jean Moore and her husband, Charles, Boone; and John Proctor Jr. and his wife, Shelly, Perry; eight grandchildren, Susan, Bill and John Wilson, all of Des Moines, Lora Reins, Carlisle; Joshua and Jason Moore, both of Boone; Ryan and Amber Proctor, both of Perry; two sisters, Wilma Young and Ann Ward, both of Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Clara Brown and Betty Hall; five brothers, George, Tom, Harold, Vern and Allan Proctor.

John was born March 21, 1921, in Christian County near Taylorville, Ill., to John Thomas and Bertha (Minnis) Nagle. He grew up and attended school in the Raymond, Farmersville and Litchfield areas. He married Doris Virginia Whitlow on Nov. 6, 1941, in Litchfield, Ill. John worked at various jobs in Illinois, including farm hand, factory worker and welding for many years. He was shop foreman for an International Harvester dealer in Raymond, Ill. He played with a country western band on a local radio station. John and Doris moved to Joice in 1958, and started farming. They moved to the Northwood area in 1965, farming, custom hauling and custom farming. In 1970, he started his own band known as Johnny and The Rhythm Ranch Boys. He played in various halls in North Iowa and southern Minnesota. He discontinued the band in 1983, and continued farming with his son, Dennis.

John was a member of the Northwood Country Club for 23 years. Besides his love for his family, he loved to golf. He made lots of friends and enjoyed them very much.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; his children, Linda Klidies and her husband, Jerry, Green Cove Springs, Fla., Marilyn West and her husband, Terry, Millington, Tenn., Theresa Berg and her husband, Kendrick, Osage, John W. LELAND — Henry P. "Bucks" Holland, 87, died Saturday (April 18, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christianson officiating. Fullerton Funeral Home, Mason City, is in charge of local arrangements.

Henry was born on Aug. 21, 1910, at Leland, the son of John Albert and Maria (Hanson) Holland. He graduated from Leland High School and worked at the market in town. Later, he was a tool and die inspector for 25 years at the Twin Disc Company in Rockford, Ill. On June 27, 1942, Henry was united in marriage to Leona Withers at Palmyra, Mo. To this marriage were born two children.

Henry was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, wrote poetry, loved to fish at San Diego, Calif., working with tools and wood doing carpentry work and wood projects. He also was known for spending a lot of time reading his Bible.

Henry is survived by his daughter, Diane L. Holland, and one grandson, Nathan Holland, both of Chicago; and his brother, Leonard Holland and his wife, Frances, of Leland.

Henry was proceeded in death by his wife on Dec. 19, 1986; his son, Gary Holland on June 11, 1985; three sisters Grace Anderson, Alma Ambrosen and Bess Hanson; and two brothers, Raymond and Wallace; and his parents.

Connie graduated from Manly High School in 1933. After the death of her husband in 1994, she moved to Florida to be near her son. Connie enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing solitaire and reading. She liked birds and flowers. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Allen W. Leslie Jr. and his wife, Sharon, LaBelle, Fla.; two grandchildren, Melanie Engebretson and her husband, David, Thornton, and Mindy Arndt and her husband, Tom, Manly; three step-grandchildren, Dawn Barber and her husband, Dennis, Fond Du Lac, Wis., Denise Miller and her husband, Scott, Mason City, and Justin Lugar, Garner; three sisters, Darlene Kuchar, Mason City, Remelda Gelner, Rudd, and Mae Hansen, Mason City; five great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Grace Narveson, Manly.

David A. Hrubetz was born Aug. 28, 1940, in Kensett, the son of Charles and Lucile (Knudtson) Hrubetz. He married Phyllis Gaskill on July 28, 1962, in Mason City.

David grew up in Worth County and attended school in Northwood and graduated from Joice High School in 1959. He then attended Mason City Junior College.

He sold insurance for Lutheran Brotherhood for 10 years until 1972. David has worked as a security guard at Winnebago and his family operated drive-ins in Northwood and Manly for 20 years. David loved to spend time with family and taking vacations. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Hrubetz, Mason City; two children, Mark and Kristene Hrubetz, both students at Iowa State University, Ames; one sister, Kathy Gallaher and her husband, Dave, Joice; three brothers, Richard Hrubetz and his wife, Mary, Joice, Loren Hrubetz and his wife, Jean, Lake Mills, and Ron Hrubetz and his wife, Rhonda, Joice; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
