110 29th St. S.W., Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 1997)

at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Edna Slagle

GARNER 



Edna Slagle, 86, of Garner, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 1997) at

the Concord Care Center, Garner.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United

Methodist Church, Garner, with the Rev. Robert Ellis officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, Garner.



Edna Lucille Slagle was born July 28, 1910, at McCallsburg.



Survivors include her husband, Harold F. Slagle of Garner; a

son, Dale Slagle of Garner; four daughters, Norma Barkhaus of

Pomeroy, Jean Wilson of Clear Lake, Nadine Weaver of Clear Lake,

and Nancy Johnson of Panora; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren;

a brother, James Womack of Riceville; three sisters, Gladys Grube

of Charles City, Opal Polen of Montezuma, and Hazel Kapka of

Thompson.



She was preceded in death by her two grandchildren, her parents

and eight brothers and sisters.

William J. Groth

ST. ANSGAR 



William J. Groth, 75, formerly of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday

(Jan. 8, 1997) at the Clarinda Treatment Complex, Clarinda.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First

Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating.

Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 12 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran

Church.



Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of

arrangements.



William J. Groth was born Nov. 15, 1921, in St. Ansgar, the

son of William and Irene (Dahl) Groth.



He attended school in St. Ansgar and graduated from high school

in 1939.



He is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one

brother.

Katherine Pals

MESERVEY  



Katherine Pals, 88, of Meservey, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 1997)

at the Belmond Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Salem

United Methodist Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer

officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup

Funeral Home, Meservey.



Katherine ``Katie'' Pals, daughter of Chris and Marie (Becker)

Yakel, was born on Feb. 6, 1908, in a German settlement in Balzar,

Russia.



She came to the United States as a small child and later became

a citizen of the United States.



She graduated from Alexander High School in 1926 and went on

to attend Coe College before teaching country school.



She was united in marriage on Dec. 25, 1938, to Jacob E. Pals.



They operated a produce business in Meservey until they retired.



Katie enjoyed walking, playing cards and doing crochet work.



She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church where

she taught Sunday School for many years, the Mary Circle, Federated

Womens Club, and the Senior Citizens.



She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Schmidt of Alexander,

and Phyllis Ruiter and her husband, Merlin, of Meservey; four

grandchildren, Linda Sheriff and her husband, Keith, of West

Des Moines, Michael Schmidt of Iowa Falls, Roxanne Ronsen and

her husband, Kurt, of West Minster, Colo., Ritch Ruiter of Meservey;

four great-grandchildren, Philip, Brian, Erin and Steven Sheriff

of West Des Moines; and one sister, Marie Jessen of Hampton.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob in September

of 1984; two infant children; her parents; one sister, six brothers;

and a son-in-law.

Clifford Van Ry

ST. CHARLES, Mo. 



Clifford Van Ry, 66, 1742 Doris Walters Lane, St. Charles,

Mo., died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 1997) at the Barnes Jewish St. Peters

Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Major

Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City,

with the Rev. Greg Lugn of the Nora Springs Christian Church,

officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Albert Lea,

Minn.



Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services

on Saturday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home.



Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association of St.

Louis, Mo., 9374 Olive Blvd, St. Louis, Mo. 63132-3214.



Clifford Van Ry was born March 11, 1930, in Albert Lea, Minn.,

the son of Marinus and Pauline (Davignon) Van Ry.



Clifford attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason

City High School.



He served during the Korean War from 1951-53.



Clifford then married Patricia Riley on June 11, 1955, in Mason

City.



He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant in

1957.



Clifford was an accountant for Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment

for many years. In 1994, they settled in St. Charles, Mo.



Survivors include his wife, Patricia Van Ry, of St. Charles,

Mo.; daughter, Victoria Malinee and her husband, Matthew, of

St. Charles, Mo.; son, Michael Van Ry and his wife, Cathy, of

Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren, Sean Malinee, Nikki and

Kirsti Van Ry; and one brother, Charles Van Ry, of Arnold, Md.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul.

Avis M. Ludeman

MASON CITY  



Avis M. Ludeman, 94, 23 S. Virginia Ave., died Tuesday (Jan.

7, 1997) at the Willow Creek Health Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Major

Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev.

Merlin Ackerson of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at Major

Erickson Funeral Home.



Memorials may be given to the Kinney Pioneer Museum in her memory.



Avis was born Sept. 30, 1902, in Bath Township, Cerro Gordo

County, the daughter of James and Ara (Wass) Pedelty.



She graduated from Mason City High School and was a life-long

resident of the area.



She married George R. Ludeman on May 5, 1923, at her parents'

home in Bath Township.



Besides her family and home, she enjoyed nature and the outdoors.



She was a founder of the Kinney Pioneer Museum. She was a 70-year

member of the American Legion Auxiliary.



Survivors include one daughter, Georgia Ludeman of Mason City;

son, James Ludeman and his wife, Carole, of Mason City; four

granddaughters, Candice Marshall and husband, Pat, of Clear Lake;

Pam Downing and her husband, Mike, of North Oaks, Minn., Kristine

Gatewood and her husband, Steve, of Brownsville, Texas; and Joy

Under Baggage of Rapid City, S.D.; three great-granddaughters;

five great-grandsons; one sister, Betty Cimijotti and her husband,

Leo, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three

brothers.

Clara F. Fischer

MASON CITY 



Clara F. Fischer, 81, 1317 N. Quincy Ave., died Wednesday (Jan.

8, 1997) at the Willow Creek Health Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Grace

United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Herbert

Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major

Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour

prior to services at the church on Saturday.



Memorials may be given to the Clara F. Fischer Memorial Fund.



Clara was born Feb. 27, 1915, at Mitchell, Iowa, daughter of

Lee B. and Iva Belle (Bartell) Phillips.



She grew up in the Mitchell and Osage areas and attended schools

there also.



She was married to Melvin F. Fischer on Aug. 18, 1932, at Osage,

Iowa.



She lived in Charles City for 25 years, then moved to Stoddard,

Wis., for six or seven years, then lived in LaCrosse, Wis., for

many years. She moved to Mason City in 1991.



She enjoyed traveling, doing crafts and reconstructing fur coats.

She was active in her church wherever she lived.



She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Mason

City, and a member of the Degree of Honor.



She enjoyed going to the Mason City Senior Citizens Center.



She is survived by daughters, Audrey Warren and her husband,

Kenneth, Mason City, Shirley Allison and her husband, Max, Appleton,

Wis., and Elizabeth Sandy and her husband, Bob, Kenosha, Wis.;

son-in-law, Delbert Cross, Floyd; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-

grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces

and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Estelle Fischer, Charles City.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter,

Olga Cross; one sister; and three brothers.

Joseph H. Madden

MASON CITY  



Joseph H. Madden, 79, of 513 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, died

Wednesday (Jan. 8, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient

Unit, Mason City.



A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph

Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev.

Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph

Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City

Veterans Memorial Association.



Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural prayer service

beginning at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary

at 8 p.m.



Joseph H. Madden was born April 22, 1917, in Dougherty, son

of Thomas and Regina (Hogan) Madden.



He was married to Onnalee Ersland on Oct. 12, 1940, at Holy

Family Catholic Church, Mason City.



Joe spent his childhood years in Dougherty and some of his fondest

memories were of the days he spent with his grandfather, John

Hogan, on his horse farm.



He graduated from St. Joseph High School in Mason City and served

in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was stationed on

Tinian Island in the South Pacific, where he served on the ground

crew of the Enola Gay.



Joe served 33 years on the Mason City Police Department, retiring

in 1979. He was associated with Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapels

for more than 25 years.



He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 40 years.



He belonged to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, he was a 3rd

Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1006, and a

4th Degree member of the Monsignor Dougherty Assembly of the

Knights of Columbus.



Joe was also a member of the American Legion Clausen-Worden

Post #101, the Veterans of Foreign Wars San Juan Marine Post

#733, the Fraternal Order of the Moose Lodge, and the Iowa State

Police Association.



Survivors include four daughters, Linda Hapgood and her husband,

Jerry, Camarillo, Calif., Catherine Day and her husband, Bob,

Waukesha, Wis., Mary Jo Profeta and her husband, George, Evanston,

Ill., and Rose Ann Stoltenberg and her husband, Randy, Mason

City; two brothers, John Madden, Oak Park, Kan., and Tom Madden,

Mason City; three sisters, Rosalie Woodhouse, Mason City, Mary

Floy, Thornton, and Jean Bamrick, Rockwell; 11 grandchildren,

John, Paul, Joseph, and Patrick Hapgood, Brian, Kevin and Ryan

Day, Molly and Anthony Profeta, and Amy and Rachel Stoltenberg.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Onnalee on

Feb. 7, 1987; two brothers, Russell Madden and Raymond Madden

in infancy; and one grandson, Peter Madden Hapgood.

Hazel Marie Walters

MASON CITY  



Hazel Marie Walters, 92, of the Sheffield Care Center, formerly

of 118 16th St. N.W., died  Monday (Jan. 6, 1997) at the Sheffield

Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today (Friday) at

Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev.

Herbert Shafer officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St.Joseph

Cemetery.



Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will be held one

hour prior to services today at the church.



Memorials may be given to the Hazel Walters Memorial Fund.



Hazel M. Walters was born March 23, 1904, in Belle Plaine, the

daughter of Harry Everett and Bertha Jane (Shaull) Dull.



The family moved to Mason City in 1906 where Hazel graduated

from Mason City High School in 1922.



She married Tom Walters on Feb. 27, 1926, at Garner.



Hazel worked for Damons Department Store for 23 years retiring

in 1976.



She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church, was

a member of the U.M.W., church circle and Eastern Star.



Survivors include two daughters, Sally J. Thrams and her husband,

Charlie, of Mason City, and Linda L. Lubkeman and her husband,

Alva, of Rockwell; one son, Raymond E. Walters of Eveleth, Minn.;

16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom; son,

Thomas; and one sister, Myrtle Stoltenberg.

Dwight R. Pogemiller

CHARLES CITY 



Dwight R. Pogemiller, 72, of 407 Second Ave., died Friday (Jan.

10, 1997) at home.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry Vallery and the Rev. Debra

Lincoln officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser

Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends

from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday. There will

be further visitation one hour before services at the church.



Dwight R. Pogemiller was born Nov. 7, 1924, at Newport.



Survivors include his wife, Marlys, of Charles City; three sons,

Keith Pogemiller of Muscatine, Craig Pogemiller of Charles City,

and Garry Pogemiller of Council Bluffs; one daughter, Nancy Daley

of Waukon; six grandchildren; and three brothers, Thomas Pogemiller,

Robert Pogemiller and James Pogemiller, all of Wapello.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one

brother.



The family suggests memorials to the Heart to Home Hospice,

Floyd County Cancer Friends or to the Trinity United Methodist

Church Memorial Fund for scholarships.

THOMPSON 



Milford Michaelson, 84, of 267 First Ave W., died Thursday

(Jan. 9, 1997) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating. Burial

will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Winter

Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.



Milford Michaelson was born April 29, 1912, in Garden City.



Survivors include his wife, Betty Michaelson, Thompson; one

son, Merrill Michaelson, Thompson; two daughters, Lindy Rautio,

Portland, Ore., and Patricia Michaelson, Thompson; two grandchildren;

one brother, Orlo Michaelson, Story City; and seven sisters,

Verna Borton of Nevada; Mildred Murray of Moline, Ill.; Fern

Marsh of Long Beach, Calif.; Dorothy Woodbury of Arlington, Va.;

June Egland of Story City; Laura Settle of Nevada, and Virginia

Marshall of Canyon City, Calif.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two

sisters.

Edna Helen Hollatz Muller

FORT MORGAN, Colo.  



Edna Helen Hollatz Muller, 91, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 1997)

at Valley View Villa. Burial was Jan. 4, at the Riverside Cemetery,

Fort Morgan.



Edna Hollatz was born June 26, 1905, in Newburg Township, Mitchell

County, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Helena Hollatz.



She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and attended

Carpenter, Iowa, schools. After her education, she worked for

the St. Ansgar Enterprise.



On March 3, 1926, Edna Hollatz and Arnold Muller were married

in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa.



They farmed in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa.



In 1949, they moved to Fort Morgan, where they were partners

in the Muller-Sheve Feed and Seed Store.



Survivors include her daughters, Helen and her husband, Del

Ingvalson of Gaylord, Minn., and Mildred McPhail of Osage, Iowa;

grandchildren, Barbara and Mark Anderson of Woodbury, Minn.;

Gary and Evette Ingvalson of Mankato, Minn.; Jeanne and Ron Bruggeman

of Northwood, Iowa;  Brian McPhail of Osage, Iowa; Jay and Natalie

McPhail of Hanley Falls, Minn.; Susan Palmer of Ogden, Utah;

Jason Buxman of Port Orchard, Wash.; Jeremy Buxman of Corpus

Christi, Texas; and Jennifer and Eric Mello of Burlington, Wash.;

16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren;

one brother, Ortwein Hollatz of Osage, Iowa; one sister, Elsie

Dieterich of Osage, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold;

one daughter, Carol Buxman; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Buxman

and Mary Lea Leonard; four brothers; and three sisters.

at home.

Vivian G. Miles, 84, died Friday (Jan. 10, 1997) at the Willow

Creek Health Care Center, Mason City.

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Hetrick officiating. Burial

will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup

Funeral Home.



Vivian Geraldine Miles was born on June 18, 1912 at Garner,

the daughter of John and Theresa (Blaschke) Peterson.  She attended

the Garner School system.  She was united in marriage to Ellsworth

``Todd'' Miles in Forest City on May 29, 1931.  They made their

home in the Thornton area where they farmed.  She was a member

of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church.



She is survived by a son, Richard R. Steussy and his wife, Joan,

of Novato, Calif.; three grandchildren; Christina, Cynthia and

Chester; two great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Rachel Steussy;

one brother, Verner Peterson and his wife, Gertrude, of Mason

City; one sister, Dorothy Swaim of Mason City; and several nieces

and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three

brothers.



In lieu of flowers, friends may give memorials to the St. Paul

Evangelical Lutheran Church of Thornton.

Lyle L. Zirbel

WEST DES MOINES  



Lyle L. Zirbel, 73, formerly of the Mason City area, died Saturday

(Jan. 11, 1997) at the Valley Junction Health and Rehabilitation

Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hamilton's

Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines, with Pastor Elton Richards

officiating.  Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Des

Moines.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral

home.



Lyle L. Zirbel was born March 11, 1923 in Hanford, the son of

Herbert Zirbel and Ella (Frienz) Zirbel.  He lived most of his

life in the Mason City area, moving to Des Moines in 1974.  He

was retired from working in the Ruan Building as maintenance

engineer and also in the security department.



Lyle was in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.



He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.



Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae (Mealey) Zirbel of West

Des Moines; one son, Jim Zirbel of Charles City; two sisters,

Shirley Rice of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Alice Graves of Mason

City; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Ella (Frienz)

Zirbel; his first wife; one brother, Herman Zirbel; and one son,

Jerry Zirbel.

LeRoy Oscar Arringdale Jr., 73, of 10 S. Adams Ave., #6, died

Monday (Jan. 6, 1997) in Avon, Ohio, following an auto mishap.



His body was cremated.  There will be no visitation.  Hogan

Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of a

arrangements.



Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St.

John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Robert

Towner officiating.  Inurnment will take place at a later date

at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.



LeRoy O. Arringdale Jr. was born July 30, 1923 in Boston, Mass.,

the son of LeRoy O. and Lola I. (Nelson) Arringdale.  He was

raised in Needham, Mass. and served in the Navy during World

War II, stationed in the Pacific.



LeRoy drove truck for Shippers Service and then worked at Sedars

Pontiac as a mechanic for many years until retiring.



He was an active lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign

War and a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Cooties.

He was also a member of the Moose Lodge.



Survivors include one daughter, Linda Tody and her husband,

Ken, of Antioch, Wis.; one son, Roger Arringdale of Escondido,

Calif.; two sisters, Margaret C. McLean of Hatfield, Mass., and

Elizabeth Simpson of Beverly Hills, Fla.; one grandson; five

nieces and nephews; and many special friends in the Mason City

area.

Laurence Frederick Radloff, the son of Frederick and Minnie

(Behrens) Radloff, was born July 29, 1915, on a farm near Klemme.

He was baptized at a Lutheran church in Postville.  Laurence

attended the rural schools of Ell Township and then farmed with

his parents.  On Feb. 18, 1915, he married Evelyn Neva Hansen

at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Nora Springs.



They farmed southeast of Garner on the home farm all of their

married life.  Laurence loved his wife and his church.  He encouraged

young people and often asked how they were doing and what their

future plans were.  He also had a strong interest in community

and school activities.



He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he had served

as a Sunday school teacher for 51 years.  He served as a soil

commissioner and was a member of the Beef Producers and Pork

Producers.



He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Radloff of Garner; a sister,

Gertrude Meyer of Mason City; a brother, Ray Radloff and his

wife, Ann, of Garner; a sister-in-law, Ella Radloff of Lyle,

Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fred

Radloff and Harold Radloff; and three sisters, Ruth Radloff,

Frieda Radloff and Ruby Quintus.

nine years at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Carl was born Aug. 15, 1904 in Mason City, son of Frank F. and

Matilda (Smith) Haase.  He attended and graduated from Mason

City High School in 1922.  He was married to Esther C. Halson

on May 26, 1926 in Mason City.  She preceded him in death on

Nov. 11, 1974.  Carl worked for many years for the Standard Oil

Company until 1956 when the office closed.  He then worked for

the Edgar S. Gage Company until 1961.  For the next five years

he was self-employed as the Haase Accounting and Tax Service

retiring in 1966.



He was a life member of the First United Methodist Church, Past

Master of Benevolence Lodge #145 AF and AM; Past Illustrious

Master Mason City Council #45; Past High Priest of Benevolence

Chapter #46; Past Eminent Commander Antioch Commandery #43; Knights

Templar, Mason City; Past President of the North Iowa Shrine

Club; a members of El Kahir Temple, Cedar Rapids; a member of

Cedar Rapids Consistory and the Unity Chapter #58; Alchor Shrine

#6, Mason City; a member of Eastern Star and White Shrine; Mason

City High 12 Club; Treasurer for 20 years of the Masonic Temple

Association; a member of the Foundation Board of NIACC and was

active in soliciting funds for the United Way and was an active

volunteer for Hospice of North Iowa.



Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Lange of Evanston, Ill.;

one sister-in-law, Ethel Haase of Austin, Minn.; special friends,

Florence Juliar of St. Clair, Minn., and Ruth Rekow of Mason

and most recently at the Harmony House, totaling 30 years, retiring

in 1993.



Kay is survived by four daughters, GySgt. Wanda Howell of Jackson,

Miss., Mary Peverill of Waterloo, Pam Hayden of Lakeville, Minn.,

and Dena Berryman of Waterloo; two brothers, Richard of Kingston,

Idaho, and James of Mason City; one sister, Lorraine Jenison

of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by one son, Guy; and three brothers,

Sigrid Harter Heinz was born July 2, 1927, in Columbus, Neb.,

the son of the Rev. F. Albin Heinz and Adeline (Matthias) Heinz.

He lived with his family in Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa.  After

graduating from Mason City, Iowa,  High School in 1944, he served

in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and 1946 and attended Mason City Junior

College.



He was married to Maxine Flatness of Manly, Iowa, on Oct. 5,

1952.  Sig was friendly, considerate and devoted to his family.

They have lived in Pasco, Wash., for 20 years.  He represented

International Harvester Company to its dealers for 37 years while

living in Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington.



Survivors include his wife, Maxine; a daughter, Elizabeth A.

South and her husband, Michael, of Spokane, Wash., and their

daughters, Kelsey and Kadi; a son, Charles D. and his wife, Dottie,

of Federal Way, Wash., and their daughters, Jenna and Kari; two

brothers, Al and his wife, Janet, of Mason City, and Paul and

his wife, Jean, of Clear Lake; seven nephews; and three nieces.



He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Norma

Kliven of Rockford, Ill.

Eka Janssen, daughter of Jasper and Tena (Winter) Dirkson, was

born April 10, 1913 near Buffalo Center.  She attended country

school at Lincoln  No. 4 School.



Eka was a life-long member of the Buffalo Center First Reformed

Church were she belonged to the Dorcus Circle and the Golden

Club.  she enjoyed traveling, baking and dearly enjoyed her grandchildren

and great-grandchildren, never forgetting a birthday.



Eka became a resident of Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo

Center, in May of 1994.  There she still practiced her faith

by participating in the Bible Study programs.



She will be dearly missed by her husband, Robert, of Buffalo

Center; two daughters, Agnes Hartman and her husband, Ronald,

of Crystal Lake, and Carolyn Vodraska and her husband, Mike,

of Clarion; four grandchildren, Cindy Rippentrop, Julie Jesson,

Chris Redenius and Michelle Vodraska; 12 great-grandchildren;

and one sister, Ella Dirkson of Buffalo Center.



Eka was preceded in death by her parents, Jasper and Tena Dirkson.

Patricia (Tice) Reams was born Feb. 29, 1932, at Clear Lake,

She grew up and received her education in Clear Lake, graduating

from Clear Lake High School in 1950.



Patricia married Gilbert Reams on June 25, 1950, at the Clear

Lake Methodist Church.



She was employed as an accounting clerk for Sears, in Burnsville,

Minn., and then in Phoenix, for 20 years.



Survivors include her husband, Gilbert Reams, of Phoenix, Ariz.;

two daughters, Karen Plaman and her husband, Ron, of Eagan, Minn.,

and Rhonda Anderson and her husband, Bradley, of Phoenix, Ariz.;

one son, Lon Reams and his wife, Jean, of Litchfield Park, Ariz.;

four grandchildren, Robert Plaman of Eagan, Minn.; Nicole Anderson

Dorothy A. Burris was born Nov. 17, 1916, at Davenport, the

daughter of John and Bertha (Schmidt) Woehlk.  She grew up and

attended school in Davenport.  She married Eugene F. Burris in

1937 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua.



Dorothy was very involved in school and church activities when

her children were growing up, participating in Cub Scouts, Girl

Scouts, and the PTA, serving as president.  She enjoyed cooking,

sewing, watching and feeding the animals in her yard.  She loved

her grandchildren dearly and was very interested in their various

activities.



Dorothy especially loved the cabin she shared with her family

on the Grand Mesa in Colorado, and spent some of her happiest

times there.  She filled the cabin front with native wild flowers.



She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.  She was

an honorary member of the Peace Circle and served in the past

as its president.  She also was a member of the Altar Guild.



Survivors include her husband, Eugene F. Burris of Clear Lake;

three children, Ron Burris and his wife, Brenda, of Dublin, Ohio;

Dennis Burris and his wife, Barbara, of Dexter, Ore., and Wendy

Keen and her husband, Will, of Mason City; grandchildren, Jon,

Jeff, Roddy and Tom Burris, Heather Preston, Briceanne Bailey,

Nancy Frame, Brent Bailey, Johannah Keil, Korenza Burris and

Jennifer, Aimee and Nathan Keen; and one brother, Johnny Woehlk

of Chicago, Ill.

Percy A. Howland was born on a farm south of Forest City in

Hancock County on Nov. 8, 1914, the son of Ernest and Kate (Stieff)

Howland.  He attended rural school and graduated from Forest

City High School in 1934.  He was married to Esther Jensen on

Jan. 6, 1938, at Calvary Baptist Church.  The couple lived briefly

on a farm southwest of Forest City until moving to their present

home in 1939.  After he quit farming, Percy worked at Winnebago

Industries in Forest City from 1966 until his retirement in 1979.

He and his wife enjoyed camping and gardening.  Esther died

in 1991.  Percy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and served

on the Board of Directors for the Garner Co-op Association. 

He was a gifted woodworker and loved spending time in his woodshop.



Percy died at his home on Jan. 6, 1997, at the age of 82 years.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Roger and Barbara Howland

of Clear Lake; two daughters, Eileen Butz of Clear Lake, and

Alice Roath and her husband, Gary, of Mason City; a brother,

Eugene Howland of Clear Lake; four grandchildren; and six great-

grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther; two

daughters, Mavis Ann and Beverly Sue; a brother, Harold Howland;

and a sister, Leila Johnson.

Hazel M. Walters was born March 23, 1904, in Belle Plaine, the

She married Tom Walters on Feb. 27, 1926, at Garner.



Hazel worked for Damons Department Store for 23 years retiring

in 1976.



She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church, was

a member of the U.M.W., church circle and Eastern Star.



Survivors include two daughters, Sally J. Thrams and her husband,

Charlie, of Mason City, and Linda L. Lubkeman and her husband,

Alva, of Rockwell; one son, Raymond E. Walters of Eveleth, Minn.;

John E. Fitzgerald was born on July 17, 1929, in Rockwell, the

son of John and Irene (Meehan) Fitzgerald.



He attended and graduated from the Rockwell school system.



On May 7, 1949, he was united in marriage to Barbara Cahalan

at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell.



John was an avid sports enthusiast, who played and watched all

types,  especially slow and fast pitch softball.



He was recently inducted into the Mason City Softball Hall of

Fame. John once bowled a 299 and enjoyed golfing, fishing and

hunting pheasants.



John won many awards and honors as car salesman for various

dealers in Mason City.



John was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Joseph

Catholic Church.



He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Mrs. Don

(Sue Ann) Bergman of Fort Dodge, and Mrs. Mark (Teresa) Dilbeck

of Altadena, Calif.; two sons, John F. and his wife, Donna Fitzgerald

of Mason City, and Kevin Fitzgerald of Altadena, Calif.; three

sisters, Mrs. Lowell (Geraldine) Hart of Bettendorf; Mrs. Donald

(Sharon) Kruckenberg of Rockwell, and  Mrs. Melvin (Kaye) Kruckenberg

of Rockwell; two brothers, Irv and his wife, Margaret Fitzgerald

of Mesa, Ariz., and Leo P. and his wife, Jo Fitzgerald, of Preston,

Minn.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces

and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John Joseph

Dorothy F. Bowen

MASON CITY 



Dorothy F. Bowen, 90, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 1997) at the Willowcreek

Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Silver

Creek Reformed Church, Silver Creek, Minn., with the Rev. Don

Jansen officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery,

Silver Creek, Minn.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton

Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., and one hour

prior to services at the church.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider

memorials to the Silver Creek Reformed Church.



Dorothy was born on July 17, 1906, at Sandstone, Minn., the

daughter of Johannes and Fannie (Vork) Plaggerman.



She graduated from Sandstone High School in 1926 and continued

her education at St. Cloud State College, receiving a Bachelor

of Science Degree in 1961.



She then taught at Annandale Public School where she retired

in 1972. She received the prestigious Outstanding Elementary

Teacher of America award.



She was united in marriage to Bret Bowen on June 12, 1936. at

Spencer, and helped him with farming at Hinckley and Clear Water,

Minn.



She moved to Silver Creek, Minn., in 1957, then to Maple Lake

in 1986, and in the fall of 1991 to Mason City.



While at Silver Creek, she was very involved with her membership

at Silver Creek Reformed Church and the Christian Women's Club

where she was a coordinator for the Stone Croft Bible Studies.

She also was a member of the Minnesota Teachers Association.



She is survived by her nephew and wife, Dean and LaVonne Blackmer;

four great nieces, Cheryl Anderson, Patti Florman and Tammy Marsh,

all of Mason City,  and Julie Davis, Brussels, Belgium; one great

nephew, Roger Marsh of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Gladys Plaggerman,

Sandstone, Minn.; and some very special friends in Iowa and Minnesota.



She was preceded in death by her husband in November of 1962,

two sisters and five brothers.

LeRoy Oscar Arringdale Jr., 73, of 18 S. Adams Ave., Apt. #6,

died Monday (Jan. 6, 1997) in West Lake, Ohio, following an automobile

accident.



The body was cremated. There will be no visitation.



Memorial services are tentatively scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday

at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E.

1997) at the Dumont Care Center.

Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Jake Wessels, 71, of 2307 Highway 9, died Tuesday (Jan. 7,

1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First

Reformed Church, with the Rev. William Peake officiating. Burial

will be in the Olena Mound Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Winter

Funeral Home, and one hour before services Saturday at the church.



Jake Robert Wessels was born July 15, 1925, near Buffalo Center.



Survivors include his wife, Geraldine, of Buffalo Center; two

sons, Bryan Dean Wessels of Buffalo Center, and Bruce Alan Wessels

of Thompson; one daughter, Doreen Sue David of Eddyville; seven

grandchildren; and two sisters, Gretchen  Boehm and Jean Swalve,

both of Buffalo Center.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

the Heritage Nursing Home.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Garry-

Art Weber was born Dec. 5, 1917, at the family farm west of

Bancroft.



Survivors include a sister, Lauretta Weber; and a brother, Alphonse

Weber, both of Bancroft.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and four

brothers.

full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial
