MASON CITY -- J. Fred Stockberger, 92, of 241 Willowbrook Dr., died Monday (Dec. 30, 1996) at the Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and until noon on Friday at the funeral home. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

** Dr. Harry Boysen

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Dr. Harry Boysen, 92, of 49-680 Coachella Dr., La Quinta, Calif., died Sunday (Dec. 22, 1996) at home.

Following cremation, graveside services will be held at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 1992, at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Dougherty.

** Ruth Lillian Logeman

MANLY -- Ruth Lillian Logeman, 88, of Manly, died Monday (Dec. 30, 1996) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly.

** Daniel Dawson Downing

MASON CITY -- Daniel Dawson Downing, 91, of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 30, 1996) at the Rockwell Nursing Home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. John R. Kremer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery where there will be a flag-folding ceremony conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel.

** Robert W. Quindt

NORTHWOOD -- Robert W. Quindt, 83, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 1996) at the Lutheran Retirement Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. on Friday until time of services at the Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Robert W. Quindt was born Dec. 12, 1913, in Menomonie Falls, Wis.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Cooper of Adams, Minn., JoAnn Acheson and Marcia Olson, both of Northwood; one son, David of Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Grinnen of Owatonna, Minn.; and one brother, Harvey Quindt of St. Ansgar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and six sisters.

** Sister Mary Margaret Donnelly

STORM LAKE -- A memorial Mass for Sister Mary Margaret (Dorothy) Donnelly, PBVM, 78, of Storm Lake, was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Storm Lake. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 12:30 p.m. at the church, followed by public visitation until 2:30 p.m. prior to Mass.

Sister Mary Margaret Donnelly died on Sunday (Dec. 29, 1996) at Sioux City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Sisters of the Presentation Mother House, Dubuque. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Dubuque.

Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Storm Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Mary Margaret was born on Jan. 17, 1918, in Dougherty to Edward and Margaret (Murphy) Donnelly.

She was educated in elementary and high school at St. Patrick Schools in Dougherty and received a B.A. degree from Loras College, Dubuque.

She entered Sisters of the Presentation on Sept. 7, 1937. Her final profession was on July 31, 1943.

She taught in elementary schools and worked in parishes in Clare (1940-43), Farley (1943-46), Fairbank (1946-53), St. Columbkille, in Dubuque (1953-56), Humboldt (1956-61), Key West 1961-63), Whittemore (1963-66), Monona (1966-1969), Osage (1969-74), and St. Mary in Storm Lake (1974-96). She had most recently been involved in pastoral visitation.

She is survived by brothers and sisters, Ray Donnelly and his wife, Marcella, Mason City; Eleanor Donnelly, Mason City; Vince Donnelly and his wife, Rosalie, of Lakewood, Ohio; Mary Behr of Rockwell; and Therese Gagnon and her husband, Chuck, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Rita and Jane Frances; and brothers, Leo and Joe.

** Max Donald Barnett

BRITT -- Max Donald Barnett, 77, passed away Monday (Dec.30, 1996) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Britt, with the Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating.

Friends may greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Home, Britt.

Max, the son of Alfred and Carmen McDonald Barnett, was born on Dec. 26, 1919, in Marble Rock.

He graduated from Marble Rock High School.

In 1947, he was united in marriage with Dorothy Dubbert in Cedar Falls. The couple lived in Greene and Nora Springs, where Max worked at the Nora Springs Lumber Yard.

In 1956, they moved to Britt where Max was manager of the Farmers Coop Lumber Yard and later general manager of the Farmers Coop.

In 1964, he became a sales rep for Key Wholesale until his retirement in 1985.

Max was a member of the Britt United Methodist Church where he served on the building committee and the finance committee.

He was very active in many community services, especially the Lions Club and the Meals on Wheels program.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Jo Maupin and her husband, Donald, of Waukesha, Wis., and their son, Scott; Jean Swenson and her husband, Paul, of New Hampton, Iowa, and their daughter, Ann.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

** Gordon McQueen `Mack' Fish

WATERLOO -- Gordon McQueen ``Mack'' Fish, 95, of Waterloo, former Clear Lake summer resident, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 1996) at Convenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Memorial Park Chapel, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, both in Waterloo.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at O'Keefe & Towne-Grarup & Waychoff Funeral Home, 250 National Dr., Waterloo.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

He was born June 4, 1901, in Kansas City, Kan., son of Edward and Mary McQueen Fish.

He married Pearl Hartleip on June 24, 1926, in Waterloo. She died Dec. 26, 1979.

He founded and operated Fish Insurance Agency for many years, retiring in 1965.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and John Fieseler, of Clear Lake; two grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Michael McQueen and Kelly Fieseler and Franklin John and Marianne Fieseler; two great-grandsons, Gordon McQueen Fieseler and Daniel Jacob Fieseler.

** Dorothy M. Klatt

MASON CITY -- Dorothy M. Klatt, 75, of 639 14th St. N.E., died Sunday (Dec. 29, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave., with the Rev. Miles Grismore and the Rev. David Callison officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services at the church.

Dorothy M. Klatt was born May 19, 1921, in rural Ackley, Iowa, the daughter of George and Elsie (Noordman) Boheman.

Dorothy attended and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1938.

Dorothy married William Klatt on Jan. 28, 1939, in Mason City. Dorothy and Bill resided in Mason City all of their married life.

She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church, Mason City.

She is survived by her husband, William ``Bill'' Klatt, Mason City; one daughter, Karen Klatt of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Luella Froning and Ruth Soucek; and two brothers, Dick and George Boheman.

** Marjorie Katherine Burns

SIERRA MADRE, Calif. -- Marjorie Katherine Burns, 73, of Sierra Madre, Calif., passed away on Tuesday (Dec. 10, 1996) at her home after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Sierra Madre with Monsignor Joseph Cokus and Monsignor Leland Boyer con-celebrating the funeral Mass. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Cabot & Sons Funeral Home, Pasadena, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Majorie Burns was born Feb. 10, 1923, at Rockwell, Iowa, daughter of Katherine and George Freudenberg.

She was graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1941 and from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 in Mason City. She was employed as a surgical nurse at Mercy Hospital for a time before moving to Pasadena, Calif. where she continued in nursing for several years. Volunteer nursing became an important phase in recent years as well as public school nursing.

Marjorie was married to Robert J. Burns on Aug. 3, 1949, in Pasadena, Calif.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Burns Sr.; three sons, Bob Burns Jr., of Sacramento, Calif., Michael and Stephen, both of Sierra Madre, Calif.; three daughters, Mary Ellen Kanoff, Pacific Palisades, Calif.; Lisa Mohr, San Marino, Calif., and Linda McDaniels of Rancho Cucumonga, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, W.J. Freudenberg, of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Gerald Freudenberg, Laughlin Nev.; four sisters, Mary Lou Ashland, Mason City, Betty Meyer of Pasadena, Calif., Ruth Ann Derouin, Dubuque, and Patricia Bamrick, Long Beach, Calif.; an aunt, Ruth Knapp, Mason City; also survives, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Janice Doud; and one brother, George C. Freudenberg Jr.

** Bertha M. Carter

CHARLES CITY -- Bertha M. Carter, 3111 250th St., Charles City, died Friday (Dec. 27, 1996) at Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Friederike Tarr, pastor of Colwell United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday.

Bertha May Carter was born Sept. 8, 1899, at Charles City.

Survivors include a brother, Earl Carter of Alexandria, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one infant sister.

 

** Floyd E. Robie

CLARION -- Floyd E. Robie, 85, of Clarion, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 1996) at the Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church, Clarion, with the Rev. Margaret Desmond of Ames officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, Clarion.

Floyd E. Robie was born Jan. 27, 1911, in Blairsburg.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene of Clarion; three daughters, Beth Wunder of Ames, and Mary Kallem and Jo Anne Olson, both of Clarion; 11 grandchildren; and one brother Millard Robie of Clarion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

** J. Fred Stockberger

MASON CITY -- J. Fred Stockberger, 92, of 241 Willowbrook Drive, died Monday (Dec. 30, 1996) at the Heritage Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and until noon on Friday. There will be further visitation one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the J. Fred Stockberger Memorial Fund or the Wesley United Methodist Church.

J. Fred Stockberger was born Oct. 10, 1904, the son of George T. and Alpha Z. (Massee) Stockberger in Menomonie, Wis.

Fred moved with his family to Cartersville at the age of 4.

He attended country school near Rockwell, Cartersville and in Owens Township.

Fred served in the National Guard for three years before he married Irene Sears on Jan. 20, 1924, in Mason City.

Fred worked for a short time at Northwestern States Portland Cement Plant and the Mason City Street Department.

Fred then started the Stockberger Transfer and Storage Inc. where he was president and owner for 65 years until he retired in 1989.

He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, and I.O.O.F. Lodge where he was a life member. He was a past member of the U.C.T. (United Commercial Travelers) and Mason City Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Family Motorcoach Association, where he served as a national director.

Survivors include a son, Lloyd Stockberger and his wife, Vera, of Mason City; daughter, Winifred Rasmussen and her husband, James, of Mason City; daughter, Viola Fisk and her husband, LeRoy, of Mason City; daughter, Ellen Weiss and husband, Frank, of Mason City; daughter, Betty Clarke of Mason City; and a son, George Stockberger and his wife, Mary Lou, Mason City; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Stockberger and his wife, Evelyn, of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene, in July of 1996; twins in infancy in 1932; one brother, Frank; and one granddaughter, Caroline Rasmussen Dyer.

** Daniel Dawson Downing

MASON CITY -- Daniel Dawson Downing, 91, of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 30, 1996) at the Rockwell Nursing Home, Rockwell.

Daniel Dawson Downing was born Jan. 15, 1905, in Swaledale, son of Edward E. and Mary Inez (McGee) Downing.

He was employed at the Pfaff Baking Company in Mason City from July 1925 to July 1942.

On July 21, 1942, he began active duty in the United States Naval service. He served for three years in the Pacific.

After discharge, he returned to Mason City where he has lived since.

He was employed by the Northwestern States Portland Cement Plant until his retirement in 1969.

Survivors include four nephews, Steve Tiernan, Peoria, Ill.; John Tiernan, Salinas, Calif.; Bill Pugh, Topeka, Kan., and Jack Pugh, Denver, Colo.; one niece, Tess Tiernan, Stillwater, Minn.; and one cousin, Helen Tompkins of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Edward Downing; four sisters, Anne Downing, Agatha Downing, Margaret Downing Pugh and Frances Downing Tiernan; and a nephew, Thomas Tiernan.

** Sena Josephine Loken

CORALVILLE -- Sena Josephine Loken, 95, of Coralville, formerly of Northwood, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 1997) at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, with the Rev. Don Hodson officiating. Burial will be in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the chapel.

The family of Sena Josephine Loken has requested that memorial contributions be made to Manna of Worth County in her memory.

Sena Josephine Loken was born on Sept. 19, 1901, in Northwood, the daughter of Theodore and Annie (Evenson) Johnson.

She attended and received her education in the Hartland Township #6 school in Worth County and also attended Northwood High School.

After her father's death, she helped her family on their farm in Worth County, near Northwood.

She was united in marriage to Arnold JoHan Loken on Dec. 15, 1926, in Northwood. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1952.

In 1944, they moved to Mason City where she worked for the Hanford Hotel in housekeeping in Mason City, moving to Coralville in 1960, living with her daughter, Patricia Dee and her family and working at the Hawkeye Lodge in housekeeping until her retirement in 1981. She had been a resident of the Latern Park Care Center in Coralville since 1984.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, flowers, embroidering and Norwegian customs, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

She was a member of the Johnson County Historical Society, Friends of Coralville Public Library and Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Survivors include two daughters, Thera Patricia Dee of Coralville, and Ardis Hughes and her husband, Jim, of Farmersburg; one son, Dennis Loken and his wife, Mary, of Springfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, Deborah Dee of Auburn, Mass.; Douglas Dee and his wife, Bonnie, of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; Diana Bascio and her husband, Joseph, of Springfield, Ill.; Karen Morant and her husband, Bruce, of St. Louis, Mo., and Alan Loken and his wife, Susan, of Springfield, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, twins, Jack and Betsy Dee of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Lauren Bascio of Springfield, Ill.; one aunt, Mable Holton of Crosby, N.D., as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Willie and Joseph Johnson; and sisters, Alice Loken and Elma Lokken.

** Clyde E. Neel

CLEAR LAKE -- Clyde E. Neel, 68, of 124 N. 20th St., died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave N., with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with an Order of Odd Fellow Service beginning at 7 p.m. Further visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

CLARKSVILLE -- Harold McCoy, 89, of Sheffield, formerly of Clarksville, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, with the Rev. Steve Hollingsworth of the First Baptist Church of Sheffield officiating.

Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery, Clarksville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Harold McCoy was born Aug. 2, 1907, in Clarksville.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice McCoy of Clarksville; one daughter, Virginia Yeager of Waterloo; one son, Daryl McCoy of Waterloo; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lyle McCoy of Fairbault, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ruth Lillian Logeman was born on March 14, 1908, in Madrid, the daughter of James William and Elva Mae (Kugler) Godfrey. As a child, she lived in several small towns across Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Fred Henry Logeman on Sept. 30, 1925, at Union Township, in Worth County. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1973.

Ruth was involved in farming throughout all of her life. She loved horses and trail-riding, sewing, making handicrafts, gardening and growing flowers.

She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, the Rebekahs, Mason City Trailriders, Shell Rock Dinner Club, Friendship Circle and the Manly Camera Club.

Survivors include three children, Wesley Logeman and his wife, Ruby, of Northwood; Vivian Blake and her husband, James, of Mason City, and Vera Waychus of Mason City; 11 grandchildren, Karen Feddersen of Charles City; Betty Logeman of Vancouver, Wash.; Don Logeman and Cindy Dirks, both of Mason City; Deanna Harris of Rockford; Ruth Ann Powers of Jackson, Mo.; Doug Waychus of Mason City, and Ron Balek of Manly; Fred Balek and Ted Balek, both of Mason City; and David Waychus of Rockford; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beva Pixley of the Manly Care Center and Ioam Godfrey of Boone; a sister-in-law, Margaret Godfrey of Northwood; and many nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one great-grandson, Shane Waychus; one sister, Irene Eilertson; and two brothers, Carl Godfrey and Orble Godfrey.

** Maynard Holstad

EL CENTRO, Calif. -- Maynard Holstad, 70, of El Centro, died Monday (Dec. 30, 1996) at the San Diego hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, west of Kensett, Iowa, with the Rev. Vernon Holstad officiating.

Maynard Holstad was born June 13, 1926, in Worth County, Iowa.

He attended school and graduated from Hanlontown, Iowa.

He was a real estate broker in El Centro until his death.

He is survived by three sisters, Gilma Lenz of Riceville, Iowa; Marlene Hansen of Roseville, Minn., and Ethel Hansen of Arcadia, Calif.; four brothers, Leslie of Mason City, Iowa; Irwin of Phoenix, Ariz.; Duane of Kensett, Iowa, and Vernon of Knoxville, Tenn.

MANLY -- Ruth Lillian Logeman, 88, of Manly, died Monday (Dec. 30, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

The family of Ruth Lillian Logeman has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly in her memory.

Ruth Lillian Logeman was born on March 14, 1908, in Madrid, the daughter of James William and Elva Mae (Kugler) Godfrey. As a child, she lived in several small towns across Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Fred Henry Logeman on Sept. 30, 1925, at Union Township, in Worth County. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1973.

Ruth was involved in farming throughout all of her life. She loved horses and trail-riding, sewing, making handicrafts, gardening and growing flowers.

She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, the Rebekahs, Mason City Trailriders, Shell Rock Dinner Club, Friendship Circle and the Manly Camera Club.

Survivors include three children, Wesley Logeman and his wife, Ruby, of Northwood; Vivian Balek and her husband, James, of Mason City, and Vera Waychus of Mason City; 11 grandchildren, Karen Feddersen of Charles City; Betty Matz of Vancouver, Wash.; Don Logeman and Cindy Dirks, both of Mason City; Deanna Harris of Rockford; Ron Balek, Manly; Fred Balek and Ted Balek, both of Mason City; Ruth Ann Powers of Jackson, Mo.; Doug Waychus of Mason City, and David Waychus of Rockford; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beva Pixley of the Manly Care Center and Ioam Godfrey of Boone; a sister-in-law, Margaret Godfrey of Northwood; and many nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one great-grandson, Shane Waychus; one sister, Irene Eilertson; and two brothers, Carl Godfrey and Orble Godfrey.

CORALVILLE -- Sena Josephine Loken, 95, of Coralville, formerly of Northwood, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 1997) at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, with the Rev. Don Hodson officiating. Burial will be in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the chapel.

The family of Sena Josephine Loken has requested that memorial contributions be made to Manna of Worth County in her memory.

Sena Josephine Loken was born on Sept. 19, 1901, in Northwood, the daughter of Theodore and Annie (Evenson) Johnson.

She attended and received her education in the Hartland Township #6 school in Worth County and also attended Northwood High School.

After her father's death, she helped her family on their farm in Worth County, near Northwood.

She was united in marriage to Arnold JoHan Loken on Dec. 15, 1926, in Northwood. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1952.

In 1944, they moved to Mason City where she worked for the Hanford Hotel in housekeeping in Mason City, moving to Coralville in 1960, living with her daughter, Patricia Dee and her family and working at the Hawkeye Lodge in housekeeping until her retirement in 1981. She had been a resident of the Latern Park Care Center in Coralville since 1984.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, flowers, embroidering and Norwegian customs, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

She was a member of the Johnson County Historical Society, Friends of Coralville Public Library and Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Survivors include two daughters, Thera Patricia Dee of Coralville, and Ardis Hughes and her husband, Jim, of Farmersburg; one son, Dennis Loken and his wife, Mary, of Springfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, Deborah Dee of Auburn, Mass.; Douglas Dee and his wife, Bonnie, of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; Diana Bascio and her husband, Joseph, of Springfield, Ill.; Karen Morant and her husband, Bruce, of St. Louis, Mo., and Alan Loken and his wife, Susan, of Springfield, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, twins, Jack and Betsy Dee of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Lauren Bascio of Springfield, Ill.; one sister, Nina Sorbo, Estherville; and one aunt, Mabel Holton of Crosby, N.D., as well as other relatives and friends.

Gertie Bruns was born Sept. 29, 1912, south of Aplington, Grundy County, a daughter of Ben H. and Jennie (Meyer) Bruns, and died Thursday (Jan. 2, 1997) at the Allison Care Center in Allison, of complications from a heart attack.

She received her education in the rural schools near Aplington and later at Madison Township School.

As a young lady, she stayed home to help her mother and care for her baby brother.

On Aug. 30, 1932, she was united in marriage to Will H. Debner at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar. To this union were born four children. Will and Gertie made their home on the Debner family farm where they remained until December of 1968 when they moved into Greene. Following Will's death on Oct. 3, 1988, she continued to live in her own home until her recent illness.

Gertie was baptized at the Bethel Reformed Church in rural Aplington and confirmed a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar on March 25, 1934, where she taught Sunday school for many years and sang in the church choir.

She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society and WELCA.

Music played an important part throughout Gertie's life. As a young girl singing songs with her family members at home, and later singing in the church choir, or often times singing or humming a melody by herself gave her much joy.

Gertie enjoyed being with her grandchildren and doing special things for them. She cross stitched table cloths for all the grandchildren and made many quilts.

She enjoyed baking cookies, playing cards with her friends until her failing eyesight forced her to stop, and going out for pizza.

Living family members include one daughter, Diane and Gary Baumbach of Iowa City; three sons, Will F. and Betty Debner, Kenneth and Helen Debner, all of Greene; and Wendell and Margaret Debner of St. Paul, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Steve and Lonna Debner of Allison; Mark and Brenda Debner of Zumbrota, Minn.; Joel and Julie Debner of Jesup; Kent and Connie Debner of Greene; Ann and Steve Schumacher of Salem, Ore.; Jennifer Debner of Long Beach, Calif.; Margaret and Nick Street of Stillwater, Okla.; Marvin and Lori Debner of Ankeny; Susan Debner of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Doug Debner of Iowa City; 19 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Henry and his wife, Susan Bruns of Clarksville. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Norma Bruns of Allison and Tena Bruns of Kesley.

Leonard Ralph Kubly was born Aug. 7, 1919, on a farm at rural LuVerne, the son of F. Wilbert and Marie (Kraft) Kubly. He was baptized and confirmed at LuVerne.

In 1941, Leonard married LaVon Haaland in Blue Earth, Minn. Leonard and LaVon farmed at rural Garner until 1974 when they retired to Clear Lake.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Dolores was born March 16, 1930, at Faribault, Minn., daughter of Hugo and Cora (Meinke) Preuss.

She attended and graduated from Faribault High School in 1948 and then attended Mankato Business School.

She moved to Mason City in 1950 and worked for one year for Standard Oil.

She was married to Darell Pike on June 9, 1951, at Faribault, Minn. They moved north of Rock Falls in 1954.

She worked for Armour Meat Packing Plant from 1968 until her retirement in December of 1992.

Delores received the Lord Jesus Christ as her own personal saviour on Nov. 2, 1962.

She was a member of the 16 Club of Rock Falls.

Lila Mae Kloster was born on July 21, 1912, in Winnebago County, the daughter of Gilbert and Matilda (Eide) Gullickson.

She graduated from Forest City High School and attended Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

She taught in rural schools for several years.

On Nov. 25, 1944, she was married to Raymond Kloster in Scarville. The couple farmed northeast of Forest City until 1969. They moved into Forest City in 1971.

Lila was a member of the Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was active in Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Agnes Gullickson of Forest City and Anne Gullickson of Lake Mills; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; two brothers, Lester and Caroll Gullickson; and two sisters, Myrtle Anderson and Gladys Rafdahl.

CLEAR LAKE -- Clyde E. Neel, 68, of 124 20th St., died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Clyde E. Neel was born March 27, 1928, in Humboldt, son of Cecil B. and Leona (Hunt) Neel.

He married Shirley Bacon on Feb. 5, 1954, in Clear Lake, and found joy in each of their 43 years of marriage.

Clyde grew up in the Mason City area and attended school in Clear Lake. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

After his marriage, he worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for 13 years and then he was a custodian at Lincoln Elementary School for 18 years until retiring in 1990. After retirement, he and his wife spent their winters in Arizona or Texas.

Clyde was an avid collector and enjoyed going to auctions. He enjoyed camping and being outdoors. He enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren, and took pleasure visiting with friends.

He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church and the I.O.O.F. Lodge #187.

Leonard Joseph Formanek, the son of Joseph Thomas and Rose (Vavrik) Formanek was born Aug. 19, 1927, on a farm near Hayfield. He attended school at Hayfield, graduating in 1944. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1945-47. After the service he returned to Hayfield and farmed with his parents. On Nov. 15, 1949, he married Marie Ann Kakoubek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They farmed the family farm south of Hayfield until 1985. Leonard was a bus driver for Hayfield Community Schools for 21 years, delivered vehicles for Iowa Mold Tooling Company, Winnebago Industries, Fieldstone Cabinetry, Unicover Inc., and Nieman's Ltd. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandson, and also playing cribbage with his sons and grandchildren. Family, friends, bowling, golfing, playing softball (until age 60) and working on crossword puzzles were all important to Leonard. He also served on the Garner-Hayfield High School football chain gang for 28 years, highlighted by working at the 1995 state finals football game.

He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he had served as a lector, director of the school board and Catholic Workman's Lodge.

Leonard will be greatly missed by his wife, Marie Formanek, of Hayfield; four sons, David Formanek and his son, Brian, both of Garner; Bernard Formanek and his wife, Lorrie, and their children, Kendra Mackey and her husband, Matt, and their son, Tate; Eric Formanek and Michele Formanek, all of Garner; Mark Formanek and his three children, Joe Formanek, Marie Formanek and Jesse Formanek, all of Avon, Minn., and Keith Formanek and his wife, Cari, and their three children, Nick Formanek, Taylor Formanek and Cory Formanek, all of Britt; his mother, Rose E. Formanek of Garner; two sisters, Dorothy Nedved and her husband, Leo, of Garner, and Darlene Nielsen and her husband, Hans, of Fort Dodge; many nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law, Rose Jakoubek of Garner.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Formanek, in 1961; his father, Joseph T. Formanek, on Oct. 27, 1982; a brother, Don Formanek in 1967; a sister-in-law, Mary Formanek; and his father-in-law, John Jakoubek in 1982.

** Elsie Stewart

CHARLES CITY -- Elsie Stewart, 91, of Charles City, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 1997) at the Ninth St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Greg Lugn of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday.

Elsie Marie Freiberg Stewart was born Dec. 13, 1905, in Charles City.

Survivors include one son, David Stewart of Williamston, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and five brothers.

** Genevieve M. Smith

MASON CITY -- Genevieve M. Smith, 100, of 810 Seventh St. S.E., died Thursday (Jan. 2, 1997) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

Genevieve M. Smith was born July 2, 1896, in rural Worth County, the daughter of James and Ann (Ryan) Smith. Her family moved to Mason City in 1911.

After graduation from Mason City High School and Hamilton Business College, Genevieve worked at the Cerro Gordo County Extension Service as an office assistant. She served during one session of the Iowa Legislature as Committee Clerk and secretary with Senator William McArthur, and finally, until retirement, as assistant manager to the Federal Land Bank, Mason City office.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Margaret Smith of Rochester, Minn., and Marie Smith of Dubuque; two nephews, Dr. James M. Smith of Kansas City, Mo., and Dr. Thomas F. Smith of Rochester, Minn.; four great-nieces; two great-great-nephews; one great-great-niece; and numerous cousins in Mason City, Worth County and California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Clare Smith Cahill; and three brothers, Edward, Francis and Justin J. Smith.

MASON CITY -- Carl W. Haase, 92, of 221 Second St. N.W., died Friday (Jan. 3, 1997) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Wayside Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave.

** Ed Allen

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Ed Allen, 58, of Portland, died suddenly Dec. 21, 1996, of an apparent heart attack. Memorial services were held on Dec. 29, 1996, at the First United Methodist Church in Portland.

Ed, the son of Valera Allen of Mason City, Iowa, and the late Ernest Allen, was born in Rockwell, Iowa, and lived in Mason City until graduating from Mason City High School in 1956. He attended Iowa State University earning a B.S. degree in forestry. He retired in 1994 after 34 years with the U.S. Forestry Service, serving all of those years in the Northwest.

Ed is survived by his wife, Kelly; daughter, Jeri Glogovac and her husband, Chris, and sons, Ben and Scott of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and daughter Valerie Windsor and son, Drew, of Cathlamet, Wash. He is also survived by his mother, Valera Allen, Mason City, Iowa; brothers, Rus Allen of Duluth, Minn., and Jerry Allen of Urbandale, Iowa; one sister, June Pringnitz of Urbandale, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
