Osa O.Tuthill
 

MASON CITY —Osa O. Tuthill, 77, of 144 Sunny Circle, Mason City, died Tuesday (Dec. 23,1997) at St. Mary's Hospital. Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be l held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and continue until time of services on Saturday.

Osa O. Tuthill was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Murrayville, III., daughter of John and Lena Blanche (Andrew) O'Brien She married Harold L. "Tut" Tuthill on Aug. 5, 1939, in Mason City.

Osa grew up in Murrayville, III. She and her family moved to Clear Lake at the age of 10 and later moved to Mason City, where she graduated from Mason City High School.

Osa worked as a nurses aide and a unit clerk at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for more than 30 years, until retiring in 1982.

She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed traveling to visit her family.

She took great delight being called "Grandma Tinkerbelle" by her great-grandsons.

She had a close friend from childhood, Ruth Stump.

She was past president and an active member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, a past member of the Order of Cooties, and a member of the First United Methodist Church

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Peterson and her husband, Clifford, Mason City; two sons, Ray Tuthill, Mason City, and Allan "Pinky" Tuthill and his wife, Kazi, East Point, Ga.; four grandchildren, Michele Schulz and her husband Scott, Wyoming, Minn., Melissa Zimmer and her husband, Anthony, Great Falls, Mont. Timothy Peterson, Mason City, and Andrea Tuthill, Mason City; five great-grandsons, Thomas, Jeffrey and James Schulz, all of Wyoming, Minn., and Joshua and Anthony Zimmer, both of Great Falls, Mont.; three sisters, Catherine Fuller, Rockwell, Barbara Ellen McGriff, Newton, and Alice Veryle Carlson, Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Sara O'Brien and Viola O'Brien, both of Mason City; many nieces and nephews; and special friends of the family, Mitsy, Tammy, and Judy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Jan. 7, 1993; one granddaughter, Laurie Peterson; one sister, Esther Smith; and two brothers, George O'Brien and J.R. (Dick) O'Brien.

Johanna Secilia Nelson

LAKE MILLS — Johanna Secilia Nelson, 102, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday (Dec. 23, 1997) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral service} will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Bethany Lutheran Church.

Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Johanna Secilia Nelson was born Nov. 11, 1896, on a small island north of Stavanger, called Fogn, Norway.

Survivors include her son, Leonard Nelson, of Leland; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister.

Nina Fleming

CHARLES CITY — Nina Fleming, 102, of Cedar Terrace North, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Hauser Funeral Home, Inc., 1205 S. Main St., Charles City.

Fredrick D. Henely

FOREST CITY—Fredrick D. Henely, 44, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Dec. 24, 1997) at North Iowa Mercv Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Doug Farrell, officiating. Burial will be in Howardville Cemetery, north of Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.

Fredriek Dale Henely, the son Id Charles "Gene" and Anna Marie (Rasmussen) Henely, was born March 27, 1953, at Charles City.

He attended school and graduated from Charles City High School in 1971.

He moved to Forest City and worked at Winnebago industries for five years and then began working at the Forest City Light Plant where he became the Electric Department Superintendent in1995. Fred enjoyed his family and riding motorcycles.

He attended Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the Forest City Fire Department, Pilot Knob Amateur Radio Service and was an amateur radio operator (Ham) since the age of 14.

He is survived by his wife, Jolene Henely, of Forest City; three sons, Joseph Henely, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Eric and Martin Henely, both of Forest City; two stepchildren, Jody Gall and her husband, Jacob, of Mason City and Raymond McCoy and his wife, Connie, of Mason City; one grandchild; four stepgl andehildren; parents, Gene and Anna Marie Henely, of Charles City; a brother, Kenneth Henely and his wife, Darla, of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

llene Henrietta Anderson

LAKE MILLS—Irene Henrietta Anderson, 74, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Dec. 22, 1997) at the Naeve Hospital, Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Jeanne Martin officiating.

Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Ilene Henrietta Anderson was born June 21, 1923, in Clear Lake.

Survivors include her husband, Norris, of Lake Mills; three sons, Glenn Anderson, Lake Mills, Erbin Anderson, of Northwood; and Robert Anderson, of L three daughters, Noreen Heimdal, Lake Mills; Diane Smith, of Crystal Lake; and Sheryl Bell, of Lake Mills; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Erbin Walkner, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Milo Walkner, of Peoria, Ariz.; and two sisters, Gayla Lien, of Lake Mills; and Ardella Olson, of Albert Lea, Minn.

Ilene was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister in infancy and one grandson.

Irene Sefton

DOWS—Irene Sefton, 88, of Dows, died Tuesday (Dee 23, 1997) at the Dows Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Dows, with the Rev. James Lusher officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elledge Funeral Home, Dows.

Irene Sefton was born Jan. 7, 1909, in Xenia, Ill.

Survivors include two sisters Cleo Nicholson, of Belmond, and Thelma Sefton, of Dows.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Kenneth Warren Brevig

KENSETT—Kenneth Warren Brevig, 71, of Kensett, died Tuesday (Dec. 23, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bethany Lutheran

Church, Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer "Sam" G. Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Kensett Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Kenneth Warren Brevig was born on Dee. 31, 1925, in Austin, Minn., the son of Paul and Annette (Jones) Chapman. At the age of two, he was adopted by Gilbert and Verna Brevig. He attended and received his education in the Houston, Minn., school system. After completing his schooling he helped his parents on the family farm.

He reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in 1939. At the age of 15, he traveled to Chicago, Ill., and worked in the steel mills. From Chicago, he moved to Washington state, working on the highway road construction.

In the early 1940's he moved to Portland, Ore., and worked as a street ear conductor and while in Portland, he met and fell in love with Dorothy Heffel and was united in marriage on Dec. 19, 1945.

In 1946 they moved to Houston, Minn., where he did mechanical work, helped his dad farm and also drove gravel trucks. In 1947 they moved to Manly, and in 1948 they moved to Kensett where he worked for Bratrud Equipment fixing ears and trucks, and also worked for Deckers in Mason City. In 1951, he began working for the Rock Island Railroad as a switchman in Manly until his retirement in 1980. After his retirement he opened his own repair shop called Brevig Repair Service, in Kensett. He also worked as a Pinkerton Detective for two years in Southbridge Mall in Mason City, as well as being on the police force in Kensett.

In order for him to complete his 31 years of service to the railroad he worked for the Cedar Valley Railroad as a conductor in Osage until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing and camping.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett and also taught Sunday School. He was a member of the Kensett Lions Club, Kensett Volunteer Fire Department, Kensett City Council, and was a member of the Local Railroad Union.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Dorothy Brevig, of Kensett; seven children, Darlene Oakland and her husband, Robert, of Glenville, Minn.; Barbara Peterson and her husband, Maynard, of Lake Mills; Garry Brevig and his wife, LaVone, of Gordonsville, Minn.; Larry Brevig and his wife, Marcella, of Kensett; Richard Brevig and his wife, Bonnie, of Northwood; Kenneth R. Brevig and his wife, Teresa, of Northwood; and Mark Brevig and special friend, Lanita Harnack, of Northwood; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; one brother,

Ronald Grenier and his wife, Dorothy, of New Market, Md.; and one sister, Arlene Koors, of Warsaw, Ind.; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; foster parents and adopted parents; two sons, Terry and Michael Brevig; one brother, Harold Chapman; and one sister, Virginia Norstrom.

MASON CITY—Manon F. Glesseman, 82, of 1303 10th St. S.E., died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Joan 'Jo' Sills

CHARLES CITY—Joan "Jo" Sills, 72, of 407 Seventh St., died Tuesday (Dec. 23, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Grace Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Kathryn Campbell officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Vinter Park Cemetery in Kent, England.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, Ine., 1206 S. Main St., Charles City.

Joan Mary Mumford was born Dec. 3, 1926, at Balham, London, England.

Survivors include her husband, Roland Sills, of Charles City; two sons, Richard Sills, of Coralville, and Patrick Sills, of Mason City; two grandsons; one stepgrandson; four sisters, Barbara O'Leary, of Byfleet, England, Shirley McDonald, of Minster, England, Patricia Hurkett, of Sheerness, England, and Doris Daniels, of Sittingbourne, England; and one brother, Ronald Mumford, of Minster, England.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

The family suggest} memorials be given to the Grace Episcopal Church or Heart to Home Hospice.

William John Noelck

GENEVA — William John Noelck, 66, of Geneva, died Wednesday (Dec. 24, 1997) at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hampton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry McCann officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hampton.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

William John Noelck was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Carroll.

Survivors include his wife Ruth Noelck, of Geneva; one stepson, Vernon Meinberg, Hampton; two stepdaughters, Virginia Meinberg, Hampton, and Joyce Roekwell, Glenwood; three brothers, Emil Noelck, Hampton, Melvin Noelck, Melcher, and Walt Noelck, Audubon; and four step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and one brother.

Bonnie Simon

ROCKWELL — Bonnie Simon, 95, formerly of 210 Jefferson, Rockwell, died Wednesday (Dec. 24, 1997) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Bennie W. ‘Ben’ Bartleson

CLEAR LAKE — Bennie W. "Ben" Bartleson, 68, of 1616 W. Seventh Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Friday (Dec. 26, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen and the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Post No. 4838.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Bennie W. Bartleson was born March 2, 1929, in Forest City, the son of Benard Bartleson.

He married Lorraine Carolus on May 2, 1953, in Belmond.

Ben grew up in Forest City and attended Forest City Schools. He entered into the Navy in 1945 and served on the U.S.S. Hector.

He worked for Home Insulation in Mason City for 35 years and then worked eight years at Zion Lutheran Church until retiring in 1994.

Ben was an avid golfer and he enjoyed fishing. He loved spending time with his grandson, Sam.

He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Clear Lake V.F.W., and All Vets Golf Course.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Bartleson, of Clear Lake; one daughter, Dawn Treloar and her husband, Tim, Clear Lake; one grandson, Samuel Eli Treloar, Clear Lake; five sisters, Charlotte Klatt, Mason City, Vonnie Lynch and her husband, Bob, Marshalltown, Mildred Wilkins and her husband, Bob, Marshalltown, Marian Bartleson, Clear Lake, and Anna Balmer, Marshalltown; three brothers, Russell Balmer, Green Mountain, Carl Balmer, Marshalltown, and Harold Balmer, Green Mountain; five brothers-in-law, Vernon Carolus, Radcliffe, Donald Carolus and Merwin Carolus, both of Mason City, Merlin Carolus, Harlington, Texas, and Everett Schrieber, Bloomington, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; his grandparents; one brother, Carl Bartleson; three sisters, Alberta Iverson, Marie Schrieber and Val Bartleson; and a special niece, Marnie Vivalda.

Harold W. ‘Buddy’ Holmes Sr.

MANLY — Harold W. "Buddy" Holmes Sr., 56, of 304 W. Walnut, Manly, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., Mason City, with Dwight Webster officiating. Burial was in the Manly Cemetery.

Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, was in charge of arrangements.

Harold W. Holmes Sr. was born Nov. 10, 1941, in Des Moines, son of Harold and Loretta June (Slater) Maupin.

He married Pamela Kibsgaard on June 22, 1975, in East Park, Mason City.

Harold grew up in Des Moines and attended North High School. He was a member of the Des Moines YMCA Swimming and Diving Team from 1951 until 1956.

He worked at Central States Auto Auction for 10 years and then worked for Rock Island Railroad in Manly. He was also a supervisor for Carroll-George Company in Northwood for four years.

He and his wife operated Buddy’s A-One Car Detailing in Osage until his illness.

Harold was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed cleaning cars and he loved spending time with his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Holmes, Manly; five children, Harold Holmes Jr. and his wife, Delia, Northwood, Chezron Anderson and Kim Anderson, both of Minneapolis, Minn., Rollando Kibsgaard and his wife, Voncile, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Candice Kibsgaard, Manly; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his father, Harold Maupin and his wife, Kathy, Chaplin, Minn.; two brothers, Lawrence Holmes and his wife, Cindy, Rockwell City, and Guy Maupin, Chaplin, Minn.; four sisters, Vaunetta Washington and Toni Williamson, both of Des Moines, Edith Maupin, Chaplin, Minn., and Edith Williams, Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, Richard and Lee Kibsgaard, Manly; his former wives, Vicki Whiteside and Gwen Anderson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother; one daughter, Christine, in infancy; and one sister, Juanita Slater.

Beatrice ‘Bea’ Baldwin

ALGONA — Beatrice "Bea" Baldwin, 93, of Algona, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Algona, with the Rev. Philip Webb officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona.

Bea was born Oct. 20, 1904, at Bancroft.

Survivors include one son, Bert Baldwin, of Spirit Lake; three daughters, Arlene Schumacher, of Joliet, Ill., Alma Marshall, of Algona, and Ruth Heller, of Spirit Lake; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four brothers and three sisters.

Kenneth Wayne Stoakes

CLEAR LAKE — Kenneth Wayne Stoakes, 70, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at his home in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

Friends may call from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Sunday at the church.

Funeral services also will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck, with the Rev. Fred Harris officiating. Burial will be in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

The French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck is in charge of arrangements in Reinbeck.

Kenneth Wayne Stoakes was born April 23, 1927, in Traer, Iowa, in Tama County, the son of Newell Sherman and Julia Anne (Myers) Stoakes.

He attended and received his education in Hudson, Cedar Falls Lab Schools and rural country school in Geneseo. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1945. He also attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Neta Louise Neidiger on Aug. 8, 1948, at United Methodist Church in Traer.

After their marriage, he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1950 from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. In 1954, he completed his master’s degree from Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, Colo. He also worked on his doctorate degree at the Unversity of Iowa in Iowa City. He was a recipient of the National Science Foundation Scholarship.

At the age of 27, he was superintendent in Martelle. In 1950, he was a coach for basketball and baseball and was acting principal in the Malcolm schools. From 1952 until 1955, he was a teacher and coach in the Orange schools; from 1955 until 1960, he was superintendent in the Martelle schools; 1960 until 1966, he was principal at Jefferson School in Mason City; from 1966 until 1989, was superintendent in Reinbeck; and from 1989 until 1994, was curriculum director in Reinbeck until his retirement when he moved to Clear Lake.

He enjoyed reading, golf, woodworking and young people.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, Kiwanis Club in Mason City, Lions Club in Reinbeck, former member of the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck and was on numerous service and professional organizations throughout his life.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Neta Stoakes, of Clear Lake; his mother, Julia Stoakes, of the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City; two daughters, Linda (Stoakes) Daseke and her husband, Bob, of Vancouver, Wash., and Kathleen Stoakes, of Des Moines; one son, Dr. David Stoakes, and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Christopher Stoakes and Heather Stoakes, both of Grinnell, and Meggan Daseke, of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Doris Nothnagel, of Waterloo; and Hazel Himebaugh and her husband, Marvin, of Cedar Falls; and one brother, Dr. Dean Stoakes and his wife, Gladys, of Salem, Ore.; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Nina Fleming

CHARLES CITY — Nina Fleming, 102, a former resident of Cedar Terrace North, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patricks Cemetery, in Elroy, Wis., with the Rev. Rick Roberts, pastor of the St. Patricks Catholic Church, officiating.

The Hauser Funeral Home, Inc., 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.

Nina Olga Torrence Fleming was born July 4, 1895, in Kendall, Wis.

Living family members include one son, Gilbert "Skip" Fleming, of Charles City; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter, one brother and two sisters.

THOMPSON — Opal Mae Friesenborg, 90, of Thompson, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at the Timely Mission Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating. Interment will be in the Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Opal Mae Friesenborg was born July 18, 1907, near Kanawha.

Survivors include two sons, Gary, of Buffalo Center, and Tim, of Golden City, Mo.; two daughters, Arvilla Allen, of Rockford, Ill., and Jackie Larson, of Buffalo Center; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Arlene Warner, of Rockford, Ill., Wanda Cairns, of Traverse, Fla., and Helen Nitzband, of Eufaula, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons and one daughter.

Bonnie Simon

ROCKWELL — Bonnie Simon, 95, formerly of 210 Jefferson in Rockwell, died Wednesday (Dec. 24, 1997) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. South, Rockwell.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel, where other arrangements are incomplete.

Marcene M. Shapley

NORA SPRINGS — Marcene M. Shapley, 58, of 403 Sixth St. N.W., Nora Springs, died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye St., Nora Springs.

There will be no visitation. Her body was cremated. Other arrangements are incomplete at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel.

ROCKWELL — Deborah Jean (Scholl) Check, 32, of Lakeville, Minn., formerly of Rockwell, died Friday (Dec. 26, 1997) at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church in Lakeville, Minn. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockwell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, 20134 Kenwood Trail, in Lakeville, and from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church in Rockwell. Memorials may be given to the John and Deb Check Memorial Foundation, Norwest Bank, 14325 Cedar Ave. S., Apple Valley, Minn. 55124.

Deb Check was born October 30, 1965, in Mason City, the daughter of David and Mary (Cornelius) Scholl of Rockwell.

She married John Check on May 12, 1990, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

Deb grew up in Rockwell and graduated in 1984 from Newman Catholic School. She also was a graduate of North Iowa Area Community College and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Deb was a volunteer care partner for the Bone Marrow Unit at Fairview University Hospital. She was employed by the Hilton Hotel and the city of Rosemount, Minn.

Deb was full of life and enjoyed being with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Kyle Arthur and Benjamin Check; her parents, David and Mary Scholl, Rockwell; one sister, Kathleen, and her husband, Jay Siefken, Rockwell; three brothers, Gregory, Rockwell, Timothy and his wife, Lisa, Mason City, and John and his wife, Stephanie, Ankeny; two nieces, Sadie and Mattie; two nephews, Jeremy and Sam, Rockwell; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Roy and Ruth Scholl, Rockwell, and Earl and Rosetta Cornelius, Mason City.

ROCKWELL — Bonnie Simon, 95, formerly of 210 Jefferson, died Wednesday (Dec. 24, 1997) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. S., with the Rev. David Shogren of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City, officiating.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home and the family will receive friends from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Monday and continue until service time at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Bonnie Simon Memorial Fund.

Bonnie was born on Jan. 6, 1902, at Oakland Iowa, one of six children of Frank and Sarah Jane (Clark) Reineke. She attended rural schools and moved to Rockwell in 1919.

Following her marriage to George Simon she worked at home for the Simon Trucking Company answering the phones, dispatching drivers and doing the bookkeeping. She was a hard worker and her husband was dependent on her skills to keep the company flourishing.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Ladies Aid Society. She enjoyed baking bread, which her husband loved, sewing and tending her very large vegetable garden. Even though her family was not large she proudly canned her vegetables for their use.

She and George made three trips to North Carolina to visit her granddaughter, traveling by van and Amtrak train so they could spend time with their family and great grandchildren. In November 1996 she and her husband moved to the Rockwell Community Home.

She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, George; her son, James, and his wife, Jane Simon, Ames; two granddaughters, Lori, and her husband, Rick Richardson, Wilson, N.C., and Jami Simon, New York, N.Y; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Allison Richardson, both of Wilson, N.C; three sisters, Mildred Simon, Gladys Wearda and Geneva Cahalan, all of Rockwell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Bruce and Frank Reineke.

Marion F. Giesseman was born Jan. 8, 1915, at Piqua in Orange Township, Miami County, Ohio, the son of William C. And Bonnie (Millhouse) Giesseman. Marion graduated from Sydney, Ohio, High School in 1933. He was baptized at Spring Creek Baptist Church in Piqua. Marion was a sales engineer in the tool and die field, retiring in 1982. That same year the Giessemans moved to Mason City. Marion was a member of the Society of Tool Engineers and enjoyed hunting, fishing and his grandchildren. Marion married Ruth E. Lund Dec. 21, 1946, at Wesley Methodist Church in Marion, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Giesseman, Mason City; four daughters, Andrea Frank and her husband, Steven, Park Rapids, Minn., Marjorie Rehbach and her husband, Conrad, Viroqua, Wis., Joanne Giesseman, Minneapolis, Minn., and Judy Richards, Tipp City, Ohio; three sons, Michael Giesseman and his wife, Julie, Cedar Rapids, Norman Giesseman, Tipp City, Ohio, and David Giesseman, Tipp City, Ohio; one brother, Elden Giesseman, San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Betty Elson, Sydney, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Betty Giesseman, Piqua, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren.

Stephanie enjoyed listening to music, babysitting, wrestling with her brothers and dad and the car her parents had just bought her. She was filled with kindness and compassion and was loved and will be missed by all.

Earl Leroy Monson was born Sept. 18, 1915, the son of Hans and Winnie (Jergensen) Monson, in Winnebago County. He was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church. He attended the rural schools of Winnebago County.

On Sept. 20, 1946, he was married to June Parsons at St. John’s Parsonage in Nashua. They raised their family on a farm in Ellington Township. After farming, Earl worked in plumbing, heating and air-conditioning installation for many years. Earl enjoyed golfing, shooting pool, fishing, horseshoe throwing, dancing and traveling. In his later years he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watching sports.

He was a member of Pilot Knob Lutheran Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school.

He is survived by his wife, June Monson, Forest City; four daughters, Cheryl Thompson and her husband, Bill, Mason City, LaDonna Underwood and her husband, Dave, Wapello, Marilyn Thomburg and her husband, Mike, Mt. Pleasant, and Kim Jessen and her husband, Kevin, Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Archie Monson, Forest City; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Monson, Forest City, and Hazel Monson, Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers, Willard, Kenneth, Elmer, Glen, Milton and Clement Monson.

NORA SPRINGS — Marcene M. Shapley, 58, of 403 6 St. N.W., died Thursday (Dec. 25, 1997) at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye St., with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating.

The body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

Marcene M. Shapley was born Feb. 8, 1939, the daughter of Burr and Aola (Staats) Fisher, in Forest City. She married Vaughn Shapley on July 6, 1957, in Nora Springs.

Marcene grew up in Nora Springs and graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1956. She enjoyed reading and baking and she loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Survivors include her husband, Vaugh Shapley, Nora Springs; six children, Michael Shapley, Nora Spings, Mark Shapley, Mason City, Debra Shapley, Mason City, Meredith Willis, Clear Lake, Jackie Welsh and her husband, Rodney, Nora Springs, and Jennifer Shapley, Nora Springs; three grandchildren, Lisa, Caylor and Angela Shapley, all of Nora Springs; three brothers, Kenneth Fisher, Burr Fisher Jr. and Roy Fisher; one sister, Gayle Austin; several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Michelle Shapley, in infancy; and two sisters, Deloris Quam and, in infancy, Peggy Jean Fisher.

LAKE MILLS — Sybil Burlette Arthur, 77, died Saturday (Dec. 27, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Ellen Anderson will be the organist and Marilyn Peters, soloist. Sybil Burlette Arthur, daughter of Arthur S. and Katie Luella (Suby) Heimdal, was born Dec. 23, 1920, on her grandparents’ farm in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County.

Sybil was a member of Beaver Creek Lutheran Church her entire life. She attended Larson School District No. 3 for her elementary education. She graduated from Lake Mills School in 1938.

In June 1944 she married Harold Arthur at Asbury Park, N.J. Harold and Sybil farmed in the Hanlontown and Joice area until they moved to Lake Mills in 1991.

Sybil is survived by her husband, Harold Arthur, Lake Mills; her daughter, Ellen, and her husband, Mike Johnson, Stacy, Minn.; her son, John, and his wife, Karen Arthur, Coralville; seven grandchildren, Brandon Wood, Matthew Wood, Rick Wood Jr., Rodney Arthur, Chris Arthur, Damon Arthur and Kjersten Arthur; two sisters, Ruth and her husband, James Tweeten, and Carole and her husband, Vern Hagen, and a sister-in-law, Clara Hipp, all of Lake Mills; a brother, Paul and his wife, Sylvia Heimdal, Joice; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons, Dan Michael and Rodney Dean; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Moen, Ruth Stairs and Addie Foss; and a nephew, Alan Hagen.

Erna A. Doering was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Mason City the daughter of Fritz and Elsie (Naumgallis) Doering. She graduated from Mason City High School. Erna worked for Yelland & Hanes for over 30 years as a book buyer retiring in 1980. She also worked a short time for American Optical here in Mason City. Erna was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and was inducted into the River City Softball Hall of Fame in 1982.

Survivors include one cousin, Herbert Doering, Mason City, and several second cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Eldengart "Ellen" and Waltraut Doering.

She attended school in New Providence and Mason City moving here when she was 14 years old in 1928. She was united in marriage to Delbert Kinnan in 1938 in Mason City and then in June of 1952 she was united in marriage to Robert Sheffler in Lyle, Minn. She worked in her early years for Morris’s picking chickens and then started at J.B. Deckers and Sons meat packing plant in 1938 until she had her two children. She then restarted with Armours in 1942 and for her last 27 years, she worked in the Loin Room until retiring when the plant closed in 1975. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. During the summer from 1964 to 1982 she and her husband spent almost every weekend at their cabin at Women’s Lake, Minn., and then in 1982 they moved there permanently until 1986 when she moved back to Mason City following her husbands death. During their time at the lake she enjoyed the duck and loons, playing Canasta and visiting with her neighbors. She enjoyed meeting with her special friend, Genore Kopps, at Hy Vee West and then shopping at area stores.

Claudia is survived by her children, Roger and his wife, Janice Sheffler, Fort Madison, Larry and his wife, Wendy Kinnan, Mason City, Nancy Link and Mary Ann cook, both of Ackley; 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; two brothers, Max and his wife, Hildegard Butler, Eldora, and Bud and Gloria Butler, Marysville, Wash; four sisters, Della Geisler, Gert and her husband, Norm Meins, and Diama Huey, all of Washington State, and Stella and her husband, Ed Tosel, Mason City; and one sister-in-law, Martha Butler, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Jerry Hull, pastor of the Mason City Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Donnabell M. Lee was born April 19, 1919, in Mason City, the daughter of Alfred and Margaret (Pelton) Niles.

She married Leonard Lloyd Lee on Aug. 26, 1938, in Charles City.

Donnabell grew up in Mason City and attended Mason City schools. She worked many years at Armour’s until retiring.

She loved her dog, Rufas. She enjoyed singing and fishing.

Donnabell was a wonderful wife and mother. She will be very sadly missed by her son and daughter.

Survivors include her son, Morley Venus Lee and his wife, Sherrine, Mason City; one daughter, Ronnae Lorrie Padilla and her husband, Rudy, Lake Forest, Calif.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves, pastor with Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and will continue prior to services on Wednesday.

Dixie Lou Lucas was born April 12, 1931, in Mason City, the daughter of Fred W. and Beulah C. Moore (Berger).

Dixie grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1949 and also graduated from North Iowa Area Community College.

She and her family lived most of their lives in Nora Springs. She worked many years at A.C. Nielsen Company in Mason City and Fond du Lac, Wis., until retiring in 1991. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at Washington Elementary School.

Dixie also volunteered at North Iowa Mercy Health Center and dressed as a clown for special events.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards and she had many special friends. She was active with her children in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Survivors include three children, Michael Lucas and his wife, Donna, Cedar Falls; Marty Lucas and his wife, Mary, Charles City; and Marcie Jones, Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Kim Lucas, Cedar Falls, and Emily, Maggie, and Cari Lucas, all of Charles City; two sisters, Dorothy Johnsen and her husband, Lee, Lakewood, Calif.; and Beth Hunt and her husband, Loren, Mason City; one brother, Bud Berger and his wife, Dixie, Rockwell; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Erna A. Doering

MASON CITY — Erna A. Doering, 81, died Friday (Dec. 26, 1997) at Heritage Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Erna A. Doering was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Mason City, the daughter of Fritz and Elsie (Naumgallis) Doering. She graduated from Mason City High School. Erna worked for Yelland & Hanes for more than 30 years as a book buyer retiring in 1980. She also worked a short time for American Optical here in Mason City. Erna was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and was inducted into the River City Softball Hall of Fame in 1982.

Survivors include one cousin, Herbert Doering, Mason City, and several second cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Eldengart "Ellen" and Waltraut Doering.

Vernon Edward Smith

HAMPTON — Vernon Edward Smith, 64, of Hampton, died Sunday (Dec. 28, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Nelson officiating. Interment will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Vernon Smith was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Burt.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Smith, Hampton; mother, Frances Smith, Algona; two sisters, Edith Frank, of Algona, and Ramona Smith, of Emmetsburg; and one brother, David Smith, of Fort Dodge.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and an infant son.

Nellie Mae Paul

CLARION — Nellie Mae Paul, 94, of Clarion, died Saturday (Dec. 27, 1997) at the Clarion Health Care Center.

The body was donated to the University of Iowa for medical research. There are no services scheduled at this time. Willim Funeral Home in Clarion is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie was born Dec. 28, 1903.

Survivors include two sons, Keith Alverson, Eustes, Fla., and Oscar Alverson, Alamagordo, N.M.; five daughters, Alberta Holm, of Tripola, Esther Schaefer, of Valencia, Calif., Gloria Alverson, of Des Moines, Marcy Downing and Mardell Dean, both of Clarion; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three brothers and three children.

Heather Kay Sanborn

CENTERVILLE, Minn. — Heather Kay Sanborn, 20, of 1994 S. Robin Lane, Centerville, Minn., was killed in an auto accident on Monday (Dec. 22, 1997), at Lino Lakes, Minn.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Roseville Memorial Chapel, Roseville, Minn., with the Deacon Russell Evans of St. John’s Catholic Church, New Brighton, officiating. Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery, Little Canada, Minn.

Memorials may be directed to the Heather Kay Sanborn Memorial Fund, 1994 S. Robin Lane, Centerville, Minn.

Heather was born on Sept. 22, 1977, in Fridley, Minn., the daughter of Kim P. and Linda (Prodger) Sanborn, former residents of Mason City.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Brighton, Minn.

Heather was a 1997 graduate of Centennial High School, Centerville, Minn., and was employed by Rainbow Foods of Minnesota.

Survivors include her parents, Kim P. and Linda Sanborn, Centerville, Minn.; a brother, Bob Sanborn, Centerville, Minn.; maternal grandparents, Robert and Phyllis Prodger, New Brighton, Minn.; paternal grandparents, Keith P. and Hazel Sanborn, Mason City, Iowa; and several aunts, uncles and cousins, and many friends.

Clarence Melvin Fish

ALGONA — Clarence Melvin Fish, 72, of 917 N. Minnesota St., died Sunday (Dec. 28, 1997) at the Kanawha Community Nursing Home.

Clarence Melvin Fish was born June 2, 1925, in Forest City.

ALGONA — Thomas F. Bestenlehner, 84, of 412 W. Kennedy St., died Sunday (Dec. 28, 1997) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Neva was born on April 15, 1904, in rural Lone Rock.

Hazel P. Holden

MASON CITY — Hazel P. Holden, 88, of 311 N. Greeley, Nora Springs, died Sunday (Dec. 28, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Kathy Graves, of Muse Norris Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel and again one hour prior to services on Friday.

Hazel P. Holden was born March 26, 1909, in Kansas.

She served as a nurses aide for the Red Cross during World War II.

Hazel began her career as a journalist with the Kansas City Star newspaper in Kansas City, Mo.

Later in 1953, she worked in the advertising department at the Globe-Gazette in Mason City. She spent 14 years at the Globe-Gazette, retiring in 1967.

She loved animals, reading, fishing and camping. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are two grandsons, Donald Durwood Duncan and his wife, Melea, Lees Summit, Mo.; David Douglas Duncan and his wife, Deloris, Sioux City; two great-grandchildren, Danika Duncan and Deanna Duncan; one stepgreat-grandchild, Amanda Rothe; one great-great-grandson, Robby; and two very dear friends, Thelma Bowen, Fort Meyer, Fla., and Marvyl "Sue" Tanner, Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett Wanner; and one daughter, Jeanne Duncan.

Walter H. Nagel

DOUGHERTY — Walter H. Nagel, 81, of Dougherty, died Tuesday (Dec. 30, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield. Interment will be in West Fork Cemetery, Sheffield, with military rites by the Hogan Briflin Post #354.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Walter H. Nagel was born on Sept. 21, 1916, on the family farm near Sheffield.

After receiving his education from country school, he began working for various farmers in the area. He moved with his family to Michigan where he helped out on the family farm.

He participated in the New Guinea Campaign while serving in the United States Army. Upon his return home, he began farming in the Sheffield area.

He was united in marriage to Marian "Mickey" Johnson on Sept. 28, 1960. They made their home in Dougherty.

Walter was self-employed as a farmer and a scrap iron worker. He enjoyed trapping and playing cards and bingo.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Germundson and her husband, DaWayne, of Mason City; one son, Lynn Nagel and his wife, Mary, of Dougherty; three grandchildren, Kyle, Dominic, and Ben; two sisters, Emma Ammerman, of Sheffield, and Lillian Pendergrast, of Odessa, Mo.; and one brother, Alfred Nagel, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
