Shirley Mabb

THORNTON — Shirley Mabb, 71, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Richland Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jerry Gernander officiating. Burial will be at Richland Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral Home.

Shirley Mabb was born on July 6, 1926, the daughter of Wm. and Grace (Worthington) Shonemann, on her parents’ farm in Franklin County. She attended country school before graduating with the class of 1943 from Thornton High School. She then went on to receive her business training from AIB Institute in Des Moines and soon went to work for Town Mutual Insurance Company in Des Moines. She was united in marriage to Duane Mabb on June 19, 1949, in the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton, where they made their home.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time in her kitchen, writing cards and letters and fishing. The annual family vacation to Vermillion Lake in Minnesota and also wintering in Bonita Springs, Fla., with her husband, Duane, were trips that will be fondly remembered by all.

She was a member of the Richland Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid of Thornton, a charter member of the Thornton Federated Women’s Club, and served as a member of the Auxiliary at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

Survivors include her husband, Duane; two daughters, Jane Sersland, and her husband, Keith, of Mason City, and Suzanne Ruiter, and her husband, Randy, of Denver; four grandchildren, Thomas and Evan Sersland of Mason City, and Megan and Bethany Ruiter of Denver; three sisters, Virginia Beale, and her husband, Jack, Pauline Schoneman, and her husband, Marion, and Judith Lightbody, and her husband, Larry, all of Thornton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Louise Lubkeman

SHEFFIELD — Louise Lubkeman, 95, died Friday (Nov. 28, 1997) in Sheffield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion-St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Grarup Funeral Home.

Louise Emma Maria Pauline Brammer was born May 25, 1902, in Franklin County to George and Emma Brammer. She was baptized on June 15, 1902, and later confirmed on April 1, 1917, at Zion Lutheran, Beeds Lake. She was raised and educated near Hampton. On Oct. 21, 1926, she married William Lubkeman at Eldora and moved to Sheffield. William passed away July 21, 1973.

Louise lived in her home until February 1992, when she moved to the Sheffield Care Center. She was a member of Zion-St. John Lutheran Church of Sheffield. She was active in ALCW, belonged to the U-Go-I-Go Club, Cemetery Society and Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed farm life and her garden. Many hours were spent crocheting, tatting and embroidering. Her special time was being with the family and friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Eleanor Olk, and her husband, Norman, of Clear Lake; one son, Alva Lubkeman, and his wife, Linda, of Rockwell; six grandchildren, Mike Olk, and his wife, Mary, of Clear Lake, Darla Stack, and her husband, Dave, of Denver, Brenda Zickuhr, and her husband, Tom, of Wichita, Kan., Alan Lubkeman, and his wife, Paula, of Sheffield, Steve Lubkeman, and his wife, Marie, of Rockwell, and Julie Gustafson, and her husband, Dan, of Des Moines; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Wayne William in infancy; two sisters and one brother.

Philip Schmidt Jr.

MASON CITY — Philip Schmidt Jr., 86, of San Jose, Calif., died Sunday (Nov. 23, 1997) in San Jose.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Other funeral arrangements are pending.

L. Enid Buss

MASON CITY — L. Enid Buss, 80, of Des Moines, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at a Des Moines Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where other funeral arrangements are pending at this time.

Hazel L. Platt

ALGONA — Hazel L. Platt, 92, died Friday (Nov. 28, 1997) at Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Webb officiating.

Visitation will be after 7:30 p.m. today at the Wilson Funeral Home, and will continue after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Survivors include one son, George Platt of Eagle Rock, Va.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, one son and one brother.

Elmer Paul Kemp

HAMPTON — Elmer Paul Kemp, 70, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home with the Rev. David Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Elmer Paul Kemp was born on Sept. 2, 1927, in Belmond.

Survivors include two daughters, Jenny Terrill of Hampton, and Paula Yaw of Decorah; two sisters, Esther Malzer, of Nebraska City, Neb., and Ruth Meyer of Hampton; one brother, Arthur Kemp of Colome, S.D.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one grandson.

Susan E. Ronquist

NORTHWOOD — Susan E. Ronquist, 37, died Friday ( Nov. 28, 1997) at her home.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home.

Lucille M. Heuer

CHARLES CITY — Funeral services for Lucille M. Heuer, 71, of 204 Brantingham, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with Pastor Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the South Vilmar Cemetery, rural Greene.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church one hour before services.

Lucille Matilda Heuer was born June 9, 1926, in rural Dayton Township, Butler County, a daughter of Edward and Wilhelmina (Schrage) Heuer, and died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

She received her education in the rural Dayton Township Schools and later at the Greene Public Schools. She was employed by the Greene Produce Company, Dralle’s Department Store, and the Variety Store, before moving to Charles City in 1965. She was employed by Townsend Cleaners in Charles City for many years and also cared for the elderly.

Lucille enjoyed the special times with her nieces and nephews, visiting friends, sightseeing and working on crafts. She was baptized on July 4, 1926, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar, and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on May 12, 1940.

Living family members include her brother, Alfred, and his wife, Anna Heuer, of Allison; two sisters; Mylinda Moser of Des Moines, and Lorena Landers of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Heuer; and two sisters, Ella Landers and Leona Landers.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Lucille Heuer Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Elisha Joseph Sokol

MASON CITY — Elisha Joseph Sokol, infant son of Joseph and Christine Sokol of 215 14th St. N.W., died Saturday evening (Nov. 29, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

James C. Ashland

CLEAR LAKE — James C. Ashland, 45, of Opportunity Village, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East in Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

Charles J. Ringus Sr.

MASON CITY — Charles J. Ringus Sr., 73, of 1315 S. Delaware Ave., died Friday night (Nov. 28, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church. Officiating will be the Rev. David Anderson. Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors by the Mason City Memorial Association, of which he served long and faithful.

Fullerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Charles J. Ringus Sr. Memorial Fund.

Charles was born on Aug. 18, 1924, in Mason City, the son of John and Antoinette (Yorkitis) Ringus. He attended school in Mason City. During World War II, Chuck honorably served his country in the Army. He entered the service at Fort Des Moines in 1941, and was discharged at St. Louis, Mo. in 1945. During his service, Chuck received the Bronze Star for his participation in repelling the Japanese in the South Pacific at New Guinea. When he returned to Mason City, he was employed by Interstate Power, where he worked for 40 years as a chief line foreman, retiring in 1984.

Charles was united in marriage to Gladys Kimball on June 22, 1946, in Mason City and to this union were born a son and daughter.

Charles gave of his time as a Scout Master and District Scout Leader in the Winnebago Council. In 1971, he received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award for serving 25 years. He also was a first aid instructor for the American Red Cross and was a baseball coach for the Knights of Columbus baseball program.

He served as the VFW Post 733 Commander where he was a life member and received the All American Post Commander award. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge and American Legion Post 101.

He was inducted into the River City Softball Hall of Fame in 1985.

Chuck was a straightforward man yet had the patience to teach and show his grandchildren many things they could do. During his spare time, he enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and football.

Chuck is survived by his daughter Susan C. and her husband, Bill Wilt, Fremont, Neb; his son, Charles J. Ringus Jr., and his wife, Lana, Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Abby Ringus, Jay Wilt, Jared Ringus and Lexy Wilt. He also is survived by three sisters, Annie Flanagan, and Veda, and her husband, Tony Sintec, all of Chicago, and Josie Maxwell of Newport Richey, Fla.; and three brothers, John and his wife, Hulda, Mason City, Tony of Cedar Keys, Fla., and Alex and his wife, Mayme, of Rosemead, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Nancy Zeman and Helen Burba.

Elsie S. Hudson

ALGONA — Elsie S. Hudson, 86, of 412 W. Kennedy St., Algona, died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Don Seeger, officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Irvington.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.

Elsie S. Hudson was born April 19, 1911, at Irvington.

She is survived by one son, Larry Hudson, Algona; three daughters, Janice Lappin, Algona, Nancy Bollinger, Lone Rock, and Inez Jane Potratz, Algona; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis Egel, Algona, and Paul Egel, Estherville; and one sister, Effie Van Steenburg, Flint, Mich.

She was preceded in death by here parents, husband, one sister, and two brothers.

KANAWHA — John Nikkel, 77, of Kanawha, died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at the Clarion Community Hospital.

Mason City — Eileen B. Cornwell, 92, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at the Fountain West Health Care Center, West Des Moines.

Elisha Joseph Sokol

MASON CITY — Elisha Joseph Sokol, infant son of Joseph and Christine Sokol, 215 14th St. N.W., died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Graveside services are tentatively planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

TITONKA — Vivian F. Dietrich, 79, of Titonka, died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Good Hope Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Merlin Norris, officiating. Burial will be in the Good Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, where other arrangements are incomplete.

Susan E. Ronquist

NORTHWOOD — Susan E. Ronquist, 37, of Northwood, died Friday (Nov. 28, 1997) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Bentz of the First Lutheran Church, officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Susan E. Ronquist was born March 14, 1960 in Emerson, Manitoba, Canada.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Ronquist, Austin, Minn.; one daughter, Desiree Ronquist, Northwood; one son, Jeremy Ronquist, Northwood; four sisters, Cathy Howland, Grafton, N.D., Paula Phelps, Rapid City, S.D., Sharon Brobst, Woodlawn, Calif., and Irene Crawford, Great Falls, Mont.; and two brothers, Don Crawford, Hayward, Wis., and Dale Crawford, Williams, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

 

Myrtle Lynette Oleson

HAMPTON — Myrtle Lynette Oleson, 90, of Hampton, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 1997) at the Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bradford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Tolles, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, rural Dows.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Myrtle Lynette Oleson was born March 22, 1907, in Franklin County.

Survivors include one son, Dwight Oleson, Coulter; one daughter, Sharon Diemer, rural Hampton; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Ulrich, Iowa Falls, and Mildred Baldwin, Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, 11 brothers and sist ers, and one infant granddaughter.

RICEVILLE — L. Patrick Murphy, 73, of Riceville, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Riceville, with the Rev. John Mosier, officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at the Conway Funeral Home, with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.

L Patrick Murphy was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Dunlap.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, Riceville; one daughter, Lynda Foster, of Riceville; two sons, Thomas Murphy and Timothy Murphy, both of Ruthven; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, William Murphy, Oelwein; and two sisters, Kathleen Heller, Dunlap and Mary Wilke, Omaha, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, three brothers, and one sister.

Robert E. Ellefson

ALGONA — Robert E. Ellefson, 75, of 615 West Call St., died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Philip Webb, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by the American Legion Hagg-Turner Post #90 and V.F.W. Post. #2541.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.

Robert E. Ellefson was born Feb. 20, 1922, in Thompson.

Survivors include one daughter, Vyda Johnson Bridwell, Poynette, Wis.; two sons, Robert Ellefson, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Thomas Ellefson, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Sidney Ellefson, Algona; and one sister, Darlene Sweet, East St. Louis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and his parents.

Arthur L. Graham

RAKE — Funeral services for Arthur L. Graham, 55, of Rake, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, in Rake, with Pastor Jennifer Edinger, officiating. Burial will be in the West Cemetery, Rake.

Mr. Graham died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at the United Hospital, Blue Earth, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Patton Funeral Home, 218 West Sixth St., Blue Earth, Minn. 56013, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Arthur Lee Graham was born Oct. 10, 1942 in Algona, Iowa, the son of Dwight and Olga (Holm) Graham.

He attended school in Titonka, Iowa. He did farm work for a short time.

He married Ruth Sankey on Aug. 19, 1965, in Blue Earth, Minn.

He was employed at Forest City at Foresters and Winnebago Industries. He was presently employed in the maintenance department of Seneca Foods, in Blue Earth.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Graham, Rake; three sons, Ronald Graham and his wife, Lori, Fort Collins, Colo., Mark Graham and his wife, Michelle, Mankato, Minn., and David Graham, Iowa City; three granddaughters; one sister, LaVonne Runkle, Humboldt, Iowa; and his mother-in-law, Waneta Sankey, Winnebago, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one infant brother.

 

James ‘Jim’ C. Ashland

CLEAR LAKE — James "Jim" C. Ashland, 45, of 601 12th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.; and then one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

The family requests memorials be made to the James C. Ashland Memorial Fund; Brain-Injured Waiver Program, Opportunity Village, Clear Lake, Iowa.

Jim was born Oct. 20, 1952, the son of Virgil C. And Marian (Casperson) Ashland in Mason City, Iowa. Jim graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1971.

Jim farmed with his family, until an accident in July of 1972, which permanently disabled him.

Jim had recently returned to the Clear Lake area through a new grant program, "Brain Injured Waiver" at Opportunity. He really enjoyed being able to move back to Clear Lake and to live on his own. Jim was known for his sense of humor.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Christopher and Jeremy Ashland, Ventura; his stepfather, Jay Grimm, Clear Lake; two sisters, Susan Hrubes, Woodbridge, Va., and Jane Ashland, Clear Lake; two brothers, Tom Ashland and Tim Ashland, both of Clear Lake, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Ashland and Marian Caspersen Ashland Grimm; maternal grandparents, Paul and Mary Caspersen; and paternal grandparents, Chris and Vera Ashland.

Ruth B. McDonald

MASON CITY — Ruth B. McDonald, 95, of 302 Second St. N. E., formerly of 408 S. Tennessee Place, Apt. 3, died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Doug Anderson, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Ruth B. McDonald was born March 16, 1902 at Ridgeway, Mo., the daughter of Virgil E. And Savilla (Cutler) Eyerly.

The family moved to Earlham, Iowa and there Ruth attended ad received her education at Earlham Public Schools. She later graduated from the University of Iowa and taught school in Earlham and Perry.

Ruth married True McDonald on Oct. 2, 1932 at Earlham. The couple lived in Lewis, Iowa until 1937, when they moved to Mason City. Ruth continued to teach as a substitute.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mason City, a charter member of the Minerva Study Club, past president of the Mason City PTA Council, and past president of the Garfield PTA.

Survivors include her son, Roscoe McDonald and his wife, Sharon, New Hampton; four grandchildren, Lori Gorman and her husband, Mike, Iowa City; Pam Mahoney and her husband, Dennis, Oakdale, Minn.; Brian McDonald and his wife, Niki, Eagan, Minn., and Cory McDonald and his wife, Shelly, New Hampton; six great-grandchildren, Zachary and Tyler Gorman; Brady and Erica Mahoney; and Whitley and Cole McDonald.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, True on April 13, 1989; and one brother, Ross.

 

Dorothy Theresa Goetz

MASON CITY — Dorothy Theresa Goetz, 87, of 304 Third St. N.E., died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Wesley.

Visitation will begin after 4:30 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a 7 p.m. Scriptural prayer service.

Dorothy Theresa Goetz was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Wesley, daughter of John and Mary (Bruer) Goetz.

She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy, Milwaukee, Wis., in 1927 and attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minn.

Dorothy lived in Wisconsin from 1945 until 1970. Since then she has lived in Mason City.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Clara Goetz and Helen Johnson; and seven brothers, George, Leo, Joseph, Henry, John, Michael and Fred Goetz.

MASON CITY — L. Enid Buss, 80, of 4111 Ingersoll, Des Moines, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at the Des Moines General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Rick Eichenlaub of First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, and until time of services on Wednesday.

L Enid Buss was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Lehigh, Iowa, the daughter of William H. And Ella L. (Ford) Bryant.

Enid moved to Mason City in the early 1940’s and resided here until 1987 when she moved to Des Moines. While in Mason City, Enid was a member of the First Christian Church, the Moose Lodge and the Am Vets.

She enjoyed bowling and playing cards.

Survivors include one son, Bryan M. Doty, of Des Moines; two sisters, Mildred Livingston and her husband, Ralph, of Mason City, and Clarice Christensen and her husband, John, of Weslaco, Texas; five brothers, William H. Joseph C. Kempf

MASON CITY — Joseph C. Kempf, 66, of 4 S. Willowgreen Court, died Monday, (Nov. 24, 1997), at Sarasota, Fla.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Telephone Reassurance Program, Good Shepherd Health Care Center, 302 Second St. N.E., Mason City, Iowa 50401.

Joe was born June 16, 1931, at Ashley, N. D., a son of Gust and Ida (Schmidt) Kempf. He married Rosanne Lansing, Sept. 15, 1979, at Mason City.

He attended rural school near Aberdeen, S.D. Joe owned and operated nursing homes in Idaho and South Dakota for several years. He served as president of the Idaho Nursing Home Association and on the Idaho State Hospital Board from 1961 to 1965.

A resident of Mason City since 1972, Joe initially served as executive director of Good Shepherd Geriatric Center. He served as the chief administrator for Good Shepherd for 24 years before serving as a consultant during his final year at Iowa's largest nursing home.

In Iowa, Kempf served as vice president and as district president of the Iowa Health Care Association. He was also the chairman of Iowa's Peer Review Team.

Joe loved to fish. He also enjoyed golfing and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Rosanne Kempf, Mason City; one son, Greg Kempf, Millersburg, Ohio; one daughter, Vickielynn Kurle, Hastings, Minn.; four grandchildren, Charles Joseph Kurle, Joseph Karl Kurle, Caroline Ann Kempf and Hannah Leah Kempf; three brothers, Gust Kempf Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Harley Kempf, Minneapolis, Minn., and Roy Kempf, North Platte, Neb.; three sisters, Edna Hanson, Minneapolis, Minn., Ella Schumacher, Minneapolis, Minn., and Jeannie Walch, Lake Elsinore, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul and Herbert Kempf; and one sister, Violet, in infancy.

 

Earl Herbert Pilgrim

MASON CITY — Earl Herbert Pilgrim, 80, of 830 S. Fifth St., Osage, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Jerry Newland of the Osage First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 9:30 a.m. Thursday until time of services at the funeral chapel.

Earl Herbert Pilgrim was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Osage, son of William and Ruth (Bigelow) Pilgrim. He married Mary Francis Galkin on Sept. 5, 1953, in Mason City.

Earl grew up in the Osage area and worked on area farms. He worked at Mercy Hospital for 13 years until he and his family moved to Rockford where he worked for Trenttian's Hatchery until retiring in 1978.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Pilgrim and his wife, Karri, Ewa Beach, Hawaii; two grandchildren, Aaron Michael and Nicholas Adam Pilgrim, both of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; one sister, Wildora Merrill, Osage; and one niece, Betty Jepsen and her husband, Larry, Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Maurice Pilgrim.

 

Grace Tinkey

ALEXANDER — Grace Tinkey, 97, of Alexander, died Tuesday (Dec. 2, 1997) at the Belmond Health Care Center, Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Alexander, with the Rev. James Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

She was born Aug. 28, 1900, in rural Alexander, Iowa, the daughter of Peter H. And Katherina (Bos) Pals. She attended rural schools and was united in marriage to William H. Tinkey on Feb. 26, 1919, at Alexander.

They made their home in Alexander, except for three years spent farming in Osterdock, Iowa, in the early 20's. They returned to Alexander and owned and operated the Creamery in Alexander for many years.

Grace raised six children during the Depression and was very family oriented.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alexander, United Methodist Women and the Cemetery Society.

After the death of her husband, she continued to live in Alexander until 1990, when she entered the Belmond Health Care Center.

Grateful for having shared her life are daughters, Dilene Orpen, of Northwood; Lois Bryan, of Garner; Mrs. John (Loraine) Halfwassen, of Belmond; and Mrs. Marvin (Jollene) Jaacks, of Alexander; son, Delbert Tinkey and his wife, Mardell, of Coralville; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Pete Pals Jr., of Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; son, Loren; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters and four brothers.

MASON CITY — Philip Schmidt Jr., 86, of 1821 Coastland Ave., San Jose, Calif., died Nov. 23, 1997 at the Almaden Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson, of St. James Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, Iowa.

Philip Schmidt Jr was born Sept. 4, 1911, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Philip and Katherine (Zeiher) Schmidt Sr.

Philip was raised in Mason City and attended Mason City High School and St. James Lutheran Church.

Philip married Rosie Peterson of Clear Lake on Feb. 20, 1945, in Seattle, Wash. They spent most of their married life in San Jose, Calif., where he was a road worker for Santa Clara County.

Philip retired in 1973 and his wife, Rosie, died in 1992.

He is survived by one brother, Jacob Schmidt, Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Eleanor Dodds, Oakdale, Minn., and Ada Barendregt, Belen, New Mexico; one niece; and six nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Rosie.

 

Elsbeth 'Betty' Minnie Lettow

STORY CITY — Elsbeth "Betty" Minnie Lettow, 91, of Story City, died Tuesday (Dec. 2, 1997) at the Bethany Manor, of complications from Alzheimers Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Buckeye. Burial will be in the Buckeye Cemetery, Buckeye.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at the Bethany Manor Chapel, Story City, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Bethany Manor Chapel.

She was born June 23, 1906, in rural Hubbard, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Maronn) Zoske.

She married Gustav Lettow on Feb. 26, 1941, in Hubbard. He died Feb. 9, 1997. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Buckeye.

She is survived by a son, Gil Lettow and his wife, Pam, of Mason City; a daughter, Daneice Hage and her husband, Ron, of Muscatine; five grandchildren, Todd Lettow and his wife, Bonnie; Lori Moritz and her husband, Mike; Jennifer Custer and her husband, Kevin; and Scott and Time Hage; three great-grandchildren, Erin Lettow, Mitchell Lettow and McKenna Moritz; and five sisters, Frances Winter, Hubbard, Margaret Winter, Hubbard, Minnie Timm, Webster City, Erna Heinzroth, Alden, and Martha Wolf, Hampton.

Bernice 'Bun' Majewski

CHARLES CITY — A Funeral Mass for Bernice "Bun" Majewski, 93, of 44 S. Cedar Terrace, Charles City, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan and Monsignor Stanley Hayek officiating. Burial will in the St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, in Greene, where there will be a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Bernice Bertha Meek was born Jan. 8, 1904, in Pleasant Grove, Floyd County, a daughter of Charles and May (Willis) Meek and died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, in Charles City.

She received her education in the Pleasant Grove Schools and attended the Greene High School.

On Nov. 26, 1924, she was united in marriage to James Joseph Majewski at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene.

They started farming near Elma, where they remained for three years before returning to Greene, where they farmed north of town.

In 1959, they retired and moved into Greene. Mr. Majewski died on March 29, 1968. In January of 1978, she moved to Charles City to be near her family.

Bun enjoyed knitting and crocheting and giving what she made to family and friends. She considered herself a mother hen, one who enjoyed baby sitting for her family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards and could play the piano and could not read a note of music.

She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene and a present member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors.

Living family members include her daughter, Cleo and her husband, Martin Jones, of Charles City; two granddaughters, Malinda and her husband, Doug Welton, of Charles City; Tara Lane, of Nashua; eight great-grandchildren; Jim, Jennifer, Meredith and Nathaniel Welton, Heather, Kasey, Heidi and Kyle Lane.

She was preceded in death by per parents; husband; three sisters, Jesse Franke, Sadie Majewski, Lucy Moser; and one brother, Elmer "Pete" Meek.

Hertha Fleischer

ST. ANSGAR — Hertha Fleishcer, 91, of Winterset, formerly of St. Ansgar, died Monday (Dec. 1, 1997) at Madison County Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Schroeder & Sites funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.

Hertha was born on Nov. 11, 1906, in Myrtle, Minn., to Paul and Martha (Behl) Fleischer. Hertha's parents died when she was quite young and her brothers and sisters were sent to Lutheran Orphanage in Waverly where they stayed until they were adults.

Hertha worked briefly in Des Moines before moving to Oak Park, Illinois. She was employed by the Federal Railroad Retirement Board for more than 20 years as a switchboard operator, retiring in 1972.

Hertha moved to Brooklyn Park, Minn., then to St. Ansgar and later to Austin, Minn. She moved to Winterset two years ago, where she lived at the Country Haven Retirement Home.

Hertha is survived by three nieces, three nephews, several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents; two sisters, Adella and Lila; three brothers, Alfred (a past resident of Wells, Minn.), Leonard and Maynard; and one great nephew.

Jake P. Funk Jr was born October 11, 1911, in Mason City, the son of Jacob and Louise (Schmidt) Funk.

In 1964 he was united in marriage to Margaret Luna, at the Baptist Church in Albert Lea, Minn.

He was employed by the Armour plant for 48 years and after his retirement there, was employed by the Mason City Police Department as a parking attendant for two and a half years.

Jake loved playing softball. He entered the River City Softball Hall of Fame in 1993. He also enjoyed watching wrestling and football on television, and reading.

He was a member of the Mason City Baptist church for 40 years and served as an usher at the church for many years. He also was a member of the Hispanic American Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Funk, Manly; one son, Dennis Funk, Santa Rosa, Calif.; five stepchildren, Gloria Fielder and her husband Jim, Northwood; Clarence Mayo and his wife Denise, Manly; Tony Mayo, Texas; Felix Mayo and his wife Jolene, Manly; Lucinda Bryant and her husband Dale, Huxley; ten grandchildren; three step grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Funk and Fritz Funk, both of Mason City; and Philip Funk, Marquette, Minn.; three sisters, Betty Funk, Mason City; Mary Jane Allen and her husband, Jesse, Plymouth; Regina Ackerson and her husband, Robert, Waterloo; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She graduated from Independence High School in 1923 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

On June 28, 1928, Eileen married Charles E. Cornwell in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. That same year the Cornwell's moved to Mason City.

Eileen was a member of First United Methodist Church, PEO Chapter DZ, Chautaugua Study Club, KB Church Circle and the Queen Rebekah Lodge.

In 1995, Eileen moved to Heritage Court in West Des Moines to be closer to her family.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Edward Cornwell and his wife, Frances, of Bella Vista, Ark.; one daughter, Jean Ann Middleton and husband, Ralph, of Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Suzanne Cornwell, of Des Moines; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson, Paul; one son, Grant Charles; and two infant children.

CLEAR LAKE — Marilyn Golien, 52, of 300 S. Third St., died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 1997) at home.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

BRITT — Harold L. Sankey, 69, of Britt, died Tuesday (Dec. 2, 1997) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. James A. Mattson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Ewing funeral home and one hour prior to services.

CHARLES CITY — Lois Mae Nixt, 63, of 1000 Terrace Rd, died Thursday (Dec. 4, 1997) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Faith Bible Chapel in Charles City, with the Rev. Arthur Wagner, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Roseville, rural Marble Rock.

Hazel Rebecca Ellingson

NORTHWOOD — Hazel Rebecca Ellingson, 87, of Northwood died Thursday (Dec. 4, 1997) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until time of services Saturday at the church.

The family of Hazel Rebecca Ellingson has requested that memorial contributions be made to First Lutheran Church in Northwood, or the Lutheran Retirement Home in her memory.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Rebecca Ellingson was born Aug. 10, 1910, in Freeborn County, Minn., the daughter of Glade and Mathilda (Hanson) Jackson.

She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Lutheran Church in Hayward, Minn. She attended and received her education in the Freeborn County School system.

She was united in marriage to Walter Ellingson on June 12, 1927, in Austin, Minn. He preceded her in death in 1983. After her marriage, she became a Northwood resident and lived in her home until Oct. 20, 1992, when she became a resident at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and was active in ladies aid and church circles in her early membership years. Homemaking, baking and being with her family and friends was her great love and enjoyment.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, LaVonne Flatness and her husband, Alton, of Northwood, and Donna Wignes of Edina, Minn.; two grandsons, Gary Wignes and his wife, Lisa, of Edina, Minn., and Wayne Wignes and his wife, Mary, of Bartlet, Ill.; one great-granddaughter, Jacqueline Rebecca Wignes of Edina, Minn.; and one great-grandson, Michael John Wignes, also of Edina, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, Walter, she also was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Stanley Wignes; three sisters, Minnie Olson, Gladys Pilatos and Lela Thompson; and four brothers, Calvin, Vernie, Arthur and Glenn Jackson.

Chrystal Kruse

BURT — Chrystal B. Kruse, 68, of Burt, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

There will be a memorial service held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural George. Burial will be in the George Iowa Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Bancroft.

Chrystal Kruse was born on Dec. 25, 1928, in Boyden.

Delma E. Duncan

CHARLES CITY — Delma E. Duncan, 74, of Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home and formerly of Bassett, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 1997) at the nursing home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the Rev. Jim McDonald of Bethany Alliance Church officiating. Burial will be in the Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield Township, rural Bassett.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Delma Elizabeth Duncan was born July 15, 1923, in Deerfield Township, rural Bassett.

Survivors include two brothers, Bill Duncan of Ionia, and Charles Duncan of West Concord, Minn.; a sister, Faith Lockey of Bassett; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Elmer Kubly was born Sept. 27, 1904, on a farm north of Renwick.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor of LuVerne; two sons, Keith Kubly of Western Springs, Ill., and Dale Kubly of Chesterfield, Mo.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grand daughter and one sister.

Mabel Clapp

RICEVILLE — Mabel Clapp, 98, of Riceville, died Thursday (Dec. 4, 1997) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Mabel was born on Dec. 8, 1898, in Lakota.

Marilyn Margaret Golien

CLEAR LAKE — Mrs. Marilyn Margaret Golien, 52, of 300 S. Third St., died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

The family suggests memorials to the Marilyn Margaret Golien Memorial Fund.

Marilyn was born July 22, 1945, in Waverly, the daughter of Howard and Gertrude (Schoentag) Parmely.

She graduated from Lamont High School in 1963, and then attended Mason City Junior Colllege and Buena Vista College.

On June 18, 1966, she was united in marriage to Leslie Golien, at the United Methodist Church in Lamont. The couple lived in Marshalltown for six months before moving to Muscatine in 1967, where Marilyn worked for the Bangdad Corp. as a bookkeeper. They moved to Clear Lake in 1970.

In 1980, Marilyn started an upholstery business out of her home and made artistic pillows for people. In 1985, she was employed by Quality Quick Print and Simmering-Cory. She was the bookkeeper, and later manager of the Milepost 194 Truck Stop. She later worked at Neal Cleaners and Hewitt Wholesale.

Marilyn enjoyed gardening, interior decorating, flower arranging and shopping. One of her favorite hang-outs was Hobby Lobby. She especially loved being with her family and having coffee with friends.

She is survived by her husband, Leslie Golien, Clear Lake; a daughter, Michaela Cookman and her husband, Todd, and their two children, Colton and Tanner, Clear Lake; a son, Christopher Golien, Clear Lake, and his special friend, Lisa Johnson, of Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters, Claudia Morris and her husband, Elgin, of Clear Lake, Carolyn Streicher and her husband, Larry, of Arlington, Joan Wilker and her husband, Jim, of Garnavillo, and Debra Sizer and her husband, Jeff, of Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, John Parmely and his wife, Betty, of Dundee; a sister-in-law, Connie Roloff and her husband, John, of Marietta, Ga.; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Maybelle and Lester Golien; and an infant son, Robert Golien.

Raymond Tilton Cook

ALGONA — Raymond Tilton Cook, 86, of 323 N. Garfield St., died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 1997) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Raymond Cook was born May 11, 1911, in Hobarton.

Alma Engesser was born Jan. 30, 1907, in South Dakota.

Melvin Edward Francis was born Jan. 30, 1918, in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Verna was born Dec. 1, 1944, in Iowa Falls.
