Irene Frances Olson

LELAND — Irene Frances Olson, 77, formerly of Leland, died Sunday (Dec. 14, 1997) at Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christenson and the Rev. Elwin Walvatne officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Irene Frances Olson, daughter of Elmer and Frances (Classon) Olson, was born July 22, 1920, on a farm near Leland, Iowa, and grew to womanhood there.

On July 25, 1939 at the age of 19, she entered the Woodward State Hospital School and had spent the past 58 years there.

Irene was baptized at North Prairie Lutheran Church, near Leland.

She is survived by her sister, Mavis, and husband, Jerome Rognes, of Lake Mills; her brother, Royden, and wife, Virginia Olson, of Des Moines; her brother, Royden, and wife, Virginia Olson, of Des Moines; five nieces; five nephews; three stepnieces; one stepnephew; three grandnieces; three grandnephews; and one stepgrandnephew.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents, Elmer and F. Pearl (Classon) Olson.

Irene Millard

MASON CITY — Irene Millard, 73, of 920 Briarstone Drive S.W., died Monday (Dec. 15, 1997) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

Savannah Sue Manley

VENTURA — Savannah Sue Manley, 7-month-old daughter of Tom and Angela Manley of Ventura, died Sunday (Dec. 14, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery north of Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner.

Savannah Sue Manley was born May 15, 1997, at Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Tom E. and Angela K. Manley.

She is survived by her parents, Tom and Angela Manley, of Ventura; a brother, Travis Wayne Manley, and a sister, Samantha Flo Manley, both of Ventura; maternal grandparents, Jan Thomas, Palm Springs, Calif., and Jerry Flo, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; paternal grandparents, Bill and Linda Manley, of Gooding, Idaho; maternal great-grandparents, Lester and Anna Flo of Lake Mills and John and Arelly Badje of Albert Lea, Minn.; paternal great-grandparents, Delores Clawson, of Twin Falls, Idaho; and many aunts and uncles.

Gladys M. Eggleston

MASON CITY — Gladys M. Eggleston, 90, a long-time resident of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, died Monday (Dec. 15, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.

Lynn ‘Chappie’ Knoll

BELMOND — Lynn "Chappie" Knoll, 73, died Saturday (Dec. 13, 1997) in his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xa vier Catholic Church with the Rev. John Paisley officiating. Burial with military rites at graveside will be in the St. Francis Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Tenold Funeral Home, with a 2:30 p.m. parish rosary and a private family prayer service at 7 p.m.

Lynn "Chappie" Knoll was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Kanawha.

Survivors include his wife, Donna, Belmond; 14 children, Mike Knoll, Ossining, N.Y.; Jim Knoll, Corpus Christi, Texas; Mary Luick, Belmond; Paul Knoll, Anaheim, Calif.; John Knoll, Belmond; Dennis Knoll, Catlin Ill.; Kathryn Cahill, Danville, Ill.; Patrice Whitty, Lancaster, Wis., Jeanie McWhorter, Beeville, Texas.; Kevin Knoll, Belmond; Elizabeth Barrett, Belmond; Angela Olson, Belmond; Sherrie Kunecki, Lamoni; and Matthew Knoll, Wesley; 51 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gene Severson, Sioux City.

He was preceded in death be his parents, one sister and four grandchildren.

Mildred G. Quinlan

NORA SPRINGS — Mildred G. Quinlan, 88, of 216 N. Hawkeye St., Nora Springs, died Sunday (Dec. 14, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient, Mason City. She recently resided at the Lake Mills Care Center where she had received loving and tender care.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye St., with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers of Shellrock Valley United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, and will continue until time of services on Wednesday.

Mildred G. Quinlan was born Oct. 7, 1909, in Riverton Township, Floyd County, daughter of Roscoe and Nellie (Boyd) Zimmerman, the fourth of sixth children.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Deerfield Methodist Church.

She graduated from Colwell High School and from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She then taught in the Chickasaw County School and Bassett school for eight years.

On Oct. 12, 1935, she was united in marriage to William R. Quinlan at Waverly. Three daughters were born to this union.

Mildred was a devoted housewife and mother. She will be remembered for her kind and caring ways. Her great love was spending time with family, cooking and baking. Her homemade bread was a family favorite. She also helped with her husband’s honey business.

A life-long member of the Methodist Church, Mildred attained the age of 88 years, two months and seven days.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 62 years, William Quinlan; one daughter and son-in-law, Daniel and Marian Lenz of Forest City; a brother-in-law, Erich Mannette of San Rafael, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Marie Zimmerman, of Nashua; and seven nieces and nephews.

She went home to be with Jesus and those loved ones who preceded her in death: her parents, Roscoe and Nellie Zimmerman; a special aunt and uncle, Ray and Mabel Duncan; five brothers and sisters and their spouses, Farrold and Bertha Zimmerman, Mabel Mannetter, Maynard and Francis Zimmerman, Neva and Walter Schwyhart and Virgil (Bud) and Ilda Zimmerman; two infant daughters; and one nephew.

Irene G. Millard

MASON CITY — Irene G. Millard, 73, of 920 Briarstone Drive, died Monday (Dec. 15, 1997) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Her body was cremated.

A private memorial service for relatives will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank of the Grace United Methodist Church, Floyd, officiating. Inurnment at Memorial Park Cemetery will follow the services on Friday.

Irene's family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel.

Irene G. Millard was born July 8, 1924, in Cerro Gordo County, the twin daughter of John and Neva (Homes) Purviance.

She attended rural school and graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1941.

On Sept. 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Warren Millard.

They started farming north of Clear Lake in 1942. They farmed west of Manly, near Northwood, and 21 years near Floyd.

In 1984 they retired and moved to Mason City. Irene enjoyed playing cards, bowling, dancing and working in her flower gardens. She has won many ribbons for her flower arrangements at area flower shows.

She was a charter member of the Green Thumb Garden Club of Northwood. She was active in her church in Northwood and later at the Floyd Grace United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Millard, Mason City; two sons, Russell J. Millard and his wife, Sharon, Odessa, Fla.; Monte J. Millard and his wife, Lora, Charles City; one daughter, Rebecca J. Zimmer, Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren; Jody Smith, Ashland, Neb.; Nicole and Nathan Millard , Charles City; Chester, Oliver and Maisy Zimmer, Tampa, Fla.; four sisters, Clara Ball, Prescott, Ariz.; Opal Coffin, Clear Lake; Lola Cook, Hudson, Wis.; and a twin sister, Allene Peterson, Clear Lake; one brother, Jesse Purviance, Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, Floyd and Clyde Purviance; and one grandchild, Jon Millard.

Pauline Edith Kroneman

ST. ANSGAR — Pauline Edith Kroneman, 80, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (Dec. 16, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, with the Rev. Rose Marie Lewis officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Pauline Edith Thompson was born at Plainfield, Iowa, on March 16, 1917, to Eugene Ellsworth Thompson and Lucille Holmes Thompson.

She was baptized into the Christian faith on Dec. 8, 1940, (which 50 years later became the same birthdate as her one granddaughter) at St. John's Lutheran Church and was also confirmed then by Pastor F.C. Ide.

In 1919, the family moved to a farm 1½ miles northeast of St. Ansgar, Iowa. She attended Spring Valley rural school graduating from St. Ansgar High School in 1934.

Pauline then graduated from St. Anns Business College in LeSueur, Minn.

She was united in marriage to Alvin George Kroneman on April 14, 1940, at St. John's Lutheran Church, bringing her to the life she loved of farming.

As a youngster Pauline followed in her fathers footsteps learning to love the great outdoors and love of animals and nature. This love of land was passed on to their only son, Allan Dean Kroneman.

Alvin and Pauline farmed in Rock Township for nearly 40 years with special interest in cattle.

She served the county as 4-H Leader of the "Core Girls" for 15 years. Showing cattle at State Fair was a highlight for many years.

Upon retirement in 1976, they built a home in St. Ansgar. Pauline took great pride in her retirement years in maintaining well groomed flower beds and landscaping at her home and around town.

Restoration and preservation of nature were an important part of her life. You could see her feeding her birds and then watching them with binoculars.

She was a member of the Garden Club, Womens Club, served on the days of elections and served as a member of the Osage Faith Home Board.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin, of St. Ansgar; one child, Allan and his wife, Joann; and one granddaughter, Jennie Jo Kroneman, all of rural Clear Lake; one sister, Mrs. John (Frances) Patterson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sherwood Charles Loops

DES MOINES — Sherwood Charles Loops, 85, of 3838 Tiffin, Des Moines, died Sunday (Dec. 14, 1997) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines, from injuries in a car/pedestrian accident.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Grandview Baptist Church, Des Moines. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines.

Memorials may be given to the Sherwood Loops Memorial for Underprivileged Children to attend the Iowa Regular Baptist Church.

Sherwood Charles Loops was born in Austin County. He had lived in Des Moines since 1984.

From 1984 until present, Mr. Loops was custodian at Grandview Park Baptist Church/School. He was the former Iowa Regular Baptist Camp caretaker for 34 years in Ventura.

He was a member of the Grandview Park Baptist Church, and a veteran of World War II, U.S. Army, 8th Air Corps.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria L. Loops, of Des Moines; son, Herb Loops, of North Liberty; son, Donald Loops, of Des Moines; son, David Loops, of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; and one brother, Walter L. Loops, of Cottonwood, Ariz.

Magda G. Zrostlik

BRITT — Magda G. Zrostlik, 76, died Saturday (Dec. 13, 1997) at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation was held after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ewing Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to services at the church. A parish wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Magda G. Zrostlik was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Germany.

Survivors include her husband Sylvester, Britt; three daughters, Joan Enriquez, Des Moines, Janice Zrostlik, Des Moines, and Betty Harms, Burt; three sons, Robert, Waterloo, Richard, Shell Rock, and James, Korea; one brother Herbert Egts, Waverly; 14 grandchildren and four step-grandchilren; two great grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Gladys M. Eggleston

MASON CITY — Gladys M. Eggleston, 90, a longtime resident of Good Shepherd Nursing Home, died Monday afternoon (Dec. 15, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with Lt. Jon Augenstein, of the Salvation Army officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be held after 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Mason City.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Salvation Army.

Gladys was born in Rock Falls, on Feb. 9, 1907, the daughter of Charles F. And Leona Bell (Frederich) Kinney.

At the age of three, she moved with her family to a farm near Plymouth. She attended school there and graduated with 10 classmates in 1926.

Virgil Eggleston and Gladys were united in marriage on April 5, 1928, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Oliver Wigdahl. They made their life together for the next 54 years in Mason City. In 1982, Virgil preceded her in death.

To their marriage, one daughter was born.

Gladys enjoyed playing "500" card games at the Hanford Hotel with her husband and friends, and her favorite hobby was spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was very detail-oriented kept pace with current events by reading newspapers and magazines. She was also a task master in helping her grandson study for school.

Her fond memories will be remembered and cherished by her grandson, Leroy D. and his wife, Rose Miller; two great-grandchildren, Lori Ann and Lisa Marie Miller; and three great-great-grandchildren, Adam Christopher, Bailey Charles Miller and Kimberly Ann Greene, all of Clear Lake.

Gladys will be reunited with her parents; her husband, Virgil; her only daughter, LaVonne Miller; and her sister and brother-in-law, Atha and Marcus Tageson in her passing.

Rita M. Lorenz Lass

HAMPTON, Va. — Rita M. Lorenz Lass, 75, of 108 Shenandoah Road, Hampton, Va. 23661, died Tuesday (Dec. 16, 1997) at the Hampton General Hospital.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Hampton, Va. Entombment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.

A Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home Chapel, 4304 Victoria Boulevard, Hampton, Va., with the family receiving friends until 9 p.m.

Rita M. Lorenz Lass was born in Britt, Iowa, on July 16, 1922. On Sept. 7, 1944, she married Alvin P. Lass in Britt.

She had been a Hampton resident for 25 years. Mrs. Lass retired from the Hampton School System after 23 years as a teacher and guidance counselor.

She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Parish and actively participated in volunteer work at St. Francis Nursing Center and Holy Family Retreat House.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Alvin; one son, Rodney Lass, of Monroe City, Mo.; three daughters, Diane Kirchner and her husband, Richard, of Harvard, Ill.; Donna K. Carter and her husband, Julian P. Padowicz, of Stamford, Conn. ; and Debra J. Lass, of New York, N.Y.; as well as seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brothers and their wives, John and Ruth Lorenz, of Palm Desert, Calif.; Norbert and Ann Lorenz, of Covina, Calif.; and her sisters and their husbands, Trudy and Gene Burns, of New Berlin, Wis., Sally and Paul Devine, of Corwith; and Irene and Walter Jackson, of Wagoner, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Phebe Rogers

CLEAR LAKE — Phebe Rogers, 91, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Dec. 14, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, of First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Phebe Rogers was born Aug. 18, 1906, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Ross Richardson and Harriet Adelaide (Rice) Rogers.

Phebe graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1923 and then graduated from Mason City Junior College. She worked for four years as a secretary to the Superintendent of Clear Lake Schools.

Phebe attended Hamilton Business College for nine months and worked for a couple of years in Mason City.

In 1935, Phebe went to Washington, DC, and worked for the government for three years. She then transferred to Chicago, Ill., still working for the Securities and Exchange Commission. While in Washington, she took a night course at George Washington University.

After 15 years in the government, Phebe started working in private industry. She worked for Oxford Ltd. Furniture Company and then worked for Curtis Candy Company, a subsidiary of Standard Brands and then of Nabisco Brands.

She retired from Curtis Candy Company in 1971 and returned to Clear Lake. Phebe enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and bowling.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, the Crescent Club; the Hi-Lo Bridge Club and Monday Bridge Club; and the NARFE Organization (National Association of Federal Employees).

Survivors include one niece, Mary Marshall and her husband, Gary, Canoga Park, Calif.; two nephews, Richard Rogers, Clear Lake; and John Rogers and his wife, June, Burlington; one sister-in-law, Darlene Rogers, Clear Lake; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Kingsley Rogers.

Ethel C. Rovn

ALGONA — Ethel C. Rovn, 90, 710 Park Avenue, Algona, died Tuesday (Dec. 16, 1997) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Daniel Mangler officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.

Ethel C. Rovn was born June 6, 1907, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Survivors include her husband, Brady G. Rovn, of Algona; two daughters, Judy Hurn, of Algona, and Jean Allen, of Spirit Lake; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant sister.

Elmer 'Bill' W. Schwartz

GARNER — Elmer "Bill" W. Schwartz, 89, of Garner, died Monday (Dec. 15, 1997) at the Concord Care Center.

There will be no services. The body was cremated. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, is in charge of arrangements.

Elmer "Bill" W. Schwartz was born April 4, 1908, at Klemme.

He is survived by several nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Marvin Van Every

MASON CITY — Marvin Van Every, 72, of Livingston, Texas, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 15, 1997) at the Veterans Hospital, Houston, Texas.

Marvin O. Van Every

MASON CITY — Marvin O. Van Every, 72, of 8619 FM 2457, Livingston, Texas, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 15, 1997) at the Veterans Hospital, Houston, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Marvin O. Van Every was born March 16, 1925 at Sheffield, the son of Clinton E. And Reka (Gerdes) Van Every. He received his education at Mason City schools.

On Nov. 11, 1944, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Wagner at Mason City.

Marvin was employed at Armour Foods for several years, retiring in 1961.

He was the president of the Armour Retired Persons Club for nine years.

Since 1976, Marvin and his wife, Dorothy, have spent their winters in Livingston, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Van Every, Livingston, Texas; seven children, Richard Van Every, of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; Danny Van Every and his wife, Janice, Houston, Texas; Gary Van Every and his wife, Allyn, Long Beach, Calif.; Jan Dee Stigers and her husband, David, Livingston, Texas; Angela Seals and her special friend, Randy, Meservey; Mark Van Every and his wife, Gwen, Lewisville, Texas; Marla Nail and her husband, Troy, Meservey; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Emery Van Every, Rockaway Beach, Mo.; two sisters, Tena Nelson, Houston, Texas; and Shirley Vermace and her husband, Bob, Iowa City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one daughter, one son, and two grandsons.

BANCROFT — JoAnn Nemmers, 64, of Bancroft, died Tuesday (Dec. 16, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Thomas and the Rev. Frank Nemmers officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with a 3 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas-Altar Society Rosary, and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.

JoAnn Nemmers was born on Feb. 12, 1933, in Algona.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence, Bancroft; five sons, David Nemmers, of Burt; Michael Nemmers and Steven Nemmers, both of Bancroft; Craig Nemmers, of Armstrong; and Robert Nemmers, Swea City; four daughters, Sharon Thilges, Mesa, Ariz.; Janice Welp, of Urbandale; Barbara Brannen, Waukee; and Cynthia Anderson, Algona; 22 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

CLARION — Freeman D. Gates, 70, of Clarion, died Tuesday (Dec. 16, 1997) at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.

Private family services will be held.

Robert E. Burger was born Feb. 18, 1925, in Eagle Grove.

Vernon Christian Nelson

NORTHWOOD — Vernon Christian Nelson, 87, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Dec. 17, 1997) at his home in Northwood.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Jensen, officiating.

Vernon Christian Nelson was born April 9, 1910, in Ringsted, Iowa, to Alfred and Nelsine Nelson.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Kirkeved Lutheran Church.

Vernon along with his father, mother, three brothers and sister moved to New Underwood, S.D., and farmed for several years.

Vernon met and married Mary Louise Olson on Feb. 1, 1941, in Sturgis, S.D. Vernon and Louise moved to Biscay, Minn.

Vernon farmed and owned and operated his own garage where he did mechanic work until retiring in 1977.

Vernon enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards and his family.

Survivors include his wife, Louise; daughter, Jean Arrett and her husband, Robert; two granddaughters, Teresa Taylor and her husband, Mark and Mary Arrett and friend, Brian Branstad; four great-grandchildren, Danielle and Rachel Taylor, Joshua and Michael Walker; also brothers, Leo Nelson, of Casper, Wyo.; Merlyn Nelson, Walnut Creek, Calif.; and Ernest Nelson, Lakefield, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Stella Margaret Trimble

The family of Stella Margaret Trimble was born on Dec. 17, 1907, in Garner, the daughter of Jacob John and Ida Elizabeth Viola (Eddy) Becker.

She attended and received her education in the Mason City School System; graduating from Mason City High School in 1927. She also attended and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

After completing her education, she taught school for three years in rural Clear Lake.

She was united in marriage to Roy Elmer Trimble on Feb. 20, 1931, in Albert Lea, Minn. He preceded her in death in 1980.

In the early 1940’s, they moved to Sacramento, Calif., where she stayed while her husband was in the service, moving back to Iowa in 1946, farming in rural Swaledale, before moving to Sacramento, Calif. in 1957, working for the State of California Motor Vehicle Drivers License Division until her retirement in 1969. In 1979, they moved back to Clear Lake.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening and animals.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake and the Clear Lake Rebekah’s Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Robert Trimble and his wife, Donna, of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Jo Stricklan and her husband, Dave, of Southerlin, Ore.; three grandchildren, Tina Marie Trimble, Nadine Rene Abdeen, and Terry Trimble, all of Sacramento, Calif.; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one niece, Luella Bacon and her husband, Carrol, of Osage Beach, Mo.; two nephews, Tom Fretty and his wife, Jean, of Kensett and Jake Fretty and his wife, Bev, of Fairmont, Minn.; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy Elmer Trimble who died in 1980; and one sister, Ruby Fretty.

OSAGE — Paul W. Schmidt, 69, of Osage, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Champion Funeral Home, with the Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank officiating.

The body was donated to the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minn. There will be no visitation.

Paul W. Schmidt was born Aug. 12, 1928, at Osage.

Virgil Clay Noack

CEDAR FALLS — Virgil Clay Noack, 60, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday (Dec. 17, 1997) at his office on the University of Northern Iowa campus, after suffering a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Interment will be in the St. Paulas Cemetery in Guttenberg.

Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Virgil’s name has been established.

Virgil Clay Noack was born March 21, 1937, in Postville, the son of Clay Patrick and Helma Ida (Brandenburg) Noack.

On June 6, 1959, he was united in marriage to Marlene G. McNeilus in Marble Rock.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1959 and a master’s degree in 1964. He taught at New Hartford Community School from 1959 to 1963, then in Spirit Lake until 1967, before joining the UNI faculty where he was an assistant professor in the sociology, anthropology and criminology department.

He taught and coordinated the Junior League’s "Know Your Community" class for more than a decade.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Marlene Noack of Cedar Falls; one son, Steven P., and his wife, Cindy, of Iowa City; one daughter, Susan J. Larson, and her husband, Carter, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one grandson, Michael Clay Noack, of Iowa City; and one sister, Marjorie Schultz, of Postville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy.

Harry I. Nadler

AMES — Harry I. Nadler, 75, of Ames, formerly of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 1997) in Dallas, Texas, of a pulmonary embolism.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, Sioux City, Iowa, with Mr. James Sherman, spiritual leader of the Congregational Beth Shalom Synagogue, officiating. Burial will be in the Independent Farane Cemetery in Sioux City.

There will be no visitation.

Harry I. Nadler was born Sept. 1, 1922, in Sioux City, the son of Joseph and Fannie Nadler.

Harry Nadler served in the United States Air Force.

He owned and operated Harry’s Surplus in Mason City, for approximately 30 years. He was also the owner of Elaines in Mason City.

Mr. Nadler was a resident of Ames for one year, Golden Valley, Minn., for 15 years and Mason City for 35 years.

He was a member of Bnai Brith, Toastmasters, Shriners and Adas Israel Synagogue in Mason City.

Survivors include three sons, James "Jamie" Nadler, of Dallas, Texas; Michael Nadler, of Boca Raton, Fla.; and Barry Nadler, of Ames; three sisters, Toby Gossen, of San Antonio, Texas; Gert Zeplain, of Sioux City; and Pearl Gossen, of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Isadore Nadler of Waterloo; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; and one son, Scott Nadler.

Burial will be in the Silver Lake Lutheran Cemetery in rural Northwood.

Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services on Monday at the chapel.

Clarence M. Breen was born Sept. 28, 1910, in Silver Lake, Iowa, the son of Elling and Minnie (Rue) Breen.

He was baptized by the Rev. Brenna and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation by the Rev. Hans Fosnes at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood.

He attended and received his education in the Silver Lake #6 country school system and graduated from Waldorf Academy in Forest City.

During his life, he farmed on the family farm near Silver Lake.

He was a lifetime member of the Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood and was the church secretary for 19 years. He also was one of the founding directors for the Lutheran Retirement Home and was on the board of directors at the Lutheran Retirement Home for 30 years in Northwood.

Survivors include his brother, Elroy Breen of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arthur Dale Merwin

Arthur Dale Merwin was born on Dec. 31, 1916, at Jasper, Texas, the son of Chauncey and Alice (Eyestone) Merwin.

He attended various schools in Texas before moving to Des Moines in the late 1920s. He moved to Clear Lake in October 1933 and started driving trucks with his dad.

Arthur married Mabel Van Hoosen on June 24, 1939, at Mabel’s home in Clear Lake.

Arthur was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad in 1942 and worked there for 35 years until his retirement in 1978. After this, he drove a school bus.

He enjoyed railroading and traveling and driving his school bus.

He was a member of the Assembly of God, and a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union.

Harold W. ‘Buddy’ Holmes Sr.

MANLY — Harold W. "Buddy" Holmes Sr., 56, of 304 West Walnut, Manly, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Harlan Stenberg and the Rev. Dwight Webster officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Harold W. Holmes Sr. was born Nov. 10, 1941, in Des Moines, son of Harold and Loretta June (Slater) Maupin.

He married Pamela Kibsgaard on June 22, 1975, in East Park in Mason City.

Harold grew up in Des Moines and attended North High School. He was a member of the Des Moines YMCA Swimming and Diving Team from 1951 until 1956.

He worked at Central States Auto Auction for 10 years and then worked for the Rock Island Railroad in Manly. He was also a supervisor for Carroll-George Company in Northwood for four years. He and his wife operated Buddy’s A-One Car Detailing in Osage until his illness.

Harold was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed cleaning cars and he loved spending time with his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Holmes, Manly; five children, Harold Holmes Jr. and his wife, Delia, Northwood; Chezron Anderson and Kim Anderson, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; Rollando Kibsgaard and his wife, Voncile, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Candice Kibsgaard, Manly; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his father, Harold Maupin, Chaplin, Minn.; two brothers, Lawrence Holmes and his wife, Cindy, Rockwell City, and Guy Maupin, Chaplin, Minn.; four sisters, Vaunetta Washington and Toni Williamson, both of Des Moines; Edith Maupin, Chaplin, Minn., and Edith Williams, Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, Richard and Lee Kibsgaard, Manly; his former wives, Vicki Whiteside and Gwen Anderson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
