Lyle I. Brakel, 72, of Charles City, died Thursday (Jan. 25,
1996) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Larry Craig Taylor
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.
Larry Craig Taylor, 48, of Minneapolis, died Sunday (Jan. 21,
1996).
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed
by a reception until 5 p.m. at the Cedar Falls Women's Club in
Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Cremation Society of Minnesota is in
charge of arrangements.
He was a lighting consultant for the University of Minnesota
Energy Efficiency Program. A gifted artist and craftsman of
widely ranging skills and interests, Larry possessed a thirst
for learning and never lacked for projects. He was always up
for a challenge, tenacious to the end, and relished his independent
solutions. He accepted his last challenge of lung cancer with
amazing dignity and serenity. A 1973 graduate of MCAD, his fine
art endeavors included oil painting, sculpture, printmaking,
serigraphy, photography and holography. He enjoyed many outdoor
activities, especially bicycling, archery, camping and fishing.
He was a stereophile and connoisseur of all music and a sensitive,
innocent spirit whose wit, creativity, kindness and generosity
were apppreciated and loved by those who knew him. Children
especially enjoyed his gentle, playful attention. He embellished
a mundane world with his sparkling, intense presence.
He is survived by his loving companion and wife of 26 years,
Kay Von der Linde Taylor; mother and stepfather, Vivian and Charles
Shane of Waterloo, Iowa; sisters, Emily Taylor of Garland, Texas,
and Pamela Taylor and her husband J.D. Rebstock of Gainesville,
Fla., and Cynthia Gomez and her husband, Alex of Campbell, Calif.;
niece, Brittany; nephews, Taylor and Raleigh; maternal aunt,
Ann Fabric of Phoenix, Ariz.; and paternal aunt, Lorraine Fitzpatrick
of Cedar Falls.
He was preceded in death by his father, Loren Taylor.

Rana A. Matzen, 83, of Riceville, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 1996)
at the Stacyville Community Rest Home.

will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Conway Funeral

Rana A. Matzen was born Oct. 19, 1912, in Denmark.
Survivors include two daughters, Eileen Hogman of Garland, Texas,
and Carole Rebholz of San Ramon, Calif.; four grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbert Paulsen of Moline,
Ill.; one sister, Ella Shriver of Flagler Beach, Fla.; and one
half sister, Maria of Denmark.
She was preceded in death by her husband and four sisters.

James `Bud' Miller
WEBSTER CITY
James ``Bud'' Miller, 85, of Webster City, died Wednesday (Jan.
24, 1996) at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the
Foster Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Artrip officiating. Burial
will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home and
will continue until service time on Saturday.
James Cavert Miller, the son of James D. and Bertha Haswell
Miller, was born Feb. 27, 1910, in Webster City. He attended
rural schools. On June 2, 1939, he married Evelyn Roberta Tash
in Webster City. The couple farmed north of Blairsburg from
1939 until 1955, when they moved to their present farm two miles
east of Webster City. He also had a custom corn shelling and
trucking business.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; son and daughter-in-law,
Jim and Judee Miller of Clear Lake; daughter and son-in-law,
Kathie and Bill Ruth of Altoona; grandchildren, Dawn Hejna, Blake
Miller, Jodee Esser, J.D. Miller, Scott Wailes and Tami Wailes;
six great-grandchildren; a sister, Winonah Henry of Webster City;
a brother, Art Miller of Carroll; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell, in infancy;
and a sister, Myra Sylvester.
He was a member of the Church of Christ and a Democratic party
supporter.

Clifford N. Sage
MASON CITY
Clifford N. Sage, 64, of 207 First St. S.E., died Wednesday
(Jan. 24, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First
Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Paul Boostrom
officiating. Following cremation, inurnment will take place
in Waldport, Ore.
There will be no public visitation. Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel,
126 Third St. N.E., is handling arrangements.
Clifford N. Sage was born in Mason City on July 11, 1931, the
son of Clifford and Lucille (Mayo) Sage. He attended school
in Mason City and Richmond, Calif. Following graduation he enlisted
in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1951-1955. He later worked
for Pacific Bell Telephone Co., retiring in 1984. He returned
to Mason City in December 1990.
He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren, repairing
bicycles, taking pictures, boats and antique automobiles.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
He is survived by his loving companion, Elaine Sage of Mason
City; one son, Robert Sage of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Sandra
Duggar and her husband, Joe, of Sacramento, Calif.; two stepdaughters,
Jackie Carpenter and her husband, Richard, and Tammy Treslan,
all of Mason City; four stepsons, Don Sage and his wife, Jessie;
Tom Sage and his wife, Linda; Ron Sage and his wife, Toni; Bryan
Sage and his wife, Carol, all of Mason City; 14 stepgrandchildren;
one step-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Charles Sage and
his wife, Marge, of Placerville, Calif., and Donald Sage of Pacheco,
Calif.; one aunt, Hazelle Tagesen of Mason City; and several
cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gregory
Sage.

Alvina J. Meyer
GARNER
Alvina J. Meyer, 88, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 1996) at North
Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran
Church with the Rev. James I. Lamb and the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick
officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo
Funeral Chapel.
Alvina Johanna Meyer, the daughter of Fred and Maria (Drewes)
Struecker, was born June 9, 1907, on a farm near West Bend.
She attended the Lutheran Parochial School in Whittemore. On
Sept. 26, 1928, she was married to Martin ``Max'' William Meyer
at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Whittemore. In 1931 they moved
from Whittemore to Garner where they lived the rest of their
lives. In the spring of 1987, Alvina moved to Prairie View Apartments
in Garner. She enjoyed her family, friends, quilting and crocheting.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and LWML, in which
she played an active role.
She is survived by her four children, James Meyer and his wife,
Julie, of Garner; the Rev. Edward Meyer and his wife, Melba,
of Conover, N.C.; the Rev. David Meyer and his wife, Vivian,
of Havelock, N.C., and Marie Waddingham and her husband, David,
of Garner; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, James
W. Meyer, II and his wife, Priscilla, and their three children,
Katie, Christopher and Jordan; Julie Trost and her husband, Jeff,
and their three children, Jason, Jill and Jon; Timothy Meyer
and his wife, Heather; Thomas Meyer and his wife, Deb, and their
three children, Melissa, Bryan and Jason; Tamara Riegel and her
husband, Matthew; Susan Kucenski and her husband, Bill, and their
son, Andrew; Sarah Meyer; Kathy Meyer; Shelley Witting and her
husband, Rick; Sheila Sperr and her husband, Keith; Sherry Loftus
and her husband, Mike, and their son, Ryan, and Mark Waddingham
and his wife, Liz, and their daughter, Megan; three sisters-in-law,
Frieda Struecker of Emmetsburg, Ida Struecker and Aleen Struecker,
both of Whittemore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, M.W. ``Maxie'' Meyer
on Dec. 20, 1985; her daughter-in-law, Ruth Meyer, Dec. 10, 1985;
a grandson, John Meyer, July 23, 1990; her parents; and three
brothers, Erwin Struecker, Walter Struecker and Werner Struecker.

Mrs. Ida Constance `Daisy'' Myhr, 103 years, seven months,
and 12 days, of 15 Timberlane Drive, Clear Lake, died Friday
(Jan. 26, 1996) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31,
1996, at the Congregational Church, with the Rev. Larry Squier
officiating.

Lyle Irvin Brakel was born Feb. 2, 1923, in rural Cerro Gordo
County, near the Portland area.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita, of Charles City; three
sons, Dennis Brakel, Charles City; Dean Brakel of Caribou, Maine,
and Michael Brakel of Forest City; two daughters, Linda Lantz
of Rudd and Patricia Scholbrock of Lawler; two stepsons, Craig
Dietrich of Northome, Minn., and Daniel Dietrich of Ten Strike,
Minn.; two stepdaughters, Ayleen Wallin of Black Duck, Minn.,
and Pat Troxler of Germany; one brother, Dale Brakel of Mason
City; 15 grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
and one stepgreat-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

Mrs. John W. (Darlene) Shaw, 58 of Augusta, Ga., formerly of
Nora Springs, died Saturday (Jan. 27, 1996) at home.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, Augusta, Ga., with the Rev. Michael Ring officiating.
There will be no visitation as her body was cremated.

Darlene was born Aug. 26, 1937, in Rockford, the daughter of
Jess Sr. and Louise Stickney. She moved with her parents to
Nora Springs where she attended school. She was a 1955 graduate
of Nora Springs High School.
In 1957, she was united in marriage to John W. ``Wesley'' Shaw
and due to his career in the U.S. Army traveled many places and
eventually retired in Augusta, Ga.
She had a deep love for her church and grandchildren. She enjoyed
cooking and baking.
She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Augusta,
Ga., and served in many church capacities.
Survivors include her husband, John W. ``Wesley'' Shaw of Augusta,
Ga.; two daughters, Vicki Harris, Bad Kreuznach, Germany, and
Kristi Jones, Augusta, Ga.; two sons, John Dee Shaw, Augusta,
Ga., and Eric Shaw, MaCombe, Okla.; two brothers, Jess Stickney
Jr. and wife, Jinny, Rockford, and Jerry Stickney and wife, Bonnie,
Nora Springs; four sisters, Clara Ingalls and husband, Walt,
Holden Beach, N.C., Dixie Cain and husband, Charles, Tampa, Fla.,
Sharon Bonjour and husband, Walt, Mason City, and Dianna Orluske
and husband, Paul, Nora Springs; seven grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess Sr. and Louise

William R. `Bill' Mathis
BOWDINHAM, Maine
William R. ``Bill'' Mathis, 79, of Bowdinham, Maine, formerly
of Charles City, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 1996) at Kennebeck
Medical Center, Augusta, Maine, of cardio-respiratory arrest.
Memorial funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday,
Jan. 30, 1996, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
807 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. Eldon Jandebeur
officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, is
in charge of the arrangements.

William Raymond ``Bill'' Mathis was born July 15, 1916, in Faribault,
Minn., the son of Friederich and Caroline (Hoffeld) Mathis.
On Feb. 26, `1939, in Morristown, Minn., he married Kathrine
Irene Quigley. Mr. Mathis joined the U.S. Navy during World
War II. He served as a corpsman at the Naval Hospital in Farragut,
Idaho. Following his return to Iowa after the war, the couple
made their home in Charles City in 1944. Mr. Mathis became the
manager of Gambles Department Store in Charles City. He then
took a position with First Security Bank of Charles City. He
remained at the bank for 33 years, retiring as a vice president
of the bank.
Mrs. Mathis died on Jan. 2, 1995, in Mason City. Mr. Mathis
moved to Maine to make his home with his son.
Mr. Mathis was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ) in Charles City. He was a member of North Iowa Bankers
Association. He had served as a member of the Charles City School
Board. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post
202 of Topsham, Maine. This year marked Mr. Mathis' 50th year
as a member of the American Legion. In his spare time, he was
an avid hunter and fisherman. He often enjoyed going to watch
the games of the Charles City Comettes Softball Team.
Living family members include a son and his wife, James and
Royann Mathis of Bowdinham, Maine; two grandsons, Aaron Mathis
of Newport, R.I., and Jared Mathis of Brunswick, Maine; a brother,
John Mathis of Denver, Colo., and a sister, Anne Mull of Prescott,
Ariz.

Earl Francis Cole was born Aug. 16, 1921, at Waterville, a son
of Carl and Rosalia (Gerkey) Kohl. He married Mildred C. Scholl
on May 3, 1950, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.
Mr. Cole was a graduate of Decorah High School. He served in
the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the Philippines.
He fought in battles on Leyete Island, Bataan Island, Luzon
Island, Zambales Island and Corregidor Island. Following his
discharge, he moved to Seattle, Wash., where he lived for a short
time. He then lived in Decorah before moving to Mason City in
1948.
Mr. Cole worked at Armco Steel Co., Mason City, for several
years. He retired from Associated Milk Producers, Inc., in 1984,
after working there 27 years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and gardening. He was
a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Cole, Mason City; three
sons, Pat Cole and his wife, Marie, Mason City, Frank Cole and
his wife, Marcie, Albert Lea, Minn., and Gary Cole and his wife,
Dianne, Rockford; nine grandchildren, Michael Cole, Jason Cole,
Jim Cole, Sarah Cole, Scott Cole, Heather Cole, Douglas Cole,
Chelsea Cole and Samantha Cole; and one sister, Coletta Vick,
Decorah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Corrine
Queel; and one brother, Jim Cole.

Everett Harness, 83, of 225 15th St. N.W., died Thursday (Jan.
25, 1996) at home.

Harlan Stenberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park

Everett Harness was born July 5, 1912, in Clark County, Mo.,
a son of Benjamin and Lillie (Weller) Harness. He married Mary
Jones on Dec. 21, 1934, in Carthage, Ill. He served with the
U.S. Army during World War II.
The couple moved to Mason City in 1945. Mr. Harness worked
35 years as a heavy equipment operator for E.M. Duesenberg
Construction Co., Clear Lake. He retired in 1980.
Mr. Harness was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Harness of Mason City; one
daughter, Sherry Lynch, and her husband, John, of Dallas, Texas;
a foster son, Wayne Ebbers of Rapid City, S.D.; four grandchildren,
Michelle Lynch of Lewisville, Texas, Tony Harness of Danville,
Ill., and Mika Morrison and Shannon Simmons, both of Mahomet,
Ill.; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Alta Tweedy of Eugene,
Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ida Constance ``Daisy'' Myhr, age 103 years, 7 months and
12 days, of 15 Timberlane Drive, died Friday (Jan. 26, 1996)
at home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First
Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. N., with the Rev. Larry
Squier officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Wednesday
at the church.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., is in charge
of the arrangements.
Mrs. Myhr was born June 14, 1892, in Fairmont, Minn. She was
the seventh of eight children born to John and Emma (Farrar)
Sweeney.
The Sweeneys were farmers near Fairmont, where Mrs. Myhr received
her education in rural schools of the area. Upon reaching adulthood,
she taught in the rural schools until she met and on June 11,
1915, married B.C. Myhr of Thompson.
The newlyweds lived a few years in Braddock, N.D., and Merriman,
Neb., before moving to Mason City in 1922. In 1923, they moved
to Clear Lake, where they finally settled. Over the course of
14 years, four children were born to the couple.
Mrs. Myhr has been a resident of Clear Lake for more than 73
years and a member of First Congregational Church for more than
50 years. She also was a member of Clear Lake Tina Rebecca Lodge,
Royal Neighbors, Afternoon Bridge Club and Clear Lake Senior
Citizens Center.
She is survived by her children, Derwin C. Myhr and his wife,
Elizabeth, Deer Harbor, Wash., Ellsworth B. Myhr and his wife,
Margaret, Sun City, Ariz., Carol F. Myhr and his wife, Lucille,
Ocala, Fla., and Norma J. Stephenson and her husband, Clifford,
Clear Lake. She was grandmother of 19, great-grandmother of
44 and great-great-grandmother of one.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one
daughter-in-law, Patricia; one grandchild; and all her siblings.

Marvella Mae Overbeck was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Belmond, a
daughter of Donald and Clara (Holm) Beenken. She grew up and
attended school in Belmond. In 1950, she was united in marriage
to Leroy Mattix. On March 7, 1960, she was united in marriage
with Melvin Pannhoff. In 1984, she was united in marriage to
Albert Overbeck. Marvella worked as a cleaning lady for various
businesses and homes. She was working at the Pizza Hut in Clarion,
where she had recently been named employee of the month, at the
time of her death.
Marvella loved country western music. She also loved spending
time with her family and friends.
Marvella is survived by two daughters, Virginia Swann of Burke,
S.D., and Barbara Ledvina and her husband, Ken, of Williamsburg;
one son, Steven Mattix and his wife, Julie, of Brandon, S.D.;
six grandchildren; three sisters, Delphine Watermiller and her
husband, Hermand, of Hampton, Velma Sobottka and her husband,
David, of Roberts, Wis., and Barbara Ohrt and her husband, Carl,
of Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Donald Beenken and his wife,
Marie, Roger Beenken and his wife, Laura, and Alan Beenken and
his wife, Dixie, all of Clarion; numerous nieces and nephews;
four half sisters, Betty Beenken of Des Moines, Cathy Hand and
her husband, Greg, of Germany, Denise Beenken of Des Moines and

from Grafton High School in 1945. He also attended and graduated
from Mason City Junior College and the Reisch World Wide College
of Auctioneering in Mason City.
After completing his education, he worked on the family farm
with his father and sons in the Grafton area and also was an
auctioneer with Bob Sherrard of St. Ansgar and Dennis Johnson
of Carpenter for several years until his retirement in 1985.
After his retirement, he worked parttime for the Cole Brothers
Farms in the Grafton area.
He was united in marriage to Ilene Rose Kirchgatter on Aug.
19, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
He enjoyed auctioneering, traveling, fishing, gardening, cooking
and visiting with his family and many friends. He was a member
of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton.
Survivors include his mother, Helen P. Martin of the Lutheran
Retirement Home, Northwood; three sons, Jerry Navratil of Charles
City, Randy Navratil and his wife, Mary, of Story City, and Rory
``R.T.'' Navratil and his girlfriend, Donna, of Grafton; one
daughter, Joleen Bakken and her husband, Erik, of Davenport;

Harold L. ``Bud'' Sims, 85, of 24 Circle Terrace, a recent
resident of West Des Moines, died Friday (Jan. 26, 1996) at the

Harold L. Sims was born Sept. 8, 1910, at Grand Junction, a
son of Herman A. and Hattie (Osborne) Sims. He attended school
in Grand Junction. Following school he helped on the farm.
He worked for many years as a parts manager for International
Harvester.
He was united in marriage to Mercedes Burke on July 3, 1935,
in Grand Junction, and to this union was born one daughter.
During the polio epidemic, in their generosity, they took in
their 9-month-old niece, Joni Louk.
Bud never lost the gift of giving as he continued throughout
his years to be a benefactor to many people.
During World War II, he was employed as a welding instructor
at the shipyards in California. He kept his ties to the military
by being a member of the National Guard. Later in life, he owned
and operated Bud's Lunch in Jefferson until moving to Des Moines
in 1963. There he was a welder at White's Construction Co. until
retiring in 1975. Unable to remain idle, he then worked in the
shipping and receiving department of Wilson's by Gary Williams
Clothing Stores.
Bud was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Knights of
Columbus in Jefferson and then West Des Moines. He enjoyed his
vegetable and flower gardens and was known as Mr. Fix-it when
it came to repair of electrical, plumbing and woodworking.
Harold is survived by his wife, Mercedes, of Mason City; and
one daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Marilyn) Newbrough of Iowa City; and
his niece who he raised as a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Joni) Bealer,
Mason City; five grandchildren, Stacy Newbrough, Shayne Tolsdorf,
Brad Tolsdorf, Daniel Denhardt and Jeremy Bealer; and one
great-grandson, Brandon Tolsdorf.
Bud will be reunited with those who preceded him: his parents;
one brother, Elmer; and three sisters, Ida, Florence and Hazel.

the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She had made her home in Mason
City ever since.
She loved to spend time fishing, camping, and boating, but most
of all, she loved her family.
She was also an avid flea marketer and loved spending time at
craft shows, often looking for salt and pepper shakers from each
of the 50 states. She was an excellent seamstress.
She was a former member of the VFW Auxillary.
Clara will be sadly missed by her son, Floyd Harms and his wife,
Kathy, of Nora Springs; two sisters, Violet Ruth Davis, of Silvam
Springs, Ark., and Mary G. Smith of Rockwell; two brothers, Don
L. Davis of Dumont, and William ``Bud'' Davis of Oklahoma; one

Word has been received of the death of Floy R. O'Neill, 92,
on Sunday (Jan. 28, 1996) in Springfield, Va., while she was
visiting her daughter, Wynifred Clark.
Floy Rachel White was born Oct. 8, 1903 in Fertile, Iowa, to
Elmer and Rena (Fankell) White.
She attended Fertile schools until moving to Clear Lake where
she graduated in 1922.
After graduation from high school, she was secretary to the
superintendent of schools and later worked as a bookkeeper for
Sondrol Department Store.
She was married to Max O'Neill in 1927. They moved to Goshen,
Ind., where she made her home up to the time of her death.
The body was cremated.
Memorial services and burial will be held in Goshen, Ind., at
a later date.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon O'Neill of Goshen,
Ind., and Wynifred M. Clark of Springfield, Va.; a son, Verde
O'Neill and his wife, Joan, of Lakeville, Ind.; four grandchildren;
11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Stephens of Clear
Lake.

Bena Stenersen was born July 28, 1902, at Aplington.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers

Lewine Cassidy
ROCKWELL
Lewine Cassidy, 97, of 304 Washington, Rockwell, died Sunday
evening (Jan. 28, 1996) at the Rockwell Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell, with Father John Kremer of Holy
Family Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church Cemetery, Dougherty.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the Parish Center,
with a 7 p.m. parish rosary.
Fullerton Funeral Home, Rockwell, is in charge of arrangements.

M. Lewine Cassidy was born on Aug. 4, 1898, in Dougherty, the
daughter of Daniel J. and Rose (McMenimen) McLaughlin.
She was a graduate of St. Patrick's school. She was employed
as a helper for area neighbors until she was united in marriage
to Maurice Cassidy on Sept. 29, 1925, in Dougherty.
She worked as a partner in her husband's custom farm work as
well as being a homemaker. She has lived in Rockwell since 1935.
She is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served as
the treasurer for the guild.
Her special interests included cooking and being a seamstress.
Lewine will be missed by her loving family, her daughter, Mrs.
Lloyd (Marian) Witte, of Green Bay, Wis.; her son, Robert Cassidy
of Rockwell; and her one granddaughter, Mrs. Michael (Cyndi)
Seamon of Plymouth, Minn.; and her one sister, Mrs. Walter (Marcella)
Jackson of Clear Lake.
Lewine was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice, in 1988;
her parents; two sisters, Eleanor Zweck and Leona Fox; three
brothers, John, Daniel and Joseph McLaughlin; and one infant
daughter.

William K. `Bill' McElroy
MASON CITY
William K. ``Bill'' McElroy, 64, of 425 22nd St. S.E., died
unexpectedly on Monday (Jan. 29, 1996) at his residence of heart
complications.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Wayside
Chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave.,
with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth, associate pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with military
graveside honors conducted by the American Legion Walker-Graper
Post #338 of Rockford.
Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson
James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., where the family will
receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from
9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and one hour prior
to services at the church on Thursday afternoon.
William Keith ``Bill'' McElroy was born March 6, 1931, in rural
Rockford, the son of Louis ``Pete'' and Rose (Kiefer) McElroy.
He attended school in Rockford and graduated from Rockford High
School in 1948. He worked briefly as a farmhand before entering
the United States Air Force in 1950. He served as an Airman
First Class on the Air Force Base in San Marcos, Texas, where
he was an instructor on helicopter maintenance. He was honorably
discharged in 1954, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and National
Defense Service Medal. He returned to Mason City and took a
position with Oliver/White Farm Tractor in Charles City. He
then went to work for Lehigh Portland Cement Company in Mason
City. For 22 years Mr. McElroy was a clerk with the United States
Postal Service in Mason City. He retired in 1989.
On Nov. 29, 1959, in Hampton, he was united in marriage to Ruth
Delores Merrill. Mrs. McElroy died Feb. 22, 1982, in Iowa City.
He then married Lana Rae Hilsne on Sept. 27, 1985, in the Wayside
Chapel of First United Methodist Church, Mason City. He was
a member of the United Postal Workers Union local #306. In his
spare time, he enjoyed gardening and raising flowers,
particularly roses. He was a meticulous caretaker of
his lawn. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Minnesota
Vikings and Twins, and the Chicago Bulls.
Living family members include his wife, Lana, of Mason City;
their daughter, Leslie, at home in Mason City; his children,
Alan Davis and his wife, Vicki; daughter Debra and her husband,
James Powell, and daughter Lori and her husband, Scott DeVary,
all of Mason City; two brothers and their wives, Robert and Kathryn
McElroy of Charles City, and Charles and Mildred McElroy of Rockford;
two sisters, Berniece Parker of Rockford, and Mary Ott and her
husband, Richard, of Greene; eight grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, one sister,
Bernadine Nash, and an infant son, William McElroy Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; three daughters, Delores
Graham of Nashua; Donna Randolph of Gaithersburg, Md., and Jane
Vohsman of Waterloo; two sisters, Ethel McGrath of New Hampton,
and Fae Flint of Charles City; 12 grandchildren; 23
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, two sisters
and one great-granddaughter.

near Corwith.

Nina B. Knutson, 78, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Jan. 29, 1996)
at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran
Church with the Rev. Mark Bents officiating. Burial will be
in the South Shell Rock Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to
11:30 a.m. Friday at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. South.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church
on Friday.
Nina Beatrice Knutson was born on April 19, 1917, in Rockwell,
the daughter of William and Melinda (Muth) Lubben. She was baptized
and affirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at
St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rockwell. She attended and received
her education in the Rockwell School system, graduating from
Rockwell High School. She also attended and graduated from LaJames
College of Hairstyling and Cosmetology in Mason City. After
completing her schooling she started to work as a beautician
at the Northwood Hotel. She then owned and operated her own
beauty shop in her home in rural Northwood.
She was united in marriage to Leslie Harland Knutson on June
4, 1944, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rockwell. He preceded
her in death on July 12, 1990.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, quilting, and did numerous volunteer
projects at the church.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, the
Rachel Circle at the church, and the 3M Camera Club in Northwood.
Survivors include one uncle, Melvin Muth and his wife, Merilayne,
of Mason City, as well as several cousins and many friends.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents
and two brothers.
