WADENA, Minn.
Fernalee E. Kanzenbach, 81, of Wadena, Minn., formerly of Grafton,
Iowa, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 1995) at Tri-County Hospital, Wadena.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1996,
at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Gregory Bjornstad
officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from noon until time of service Tuesday
at the church. Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly,
Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
Fernalee E. Kanzenbach was born Jan. 18, 1914, in Motley, Minn.,
the daughter of Warren and Myrtle (Reeves) Cox. She attended
and received her education in the Windom, Minn. school system,
graduating from Windom High School. She was united in marriage
to Ruben Kanzenbach on Sept. 25, 1936, in Brainerd, Minn. He
preceded her in death on Aug. 23, 1985. After their marriage,
they moved to the Grafton area and then moved to Albert Lea,
Minn., where she worked at various jobs in Albert Lea and lived
there 20 years, moving to South Dakota, Madelia, Minn., Salem,
Ore. then moving to Wadena, Minn. in 1993.
She enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, listening and playing religious
songs on the piano, crafts, cooking, gardening and flowers; but
her great love and enjoyment was her grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
She was a former member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton,
and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minn.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Kanzenbach and his wife,
Kathleen, Wells, Minn., and Byron Kanzenbach and his wife, Barbara,
Salem, Ore.; one daughter, Ardith Amundson and her husband, Douglas,
Sebeka, Minn.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; one
sister, Mary Marvin, Albuquerque, N.M.; numerous nieces and nephews;
as well as other relatives and friends.
Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents;
one son, Melvin Kanzenbach; one daughter, Myrtle Kanzenbach;
two grandsons, Daniel and Michael Kanzenbach; one great-granddaughter,
Carley Fern Amundson; four sisters, and three brothers.

Viola was born April 9, 1916, the daughter of LeRoy and Molly
(Halverson) Abbott. She married Donald A. Westcott on April
16, 1938, and would have been married for 58 years this coming
April. Viola took civil defense training in the 1960s, was past
president of Hoover PTA, and a former Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include her husband, Donald A. Westcott, of Mason
City; one son, Melvin Westcott and wife, Judy, of Savannah, Ga.;
two daughters, Linda Magnuson and husband, James, of Boca Raton,
Fla., and Julie Traft and husband, Kenneth, of Shakopee, Minn.;
and one grandson, Nick Olson of Shakopee, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Betty;
and two brothers, Don and Roy.

Velma R. Giles Weatherwax was born Feb. 14, 1916, at Hartington,
Neb.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet Cimmiyotti of Charles
City and Shirley Bonzer of Shell Rock; one brother, Darrell Giles
of Albert Lea, Minn.; three sisters, Isabel Schaefer of Austin,
Minn., Beulah Feuerhelm of Albert Lea, Minn., and Stella Niehaus
of Minneapolis, Minn.; and four grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers
and three sisters.

Leona Heuer was born Nov. 5, 1912, in Coldwater Township, Butler
County, a daughter of Edward and Wilhemina (Schrage) Heuer, and
died Sunday (Dec. 31, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center
East in Mason City.
She received her education in rural Butler County schools and
as a young lady helped her parents on the family farm.
She was united in marriage to Alvin H. Landers on June 22,
1934, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar.
Mr. and Mrs. Landers farmed in the Greene area until their
retirement in 1975 when they moved into Greene.
Following Mr. Landers death on Oct. 6, 1983, she continued
to live in her own home until her last illness.
Leona will be remembered for her great love for her family and
especially her grandchildren, and she always enjoyed baking things
for them.
She was more concerned about the needs of others than those
of herself.
Leona had a great sense of humor, and used it even in times
of adversity.
Her other interests included crocheting and gardening.
She was baptized on Dec. 26, 1912, and confirmed a member of
St. John's Lutheran Church at Vilmar. After her marriage, she
became a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene.
Living family members include one daughter, Lavone, and her
husband, Larry Frerichs, of Greene; one son, Roger, and his wife,
Linda Landers, of Aredale; eight grandchildren, Brad, Brit and
Bryan Frerichs, Lori Kock, Karla Harris, Todd and Rick Landers
and Jill Benning; two stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren;
two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild;
three sisters, Mylinda Moser of Des Moines and Lorena Landers
and Lucile Heuer, both of Charles City; and one brother, Alfred
Heuer of Allison.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister,
Ella Landers; and one brother, William Heuer.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials
to the Leona Landers Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Riecka was born on Feb. 22, 1917, to Charles E. and Ida (Dickens)
Beer on the family farm near Corwith.
She received her education at the Magor No. 1 county school
near the farm.
She was united in marriage to Jacob Weiss at Britt on Sept.
13, 1941, and to this union were born six children.
Following the war, they made their home in Mason City.
She was employed as a nurses aide at the former Park Hospital
for 10 years, retiring in 1978.
Riecka leaves five daughters and one son: Mary Gee of West Minster,
Colo.; Mrs. Gerald (Josephine) Kasprzak, Goshen, Ind.; Mrs. Kenneth
(Margaret) Gross, Downers Grove, Ill.; Mrs. Gary (Jane) Ginapp
of Mason City; Mrs. Dennis (Christine) Hunt of Iowa City; Mitch
and his wife, Candy, of Mason City; 13 grandchildren; five great-
grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Kelling of Dows and Ruby
Maynard of Kanawha.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; her parents;
three brothers, Robert, Jesse and Charles; and five sisters,
Marguerite, Erma, Lucille, Emma and Tressa.

Marjorie Elaine Bang Pals, 81, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 1995)
at Littleton, where she made her home in recent years.
She formerly lived at Joice, Iowa, where she was born Jan.
16, 1914, and spent her early years.
She attended both Waldorf Academy and graduated from the Forest
City College, where she completed the Teacher's Training Course
in 1933. Grafton, Thornton, Meservey and Clarion were area schools
where she followed her chosen career.
She continued her education at Columbia University, New York,
and the University of Denver where in 1957, she earned the Bachelor
of Arts degree in the areas of special education and education.
In 1968 at the University of Denver, she earned the Master of
Arts degree in speech and speech and language pathology.
She was also certified in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. During
her career as a speech and language pathologist, she was employed
by public schools, the University of Denver Speech and Hearing
Center and Porter Memorial Hospital, Denver.
At the close of her professional career, she was owner and director
of the Center for Communicative Disorders in Littleton.
Her membership in professional organizations included the American
Speech Language and Hearing Association, the International
Association of Orofacial Myology, Delta Kappa Gamma and American
Association of University Women. She held leadership positions
in those organizations as well as in the Republican party.
Active membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
included volunteer work in Sunday schools, youth groups, preschools
and women's groups.
In 1939, she married Harold W. Pals of Meservey. Their family
included two sons and one daughter.
After some years of farming in this area, they moved to Des
Moines. Ultimately he became a block-man for International Harvester,
and the family lived in various western cities in Arizona, California,
Colorado, Montana and Nebraska.
Mrs. Pals was preceded in death by her husband and her parents,
John H. and Oline Larson Bang.
Survivors are children, James H. Pals and wife, Ellen, of Littleton,
Colo.; Harlan W. Pals and wife, Anne, of St. Charles, Mo.; and
Mary E. Pfeiffer and husband, the Rev. John D. Pfeiffer of Riviera,
Ariz.; brothers, Hubert Bang and wife, Doris, of Joice, Iowa;
and John D. Bang and wife, Junice, of Melbourne, Fla.; five grandchildren,
Justin Pals of Denver, Colo.; Tara Pals of St. Peter, Minn.;
Kris Pals of St. Charles, Mo.; Mary-Elizabeth and Jonathan Pfeiffer
of Riviera, Ariz.; and many cousins and friends.
The inurnment at Concordia Cemetery, near Joice, Iowa, will
be at a later announced date.

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with Leo Stattelman

Delpha was born July 26, 1913, in Clear Lake, the daughter of
Albert Roy and Caroline (Dunteman) Huey.
She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1932 and attended
Hamilton Business College in Mason City.
On Dec. 24, 1941, she married Joseph Klein in Des Moines. He
was killed during World War II on Dec. 24, 1944.
She was united in marriage to Ernest H. ``Lindy'' Linnenkamp
on Aug. 27, 1951, in Clayton, N.M.
She was employed at Mercy Hospital and Surgical Associates.
Later, she worked as office manager for Allied Mills in Mason
City.
Delpha enjoyed working with her hands, gardening, doing crafts
and doll making. She was a loving, creative, generous person
with an open mind, who loved to read and had a zest for life.
She lived gracefully in the world.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake
and the Clear Lake American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sisters, Doris Evans of Harbor, Ore.,
and Dorcas ``Patsy'' Gibb of Willow Grove, Pa.; two brothers,
Darwin Huey and his wife, Ursala, of Omaha, Neb., and D.A. ``Pete''
Huey and his wife, JoAnn, of Clear Lake; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband;
her second husband; three brothers, Dennis, Don and David Huey;
and one sister, Dorothy Powell.

He attended schools in Iowa. During the mid-1930s, he enrolled
in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Eldora, Iowa. On Nov.
5, 1940, he was united in marriage to Ann Eggena of Rockford,
Iowa. For several years he was an employee of the Sears retail
store in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1941, he returned to farming and
lived in the Germantown, Aurelia, Rockford and Thornton, Iowa,
areas and later farmed near Osage for 12 years. In 1964, Vernon
and Ann moved to California.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Ann, of Fresno; two sons, Gary
Kluender Sr. and Daryl Kluender, both of Osage, Iowa; three grand-
children, Gary Kluender Jr., Osage, Iowa, and Vernon and Kathleen
Kluender, both of Sheffield, Iowa; three brothers, Merl Kluender,
Benzon, Ariz.; Al Kluender, Phoenix, Ariz., and Ray Kluender,
Denison, Iowa; and four sisters-in-law, Vera and Verlie Kluender
of Sioux City, Iowa, and Edna and June Kluender, Paullina Iowa.

He was a supervisor employed with Oliver Tractor Corp., Charles
City, Iowa, until retirement in 1976. He and his wife moved
to Novato in 1979. After arriving in Novato, he started a new
career, managing the Otavon Apartment Complex on South Novato
Blvd.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Redington of Novato; a son,
Jerry Redington of San Leandro, Calif.; a daughter, Sheryl Adams
of San Rafael, Calif.; a granddaughter, Tamara Backstrom of Denver,
Colo.; and a great-grandson, Justin Backstrom, also of Denver,
Colo.

Marie was born on June 23, 1931, in Des Moines, the daughter
of Arthur and Edna (Pierce) Larson. She attended school in Lawler.
She was united in marriage to Alva E. Pearce on Nov. 13, 1949,
at First Congregational Church in Des Moines. They made their
home in Mason City and she had lived for over 42 years. She
was a waitress for several fine restaurants in Mason City including
the Country House, Seven Nations and Murph's. Many patrons asked
specifically for her when they dined out. She retired due to
her health in June of 1994.
She was well known for her love of flowers and her ability
to take any type of sick and dying plant and make it flourish.
She had over 300 rose bushes that she cared for. She also enjoyed
other types of gardening, refinishing woodwork and had a special
attachment to her pets.
Marie will be missed by her daughter, Mrs. Keith ``Buz'' (Becky)
Johnston, Mason City; two sons, Craig Allen Pearce and his fiance,
Lori, Kensett, and Scott John Pearce and his wife, Kim, Mason
City; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Edith) Wihlm, Sheffield; Mrs.

David was born Dec. 31, 1944, in Forest City to James and Myrtle
(Olson) Nelson. David was baptized and confirmed at the Crystal
Lake Methodist Church. He was a 1963 graduate of Woden-Crystal
Lake High School. He attended Waldorf College at Forest City,
graduating in 1965. He also attended Mankato State College,
pursuing his interest in art.
On May 22, 1971, he was united in marriage to Sondra Ehrich
at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Blue Earth, Minn. One son, Erik,
was born to them. After his marriage, he worked at the family
grocery. He and his family later moved to Mankato, Minn., and
then returned to Crystal Lake.
David was always interested in art and collecting antiques.
He thought very highly of his wife and son. He was a devoted
husband and father, taking care of his wife during her illness.
David and Erik were very close after the passing of Sondra.
He will be missed by his family and friends, especially Erik.

James of Crystal Lake; a sister, Marilyn Bjornsen of Decorah;
a brother, James of Crystal Lake; his mother-in-law and father-in-law,

of James and Martha (Hawks) Kilby. Kenneth attended Mason City
schools and served in World War II in the Philippines. He drove
as an over the road truck driver for the Woodrich Construction
Company from Minneapolis, Minn., and retired in 1983. Ken married
LaVerne ``Larrie'' Wall in May 1976, in Austin, Minn. He was
a devoted grandfather.
Kenneth was a member of the Spring Valley, Minn., V.F.W. and
attended Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.
Survivors include his wife, Larrie Kilby of Mason City; two

Joseph ``Joe'' Oleson was born on Sept. 8, 1898, in Northwood,
the son of John Arnold and Annie Marie (Jacobson) Oleson. He
attended and received his education in the Northwood school system,
graduating from Northwood High School. He also attended Hamilton
Business College in Mason City, where he met and fell in love
with Lucy Tabb, and they were united in marriage on Feb. 16,
1922, in Mason City. They would have celebrated their 74th year
of marriage. After their marriage, he worked for the railroad
until 1929. During the depression years he worked at many jobs
so he could provide for his family. In 1938, he began working
for the Northwood Schools as a custodian, and continued to work
for them for 38 years until his retirement. He always enjoyed
the kids who attended school. In high school he played basketball
and it would forever be his favorite sport, although he enjoyed
the others.
He enjoyed gardening, especially raising strawberries and sweet
peas, and woodworking, where he loved making things for his
grandchildren.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood
and was an honorary member of the FFA in Northwood.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lucy Oleson of the Lutheran
Retirement Home, Northwood; one son, James A. Oleson of Clear
Lake; one daughter, Shirley Groff of Austin, Minn.; two grandchildren,
Janet Westendorf and her husband, John, of Austin, Minn., and
Thomas Groff and his wife, Cindy,, of Conger, Minn.; two great-
grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jimmy Westendorf of Austin, Minn.; as
well as many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; two
sisters; one daughter-in-law; and one son-in-law, James Groff.

Asuncion M. Monteon, 85, of 526 14th St. N.W., died Wednesday
(Jan. 3, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
Funeral services are tentatively planned for 11 a.m. Monday
at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Visitation will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Fullerton Patterson
James Funeral Chapel, where other arrangements are incomplete.

Glen `Bud' Huebner
PLYMOUTH
Glen ``Bud'' Huebner, 69, of rural Plymouth, died Wednesday
(Jan. 3, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel
Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Gregory Bjornstad officiating.
Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery with military rites at
the graveside provided by Grafton American Legion Post 616.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Champion
Funeral Home, Osage, and will continue one hour prior to services
at the church on Saturday.
Glen ``Bud'' Huebner was born April 2, 1926, near Plymouth.
Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Vikturek of Mason City,
and Harlys Field of Nora Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

CLARION
Jeanette M. Otteros, 77, of Clarion, died Wednesday (Jan. 3,
1996) at Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Willim
Funeral Home, Clarion, with the Rev. Glenn Kappelman of First
and Vernon Lutheran Churches, Dows, officiating. Burial will
be in the Vernon Township Cemetery, Dows.
There will be no visitation. Willim Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lou Bohlke of Marshalltown,
and Judy Kay Van Cleve of Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister, Mary
Kathryn Gardalen of Denver, Colo.; three brothers, Lyle Tilghman
of Eagle Grove, Tom Tilghman of Denver, Colo., and Robert Tilghman
of Little Canada, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers
and one great-grandson.

Lawrence D. `Tom' Cook
AKRON
Lawrence D. ``Tom'' Cook, 65, died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 1996)
at the Akron Care Center after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Schroeder
Funeral Home, Akron, with the Rev. Don Greenough officiating.
Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery,
Wesley.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today with the family
present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lawrence D. ``Tom'' Cook was born March 12, 1930, in Wesley,
the son of Joseph William and Hettie Leah Elizabeth (Gordon)
Cook. He attended school in the Britt area and entered the U.S.
Army in December of 1952. He served in Hawaii as a military
policeman and was released from active duty in December 1953.
He moved to Fort Worth, Texas, to attend television and radio
school before returning to the Britt area in the fall of 1954,
when he began working for the Iowa Highway Commission. He married
Louise Hendrix in Kopperl, Texas, on Dec. 12, 1956. He also
worked for the Texas Highway Commission from 1959 to 1965 before
returning to Logan to once again work for the Iowa State Commission
as a materials analyst, until being transferred to Akron, where
he retired in March 1992, at which time he devoted his time to
gardening, his yard and flowers, woodworking, making peanut brittle
at Christmas time, and trips to see his daughters and sons-in-law,
as well as other family members. He was a member of the Wesley
United Methodist Church of Akron and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Louise; two daughters and their
husbands, Annette Rae and Greg Bame of Marion, Ohio, and Elizabeth
Marie and Scott DeSmith of Litchfield, Minn.; seven brothers
and their wives, Clifford W. Cook of Corwith; Ralph and Mary
Cook, Marvin and Janice Cook and Harold Cook, all of Britt, Homer
Cook of Bellevue, Wash., Kenneth Cook and Norman and Judy Cook,
all of Woodinville, Wash.; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces
and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris
and Elsie; and one brother, Leonard.
