Vyna Belle Anderson (nee) Curtis

Services for Vyna Anderson, 78, of Britt, who died Thursday
(July 6, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City,
will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, with
the Rev. James Mattson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the
Cataldo Funeral Chapel. Memorials are designated for the North
Iowa Medical Heart Clinic at 84 Beaumont Drive, Mason City.
Vyna Belle Anderson, the daughter of Nathaniel E. Curtis
and Alice (nee) Schleffarth Curtis was born Nov. 25, 1916, at
Denver, Colo. The family moved to Belmond where she graduated
from Belmond High School in 1934. Vyna worked as a typist for the
Belmond Reminder. On Oct. 7, 1937, she was married to
Julian H. Anderson at Crown Point, Ind. They lived in Waukegan,
Ill., for several years and then moved to Britt, where Julian
drove a D-X tank truck and later was an auditor for Sun Oil
Company. She enjoyed reading, gardening and crocheting. She was a
member of First Lutheran Church in Britt.
She is survived by two daughters, Julie Mizell and her husband,
Ira Mizell, and their daughter, Sarah Mizell, all of Lancaster,
Calif., and Mindy Gumb and her husband, Michael, and their son,
Michael Andrew Gumb, all of Denver, Colo.; and a sister,
Beda Jenisen of Clarksville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Anderson, on
Sept. 14, 1977; an infant grandson, Andrew Mizell; and her parents.

Russell `Buck' Reasoner
BELMOND
Russell E. ``Buck'' Reasoner, 77, of Belmond, died Thursday (July
6, 1995) at the Belmond Healthcare Center. Funeral services will
be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, with the
Rev. Laurence Garrett officiating. Burial will be in the
Graceland Cemetery, Rowan. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday
at Tenold Funeral Home.
Russell E. Reasoner, the son of James Reasoner and Alice (nee)
Wright Reasoner, was born April 23, 1918, at Dows. When he was in
the third grade, Russell moved with his family to Rowan and
entered the school system there. He graduated with the Rowan
Senior Class of 1937.
During the high school years, he worked part time as a section
hand with the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and after
school learned the skill of a telegrapher. For a time he served on
the ``Extra Board'' traveling with the railroad for a short term
duty in several locations.
On Aug. 10, 1941, he was united in marriage with Margaret Emerson
of Rowan, in Arco, Minn. She accompanied him in his travels with
the railroad company. They finally settled in Crystal Lake in
1941, where he served for a time as mayor of the community.
They came to Belmond in 1960 where Russell served as depot agent
with the railroad, retiring in 1978. Russ was an avid golfer,
and was involved in the founding of the Belmond Country Club golf
course. He served on the City Planning and Zoning Board of
Belmond. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, taking his
regular turn at ushering. He and Margaret spent many winters in
Arizona, but loved their home in Belmond.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Reasoner, of Belmond; a
daughter, Pamela Reasoner Kass of Apple Valley, Minn.; a
granddaughter, Chrstina; a sister, Opal Downey of Farmington,
Minn.; and two brothers, Edward Reasoner of Belmond and Lloyd
Reasoner of Spicer, Minn.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gertrude
Reasoner; and brothers, Casper Reasoner, John Reasoner and George
Reasoner.

Donald Arickx, 46, of Osage, died Friday (July 7, 1995) at the
Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with
the Rev. Rose Marie Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove
Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today at Champion

Donald Arickx was born Feb. 19, 1949 at Osage.
Survivors include his mother, Juanita Arickx, Mitchell; his wife,
Wendy Arickx of Mitchell; one daughter, Erin Arickx, and two sons,
Joshua Arickx and Adam Arickx, all at home; one sister,
Janice Comisky, Osage; three brothers, Raymond Arickx, Jr.,
Mitchell, Charles Arickx of Wayne, Neb., and Mark Arickx of
Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Gertie L. Vanderstoep, 90, of Kanawha, died Saturday (July 8, 1995)
at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Funeral services
will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hollandale Christian
Reformed Church in Hollandale, Minn. Visitation is after 4 p.m.
Monday at Ewing Funeral Home in Kanawha and after 11:30 a.m.
Tuesday at the church.
Gertie Vanderstoep was born July 18, 1904 at Appeldorn,
Netherlands.
Survivors include two daughters, Marian Slings, Osceola, and
Carolyn Ruter, Kanawha; one son, John Vanderstoep of Hollandale,
Minn.; one sisters, Lydia Bos, Orange City, Iowa; two brothers,
Edward Koldenhoven in Colorado, and Richard Koldenhoven of
Sheldon, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son,
one grandchild, and three brothers.

MESERVEY
Grace Smith, 86, of Meservey, died Saturday (July 8, 1995) at
the Americana Care Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed Church in
Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will
be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 Monday
night at the Grarup Funeral Home in Meservey.
Grace Smith was born Oct. 14, 1908 in Meservey, Iowa, the daughter
of Harm Groen Sr. and Lena (nee) Fry Groen. She graduated with
the class of 1925 from the Meservey School system.
She was united in marriage to Clyde Smith on Sept. 20, 1927 in
Meservey. They made their home farming southwest of Clear Lake
where they lived for 27 years. They retired in 1963 and moved to
Meservey. Grace enjoyed her family and grandchildren, especially
the holiday get-togethers. She attended the First Reformed Church
of Meservey.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances Rabe of Mason City, and
Vivian Keith of Cincinnati, Ohio; five sons, Kenneth Smith and his
wife, Grace of Clear Lake, Donald Smith of Meservey, Virgil Smith
and his wife, Myrna of Waterloo, Russell Smith and his wife,
Bobbie of Charles City, Michael Smith and his wife Betty of Clear
Lake; 15 grandchildren, nine great-
grandchildren; one brother, Arnold Groen of Meservey; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; parents, five
brothers and two sisters.

Bernice Marie Dugan
Bernice Marie (nee) Pounds
CHARLES CITY
Bernice M. Dugan, 63, 302 Sprigg St., died Saturday (July 8,
1995) at her residence. A funeral mass will be celebrated at
10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church,
Highway 18 and Clark Streets, Charles City. Monsignor Stanely J.
Hayek, pastor, will celebrate the mass. Burial will be in
Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Friends may call
from noon to 9 tonight at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401
Blunt St., where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:30
p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time at
the church on Tuesday.
Mrs. Dugan, the former Bernice Marie Pounds, was born Aug. 25,
1931 in Cameron, Texas, the daughter of E.D. Pounds and
Bessie (nee) Williams Pounds. Her mother died shortly after
Bernice was born, and she was raised by her aunt, Lola Williams.
On Feb. 21, 1949, in San Angelo, Texas, she married John Bass.
Four children were born to this union, Evelyn, Kathy, Mike and
Jerry. The family moved to Charles City to make their home in
1953. Mr. and Mrs. Bass were later divorced.
On May 12, 1968, Bernice married Bill Dugan in Charles City. They
were later divorced. For 34 years, Bernice was a waitress at the
Uptown Cafe and Lounge in Charles City. She had also been an
employee of All States Quality Foods in Charles City. She retired
from All States in March of 1994. She returned to the Uptown full
time until her health forced her to retire earlier this year.
In 1981, she was awarded the ``Waitress Of The Year'' Award by the
city of Charles city. This past spring, she received the ``Top
Notch Waitress Of The Year'' by KIMT-TV in Mason City. She was a
member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Living family members include three children, Evelyn Rogers and
her husband, Jim Rogers of Denver, Iowa, Kathryn Golly and her
husband, Ken of Charles City, and Mike Bass and his wife, Connie
of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; a brother, Bill ``Bud'' Pounds of
Moepark, Calif.; her aunt who raised her, Lola Williams of Gause,
Texas; 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Bass; her mother and
father; and two brothers, Jake Pounds and George Pounds.

Gladys (nee) Samuelson
GARNER
Gladys Halverson, 78, of Garner, died Sunday (July 9, 1995) at the
Concord Care Center, Garner. Funeral services will be held at 10
a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, with the Rev.
Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cataldo
Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner.
Gladys May Halverson, the daughter of Gilbert Samuelson and Mabel
(nee) Revland Samuelson was born March 23, 1917 on a farm near
Thompson, the second of six children.
She was baptized in the Christian Faith in Thompson and later
confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. At the age
of one, she moved with her family to a farm northeast of Forest
City.
She attended the rural schools of Forest City and later graduated
from Forest City High School in 1934. She continued her education
at Waldorf College for two years where she received her teaching
certificate and later earned her B.A. from Drake University. She
then began teaching in the country schools in North Iowa.
On Aug. 22, 1943, Gladys was united in marriage to Curtis Halverson
at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The couple made their
home north of Garner, and from 1965 to 1982 she taught third grade
in the Garner-Hayfield Schools. Gladys was a teacher for a total
of 24-1/2 years, finishing early due to poor health.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she served as the
church librarian, WELCA, past choir director at Ellington Prairie
Lutheran Church, Retired Teachers of Winnebago and Hancock Counties
and Sons of Norway. Gladys enjoyed reading, traveling, making
quilts and writing children's stories.
She is survived by her husband, Curtis, of Garner; a daughter,
Linda Halverson Knorovsky and her husband, Robert, of Davenport;
two sons, David Halverson and his wife, Jane, of Garner, Jim
Halverson and his wife, Jody of Minneapolis, Minn.; nine
grandchildren; two sisters, Marlys Loveless of Cresco, and Arlene
Endreland of Lake Mills.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Marvin
Samuelson, in infancy, and Gerald Samuelson; and a sister, Cecel
Tweeten.

Betty M. Kelly was born April 15, 1925 in Mason City, the daughter
of Warren Dean and Lillian (nee) Grohs Dean. Betty was raised in
Mason City.
She married Orrel G. Kelly on Aug. 31, 1974 in Minneapolis, Minn.
She enjoyed shopping, sewing and crafts. She was a member of the
Grace United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Orrel G. Kelly of Mason City; one
son, Gary D. Kelly and his wife, Jan Faktor of Mason City; one
daughter, Pam A. Crocker and her husband, Mark Crocker of Lincoln,
Neb.; one brother, Verlon Dean of Lakeside, Calif.; six
grandchildren, Lisa Henschen, Doug Faktor, Jeremy Faktor, Lea
Wiley, Dan Wiley, and Katie Crocker; stepchildren, Jan and her
husband, Bruce Runyan of Burnsville, Minn., Steven J. Kelly of
Bellflower, Calif., and John G. Kelly of Dunedin, Fla.; nieces,
nephews, and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two

Floretta Ernestina Kittleson (nee) Gordon

Floretta Ernestina Kittleson, 77, of Northwood, died Thursday
(July 6, 1995) at her home in Northwood. Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th
St. S., Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Bents of the First Lutheran
Church of Northwood, officiating. Burial will be in the Stateline
Cemetery, rural Northwood. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m.
today and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the
chapel.
Foretta Ernestina Kittleson was born on Aug. 17, 1917, in
Gordonsville, Minn., the daughter of Wilmot Gordon and
Emma (nee) Abbe Gordon. She was baptized at the Mansfield Lutheran
Church in Mansfield, Minn. and confirmed at the Shell Rock Lutheran
Church in Northwood. She attended and received her education in
the Gordonsville and Albert Lea, Minn. school system, graduating
from Albert Lea High School.
She was united in marriage to Norman Burtness in 1937. He preceded
her in death in 1945.
She was united in marriage to Raymond Kittleson in October of 1946.
He preceded her in death in December of 1974.
During her life, she worked at Munsingwear in Albert Lea, Minn.,
Grundmeier Hatchery in Northwood, and the A & W Drive-In in
Northwood. She enjoyed handwork, reading, and traveling, but her
great love and enjoyment was her children and grandchildren. She
was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Survivors include two sons, Hamlin Burtness and his wife, Dorothy
of Manhattan, Kan., and Glenn Kittleson of Ogden, Utah; a foster
son, Karl Kittleson of Northwood; three grandsons, Norman Burtness
and his wife, JoAnn, of Durham, N.C., Tim Burtness and his wife,
Dannette of Wichita, Kan., and Dan Burtness of Manhattan, Kan.;
one granddaughter, Julie Kittleson of Ogden, Utah; one brother,
George Gordon and his wife, Irene of Gordonsville, Minn.; two
sisters, Dolores Virchow and her husband, Russell of Northwood,
and Marlys Prestegaard and her husband, Orin of Austin, Minn., as
well as many nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and
friends.
Besides her first husband, and her second husband, she was also
preceded in death by her parents, and an infant brother, Marvin
Gordon.

Florence C. Geiler, 97, of 1527 N. Jefferson Ave., died Sunday
(July 9, 1995) at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City. Funeral services
will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist
Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Herbert Shafer and the
Rev. Harlan Stenberg officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St.
Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at
Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one
hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be given to
the Florence C. Geiler Memorial fund.
Florence C. Geiler was born on a farm in Floyd County, near
Charles City on Jan. 3, 1898, the daughter of Henry Hartmann and
Anna (nee) Schilling Hartmann. She worked for the telephone
company in New Hampton and came to Mason City in 1918 to work for
Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator.
She married Karl M. Geiler on June 17, 1920. He preceded her in
death on Dec. 15, 1974. She also worked for many years in the
office of Jacob E. Decker (Armour & Company), retiring in 1960.
She was the oldest living member of the Grace United Methodist
Church, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Auxiliary of
Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, retired Decker Women, Golden
Wedding Club, Senior Citizens of Mason City and card groups.
Survivors include one son, Carlton Vae Geiler and his wife, Mitzie
of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Dixie Ann Mennen and her husband,
Richard H. Mennen of Mason City; four grandsons, Kal and Kirk
Geiler of Phoenix, Ariz., Mark G. Mennen of
Alvin, Texas, and Paul Mennen of Chicago, Ill.;
six great-grandchildren, Shenae, Bree Ann and Kaleb Geiler, all of
Phoenix, Ariz., Emily and Eric Mennen and Keri Nelson, all of
Alvin, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers,
two sisters, one grandchild, and one granddaughter-in-law.

Carmen Tibbits was born July 25, 1915 in Osage.
Survivors include one daughter, Marcia Smith of Osage; one son,

great-grandchildren; and one sister, LaVerne Loden of Osage.

Milford Lyman Scherf
MASON CITY
Milford L. Scherf, 84, of 1548 N. Hampshire Ave, died Sunday
(July 9, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East. Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at First Christian
Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Paul Boostrom, pastor,
and the Rev. Burton Everest and the Rev. Norma Jean Everest,
cousins of Milford, officiating. There will be a family prayer
service at 10:15 a.m. in the lounge. Burial will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery. Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at
Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will
continue one hour prior to services at the church today. In lieu
of flowers, memorials may be given to the Milford L. Scherf
memorial fund.
Milford Lyman Scherf was born Jan. 30, 1911, in Ventura, a son of
Milo Scherf and Emma (nee) Kloock Scherf. Milford grew up in the
Ventura area that his grandparents, E.J. and Mary Scherf,
pioneered. He attended Ventura schools and, after the death of his
mother, the family moved to Mason City and he graduated from
Mason City High School in 1929. He was a member of the Mohawk
varsity basketball team from 1927-1929.
After graduation, he worked for Jacob E. Decker and Sons in a
clerical position.
He married Leona Mary Schmidt of Bancroft on March 1, 1932, at the
First Christian Church in Mason City. He served as a meat
inspector in Sioux City for a short time and then returned to
Decker-Armour in 1936 and worked there as an industrial/civil
engineer until his retirement in 1965, working for 35 years.
Milford was active in civic and community affairs, serving on the
junior and senior Chambers of Commerce, Armour Credit Union for 24
years, S.C.O.R.E. in several capacities, Mason City SBA Chapter,
AARP, where he served as director/secretary, Southbridge Public
Information Committee, and Armour Retired Men's Supervisory Club.
Milford was active in the Republican party, serving as Charles
Grassley's senior citizen campaign manager in 1978 and 1980 in the
third district. He enjoyed his rapport with all the North Iowa
legislators and Iowa governors Robert Ray and Terry Branstad.
He was also an avid sports fan. Milford had been a member of the
First Christian Church since 1927.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Scherf of Mason City; one son,
Mel Scherf and his wife, Beatrice Scherf (nee) Anderson, of
Pennsauken, N.J.; one daughter, Margaret Jean Stahl and her
husband, Clyde T. Stahl, of Chula Vista, Calif.; nine
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Gail;
and a brother, Melvin C. Scherf.

James G. Carlson
FORT MYERS, Fla.
James G. Carlson was born on a farm near Klemme, Iowa, on
July 22, 1909, the sixth of nine children born to
Gustaf H. Carlson and Jane Ann (Nee) Cherry Carlson.
He married Clarice Louise (nee) Wellemeyer on May 31, 1936, and
farmed near Ingram, Wis., and also near Klemme, Iowa. Jim retired
from farming in 1972, moved to Belmond, and since 1980 had resided
in North Fort Myers, Fla. Jim was a loving husband, a devoted
father and a hard-working neighbor who loved to share stories with
his friends. In his later years, he enjoyed cooking and baking.
Many of his friends and relatives were recipients of his generous
nature in the form of cookies and home-made bread.
He died on June 27, 1995, in Fort Myers, Fla., after many years of
gradually declining physical abilities brought on by lung disease.
He reached the age of 85 years, 11 months and five days. He and
Clarice had recently celebrated 59 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Clarice Carlson, of North Fort Myers,
Fla.; two children, Arthur Carlson and his wife, Elaine, of Nevada
City, Calif., and Candace Murray and her husband, Michael, of Fort
Myers, Fla.; a sister, Mabel Quandt and her husband, Frederick, of
West Allis, Wis.; a brother, Robert S. Carlson and his wife,
Glenna, of Apple Valley, Calif.; and four
grandchildren, Inga Hooper and her husband, Kevin, of
Concord, N.H., Kyla Carlson of Sunnyvale, Calif., James Murray of
Alexandria, Va., and Joan Murray of Gainesville, Fla.
Memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Association. The
National Cremation Society was in charge of arrangements.

Jennifer H. Ricklefs, 18, of Algona, died Sunday (July 9,
1995) at McKenna Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services

Jennifer Helene Ricklefs was born May 21, 1977, in Algona.

grandparents, Curtis and Shirley Gardner of Algona; and her

Lucille Stensrud Lyng, 95, of Lake Mills died Sunday (July 9, 1995)

the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage. A funeral Mass

Dorothy Gilles was born April 22, 1913, in Osage.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue Safire of Virginia Beach, Va.;

Topeka, Kan., and Jeffery Gilles of Redmond, Wash.; eight
grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Conklin of Osage.

Ervin F. Boerschel, 72, of 512 Second Ave., died Monday
(July 10, 1995) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital. Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist
Church with the Rev. Robin Stoops officiating. Burial will be in
Riverside Cemetery, with a flag presentation and taps by the
Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be from noon until
9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with an
8 p.m. prayer service, and one hour prior to services at the
church. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Baptist
Church, the Heart to Home Hospice or the Floyd County Chapter of
the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Boerschel, of Charles City;

Orie N. Keeling, 86, of Belmond, died Monday (July 10, 1995)
at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City. Memorial
services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Church of
Christ, Clarion, with Mark Young officiating. Burial will be in
Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. There will be no visitation. Tenold
Funeral Home, Belmond, is in charge of arrangements.
Orie Keeling was born Jan. 27, 1909, on a farm four miles south of
Belmond.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Keeling, of Belmond; one son,
Verlyn Keeling of Rowan; four daughters, Lois Southard and Beverly
Delger, both of Clarion, Shirley Curran of Waterloo and Judy
Wiemann of Belmond; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one
sister, Lila Terry of Colfax; and one brother, Clifford Keeling of
Mountain Home, Ark.

Norma J. Kliven was born Nov. 14, 1932 in Odell, Neb., the daughter
of the late Rev. and Mrs. F. Albin Heinz, all formerly of Mason
City.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy VanderPlas of Joice, and
Kathy Olson of Machesney Park, Ill.; three sons, Steven Olson of
Rockford, Ill., and Jon Kliven and Kenny Kliven, both of Loves
Park, Ill.; seven grandsons; three brothers, Al Heinz of Mason
City, Paul Heinz of Clear Lake, and Sig Heinz of Pasco, Wash.; and
a special friend, David Daubert of Loves Park, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Kliven; and one son,
