Duane "Curly" Thielen

Duane "Curly" Thielen, 81, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. He was born on July 23, 1932, in Coulter, Iowa, to Richard and Gladys (Rodemeyer) Thielen. Curly graduated from Latimer High School. He was united in marriage to Cora Lee McCormick on May 20, 1951, in Latimer, Iowa.

Curly farmed his entire life. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. Curly enjoyed reading, trap shooting and working in his wood shop. He also enjoyed collecting guns, knives, coins and antique tractors. Curly is survived by his wife Cora Lee Thielen of Hampton, children Audrey (Bob) Karinen of Littleton, Colorado, Denise (Luis) Figueroa of Brooksville, Florida, Janelle (David) Wilson of Jefferson, Kim (Jim) Shugar of Adel, and Charlie (Sue) Thielen of Hampton, grandsons Jade Wilson, Brandon Viet, Jeramy Viet, Zak Karinen, Heath Figueroa and Clayton Cooper, granddaughters Kelly Karinen, Erin Fisher, Nicole Happe, Jenny Welch, Lindsey Wilson, Keisha Thielen and Joslyn Kiley, eighteen great-grandchildren, siblings Lavern (Carol Dee) Thielen of Cedar Falls, Gay (Sharon) Thielen of Latimer, Betty (Harris) Gausman of Latimer, Shirley (Bob) Swieter of Clarion, Irene (Dick) Shear of Arkansas and Sandy (Ray) Kracht of Dows, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Gladys, brothers Bill and Dick and sister Marge.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, Iowa, with Rev. Karl Bollhagen and Vicar Nathan Schieber officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.



Paul E. Bussert

June 15, 1916 - February 23, 2014

 
Paul E. BussertRev. Paul E. Bussert, 97, died on February 23, 2014. He was born June 15, 1916, in Oak Park, Illinois, and was a pastor in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod from 1942 until his retirement in 2001, serving most recently as chaplain at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa. He also resided at St. Luke from 2009 until 2011. He then lived at Ebenezer Care Center in Minneapolis, MN., until his death.

He attended Concordia High School and College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1940. He served at St. Paul Lutheran School and Mission Chapel in Melrose Park, Illinois, 1940-1942; Mt Calvary Lutheran Church, Holdrege, Nebraska, 1942-1947; was field representative for Valparaiso University in Indiana, 1947-1949; and was pastor at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Gresham, Nebraska, 1949-1957. During his ministry at Gresham he also directed a 70-voice regional choir, The Lutheran Choral Union, giving 49 concerts in eight years, including on radio and television. He was pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Alden, Iowa, 1957-1964; St. John Lutheran Church, Niles, Illinois, 1964-1972; and Peace Lutheran Church, Glidden, Iowa, 1972-1979, at which time he also served as chaplain at two nursing homes in Carroll, Iowa. His last move was to Spencer, where he served as assistant pastor at First English Lutheran Church and was chaplain at St. Luke Lutheran Home. He also directed the choir at First English, as he had at most of his previous assignments, and in both Glidden and Spencer offered classes to teach adult and child monotone voices the basics of vocal music and how to carry a melody. He retired from his position at First English in 1986 but continued his chaplain duties at St. Luke Lutheran Home until 2001 when he retired at the age of 85. He enjoyed his lifelong hobbies of woodworking, gardening and music, and was avid about exercise and running.

He is survived by six children: Judy Schlueter of Detroit, Michigan; Jeanie Porter of St. Robert, Missouri; Jerri Johnson of Eagan, Minnesota; Mark Bussert of Elmhurst, Illinois; Joy Bussert of Northfield, Minnesota; and Janelle Bussert of St. Paul, Minnesota; fourteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Beata (nee Kohlmeier) and his second wife Leona (nee Lettow).

Visitation will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Alden, Iowa on Friday, Feb 28 from 5-8 pm and Saturday, March 1 from 9:30 am until the funeral service at 10:30 am. Interment is in Alden Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Luke Lutheran Home, Spencer, Iowa, First English Lutheran Church, Spencer, Iowa, or Ebenezer Care Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota.


Ernest DeBower

Ernest DeBower, 92, of Waverly, Iowa, formerly of Allison, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa.

He was born December 3, 1921, in Rural Butler County, Iowa, to Harvey J. and Anna (Johnson) DeBower. Ernest graduated from Allison High School. He was united in marriage to W. Eileen Bochman on November 23, 1944, in Allison, Iowa. Ernest was a farmer and also an Insurance Agent. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Ernest was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his daughter Colette (Vernon Jr.) Harms of Cedar Falls, son Craig (Bea) DeBower of Sarasota, Florida, grandchildren Tim (Pam) Harms of Owatonna, Minnesota, Amy (James) Mosley of Waverly, Christina (Collin) Billings of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Daniel (Heather) DeBower of Sarasota, Florida, great grandchildren A.J. Mosley, Zach Mosley, Christian Mosley, Carter Billings, Caitlin Billings, Jack DeBower and Max DeBower.

Ernest is preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, and one brother.

Garold L. Titus

Garold L. Titus, 74, of Aredale, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Hospice of Austin’s Christopher House in Austin, TX.  He was born February 16, 1940 in Albert City the son of Glenn LeRoy “Roy” and Ora Louise Sassman Titus.  He married Veldene E. Bige on June 2, 2001 in Waterloo.

Garold worked at John Deere, where he retired 30 years, retiring in 1994.  He enjoyed farming with his wife Veldene on their farm in Aredale, tractor rides seeing different farming communities and anything to do with tractors.  They enjoyed spending the past three winters in Fredericksburg, TX, where they made many friends.

Survived by: his wife, Veldene of Aredale; three sons, Garold L. Jr. “Lee” (Jo) Titus of Dixon, MO, Mike (Dee) Titus of Rockford, IA, Chris (Amy) Titus of Marble Rock; one daughter, Judy (Monte) Troyer of Stanley; ten grandchildren, Dawnya Titus, Andrew Sutton, Garold L. III “Roy” (Rae) Titus, Melody (Adam) Quinn, Melissa Troyer, Mitch Troyer, Molly Troyer, Chris Titus, Jr., Jacob Titus, Kyle Titus; one brother, Geary (Paulette)Titus of Waterloo and three sisters, Bonnie (Don) Schoenfield of Mission, TX, Sandra Crossman of Strawberry Point and Jaquetta (Ed) Knebel of Dunkerton.

Preceded in death by: his parents; one brother, Rodell Titus and a brother-in-law, Ron Crossman.



Sally Mennenga

Sally Mennenga, 79, of Coulter, Iowa, passed away March 1, 2014, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

She was born April 8, 1934, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Sally moved to Chapin, Iowa, in 1950, where she met Arthur Dean Mennenga, they married on March 13, 1951, they raised seven children together.

She is survived by her daughter Brenda Nolan of Nevada, son Henry Mennenga of Coulter, son Rocky Mennenga of Zanesville, Ohio, son Jerry Mennenga of Coulter, son Kenneth Mennenga of Geneva, son Michael Mennenga of Klemme, daughter Ann Broadway of Hampton, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arthur who died on October 3, 2012, and three grandchildren




Edna Bertha (Janssen) Schnabel


Edna Bertha (Janssen) Schnabel, 87, of Sheffield, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield, Iowa.

She was born, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Benning) Janssen, on November 17, 1926, at her parents' home in rural Ackley, Iowa. Edna was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in rural Geneva, Iowa. She attended country school in rural Ackley, attended Ackley High School for three years and graduated from Geneva High School in 1944. Edna was united in marriage to Glenn Schnabel on August 22, 1948, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in rural Geneva, Iowa. She farmed alongside Glenn west of Chapin for sixty-five years, while raising four sons. Edna was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, where she taught Sunday School for seventeen years. She enjoyed puzzles, playing solitaire, gardening, baking pies and most of all watching her grandchildren play ball.

Edna is survived by her husband Glenn Schnabel of Sheffield, sons Lester (Eva) Schnabel of Sheffield, Rodger Schnabel of Hampton, Keith (Darla) Schnabel of Geneseo, Illinois, and Justin (Carol) Schnabel of Sheffield, grandchildren Paula Schnabel of Ankeny, Matthew (Krystal) Schnabel of Kanawha, Laura (Kyle) Hegtvedt of Rockwell, Rebecca Schnabel of Sheffield, Adam Schnabel of Colona, Illinois, Austin Schnabel of Fayette, Arion Schnabel of Ackley, Anthony Schnabel of Hampton, Rich William of Fort Dodge and his daughter Amariah and Shawnda (Mark) Behr of Adel and their children Mark and Meigan, brother Marvin (Betty) Janssen of Hampton, sisters-in-law Loretta (Don) Bishop of Swaledale and Agnes (Arlon) Duit of Monticello, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Howard Janssen, infant daughter Doris and sister-in-law Lillian (Edwin) Lubkeman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, with Rev. Karl Bollhagen and Vicar Nathan Schieber officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 7, 2014, at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.
 

 

 

Merlene Sullivan

Merlene Sullivan, 67, of Sheffield, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, at her home. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am, Thursday, at Zion Reformed Church, Sheffield, with Rev. Art Zewert presiding. Interment will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme at a later date. Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 pm Wednesday at Retz Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Merlene Kay Sullivan was born December 23, 1946, in Garner, Iowa, a daughter of Harold Frederick and Betty Jean (Marth) Kothenbeutel. She was baptized at the former Evangelical Reformed Church in Klemme and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Klemme.

She was educated in the Klemme schools. Merlene graduated from the NIACC nursing program in 1974 and has been active working in the public health departments, SC/MT School and as Director of Nursing at the Sheffield Care Center. Currently she was teaching CNA courses for NIACC and ABCM Corp.

Merlene liked antiquing, crocheting, watching and feeding birds, tending her flower garden, and reading scripture. She had been regularly attending Zion Reformed Church and was active in their Bible Study group.

Missing her presence are her son: Todd Sullivan, Sheffield; grandchildren: Justin (Hollie) Sullivan, Mountainburg, Arkansas; Rachel and Jordan Sullivan, Charles City, Iowa, brothers and sisters; Daryl Kothenbeutel, Clear Lake; Beverly (Don) Girardot, Fort Wayne, IN; Leland (Robin) Kothenbeutel, Bettendorf; Bruce (Pat) Kothenbeutel, New Ringgold, PA; nieces and nephews.

Merlene is preceded in death by her son Scott; brother Gary, who died in February and her parents.



Mabel Ladene Ackerman

 
Mabel Ladene Ackerman, age 93, of Dows passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Mary Greely Medical Center in Ames.      

Funeral services for Mabel L. Ackerman will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday March 11, 2014 at the United Presbyterian Church in Dows. Pastor Shawn Hill will officiate. Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.       

Visitation for Mabel L. Ackerman will be from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday March 10, 2014 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.      

Mabel, the daughter of George “Bert” and Stella Wescott Watt, was born in Morgan Township near Dows, Iowa, on September 27, 1920. She was baptized in and was a life-long member of the United Presbyterian Church in Dows. She married Francis “Pete” Ackerman on Aril 1, 1951 at the United Presbyterian Church in Dows. Mabel and Pete were blessed with two children, Patti Jo and Danny.      

Mabel started school in Hansell, then moved to Rockford where she attended country school. At the age of nine, they moved back to near Popejoy where she attended Sunny Corner country school. She attended high school in Popejoy, where Mabel graduated in the class of 1937. After high school, Mabel went to Chillicothe, MO, and attended business college for one year. In the fall of 1938, she returned to Dows, where Mabel worked for Rummel Drug for 14 years. Her other jobs included five and one half years as a clerk at the Iowa Liquor Store in Dows, the Dows Creamery Office until it closed in 1965, five and one half years for Glade Market, and three years as co-owner of the thrift store. Mabel’s proudest career accomplishment was her time as manager of the Iowa Liquor Store in Dows until she had to give that up due to health reasons. She was very proud of her Liquor Store Manager of the Month Award given to her in February 1977 by the Iowa Liquor Control Commission.      

Mabel was always a great supporter of Dows where she was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and Kensington Club. She enjoyed reading, watching television, especially Iowa State Cyclone sports and her St. Louis Cardinals, and anything that made her laugh. She was known for her great sense of humor and always had a joke or story to share. Mabel was also quite the social butterfly. You would often find her at the Texas Jams on Friday nights at the Dows Convention Center showing off her love for dance. Mabel dearly loved her grandchildren and the time she spent together with her whole family. She could always be counted on to be there for all of their school activities.      

Mabel is survived by her two children, Jo Spotts and Dan Ackerman both of Ames, three grandchildren, Ryan Spotts of Scottsdale, AZ, Sarah Spotts of Ames, Leah Ackerman of Des Moines, a brother, Robert Watt of Milford, and several nieces and nephews.      

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Pete, infant brother, son-in-law, Carl Spotts, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Fred Granau, and a sister-in-law, Irene Watt.       In lieu of flowers the family will direct gifts towards a memorial fund to be given to Mabel’s favorite organizations.

Mary M. Sandersfeld


Mary M. Sandersfeld, age 86, of Latimer passed away Tuesday February 25, 2014 at the Franklin Country View Nursing Home in Hampton.    

Funeral services for Mary M. Sandersfeld will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday March 3, 2014 at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Latimer. Pastor Travis Berg will officiate. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.   Visitation for Mary M. Sandersfeld will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. Sunday March 2, 2014 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 320 East Street in Latimer and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to the Hospice of North Iowa.   

Mary Maxine Sandersfeld was born on May 8, 1927 at Iowa City, Iowa to Laura Sandersfeld. She grew up under the care of her aunt and uncle, Karl and Minnie Sandersfeld. Mary was baptized on October 23, 1927 in Klemme. She was confirmed at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer on May 28, 1944 by Rev. R.L. Runge. Mary’s memory verse was “Be content with such things as ye have; for He hath said, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5   Mary attended country school and then attended St Paul’s Christian School, graduating with the class of 1944. After the passing of her Uncle and Aunt, Mary moved fromt the farm to the Latimer Manor in 1974. Mary was in the Latimer Manor until October of 2012 when she moved to the Country View Nursing at Hampton.   Mary was a member of the St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Latimer, the Lutheran Layman’s League, the Ladies Mission Society, and enjoyed attending the CAL Over 60s meeting. Mary’s hobbies included doing word puzzles and working on her scrapbook.   
Mary is survived by her nieces, nephews and cousins.  

She is preceded in death by her mother, Laura and her sister, Alma Lindloff.

Arlene R. (Stoffer) Pals

Arlene R. (Stoffer) Pals, 90, of Alexander, Iowa, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the First Reformed Church, 212 Brown Street, Alexander, Iowa with the Rev. Philip A. Arnold presiding.

Interment will be at the Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, March 17, 2014, from 5-7 p.m., at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home Inc., 306 Central Ave. E., Hampton, Iowa.

Arlene was born in Franklin County, Iowa, on February 14, 1924, to Engle and Mattie (Schmidt) Stoffer. She attended Alexander school and graduated in 1942. She enjoyed and was a talented basketball player as well as being offered an academic scholarship to Luther College.

She married Robert A. Pals, September 24, 1943, in the First Reformed Church. She was an active member of the First Reformed Church of Alexander, teaching Sunday School and Catechism.

Arlene and Robert farmed south of Alexander for over forty years. Arlene was a full active partner in the farm operation while being an attentive, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Arlene is survived by her three children; Robert (Susan) Pals, Meservey; Deborah Pals, Chicago and Richard Pals, Alexander; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Irene Stoffer, Belmond; six grandchildren, Tom (Valerie) Pals, Sara Pals, Jason (Heather) Vestweber, Grant (Candace) Pals, Matthew Pals, and Wesley (Jessica) Pals; nine great grandchildren; and loved nieces and nephews.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert A. Pals; brother and sister-in-law Jacob (Bobbie) Stoffer; brother and sister-in-law Lester (Laura) Stoffer; sister and brother-in-law Ann (Harold) Ellefson.

Arlene and her family thank Dr. Brindle, Dr. Colby and Angela Olson of the Belmond Specialty Hospital in Belmond. Heartfelt thanks to the attention, special and tender care that was given by the nurses and staff at the Belmond Specialty Hospital.


Troy "Marie" Behn

January 9, 1937 - March 11, 2014

Troy "Marie" Behn, 77 of Loveland, CO died on March 11, 2014 at Pathways Hospice, McKee Medical Center, Loveland.

She was born January 9, 1937 to Amos and Willie Dee Werning in Dallas, TX Marie married Arthur D Behn on December 13, 1967 in Houston, TX. Marie lived in Loveland, CO since 1979. She had previously lived in Dallas and Houston, TX and Hampton, IA. In addition to caring for and raising her family, Marie worked as a telephone operator, a bookkeeper and in production work. Marie enjoyed being with family. In her younger years she enjoyed cooking, dancing and gardening. Marie has left her family with happy memories and is loved and cherished dearly by all.

Marie is survived by her husband, Arthur of 47 years, sons Ronald (Laura) Peterson, San Antonio, TX, Bradley (Aline) Behn of Loveland, daughter Paula (Mark) Lady of Loveland, 4 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and numerous loving family members.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Amos and Willie, her daughter Monica and her sister Betty Jean. The family offers sincere thanks to Pathways Hospice for the loving care they provided to Marie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pathways Hospice in care of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Loveland.

Memorial services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, March 13 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Loveland. Cremation has been completed.



LLOYD DEAN BONJOUR


Lloyd Dean Bonjour, 73, of Dows, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. He was born on May 5, 1940, in Rockwell, Iowa, to LaVern Nowell and Helen Francis (Mullen) Bonjour. Lloyd graduated from Hansell High School and attended Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. He served his country in the United States Army as a Medical Corpsman, while being stationed in France. Lloyd attended services at the Seventh-day Adventist in Hampton. He enjoyed woodworking, boating, gardening, cooking and his dogs.

Lloyd is survived by his brother Dwayne (Kelly) Bonjour of Idaho Falls, Idaho, brother Lamoyne (Cheryl) Bonjour of Waverly, brother Gene Bonjour of The Philippines, sister Kathy Bonjour of Hampton, three aunts, two uncles, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, parents and one niece.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Church of the Living Word in Hampton, with Pastor Jacob Rahrig officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.

SANDRA BOYD

Sandra “Sandi” Jo (Stickney) Boyd, 58, of Mason City, died surrounded by family on Monday, March 17, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa. Online condolences may be left at www.fullertonfh.com.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. with a one hour prior visitation on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Fullerton Funeral Home. The Rev. Corby Johnson of United Methodist Church in Hampton will be officiating.

Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Fullerton Funeral Home.

Sandi was born on Feb. 28, 1956, to Jess Jr. and Joanne (Young) Stickney in Mason City. She graduated Nora Springs High School in 1974. Sandi married her high school sweetheart, Charles Boyd. To this union two boys were born. Sandi and Charles later separated. Sandi spent most of her life living in the Mason City area. She was a homemaker for many years, taking care of her two boys and the household. Sandi knew how to keep a spotless home and also took very good care of her vehicles. For the past ten plus years Sandi has worked for Wal-Mart in various positions.

Sandi enjoyed collecting anything Coca Cola and doing crafts. She also loved NASCAR and went to several NASCAR races. Sandi loved her truck she drove. More than anything, Sandi loved her children. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Sandi also had very close relationships with many friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two children, Andrew (Sara) Boyd of Arizona and Coty (Crystal) Boyd of Mason City; parents, Joanne (Roger) Nuehring; sisters, Patricia (Jim) Crider and Lisa (Kevin) Tumilson; brother, Gerald Stickney; grandchildren, Dylan Boyd, Andrew Boyd Jr., and Brooklyn Boyd; and many nieces and nephews.

Bernard E. Russell

Bernard E. Russell, age 85, of Dows, passed away Monday March 17, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Memorial services for Bernard E. Russell will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday March 21, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Dows. Pastor Ron Nelson will officiate. Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Visitation for Bernard E. Russell will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday March 20, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Dows and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday. Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows is in charge of arrangements.

Bernard Earl, the son of M. Earl and Mary Denby Russell was born July 27, 1928 on a farm near Webster City. His family moved to the Popejoy/Dows area when Bernard was yet young. Bernard attended and graduated from Dows High School in 1946. After high school, Bernard started farming. It would be his life’s work.

Bernard was united in marriage to Norma Thompson on August 26, 1949 at the Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. The couple first started farming on a farm south of Coulter, where they farmed and lived for 15 years. In January of 1966, Bernard and Norma moved to the farm south of Dows. It was here Bernard was living at the time of his death. 

Bernard served on several boards in the surrounding area. Most notably, he was the Secretary for North Central FS for 17 years, and served on the Coulter Creamery Board. His hobby was working and being outside at the farm. After retirement, Bernard and Norma traveled extensively on bus tours. Bernard enjoyed reading, but his great love was spending time with his family.

Bernard was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dows, where he served the church in numerous capacities.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Norma, four children, Craig (Jeanne) of Dows, David (Janice) of Williams, Donald (Mona) of Prescott Valley, AZ, Jane Plahn (Clay) of LaSalle, CO, eight grandchildren, Denise Froehlich (Chad), Michael Russell, Clint Russell (Erin), Troy Russell, Erin Russell, Nathan Plahn, Jeffrey Plahn, Mary Murphy (Tyler), nine great-grandchildren, Grace, Elizabeth, Savannah, Mollee, Kinnick, Gavin, Kennedy, Ainsley, Clayton, a brother, Larry Russell of Downing Town, PA, a sister, Norma Jean Hill of Clive, step brother, Richard Fibikar (Betty) of Dows, and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Patrick, and a sister, Elizabeth.

Gertrude V. Peyton

Gertrude V. Peyton, age 94, of Dows, passed away Thursday March 13, 2014 Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion.

Funeral services for Gertrude Peyton will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday March 17, 2014 at the United Presbyterian Church in Dows. Pastor Shawn Hill will officiate. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation for Gertrude Peyton will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Sunday March 16, 2014 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Gertrude Vivian Peyton, the daughter of Herman and Marie Sendenfelder Braun, was born on December 6, 1919 near Alexander, Iowa. She attended and graduated from the Alexander High School. Gertrude was united in marriage to Harold Elllis. The couple moved to San Diego, California, when Harold entered the service during World War II. Harold died in the South Pacific during the war. Gertrude then moved back to Iowa. met and married Max Dean Peyton. The couple made their home in Hampton and Dows. Gertrude was living at Dows at the time of her death.

Gertrude worked for Tofte Sand/Gravel as the executive secretary and office manager. The majority of her working life, Gertrude worked for Tofte, until the company closed. Gertrude then worked for several different offices in the area. Gertrude worked for a publisher in Alden until she retired at the age of 62. Gertrude was an avid bowler. Her bowling team did hold various state tournament appearances as well as a state championship. She enjoyed quilting and reading. Gertrude was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Dows, where she was active in the women’s group.

Gertrude is survived by her son: Steven Wayne (Cheryl) Ellis of Clarion, three grandchildren, Joel (Pam) Ellis of Goldfield, Jeffrey Ellis of Kanawha, and Jonathan Ellis of Clarion, two great-grandchildren Joey and Jordan of Goldfield, two brothers and numerous other family and friends.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Harold, second husband, Max Dean, two sons, Terry, in infancy, Rick, and three sisters.

Louise Luetta Roberts
(September 12, 1917 - March 18, 2014)

Louise Roberts, age 96, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday, March 18th, 2014 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services will be Saturday March 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ackley with burial in Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls on Friday and also an hour before services in Saturday.

Louise Luetta Roberts was born on September 12, 1917 in rural Buckeye to Max and Edith (Mitchell) Bonin. She was united in marriage to Don Roberts Sr. on March 17, 1936 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Eldora. Louise farmed with her husband Don and was an avid gardener. She was involved with the Ellis Methodist Church Ladies Aid and the Iowa Falls Thrift Shop. 

Louise is survived by her son Donald (Barbara) Roberts Jr. of Ackley; 4 grandchildren Randell (Donna) Roberts of Ackley, Rosemary (Brian) Broshar of Garner, Rachel (Chris) Diggins of Rockwell, and Jill (Marty) Moore of LaDue, MO; 5 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren Andrew (Ashley) Roberts, Ryan Roberts, Marissa Roberts, Derik Broshar, Nicholas Diggins, Lucas Diggins, Dylan Moore, Beckett Moore and Charley Moore; 17 step-great-grandchildren and a daughter-in-law Donna McManus of Memphis, TN. 

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Gary Roberts; Granddaughter Rhonda; great-granddaughter Heather; four brothers Herman, Carl, Hugo and Otto and two sisters Ethel and Viola
