Mrs. Elizabeth L. “Betty” De Jong

ORANGE CITY -- Mrs. Elizabeth L. “Betty” De Jong, 88, of Orange City, passed from this time into eternity on October 18, 2013, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital. She was lovingly surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, October 22, at 11 a.m., at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink and Mr. Thomas Hydeen will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation was after 4 p.m. on Monday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Betty was born to Albert and Agnes (Dykstra) Giesen, of Orange City, on May 11, 1925. She attended Orange City Christian School from kindergarten through eighth grade, after which she attended high school at Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City.

While there, she was a cheerleader and was invited to play clarinet with the college band. She also sang in the college choir and performed the solo, “Somebody Did a Golden Deed.” She graduated from The Academy in 1942 and attended Northwestern College for one semester.

In 1943, she left college to assist her father at his grocery store as many men were off to war. At the store, she performed multiple tasks, including assembling care packages for persons in the war-devastated Netherlands. She worked at her father’s store until it was sold due to his illness.

Following the war, Betty and Lloyd K. De Jong were united in marriage at First Reformed Church in Orange City on September 26, 1946. They became the proud parents of two children, Myra and Wayne. Betty was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed taking care of her family’s home. In addition, she held various jobs over the years, including working at the co-owned Corner Market and IGA grocery stores, the Capital newspaper, the Sioux County Treasurer’s Office and Toyland at The Village during Christmas. Given her close ties to the war, Betty was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over sixty years.

Throughout her life, Betty enjoyed many different activities. As a child, she loved roller-skating in addition to playing clarinet and singing. Later, she enjoyed knitting baby sweaters, cross-stitching, and reading. Betty was also an excellent baker and was determined to ensure family and friends alike had plenty of cookies to eat. She also spent countless hours playing games with her family, including Yahtzee! and Farkle. Betty always enjoyed life, maintaining her positive outlook and sense of humor in every situation and shared a laugh with everyone she met.

Betty’s faith was center to her life, and she was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church of Orange City. She was a member of the Ruth Circle, but most dear to her heart was singing high soprano in the church choir for over fifty years.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses, Myra and John Bowman of Britt, Iowa, and Wayne De Jong and Lisa Erdos of San Francisco, California; along with her grandchildren, Ryan and Kelly Bowman of Humboldt, Iowa, and Jill Bowman of Edina, Minnesota. She will also be missed by two special nieces, Noreen (Ted) De Hoogh of Sioux Center and Ellen De Jager of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor De Jong and Frances De Jong, both of Orange City; and several other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa.

Helena Marie Prestemon was born February 23, 1922, to Idelia (Grangaard) and Alvin Prestemon. She was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in Waukon. She attended Jefferson School from grades 1-8, where her maternal aunt Olga Grangaard was schoolteacher. She graduated from Waukon Senior High School, and obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology at St. Olaf College in Northfield. She then attended Fairview Nursing School, attaining her cap and her R.N.

On Aug. 9, 1945, she was united in marriage with W. Gordon Smedsrud at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. In her younger years, Marie and her sister Gwen enjoyed singing duets, winning many ribbons in school contests. She continued to enjoy singing as long as she was able, and was a member of the choir in many of the congregations to which she belonged over the years. She also taught Sunday School, and served faithfully in so many ways, in the role of "The Pastor’s Wife," in those congregations, and in the Luther College community.

Marie also loved to garden, and treasured her greenhouse. She was a member of the Decorah Garden Club, and especially liked raising orchids. She also enjoyed the outdoors, with many family camping trips and other outdoor adventures and travel bringing her great pleasure.

In 1985, she and her sister, Gwen, traveled to India to volunteer in Mother Teresa’s homes for the destitute and dying in Kolkata. She was happy to have the opportunity to travel to Norway with her family in 1973. She cherished her Norwegian heritage and was a devoted keeper of family history, and passed that value on to her own family.

Marie loved to sew, cook, do crossword puzzles, play Scrabble and especially to read. Her Bible was the most tattered book in her possession and is marked with many underlined favorite passages. She stayed active in Bible study and attending worship up until the last few months of her life.

From 1977-1987, Marie and Gordon established a retail music store/antique business in Decorah, “The Emporium,” and Marie was the “go-to” lady for the latest vinyl releases and ran the store while Gordon made the rounds to auctions.

Marie was a loving and devoted wife to her husband of 58 years, Gordon, and took enormous pleasure in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Gordon’s death in 2004, she moved to Cornerstone Assisted Living in Mason City, where she met and married George Huber in August of 2007. George passed away in April of 2009.

However much Marie loved and cherished her family and friends, her highest love and devotion was to her Lord.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Rick Smedsrud of Chapin, South Carolina; daughter, Rachel (Rae) Busch and her husband, Kevin, of Garden City, Minn.; grandchildren, Chris Smedsrud and his wife, Tricia, of Roseville, Minn., Karin Smedsrud of Northfield, Minn., Ashley (James) Hummel of Iowa City, Molly Smedsrud of Minneapolis, and Sarah Busch of Madelia, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Kirstyn Schmidt of Le Center, Minn., Jacob Schmidt of Le Center, Minn., Marisa Smedsrud of Roseville, Minn., Abegail Smedsrud of Roseville, Minn., Taylor Smedsrud of Northfield, Minn., and Kalvin Hummel of Iowa City; loving family members of the George Huber family; sisters-in-law, Clarice Ebner of Preston, Minn., and Marian Smedsrud of Waukon; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon; her second husband, George Huber; her sister, Gwen; and a granddaughter, Emily.
