Sharon D. Sandry, the daughter of William Benjiman and Tena Florence (Gruis) Sandry, was born December 12, 1948, at the Belmond Hospital. She was the youngest of four children born to this union which included her three brothers, Donald, Calvin and Marvin. Sharon attended Klemme High School, graduating with the Class of 1967. She continued her education at the Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

She had worked for a number of years in the poultry industry in Alexander, Iowa. In more recent years Sharon had been employed in the convenience stores in Belmond, spending three years at Casey's General Store, and then the last seven years prior to retiring last year she was employed at the Belmond Kum & Go Store location. Sharon was very much a people person and enjoyed her years in these two stores. She was always welcoming to the customers and enjoyed many conversations and a bit of mutual pokes and laughter between many of them.

Since she retired, she had mentioned on various occasions how she missed the interactions with her co-workers and the regulars and strangers who were patrons at the stores.

She enjoyed the simple things of life such as an evening of solitude curled on the couch with one of her cats and a good book. In recent years she had a great love for her Angora cat "Sassy," which she often referred to as "Sassy Lu." Her reading pleasure was mostly around mystery and suspense novels, but she also enjoyed reading about daily happenings in the world and looked forward to seeing what the latest happenings were in the entertainment business.

Sharon also looked forward to decorating her home for the various holidays and had a bountiful collection of cat photos, stuffed kittens and other feline collectibles. Sharon was always up for a trip shopping and had been looking forward to spending her retirement years doing a bit of traveling and getting together with old friends and family.

Donald Gene Skogen

RAKE -- Donald Gene Skogen, 71, of Rake, passed away on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at St Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota He had a long battle with MS and then got a blood infection, which caused his kidneys to shut down. He was lucky to have all of his immediate family with him sometime during the four days he spent at the hospital.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, with Pastor Terry Mahnke officiating. There will be an hour visitation prior to the service. Burial will follow at West Cemetery in Rake.

Visitation will be held on Friday evening Oct. 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake.

Don was born on July 9, 1942, at his parents' home in rural Rake, to Nordahl and Inez (Varland) Skogen. He was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He attended and graduated from Rake High School in 1960. On Aug. 4, 1962, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Askeland. They were blessed to spend 51 years together and from this union they were blessed with three girls, Tammy, Nancy and Julie.

For most of Don's adult life he was a farmer. He was even a salesman for Funk's G seed for many years. Later during his farming career MS took away the ability for Don to use his legs but he was still very active in what was going on in and around the field. He would call himself the manager of the farm and in the end he enjoyed hauling the meals to the field.

Don was diagnosed with MS in 2005. He had already been accustomed to being in his wheelchair years prior, but now he knew why. He never let it bother him and had a smile on his face. People would ask him how he was and his response was, “There's room for improvement.”

Don enjoyed his sports teams and talking to many about statistics, scores and placing a casual bet for $5 or pizza. Many bets were never paid back. He just loved the phone calls he could give after the game and even the ones he received.

He also had a passion to be with his family. Having three daughters meant that boys would come later. He loved giving his son-in-laws “5 minute jobs”. Family gatherings were many and the last one was spent in Rochester with all of his family around him. What a legacy he has left for all of us.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn; three daughters Tammy (Jerry) Zabel, Blue Earth, Minnesota, Nancy (Todd) Hanevik, Blue Earth, Minnesota, Julie (Tim) Weaver, Buffalo Center; six grandchildren, Jamie (Ben) Reverts, Tony Boehm, Brandon (Kristen) Hanevik, Brady Hanevik, Tanner Weaver and Colin Weaver; 4 great grandchildren Peyton and Kyler Reverts and Ethan and Dylan Hanevik, sister Carol Thompson and brother Merle (Junice) Skogen, and many nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Norman, infant brother and sister.
