William Hurmence
U.S. Army   WWII

William Hurmence, 95, formerly from Tripoli, died on Friday, October 4, 2013, at Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 10, at the Sumner United Methodist Church, 115 Pleasant St., Sumner, Iowa.

William was born in Sumner, Iowa, on June 16, 1918, the son of William Edward and Irma (Haag) Hurmence. He was the third of eight children born to them. He grew up in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School in 1935.

He continued his education at Gates Business College where he excelled in typing. Upon graduation he could type 100 words per minute. After graduation he worked a short time at Rath Packing Company before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps where he helped construct Beeds Lake in Hampton, Iowa.

Bill was called home when his father died unexpectedly at the age of 52. After his father's death, his brother Ralph took his father's place in the Hurmence Telephone Company and Bill moved to Fredericksburg to manage Ralph's Gamble Store there.

On November 26, 1941, Bill married Marie Kelsey at her parents' home in rural Tripoli. He was drafted into the Army in February 1942 and served until October, 1945. Most of his service was spent overseas as a company clerk, following General George S. Patton through Africa, Sicily and Italy. During the later years of the war, Bill was responsible for the pay, food, clothing and transportation for over 100 Italian civilians employed by the American War Department.

Upon his return from the service, Bill and Marie settled in Tripoli. He was employed by Interstate Power Company and then Warner Electric. In 1958, Bill decided to go into business for himself and started Hurmence Electric. His business of farm, home and commercial wiring thrived for many years until his health forced him into retirement in 1979.

After Bill's retirement, he and Marie spent 12 winters in North Port, Florida. Summers found them at their cabin at Clear Lake's Methodist Camp, the site of many happy family reunions. In 2005, the couple moved to the Willows in Mason City and sold the home they had built in 1946.

Marie passed away in 2009, and in 2011 Bill moved to Jacksonville, Florida to his daughter's home, where she and Clint lovingly cared for him. In May 2013, Bill moved back to Iowa to be near his daughter Cathy and her family in Marion.

Bill loved to travel and instilled that love in his children. He also loved music. He played the clarinet from childhood to shortly before his death. He had a wonderful ear as well as the gift of improvisation. He loved the challenge of any new technology. He spent many hours Skyping with his family and enjoying email and Instant Messaging. Bill and Marie were avid Hawkeye fans, holding season tickets for many years.

Bill was a member of the American Legion, served on the Tripoli City Council for eight years and the Library Board for many years. He played clarinet for several years with the Tripoli City Band and for 50 years with the Little German Band.

Bill was deeply loved by his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his children, Laura (Clinton) Burrow, Jacksonville, Fla., Catherine (Allan) Alcock, Marion, Iowa, and Joel Hurmence, Fort Collins, Colorado; four grandchildren, Benjamin Burrow, Nicole (Jon) Huff, Amanda (Eric) Freese and Betsy (Josiah) Bushlack; seven great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Jaysaunt, Tierin, Syler, Eliah, Evan and Jonah; and many nephews and nieces.

Bill was preceded in death by parents, his wife, a great-grandson, Max Bushlack, and his seven siblings, Ralph, Norman, Jeannette, James, Wayne, Donald and Gerald.

An online guestbook can be found at cedarmemorial.com. Memorials will be used to promote instrumental music education and can be directed to his daughter Catherine Alcock, 3790 28th Ave., Marion, IA 52302.

Lorraine M. Korth

FOREST CITY -- Lorraine M. Korth, age 88, of Forest City, died Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Inurnment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be designated to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Good Samaritan Society or Hospice of North Iowa.

Lorraine Mae Korth was born August 6, 1925, to Herbert and Anna (Haase) Kling in Taylor, Wisconsin. The family later moved to Augusta, Wisconsin, where Herbert worked as a blacksmith.

Lorraine loved school from the beginning and graduated from Augusta High School at the age of 16. Had the times allowed, she wanted to become a teacher like her brothers Walt and Ken.

On July 1, 1944, Lorraine was married to Bud Tyler in Great Bend, Kansas. For many of that generation, WW II disrupted many plans and the young couple was no exception. Bud Tyler's B29 was shot down over Tokyo Bay and he perished helping others on the crew.

The young widow and her infant son, Tim, had to face a new future. On June 22, 1947, Lorraine and Bill Korth were married at Augusta, Wisconsin. Three more sons were born to this union, Mike, Chuck and Ken.

In 1965 the family moved to Forest City, Iowa, to establish Bill's Red Owl, now known as Bill's Family Foods. Lorraine was an integral partner in this endeavor.

Lorraine was a student of the Bible, leading many Circle Bible study lessons for Martha Circle at Immanuel Lutheran Church, was a Sunday School teacher, Confirmation instructor, and instructor of pie squares 101. She had a special love for babies and dogs and spoke their language. Many a little one nodded off to sleep listening to her tune "Diddle-de-Deddle -de-Diddle -de-Dum." A nap was a victory for Grandma Lorraine! Halloween was a favorite holiday, and Lorraine was known in her neighborhood for her homemade popcorn balls.

Her circle of friends grew ever larger and no one sent out more birthday cards than Lorraine. Truly she loved people and they loved her. She had a servant heart and a heart for people everywhere she went.

She traveled many places when Bill was at her side -- Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and Canada fishing trips. After the family New Year's celebration, winters were spent in the sunshine of Mesa, Arizona. Family trips to Laughlin were memorable for many.

"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12. Lorraine's heart was wise, and kind, and brimming over with love for her family. The lessons of life were learned well. She will live on in the hearts of her family forever.

Lorraine is survived by her sons and their spouses: Tim Tyler (Cheryl) Spooner, Wisconsin, Mike Korth (Carolynn) Forest City, Chuck Korth (Ruth) Cottage Grove, Oregon, and Ken Korth (Cindy) Forest City. Ten grandchildren: Dan Tyler (Jan), Deb Lawrence (Dale), Kim Petersen (Mike), Susan Blaha (Dave), Aaron Korth (Shelby), Emmy Pierson (Sam), Leif Korth, Jonathan Korth (Rachel Schutz), Laura Aykroyd (Tim), and Amanda Korth. Sixteen great-grandchildren: Andrea Blaeser (Mathew), Angela LaPorte (Adam), Jessica Maki (Shaun), Kayla Smith, Jeffery Lawrence, Justin Lawrence, Jennifer Lawrence, Adler Petersen, Will Petersen, Max Petersen, Ben Blaha, Josh Blaha, Hannah Blaha, Addison Korth, Colton Pierson, and Evan Aykroyd. Also two great-great-grandchildren: Colin LaPorte and Carter Tempel, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Bud Tyler (1945) and Bill Korth (1993); three brothers, Walt Kling (Charlotte), Hilbert Kling (Gladys), Ken Kling (Myrt); and two sisters, Elaine Carney (Bob), and Phyllis Newhouse (Bud). Blessed be the memory of Lorraine Kling Tyler Korth.
