Edward A. Branstad

LELAND — Edward A. Branstad, 89, of Leland, died Friday, July 26, 2013, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 29, at Waldorf College, Waldorf Atrium, 106 S. 6th St. in Forest City, with Monsignor Frank Bognanno, Pastor Jon Rollefson and Pastor Joyce Schmidt officiating. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery in Leland.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, July 28, at Waldorf College, Salveson Hall in Forest City, and will continue one hour prior to services at the Atrium.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of North Iowa.

Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City is in charge of arrangements.

Edward was born on March 9, 1924, to Helmer and Hazel (Peterson) Branstad, and grew up on the farm that has been in his family for 130 years. Edward attended Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland, where he was confirmed. Upon graduation from Leland High School, Edward attended Waldorf College in Forest City. He then returned to his family farm with his wife, Rita, where they were both lifelong farmers.

His sons recall that after the family would work the farm in a typical 14-hour day, Edward’s regular comment when they walked in the house was, “We didn’t get much done today. We will give it heck tomorrow.”

That work ethic was shown repeatedly. During the mid-century drought and farm crisis, Edward and Rita helped the farm survive by taking second jobs. Again, during the farm crisis of the 1980s, Edward took a second job working as the county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) director. After leaving the office he would return to the farm, often working until midnight.

When Edward turned 70, he vowed to work no more than 10-hour days. He never met that goal.

Friends and family note that Edward would help anyone. He would stop to help any stranded motorist. He mowed the neighbors’ lawns and he took time to teach farmers how to be in ASCS compliance.

As Edward entered his 80s, he found he was able to relax when he and Enolia traveled to Donna, Texas, where they spent their winters. His family notes, however, that when he returned most of his stories were about helping neighbors fix up their homes or about traveling to Mexico to do missionary work.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Rita (Garland) Branstad.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Enolia Wing Branstad; two sons, Terry (Chris) Branstad of Des Moines and Monroe (Lanette) Branstad of Leland; grandchildren, Christine (David Phillips) Branstad, Eric (Adrianne) Branstad, Allison (Jerry) Costa, Heidi (Tom) Aitchison, Jordan Branstad, Marcus (Nicole) Branstad, Andrew (Keniesa) Branstad and David Branstad; great-grandchildren, Samuel Branstad Phillips, Thomas Branstad Phillips, Mackenzie Branstad, Madison Branstad, Gabriel Branstad, Bridget Branstad, Maximillian Aitchison, Addison Aitchison, Sofia Costa, Alexis Branstad and Estelle Branstad; and three siblings, Carl (Lorraine) Branstad, Helene Iverson and Hubert (Fern) Branstad.

Clifford commenced his career as a truck driver with Michaelson Trucking of Mason City, Iowa, and continued driving semis for Decker Transport of Fort Dodge, Iowa, after they acquired the company. He eventually retired from the profession in 2008.

Cliff was a very social man who could easily strike up a conversation with both friends and acquaintances. He truly never met a stranger. Cliff not only looked forward to cheering them all on, but his outgoing and friendly character would once again captivate those around him as he would visit with others and build many new friendships.

Clifford was very much a family man and enjoyed his roles as husband, father and grandpa. He loved classic country music, old Westerns on TV and fishing. He looked forward to fishing excursions to Minnesota with his brother, Dallas. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Cliff, or “Curly,” as he was known on the highways and by-ways during his trucking years, will be remembered by all who knew him as a gentleman who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including family, friends, fellowship and fun. He will be missed for his friendly smile, warm welcoming hello, and concern for well-being of others, and that magnetic smile and the twinkle in his eyes.

Orval Lee Henderson

Orval Lee Henderson, 78, passed from this life on January 19, 2013.

Orval was born on September 9, 1934, to Duncan and Edith (Smith). He was the sixth of nine children.

Their home was in Winterset, Iowa, where they farmed until relocating to their farm near Dumont, Iowa.

Orval had many fond memories of his childhood home, in Winterset, particularly, sliding down the long sloping hills in the winter on make shift sleds. Orval graduated from Dumont high school. He met his future wife when she rode to the farm on horseback, delivering dinner to her family members. As was common then, neighbors assisted each other during the harvesting season. Upon seeing Beverly Hudson, he said to himself, “I am going to marry her someday.” Less than two years passed when they married. He spent their marriage as in love with his bride as he was that first moment.

The couple farmed in Dougherty, then Nora Springs, settling in Rudd, where they purchased a small farm. Orval also worked at Armour, until retirement in 1996.

Beverly was a baptized Jehovah’s Witness, as was Orval’s mother. He looked forward to the visits from the faithful servants after Beverly’s death in May of 1996, until his own.

Orval and Beverly were blessed with five children. The eldest, Diana, died as a toddler from an accidental injury.

Surviving children and their spouses are: Kenneth and Jane (Bielefeld) of Floyd, Michael and Marilyn (Chrencik) of Orchard, James and Melinda (Miller) of Little Cedar, Sandra and Rich Onken of Orchard. Orval is survived by nine grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

Orval was preceded in death by his parents: Duncan and Edith; his wife, Beverly; their daughter, Diana; his eight siblings: Russell, Emmett, Carl, Harold, Glenn, Hazel, Loran and Lucinda.

Our family would like to thank the staff of the IOOF home in Mason City, for the personal attention and loving care they gave to Orval in his last weeks.

Orval’s ashes will be buried Sunday, August 4th, at 2 p.m. at the West Fork Cemetery, south of Dougherty. The cemetery is located on Vine, one half mile south of 255th Street, west of Greene.

Prayer will be offered by a member of the Kingdom Hall.
