 Larry D. Froning
U.S. Air Force

Sheffield — Larry D. Froning, 76, of Chapin, passed away July 15, 2013.

Funeral services at Retz Funeral Home, Sheffield will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 18. The Rev. Lynne Hanna will lead the service and Larry’s cremated remains will later return to his farm in rural Chapin.

Larry Dean Froning was born on November 24, 1936, in Hampton, Iowa, to Josephina (Berg) and Harold Froning. Raised by Fred and Nora Froning and Phil and Ella Pascoe, he graduated from Mason City High School. Shortly afterward, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Northern Minnesota. He was a radar operator, monitoring the Northern border for USSR planes at the height of the Cold War. There, he met Arlene Galbraith and the two married in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on September 5, 1959. Soon after completing his service, the couple moved to Iowa, settling in Aplington and Austinville. In Austinville, they raised three children: Allen, Sue and Dixie.

Larry worked at John Deere Works, Waterloo, for thirty years and was a proud member of the union. He was also a devoted follower of his children’s sports teams, hunter, farmer and fisherman. Always willing to try something new on the farm, he raised peacocks and guineafowl, triticale and amaranth, along side conventional crops.

In 1991 he and Arlene moved back to one of the farms Larry grew up on, west of Chapin. After thirty years at John Deere, he retired and was able to devote his full attention to farming. He worked hard to improve the farm, planting many trees, protecting the creek in his pasture, and taking steps to improve the soil passed down to him. He raised Longhorn and Angus cattle and enjoyed meeting friends and neighbors at cattle auctions and the Chapin elevator.

An avid gardener, he always planted a large garden and grew enough potatoes to feed his family and friends. Larry put his family, friends and farm first. He was happiest on the farm and with his family.

David’s passion in life was his music. An avid guitar player since his teenage years he kept with his practicing in order to perfect. Photography was another interest that David pursued with vivacity. It was not only the capturing of the moment of the photo, but what he could do with the photograph afterward to make it better, make it fun or just make someone laugh. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 22, also at Sacred Heart Oratory, for friends and family.

Kenneth, son of Cecilia (Klinkhammer) and Alfred Hackenmiller, was born December 20, 1943, in Osage, Iowa. He grew up in the area and graduated from Visitation High School in 1962. Kenneth served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966 and was stationed near Frankfurt, Germany, until his honorable discharge from service.

He spent many years on the family farm and in 1973 moved to Rochester, Minnesota, to begin a long career in the flooring installation trade. A transition in 1987 to Rochester Community and Technical College marked the start of 20 years of service at the college until his retirement in 2007.

His life is highlighted by time spent with family and friends who always knew he would lend a helping hand. Ken loved the outdoors and shared that by pheasant hunting with his sons. Golf, camping and family gatherings were all things he enjoyed.

Recent years found him at tractor pulls winning trophies for his efforts. He was always glad to see family and friends who lived nearby and those far away.

Kenneth will be missed by his sons, Christopher (Sarah), Jason (Jenny Maynard), of Rochester, Minnesota, and William Sperry, Suanne Sperry Balch (Brandon) grandson, Parker Balch, all of Florida; his sister, Betty Retterath (Barney); brothers, Chuck (Shirley), Leon (Teresa), Paul (Rita); sister-in-law, Joanne Hackenmiller Popp; and many nieces, nephews and their families.
