Betty Cathryn Johnson

NEVADA, Iowa – Betty Cathryn Johnson, 88, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013. Per her wishes, a graveside service will be held at noon on Monday, July 8, in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery, Nevada, Iowa, with Pastor Tom Poppe officiating.

Betty was born on April 5, 1925, in Ames to Linville and Mable (Told) White. Growing up in Nevada, she sang and danced at various events in the area. Betty was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church and belonged to the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1943 and attended Iowa State University where she was a home economics major. Betty also taught dance and was a member of the Chicago National Association of Dancing Masters. She also helped out at the family business, White Jewelry Store.

On April 27, 1947, Betty married Wendell Johnson in Nevada, Iowa. In 1950 they moved to Clear Lake where they owned and operated Patterson Jewelry. While in Clear Lake, they were members of the First Congregational Church. In 1984, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, to be near her children. In the late ’80s, Betty worked part-time at a store called West of Dallas.

She loved doing crafts, reading, and going to antique and thrift shops. An avid quilter, Betty belonged to the Desert Quilters of Nevada, quilt circles Scarlet Bonnets (where she was called “Queen Mum”), Bluebirds and every other Monday Night Quilters. Along with her daughters she was a member of the Stephens College Alumnae Club of Southern Nevada. Other organizations and clubs she belonged to were the Order of Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi Society, T.T.T. and Progress Club.

Betty is survived by her children, Martha Gennarelli, Wendell Johnson and Mary (Ken) Coxson-Jones; three grandchildren, Carissa Coxson, Chandler Coxson and Camden Coxson; and a great-grandson, Grayson Coxson, all of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister, Sandra (Bob) Leeper of Nevada, Iowa; brother, Jim (MaryAnn) White of Tucson, Ariz; sister-in-law, Lavon Tjelmeland of McCallsburg; and many nieces and nephews along with their families.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wendell, in-laws Kenneth and Beulah Johnson, and son-in-law Tony Gennarelli.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada, Iowa, has been entrusted with the care of Betty and her family.


Leland Richard Muhlenbruck

LATIMER – Leland Richard Muhlenbruck, 72, of Latimer passed away with his family at his side at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City on June 30, 2013.

Funeral service will be held at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Visitation for Leland will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, Iowa. Burial will take place at the Marion Center Cemetery in rural Latimer. Memorials can be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer to be used toward the purchase of a new church organ. Pastor John Byrne will be officiating

Leland was born on June 17, 1941, to Alva and Rebecca (Koenen) Muhlenbruck. He was raised on the family farm in rural Chapin and graduated from Chapin High School in 1959.

Leland married his wife, Judith (Schaffer), on July 9, 1960, at St Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer, Iowa. They spent the rest of their lives together living in Latimer.

Leland spent his life in the grain elevator business. He loved his work at Latimer Grain, D&J Feeds and FC Cooperative. Even in his retirement he continued to work at the elevator handling corn and fertilizer.

Leland was a member of the United Church of Christ in Latimer. He also served as a member of the Latimer Fire Department for several years. Leland was a youth baseball coach in Latimer for many years, coaching the Latimer Twins Little League team and the Babe Ruth Latimer Lynx. He was a mentor to many young men through this service, including his own three sons. He also volunteered for many years on the football chain gang at CAL High School.

Later in life, Leland grew to love his grandchildren. He and Judy could be seen at ball games and activities all over Iowa and Minnesota. He was always their biggest fan. No matter where you saw Leland, you always knew you would get a piece of candy. He loved to make others smile and always looked out for those less fortunate than himself. Leland loved his dog, Hannah.

Leland is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 53 years, Judith; three sons, Kirk (Lori) of Northfield, Minnesota, Trent Muhlenbruck of Ankeny, Iowa, and Tom (Tami) Muhlenbruck of Ankeny, Iowa. He is survived by 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a sister, Lola Furman of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Berniece Crabb.

CLEAR LAKE — Tom J. Treloar, 83, of rural Clear Lake died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

NORTHWOOD — Wilma Bernice Helgeland, 91, Northwood, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A memorial service for Wilma will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, with Pastor Barbara Wills officiating. DOWS — Walter L. Moore, 77, of Dows, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at his home in Dows.

Marjorie H. Brumm

OSAGE — Marjorie H. Brumm, age 84, of Osage, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Faith Home in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Msgr. John Hemann officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Marjorie was born July 13, 1928, in Bordulac, North Dakota, the daughter of Joseph and Emilia (Popelka) Pitra.

She graduated from Osage Community High School in 1946. On June 23, 1951, Marjorie married Clarence Brumm at the Little Flower Chapel, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Marjorie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Guild, American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary and Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bridge and any and all card games.

Marjorie is survived by her son, Richard (Karen) Brumm, Osage; seven grandchildren, Eric (Kim) of Nevada, Iowa, Andrew (Katie) of Osage, Marita of Mason City, Patti of Richardson, Texas, Nina of Dubuque, Shelly of Osage and Isaac of Osage; great-grandchildren Dex of Dubuque, Tucker of Osage and Victor of Nevada; two great-grandchildren expected in 2013; and sister, Stacia Balsley of Canton, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence in 2012; her son, Joseph Brumm, in 1965; and four brothers and three sisters.

ORCHARD, Iowa — Jim Onken, age 87, of Osage and formerly of Orchard, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Orchard Cemetery in Orchard with military honors at the grave by Orchard American Legion Post 641, Osage V.F.W. Post 7920 and Osage American Legion Post 278.

Jim was born November 5, 1925, at Orchard, Iowa, the son of Enno Johnson and Jennie Talina Wilhamena (Rademacher) Onken. He attended school in Orchard. Jim served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On July 3, 1948, he married Ruth Kuderling. She passed away on March 11, 1993. Jim married Jean Foxen on June 13, 1998. He was a farmer in the Orchard area. Jim was a member of the Orchard American Legion and the Osage V.F.W. He loved dancing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jean Onken of Osage; children, Robert (Dee) Onken of Osage, Gloria (Russ) Hein of Little Cedar, Karen (Art) Gillitzer of Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, Sharen (Duane) Larsen of Chula Vista, California, and Betty (Lennis) Krones of Mason City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Art Onken of Osage, and sister, Donna Onken of Omaha, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth; a son, Tom in 1973; a grandson, Scott Meyer in 2001; his siblings: Martha Miller, Walter Onken, John Onken, Edward “Weasel” Onken, George Onken, Frank Onken, Eno Onken, Keith Onken, Dorothy Onken and Jennie Adams.

Betty Lou Cook

ROCHESTER, Minnesota – Mrs. Betty Lou Cook, 87, of Rochester, (originally from Mason City, Iowa), died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital.

Betty was born May 21, 1926, to Lloyd and Cecil Bare (Schear) in Geneva, Iowa. She married Reed Calvin Cook at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on Sept. 4, 1946. Betty was a teacher at Mother Goose Nursery School for many years in Mason City. She was active in the community and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Betty enjoyed her gardens, her neighborhood walks, and especially loved spending time with her family and close friends.

Survivors include her sister, Dora Mahn (Dale) of Mason City, Iowa; her three daughters: Ellen Lichty of Rochester, Minnesota, Ann Montgomery (Bob) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Mary Turner (Donn) of Fort Collins, Colo; Grandchildren include Brent Lichty and Daniel Lichty of Rochester, Minnesota, Laura Montgomery of Birmingham, Alabama, and Kyle Turner of New York City, New York, Leah Turner of Denver, Colorado, and Kara Turner of Boulder, Colorado. Reed Calvin Lichty is her first great-grandchild. Her husband, Reed Cook, and her sister, Maxine Kittleson, preceded her in death.

Mahn Family Funeral Home in Rochester, Minnesota, is in charge of arrangements. The family plans a celebration of her life in Mason City, Iowa, in November.

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA — Rachel Marty, born Emma Rachel Hurt, passed away on June 12, 2013, in Burnsville, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sophocles D. Marty. She is survived by two sisters, four children, and six grandchildren.

Rachel was born on June 7, 1932, in Bristol, Virginia., and grew up on a farm. She attended William and Mary College, where she met her future husband. They moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1960. Rachel enjoyed leading Girl Scout day camps, tutoring in reading and math, weaving, and supporting important causes. She loved animals and reading.

Charles Herman Blum was born Jan. 10, 1921, in rural Rockwell, the son of Charles Albert and Mabel (Zirbel) Blum. He attended country schools. On Dec. 17, 1944, Charles married Berniece Halfpap at her parent’s home in rural Alexander. They were blessed with four children: Roger Alan, Elaine Jean, Donna Kaye and Julie Joy. The couple farmed 2 years at Dougherty and 15 years south of Mason City before moving to Thornton in 1962, where they retired on the farm in 1985.

Charles was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockwell.

Charles leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 68 years: Berniece Blum of Thornton; 3 daughters: Elaine Bram and husband Steven of Thornton, Donna Steenhard and husband Wayne of Mason City, and Julie Devitt and husband Scott of Vista, California; 9 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 1 sister: June Blum Boyle of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents: C.A. and Mabel Blum; 1 son: Roger Alan Blum; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Rosemary Blum and Erma McIlrath; two brothers: Dean Blum and infant brother.

David R. Waddingham

GARNER — David R. Waddingham, 75, of Garner died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Revs. Scott Kozisek and Mark Lavrenz officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

David Ralph Waddingham, the son of John and Reva (Elder) Waddingham, was born April 30, 1938, in Hampton. He graduated from Klemme High School in 1956.

On Aug. 23, 1959, he married Marie Meyer at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner. They lived in Garner where Dave worked as the sexton for Concord Township Cemetery for 40 years and remained involved when his son, Mark, took over the position.

Dave also owned and operated Waddingham Construction in Garner and served as a bus driver in his younger years for the Garner-Hayfield Community School District. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was proud to have accomplished 31 years of sobriety by living “One Day at a Time.”

He served on the Garner Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years and the Garner-Hayfield School Board.

Dave is survived by his wife, Marie, of Garner; four children: Shelley Witting of Garner, Sheila (Keith) Sperr of Garner, Sherry (Michael) Loftus of Charles City and Mark (Liz) Waddingham of Garner; eight grandchildren: Sarah and Molly Sperr, Ryan, Nolan and Nicole Loftus and Megan, Brooke and Ben Waddingham; four brothers: Bill (Rosalie) Waddingham of Garner, Tom Waddingham of Thornton, Bruce (Cheryl) Waddingham of Rutherfordton, North Carolina, and Ray Waddingham of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Rick Witting; sister, Ellen Sobek; brother-in-law, Roger Sobek; and sister-in-law, Janice Waddingham.

Gene Nack

GRAFTON — Gene Nack, age 76, of Grafton, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 8, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with Pastor Solveig A.H. Zamzow officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Gene was born Aug. 4, 1936, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Carl and Esther (Tesch) Nack. He attended country school and graduated from Grafton High School.

Gene married Frances Urbatsch on May 18, 1957, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. To this union three children were born. Gene and Frances farmed together in the Grafton area. Frances passed away on Nov. 19, 1992.

On Aug. 20, 1998, he married Rose Marie Lewis at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township.

Gene served on the North Iowa Co-op Board and was an active lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Gene enjoyed farming and watching things grow. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, trips to Montana and spending time with family and friends.

Gene is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Nack of Grafton; his children, Brian (Gina) Nack of Grafton, Blair (Michelle) Nack of Square Butte, Montana, and Beth (Larry) Davidson of Des Moines; four grandchildren: Makae, Coya, Cassie and Kylynn Nack; three step-children; five step-grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Schroeder of Osage; brother-in-law, Darrold Walling of Lucan, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Frances Nack; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth (Lloyd) Beneke, Gertie (Herb) Kroneman, Alpha Walling; and brother-in-law, Robert Schroeder.
