William Carey

Bancroft — Funeral Mass for William Carey will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Bancroft with a rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and a Scripture prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

William Malcolm Carey was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Bernard Ignatious and Mary Ruth (Bliton) Carey. He grew up in Northwood, Iowa, graduating from Northwood High School in 1943. He then attended Iowa State College (University) where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and graduated in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in poultry husbandry.

Bill worked beside his father in managing Northwood Produce and Hatchery for a short time and also went on to earn a master’s degree in poultry breeding from Oklahoma A&M College (OSU) in 1951. He then held a variety of positions in insurance, real estate and sales management.

In 1960, Bill met the love of his life, Julia “Julie” Vega, at a party thrown by a mutual friend. They jitterbugged their way through a four-year courtship and were married on April 4, 1964, in Algona, Iowa.

Also in 1964, Bill began working at Welp Hatchery in Bancroft, Iowa, where he was eventually promoted to geneticist and director of research and development. Bill and Julie made their home in Bancroft and raised their three daughters there over the next 45 years.

In 1987, changing times brought a new career opportunity for Bill when he became Bancroft’s first city administrator, a position he held until his retirement in 1991.

Civic-minded with a strong sense of community, Bill gave willingly of his time and talents. He was a 13-year member of the North Kossuth School Board, and a 12-year member of the Kossuth Regional Health Center Board of Trustees, including a stint as chairman. In addition, he served on the St. John Parish Council, was a longtime member of the Kossuth County Republicans, and co-chaired Gov. Branstad’s re-election campaign in 1986.

He served as a poultry judge at the Kossuth County Fair for many years, was active in the Bancroft Rotary Club and was a member of the Kossuth County Economic Development Commission.

Bill loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid reader — particularly anything financial or investment-related. He also enjoyed dancing to big band music, the Minnesota Vikings, Sunday trips to Mason City with Julie, and all things Iowa State. He was a proud gardener for many years and grew some of the biggest and best tomato plants in town. His sharp wit and dry sense of humor provided many laughs to his family and friends over the years.

Bill passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Country Manor Memory Care in Davenport, Iowa. He was 87.

He is survived by three daughters: Eileen (Mike) Smith of Davenport, Iowa, Cecilia Carey of Shellsburg, Iowa, and Mary (Peter) Adam of New Hope, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Brian and Austin Smith and Julia Adam; his “older” twin sister, Rosa Thompson of Bettendorf, Iowa; his “kid” sister, Mary Scroggin of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; two daughters from a previous marriage: Pam and Kim, who never left his heart; and many nieces and nephews who will all cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving and dedicated wife, Julie, in April 2009; son-in-law, Tom Dabler; brother-in-law, Richard Thompson; and his faithful feline friend, Scruffy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association — Greater Iowa Chapter.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and indebtedness to Bill’s “family” of caregivers at Country Manor. Your kindness, love and compassion are a blessing to us all.
