James V. “Jake” Corrough, Jr.

LOMBARD, ILLINOIS — James V. “Jake” Corrough, Jr., of Lombard, Illinois, died in his home on April 4, 2013, the day before his 73rd birthday.

He was born in Lake Forest, Illinois, to James V. Corrough and Mary (Roberts) Corrough on April 5, 1940.

He spent much of his childhood in Mason City, Iowa, and graduated as valedictorian from Mason City High School in 1958.

He attended Beloit College, and then graduated from Iowa State University in 1963 with a degree in industrial engineering.

He married Evelyn “Bunny” Bracken in 1966, and they settled in Lombard, Illinois, where they lived for almost 45 years.

Jake worked for The Nielsen Company, in various roles, for over 30 years. He was an active member of their “FAN Club” (Friends of Art Nielsen Club) after he retired.

Jake was a rabid Chicago Bears fan, and one of his greatest memories was flying to New Orleans to see the Bears win Super Bowl XX in 1986. But he loved all sports, especially high school sports — he continued to attend high school football games long after his own children graduated high school, and even freelanced as a high school sports reporter for his local newspapers.

He also loved music and sang with the West Towns Barbershop Chorus for many years, including 1987 when the chorus won an international competition in Hartford. He sang in several award-winning Barbershop quartets. He could spend hours playing the piano by ear, usually old jazz and rock standards.

His moods were predicable based on Bears wins and losses, and discernible based on the amount of time he spent playing the piano. A Bears win usually meant an evening full of great music.

He delighted in the sports and musical achievements of his five grandchildren, attending as many of their games and concerts as he could.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Corrough, daughter Sara Teppema (Jeff) of La Grange Park, sons James (Rachel) of La Grange and William (Elaine) of Temecula, California; grandchildren Aidan (17), Cecilia (14), Blaine (14), Jackson (12) and Molly (10); and sister Nancy Taylor (Robert).

A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 13, in Lombard, Illinois.
