There was never a garage sale Carol could just drive by and needed the bumper sticker, "This car brakes for all Garage Sales." She enjoyed many an afternoon playing cards with the gals from Rudd. Jack J. Buehner
U.S. Army Air Corps   WWII

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jack Junior Buehner, 90, formerly of Mason City, died suddenly and unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at his home in Daytona Beach, Fla.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated.

A memorial service will be held in Mason City at a later date. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Anyone wishing to give a memorial in his honor may want to consider giving to First United Methodist Church in Port Orange, Fla.

Jack Junior Buehner was born Oct. 16, 1921, the long-awaited and much-loved youngest child and only son of John and Adelia (Stufflebeam) Buehner of Waterloo.

He graduated in 1939 from East High School in Waterloo, where he was sports editor of the yearbook and captain of the basketball team.

He entered the Army Air Corps in 1943, where he was a navigator on the B-24 Liberator, serving with the 15th Air Force in Italy. He completed 36 bombing missions and was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1945 as a first lieutenant.

On April 15, 1945, he married Esther Staack of Sumner in Waterloo. They had three daughters, Kristin, Karin and Kaye.

After abandoning his original plan to embark on a career in journalism so he could be a sports writer he graduated in December 1948 from Iowa State College in Ames with a bachelor of science degree in architectural engineering.

At Iowa State, he also played third base on the varsity baseball team for three years, including a year as captain, under a former Mason Cityan, coach Clayton "Chick" Sutherland.
He went on to play semi-professional ball with the Mason City Legion baseball team.
Jack and Esther came to Mason City in January 1949, where Jack had taken a job with Henkel Construction Co. He served primarily as an estimator, but in his early years with Henkel he also did architectural work.

He was architect for several homes in Mason City, most notably the Ernest Nelson home, at 541 E. State St., where a plaque with his name on it has been placed as part of Mason City's architectural walking tour.

In 1954 he became a vice president at Henkel. He was named executive vice president by Carl Henkel in 1960.

In 1960, he was elected president of the North Iowa Builders Exchange. The following year he was elected as a director of the Master Builders of Iowa in Des Moines and, in 1963, was elected president of the Master Builders.

In 1968 he was named co-chairman for Plan Bulldozer, a disaster-relief effort established to place manned construction equipment in Charles City and Oelwein after the 1968 tornado.

He was president of the Mason City YMCA Board of Directors in 1972, during which time he led a major fundraising drive to modernize, renovate and expand the YMCA, then located at 15 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

He retired from Henkel in 1984 after 35 years with the company but was asked to return for another year. He continued to serve as a consultant for some time after.

He married Marvyl Gettman Kasik on Oct. 2, 1976. After living in Clear Lake and Mason City, they moved to Florida in 1995, where they enjoyed every day with each other. They loved traveling together.

An all-around athlete, Jack was a devoted golfer and bowler after his college days. In his later years, he enjoyed going to casinos, playing cards and doing his morning crossword puzzles. He also relished his late-afternoon Happy Hours.

He was a lover of music - Frank Sinatra was his favorite - and of books, and shared this love with his family. He was a devoted Yankees fan and a Cyclones fan.

His family came first, but he also treasured the time spent with his friends and business associates over the years, many of whom preceded him in death. He loved working at Henkel Construction and thought highly of the people with whom he worked.

Jack was a quiet, modest man who maintained a childlike enjoyment of the little things in life, whether it was a piece of Marvyl's coconut cream pie or an old photo of his daughters dressed in their Hopalong Cassidy shirts.

Jack set an example for others of always putting his best effort into every project he undertook.

He belonged to various organizations, including the Iowa Engineering Society, ISU Alumni Association, VFW, Kiwanis Club, YMCA, Elks Club, Mason City Country Club and Clear Lake All-Vets Golf Club.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and later a member of First United Methodist Church. Most recently, he was a member of First United Methodist Church in Port Orange, Fla.

His gentle demeanor, sense of humor and loving presence will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Marvyl, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; daughters Kristin and Karin Buehner of Mason City; granddaughter Jordan (Robert) McKee, St. Louis, Mo.; son-in-law Rick (Candy) Ockerman, Mason City; stepchildren Jo Kasik of Minneapolis, Bill (Margy) Kasik of Des Moines, Lori (Dave) Ricken of Clear Lake and Kip (Kathy) Kasik of Port Orange, Fla.; niece Jean Olson of Prescott, Ariz.; nephews Don (Beth) Oehlerts of Fort Collins, Colo., and Richard ("Boots") Oehlerts of Venice, Fla.; sisters-in-law Dorothy (Bob) Ornberg, Coarsegold, Calif., Faye (Marlyn) Lee, Mason City, and Lynda (Doug) McMannes, Mason City; brothers-in-law Bob Gettman, Mason City; Bruce Gettman and Marlene Kruger, Mason City; and Ron (Joani) Gettman, Mason City; step-grandchildren Robbi Kasik, Jeremy Kasik, Tony Kasik, Bridget (Chad) Heuton, Kellie (Brady) Gries, Nicki Searle and Melissa (Tanner) Hoel; great-grandchildren Ellery and Cohen Gries; great-nieces Debbie Coffey, Cathy Santerre, Becky (Ron) Areshenkoff, Julie (George) Wallace, Pamela (Rich) Manuel, Wendy Clifford, Cynthia (Tom) Lynch, Stephanie (Greg) Kodres and Michelle (Bruce) Hill; great-nephews, Steve and David Robbins, Russell Rippe, Warren Olson and Mark Nichols; and other great-nieces and great-nephews.

Rosemary worked at Clear Lake Bank and Trust for thirty years as a secretary with the insurance agency. She met with many members of the community there and was well-known for her friendly smile and warm service.

In her earlier days she loved to dance and was as graceful on the dance floor as she was in life. Most important to her, though, was her family and friends. Some of her happiest times were spent traveling with Steve. They had a great time on their fishing trips to Canada with good friends and vacationing on the beach in California with their grandchildren. She was instrumental in keeping extended family together by hosting an annual potluck party after the parade on the 4th of July.

Rosemary also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and photography, as noted with all the family pictures surrounding her in her home. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and had fond memories of her time as a Sunday School teacher.

Her grace, beauty and generosity will always be remembered. Her love will always be felt in our hearts. Mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt, cousin, friend - she will never be forgotten.

Rosemary is survived by her husband Steve Meyers, Clear Lake, Iowa; two children, Jacqueline "Jackie" Buchan and her husband Rick, Albany, Calif., and Brent Shoop, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; two step-children, Erik Meyers and his wife Abbey, Apple Valley, Minn., and Heidi O'Neil, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren Mitchell and Trevor Buchan, Anna and Abby Shoop and step-grandchild Luke O'Neil; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends.
