Mark R. Bock
BELMOND
- Mark R. Bock, 54, of rural Belmond,
died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at the Iowa
Specialty Hospital, Belmond, surrounded
by his loving family, following a
courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m., Friday, Sept. 14, at the First
Reformed Church of Alexander, Alexander.
Pastor Philip Arnold will be
officiating. Burial will be in the
Belmond Cemetery, Belmond.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8
p.m., at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516
First St. S.E., Belmond, and continues
one hour prior to the services at church
Friday.
The family suggests those wishing to
express their sympathies through a
memorial to Mark's life consider Hospice
of Wright County, Iowa Specialty
Hospital of Belmond, to the family, or
to the donor's choice.
Mark Raymond Bock, the son of Harold and
Mary (Lage) Bock, was born July 23,
1958, in the Lemars, Iowa, area. He was
one of 10 children to bless this union.
Mark moved with his family to a farm
near Belmond with his family at the age
of 5.
Mark attended Belmond Community Schools,
graduating with the Belmond High School
Class of 1976. During his years in
Belmond schools he was active in
wrestling and football. He also
participated in both Alexander Youth
Baseball and 4-H Leagues during his
childhood.
Following his primary education in
Belmond, Mark went on to continue his
post-secondary education at Hawkeye
Technical College where he studied for
two years in the Diesel Mechanics
program.
Mark later returned to his childhood
roots on the farm near Belmond where he
began his lifelong vocation as a farmer.
Mark was united in marriage to Denise
Pals on July 16, 1983, at the First
Reformed Church, Alexander. The couple's
marriage and life partnership brought
three beautiful children into the world:
Kyle, Nash and Kelsey.
Mark and Denise farmed and raised their
family east of Belmond. Farming to Mark
was much more than just a career, it was
a calling and something he truly loved
in every way. Be it working the black
earth and planting the seeds in the
spring of the year, reaping the fruits
of the harvest in the fall, or
meticulously planning the outcome of
each and every task or chore, his mind
was always looking to the future. His
mind was always delving into the tasks
at hand.
Mark used this same ambition and drive
for knowledge in all that he did. He
constantly researched in great depth
when it came to purchasing a product,
machinery, equipment, or service for
farming or an electronic item, vehicle
or luxury item for enjoyment.
Mark's love of lifelong learning and
history was of great importance in
nearly all that he did with his family.
They reflect back on family vacations
that would always include great times of
fun and leisure, but these adventures
would almost certainly include a side
trek to a museum or other destination
along the route that would involve an
educational or historical element.
His wife and children fondly remember
their husband and dad as a man not only
as a hard worker who gave 100 percent to
all he did, but also a terrific husband
and father who always found time at the
end of the day or on the weekend to play
ball and other games with them no matter
how tired he may have been.
Family was of utmost importance in his
life. His children knew that he was
always there cheering for them in all
their extra-curricular activities. He
and Denise were always there in the
stands or at other events which they may
have been involved in.
Mark had a lifelong love for sports. It
commenced during his school years and
continued throughout adulthood. He was
always quite competitive, for many years
playing on a variety of adult softball
teams, including a dream opportunity in
recent years to play on a team with sons
Kyle and Nash in a tournament in which
their team won the championship. He
absolutely relished this precious
occasion.
His competitive fire could also be seen
around the foosball and ping pong table
with family and friends. If you wanted
to win you would most definitely want to
have Mark on your team.
Mark enjoyed more laid-back occasions as
well, such as the "Annual Bock Family
Camping Outings," a game of cards with
family and friends, relaxing while
watching a game of "Jeopardy,"
"Millionaire" or "Cash Cab," or just
spending times visiting at a family or
community gathering.
He loved to do woodworking and had made
numerous meticulously handcrafted
keepsakes and furnishings for his
family. Most certainly if you were to
find Mark in the shop or working on his
machinery the air would be filled with
his favorite tunes in the background.
Though his primary life focuses were on
family and farming, he was not afraid to
lend his time, skills and knowledge to
various volunteer projects and
organizations. Mark had spent time
helping develop and build the walking
trail in River Park along the Iowa River
in Belmond and had helped in the
construction of the ball diamond
facilities and the Belmond-Klemme
Schools Campus.
His love for young people found Mark
giving of his leadership as a coach and
volunteer with area Little Kids Baseball
programs and with the Youth Wrestling
programs of the community.
All who knew Mark and had the privilege
of crossing his life journey will
remember him as a quiet yet very
friendly man who never strived to be in
the spotlight or cared to be recognized
by the greater world. He gave of himself

Jimmy Gene Janssen, the son of Gene
Sterling and Ora Ellen (Miller) Janssen
was born Feb. 22, 1948, at Mason City.
In his childhood he moved with his
family to the Belmond area where he
attended Belmond Community Schools
graduating from Belmond High School in
the Class of 1966.
Following high school Jim commenced one
of a number of stints of military
service in the United States Air Force,
Marines, and Air Force Reserves. He
served in the Vietnam War, Persian Gulf,
Iraq, Operations Desert Shield,
Operations Desert Storm, and in various
other locations and time periods both
active and in the Reserves. His main
responsibilities for most of his
military tenure were in transport as a
Load Master with C-130 aircraft. Jim
played a major and integral role in the
transportation of more than 157,000
military personnel on almost 3,300
missions, as well as in the movement of
countless military equipment and
weaponry. In all, Jim had spent 30 years
serving his country. His rank at the
time of his Honorable Discharge in the
Air Force was as a Staff Sgt., and from
the Marine Corps he was released from
service as a Cpl. Jim had received
numerous commendations, medals, and
ribbons during his six different stints
of service, including, National Service
Defense Medal with one Bronze Star, Air
Force and Navy Outstanding Unit Awards,
Navy Meritorius Commendation with Unit
Device, Marine Corp. Good Conduct Medal,
Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service
Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force
Longevity Award Ribbon with One Bronze
Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Vietnam
Gallantry Cross with Device, National
Defense Medal, Vietnam Service and
Campaign Medals, Small Arms Marksmanship
Ribbon/Rifle, Humanitarian Service
Award, as well as other recognitions
during his years in both active and
reserve duties.
Jim was united in marriage to Rebecca
Brown on Aug. 10, 1974, at the Cambridge
Lutheran Church, Cambridge, Minn. The
couple's union was blessed with a baby
girl, Kelly, who was the apple of her
father's eye. At and early age and
through her years of adolescence, Kelly
or "Punky" to Jimmy; and her father
spent countless hours and occasions
together sharing in Jimmy's passion and
love for work horses. Jim had a great
fondness for the majestic Clydesdales,
often times with Kelly at his side
helping once in awhile at Britt Draft
Horse Show. In later years he continued
to keep his interest strong by attending
the Britt Draft Horse Show and other
equestrian events.
Jim's life interests, hobbies and past
times were many and diverse. He enjoyed
family fishing trips to the cabin at his
favorite resort at Ten Mile Lake in
Minnesota, an occasional excursion to
the casino, cowboy and western movies
and t.v. shows, such as Bonanza,
Gunsmoke, and of course watching John
Wayne movies with Jim's sidekick and
buddy, Clay, at his side. He loved
farming, mountains, the great outdoors,
sight seeing, and just taking off on
journey's where ever they may lead. He
was a free spirit with a great memory,
unique sense of humor and wit, and had a
great knack for telling stories many of
which he had witnessed first hand. Many
may not have been aware of Jimmy being a
Bob Marley fan as well. His friendships
and love for people spanned great
distances both in the United States and
reaching abroad countries where he had
served during his military careers.
Jim's life was filled with countless
miles of travels by air and by land. He
was always excited for that next
adventure, whether it was by aircraft
during the service, on the the highway
or back roads of life of his civilian
profession as a truck driver, or on a
family get away. Jim was never grounded
for long. He truly lived life to the
fullest and made every second count.
Upon being diagnosed with cancer in
September 2011 he faced this enemy
straight on and put in the battle like
no other. He kept an upbeat and positive
attitude all the way until the last
moments of his life before he was
honorably discharged one last time into
freedom from this life ending battle.
Jim was then awarded with the greatest
commendation of all and the greatest
journey and adventure ever.
Those who had the chance to cross in one
of Jim's countless life journey's will
cherish memories of him as a man of
honor and dignity, full of life, with a
"Heart of Gold," who would do almost
anything for others. He was a loyal
friend, faithful ally, and devoted
husband and doting father, who was
extremely proud and thankful for his
supportive wife and life partner,
Rebecca and all she did to raise their
daughter over his many years of service
and travels.
His legacy will live in in the hearts
and minds of his wife and soul mate of
38 years, Rebecca Janssen, Meservey,

special pup "Dakota Ray" and countless
friends.

and paternal grandparents, and his

Royal was born Feb. 28, 1959, in Mason
City, the son of Royal Sr. and Beverly
Wentworth. He was baptized and confirmed
at Holy Family Catholic Church. Royal
graduated from Newman Catholic High
School in 1977 and Briar Cliff College
in 1981. He received his Master's Degree
from St. Mary's University in 1996.
While attending Briar Cliff College, he
met the love of his life, Maria Lynn
Meshek, who was also a Briar Cliff
student. They were married Oct. 4, 1980,
at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in
Carroll. Royal and Maria were blessed
with two beautiful daughters, Kristin
and Courtney. They were his ultimate
pride and joy. He loved his family
beyond measure.
Royal began his teaching and coaching
career at his alma mater, Newman
Catholic. He taught middle school social
studies there for 19 years. In 2001, he
became a teacher in the Mason City
Community School district, first
Roosevelt Middle School, then at John
Adams Middle School. He was proud to be
a Mohawk. Royal was an enormously gifted
teacher and a tremendous role model. He
had a talent for making every student
feel important. Teaching wasn't a job to
Royal, it was his passion. He taught
hundreds of his students about more than
just social studies, quietly touching
their lives and teaching them about
life.
Royal was a member of St. Joseph's
Catholic Church, where he served as a
Eucharistic Minister and was a member of
the Knights of Columbus. He was also a
member of the North Iowa Officials
Association, Iowa High School Athletic
Association and the Mason City Education
Association. Athletics were a huge part
of Royal's entire life. He coached cross
country and football and was a high
school girls and boys basketball
official. He shared a brotherhood with
his two refereeing partners, Dave
Cicetti and Randy Fischels. He coached
his daughters' softball and basketball
teams as they were growing up. For many
years Royal was a basketball official
for the Iowa Games and a volunteer
official for North Iowa Area Community
College and the Iowa Hall of Pride
Challenge.
Along with his wife, he was a big fan of
Iowa State. The Cyclone plates on his
car read "REFNRUN." He was an avid
runner, and he also enjoyed listening to
music, walking the family dog Lexis and
"grand dogs" Tucker and Finley, boating
and fishing in Canada with his brothers,
hanging out in his driveway with the
"Men of Asbury Place" hashing out game
scores, predicting the weather and
solving the world's problems.
Royal was kind, gentle, caring, loving,
selfless and always smiling. He was
devoted to his wife and daughters, and
to his family and his students, who
always came first in his life. He would
always greet you with his full-of-life
voice, and he was quick with a big hug.
He was fun-loving with his family,
friends and students. Royal had a huge
heart of gold. To his wife Maria, he was
first a prince and always a king, living
up to his given name-Royal-always a true
gentleman, father, son, brother, friend
and mentor.
Royal is survived by his loving wife
Maria, precious daughters Kristin of
Waterloo and Courtney of Mason City,
parents Royal Sr. ("Bud") and Beverly
Wentworth of Mason City, two brothers
Michael (Connie) Wentworth of Omaha,
Neb., Craig (Kathy) Wentworth of Omaha,
Neb., two sisters Melody (Walt) Pearce
of Mason City, Traci (Steve) Kieffer of
Ogden, many nieces and nephews, and
enough friends to fill the Cyclones'
football stadium. Waiting for him in
heaven is his sister, Lori
Wentworth-Kruger.
A bright light has gone out on Earth but
a new star is shining in heaven. Royal's
life will always be remembered and never
forgotten through the beautiful gift of
organ and tissue donation.
