Ruth Wellemeyer Hanson

TITONKA - Ruth Wellemeyer Hanson, age 93, of Titonka, died Friday (Sept. 9, 2011) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, at United Methodist Church, Titonka. Inurnment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Wesley.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, Sept. 11, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Titonka.

Ruth was born Feb. 7, 1918, to Arthur and Lydia Griewe Wellemeyer of Klemme. She was the fourth of five children.

She enjoyed growing up in Klemme. Her father owned a general store and was the town undertaker. She and her sisters would sing for funerals and she handled her father's bookkeeping starting in eighth grade. She played violin and piano and sang in the Klemme high school where she graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1935.

Following graduation she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught country school near Klemme, and grade school in Titonka and Nashua.

She met her future husband Burton Hanson while she was teaching in Titonka. He sent her a letter asking her on a date. She sent a letter back declining. He did not receive the letter in time and showed up for the date. Her three children are here because Ruth decided to go out with Burton after all.

Ruth and Burton were married Feb. 22, 1943, in the home of the bride's parents. The newlyweds started wedded life on a farm five miles south of Titonka. They farmed in partnership with Burton's parents, Julius and Anna Pearson Hanson, and raised three children, Linda, Bruce, and Martha.

During this time, Ruth was active in the neighborhood club, served as a Cub Scout leader, and Sunday school teacher. In 1949, the family began vacationing on the North Shore of Lake Superior each August, a tradition carried on to this day by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

To help put their children through college, Ruth returned to teaching in 1963 first at Corwith-Wesley and later Titonka Consolidated. She taught fifth grade until 1979 when she retired and the same year Burton passed away. She soon renovated a home in the southwest corner of Titonka and moved to town.

In retirement, Ruth served on the Titonka Library Board and was a Hospice volunteer. She also developed a passion for quilting and worked with the Titonka United Methodist quilters for more than 30 years. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several card clubs. She had a competitive spirit and would show no mercy when playing Aggravation or croquet, no matter how young the grandchild. She was an avid reader and enjoyed talking books when her eyesight failed.

Ruth died Sep. 9, 2011, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City, Iowa, at the age of 93.

Survivors include her daughter Linda and husband Robert Madison of Mapleton, Iowa; son Bruce Hanson and wife Mary Kae of Wesley, Iowa; and daughter Martha Hanson of Honolulu, Hawaii, as well as five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Burton in 1979, granddaughter Susanne Minar, great granddaughter Kara Dobesh and brothers and sisters, Andrew Wellemeyer, Ethel Bacon, Clarice Carlson and Nora Mohler.

Beyond these facts, Ruth was known for her quick wit, kindness and warmth. No one could ask for a better mother or grandmother even if she closed every conversation with "Work hard. Have fun. Be good."

Visitation for Clair will be held from 4-7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood.

A funeral service for Clair be held 10 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 14, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Lunch will be served at the church following the burial.

Clair was born Feb. 8, 1946, in Mason City, to Robert and Geneva (Brazel) Patterson. Clair was born as the fourth of five brothers. He attended school and graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School, Class of 1964. Following high school, Clair attended North Iowa Area Community College and received his Associate of Arts degree.

Clair was united in marriage to the love of his life Rebecca Ann Barnes on Sept. 15, 1972, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. To this union, a son, Michael, and a daughter, Janna, were born.

Clair spent the majority of his working years employed by Randall Transit/Falkstone in Northwood. There, he worked for 27 years and reluctantly retired in the fall of 2010 due to his deteriorating health.

Clair was loved and cherished by his family and multitude of friends. He was always the person friends and family could call on for a helping hand. Clair epitomized all that is good about small town friendships.

Clair was an avid sportsman, spending the years hunting pheasants, deer, and later in life he mastered the luck of turkey hunting. He enjoyed sitting for hours waiting out the elusive gobbler. Fishing was his passion that was only limited by time and resources. He counted the days to his annual trip to Lac Seul, Ontario, Canada, with his fishing buddies and son. Here, they were graced by fertile waters of plentiful walleyes. His buddies even named an island after him the year he caught the big walleye of the trip. Clair was most at ease with a fishing rod and beer in hand on the waters of Lac Seul.

Clair was beyond passionate about the Iowa Hawkeyes. He and Becky spent many fall weekends traveling to Iowa City to cheer on the Hawks with friends and family. Over the years, there were many instances where people mistakenly took Clair for resembling legendary Hawkeye football coach Hayden Fry. While feeling a small sense of embarrassment at the time, you knew deep down inside, Clair took great pride in those humorous moments.

Clair was also a dedicated racing fan enjoying watching his brother and nephews race stock and modified cars on dirt tracks through the years. Clair was a big NASCAR fan cheering on Jeff Gordon to all his victories over the years. Clair and Becky traveled to Texas on numerous occasions to visit their dear friends and attend the race.

Ironically, Clair missed Jeff Gordon's only victory at the Texas track in the spring of 2009 as he and Becky did not travel there due to his health.

Clair held a deep appreciation for classic automobiles. He and Becky had an early '50s Chevy pick-up that they enjoyed driving to the Aristocrats car club events. They also attended the Back to the '50s car show at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on a yearly basis.

Clair's family will sadly miss him and will always remember him as a great husband, father, and grandfather. His friends will miss his generosity, quick wit, and booming smile.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Becky, of 39 years; his children, Michael (Lisa) Patterson of Lone Tree and Janna (Chad) Arndt of Mason City; his grandchildren Natalie, Cadence, and Jackson Patterson; Caleb, Alexis, and Brooklyn Arndt; his mother Geneva and brothers, Harvey (Evy), Howard, Larry (Barb), and Richard Patterson all of Northwood; father and mother-in-law Russell and Dorothy Barnes of Cresco; brother-in-laws John(Theresa) Barnes of Cresco and Dan(Sue) Barnes of Adams, Minn.; sister-in-laws Michaeleen (John) of Lakeville, Minn. and Colleen (Kevin) of Cresco; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, and his sister-in-law, Lois.
