CLEAR LAKE - Robert C. "Bob" Brand, 64, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Lorain F. Bredlow

GARNER - Lorain F. Bredlow, 89, of Garner, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Lorain Frances Bredlow, the daughter of Franklin and Julia (Borchers) Bredlow, was born April 19, 1922, on a farm near Garner, a twin to her brother, LeRoy. She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and graduated from Garner High School in 1939. During her school years she was a dedicated member of the Liberty Busy Bees 4-H Club. Lorain was an excellent seamstress, crafting clothes for herself as well as her two younger sisters and other family members.

Lorain lived and worked on the family farm southwest of Garner until such time when she took employment at West's Department Store in Garner. She later worked at Hale-Phipps Motors in Garner as a bookkeeper. When Phipps Motors moved to Mason City, she followed the business and made her home in Mason City.

In 1978, she moved to Clear Lake where she worked as a legal secretary for the law firm of Boyle, Schuler and Grabinski.

Before retiring at age 75, she was employed as a secretary at Nieman Titan Tire Company in Ventura.

On April 6, 2004, she entered the Concord Care Center in Garner. Family was always a big part of her life. She was a loyal and loving sister to her siblings. Her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews were all very special to her and she was always interested in their accomplishments. Lorain was an avid sports enthusiast of all types of sporting events.

She was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Garner.
Lorain is survived by her sister, Marjorie (William) Millard, of Perry, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Bredlow, of Garner and Mildred Bredlow of Garner; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sheryl (Larry) Peterson; brothers, Glen (Hazel) Bredlow, Marvin (Viola) Bredlow, Ronald Bredlow, twin brother, LeRoy; nephew, Charles Millard; and other family members.

SHEFFIELD - Sharon Dixon, 68, of Sheffield, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.

Elvin O. Enderson

LAKE MILLS - Elvin O. Enderson, 84, of Lake Mills, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating. Burial will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Thelma Lucille Gansen

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Thelma Lucille Gansen, 86, of Marble Rock, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Judy Wooton officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, and will continue one hour before service at the church on Wednesday.

Thelma Lucille Gansen was born on June 16, 1925, near Nashua, Chickasaw County, the daughter of Galen and Ella (Pierson) Harris, and died Sept. 2, 2011, the Chautauqua Guest Home No. 2 in Charles City.

She received her education in the Marble Rock public schools.

On Oct. 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to John Gansen in Austin, Minn. They made their home in Marble Rock, where they raised two sons.

Thelma attended the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock and was a member of the UMW where she assisted the funeral dinner committee for many years. She loved to cook and bake, but most of all, she enjoyed time with her family and friends. She helped to prepare dinners for the Marble Rock Lion's Club for years.

She is survived by one son, Tony (Dian) Gansen, of Round Rock, Texas; daughter-in-law, June Gansen, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Joe E. Gansen, of Mason City and Jackie Vogelgesang, of Mason City; one "adopted" granddaughter, Katie Reid Eliason, of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Spencer Vogelgesang, of Mason City; one "adopted" grea- grandson, Ander Eliason, of Mason City; two sisters, Phyllis McRoberts, of Greene, Bonnie (Ronald) Schriever, of Marble Rock; brother-in-law, Larry Bill, of Riceville; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Eugene Nickolas, of Osage.

She is preceded in death by her husband John; her son, Larry "Joe"; her parents; and sister Dorothy.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the family or the United Methodist Church of Marble Rock.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene and Marble Rock.

Dorothy L. Groesbeck

CHARLES CITY - Dorothy L. Groesbeck, 100, of Charles City, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

A funeral service will be held at at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., in Charles City, with Pastor Martha Bennett officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Dorothy Louise Groesbeck was born Oct. 2, 1910, in Charles City, the daughter of Amos H. and Emma M. (Wulff) Swant. She was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church. Dorothy attended country school and graduated from Charles City High School, Class of 1927.

She was united in marriage to George A. Groesbeck on Aug. 20, 1930, in Rochester, Minn. She had lived most all of her life on a farm north of Charles City. The couple had farmed for over fifty years before moving into town.

Dorothy liked to travel, do fancy work, solve jig-saw puzzles, garden and farm work. She also enjoyed country music and was a big NASCAR race fan.

Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. Dorothy will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Dorothy's life are her son, Donald Groesbeck and his special friend, Phyllis Staab, both of Charles City; two grandsons, Dennis (Theresa) Groesbeck, of Lyle, Minn. and Russel (Catherine) Groesbeck, of Charles City; nine great-grandchildren: Amanda, Candice, Melissa, Kylie, Veronica, Jacqueline, Caroline, Josephine and Alexander; and four great-great-grandchildren, Angelynne, Avery, Ella and Evan.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George A. Groesbeck on Dec. 15, 1995; daughter-in-law, Marilee Groesbeck; and her brother, Wayne E. Swant.

 Dorothy Agnes Helgeland

NORTHWOOD - Dorothy Agnes Helgeland, 98, of Northwood, died on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Northwood United Methodist Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Wendi Gillan officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood.

Dorothy Agnes Wright was born Dec. 24, 1912, to Edward and Julia (Mitchell) Wright in Spokane, Wash. The family moved back to Northwood when she was a small child. After graduating from Northwood High School, Dorothy was the bookkeeper for her father at the International Harvester dealership.

In 1937, she married Elmer Helgeland and they farmed west of Northwood until 1942, when they moved east of Northwood to farm until their retirement in 1967.

Dorothy enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling, card clubs and her family.

Dorothy is survived by a son, Keith Helgeland, of Arvada, Colo.; granddaughters, Angela Wilkins (Mike), of Northwood, Sarah Carpenter (Tim), of Arvada, Colo., and Kirsten Morton (Rodney), of Avada, Colo.; four great- grandchildren; sister- in- law, Gladys Bogue, of Manly; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer; her parents; her daughter Janice Jones; brother Donald Wright; sister Margaret Schaub; daughter- in- law, Sheila; sister- in- law Edith Wright; brother -in- law Robert Helgeland; a stillborn great grandchild.

 Larry William Higley
U.S. Marines (1968-1972)

NORTHWOOD - Larry William Higley, 63, of Northwood, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

No services will be held at this time, and, according to his wishes, cremation will take place with inurnment to be held at a later date.

Larry William Higley was born on June 5, 1948, the son of Ellwood and Agnes (Kessler) Higley in Ashtabula, Ohio.

Larry was inducted into the
United States Marine Corps in 1968, and served his country honorably and faithfully in the Vietnam conflict until his honorable discharge in 1972.

Larry was a drywaller by trade, and an avid woodworker. His last project was a solid oak coffee table and end table for his wife Deb. Other hobbies include fishing, camping, and spending time with his wife and dog, Bubba.

Larry was united in marriage to Debra Barr on Jan. 28, 2003, in Webster City.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Deb, of Northwood; special dog, Bubba; son Todd; daughter Carrie and fiancé Jeff; two sisters, Toni Shemal and Elaine (Gus) Spackman; father-in-law, Roger Barr; mother-in-law, CherAmi Barr and fiancé Leo Buck; brother-in-law, Charles (Marlene) Barr; many nieces, nephews; and many other extended family members and dear friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

WATERLOO - Robert R. Johnson, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Kanawha, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, in Waterloo.

Gordon H. "Gordy" Kilen

LAKE MILLS - Gordon H. "Gordy" Kilen, 85, of Lake Mills, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, surrounded by many members of his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordan presiding, with internment to follow at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. tonight, Tuesday evening, Sept. 6, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St., Lake Mills.

Gordon Hilman Kilen was born on Aug. 12, 1926, at his family's farm in rural Lake Mills, to parents George and Hilma (Thompson) Kilen. He attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School.

On June 17, 1949, Gordy was united in marriage with Joyce Madson in St. Paul, Minn. They were married for 62 years.

Gordy was a life-long farmer until retirement in 2007, when the family farm was sold. He and Joyce moved, at that time, to Mills Harbor. Gordy also sold and serviced grain storage bins for North Iowa Grain of Garner for many years.

Gordy loved bowling, fishing and golf and managed the Salem church-league softball team for many years. He was an active member of the International Order of Odd Fellows for decades and a longtime member of the Winnebago County Fair Board.
Gordy was known for his willingness to offer a ride or a helping hand to anyone, for the dedication to County Cousins he shared with Joyce and for his sociability.

Gordy is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Lake Mills; four sons: Glenn Kilen (Darlene) of Rochester, Minn., John Kilen of Lake Mills, Jim Dietz-Kilen (Catherine) of Des Moines, and Dan Kilen (Kathy) of Eldridge; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; his sisters, Ruth and Hilma; along with many extended relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Grace, Alice and Doris.

Mary Anne Kluender

OSAGE - Mary Anne (Copp) Kluender, age 74, of rural Osage, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1921 317th St., south of Osage, with Pastor Byron Northwick and Pastor Dave Byrd, Iowa Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Rockford.

Mary Anne was born Sept. 28, 1936, in London, Minn., the daughter of William and Agnes (Pell) Copp. She graduated from Lyle High School in 1954.

Mary Anne married Gary Kluender, Sr., on July 22, 1978, in Reno, Nev.

They owned and operated the Orchard Tavern. Mary Anne enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, taking care of loved ones, helping on the farm, and loved meeting new people. She collected many antiques and loved doing puzzle books.

Mary Anne is survived by her husband, Gary Kluender, Sr., of rural Osage; her son, Gary Kluender, Jr. (fiancé, Diane Toussaint) of Ionia; her grandchildren, Brett Kluender and Arianna Kluender of Ionia; sister, Reta Perrin of Osage; brother-in-law, Daryl Kluender (fiancé, Donna Eggena) of Orchard; nieces and nephews, Kevin Perrin, Sue Wilson, Brian Perrin, Vernon Kluender and Katie Wood; and Carrie Hinders.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Billy Copp.

Randall S. "Randy" Kopps

MASON CITY - Randall S. "Randy" Kopps, 60, of Mason City, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Curtis DeLong of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 W., Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, September 7, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in Randy's name in care of his family.

Randall Steven Kopps was born on Dec, 7, 1950, in Mason City, the son of Shirley and Ruby (Peterson) Kopps.

He attended Mason City High School and graduated amongst the class of 1970. Following high school, Randy worked construction and helped in building Interstate 35 as it came through Clear Lake. Randy was a long time employee of Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

On Sept. 27, 1985, he was united in marriage to Kathie Peterson-Tanner at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Randy enjoyed bowling and bowled league for many years. He also liked fishing, traveling and taking road trips, and enjoyed visiting different casinos.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife, Kathie Kopps, Mason City; his children, Scott Tanner and fiancé Becky Konitzer, Mason City, and Amber Martie, Forest City; his mother, Ruby Kopps, Mason City; his siblings, Rick (Hwa Sook) Kopps, Denver, Iowa, Russell (Teresa) Kopps, Lakeland, Minn., Mark (Paula) Kopps, Mason City, and Kathy Kopps-Franklin (Steve Carney), Mason City; his brother-in-law, Gary Peterson, Irvine, Calif.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his father; his father and mother-in-law, George and Evelyn Peterson; and a brother in infancy, Richard Eugene Kopps.

MASON CITY - Beverly J. "Bev" McClung, 77, of Mason City, died Saturday Sept. 3, 2011, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday evening, Sept. 8, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, where a Scriptural Wake service will be held at 6 p.m. led by the Rev. Michael Schueller of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Robert Charles "Bob" Brand
U.S. Army   Vietnam War

CLEAR LAKE - Robert "Bob" Charles Brand, 64, of 2400 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Sunday Sept. 4, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 8, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be today, Wednesday, from 5-7 p.m., at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service on Thursday at the church. Family suggests memorials to Robert C. Brand memorial fund.

Bob was born Feb. 4, 1947, in Mason City, the son of Frank and Edna (Cogill) Brand. He attended school in Rockford. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States
Army and served during the Vietnam War. He married Ginger Fisher July 16, 1966 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

After his discharge from the Army, he worked for Vigortone Premix, Jo-Fran Roaster and later operated the Wagon Wheel in Clear Lake. For the last twenty-four years he has worked in the First Credit Department at Schukei Chevrolet.
Bob enjoyed playing pool, golfing and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Ginger Brand, Clear Lake, Iowa; son Todd Brand and his fiancé Amanda Leland and her son Nevyn Fisher, Mason City; two granddaughters Ashley and Britny Brand, Mason City, Iowa; three great-grandchildren Nevaeh, Naomi and Mathayus; four sisters Wavel Lichman, Britt, Iowa, Marvel Thompson, Mason City, Iowa, Sharon Jenkins, Bay City, Wis., and Karen (K.J.) Hueneman, Garner, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Albert Welshans; four brothers Richard, Larry, Ronald and Arthur Brand; sister Janyce Stromley; brothers-in-law John Lichman and Elmer Thompson and a sister-in-law Naomi Brand.

Howard R. Carberry
U.S. Army (abt 1956-1980)

ROSEBUD, Texas - Howard R. Carberry, 77, passed away in a Temple, Texas, hospital, Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011.

Howard was born and raised in the Meltonville area and graduated from Carpenter High School in 1953.

He married Sharon Edwards at the Clear Lake Methodist Church, May 13, 1961. Howard spent 24 years in the U.S.
Army, retiring in 1980. He later worked for the Waco, Texas, Tranist System as a maintenance supervisor.

In his retirement years, he and Sharon enjoyed many trips with their camper to Clear Lake and Mason City to visit family and friends.

Howard is survived by his wife Sharon, three children, eight grandchildrem, four great-grandchildren and two brothers. He has a brother-in-law Jack Brown and wife Nancy in Clear Lake as well as nieces, nephews and cousins in the North Iowa area.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held today, Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Central Texas State
Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

Sadie E. Deets

BRITT - Sadie E. Deets, 87, of Britt, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Summit House in Britt for friends and family.

A private inurnment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

There will be no visitation. Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt is in charge of arrangements.

Sadie Ella Deets, the daughter of Warren and Bessie (Ashmore) Young, was born July 18, 1924 in Rose Creek, Minn.

She was united in marriage to Ward Deets on Feb. 16, 1942, in Austin, Minn. They lived in Charles City area until they moved to Clear Lake in 1959.

Sadie worked for Mach III Inc. in Mason City until she retired in 1986. She had lived at the Summit House Retirement Community in Britt for the last eight years. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and a good game of Scrabble.

Sadie is survived by a daughter, Carolyne (Wayne) Hudson of Orinda, Calif.; sons, Michael (Betsy) Deets of Garner, Douglas (Sarah) Deets of Eyota, Minn., and Jeffrey (Ellen) Deets of Rockwell; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and twelve great-great grandchildren.

SHEFFIELD - Sharon Dixon, 68, of Sheffield, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield with the Rev. Art Zewert presiding. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., today, Wednesday, at Retz Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Sharon Kay Dixon was born Dec. 1, 1942, in Mason City, a daughter of Delbert and Hazel (Harrison) Arndt. She received her education in the Mason City School District.

On Aug. 27, 1960, Sharon was united in marriage with Mearl Dixon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mason City. Sharon was a devoted mother who stayed at home with her children until they were all in school. She then worked as a supervisor at the Highway 65 One-Stop in Sheffield and later at Iowa Drainage, Ridgestone Golf Club, Paul's Steakhouse, the Sheffield Inn and Casey's in Sheffield.

Sharon loved to cook and is remembered for her dumplings and chicken pot pies. She was very sociable and welcomed many people into her home that needed a place to be. Spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren was very important to her. She collected angels and enjoyed trips to the casino and playing scratch tickets.

Elvin O. Enderson

LAKE MILLS - Elvin O. Enderson, 84, of Lake Mills, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating. Burial will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 6-8 p.m., at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Elvin Oscar Enderson was born on July 29, 1927, in Grant Township, Winnebago County, to parents Oscar and Jennie (Krull) Enderson. He grew up on a farm south of Buffalo Center, contracting polio when he was 4 years old which left him with a life-long limp, but Elvin didn't let it keep him down. He attended Grant No. 5 country school and Buffalo Center High School. In 1949, Elvin moved to a farm near Lake Mills with his family after his father passed away.

At the age of 21, Elvin had to step into Dad's boots as the oldest man on the farm, taking on his father's farming responsibilities. Elvin was a hard working farmer all his life, often helping out neighbors when the need arose.

On May 3, 1953, he married Ruth Platts at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The couple later became members at Asbury United Methodist Church, and they farmed around Lake Mills all their lives, raising two children, Mark and Judy.

After Ruth passed away, Elvin married Lorraine Starr Reicherts on Sept. 8, 1995. The couple took a honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls and Martha's Vineyard.

They moved into Lake Mills in 2008, and Elvin entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 2010.

They loved to fish and play cards, with Whist and Kings-in-the-Corner being their favorites.

Elvin always loved having the grandkids around and would play cards with them at the care center. He and Lorraine had one last game of Kings-in-the-Corner last Thursday.

Elvin is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Lake Mills; a son, Mark (Sheila) Enderson of Lake Mills; daughter, Judy (Randy) Smith of Ankeny; seven grandchildren, Robert (Andrea) Enderson, Travis (Carrie) Enderson, Jonathan (Vanessa) Smith, Rachel Smith, Joy Smith, Rebekah Smith, and Jennifer Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Lilly Enderson, Hannah and Abigail Enderson, and Stephen Smith.

Elvin is also survived by his step-children, Greg (Brenda) Reicherts of Altoona, Della (Steve) Benson of Lake Mills, and Steve (Mona) Reicherts of Lake Mills; many step-grandchildren; five siblings, Harriet Thompson of Lake Mills, Ernest (Romelle) Enderson of Northwood, Rosella Ullestad of Hanlontown, Wayne (Barb) Enderson of Tyler, Minn., and Ida (Marlyn) Rhine of Mason City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth; brother Severt Enderson in infancy; sister Leona Enderson in infancy; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Marlin Thompson, Jonas Ullestad, Harriet (Paul) Johnson, and Charles (Katherine) Platts.

Mildred Beatrice Harris

NORTHWOOD - Mildred Beatrice Harris, 93, Northwood, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A memorial service for Mildred will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Inurnment will be in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.

Mildred Beatrice Harris was born on Feb. 18, 1918, in Northwood, the daughter of Lars and Anna (Numedal) Butler. Mildred was baptized and confirmed in the North Shell Rock Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. After graduating from Northwood High School, in 1935, Mildred taught in rural country school for six years. She was united in marriage to Don Harris on July 23, 1953 in Wyoming. Don preceded her in death on May 15, 1998. Mildred worked for Olson Electric, the Northwood Drive Inn, as a cook at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, and also was a cook for the Northwood-Kensett Community School from 1969 until her retirement in 1983.

Mildred had a heart of gold, and was a very giving person. Mildred also enjoyed golfing, bowling, ceramics, and bingo.

Mildred was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Our Buddies
VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 ladies Auxiliary, and playing bingo.

Those left to cherish her memory are her nieces and nephews, Harlan (Barb) Helgeson of Northwood, Joanne Moretz, of Northwood, David (Marge) Tenold, of Northwood, LouAnn (Ted) Mattick, of Kiester, Minn., Marjorie (Robert) Hengesteg of Northwood, Lynn (Mindy) Tenold of Northwood, and Mary Ellen Ihnen of Northwood, as well as many other extended family members and friends.

Bev, also known as, "The Flower Lady," was the longtime owner and operator of Johnston's Flowers in Mason City. Bev lived for her business, her flowers, her family and her Hawkeyes.

She was also a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Lorell Delphin Christensen

RICEVILLE - Lorell Delphin Christensen, 83, of Riceville, lost his courageous three-year battle with pancreatic cancer in his home on Sept. 7, 2011.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville. The Rev. Tom Wegener will officiate and burial will be St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Riceville.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Friday during the hours of 3-8 p.m. and one hour before services at the church.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1927, in Hardy, Neb., to Ansgar Emil and Mabel Emily Andrea Christensen. As a teenager, the family moved to Iowa where he graduated from Riceville High School.

Lorell was joined in marriage to Reberta Marie Ring on Oct. 3, 1946. To this union, six children were born: Dee (Jon) Baldock of Verona, Wis.; Dennis (Ann) Christensen of Riceville; Gerald (Lori) Christensen of Nora Springs; Judy (Galen Mehl) Christensen of Lehigh; Chris (Cindy) Christensen of Riceville; and Sue (Dan) Barnes of Adams, Minn.
Lorell farmed in the Riceville area until retirement. He enjoyed his winters in Arizona, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fireworks, fishing, golfing, horses, watching chuckwagon races and the Kentucky Derby, card parties with friends, shooting pool, campfires and traveling.

Following Reberta's death, he married Myrtle Linkenmeyer on Aug. 3, 1991.
On this date his family more than doubled with the addition of Myrtle's six children: Kathy Shaw, Riceville; Mary (Jim) Langreck, Lawler; Dona (Lee) Braun, Lakeville, Minn.; Richard (Rita) Linkenmeyer, Riceville; Susan (Craig) Burggraf, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Ruth (Dennis Peyton) Meirick, Kasson, Minn.; 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Lorell is survived by his wife, Myrtle; his six children; his 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; his 6 stepchildren, 25 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren; his sisters, Zelda Christensen and Berdean Ring; his brother, Merlin (Fay) Christensen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ansgar and Mabel Christensen; his first wife, Reberta Christensen; and his brothers-in-law, Marvin Ring and Earl Buse.

Warren Earl "Jake" Jacobson

CLEAR LAKE - Warren Earl Jacobson, better known as "Jake," 83, of 1310 Village Road, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday Sept. 7, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be at 10:30a.m. Monday Sept. 12, 2011, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Chapel and on Monday one hour before the service at the church. The family suggests memorials to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Warren was born July 2, 1928, on a farm between Thornton and Meservey, Iowa, to Leland Earl and Ruth Mae (Ulrich) Jacobson. At the age of eight he moved to Clear Lake with his folks. Jake graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1945. He attended the
University of Iowa for one year and then attended Coyne Electrical School in 1947.

He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth "Betty" Roberts, on Nov. 9, 1947, in Clear Lake. The couple moved to Churdan, Iowa, and Jake started his career as an electrician working for his uncle in Peyton, Iowa. After a year, the Jacobsons were back in Clear Lake and Jake worked for Rice Electric for 13 years. They raised two sons and one daughter in their longtime home on 1st Avenue North.

In 1960, Jake started Jacobson Electric and he ran a thriving business for 32 years. In 1992 he flicked the switch and turned the business over to his right-hand man and son, Larry.

Warren was very involved and active in his community, which included being on the Clear Lake City Council for two terms, treasurer of Clear Lake Concert Association, I.O.O.F Lodge member, Miss Iowa Pageant, Clear Lake Jaycees where he received boss of the year, Boy Scout Explorer Advisor and Eagle Scout, Clear Lake Noon Lions where he was past president and the recipient of Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award and 65-year member pin.

Jake was a longtime member of the "morning coffee club." He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church where he served on several different committees and sang in the choir for over 60 years.

Warren is survived by his wife, Betty Jacobson, Clear Lake, Iowa; three children, Larry (Sue) Jacobson, Clear Lake, Paul (Cynthia) Jacobson, Las Cruces, N.M., and Susan (Brian) Larson, Ames; six grandchildren, Joel (Andrea) Jacobson, Julia (Darin) Glanzer, Erica (Brent) Berger, Paige (Chad) Rabon, Courtney (Charles) Lockin and Shelby Larson; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Pat Jacobson, Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Marren and brother Keith.

BELMOND - Elaine M. Schmidt, 85, of Belmond passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at the Belmond Medical Center.

Elaine was born in Belmond on June 24, 1926, to Dick A. and Grace (Mennenga) Pals. She was a class of 1944 graduate of Belmond High School. In her parents' home on Oct. 23, 1947, she married Clarence Junior Schmidt of Meservey. Clarence and Elaine had three children, Darwin Lynn, Darla Lee and Deon Rae. The couple spent 40 years together farming outside Meservey. They enjoyed golfing in couples tournaments and Saturday nights out for supper with dear friends. Elaine recorded a hole-in-one during one tournament.

After Clarence's death in 1987, Elaine moved from the farm to Belmond. She traveled with friends and loved playing cards, especially solitaire. She was a surrogate grandma to several children that she cared for. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting, making numerous quilts and afghans for family members, the homeless and shut-ins.
Elaine's faith in God grew strong throughout her lifelong membership at Immanuel Reformed Church.

She is lovingly remembered as kind, patient and never one to complain about her numerous health issues.

Elaine is survived by her children, Darwin (wife Nicole) of Alabama: Darla Goeman (husband Don Jr.) of Belmond: Deon Schmidt (husband Richard Edwards) of Des Moines; grandchildren, Aaron Goeman (wife Lisa); Aimee (Goeman) McKnight (husband Tad); Tate Goeman; Sydney and Jared Edwards; Joseph Hammonds; four great-grandchildren, Olivia Goeman-Willett, Thomas Treharne, and Christopher and Caley McKnight; sister, Lyola Johnson of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Stadtlander of Meservey and Shirley Faaborg of Clear Lake; brother-in-law, Roman Johnson of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Charles A. "Chuck" Sorensen

CLEAR LAKE - Charles A. "Chuck" Sorensen, 76, of 2109 Pine Tree Court, Clear Lake, Iowa, passed away Wednesday Sept. 7, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and one hour before the service on Monday at the church. Family suggests memorials to the
American Heart Association .

Chuck, the son of Harry and Viola (Lauster) Sorensen, was born August 26, 1935, in Thornton, Iowa. He graduated from Swaledale High School in 1953 and then attended Utilities Engineering Institute.

Chuck married Mardelle Luick on June 12, 1955, in Thornton, Iowa. They lived in Austin, Minn., where he was a tractor mechanic for International Harvester. They moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he was promoted to shop foreman for International Harvester and eventually was promoted into sales.

In a career move, they relocated to New Hampton, Iowa, as store manager of J.I. Case and later transferred to Mason City, Iowa, Case Power and Equipment as manager until retiring in 1990.

He enjoyed golfing, afternoon coffee with friends, car races, working in his yard, collecting toy tractors, going to antique tractor shows, traveling in their motor home and spending winters in Arizona where he attended weekly morning prayer breakfasts. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and Love of Christ Lutheran Church, Mesa, Ariz.

Charles is survived by his wife, Mardelle Sorensen, Clear Lake, Iowa; three sons, Douglas (Deb) Sorensen, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dennis Sorensen (friend Connie), Brooklyn Park, Minn., and David (Pattie) Sorensen, Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Emily, Dane, Christian, Will, Charlene and Peter Sorensen; sister, Veryl (Richard) Hansen, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Phyllis and Sherryl. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Viola; stepmother, Dorothy; brother-in-law, Bud Luick; and sister-in-law, Lorraine Jones.

Michael R. Wilson

GRIMES - Michael R. Wilson, 28, of Grimes passed away Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 12, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines with the Rev. Robert A. Hoefler officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Sunday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m.

Michael Robert Wilson, the son of Robert and Sandra (Hayes) Wilson, was born Dec. 1, 1982, in Iowa City. He graduated from Dowling High School in 2001 and continued his education at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for one year. Mike then transferred to Iowa State University in Ames and graduated with a degree in Business Administration.

On May 21, 2011, he married Emily C. Berg at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Des Moines. She was the love of his life. They made their home in Grimes. Mike was employed with Wells Fargo as a Loan Administrator Manager I. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially on the Berg farm in Harper and the Hayes farm in Garner.

Mike is survived by his wife, Emily; his parents, Robert and Sandra Wilson of Coralville; a sister, Joanna Wilson of Oakland, California, and her fiancé, Brett Green; maternal grandmother, Marilyn Hayes of Garner; many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Harlan Hayes of Garner; paternal grandparents, Dr. F. Dale and Flora Wilson of Davenport; and a good friend, Mark Mortet.

Agnes O. Rice

LIME SPRINGS - Agnes O. Rice, 90, passed away in the Cresco Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011.

Funeral services for Agnes O. Rice will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Candraeah Carey officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Internment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Lindstrom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Agnes Opal Rice was born Feb. 14, 1921, at Swaledale, the daughter of Arthur Charles and Ella Robertina (Trana) Polsdofer. She attended school in Swaledale, graduating from high school in 1939.

On Oct. 15, 1939, she and Virgil Rice were married at Swaledale. Together they farmed near Swaledale, Clear Lake, and Rockwell before moving to Lime Springs in 1958.

Virgil died in June of 2001. Agnes moved to the Cresco Care Center in December of 2004.

Agnes was an avid gardener, providing both beautiful flowers and much produce to feed her family. She was a 4-H leader for several years, an active member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She sang with the Cerro Gordo Farm Bureau Women's Chorus and was active in the Republican Party. She loved playing many kinds of cards and board games. Her hobbies also included reading, baking, sewing, and quilting. Her greatest joy was her family.

Agnes is survived by her children: Linda (Brittain) Lukens of McCordsville, Ind., Donna (Larry) Bonnstetter of West Bend, Clair (Carol) Rice of Verndale, Minn., Dennis (Velma) Rice of Lime Springs, and Betty (Dennis) VandeLaare of Mendota Heights, Minn.; 16 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; her sisters: Ardes Bier of Clear Lake, Dorothy Hiscocks of Britt, and brothers Duane (Joan) Polsdofer of Rockwell, and B. Edward (Ethel) Polsdofer of Saline, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil; her parents; one brother Lawrence; and seven sisters Marian, Mayvis, Avis, Neva, Elda, Leona, and Shari; and one great-granddaughter Rachel Greenfield.

SIGNAL HILL, Tenn. -Dr. Marshall Carlisle St. John, 63, of Signal Mountain, died on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, 612 James Boulevard, Signal Mountain, Tenn., on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. with Pastors Gary Phillips and Travis Hutchinson officiating.

A private graveside ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Minnie I. "Midge" Vietor

OMAHA, Neb. - Minnie I. "Midge" Vietor, 91 of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Iowa Falls, Iowa, died Tuesday Sept. 6, 2011, at the Life Care Center in Elk Horn, Neb.
Memorial services for Midge Vietor will be at a later date.
