Dick Jenkins

ELDRIDGE - Dick Jenkins, 77, a resident of Eldridge, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, surrounded by his beloved family.

His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Faith Lutheran Church of Eldridge, where he was a member. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. Chambers Funeral Home of Eldridge is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dick was born March 24, 1934, in Manly, the son of McKinley and Gertrude (Ohland) Jenkins, and was a graduate of Manly High School. He was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Garlock on Dec. 20, 1952, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Dick was employed by the Continental Baking Co. from 1955 until his retirement in 1995. From 1995 until 2003 he was employed by the North Scott Community School District as a custodian.

He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and in earlier years enjoyed bowling. Dick was a hard worker, a devoted husband, loving dad, grandpa and great-grandpa who always put his family first.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Nancy; his children, Pam (Dean) Engelbrecht of Davenport, and Kevin (Debbie) Jenkins of Eldridge; his grandchildren, Darin (Shelli) Engelbrecht of Davenport, Deena (Phil) Dhuse of Marseilles, Ill., Lindsay (Chad) Holdorf of Grimes, and Kelsey Jenkins of Dubuque; his great-grandchildren, Dylan and Nolan Engelbrecht of Davenport and Lindy Jane and Caston Dhuse of Marseilles, Ill.; his sister, Delores Fredrickson of Northwood; along with several nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

His parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Merle Kessler

OSAGE - Merle Lester Kessler, 87, of Osage died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Merle was born Dec. 20, 1923, at Belmond, the son of Theodore and Alice (Saatof) Kessler.

Most of his youth was spent on a farm south of Clear Lake near Thornton, with the family later moving to a farm south of Saratoga. He was educated in country schools.

Merle married Hazel Irene Wesp on June 21, 1948, in New Hampton. Two daughters were born to this union, Linda Lou Kessler and Cathy Ann Kessler. They lived in Riceville for more than 50 years. Merle worked for CO-OP Oil, Dale's TV and Larry's TV.

They moved to Osage in 2001. Merle was an accomplished musician, having started playing the guitar and singing at age 16. Cousin Merle and the Maple Leaf Cowboys played at many dances and area events. He made a commercial and recorded numerous records between 1967 and 1980 in Nashville, Tenn.

Private graveside services will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Merle is survived by his wife, Hazel Kessler of Osage; a sister, Sylvia Voyna, living in Arkansas; two brothers, Leonard of Lime Springs and Ervin of Riceville; and a sister-in-law, Viola Kessler of Meservey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Cathy Ann; his daughter, Linda Lou in 2004; and nine sisters and brothers.

Louis C. Mayo

MASON CITY - Louis C. Mayo, born June 25, 1924, passed away peacefully at his residence May 3, 2011, at the age of 86.

Louis wished his body to be cremated and put to rest. Louis spent his time at the adult day care center entertaining friends and acquaintances the last several years. He had worked as a truck driver most of his life in Chicago and Mason City. Louis married Margaret Luna in his early life and had five children, Clarence Mayo of Manly, Felix Mayo of Manly, Anthony Mayo of Meservey, Lucinda Mayo of Belmond, and Earl Mayo of Henderson, Texas, and step-daughter Gloria Funk, Northwood.

Louis was the youngest of five children.

Preceding Louis in death are his parents, brothers, sister and his son, Earl Mayo.

He is survived by his children, Gloria, Clarence, Anthony, Felix and Lucinda; three grandchildren, Brad Mayo, Jasmine Mayo and Lindsay Harms; and six great-grandchildren.

Louis had many friends and was always a treat to be around. He will be missed by many, but never forgotten. God Bless.

Saturday, May 7, a lucheon will be held at 2 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at the Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 9. Those wishing to attend are welcome.

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. - Thelma Leegaard, 89, of Hoffman, died on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minn.

IOWA FALLS - Violet Meyer, 94, of Iowa Falls, died Friday, May 6, 2011, at her home.

Jerry N. Deshler

RED BANKS, Miss. - Jerry N. Deshler was born April 21, 1939, in Mason City, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Red Banks, Miss., on Monday, April 11, 2011, of natural causes.

He was preceeded in death by his second wife Sharon Deshler, and her two sons, Bryan Carson of Elkhorn, Neb., and Scott Carson.

Jerry has three children from his first marriage, Jerry N. Deshler Jr., Jennifer Deshler, and Amy M. Deshler from the Mason City and Iowa City areas.

Edith May (Farmer) Johnson

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Edith May (Farmer) Johnson, 91, passed away surrounded by her family members on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Silvercrest at Deer Creek in Overland Park, Kan.

A Celebration of Life will be held in July 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Osage. A private burial will occur at the Osage Cemetery.

Edith May Farmer was born on Jan. 7, 1920, in Fairfield, to Samuel and Mertie (Sears) Farmer. She grew up on the family farm and attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse. In 1937, she graduated from Fairfield High School and attended Parsons College for two years. She then went to Iowa State College in Ames, and graduated in 1942. Following college she moved to Osage, to become the Mitchell County Extension Home Economist.

On Nov. 19, 1944, May married James Claire Johnson at the Congregational Church in Osage. They farmed in Union Township for 28 years. They were both members of the Union Presbyterian Church and subsequently the United Methodist Churches in St. Ansgar and Osage where she was UMW President. Claire's Norwegian heritage was celebrated through their involvement in Sons of Norway and she served as president of the local chapter. Claire preceded her in death in October 2001.

May was asked to return to the position of Iowa State University Extension Home Economist and later became the Extension 4-H and Youth Agent for Mitchell and Floyd Counties retiring in 1980. Her professional recognitions include Honorary 4-H Club Member 20 years service, Citation for Distinguished Service to 4-H on the behalf of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents 1975, The R. K. Bliss Extension Citation in recognition of outstanding educational leadership in Extension 4-H and Youth Programs 1976, and induction into the Centennial Class Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame for Outstanding Service and Dedication to 4-H in 2002.

May Johnson was a talented seamstress, needle worker, and cook. She made her own and her young children's clothing plus curtains and draperies and was known for her yeast breads and pies. In retirement she completed several hand stitched quilts and made counted cross stitch and hardanger items which are proudly displayed in her children's homes. Gardening and playing golf were outdoor activities she enjoyed. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her membership in the Shakespearean Study Club.

Survivors include four children Pamela (Herbert) Haack of Rochester, Minn.; Mary Lynn Johnson (Denise Robertson) of Spokane, Wash.; Lee (Janelle) Johnson of Overland Park, Kan.; Lu Johnson of Apple Valley, Minn.; and five grandchildren Natalie Haack of San Diego, Calif.; Leah (John) Deane of Goodyear, Ariz.; Renee Johnson of Alpharetta, Ga.; Adam Johnson of New Orleans, La.; and Todd Johnson of La Jolla, Calif.; and two step-great grandchildren Samantha and Andrew Deane. Her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Harry Fay, of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; sister-in-law, Helen Johnson of Osage; and four nieces and one nephew also survive.

Ethel Betty Riekens Keller

Britt - Ethel Betty Riekens Keller, 84, of Winnebago, Minn., formerly of Britt, passed away Thursday (May 5, 2011) at United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

Ethel, the youngest daughter of George and Anna Albright Riekens, was born on April 28, 1927, on the family farm three miles west and two miles south of Kanawha.

Ethel worked in Kanawha, and at the V & S Variety Store and Rexall Drug in Britt until her marriage to Gene Keller on June 23, 1968. She was a bookkeeper for Keller Electric until Gene's retirement. Following Gene's death in 2003, Ethel moved to Winnebago, Minn., to be closer to family, where she currently resided.

Ethel is survived by her son Robert (Cindy) Riekens of Albert Lea, Minn.; granddaughter Angela Riekens of Albert Lea, Minn.; grandsons James and Randy Adams; great-grandchildren; sister Dorothy Hoppe of Winnebago, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Henry and Arald Riekens; and sister Ruth Riekens Earles.

JOPLIN, Mo. - Charles H. Martin, Jr., age 74, Joplin, passed away at 7:25 a.m. Saturday (May 7, 2011) at Freeman West Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Charlie King will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Parker Mortuary.

Charles was born March 23, 1937, in Rose Creek, Minn., to the late Charles H. Martin, Sr., and Mabel Waller Martin. He had lived in Joplin since 1973 moving from Osage, Iowa.

He worked as a machinist for Oliver Corporation in Charles City for several years. He had also operated a Gulf Station in Osage for several years. After moving to Joplin, he worked at Vickers, Inc., as a machinist for several years. He then worked at Missouri Southern State College in the custodial department until his retirement in 1996.

Charles was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

He married Sandra Skou in 1960 in Lyle, Minn. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include his children, Dennis Martin, Lincoln, Neb., Debbie Lindsey, Joplin, Mo., Douglas Martin, Pittsburg, Kansas, Diane Rainey, Joplin, Mo., Donna Boyd, Joplin, Mo.; one brother, Arthur Martin, Fairmont, Minn.; three sisters, Helen Rahnenfehrer, Anna Mae Aaker and Marilyn Nelson, all of Rochester, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Linda Landherr, Rose Creek, Minn.; 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Stephen R. Oulman

Stephen R. Oulman was born on Nov. 16, 1949, in Mason City, the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Shovein) Oulman. He was active in sports and Scouting during his school years. Following graduation, he attended and graduated from Florida State University.
For many years, Steve was a partner with his father in the Melody Lanes Bowling Alley in Clear Lake. He later worked for McKinness Excavating, Eaton Corporation, in Belmond, and Kraft Foods, in Mason City, retiring in 2008.

On June 24, 1994, Steve was united in marriage to Kathy J. (Jesse) Kollman in Clear Lake.

Steve had a heart of gold; for the last eleven years he and Kathy would welcome numerous children into their home where they would serve as their foster and adoptive parents.

In his free time, Steve loved cheering on the Chicago White Sox. He also enjoyed motorcycling, remodeling, and was a dog lover. But he was his happiest when he was able to be with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Steve was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City as well as Alcoholics Anonymous.

He is survived by, his wife, Kathy Oulman, Mason City; children, Jill Oulman, Iowa City, Casey Oulman, Iowa City, Kelly (Jon) Geerlings, Iowa City, Keri Oulman, Mason City, Beayonka (Tim) Poulson, Fairmont, Minn., Annie (Rob) Moore, Des Moines, Jonathon Kollman, Onawa, BriAnne Kollman, Mason City, Teayona Oulman, Mason City, Nate Oulman, Mason City, Kristin Oulman, Mason City, Dakota Oulman, Mason City, Alonna Oulman, Mason City, and Chris Oulman, Mason City; his twelve grandchildren; his two sisters, Julia Oulman, Clear Lake and Patricia Berge, Clear Lake; his father-in-law, Eugene (Donna) Jesse, Park Falls, Wis.; and a nephew, Carlos Oulman, Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alice A. Scharlau

MASON CITY - Alice A. Scharlau, 70, of Mason City, died Friday (March 11, 2011) at the Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission, Texas. She and her husband, Lynn Scharlau, long-time Mason City business owners, were wintering in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas.

In accordance with her wishes, Alice was cremated.

Memorial services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Fullerton Funeral Home 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Officiating will be the Rev. Red Haugland and Tom Mitchell. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and again one hour prior to services.

Alice Ann was born on Aug. 22, 1940, in Osceola, the daughter of Leonard and Evelyn (Rick) Ashford. She was a graduate of Mason City High School, Class of 1958, and then from Hamilton Business School in 1959. Upon graduation, she went to work in the office at Interstate Power Company.

Alice was united in marriage with Lynn Scharlau on Dec. 30, 1959, at the First Christian Church. She was the office manager at Ideal Plumbing and Heating in Mason City, working alongside her husband. This was a third- generation family-owned business and she worked there for 28 years starting in 1983.

Alice was a very thoughtful and kind hearted person to family, friends and customers. She and Lynn enjoyed camping and became full-time RV campers for the last five years. They were very active in the Excel of Iowa camping club.

Alice is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lynn; son, John and his wife, Tina Scharlau, Mason City and daughter, Kay Staley, Meservey; her mother, Evelyn Carroll, Mason City; grandchildren, Brian (JoAnn) Scharlau, Des Moines; Brent Scharlau, Mason City, Brandon Scharlau, Mason City, Stacy Nachazel, Clear Lake, Tyler Staley, Meservey; Toni Hosler, Mt. Horeb, Wis. and her children, Braden and Logan; great-grandson, Jacob Scharlau, LeClaire; and uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Her father, Leonard; step-father, Jesse Carroll; son-in-law, Mark Staley, and brother-in-law, Jay Scharlau, preceded her in death.

Osage - Irene Hanke, age 86, of Osage, died Saturday (May 7, 2011) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the Sacred Heart Oratory in Meyer, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a Scripture Service at 5 p.m. and a Rosary at 7 p.m.
Irene was born Jan. 9, 1925, at Mona, the daughter of Walter and Frances (Paulus) Perzynski. Irene graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1944, she then attended the Frances Nystrom Beauty School in Minneapolis, Minn. Irene was united in marriage to John Hanke on June 11, 1949, at Sacred Heart Church in Osage. They farmed in the Stacyville- Meyer area. John died in 1989 and then Irene moved to Osage in 1993. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Christian Mother's Society in Meyer. Irene enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, antiquing, cooking and especially spending time with her family.

Irene is survived by her children, Richard (Joyce) Hanke of Lakeville, Minn., Robert (Rita) Hanke of Little Cedar, Janet (Calvin) Niess of Little Cedar, Randy (Mary) Hanke of Stacyville, Patricia (Patrick) Durkin of Shakopee, Minn., MaryAnn (Harold) Berg of Ahsahka, Idaho; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John; her son Ronald in 1966; an infant son, Howard; two sisters, Jeanette Johnson and Lydia Penney; two brothers, Edward and Theodore Perzynski.

Stoughton, Wis. - Phillip W. Kennedy, age 85, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday (May 5, 2011).

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at Covenant Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Van Buren St., Stoughton, Wis., with the Rev. Mark Petersen officiating.

Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon in the church fellowship hall immediately following the services. Entombment will take place in Roselawn Mausoleum.

Phillip W. Kennedy was born in Mason City, Iowa, on May 3, 1926, the son of Clarence and Jessie (Skellinger) Kennedy. Phil graduated from Madison East High School. On May 12, 1951, he married Sylvia Johnson in Stoughton, Wis.

Phil worked at Stoughton High School as supervisor of custodians and as a carpenter. He was a member of the Optimist Club and Covenant Lutheran Church of Stoughton. Phil enjoyed fishing on Lake Camelot and his fishing trip to Canada.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; three children, Gary, Barb (Tom) Bollig and David Kennedy; and two grandchildren, Tim Kennedy and Shelby Bollig.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gene Kennedy; and half-sister, Gretchen Munger.

HAMPTON - Dean Alan Dippel, 54, died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Hampton Rehabilitation Center in Hampton.

Dean was born on Nov. 30, 1956, to Vernon and Lily (Wenzel) Dippel of Belmond. He graduated from Belmond Community High School in 1975. After graduation, Dean joined the Air Force. After his discharge from the Air Force Dean attended Indian Hills Community College in Fairfield. He also attended a school of electronics in Des Moines.
Dean worked various jobs throughout his life time including Wal-Mart in Ames, Burke in Nevada and Winnebago Industries in Forest City. Most recently, Dean delivered Meals on Wheels to Rowan residents.

Dean's interests included NASCAR, computers and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Dean was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father Vernon Dippel and brother Dylan Dippel.

Dean is survived by his mother Lily (Wenzel) Dippel of Belmond, brothers Dennis Dippel and Daniel Dippel of Belmond and Daryl Dippel of Ankeny; sisters Dawn Dippel of Marengo, Ill. and Dixie (Tim) Daniels of Garner; nephews and nieces Nathan and Natalee Dippel, Nicholaus and Isaac Schmit, Emily (Josh) Latina, Bryant, Austin and Carter Dippel; Peter and Kandyce Daniels; and four great nephews.
