Thomas Joseph Brannon

SHEFFIELD - Funeral services for Thomas Joseph Brannon, 45, of Sheffield will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Greene, with the Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, where there will be a scriptural wake at 3 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday one hour before services.

Thomas Joseph Brannon was born Aug. 4, 1965, in Charles City, Floyd County, a son of Emmett and Velma (Gealow) Brannon. He died at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, after losing a courageous battle with cancer.

He received his education in the public schools, graduating from Greene High School in 1983. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene where he was baptized and confirmed.

Tom was a member of the AQHA, APHA, IPHC, MPHA, PHBA.

As a young man he was engaged in farming with his father on the farmstead. Tom devoted his life to his family. He also had a passion for horses. Tom, Amy, Derek and Deven as a family ran "West Fork Ranch" and were all actively involved in the business of training and trading horses all over the country.

Whenever you met Tom he always had a smile on his face whether he was building fence, working with the horses, traveling or enjoying a good meal. Tom enjoyed watching the boys at their school activities. Anybody who knew Tom was well aware of his competitive spirit whether it involved horses, cards or sports.

Tom is survived by his fiancé, Amy Heitland, and Tom's boys Derek and Deven; his mother, Velma Brannon of Greene; two brothers: Michael (Nancy) Brannon of Parkersburg and Phillip Brannon of Marble Rock; two sisters: Patricia (Dale) Mennenga of Clarksville and Jacqueline (Michael) Kramer of Shell Rock; nieces and nephews Jason, Candice (Todd) Thomas, Joseph Thomas, Brittany, Krista, Kayla, Emily, Michelle, Jeffrey, Jocelyn, Megan (Mitch) Murray, Michael (Danielle), Mason, Tanner, Hunter, Breyer, Brady, Brandon, Brianna, Brody, Breck, Jory, Corey (Ashley); aunts and uncles Donna Rogge, Jean Kohn, Doris Miller, Elmer (Clysta) Gealow, Roger (Bev) Gealow, Judy (Ed) Koler, Donald (Patti) Gealow, Diane (Greg) Riles; Amy's parents, Gary and Darlene Lindaman; Amy's siblings, Scott (Robin) Lindaman, Todd (Gail) Lindaman, Chad (Julie) Lindaman, Jodi (Brian) Angstman; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Emmett, in 2008.

Burial will be in Neosho County Memorial Gardens, Chanute, Kan., where full military honors will be conducted by member's of Chanute V.F.W.-American Legion Honor Guard.

Henry W. Anderson III
U.S. Army Air Corps WWII

MASON CITY - Henry W. Anderson III, 87, of 2003 Hunter's Ridge Drive, Mason City, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at the Heritage Care Center.

Hank was born March 23, 1923, in Bellevue, the son of Henry and Florence Bell Anderson. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1940 and attended the
University of Iowa from 1940 - 1943, when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He earned his wings in Pecos, Texas, and was sent overseas in Jan. 1945, to join the 4th Combat Cargo Group's 14th Squadron at Chittagong, Burma, serving for a time as co-pilot before becoming first pilot. This group supported the British troops in southern Burma. Later the squadron was transferred to Myitkyina, Burma, where they flew the Hump (Himalayan Mountains) into China in support of the Chinese Army.

During his military service he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal with three clusters, an Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon with two
bronze stars, and a commendation and Chinese wings from the General in charge of the Chinese Air Force.

Hank returned to the United States and was discharged in 1946, when he resumed his education at the University of Iowa where he received a B.S. degree in 1947.

On Aug. 15, 1947, he married Priscilla (Penny) Binns in Maquoketa. They spent the first year of their marriage attending the University of Iowa for Hank to earn teaching certification and for Penny to complete her B.A. degree. Hank later returned during summers for his Master's degree.

In 1948, they moved from Iowa City to Independence, where Hank taught high school science, later becoming principal of the middle school. For a time he was also the high school golf coach. In June 1969, he and his family moved to Mason City where he had accepted a position as Principal of John Adams Middle School. He retired from this position in June 1986.

Hank was a member of Wapsipinicon Golf Club, Independence, and later, the Mason City Country Club. He was an avid golfer from childhood until his health prevented his playing. He was a member of the American Legion, the Hump Pilot's Association, Presbyterian Church, and a former member of the Lion's Club.

Hank's family includes his wife of 63 years: Penny, and their children: Amy Hightower, Lucy Lowry (Dick), and Henry IV (Kathy). Six grandchildren: Travis Hightower, Christopher ( Emily), and Stephen Lowry, Molly, Sophie, and Libby Anderson.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Patience Jane Nelson.
There will be a gathering from 4 - 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Pierce, with the Rev. Paul Collier presiding. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Humane Society of North Iowa.

Shirley R. Begemann

CHARLES CITY - Shirley R. Begemann, 74, of Charles City died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Shirley Begemann will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and on Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Shirley Rose Albertson Begemann was born Jan. 7, 1937, in Bonair, the daughter of Theodore and Irene (Brooks) Albertson. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1954. Shirley worked at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo from 1954 to 1960.

On July 23, 1960, she was united in marriage to Harold Begemann at Waterloo. hey farmed south of Charles City until they retired and moved to Charles City in 1994.

Her interests included baking, bowling, doing puzzles, reading, golfing and going on two-mile walks. Shirley was a Hawkeyes fan but also enjoyed the Cyclones as well. She always looked forward to hosting holiday dinners. Spending time with family was always important to Shirley and she looked forward to attending the sporting events that the grandchildren were in.

Living family members include her husband of 50 years, Harold Begemann of Charles City; two sons, Craig (Julie) Begemann and Denny (Kim) Begemann, both of Charles City; four grandchildren, Lindsey (Brian) Mullenbach, Lauren (Caleb Lundberg) Begemann and Alexandra and Ryan Begemann; a great-grandson, Carson Mullenbach; and a sister, Doris (Gene) Bard of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Wayne Smith; three brothers, Thomas, Kenneth and Edward Albertson; and a sister, Esther Albertson.

Marlene Curtis

PLYMOUTH - Marlene J. Curtis, 74, of Plymouth, died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 20, 2011) at Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren Hospice in Keosauqua.

She was born Feb. 23, 1936, in Englewood, Calif., to Hershley and Marcella Dobbs Rutledge. She married Ray A. Curtis on Dec. 15, 1972, in San Diego, Calif. Marlene grew up in Englewood and Chula Vista, Calif. The Curtises lived in several locations during her husband's career in the U.S. Navy. They retired to Mason City amd moved to Plymouth in 1985. She had resided at the Good Samaritan Center since December 2005.

She had been a nurse aide at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City, and the Manly Nursing Home. She was a member of the Red Hat Society in Keosauqua and was very appreciative of her family and friends.

Survivg are her husband; two daughters, Debbie Salisbury (Dean) of Section, Ala., and Carmella Waite (David) of San Diego, Calif.; a son, Romney Goins (Kim) of Anchorage, Alaska; several grandchildren and great- grandchildren; and a brother, Laroy Rutledge of San Diego, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Rutledge; a sister, Dorothy Goins; and two grandchildren.

Her body has been cremated and no services are planned.

Edwin L. Greer was born May 27, 1921, at Neodesha, Kan., a son of Lyman and Grace (Mikesell) Greer.

He attended Newland School, Thayer, Kan., and served in the U.S.
Army during World War II. Following his discharge Edwin worked as a crane operator for Vanel Boise Co. on Guam.

Edwin returned to the United States and farmed in the Neodesha and Thayer, Kan., areas and also worked as a welder for Archer Daniels Midland Co.
He retired from farming in 2007.

He was a life member of the V.F.W. , Neodesha, Kan.

Edwin is survived by his special friend, Lila O'Donnell, Mason City; a brother, Jack Greer, Chanute, Kan.; two sisters, Grace Ellen McGoularick and Coleen Chambers, both of Eureka Springs, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and 13 brothers and sisters.

MASON CITY - Ethel M. Lang, 91, of Mason City died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, surrounded by her family.

Clara Beatrice "Bea" Riekena was born on Feb. 5, 1914, in Moorland, the daughter of Carl and Bertina (Haugland) Hauge. As a young child she moved with her family to Leland. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at West Prairie Lutheran Church near Leland and received her education at Burnap Country School near her home.

Bea cared for elderly people in their homes. She also waitressed at the Bungalow Café for a time as well as working at the Palace of Sweets. On Aug. 25, 1940, she was united in marriage to G.G. "Dutch" Riekena at West Prairie Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Forest City where they owned and operated a Mobil gas Station together.

When Dutch took a job as a rural mail carrier, Bea became a homemaker.

Bea was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was active in the Sarah Circle and WELCA. She was also a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to bake and always looked forward to going for coffee with her friends. Bea dearly loved her family and treasured time spent with them.

She is survived by two brothers and a sister: Bertrin (Marcella) Hauge of Lake Mills; Arnold (Helen) Hauge of Fertile; and Irene Eide of Leland; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Julia Thompson; a brother who died in infancy, Carl Bertrin Hauge; and two brothers, Abel and Byron Hauge.

John M. Whitney
U.S. Air Force

ROCKLAND, Wis. - John M. Whitney, 56, of Rockland, Wis., passed away Friday (Feb. 18, 2011) at his home.

He was born Dec. 4, 1954, in Mason City, to Royal and Barbara (Hartley) Whitney.
John was a 1973 graduate of Mason City High School. He was a veteran of the
United States Air Force, having served from 1976 until 1980.

On Aug. 7, 1976, he married Wendy Goll at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner. John obtained his associate degree in fisheries in Gresham, Ore., and was employed for 21 years at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in La Crosse, Wis., as a fish biologist.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Wendy; his father, Royal Whitney of Mason City; his sister, Mary (Rob) Stearns of Owatonna, Minn.; his brother, David (Jean) Whitney of Mason City; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Highway 162 and Hattan St., Bangor. Chaplain Sue Fletcher will officiate. Military honors will follow the service at the funeral home by the Anderson-Good American Legion Post 40 of Bangor and the United States Air Force Funeral Honor Guard. There will be no burial.

Mary A. Davis

AUSTIN, Minn. - Mary Alex Davis, 93, of Austin, Minn., died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at St. John's Lutheran Home, Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, 1311 Second St. S.W., Mason City, Iowa, with Father Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, and at the church for one hour before the service on Thursday morning.
Mary and her twin sister, Helen, were born June 8, 1917, in Mason City, to Thomas and Condilo Reres, the first set of twins at the new Mercy Hospital.

She attended McKinley School in Mason City. On March 3, 1936, she married Alex Davis in Mason City. Mary worked at Austin Public School for over 40 years and she worked at the Elks for many years and also helped out at the family business, Steve's Pizza.

In her spare time, Mary loved to cook, bake, play cards, entertain at her home and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Mary was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Rochester, Minn.

MASON CITY - Ethel M. Lang, 91, of Mason City died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City surrounded by her family.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling as celebrant. Interment will be held in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Ethel Marie Haverly was born on March 11, 1919, in Wesley to John and Clara (Johnson) Haverly. She attended school and graduated from Wesley High School. On April 18, 1939, she was united in marriage to Lawrence G. "Larry" Lang and to this union seven children were born.

For many years Ethel and Larry owned and operated Lang Distributing in Mason City. Every morning Ethel would tend to their children and the home and then head over to the business to work in the office. Ethel had an extraordinary work ethic that often went unmatched, but as busy as she kept there was always time for her children's activities.

Ethel was known by her family for baking, especially her trademark chocolate chip cookies, as well as cooking, bowling for many years, working bingo and gardening both flowers and vegetables. She also taught herself to play the organ by ear and loved playing "Heart of My Heart" and "Ally Cat."/

Although she kept a full schedule, Ethel and Larry were always available and helping at events at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Ethel's faith was the cornerstone of her life; she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and the St. Cecelia Circle. Her devotion was evident as she attended Sunday and daily Masses.

Those grateful in sharing in Ethel's life are her seven children, Marilyn (David) Myli, Fort Myers, Fla.; Larry (Joan) Lang, Jefferson; John "Jack" (Margaret) Lang, Mason City; Marcia (Jim) Siegel, Austin, Minn.; Richard (Cindy) Lang, Clive; Patrick (Sue) Lang, Ankeny; and Michael (Val) Lang, Ankeny; and 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Scott Myli; brother, Don Haverly; and sisters, Mary Lou Studer, Ruth Loebig and June Hauptman.

Robert Artes
U.S. Army Air Force WWII

BRITT - Robert Artes, 94, of Britt passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Hancock Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services for Robert will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Britt. Burial will immediately follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 25, from 5-7 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Robert Berdell Artes, son of Walter and Louise Artes, was born on May 28, 1916, at Ionia. Bob graduated from Ackley High School in 1934 and Gates College of Business two years later.

Bob was united in marriage to Kathleen Arends on June 22, 1941, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He was called to duty for his country and shipped out for England on Nov. 24, 1942, on the SS Queen Mary. Bob served overseas for nearly four years before returning home to his family. He served in the
Army Air Force 336th Squadron. During his stay in the service he received three promotions. His last rank was sergeant.

When Bob returned home from England he and Kay settled in Britt, where he owned and operated Artes Produce, retiring in 1973. Bob was an active member of numerous community organizations. Bob was the oldest member of First Lutheran Church in Britt, where he worshiped for over 65 years.

Bob had many interests and hobbies. He had a passion for fishing that included annual trips to Canada as well as when he introduced his new wife to his favorite pastime on their honeymoon. Golfing, traveling, playing cards with friends, keeping a watchful eye on his two farms in Hancock County and spending 27 winters in Florida kept him busy. Bob never seemed to have an idle moment. His catnaps were the fuel that kept him going as he headed out to a new project. Sitting still was not an option in his full and rich life. Bob had a strong faith that followed him wherever he went.

Bob is survived by his wife of 70 years, Kay; their three children, Tom Artes (Carol), Carol Haugland (Larry) and Jim Artes (Monica); grandchildren, Kristie, Jason, Shanna, Ashley, Jordan, Meghann, Katie and Erin; great-grandchildren, Dianna, Alexandra, Cassandra, Andrew, Robert, Abby and Sean; and sister, Frances Kurth.

Goldie G. Borg

FOREST CITY - Goldie G. Borg, 85, formerly of Forest City and most recently residing in Decorah, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at the Aase Hauge Home in Decorah.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Goldie Glenna was born April 1, 1925, to Chester and Evelyn (Blank) Geddes. She resided on the family farm in Hayfield with her parents until graduating from Hayfield High School in 1943. She then attended Waldorf College, graduating with a degree as a legal secretary in 1945. She met her future husband, Orville Borg of Forest City, during the war and upon his return home they became engaged, marrying on Sept. 22, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Hayfield.

After marrying, she and Orville carried on the traditions of the Borg family farm in rural Forest City until retiring from farming in 2002. They then moved into town, taking up residence in the former home of her parents. They enjoyed spending many winters in Florida as well as traveling throughout the United States and Europe.

Goldie served as the First Baptist Church secretary for 20 years from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, singing, researching family geneology and playing the organ and accordion.

She adored being a grandmother to her two grandchildren, Ethan and Erica Bjelland, and attended numerous school and church functions in support of their endeavors.

Goldie is survived by her daughter, Sue Bjelland (Scott), and her two grandchildren, Ethan and Erica, all of Decorah; sister-in-law, Mildred Ostrander of Titonka; brother-in-law, Don Chodur of Kensett; and sister-in-law, Arlys Hendrickson and her husband Nelson of Humboldt; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Orville and her parents.

Jo Anne Brandt

MASON CITY - Jo Anne Brandt, 78, of Mason City, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Heritage Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. There will be no visitation.

Per the family's request, her body has been donated to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jo was born May 14, 1932, in Fairfield, the daughter of Ernie and Florence (Baldwin) Peters. She graduated from Fairfield High School and later moved on to the University of Iowa, where she majored in radio-speech and dramatic art gaining experience at WSUI, the university radio station.

At Iowa, she met her husband. Jo and Duane were married June 8, 1952, in Waverly. For several years, Jo was employed at KGLO Radio and TV doing air time and writing commercials. Later on, she hosted foreign exchange students in her home and became regional director of the Student Exchange Program covering the states of Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.

In 1980, Jo discovered the multiple joys and frustrations of pottery and became a mud worker. She enjoyed the hobby that brought benefits of education, friends, and a lasting commitment to the MacNider Art Museum.

Jo was responsible to research, document and successfully apply to place the old Mason City Library, a Carnegie Building, to the list for historic preservation. In retirement, Jo and Duane traveled extensively by going to over 50 Elder Hostels and trips to Europe and Alaska.
Jo enjoyed needlework and served as regional representative in the Embroiders Guild. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes football fan, reader, enjoyed playing cards with her friends and volunteered for many years at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. Jo was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving of numerous committees through the years.

Jo is survived by her husband, Duane of Mason City; daughter, Deborah Brandt of Vienna, Va.; son, Barry (Tammy) Brandt of Cedar Rapids; and grandson, Aaron (Angela) Brandt of Denver, Colo.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jim.

CHARLES CITY -Francis T. Carolan, 83, of Charles City died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Francis Thomas Carolan was born Jan 18, 1928, in rural Lawler, the son of Frank and Alice (Whalen) Carolan. He received his education in Lawler and was a graduate of Lawler High School. On Oct. 24, 1949, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Hampton, he married Madonna Brown. To this union four children were born.

The couple lived and farmed near Waucoma and Lawler and in 1970 moved to Charles City where they continued their farming operation. Francis enjoyed listening to the farm markets, spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, playing cards and dancing to polka music.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Madonna; a son, John (Marianne) Carolan of Charles City; three daughters, Carolee (Terry) Stuffelbeam of McGregor, Joannie (Orlo) Njus of Lawler and Linda Taddonio of St. Paul, Minn.; a brother, Paul Carolan of Bullhead City, Ariz.; a sister, Ann Marie Ellingson of Omaha, Neb.; eight grandchildren, Brad Holschlag of Phoenix, Ariz., Craig (Jodi) Holschlag of Rochester, Minn., Curt (Dana) Njus of Pine Island, Minn., Tim (Brenda) Njus of Lawler, Jason (Kellie) Carolan of State Center, Jamie (Sherry) Carolan of Charles City, and Lucas Taddonio and Evan Taddonio, both of St. Paul, Minn.; and six great- grandchildren.

Grace M. Chamberlin

MASON CITY - Grace M. Chamberlin, 98, of Mason City died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the Spring Grove Cemetery in rural Nora Springs.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in Grace's name.

Grace Marie Theisen was born on June 30, 1912, in Des Moines to Lewis P. and Mathilda (Lange) Theisen. She received her education in the Mason City schools. On March 8, 1930, she was united in marriage to Lee R. Chamberlin.

Following the death of her husband in January of 1969, she was employed by Mason City Community Schools until her retirement in 1991.

Grace was a member of the North Iowa Genealogical Society, Iowa Retired School Personnel Association and Christian Science Church.

She is survived by her grandson, Jay F. Gorman, and his wife, Donna, of Longmont, Colo.; and three great-grandchildren, Timothy, Melinda and Mark and his wife, Vicki, and their two sons.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee; two daughters, Norma M. Gorman and Jeanne M. Larson; a brother, Ray Theisen; and a granddaughter, Linda J. Gorman.

Ilo Mae Stiehl Ehrhardt

WEST UNION - Ilo Mae Stiehl Ehrhardt, 93, of 5 Lakeview Drive, Mason City, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

A celebration of her life will be at a later time as Ilo Mae wished to be cremated.

Ilo Mae Selma Stiehl Ehrhardt was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 29, 1917, near Garnavillo, Iowa, to Karl and Iona (Pahlas) Stiehl. In 1919, the Stiehl family moved to rural St. Olaf.

Ilo Mae graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1934 and then attended Elkader Junior College. After graduation, she spent several years teaching country school in Clayton County.

On Aug. 20, 1939, she married Carroll G. Ehrhardt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, where she had been baptized and confirmed. Carroll and Ilo Mae then moved to Waterloo, where Carroll worked at Rath Packing Company and Ilo Mae at Kelvington's Floral Shop. Carroll joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. Ilo Mae and young son, Denny, moved back to live with her parents and grandmother. She once again taught rural school.

After Carroll's discharge, he farmed with his father-in-law until 1946 when he and Ilo Mae purchased the Hawkeye Locker in Hawkeye. They ran the locker until retirement in 1976. They then moved to West Union.

Ilo Mae's retirement included selling Tupperware for a few years. What she enjoyed the most was her 25 years as an Avon representative. In 2006, after Carroll's death, she moved in with her daughter in Mason City.

Ilo Mae is survived by a son, Dr. Dennis K. Ehrhardt of Lafayette, La.; a daughter, Debra L. Hanson of Mason City; three granddaughters, Deanna (Scott) Carew and Cindy (Robert) Kochansky, both of Canton, Ga., and Kristin L. Hanson, Mason City; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Kayleigh Carew and Julia and Katarina Kochansky all of Canton, Ga.

Ilo Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband who died in 2006; and a sister, Fern Walther.

Geneva Lucille (Torgerson) Hove

NORTHWOOD - Geneva Lucille (Torgerson) Hove, 92, St. Louis, Mo., and formerly of Northwood, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at the Bethesda Dilworth Nursing Home in St. Louis, Mo.

A funeral service for Geneva will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Geneva Lucille (Torgerson) Hove was born on July 19, 1918, in Hanlontown, the daughter of Olaf and Christena (Thorson) Torgerson. Geneva graduated from Northwood High School in 1936. In 1939, with friend, Elsie Lein, she opened the Paramount Café. Geneva's mother, Christena Torgerson, and sister, Mildred (Torgerson) Johnsrud, worked alongside Genny and Elsie to make the Paramount a popular place to eat in Northwood.

Genny was united in marriage to Rueben M. Hove in 1942 in Northwood and traveled with Rueben to various military bases from Colorado to Mississippi until Rueben was sent to Pearl Harbor.

Genny lived much of her adult life in St. Paul, Minn., with Rueben, JoAnn and Susan. Her mother came to live with Genny in 1952; she stayed with them until her death in November 1966. In her earlier years Genny enjoyed going to dances.

In 1998, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Genny moved to St. Louis, Mo., to live with her oldest daughter, JoAnn and her family. There she was able to enjoy her grandson and great-granddaughters. Susan (youngest daughter) joined the family in St. Louis in 1999. In January 2002, Genny moved to Bethesda Dilworth Nursing Home in St. Louis. Genny remained there until her death on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, JoAnn (Hove) (Melvin J.) Sanden, of St. Louis, Mo., and Susan (Hove) Franson of Ballwin, Mo.; grandchildren, Steven M., Madison, Lauren and Claire Sanden, all of Eureka, Mo.; niece, Katy (Johnsrud) (Allen) Jaspers of Northwood; and other extended family members and friends.

Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mildred Johnsrud, and brother-in-law, Bob Johnsrud.

Gertrude W. Stevens

MASON CITY - Gertrude W. Stevens, 93, of Mason City, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Gertrude was born Jan. 6, 1918, in Allamakee County, the daughter of William and Anna (Lubben) Ficken. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1934 before earning her teaching certificate from Teaching College in Cedar Falls. She taught schools in the rural Mason City area.

Gertrude was united in marriage to Edward Stevens on Aug. 27, 1938, in New Hampton. She and Edward lived southeast of Mason City their entire lives before recently moving to Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living. They enjoyed traveling all over the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, during their retirement years. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Club, Pleasant Ridge Woman's Club and St. Paul Lutheran Church.

She was very artistic and enjoyed painting china dishes at NIACC for her family and friends. Gertrude also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking and baking and will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew her.

Gertrude is survived by her husband of 72 years, Edward of Mason City; children, Phillip (Ann) Stevens of Gilbert, Ariz., Kay (David) Johnson of Mason City and Kenneth (Cathy) Stevens of Mason City; grandchildren, Cynthia (Michael) Iannacone of Gilbert, Ariz., Kathleen Stevens of Lake Forest, Calif., Jeffrey (Dawn) Johnson of Ida Grove, Lara (T.J.) Diekema of Mason City, Rebecca Stevens of Nora Springs, Dawn Stevens of Nora Springs, and Barbara (Jason) Grunklee of Brooklyn; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur Ficken of Dallas, Texas.

Harlan S. Stille

MASON CITY - Harlan S. Stille, 82, of Mason City passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Grace Evangelical Free Church, 440 N. Illinois Ave., with the Rev. Scott Davis officiating. Burial will be held in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, where a time for sharing of memories will be held at 6 p.m.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the
American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in Harlan's memory.

Harlan S. Stille was born on a farm west of Klemme on March 25, 1928, to Quinten and Evalyne (Crothers) Stille. He was one of four children. He was raised in the Klemme area and married Rose Ann Reinig on July 19, 1948, in Garner. They had five wonderful children.

Shortly after, they moved to Mason City and he worked for the local power company, where he rose from a lineman to district manager in his 40 years of dedicated service.
Harlan had many passions and fun hobbies, including his remote control, electricity, an ability to fix anything, teaching anyone, hunting and fishing.

For the past 22 years he and Rose Ann enjoyed retirement on the shores of Lake Irving. They also enjoyed the many close friends they had there.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Rose Ann; children, Glen (Connie) Stille, Bruce (Alice) Stille, Jo Ellen (Roger) Griffin, Stan (Mari) Stille and Patsy Piper; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry; a sister, Shirley Garfin; and many nieces and nephews.

Diane M. Trampel

KLEMME - Diane M. Trampel, 61, of Klemme died unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at her home in rural Klemme.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at the Klemme Community Hall, 204 E. Main St., Klemme. Pastor Kim Bachman will be officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Klemme Community Hall.

Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Diane's name may wish to consider the the Iowa High School Rodeo Association, the Belmond-Klemme Scholarship Foundations One or Two or a memorial of their own choice.

Diane Marlene Trampel was born Nov. 1, 1949, in Algona, to Ivadell and Charles Walton. Their family made their home in Des Moines and later moved to Napier. She graduated from United Community High School in Boone. Following high school she moved to Mason City and attended Hamilton Business School. Mason City is where she met her future husband, Richard Allen Trampel.

Diane was united in marriage with Rich on Aug. 21, 1971, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Ames. They made their home in Klemme where their union was blessed with two children; a daughter, Angela (Angie); and a son, Travis.

Following college Diane was employed by Wallace, Holland, Kastler and Schmitz. After staying home to start a family she got a job at Par Products in Klemme. Then in 1988 she began her career at the school as the Klemme board secretary. When the schools consolidated in 1994 Diane was transferred to Belmond, where she remained for the rest of her 23-year tenure at the school. She spent many long days, nights and weekends dedicated to making sure the school finances were in order.

Throughout the years Diane took on several extra jobs, including selling heat detectors, Maleluca, Christmas Around the World and Party Light Candles.

When Diane was not working she enjoyed many good times at the infamous Trampel Arena. At the ranch rodeos and ropings she was in charge of taking entries and recording times. Through the arena she touched the lives of many up and coming High School Rodeo stars. She and Richard loved to attend many of the rodeo and roping events around the surrounding states cheering on their young friends and Travis in the saddle bronc event. Diane also enjoyed her trips to Texas to visit her daughter and grand-dog Ashley. She also enjoyed going to the casino where she always dreamed of hitting the jackpot.

One of her most happy times in her later years was a trip the family took to Sweden for their Swedish son, Philip Herlitz's wedding to his wife, Anna. She enjoyed visiting the family's farm, seeing the big ships in Stockholm and the beautiful Swedish landscapes and architecture. The trip will not long be forgotten by the family.
Other hobbies included sewing, playing cards with family and friends and watching game shows.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Trampel; her daughter, Angie of Austin, Texas; son, Travis, of Klemme; mother-in-law, Ruth Trampel; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Vivian Walton of Story City, Duane "Dewey" and Marlene Walton of Napier and Devon and Deborah Walton of Andover, Minn.; sister-in-law, Joanne Vander Wolde of New Braunfels, Texas; sister-in-law, Dixie, and husband, Larry Treinen of Klemme; bother-in-law, Terry, and wife Tracy Trampel of Klemme; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ivadell Walton; grandparents, George and Viola Bolte Hiatt; father-in-law, Clarence Trampel; sister-in-law, Beverly Korleski; and brothers-in-law, Gerry VanderWolde, Bob Korleski and Greg Nelson and nephew Cory Walton.

Harriet Willand

NORTHWOOD - Harriet Willand, 65, of Northwood died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Daniel Hart officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood.

Harriet Ann Peterson was born Aug. 29, 1945, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Henry and Alice (Christian) Peterson of Scarville. She attended school and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1963. She then attended Austin Area Vocational School (now Riverland College), Austin, Minn., where she was certified as a licensed practical nurse upon graduation. She was united in marriage to Warren Willand on April 25, 1964, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, and from this union three children were born.

For 41 years she worked as a nurse, the last seven years at the Mercy Medical Clinic, Northwood. In addition to her career she served as a caregiver to her immediate and extended family. Countless sutures, fractures, illnesses and hospitalizations were treated under her guidance.

Harriet was fond of traveling, her eight grandkids, reading books on her Kindle, playing organ and piano, and fishing and reading in a boat at the same time. Also she was a collector of many angel figurines. She was known for her many years of organ playing at First Lutheran Church and surrounding area churches.

She is preceded in death by both of her parents; father-in-law, Walter Willand; brother, Harlan Peterson; sister-in-law Joyce Willand; and nephew, Ryan Peterson.

The family members who were graced by her life were Warren Willand (husband of 46 years); her three children, Wesley and his wife Linda; their children Walter and Elizabeth; Sara and her husband, Steve, and their children, Spencer, Skyler, Sawyer and Sage; and Dan and his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Ian and Alex; mother-in-law, Ellnora Willand; brother, Homer Peterson and his wife Penny; along with Wayne Willand and his wife, Beverly; brother-in-law, Ward Willand and his wife Emilie; and Linda Peterson sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa.

Eugene J. Wood

GARNER - Eugene J. Wood, 78, of Garner died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Private family services will be held. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.

There will be no visitation.
