Bertha Brown
GARNER
- Bertha Brown, 100, of Britt, formerly of Garner, died Saturday, Feb.
12, 2011, at the Summit House Retirement Community in Britt.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, at the
United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. Sandy Gobeli
officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 18, at the
Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, and will continue one hour prior to
services at the church.
Bertha was a caring and vivacious lady, who celebrated her full life
with dignity and dedication to her family, her friends, and her Lord.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1910, in Perry, Okla., she was raised in
Garner, by Henry and Myra Henschen, her aunt and uncle. She graduated
from Garner High School in 1929 and, after teaching country school for
four years, attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Bertha
always took leading parts in class plays, music and sports. She was
valedictorian of her high school class, and her class at Hamilton. She
met Leo, her husband of 52 years, while teaching school and they were
married on Sept. 3, 1935, in Mason City.
They had their only child, Douglas Brown, on June 18, 1941. Bertha
worked in Garner and did substitute teaching. In 1950 she began working
for Charles Whitney, superintendent of county schools. Whitney was a
wonderful mentor, who helped guide her into her new career, at the
courthouse. In 1952, she became county drainage clerk, "My best job of
all, where I met so many nice farmers, who became my close friends." In
1974, she was appointed county auditor, and in 1976 she won re-election.
During her time as auditor, she supervised the building of a new county
come, new law enforcement center, and all county level elections. During
retirement, Bertha kept in touch with the county supervisors, as
secretary to the County Planning and Zoning Board, and the County
Assessors. For three years she was president of the Hancock County
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Board, a life-time member of the Garner
Progressive Club and Order of Eastern Star, holding most offices there.
She was also very active in the Garner United Methodist Church. Bertha's
hobbies were playing canasta and "500." She later belonged to three
bridge clubs. She loved to host her guests, with all sorts of her
favorite baked goodies. She also collected and wrote poems. When her
husband died in 1987, she often said, "I was overwhelmed with the
outpouring of kindnesses and all the friendship given me, during his
illness and death. What would we do without our dear friends?" To "have
a friend, you must be a friend", and she lived by this motto all of her
life. She thrived on doing for others, when she had little time. She
just made time. She made many new friends, when she moved to Summit
House Apartments in Britt two years ago. She thrived on the social
atmosphere, her new friends and the personal attention she received from
the wonderful staff. She remained active throughout her later years,
going bowling with her family on her 80th birthday. Not slowing down,
she attended a Michigan State football game with her three
grandchildren, when she was 90. She lived for life, and many times said,
"Oh, I wish I could be active again, and go back to work at the
courthouse." She celebrated her 100 years of life last December, with
family and friends. She continued to touch the hearts and lives of
others, even strangers, in so many ways. She had an amazing zest for
life. She said "Please miss me, but now I must go home."
She is survived by her son, Douglas and his wife, Bernetta, of
Crownsville (Annapolis), Md.; three grandchildren, Scott and Brandi of
Los Angeles, Calif., and Kristin and her husband, David Nowaczyk, of
Howell, Mich., with their Audrey Diane, Bertha's new
great-granddaughter.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her three sisters in
Oklahoma; her first granddaughter, Stacy Elizabeth; and her close
sister-in-law, Ruth Brown.
The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
be made in her name to Iowa-Hospice, 18 E. Main Street Suite 2, New
Hampton, IA 50659 or International Retts Syndrome Foundation, PO Box

Harvey Pederson
THOMPSON
- Harvey Pederson, 92, of Thompson, passed away at Mary Greeley Medical
Center in Ames, on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011.
His funeral ceremony will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in
Thompson, on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Decker
officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.
Visitation will be one hour before the service at Bethany Lutheran
Church in Thompson.
Harvey Palmer Pederson was born in Butterfield, Minn., Jan. 31, 1919, to
Ole and Anna (Hoversten) Pederson. The family moved to their farm in
Thompson, in 1920. Harvey graduated from Thomson High School in 1937,
and attended the Agricultural School at the
University of
Minnesota.
He married Marjorie Carolyn Jacobson in 1954, and they raised four
children: Paul, Janet, Carl and David.
Harvey was active as a 4-H leader, and former president of the local
Farm Bureau. He served as president on the church council of the Bethany
Lutheran Church. He was a dependable, generous and loyal friend and
neighbor, and was passionate about the local history of his community.
Harvey was proud of his farming heritage and enjoyed caring for the
variety of livestock throughout his farming career. He enjoyed raising
beef, swine, sheep, various poultry, and beekeeping. It was common to
watch mismatched sets of duck and geese as well as the family dog follow
Harvey across the farm as he went about his chores.
Harvey was an avid ham radio operator. His call letters "WØDZC" were
familiar to fellow hams near and far, and he spent many rewarding hours
keeping in touch with them. Harvey liked trains, planes and automobiles.
He enjoyed fishing all around the area with his hometown friends and his
children. His favorite toy of all time was a miniature, working steam
engine. As an adult, he loved Old Threshers' Reunions, an interest
generated, perhaps, from that childhood toy. And he kept his youthful
interests alive as his children learned and played with a well used
collection of minibikes, go-carts, and snowmobiles that turned the
farmyard into a true playground.
His wit was quick, his humor always kind. The greatest joy in his life
was his marriage to Marjorie and the family they had together. He KNEW
he had wonderful kids, and he was a caring father who nurtured their
interests and took pride in their accomplishments. These feelings were
awakened again when their grandchildren were born. He loved "those
little boys"-William, John and Bobby came first, and in December he was
able to meet and hold his newest grandson, Andrew, just 6 weeks old.
Harvey was a romantic. He presented Marjorie with heart shaped,
beribboned boxes of candy for Valentine's day and lovely jewelry at
Christmas. He sang "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" in a strong tenor
voice when he came downstairs in the morning, and he was on key. He was
drawn to the exotic lure of far away places, and longed to visit them.
He compensated by watching travelogues on TV. As for many men in his age
cohort, the history and battles of the Second World War were fascinating
to him. Harvey also had a gift for engaging in conversation with any
stranger and would soon have them cheerfully talking about everything.
Harvey retired from farming in 1989, and he and Marjorie remained on
their farm until Marjorie's death in 2007.
Harvey is survived by his children: Paul of Tucson, Ariz.; Janet (Scott
Lemke) of Plano, Texas; Carl of Stanhope, Iowa; and David (Kris Thierry)
of Plano, Texas; and his grandchildren William, John and Robert Lemke,
and Andrew Pederson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Anna Pederson, and wife
Marjorie.
