Ardis "Ardie" Dieterich
OSAGE - Ardis Dieterich, 86, of Osage, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011,
at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Rock
Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., Osage, with the Rev. R.
Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home in Osage.
Ardis Carol Dieterich was born Sept. 13, 1925, in Mitchell County. She
was the daughter of Myron and Pearl (Olsen) Maakestad. Ardie was
baptized and confirmed and was a lifelong member of Rock Creek Lutheran
Church, rural Osage. She attended rural school and graduated from Osage
High School in 1944. After graduation, she was employed by Northwestern
Bell Telephone Company.
On Nov. 2, 1946, she was united in marriage to Fred Dieterich of Rudd at
Rock Creek Lutheran Church. This marriage was blessed with three sons,
Maurice, Michael and Jim. Fred and Ardie farmed in the St. Ansgar area
until 1987 when they retired and moved to Osage. She enjoyed many types
of music, hand work, cooking and baking. Ardie and Fred enjoyed their
family and going to see their grandchildren in all of their activities.
She also appreciated her many good friends and neighbors.
Ardie is survived by her husband, Fred Dieterich, of Osage; her son,
Maurice (Dianne) Dieterich of Shelby Township, Mich., and sons, Nathan
and Nikolas; her son, Michael (Lori) Dieterich of Burlington, and sons,
Gregory and Matthew; her son, Jim (Ruth) Dieterich of Galesburg, Ill.,
and children, William, Joel and Kristina.
She is also survived by one brother, Gene (Barbara) Maakestad of Osage;
one niece; three nephews; and one sister-in-law, Betty Dieterich of
Osage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ardis Kathleen;
and one brother-in-law, Hubert Dieterich.

Steven Michael Factor
MASON CITY - Steven Michael Factor, 67, of Mason City, died Monday,
Dec. 5, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Steven was born Jan. 28, 1944, in Leavenworth, Kan., the son of Bonnie
Factor Storck and Kenneth Post. Steven attended Woodward State School
from August 1950 to May 1967. He then moved to Good Shepherd Health
Center in Mason City where he spent the rest of his life being supported
by the caregivers there who became his family.
Steven enjoyed country music, stuffed animals, Mountain Dew, tomato soup
and he loved spending Christmas with the staff and residents of Good
Shepherd Health Center. Steven touched the lives of many and will be
sadly missed by the residents and staff of Good Shepherd Health Center.
Steven will be remembered at the monthly Good Shepherd Health Center
Memorial Service to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 10 am.

CITY - Richard J. "Dick" Haiden, of Mason City, died Wednesday, Dec. 14,
2011, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17,
at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.W., Mason City, with the
Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling as celebrant. Interment will follow in Memorial
Park Cemetery, Hwy. 122 West, Mason City, where military honors will be
provided by members of the Iowa Military Funeral Honor Guard.
A visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 16, from 4-6 p.m. at
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City,
where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 5 p.m., followed
by a scriptural wake service.
Should friends desire, Dick's family has requested that in lieu of
flowers, memorials be made to
a favorite charity
in Dick's name.
Richard John Haiden was born on Dec. 14, 1922, on a farm just north of
Millerville, Minn., the son of Joseph and Mary (Hermas) Haiden. He was
one of 11 brothers and sisters. He spent his childhood on the farm and
attended St. Mary Parochial school in Millerville through eighth grade
and Brandon High School in Brandon, Minn.
In January of 1941 Dick enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC). He served 18 months at Co. 3709 in Walker, Minn., doing a variety
of work mostly centered on reforestation of land that had been most
logged for lumber in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
He returned home and helped his dad on the farm until April of 1943 at
which time he entered the military. He was assigned to the U.S.
Army
Air Force. He served with the First Emergency Rescue Squadron in the
European theater Eight Airforce as an aircraft sheet metal worker.
Reassigned to the 7th Emergency Squadron, he served in the Asiatic and
Pacific theaters. He received his honorable discharge on Dec. 4, 1945.
He attended St. John's University, Collegeville, Minn., for three
semesters and the Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis for 18
months to learn the sheet metal trade. He was a highly skilled craftsman
and loved the sheet metal trade. He worked in mostly heating air
conditioning and ventilation but also blow pipe and architectural sheet
metal. He taught evening classes in the Los Angeles Joint Apprenticeship
Program in the L.A. City School system for 15 years.
Dick married Lucile Luketic of East Chicago, Ind., on Nov. 4, 1956. A
daughter, Ann Marie, was born to this marriage. Lucile died Dec. 10,
1960.
He married Mae Studer in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., on May 19, 1962. A
daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was born to this union.
Dick was a current member of Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 105, Los
Angeles, Calif., Knights of Columbus Council 1006, a Fourth Degree
member of Msgr Daugherty Assembly, Knights of Columbus,
Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post No. 733
of Mason City, and the American Legion Post No. 101.
He loved fishing, crosswords, playing cards, reading, especially
history, and his hobby, woodworking. He never owned a house that he
didn't extensively remodel. He did all the work himself, including
designing, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, shingles and shakes, dry
walling and painting. Above all he loved his family.
Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife, Mae; daughters, Ann
Haiden, Los Gatos, Calif., and Mary (Cameron) Skill, Downey, Calif., two
grandchildren, Michelle Skill and Elizabeth Skill, Downey, Calif.; a
brother-in-law, Gerald (Kitty) Studer, Mason City; two sisters-in-law,
Julia Jarvis, Guntersville, Ala., and Mary Ann (Matt) Haiden; brother,
Joseph; sisters, Isabel Barker, Josephine (Richard) Sperl and Joan
(Ross) Prout; and special friends Herbert and Florence Goepel, Santa Fe
Springs, Calif.
Preceding Richard in death are his parents, Joseph and Mary Haiden; his
wife, Lucile; an infant sister, Margaret Anna; four brothers, James,
Mathias, Herbert and Raymond; a sister, Margaret May; brothers-in-law,
George Kelch, Ed Downs, Fred Jarvis, Leo Young and Earnest Gerdis;

GRAFTON - Kermit Irving Huebner, 85, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011,
at his home in Grafton, surrounded by his family, after a short battle
with brain cancer.

CITY - Edward Francis O'Donnell, 92, of 2060 S. Kentucky Ave., died
Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael

Edward F. O'Donnell was born on March 29, 1919, in Mason City, the son
of D. Edward and Josephine (Fitzgerald) O'Donnell. He attended and
graduated from the Holy Family Catholic School. Following graduation, he
enlisted in the United States
Army
in 1942, serving as a truck driver before being honorably discharged in
1945.
He worked at Jacob E. Decker and Sons, a meat packing plant. Edward met
Mildred Prescott at the Surf Ballroom and they were united in marriage
on Sept. 17, 1947, at the Holy Family Rectory, Mason City. To this
union, Edward and Mildred were blessed with four children, Kathryn,
Mavis, Glennis, and Dennis. They moved to a farm northeast of Mason City
where he farmed for many years, eventually retiring at the age of 85.
Edward and Mildred enjoyed dancing, wintering in Texas and the many
activities at the senior center. He was also active at the senior center
for many years. He was an avid card player, involved in the Neighborhood
Card Club and the 500 Saturday Night Card Club.
Edward was a lifelong parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church and was
a member of Knights of Columbus.
Left to cherish his memory includes his children, Kathryn (Navarro)
Torres, Mason City, Mavis (Doug) King, Mason City, Glennis (Mike)
Kelley, Nora Springs, and Dennis (Barb) O'Donnell, Mason City;
grandchildren, Michelle (Alan) Kristofitz, Katie Torres and Brad Angell,
Megan Torres, Kristina Torres, Tamie (Monte) Ames, Tiffany O'Donnell,

William Dean O'Hern
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - William Dean O'Hern passed away Saturday, Nov.
26, 2011, at his home in San Antonio, Texas, after a six-year illness.
William, the son of Susie and the late Maurice O'Hern, was born in
Britt, Iowa, April 13, 1946.
Survivors include his wife, Nickie, son Jerry, daughter Donna, three
grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, all of San Antonio, Texas;
his mother, Susie O'Hern of Britt, five sisters, Sue Richardson of
Britt, Vickie Frost of Garden City, Kan., Debra Weringa of Wesley, Becky
Garman of Wesley and Maureen Elsesmeyer of Denver.
Military graveside services were at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Tom was born May 10, 1917, in Albia, the son of Charles and Ethel (Wood)
Teas. He spent his childhood in Dallas, Iowa, and graduated from Dallas
High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946 as a
major (WWII - Pacific Theater).
Tom continued his education at the
University of Iowa,
graduating with a law degree in 1947, with high distinction, Order of
the Coif and Phi Beta Kappa. On Oct. 24, 1973, he married Dorothy
Cantrell Balfanz in Chicago, Ill. Tom partnered with Finley, Teas and
Esser Law Firm for 65 years, before retiring in 1993. He was a member of
the Cerro Gordo County Bar Association (past president), the Second
Judicial District Bar Association, the Iowa Bar Association and the
American Bar Association.
He was also a member of the Lions Club, the Mason City Country Club
(more than 50 years), the U.S. Jaycees (serving as chairman of the
Americanism Committee), and a former member of the Masonic Lodge and
Elks Lodge.
Tom served on several boards including the Board of Education for the
Mason City Public Schools, the board of directors for the Iowa Health
Planning Council, and the board of WellbornIndustries Ltd. where he
served as chairman. He was a loyal participant of the Easter Seal
Society and served in various capacities including national president.
Tom was among the founders of Opportunity Village and a strong supporter
of NIVIC.
Tom is survived by his wife of 38 years, Dorothy Teas of Mason City;
children, Gregory Teas, Md., and wife, Shaku, of Chicago, Ill., and
Susan Smith and husband, David, of Naperville, Ill.; one stepson,
Richard Balfanz and wife, Peggy, of Oshkosh, Wis.; five grandchildren:
Ethan Teas, Sonia Teas, Zachary Smith, Alex Balfranz and Kimberly
Chelsvig; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth
Teas and Martha Jane Teas; two brothers, Charles Teas Jr. and Herbert
Teas; and one sister, Muriel Mappin.

LAKE - Nell Irene Wilcox, 97, Clear Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011,
at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
A private inurnment was held at the Clear Lake Cemetery with Pastors
Jill and Bob Brandstad of the Community of Christ Church officiating.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be
given to the Community of Christ Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Nell was born Jan. 28, 1914, in Logan, Harrison County, the daughter of
Earl and Wilma (Gunnette) Leonard. She attended country school and
graduated from Logan High School.
She married Arthur Wayne Wilcox Aug. 24, 1936, in Logan. She worked
side-by-side with Wayne in a grocery business in Council Bluffs. In
1952, they moved to Clear Lake where they purchased Wilcox Furniture
from Wayne's brother, Wendell. Nell was involved in all facets of the
business from accounting to sales to purchasing, and of course,
decorating. She worked with him in the furniture store for more than 30
years and when her mother came to live with them, she retired.
Nell was a member of the Community of Christ Church, where she taught
Sunday school, was a Women's Group leader, sang in the choir and was
choir director. She was a member of Wa Tan Ye, Clear Lake Women's Club,
and TTT. Nell enjoyed painting with oil, bowling, golfing and traveling.
She and Wayne spent 19 winters in Mission, Texas.
Nell is survived by her daughter, Janelle Sargent and her husband, Dale,
Clear Lake; two grandchildren, Jennifer Moore and her husband, Bruce,
Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jeff Sargent and his wife, Heather, Highland,
Utah; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Stephen Moore, and Sophia and
Isabella Sargent; sister, Maxine Lloyd, Kennewick, Wash.;
sisters-in-law, Zola Beth Leonard, Woodbine, Iowa, and several nieces
and nephews; and her "Wilcox Furniture family."
Nell was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne Wilcox; and
two brothers, Reuben Leonard and Ivan Leonard.

CITY - Richard "Dick" Sherwood Berner, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011,
surrounded by his loving family, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at the Our
Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson, Mason City, with Pastor
Emily Horrell officiating. A private family inurnment will be in the
Plymouth Cemetery, Plymouth.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the
church on Monday.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Our Saviour's
Lutheran Church, Mason City.
Richard Sherwood Berner was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Mason City, the son
of Clayton and Frances (Sherwood) Berner. He graduated from Mason City
High School.
On July 2, 1949, he was united in marriage to Catherine Dirksen. Dick
enlisted into the
United States Marine Corps
on July 20, 1948, and was later honorably discharged.
Dick was united in marriage to Barbara Chehock on Jan. 17, 1969. Dick
was a salesman working with different companies. He later started his
own business, Dick's Delivery, and was known as the "Peddler."
Dick enjoyed square dancing, card club, telling stories and tinkering.
He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for several years. Dick was a
member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
Dick is survived by his wife Barbara Berner, Mason City; children Jean
Berner, Mason City, Tish (Lance) Arnold, Klemme, John (Crystal) Berner,
Jefferson City, Mo., Derek (Lori) Wolcott, Spokane, Wash., Dana (Julie)
Wolcott, Lake Stevens, Wash., and Dale (Cathy) Wolcott, Peoria, Ariz.;
grandchildren, Sara, Bradi, Kelly, Robert, Devin, Dalton, Kenneth,

City - James L. Bird, age 71, of Mason City, passed away Thursday, Dec.
15, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City.
Jim requested there be no funeral and was cremated.
There will be a family and friends gathering. This will be held from 4-7
p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, at the home of Mick Baker, 1433 Birch Drive,
Mason City.
James LeRoy "Jim" Bird was born March 13, 1940, in Sheffield, to Alfred
and Helen (Miller) Bird. Jim graduated in 1958 from Nora Springs High
School.
Jim was a bricklayer in the Mason City area and was considered by some,
one of the finest. Many buildings and homes in Mason City and
surrounding areas have the special touch of his expertise in fireplaces
and brick fronts.
Jim was an avid Vikings, Twins and Hawkeye fan, and for years made sure
he attended at least one game each year. He also enjoyed fishing in
Canada with life-long friends and golfing with his foursome every
Sunday. Jim also enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids.
Jim is survived by his wife Karen of 47 years; two sons, Rick (Tammy)
Bird, Mike (Judy) Bird; and a daughter, Sue Kral and special friend,
Greg Bradbury; six grandchildren, Chelsie (Cole), Mandie (Dave), Jacob (Britany),
Nathan (Courtney), William and Shelby, three great-grandchildren,
Carter, Amelia and Colton; a sister, Linda Anderson; a brother, Bob
(Connie) Bird; and a brother-in-law, Mick Baker; sister-in-law, Cathie
Baker; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Barbara J. Kelley was born on July 27, 1930, in Mason City, the daughter
of James and Barbara C. (Jansen) Kelley. She attended St. Joseph
Catholic School in Mason City and graduated amongst the Class of 1948.
On Feb. 16, 1952 Barbara was united in marriage to L. Gene Gallogly in
Mason City; this union would be blessed with four children.
For many years Barbara enjoyed traveling with and listening to Gene's
Barbershop Quartet groups, the Astronaughts, Midwest Four, and the
Buffalo Chips. She also liked playing the piano, bowling for the Knights
of Columbus mixed league, doing needlework, attending many different
community events and activities with the Women's Club, and the
occasional trip to a casino.
In 1970, Barbara began working as a switchboard operator for Park
Hospital, which would later merge with Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa,
until her retirement. In the years following retirement, Barb spent
countless hours volunteering for Mercy Medical Center, St. Joseph
Catholic School, St. Joseph Catholic church and numerous other
organizations.
Barb was devoted to her family and her faith. She cherished every moment
she was able to spend with her husband, children, grandchildren, and
great- grandchildren. She would travel near and far to watch and support
her grandchildren in their musical and athletic activities.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Leo Rose Circle,
Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Women's Club, and Parish Life Society.
Those grateful in sharing in Barbara's life are her husband, Gene;
children, Ralph (Peijan) Gallogly, Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Barb (Dr. Stuart

- Kermit Irving Huebner, 85, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at his home
in Grafton, surrounded by his family, after a short battle with brain
cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at the
Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with Pastor Mark Decker officiating.
Following the memorial service, there will be a time for lunch and
fellowship at the church. Private family inurnment services will be held
at the Grafton Cemetery at a later date. There will be a flag
presentation by Grafton American Legion Post 616.
Kermit Huebner was born June 18, 1926, in rural Grafton, to Irving and
Lilly (Tabbert) Huebner. He graduated from Grafton High School in 1944.
Kermit served in the U.S. Army, spending a year in Germany.
He worked for Western Union, Grafton Implement, Sugar Beet, and Waters
Electronics. He also worked in the trucking business, and later started
his own radio and television business and a paint contracting business.
He was currently employed as the caretaker and groundskeeper for the
Grafton Cemetery. Kermit was a volunteer fireman for 15 years, served on
the town council, was a member of various boards for the Emmanuel
Church, and was a member of the American Legion.
Kermit married Elaine Bublitz on Aug. 6, 1950, in Grafton and together
they raised four daughters. His greatest love after family was music.
Kermit was well known throughout northern Iowa for his musical talent.
Kermit and his keyboard were often seen at celebrations which included
Turkey Days, area nursing homes, and several Kensett Variety Shows. He
was also a member of the "Rhythm Masters" band. Kermit had a great
talent in woodworking and enjoyed crafting furniture for his family.
Kermit is survived by his wife, Elaine of Grafton; his daughters,
Jeannine (Bob) Peterson of St. Ansgar, Deborah (Gary Orth) Huebner of
Zimmerman, Minn., Cheryl Huebner of St. Ansgar, and Pat (Mike) Clark of
St. Ansgar; sister, Darlene Greenway of Sebring, Fla.; mother-in-law,
Lucille Bublitz of St. Ansgar; brother-in-law, David (Debby) Bublitz of
Carpenter; his good friend and cousin, Dale (Carol) Huebner of Mason
City; and his special furry friend, Henry.
Proud to call him "Grandpa" are Ara (Corey) Lotzer, Arik (Shelly)
Peterson, Matthew Kleckner, Luke (Jhumki) Kleckner, Christina (Mike)
Hultman, John Kleckner, Joe (Kara) Walk, Sam Walk, Josh (Amy) Walk, Taya

ROCK -Stephen L. Koenigsfeld, 79, of Marble Rock, passed away Wednesday,
Dec. 14, 2011, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
A funeral Mass will be at St. Mary Catholic Church, Roseville, today,
Saturday, Dec. 17, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Monsignor Walter Brunkan
officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Roseville, with
honor guard presentation of colors by the Charles City Patriot
Association.
Visitation was held 5-8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16, at the St. Mary Catholic
School Gym in Roseville with a Wake Service at 7 p.m.
Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church
today.
Stephen L. Koenigsfeld was born Jan. 10, 1932, in Floyd County, to Dan
and Mabel (Osier) Koenigsfeld. He received his education at St. Mary's
School and Marble Rock Senior High. While in high school, Stephen
enjoyed playing baseball and working on the farm. In 1951, Stephen
joined the Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the
Korean Conflict
until his honorable discharge in 1953. While serving in the Air Force,
he was united in marriage to Mary Friedrichs on Dec. 31, 1952.
To this union three sons and one daughter were born.
Stephen lived his entire life in and around the Marble Rock area. He had
been employed at Haller Lumber Co. in Marble Rock, for 37 years. He
actively served on the Marble Rock Volunteer Fire Department for 38
years, was a lifetime member of the American Legion, served on the
Marble Rock City Council, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Stephen enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and enjoyed
fishing, hunting, dancing, and was and avid sports fan. He will be
remembered for his story telling and sense of humor.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary, four children:
Marty (Sue) of Des Moines, Jeff of Marble Rock, Lorri (Brian) Chambers
of Marble Rock, Dan (Kerry) of Ankeny: six grandchildren: Tony,
Stephanie, Josh, Seth, Emily, Stephen, Sarah; two step-grandchildren:
Matt, Dan; three great-grandchildren (the little squirts): Keely,
Mckinley, Emberlyn; three step- great-grandchildren: Lily, Greg,
Nicholas; two brothers: Aloysius, Peter; four sisters: Cecilia, Dorothy,
Mary, Bernadette; several sisters- in-law, brothers-in- law, dozens of
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters: Joanne,
Genevieve, Elaine, and Theresa; step-granddaughter: Lisa; step
great-granddaughter: Addy Mae.

- Nancy Kay (Steffensen) Monson, age 63, departed to her heavenly home
on Dec. 16, 2011, from St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following
a long struggle with cancer and other infections.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp
officiating. Burial will take place in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural
Lake Mills.
Visitation with her family will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20,

Nancy Kay (Steffensen) Monson was born on Sept. 11, 1948, to DeVere and
Clarine Steffensen of Leland. She was baptized, confirmed, and married
at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.
Nancy Monson graduated from Lake Mills Community Schools in 1966. She
earned her Associate of Arts from Waldorf College in Forest City and her
Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from Mankato State University.
Nancy was united in marriage to David C. Monson on July 29, 1972. Nancy
had a heart of gold. She was a loving, giving individual, and was known
as the listening ear to many of her colleagues at Forest Elementary
School, where she taught elementary art for 26 years. Her Christian
faith and caring spirit were apparent to all who knew her and came to
her for support, as well as to the many students and parents whose lives
she touched throughout the years.
Nancy was an avid quilter and cherished the time she spent with her
quilting group friends and the couples Bible study group she and Dave
belonged to for many years. Nancy's hobbies included quilting,
gardening, art in its many forms, music and singing, and the frequent
family gatherings with the "Aunts of the Oval Table" and the entire
family.
In 1983, Nancy was selected as the Iowa Young Mother of the Year. She
was active in 4-H both as a member and as a leader, as well as serving
on county committees. Nancy and David served on the board of New
Horizons Adoption Agency.
Nancy leaves behind her faithful, loving husband, David, and two
daughters, Anne Kristine and Kathleen (Katie) Elizabeth, both of Leland.
She is also survived by her mother, Clarine Steffensen of Lake Mills;
and siblings Lou Ann (Richard) Mikes of Ventura and Sanibel, Fla.;
Patricia (Curtis) Nelson of Northwood, Julie (Leigh) Foster of Boone,
Rebecca (Larry) Hill of Thompson, and DeRay (Karen) Steffensen of
Goshen, Ind.; brother-in-law Paul (Marilyn) Monson, Newell; and nine
nephews, six nieces, and 17 great-nephews/nieces.
Nancy was preceded in death by her father DeVere Steffensen; a nephew
Michael Nelson; grandparents; parents-in-law Cynthia and Bert Monson;
and brother-in-law Gary Monson.

BRIGHTON, Minn. - Alma Antonia (Poser) Littlefield entered her heavenly
home Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at the Benedictine Health Center of
Innsbruck, New Brighton, Minn., surrounded by her family.
A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. (gathering beginning at 6
p.m.) Tuesday, Dec. 20, at North Heights Lutheran Church, 2701 N. Rice
St., Roseville, Minn.
Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
Alma was born on Feb. 19, 1920, in Buh Township, Minn., the daughter of
Herman and Theresia (Zierer) Poser. Alma grew up on the family farm in
Pierz, Minn., with twelve brothers and sisters and attended Pierz area
schools. She was united in marriage to Charles (Chuck) Littlefield on
Oct. 29, 1946, in Pierz. Following their marriage, they moved to
Marshall-town before making their home in Mason City. Following her
husband's death in 2001, Alma lived with her sons until moving to the
Benedictine Health Center of Innsbruck in 2009.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers: Felix,
Raymond, Urban, Herman, Benedict, and Arnold and sisters: Irene Britz,
Barbara Short, Adeline Przybilla and Theresia Sanders.
Those left to cherish her memory include two sons Don (Jan) Littlefield,
Spring Lake Park, Minn., and David (Cherie) Littlefield, Lakeville,
Minn.; five grandsons: Brett (Jill), Travis (Mandy), Jeremy, Brandon,
and Dillon Littlefield along with six great-grandchildren: Tate, Clare,
Reese, Payton, Avery and Macey. Also survived by brothers: Edmund and
Leonard (Diane) Poser, both of Pierz, Minn. and many nieces and nephews.
Alma loved and served her Lord and Savior. Her greatest delight was her
family and she was a homemaker extraordinaire. She was an excellent cook
and baker. No one ever left Alma's table hungry. Special thanks to Drs.

and loving compassion.

died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011 at the DuPage Convalescent Center in

She was born Dec. 20, 1928 in Garner, Iowa.
Lucille was a missionary in Bolivia for over 50 years with New Tribes
Mission. She was a teacher, secretary and bookkeeper. She was famous for
her hospitality. She was a loved wife and mother.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; her sons, Steve (Mary), Dan
(Pam), Rick (Brenda) and Jon (Kay); her daughters, Cheralyn (Mike) and
Connie; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

TULSA, Okla. - Mike Yankovich passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at
his home in Tulsa at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 11 days.
He was born April 14, 1945, in Mason City, Iowa, to Mike and Elinor
Yankey.
Raised in Iowa, Mike received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Humanities
from Iowa State University. He has been a Tulsa resident since the early
1970s. Mike was a Marketing Executive for Fintube Steel Company. He
married Becky (Hayes) on Jan. 2, 1998, in Tulsa.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Yankovich of the home; six children,
Karen Peach, Amanda Djukic, Andrea Yankovich, Natalie Davis, Cheyenne
Freelove and Catlaena Freelove; three grandchildren; two brothers, Jon
Yankey and Pete Yankovich; and four sisters, Susan Eriksen, Rita

Cleo Elizabeth Hurd was born April 8, 1919, in Superior, Wis., the
daughter of Chester and Lula (Miller) Hurd. She attended Central High
School in Superior and graduated in 1936. She was a member of the
Superior Figure Skating Club and performed solos as an amateur in ice
shows in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.
Cleo attended college at La Crosse State Teachers College, now
University of Wisconsin at La Crosse; and graduated with a Bachelors of
Science degree. She taught girls physical education at Monroe Junior
High in Mason City from Nov. 12, 1940, until January 1948. She also
taught in Clear Lake, 1957-1958.
Cleo was united in marriage to Walter Cookman on June 14, 1947, in the
Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, Wis. She assisted her husband in
their dry cleaning business, Lustre Cleaners, and in their Mobile Pillow
Cleaning Service.
Cleo's hobbies included swimming, playing tennis, gardening, sewing and
playing cards. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a
former member of Beta Sigma Phi. She volunteered at the Village Store in
Clear Lake and loved her work.
Cleo was a loving mother and is survived by her four daughters: Janaan
(Ed) McGinness, Iowa City, Cherie (Ken) Ferguson, Spirit Lake, Luann
Mehan, Milford, and Maureen (Ken) Butcher, Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; 19
great grandchildren; along with many nephews, other relatives and
friends.
Cleo is preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.
The family would like to thank the staff of Oakwood Care Center and
Hospice of North Iowa for taking such wonderful care of Cleo.

MARION
- Brooke Anne Ewing-Young, 30, of Marion and formerly of Mason City,
died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, in Des Moines.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with
the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore
Colonial Chapel from 5-7 p.m.
Cremation will take place following the visitation on Tuesday evening.
Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Brooke's name.
Brooke Anne Ewing was born on March 26, 1981, in Mason City, the
daughter of Kenton Ewing and Marilyn (Boehnke) Tecklenburg.
She was a kind soul who made friends easily wherever she went. Over the
years Brooke touched the lives of many. She adored her children and
loved being with them; they were her pride and joy. Brooke will be
greatly missed by many friends and family members.
Those grateful in sharing in her life are her children, Marissa, Olivia,
Tanner, Deforest and Shawn; her mother, Marilyn (Jeff) Tecklenburg,
Marion; her siblings, April (Dale) Schmitz, Clear Lake, Staci Lloyd,
Cresco, Jennifer Tecklenburg, Dallas, Texas, Emily (Darin) DeRenzis,
Hermosa Beach, Calif., Matt (Mandy) Tecklenburg, Dallas, Texas, and Evan
Tecklenburg, Cedar Falls; her aunts, Annette Marshall, Mason City, Molly
Walgren, Cedar Falls, Kathy (Craig) Wentworth, Omaha; her uncles, Jim
(Renee) Boehnke, Tom (Pam) Tecklenburg, Humboldt, Burt (Polly)
Tecklenburg, Marshalltown, Joe (Shary) Tecklenburg, Dysart, Gary Ewing,
Mason City, Kim Pinneke, Marion, Mick Pinneke, Atlanta; her

Donald F. "Don" Gansen
CLEAR
LAKE - Donald F. "Don" Gansen, 82, 704 S. 12th St., Clear Lake. Our
beloved Husband, Father, Grand-Father, and Great- Grand-Father Donald
Francis Gansen entered his heavenly home on Dec. 17, 2011, at the Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday Dec. 22, at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kenneth
B. Gehling officiating.
Visitation will be held at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth
St., Clear Lake from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, and one hour prior to
the service at the church.
A Celebration of his life with a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at
7 p.m. Wednesday.
Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Memorials may
be given to the Don Gansen Memorial Fund.
Don was born July 13, 1929, in Elma, to William and Loretta (Richardson)
Gansen. He helped on the family farm and with the family's Sand & Gravel
Business. On Feb. 20, 1950, Don married the love of his life, Doris
Kurtz, in Chester, and together they raised six children.
Don worked in the mines on Gilmore City before moving to Clear Lake in
1961. He then worked with Carlson Construction working on many local
highways and interstates.
Don worked for Clear Lake (Buttertop) Bakery as a mechanic until he
retired.
Don enjoyed spending time with his family. He liked staying busy with
gardening, woodworking, watching sports, and having coffee with friends.
A long-time Clear Lake resident, Don was a member of the Noon Lions Club
and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Don and Doris also enjoyed spending
their winters at their home in Arkansas, taking in shows, enjoying the
flowers, and watching the wildlife around the yard.
Don was a good man and we will forever hold him in our hearts.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his infant brother, his
brother-in-law, Robert Bronner, his daughter-in-law, Connie Gansen, and
his granddaughter, Nichol Gansen.
Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 61 years, Doris,
Clear Lake, his children Fran Gansen of Mason City, David (Kathy) Gansen
of Cedar Rapids, Richard Gansen of Clear Lake, Brenda Tuttle of Mason
City, Ken (Elaine) Gansen of Jewell, and Kathy (Steve) Brown of Clear
Lake. He leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, one
godchild Danial O'Brien, Elma; along with many nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends.

Mary Dawn Lovstad was born on Sept. 3, 1949, in Williston, N.D. She was
the daughter of Jake and Patty (Fishbeck) Hoffarth. She graduated from
St. Ansgar High School. Dawn was an executive secretary for many years.
She last worked at the Ellman Companies in Phoenix, Ariz. When she
retired, she moved back to Iowa and opened Jake's Place Bar and Grill in
Plymouth with four partners in 2006.
Dawn was united in marriage to Eric Lovstad in 1974 and of this union,
two children were born: Matthew and Warren.
Dawn enjoyed reading and working at Jake's. She also spent much of her
time with family and friends. Dawn will be most remembered for the help
and good advice she gave to others.
She is survived by her two sons, Matthew Lovstad, Phoenix, Ariz. and
Warren Lovstad, Grafton; brother, Ranny (Carol Schlader) Hoffarth,
Grafton; sisters, Edie (Mike) Prazak, Grafton; Darcee (Tom) Johanns,
Mason City; Joany (Tom) Holmes, Grafton; aunts, Marilyn Fishbeck,
Plentywood, Mont., Eva Brown, Plentywood, Mont., Louie Hoffarth, Great
Falls, Mont.; nephews, Jake Prazak, Rock Falls and Josh Larson, Clear
Lake; nieces, Hollie Hoffarth, Clear Lake, Summer Rose, Missouri, Kelly
Neuberger, Clear Lake; Cassie Munoz, Mason City; Jordan Johanns, Mason
City; good friends, Dixie Brown, Mason City, Patricia Troyer, Mason
City, and Cindy Leichtnam, Mason City, and David Graham, Phoenix, Ariz.,
along with many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Gib Hoffarth
(2007).

Richard D. (Toofer) Luthe
LANSING,
Minn. -Richard D. (Toofer) Luthe, 66, of Lansing, Minn., died on
Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011 at his home in Lansing.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Amy Teske officiating.
Friends may greet the family for one hour before the service on
Wednesday.
Richard was born Aug. 20, 1945, in Austin, Minn., the son of Albert and
Beulah (Quam) Luthe. He graduated from Austin High School in 1963 and
served in the U.S. Navy. Following his service in the Navy, he attended
North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.
Richard was married to Delaine Reynolds on Oct. 10, 1966, in Austin.
They resided in Manly, where he worked as a switchman for the Union
Pacific Railroad. In 2001, they moved to Lansing, Minn.
Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents, father Albert, a
sister and a brother.
He is survived by his wife, Delaine Luthe, Lansing, Minn.; daughter and
son-in-law: The Reverend Amelia Houdek and husband Chris of Andover,
Minn.; son and daughter-in-law: Eric and Jennifer Luthe, Lewisville,
Texas; grandchildren: Tyler Luthe, Nicholas Luthe, Rebecca Luthe, Xander
Houdek and Noah Houdek; mother: Beulah Luthe, Austin, Minn.; brother and
sister-in-law: Robb and Rita Luthe, Brownsdale, Minn.; sisters and
brothers-in-law: Kathy and Harold Paine, Lansing, Minn., Patty and Cliff

James Patrick "Sam" Martin
NORTHWOOD
- James Patrick "Sam" Martin, 76, Northwood, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011,
at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
A memorial and celebration of life service for Sam will be held at 1
p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave.
South, Northwood, with Pastor Wendi Gillan of the United Methodist
Church in Northwood, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart
Catholic Cemetery in Manly with military graveside honors conducted by
members of the Edward-Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at
the chapel.
James Patrick Martin was born on March 29, 1935, in Manly, the son of
James S. and Kathryn (Ryan) Martin. Sam graduated from Manly High
School, and also attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul,
Minn. He was inducted into the Army on Nov. 17, 1954, and served his
country honorably and faithfully, serving most of his time in Germany
until his honorable discharge on Oct. 24, 1956.
He was united in marriage to Carole Schaffer on Aug. 1, 1959, and to
this union three children were born.
He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn "Gwen" Johnson on Nov. 15, 1975,
in Dallas, Texas. She preceded him in death on Sept. 10, 2008.
Sam worked most of his career in the sales field until his retirement in
2002. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and always had a joke to share with
his family and friends. Sam moved to the Veterans home in Marshalltown
in 2009, to be closer to his daughter Kathleen and his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Kathleen (Tom)
Brandhorst of Dysart, and Steve (Stephanie) Martin of Katy, Texas; three
grandchildren, Thomas J. Brandhorst of Iowa City, Mitchell Brandhorst of
Dysart, and Chad Clayton of Katy, Texas; his brother, Dennis Martin of
Colorado; as well as many other extended family members and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; son, Tony Martin; wife,
Gwendolyn; brothers, David and Billy Martin; and a sister Corrine Kerr.

Clyde Schotanus
ST. ANSGAR - Clyde Schotanus, 91, of St. Ansgar died on Saturday,
Dec. 17, 2011, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center. Private family
service will be held at a later date.
Clyde was born on Feb. 25, 1920, to Jacob and Sietske (Steenstra)
Schotanus in Deinum, Holland. He married Marion, and to this union four
children were born. Clyde later married Louise after the death of
Marion. He farmed his entire life. Clyde was a musician, playing in
various bands for over 60 years as an accordianist and organist. He
enjoyed auctions and the buying and selling of items.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; son Dwight;
brother, Gerald; sister, Laura Helm.
He is survived by one son, David of Plymouth; two daughters, Connie
Owens of Simi Valley, Calif. and Mickey Shuler of Rudd; eight
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack Schotanus,
Osage.
