LaVerna Frank

BRITT - LaVerna Frank, 92, of Britt, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for LaVerna Frank will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at United Methodist Church, 707 Fourth Street Southwest in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W., in Britt.

LaVerna was born to George and Gertrude (Welch) Peterson, on May 17, 1919, in Vincent. She graduated from Eagle Grove High School.

LaVerna was united in marriage with Martin Frank on Feb. 12, 1939, at her parents' home in Renwick. The couple made their home on a farm near Eagle Grove before moving to Wesley in 1948. In 1970, she moved to Britt. LaVerna's was employed as a housekeeper at Hancock County Memorial Hospital. LaVerna enjoyed traveling, flowers, playing bingo and crafts.

LaVerna is survived by her children: Jerry (Agnes) Frank of Algona, Gail Frank (special friend, Heidi) of Hotchkiss, Colo., Loren (Shari) Frank of Woden and Doyle Frank of Mancos, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and brother, Donald Peterson of South Dakota.

LaVerna was preceded in death by parents; husband, Martin 1967; sons, Carl Frank in 2011 and Raymond Frank in 1990; grandson, Shane Frank in 2003; one brother and three sisters.

The family of LaVerna Frank would like to thank Westview Care Center for the care and understanding they provided for LaVerna for the last six years.

LAKE MILLS -Annabelle Gallagher, 93 of Lake Mills, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at Mercy Hospice in Hiawatha.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating.

Paul E. Isaacson

MASON CITY - Paul E. Isaacson, 68, of Mason City, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at his home in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 7, at the Lunder Lutheran Church, 14982 735th Ave, Albert Lea, Minn., with the Rev. Richard Spande officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Lunder Lutheran Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Paul's name in care of his family.

Paul Elnore Isaacson was born on April 11, 1943, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Glenn and Harriet (Rasmussen) Isaacson; he was one of seven children. Paul was baptized in the Emmons Lutheran Church and was later confirmed in the Lunder Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed helping others and was always available to assist his elderly neighbors if they were in need. He always cared for and was especially thoughtful of his family.

Paul also enjoyed the outdoors, reading, and cheering on the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his son, Jason (Beth) Isaacson, and their children, Shalin, William, Addie, and Abraham; and his daughter, Angie (Dale) Cheney, and their daughters, Desireé and Emerald; one brother, Ray (Thelma) Isaacson; four sisters, Jean (Orlo) Willmert, Joan (Larry) Beck, Harriet (Denis) Seaton, and Vonnie Dahl; and many nieces and nephews.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Judy Underwood and a brother in law, Robert Dahl.

Carmen Louise Loux

RENWICK - Carmen Louise Loux was born May, 25, 1919, in her parents' home near Renwick, the daughter of James Irwin and Lora Christine (Tanck) Peer.

She was raised and educated near Renwick, graduating from the Renwick Public School in 1937. She then attended Iowa State College in Ames, where she received her teaching certificate with a major in child development in 1941.

While at Iowa State she was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, which was a musical group. She taught high school in Allison and Greene. During World War II, she moved to Portland, Ore., and taught nursery school to help with the war effort. She then returned to Iowa to teach at the Vernon Public School.

On Sept. 3, 1950, Carmen was united in marriage to Charles "Cobb" George Loux at her home in Renwick. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove.

Carmen was a devoted wife and mother and chose to work at home following her marriage. She was very dedicated to her work in the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove and taught Sunday school, Bible school and led Bible studies for many years.

She had a fascination for nature and Carmen always enjoyed reading, music, camping, fishing and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed watching sports, especially those events her grandchildren were in. She had a special appreciation for birds, butterflies and lighthouses. Her love of family was only surpassed by her love for the Lord. She was a member of the Equality Club, Esther Circle and Beta Sigma Phi.

In 2001, Carmen moved to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon, and later to the Sanford Senior Care Center, also in Sheldon, where she passed away on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. She was 92.

Survivors include three children: Janet Sneiderman and husband Darrell of Sheldon; Dr. James Loux and wife Deborah of Clear Lake; Steven Loux and wife Marcia of Thor; seven grandchildren: Jona Fitzsimmons and husband John; Dr. Kirk Sneiderman and wife Kim; Emily Hanson and husband Luke; Tony Sneiderman; Laura, Sarah and Megan Loux and one great-grandchild, Kade Sneiderman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles on June 9, 1993; two brothers, Norman and Corwin Peer and three sisters-in-law, Irene and LaVonne Peer and Helen Loux.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with the Rev. Mike Agnew officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield.

 Richard William Klunder

GREENE - Funeral Mass for Richard William Klunder, 70, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., today, Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, with a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Richard William Klunder was born on July 25, 1941, a son of Alvin and Dorothy (Steere) Klunder and entered into eternal rest on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at his residence in Greene.

Richard was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene where he served as an usher.

He received his education in the Greene Public Schools, graduating from Greene High School in 1959. As a young man he worked for Oliver Tractor/White Farms, for Massey-Ferguson Corporation and farmed. He was employed by the Nestle Corporation in Waverly, where he worked for 31 years before his retirement in 2000.

He was united in marriage to Rose Merfeld on June 2, 1962, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Roseville. This union was blessed with five children.

Richard enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino, cooking, grilling and baking for his family. He took the entire family on a houseboat to the Boundary Waters for a memorable family vacation. He was an extremely hard worker, a kind-hearted soul, and a great Dad. Most of all, Richard enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Rose, five children: Kelly (Rafael) Morales of Dike, Brook (Kristine) Klunder of Cedar Falls, Cameron Klunder (special friend, Nancy) Leesburg, Ga., Darin (Shelley) Klunder of Greene, Kara (Jim) Trotter of Springfield, Ill.; 13 grandchildren: Ashley and Kelsey Morales, Noah, Owen, Sara, and Vada Klunder, Brandon Klunder, Cody and Brayden Kunder, Colton Card, Jake, Dora, and Lucy Trotter; two sisters: Judy (Rich) Laube of Charles City, Patricia Meek of Ackley; one brother: Jim (Joyce) Klunder of Ventura; Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, one brother-in-law, Jim Meek.

Ardis L. Opheim

MASON CITY - Ardis L. Opheim, 90 of Mason City, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in the Bode Cemetery, Bode, Iowa at 2:30 p.m.

Ardis was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Armstrong, the daughter of Peter and Clara (Ellingson) Movick. She grew up in Ottosen, Iowa, graduating from Ottosen High School.

Ardis married Merle V. Opheim Sr. on August 8, 1944. She moved to Mason City in 1965. Ardis worked as a supervisor for North Iowa Vocational Center (NIVC) for 17 years. She enjoyed working with the special people at the center. She retired in 1986. Ardis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Some of her interests included crafts, bowling, and traveling to see her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Good Shepherd Health Center for the attention and care Ardis received.

Ronald "Ron" Spilman

TUCSON, Ariz. -Ronald "Ron" Spilman, 60, passed away at his home on Thursday, Dec. 1.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Pastor Mark Dobel officiating.

Visitation with family will begin at 1 p.m.

The family requests that memorials be made out to the Ronald Spilman Memorial Fund or to the Humane Society of North Iowa.

Ron was born Aug. 10, 1951, in Thornton, to Daniel and Phyllis (Brower) Spilman. He graduated as valedictorian from Meservey-Thornton High School in 1969. After high school he went to North Iowa Area Community College and was in the top 20 of his class.

He worked with Alice Blackmore at the Humane Society from the beginning and for about 20 years. He also worked at Blackmore Nursery for many years.

Enjoying travel, he ended up going to Idaho and Colorado for a while, before ending up in Arizona and owning his own business.

A prankster with many hobbies, he had a talent for picking up languages, learning German in school, teaching himself Spanish and even picking up a little Navajo over the years. He enjoyed motorcycles, riding his Harley up here in the summers to visit. He got his pilot's license and even got the opportunity to fly a jet. He loved popcorn and would eat it for several meals a week.

Ron is survived by his father, Daniel Spilman, his brother Randy Spilman, his sister, Kathy Spilman, all from Clear Lake. He is also survived by a nephew, Dustin Spilman, nieces Katie Bertram (Jason), Ashley Spilman, and Shelby Andersen (Jim); his best friend Helen Leslie, his many friends, and his beloved pets.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Paul Johnson

THOMPSON - Paul Johnson, 76, of Thompson died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Boyd Longshore officiating. Burial will be held at West Prairie Cemetery in Thompson.

Paul Ivan Johnson was born on March 23, 1935, in Forest City to Tommy and Josie (Osheim) Johnson and was one of five children. Paul was baptized and confirmed at West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Thompson. He graduated from Thompson High School in 1952. Paul was currently a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson, where he served as president of the congregation.

He was united in marriage to Bonnie Mau on July 27, 1957, and to this union three children were born. Paul farmed and lived on an acreage south of Thompson all of his life. He enjoyed baseball and watching sports, planting trees and establishing wetlands for the wildlife.

Paul is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughters, Sandy (Chuck) Fandel, Estherville, and Lisa (Don) Mathahs, Thompson; son Tom (Kathy) Johnson, Humboldt; six grandchildren - Craig Fandel, Keith Fandel, Laura Fandel, Rebecca Johnson, Kelli Johnson, Lindsey Johnson; sister, Ruth McKee, Garner; brother-in-law, Bill Stille, Texas; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Johnson, Lake Mills, and Audrey Stille, Salisbury, Maryland; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Gladys M. Northrup

MASON CITY - Gladys M. Northrup, 105, of 304 Third St. N.E., Mason City, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Gladys Mae was born on Feb. 9, 1906, the daughter of Charlie and Grace "Mendenhall" Fogelsong at Stuart, Iowa. She attended school in Stuart and moved to Mason City in 1925. She was united in marriage to Henry Matz on Jan. 21, 1925, at Guthrie Center, Iowa.

After his death in 1943 she married Noah Holt in 1945; he died in 1975.

On Feb. 21, 1987, she was married to Nate Northrup in Mason City.

Gladys loved music and played organ right up to shortly before her death.

She was engaged as a machine operator at Holsum Bakery from 1943 until 1945, and then in the 1950s and '60s as a clerk at Woolworths. She was a faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church, the Senior Citizens, Eagles Auxiliary and the Rebecca Lodge.

Her favorite pastime was traveling around the United States and she was very adventuresome and would hop a bus just to travel and visit relatives. She enjoyed "cutting a rug" (square dancing), and loved playing board games, fishing and was interested in everything, not liking to sit still and remarking that her interests kept her young.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Betty J. Koecher, Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.

Along with other nieces and nephews are included Ron and Sheila Callow, Clear Lake, and Ray and Gloria Callow, Mason City.

Gladys's son, Claude H. Matz; her husbands; three sisters, Leata Grandbouche, Pearl May and Florence Fogelsong; and five brothers, Harold, Arthur, Cecil, Darwin and Paul Fogelsong, preceded her in death.

Kenneth Wayne Pickett was born on Nov. 18, 1933, in Burlington, Colo., a son of Calvin and Julia (Stimpson) Pickett, and died on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. He received his education in the country schools of Nebraska.

Kenneth is a veteran who served in the United States
Army during the Korean War from 1952-1955.

Kenneth worked for the railroad, did construction, the creamery in Greene, and finally for Terex Craines in Waverly where he remained for 14 years before retiring in 1997.

He was a member of the Straud-Gates American Legion Post 387 of Marble Rock.

Kenneth was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino, fishing, gardening, and watching country music and old movies on TV.
Kenneth is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane of Marble Rock; one son: Dan (Tamara) Pickett of Waverly; three grandchildren: Miranda, Breanna, and Kayla Pickett; one sister: Waunita Mahew of Carney, NE; one brother: Earl (Yavonne) Pickett of Spokane, WA; many brothers and sisters -in-law; many nieces and nephews; a faithful canine companion, Saddie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Donald A. Sellers

HANLONTOWN - Donald A. Sellers, 92, died Monday, December 5, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday Dec. 8, at the Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown, with Pastor Linda Johnson-Prestholt officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Brush Point Cemetery.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday.

Donald A. Sellers was born Oct. 4, 1919, the son of Everette and Cora Mae (Sims) Sellers. Donald attended country school in Russell. Donald was united in marriage to Marian Utt on June 30, 1943, Goodell. To this union they were blessed with three children. They lived in the Goodell and Meservey area until they moved to Hanlontown in December of 1956.

During Donald's life he held a variety of jobs from chef in Kansas City while growing up to auto mechanics, which included owning a full-service gas station in Goodell. He farmed the homestead in Hanlontown while working at the soybean plant in Mason City, where he worked until his retirement.

After retirement he spent time on his farm and enjoyed tinkering with old machinery and vehicles. He enjoyed going to morning coffee at the Fertile Café, socializing with his friends and getting caught up on the local news. He was a kind man who would give you the shirt off his back. He helped people whenever needed, taking them to appointments or to get groceries. He was a thinker who did a lot of tinkering from which he designed and built trap setters, a log splitter and hoist to meet his needs. He also used the log splitter to run a business of cutting and delivering wood to customers. His imagination could have easily made him a writer for the "Red Green Show!"

Donald is survived by his children, Patricia Lou (Ken) Weber, Manly, and William (Shelly) Sellers, Clear Lake; daughter-in- law, Kathryn Sellers, Klemme; grandchildren, Debra (Travis) Bell, Deanna (Mike) Branstad, Heath Weber, Angel (Jeremy) Hardgrove, Susanne (Sean) Morgan, Sam Weber, Dennis Sellers, Stacy (Travis) Burke, Sadie Sellers, Meghan Block, Ryan Block and Nathan Wallaker; numerous great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl (Joan) Sellers, Jamestown, N.Y.; one sister, Mary Nolte, Russell, Iowa; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents, wife Marian, son Donald, step-mother Gladys, brothers Herbert, Virgil, Burdette and Robert, and special friend Clara Bier.

Frieda Udelhofen

MASON CITY - Frieda Udelhofen, 96, Mason City, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City, surrounded by her family.

A service of celebration of life will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware, Mason City, with Pastor Mark Lavrenz officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 - 3rd St. NE, Mason City, and one hour before the church service Thursday.

Frieda was born April 12, 1915, in Maywood, Ill., the daughter of Christian and Katherine (Groh) Heimbuch. As a youngster, the family moved to North Dakota, then relocated to a farm in Mason City, IA the Fall of 1924. Frieda resided in Mason City the remainder of her life.

While attending Lincoln Number 9 Country School northwest of Mason City, Frieda worked to help support her family. She married Charles W. Udelhofen, Sept. 22, 1934. From this union, two children were born: Robert and Edward.

Frieda was a life-long and charter-member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, active in the Sarah Circle. She loved her large family playing numerous card games with her grandchildren and cultivating many friendships. She actively participated in the Cornelia Cannon Intercreek Club, a neighborhood ladies reading / study group; and looked forward to her monthly 500 card club.

Known as an excellent cook and baker providing pies for the church bake sale and delicious duck dinners for her family, she was better known as The Cake Lady making hundreds of chocolate angel food cakes with burnt-sugar frosting for family and special orders, and monthly for thirty years for the Mason City Noon Rotary.

Ronald was born June 26, 1949, to Bobby and Romona (Cunningham) Warner in Mason City. He lived in Mason City until moving with his family to North Dakota in 1961.

Later, his parents moved to the Twin Cities and he graduated in 1967 from Highland Park High School, St. Paul, Minn. Then he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After being discharged he re-enlisted in the military service where he became disabled and was a patient at the VA Hospital at Knoxville, Iowa, for many years. Later he moved to Arkansas to be nearer his family.

Ron was the first born in a family of five children. Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Dahm, Inver Grove, Minn., and Diana Qualls of Harrison, Ark.; one brother, Roger Warner, Duncan Heights, Garner; an uncle, John Cunningham; and a niece and several nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Romona 1983 and Bobby 1988; a sister, Deborah Underdown, 2009; and brother-in-law, David Underdown, 2011.

CLEAR LAKE - LeRoy A. Ziesmer, 82, 2602 North Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at Apache Junction, Ariz.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave S., Clear Lake, IA, with Rev. John R. Tilp officiating.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 9, from 4-7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 West, Mason City, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Leroy A. Ziesmer Memorial Fund.

LeRoy Aaron was born July 22, 1929, on their family farm in Ventura, the son of Henry Carl and Mathilda (Bahr) Ziesmer. Leroy was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1945.

His "first" job was selling pickles for Presley Griggs. He worked for Bierman Grocery Store and Field Grocery Store, both in Ventura. He also worked on the family farm. LeRoy married Kathleen Fay "Pat" Parker April 16, 1950 in Mason City. They lived on a farm west of Ventura where he farmed and then he managed the Farmers Co-op, retiring in 1995.

LeRoy loved family get-togethers and vacations with the grandchildren including fishing trips, camping trips, cruises and Sunday drives. He enjoyed trading show pigeons. Retirement allowed them to spend many winters in Arizona.

He was a member of the Ventura School Board, Community State Bank Board, Clear Lake Sanitary District Board, Ventura Cemetery Board and was a former Ventura Fire Department volunteer. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Pat Ziesmer, Clear Lake; five children, Jody (Michael) O'Donnell, Pocatello, Idaho, Jane (Douglas) Beach, Kansas City, Mo., David (Becky) Ziesmer, rural Garner, Jana Niemeyer and her fiancé Jim Kern, Blue Springs, Mo., and Andrew (Jean) Ziesmer; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Smith, Aaron Hollingshead, Austin (Jamie) Hollingshead, Alison Ziesmer, Derek Ziesmer, Ian Niemeyer, Parker Niemeyer, Pierce Niemeyer, Zachary Ziesmer, Amanda Ziesmer, and Olivia Ziesmer; three great-grandchildren, Jackson, Iva and Matilda Smith; brother-in-law, David (Bonnie) Parker, and sister-in-law, Marcia Boyd; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sandra Mae Boeckholt

TOPEKA, Kan. - Sandra Mae Boeckholt, 71, of Topeka passed away on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011.

She was born Jan. 1, 1940, at Blue Earth, Minn., the daughter of Melvin and Pearl Twait Fjetland. She was raised in Iowa and graduated from high school at Forest City, Iowa. She attended and graduated from nursing school in Mason City, Iowa.

Sandra married Robert Boeckholt in 1960 at Leland, Iowa. They moved to Topeka in 1982. In Topeka, Sandra was a registered nurse, working first at St. Francis Hospital and later the VA Medical Center. She retired from the VA in 1999.

Survivors include her husband, Robert, of the home; daughter, Brenda Sleep of Topeka; mother, Pearl Fjetland of Forest City, Iowa; and three grandchildren, Douglas, Andrew and Cody.

She was preceded in death by her dad and a son, Brent, who passed away in 1981.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service was held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center, Iowa, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8.

Vivian was born March 7, 1922, in rural Burr Oak, the daughter of Hugh J. and Verlie M. (Pierce) Kelly. In 1940, she graduated from St. Joseph's High School, where she played on the Joettes Basketball Team. In 1940, the Joettes played in the state tournament.

Vivian married Howard K. Bell on July 3, 1944, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. In addition to being a homemaker, Vivian worked at Mercy Hospital as a nurse's aide for 20 years before retiring in 1984. She enjoyed spending time with her family - especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to Irish music, gambling, car rides, being outdoors, and watching TV - especially Judge Judy, the news and college basketball (March Madness). Vivian was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children: Michael Bell and wife, Gloria, of Great Falls, Mont., Cheri Abel and husband, Denny, of Burlington, Iowa, Steven Bell and wife, Michelle, of Rockwell, Vickie Hentges and husband, Jim, of Mason City, Julie Smith and husband, Dusty, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and Kathy Foster and special friend, Mitch Olson, of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by two brothers: Larry Kelly and wife, Jan, of Mason City, and Vere Kelly and wife, Rose, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1986, her parents, four brothers: Leland, Robert, Parnell and Hugh Allen Kelly; and two sisters: Virginia Kelly in infancy, and Dorothy Sprinkle.

Mark L. Schwem

GARNER - Mark L. Schwem, 56, of Garner, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Mark Loraine Schwem, the son of Loraine and Elnora (Neimeyer) Schwem, was born Oct. 16, 1955, in Sumner. He was raised on a farm north of Tripoli and attended school at Tripoli.

As a young man he worked for farmers in the area baling hay. Mark also worked for Stubmeyer's at the sawmill and Jack Snyder's sale barn.

On Dec. 4, 1976, he married Nancy Green of Cedar Falls. Together they had three children. They lived in Sheffield where he worked for Eno Farms. Mark was a hard worker and a wonderful provider. In 1986, they moved to Wisconsin to milk cows with his brother, Steven. They later returned to Sheffield, working for Eno Farms and the Sheffield elevator. Mark and Nancy later divorced.

In 1993, Mark was reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Connie Bauer of Garner. They made their home northwest of Ventura. Mark was employed at Curries in Mason City until April of 2011 when health issues caused him to retire. Mark also hobby-farmed, raising cows, turkeys, chickens, geese and cats. He enjoyed cat fishing, hunting, trapping, Westerns, music from the hippy era and his coon hounds, chocolate and babies.

Mark is survived by the love of his life, Connie Bauer of Garner; a litter of children, Jill Schwem (Kevin Becker) of Garner, Kelly Schwem of Forest City, Brian Schwem of Cedar Falls, Tom Smith (Crystal Pischel) of Mason City, Amy Ulven (Clint Gouge) of Garner and Jake Wolf of Algona; a flock of grandchildren, Alex, Angelle, Lakell, Keyaira, Xander, Morgan, Chase, Mattilynn, Zoey, Lucca, Cierra, Amanda and one on the way; brothers, Romaine Schwem of Waterloo, Jerry (Lucy) Schwem of Gays Mills, Wis., and Steven Schwem of Viroqua, Wis.; sisters, Merna Costa of Waterloo and Marlene (Steve) Knapp of West Gate; mother-in-law, Lois Bauer of Garner; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Julie Pigman of Crystal Lake, Hal (Cindy) Bauer of Kanawha, Janelle Smith (Lee White) of Garner, Dallas Bauer of Garner, Dean Bauer of Forest City and Mark Bauer of Garner; his former wife, Nancy Schwem of Mason City; former mother-in-law, Marilyn Green of Janesville; former brother-in-law, Mike (Jackie) Green of Cedar Falls; and a herd of nieces and nephews.

Vivian A. Witham

AUSTIN, Minn. - Vivian A. Witham, 105, of Austin, Minn., died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at St. Marks Lutheran Home in Austin, Minn.

Vivian Anita Ausen was born Jan. 15, 1906, at Odin, Minn., the daughter of Gilbert and Margaret (Arneson) Ausen. She graduated from the Lake Mills High School and attended Normal School. She taught in country schools near Decorah and Lake Mills.

Vivian was married to Howard Witham in October of 1929 at the St. Olaf Lutheran parsonage in Austin, Minn. The Withams lived in Lake Mills, Blue Earth and Fairmont, Minn. After her husband's death Vivian moved to Austin, Minn.
Vivian has been a longtime resident of the Twin Towers and The Cedars of Austin. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and a former member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.

Vivian was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling; she was also an excellent cook and gardener and enjoyed sharing the efforts of her work and stories of her gardening. She also liked to sew and do embroidery.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, son William, grandson Jon Berg, granddaughter Audrey Witham, great-grandson Zachary Witham, two brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her children, Norma Berg, Houston, Texas, Stan and Shirley Witham, Osage, Audrey and Jack Hastings, Austin, Minn., daughter-in-law, Pat Witham, Ephrata, Wash., 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Jacobson, Albert Lea, Minn.; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Austin with the Reverend Karen Behling officiating.

Interment will be in the Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from noon until the time of the service.

The Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family prefers memorials to Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
