Germaine Blake

STACYVILLE - Germaine Blake, 79, of Stacyville died November 28, 2011, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with Father Jack McClure, CPPS, officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 4 p.m. with Scripture service at 7 p.m.
Germaine died on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. She was born Oct. 14, 1932, on a farm outside of Stacyville, the youngest child of Albert and Pauline Mayer. She attended Visitation Grade School and High School and then moved to Cedar Falls for two years, where she obtained a teaching certificate at the Iowa State Teachers College.

She first taught at Sacred Heart School in Meyer for three years before "retiring" to get married.

On June 10, 1954, Germaine married her high school sweetheart, Willie. She raised three children, Debra, Diane and Mark, until 1964 when Visitation Grade School called her to teach fifth grade. She later moved to the lower grades, teaching second and third for the remainder of her career.

While teaching, she returned to college taking night classes and attending summer school to obtain her bachelor's degree at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

During her tenure at Visitation, she also became the First Communion teacher, preparing hundreds of children to receive the Eucharist. She retired in 1997 after 33 years of teaching at Visitation School.

After retirement, Germaine continued to tutor individual children until one week prior to her death. In 1999, she received the Distinguished Graduate Award from the Department of Elementary Schools of the National Catholic Education Association. In 2000, she was named to "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" for excellence as an educator.

Germaine's interests and abilities ranged widely. Early in her marriage, she sewed many outfits for herself and her children, taking after her mother, Pauline, a seamstress. Her garden was always an important part of her life. Initially, she grew and canned vegetables, and after retirement she tended a colorful array of flowers. She was especially known for baking tasty pies, bars, cookies and coffee cake. She also loved reading, solving crossword puzzles and traveling. She was able to achieve one of her lifetime goals by visiting the Vatican and obtaining an audience with the Pope. In recent years, she traveled to England, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and other places to visit family.

In retirement, she bowled, played bridge and volunteered extensively. She was active in the Stacyville Nursing Home Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as Education Chairman for many years. She also served on the auxiliary for the Mitchell County Regional Health Center and volunteered in the hospital gift shop. She delivered Meals on Wheels to hometown residents and served as a Eucharistic Minister for Visitation Church, presenting communion at Mass and taking communion to elderly community members and nursing home residents. She was a member of the Cedar Valley Chapter of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association.

Germaine is survived by her husband, Willard Blake; two daughters, Debra Blake of Minneapolis, Minn., and Diane (Ron) Peterson of Lakeville, Minn.; one son, Mark Blake of Polk City; two grandchildren, Erick and Adam Peterson; one brother, Edwin (Estelle) Mayer of Bella Vista, Ark.; and numerous nephews, nieces, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Germaine is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Pauline Mayer; brothers, Jerome Mayer and Leo Mayer; and sisters, Cecilia Meinders and Helen Cerrato.

We feel your strength, love and guidance as our Guardian Angel.

Richard W. Davis

MASON CITY - Richard W. Davis, 92, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Lay Minister James M. Fank officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 2, from 4-6:30 p.m. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City.

Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Richard W. Davis Memorial.
Richard W. Davis was born near Britt, on May 31, 1919, the son of Jay and Caroline (Larson) Davis, and stepson of Martha Davis.

As a youngster, he lived in Hayfield, Mason City, Clear Lake and Chippewa Falls, Wis. He went to school at Jefferson and Central School. He went to school and completed the 8th grade. The teacher wouldn't give him a report card because he wouldn't sign up to go to high school.

Times were tough; he went to work picking apples for $1 per day. He then worked for a cousin Ernie Reese. In 1937 he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps. While with them he helped with the building of Beads Lake at Hampton. He left there and worked for the railroad. After that he went to work mowing at East Park for the city of Mason City. He worked for the garbage department for 4½ years. He then transferred to the street department. He worked for the city of Mason City 40 years and 23 days. He took care of sewers, operating the city's first vac-all and jet machine. The only day he did not want to go was his last day. He said he wasn't sure he wanted to quit.

He loved to work. He always seemed to have another job to go to after work. He built many garages, sets of cupboards and installed many doors for others. He continued to do carpentry until well into his 80s. He put an addition on his daughter Jolene's house when he was 83. He bricked the whole addition. He only stopped when his macular degeneration and a stroke got the best of him.

He loved fishing more than food. He went to Canada almost every year for 40-plus years. He said going to Canada fishing gets in your blood; it's like gambling. He took both of his grandsons when they were age 13. James continued going with Grandpa for years. James started taking Grandpa in 1990 and continued until 2010. Even though he couldn't see well, he thought the waves on Gull Rock were really big.
Richard was in charge of the cooler. He carried it to the boat on his walker. One trip they forgot the walker in the middle of Minnesota at a gas station. They went on without it, picking it up on their return trip. He celebrated his 90th birthday in Canada. James had arranged for him to have Black Forest Cake. James lifted Grandpa into and out of his boat when they fished at Clear Lake.

Richard married Doris G. Ebbenga on Dec. 1, 1944. They met roller-skating. They also loved to go dancing. They worked side by side with most of Richard's building projects. They traveled a little after they retired. He even did carpentry while they wintered in Texas.

After Doris died, he enjoyed walking with his best friend Stan Currie. He enjoyed going for rides and anything else as long as Stan was with him.

Richard is survived by his children, Judy (Ron) Colby, Omaha, Neb., Jolene (Jim) Fank, Mason City; grandchildren, Jeff Colby, Omaha, Neb., Amy (Bryan) Reim, Yutan, Neb., James M Fank (Tonette) and Elizabeth Fank of Mason City; great granddaughters, Isla Colby and Eva Gonzalez; one brother, Kenneth (Sheryl) Davis of Onalaska, Wis., along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 64 years and son Donald; his two sisters, Alice Bohnsack and Opal Miller.
