IOWA FALLS - Velma Ruth Brown, 85, of Iowa Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services for Velma Ruth Brown will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church, 619 Main Street, Iowa Falls.

CHENEY, Kan. - Lanny Keith Grosland, of rural Cheney, Kan., and formerly of Mason City, died Oct. 9, 2010, at his home.

A memorial service for Mr. Grosland will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at the Lanterman Funeral Home in Cheney.

There will be no visitation.

Anna "Laurie" Leichtnam

MASON CITY - Anna "Laurie" Leichtnam, 82, of Mason City, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at her home.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams Ave., with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 11, 2010, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Anna L. Leichtnam Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Anna was born on Jan. 5, 1928, on the family homestead near Hawkeye, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Clara (Schmitt) Franzen. She attended St. Lucas School before earning her GED from Mason City High School in 1983.

She married Anthony Leichtnam on Oct. 21, 1947, in Chester, Iowa. Anna was a regular member of Holy Family Catholic Church, AARP, Senior Citizens, and St. Gregory Circle. She enjoyed flowers, especially her peonies, baking date cakes and cinnamon rolls for friends, and was an avid reader. She will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew her.

Anna is survived by her children, Sue (Dave) Gaebel of Cary, N.C., Shirley (Brian) Long of Missoula, Mont., Robert (Cindy) Leichtnam of Mason City, Beth (Mike) Hutchinson of Harrisville, Pa,; grandchildren, Mindy, Heather, and Matt Gaebel, Kari and Kurt Long, A.J. Leichtnam, Christie Smith, Melissa Langkamp, Michaela, Nico, Dane, Cole, Slade Hutchinson; six great-grandchildren; four sisters; and two brothers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Don Charles; three brothers, Albert, Leo and Duane Franzen.

CORWITH - Albert Louis "Skip" Fish Jr., 64, of Corwith, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Corwith with Rev. Kevin Hollinger officiating.

Marybelle F. Henderson

WEST BEND - Mary F. Henderson, 80, of West Bend, passed away Friday, October 8, 2010, at the West Bend Care Center in West Bend.

Mary Henderson, daughter of George and Windsom (Ezra) Francis, was born on May 4, 1930, in Rockwell, Iowa. She attended school at Rockwell Catholic School.

Mary was an Certified Nurse's Aid and was employed as a Home Health Aid for many years. She was a member of the Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children, Rita "Toni" Stimac and Cathy Waugh of Emmetsburg, Edward Bohnsack of Fort Dodge, and Elizabeth Nelson of Stanley, Wis.; eleven grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren; and one brother.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, one sister.

Donnie Jensen

THORNTON - Donnie Jensen, 57, of Thornton, passed away Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Retz Funeral Home, Thornton with Mr. Red Haugland presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., today, Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Retz Funeral Home, Thornton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the care of the Donnie Jensen Memorial Fund.

Donnie Lee Jensen was born on Aug. 31, 1953, in Mason City, a son of Eugene and Mildred (DeVries) Jensen. He was baptized and confirmed at Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton. He graduated from Meservey-Thornton High School in 1971.

Donnie worked at the Skelly Station in Thornton and later Schroeder's DX. For many years Donnie worked in construction, ending his career with Neff Construction due to health reasons in 2009.

He enjoyed woodworking and playing pool with his buddies at Westy's and watching old Western movies. He loved animals and his cats and dogs were his family.

Donnie is survived by his parents: Eugene and Mildred Jensen, Thornton; sisters and brother: Connie (Larry) Stadtlander, Thornton; Mike (Betty) Jensen, Thornton; Kathy (Tom) Janeka, Thornton; Laurie (Floyd) Mecham, Clear Lake; nieces and nephews: Robert (Shea) Jensen, Jamie Janeka and fiance Amanda Hull, Amber Janeka and Kelly Jensen and his friends from Westy's.

He is preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Duane Koehler
U.S. Navy Korean War

CRESCO - Duane Koehler, 78, of Cresco, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Duane was born on June 10, 1932, at Fort Dodge, to Harry and Auguste (Hayungs) Koehler. He graduated from Swaledale High School in 1952. Following graduation he entered the
United States Navy, serving his country in the Korean War. Following the service, he attended school in Des Moines to become a Journeyman Iron Worker.

Duane married Darlene Cook at Kankakee, Ill. To this union, he had four daughters. He belonged to Ironworkers Local No. 1 in Chicago, Ill., where he worked for 30 years. Duane moved his family to a farm south of Cresco, in 1975, where he lived until his death. Duane loved to fish and play cards.

He is survived by his wife Darlene, son-in-law, Don Schroeder of La Crescent, Minn., four daughters, Roxanne Hendrick of Loveland, Colo., Bonnie Schroeder of Marshalltown, Iowa, Penny (Scott) Schroeder of Richardson Texas, and Pamela Sowers of Marshalltown, Iowa, twelve grandchildren, two brothers, Frank (Joan) of Mason City, and John (Jean) of Waterford, Ohio, three sisters, Clara Sherrill of San Marcos, Texas, Karen (Gary) Peters of Clear Lake, and Mary (Alan) Eggebraaten of Forest City, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara, grandson Dylan, his parents, two brothers, Harry (Pat), and Nicholas (
Vietnam War), one sister, Rosella (Gerald) Schmidt, and a brother-in-law, Dale Sherrill.

Marjorie McGee

CRESCO - Marjorie McGee, 84, of Cresco, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery with a lunch following.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call an hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Marjorie Esther Burr was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Winneshiek County to Roy and Esther (Sheppard) Burr. As was the custom in those days, they lived on rented farms near Lime Springs and Cresco.

She attended rural country schools and then graduated from Cresco High School in 1943. She was hired as the first female employee at the Cresco State Bank.

On Feb. 6, 1947, she married her lifetime partner, Raymond James McGee. They farmed in Orleans Township most of their married life. In later years, they moved into Cresco. Marge's final years were spent at the Evans Memorial Home which she called "HOME," living with such loving and caring staff and residents.

Marge worked for 22 years at the Elwood Law firm. Upon retirement, she continued tax work from her home for many years. She was involved with numerous church and community organizations.
Marge's priorities were raising her family and in later years enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a great challenge with Scrabble and Chinese Checkers and loved putting jigsaw puzzles together. She loved the outdoors, her gardens, flowers, reading and music.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Thomas) Niess of Buffalo Center; Colleen (Kenneth) Jarosh of Spillville, Iowa; Anne (Stephen) Igel of Rochester, Minn.; three sons, William (Vicki) McGee of Cresco; Michael (Danelle) McGee of Cresco; and Joseph (Linda) McGee of Healdsburg, Calif., 17 grandchildren and 20 great grand children.

She is also survived by two sisters, Reva Shafovaloff of Pensacola, Fla., Lois Powell of Alamogordo, N.M., one brother, Robert (Jean) Burr of Janesville, Iowa and sister-in-law Lucille Burr of Cresco.

The following proceeded her in death: her husband, Raymond McGee, daughter Shirley, son James and brother Donald Burr.

She was most loved and remembered for her warm, infectious smile.

Dena (Wiemann) Pals

BELMOND - Dena (Wiemann) Pals, 99, of Belmond, formerly of the Meservey and Sheffield areas, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond, surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the First Reformed Church, Meservey. The Reverend Philip Arnold and Reverend Melvin Voss will be officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street Southeast, Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at church on Wednesday.

Dena Wiemann, the daughter of John and Epka (Kaduce) Wiemann, was born on March 4, 1911, on the family farm at Meservey. She received her education in a rural school and Meservey High School.

Dena was united in marriage to Henry Pals, Jr., on July 13, 1929, at the First Reformed Church of Meservey. Their union was blessed with four daughters: Evanette, Wanda, Betty, and Dianne. Henry and Dena farmed and raised their family in the Meservey, Belmond, and Sheffield areas until retiring to Belmond in 1967. In addition to farming with her husband, Dena was a life long homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother, and nurturing grandmother. After moving to Belmond she worked for many years as a cook at the Belmond High School.

Dena was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey and later became a member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. She was a member of the R.C.W. and served as president, treasurer, secretary of education among other capacities of the R.C.W. Over a period of 20 years, she taught Sunday School, Catechism, and Bible School. Throughout her entire life journey her faith and spiritual journey were strong.

Dena had numerous past times she enjoyed including reading, crafts, crocheting and morning coffee with friends. She had been a resident of the Rehabilitation Center since Jan. 25, 2009.

Dena will be remembered by all who crossed her life journey as a very devout Christian, who loved her family and her many friends. She was a very gentle, caring and peaceful lady.

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Evanette (Kenneth) White, Belmond, Wanda (Leonard) Pals, Clear Lake, and Dianne Phelps, Waterloo; two sisters, Thelma Langlitz, Meservey, and Frieda Jurgens, Belmond; her grandchildren; Bobbi Jo (Guy) Priestly, Alexander, Anthony (Shelley) Foss, Belmond, Gayle (Leslie) Thompson, Belmond; Todd (Denise) Foss, Clarion, and Sally (Brad) Lindeman, Belmond; Steven (Karen) Pals, Chicago, Ill., Darwyn (Mary Ann ) Pals, Denver, Iowa, and Tracy Jo Kessler, Clear Lake; RoxAnne (Lyman) Emery, Alburnett, Iowa, Kerry (Trish) Morris, Belmond, Brian (Cheryl) Morris, Minneapolis, Minn., grand-daughter-in-law, Jane Morris, Clear Lake; Kathleen (Robert) O'Connor, Needham, Mass., Carmen (Nathaniel) Maendal, Brainerd, Minn., and Jim Phelps, Oceanside, Calif.; her great-grandchildren, Ashly, Randi, Nikki, Whitney, Brandon, Micki (Chad) Disney, Shea Marie, Ryan, Kelsey, Michael, Dara, Susan (Clay) Starrett, Ryan, Courtney(Anthony) Ayala, Joshua(Amanda) Morris, Matthew, Amanda, Michael, Tammy (James) Mason, Sarah, Bethany, Elliott, Austin, Matthew, Justin, Brigid, Liam, Julian: her great-great- grandchildren, Amaya, Izaac, Kaylie, Sharise, Madison, Nevan, Rilley Jo, and Ethan; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Dena was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry in August of 1987, her daughter, Betty Morris, a sister, Jennie Steenhard, brothers, Henry and Leonard Wiemann, a grandson, Lindsay Morrisy, granddaughter, Jody Priestly, and her sons-in-law, Derl Morris, Robert Foss, Mark Eckerman, and Dale Phelps.

MASON CITY - Thomas "Tom" Colman, 87, 962 15th Place N.E., Mason City, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel and then one hour before the service on Friday, Oct. 15.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Family suggests memorials to Thomas Colman Memorial Fund.

Thomas Colman was born on July 31, 1923, in Yankton, South Dakota, the son of Melvin and Mae Colman.

In 1942, Tom enlisted in the
United States Navy and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters aboard the Light Cruiser USS Springfield. He served on the USS New Jersey during the Korean War. In 1961, Tom served aboard the USS Surve, participating in the U.S. blockade of Soviet ships in route to Cuba during the Cuban Missiles Crisis. In 1966, he was assigned to mine-sweeping duties in South Vietnam. He served as a petty officer on a 57-foot mine-sweeper boat, also known as the Brown Water Navy, insuring the river was clear of mines for shipping operations.
Tom served in
World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Missels Crisis and the Vietnam War before retiring in 1967 after 25 years of service.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing pool, watching golf, pool tournaments and game shows on TV. He also enjoyed watching John Wayne movies.

He married Sylvia Marie Jarosh on May 25, 1968, in Mason City, Iowa.

Tom is survived by his wife Sylvia Colman, Mason City, two sons William "Bill" (Patty) Colman, Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Joe (Chris) Colman, Thornton; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, brother Pete (Pat) Colman, Des Moines; two sisters, Betty Walkner, Rockwell, Iowa and Ruby Wineman and her special friend Marvin Krull, Mason City, sister-in-law Diane Jarosh, Mason City, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Clifford and Delbert Colman.

MASON CITY - Gene L. Smail, 66, of Mason City, passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at the Iowa Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines to a better life with our Lord Jesus Christ.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday Oct. 18, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth with military honors being provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to Gene's service at the church.

Gene Leo Smail was born on Oct. 6, 1944, in Mason City to Leon and Marion Smail.

He was very clever and productive; Gene served in the
Army receiving high honors and earned a degree in city planning from Mankato State College. His occupations included semi driver for Pepsi, farmer, youth counselor at Gerard Treatment Programs, mental health advocate, leader, speaker and handyman/landlord.

Gene was married to Katherine Lake on June 13, 1978, and became stepfather to Michael and Jeremy. Gene served as teacher, role model and dad to his stepsons who are better men because Gene was part of their lives.

Gene was a passionate, big-hearted man who wore his heart on his sleeve.

Gene loved RAGBRAI, motorcycles, Pepsi, dogs, farm work, gardening, PowerBall, chocolate cake, friends, family and the Lord.

He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and an aunt, Jessie Laraway.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Robin Meyer) Godfrey and; grandchildren, Anna, Mia, Jessica, Jordan, Jonah, Julela; one great grandson, Benjamin; one brother, Gary (Sharon) Smail; and many, many friends.

Many eyes are in tears due to his passing and he will be missed profoundly.

Richard Reul "Dick" Sutton

MASON CITY - Richard "Dick" Reul Sutton, 76, died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, surrounded by his family at his daughter's home.

A memorial will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 14, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., with Pastor Dennis Tevis officiating.

Dick was born on Jan. 20, 1934, in Mason City, the son of Ruben (Pete) and Florence (Schultz) Sutton. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1952. A lifelong professional printer, Dick also worked at the Post Office and served as pastor of the Remnant Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nora Springs. For the last several years, he worked as a CNA at a local nursing home. He enjoyed spending time as a scoutmaster and an umpire for Little League baseball.

Dick married Florence Alice Sage on Sept. 15, 1951, and together they had seven children, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dick is survived by Florence, his wife of 59 years; six children: Steven (Heather) Sutton, Shoreview, Minn.; John (Sun Cha) Sutton, Wheat Ridge, Colo.; Richard (Lory) Sutton, Edina, Minn.; James (Wendy) Sutton, St. Paul, Minn.; Sharon Johnson, Mason City; and Karen (Lowell) White, Gordon, Neb.; thirteen grandchildren: Sean and Aaron Sutton, Los Angeles, Calif.; John Jr. (Amy) and Jason Sutton, Wheat Ridge, Colo.; Paul (Erica) Sutton, St. Louis Park, Minn.; Kathryn Sutton, Austin, Texas; Thomas Sutton, Edina, Minn.; Staff Sgt. Bernadette Kupka was born on Dec. 14, 1930, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Clara (Vojtech) Kupka. She graduated from Tama High School.

On May 31, 1952, she was united in marriage to Delbert Van Gampleare at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Belle Plaine, Iowa. To this union three children were born. Bernadette worked as a server at the Holiday Inn and Chart House restaurants. She later worked several years and retired from North Iowa Medical Center as a dietary technician.

Bernadette enjoyed cross stitching, bird watching, crossword puzzles and cryptoquotes. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed attending family reunions. She enjoyed spending time and keeping up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bernadette was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

RICEVILLE - Marvin Haley, 83, of Riceville passed away on Monday Oct. 11, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Marvin was born in Tama, Iowa, on April 14, 1927, to Edward and Vernice (Bentley) Haley. He attended local schools and graduated from McIntire High School. On Jan. 21, 1946, Marvin was united in marriage to Ethel Ann Alden at the Austin Methodist Church in Austin, Minn. To this union two children were born. Marvin farmed and worked at White Farm Equipment Co. in Charles City until its closing. He was a member of the Riceville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel, of Riceville; one son, Marvin Jr. and his wife Regina of Mason City; a son-in-law, Bill Bouska of Cresco; and 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Patricia Bouska.

Bradley Dean Lackore was born in Forest City on Aug. 3, 1952, the son of Duane and Alice (Ulve) Lackore. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Forest City. He received his education in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School in 1970.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen Josten on Nov. 24, 1973, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. The couple lived for a brief time in Forest City before making Garner their home.

Brad began working for Winnebago Industries after graduating from high school. Over the years he delivered many motor homes and worked in the plastics department. He enjoyed working with his hands, tinkering with engines and equipment, and fishing. He loved cruising with his nephew, Wayne Chute.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, and his cat, Max, was a close companion.
Brad is survived by his three children and their spouses, Jason (Kelly) Lackore, Kelly (Cory) Hagensick and Kristi (Gary) Smith, all of Garner; and seven grandchildren, Kaiden & Avery Lackore, Kaytlyn & Colby Hagensick, Taylor Lackore and Evan & Payge Smith. Also surviving is his father, Duane Lackore of Forest City; brothers, Brian (Val) Lackore and Kevin (June) Lackore of Forest City; a sister, Deb (Gene) Swanson of Forest City; and several nieces and nephews.

Brad was preceded in death by his mother, Alice, in 2007.

Marvin K. Lackore

GARNER - Marvin K. Lackore, 83, of Garner died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at his home.

Marvin Keith Lackore, the son of Harris and Hazel (Pringle) Lackore, was born May 31, 1927, on a farm near Hayfield. He graduated from Hayfield Consolidated High School and continued his education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. After college, he returned home to help his family on the farm.

On Dec. 23, 1946, he married Cleola A. Boller at Wichita, Kan. They lived on the home farm near Hayfield where they raised their five children. In 1977, they moved into Garner but continued farming until 1986.

Beside farming, Marv was also an entertainer. At the age of 14 he joined a musicians union and began performing with various bands in the area for the next 60-plus years including a family dance band, L & M Family Affair. In his retirement he continued to play the keyboard and trumpet for the residents at Concord Care Center and at special events around town. In recent years, playing cards down at "The Office" with "The Boys" was the highlight of his day.

He was an avid sports and Garner-Hayfield Cardinal fan, attending many games throughout the years.

Family was very important to Marv. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his many friends.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Garner Lions Club serving as past president.

Marv is survived by his wife, Cleola, of Garner; four daughters, Peggy (Leo) Dominguez of Tucson, Ariz., Nancy (Rick) Kaduce of Rockford, Jill (Dennis) Schott of Garner and Sally (David) Bergman of Britt; a daughter-in-law, Doris (Kurt) Dallman of Garner; 15 grandchildren, Lisa (Michael) Warren, Jody Buzicky, Polly (Armando) Ruiz, Lindsey (Ed) Madsen, Zachary (Katie) Kaduce, Bree (Brad) Bartlett, Brandy (Josh) Anderson, Andrew (Ashley) Schott, Matthew (Gina) Lackore, Kelly (Mitch) Muth, Katie (Chad) Koller, Melissa (Ryan) Rager, Benjamin Bergman, Willie Bergman and Holly (Dustin) Cassidy; 22 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Peggy Sue Lackore of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, where military honors will be conducted by members of the Graper Post No. 338.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at Holy Name Catholic Church where a Scriptural Wake service will be held at 8 p.m. followed by the reciting of the Rosary.

Garry Ray Paulus was born on Feb. 14, 1942, in Rockford to Earl and Bernice (Sido) Paulus. He received his education from the Rockford Community School District. In 1961 Garry enlisted in the United States
Army where he honorably and faithfully served his country until his honorable discharge in 1963.

On May 5, 1984, Garry was united in marriage to Jeanie Ackley at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford.

Garry was a very family oriented man. He treasured the time spent with his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren adored their "Papa" and he in turn adored them. Garry could always be counted on by any of his nieces and nephews to give a helpful piece of advice or to just be there to listen should they want to talk. He was a hero to many and the kind of person many aspired to be.

He had an energetic and contagious laugh that could always be picked out in a crowd, and was sure to get everyone around him laughing.

Having always been known as a hard worker, Garry held many jobs over the years, most recently working for Hoover's Hatchery in Rudd. Garry loved meeting and joking with friends new and old that he would meet along his route. When he had spare time Garry enjoyed mowing his lawn and keeping everything trimmed and in order. He also enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes, Cubs, Packers and Twins play.

Fall was Garry's favorite time of year. He loved to help his friends gather the harvest from the fields and loved spending time in the outdoors. He led a simple but rich life doing the things that he loved.

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife and the love of his life, Jeanie; children, Sarah (Nick) Wiegmann, Allison, and their children, Taylor and Ava Wiegmann; Kelly (Tim) Nash, Floyd, and their children Brendyn, Rylee and T.J. The family of Valborg Alvina Roggensack has requested that those wishing to give a memorial in her name may wish to give a memorial to the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly in her memory.

Valborg Alvina Roggensack was born on Oct. 29, 1919, in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Nils and Anna (Hermanson) Tangen. She attended school at Albert Lea Community Schools, graduating from Albert Lea High School on June 10, 1937.

She was united in marriage to Richard Roggensack on Sept. 21, 1940, at the Northwood Lutheran Church. After their marriage they moved to South St. Paul, Minn., where her husband, Richard, worked for the Rock Island Lines railroad until moving to Manly. Valborg worked for Damon's Department Store in Mason City, the Donut Hut in Manly, and also did volunteer work for the Manly Nursing Home, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and was on the election board. She was a member and very active in the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly and the Mystery church circle.

Val enjoyed playing cards, going up north fishing, golfing and traveling to Hawaii, California, Arizona and Colorado every summer to visit her son, Ron, going to the top of Pike's Peak and playing "one-armed bandits." Val and her husband, Richard, loved going to the big-band dances. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved visiting with her family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Patricia (Jim) Huston of Bloomington, Minn., and Ronald Roggensack of Eugene, Ore.; two grandchildren, Jim (Corriann) Huston of Minnetonka, Minn., and Andrew Huston of Burnsville, Minn.; a great-granddaughter, Akira Rose Huston; as well as many nieces, nephews and many other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard on Dec. 28, 1989; a brother, Thelmer Tangen; and two sisters, Astrid Hansen and Norma Lenoch.

MASON CITY - Dorothy E. Rugger, 82, of 2349 20th St. S.W., Mason City, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Marguerite Drury Ruka

GOODELL - Marguerite Drury Ruka, age 92, went to join her husband and family on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at the Mitchell Village Care Center in Mitchellville where she received wonderful care.

Funeral services for Marguerite Ruka will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell. Pastor Paddy Druhl will officiate. Burial will take place at the Amsterdam Cemetery east of Goodell.

Visitation for Marguerite Ruka will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick'ss Lane S. in Belmond, and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday, Oct. 16.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes to have memorials made to the Goodell United Methodist Church, Mitchell Village Care Center and/or Mercy Hospice.

Marguerite, the daughter of J.I. and Flora Fowler Drury, was born Aug. 31, 1918, at Rowan. After graduating from the Goodell High School, Marguerite attended the Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls. Marguerite completed a two-year teacher certification and began teaching at the Twin Lake Township School.

Marguerite was united in marriage to Merle Ruka on March 14, 1941, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Goodell. The couple had met at the church. They made their home west of Goodell where the farmed and raised their family, Gary, Lynn and Marilyn. They moved to Belmond in 1995. Marguerite moved to the Mitchell Village Care Center in 2001.

Marguerite was a member of the Goodell United Methodist Church, the U.M.W. group and the Ladies Aid. Family and friends will miss her good cooking, Christmas candy dishes and many special dishes she prepared. She enjoyed going to see the grandchildren perform in their special events and taking many trips with her sister, Florence and Donald Johnson.

Marguerite is survived by her children, Gary and wife Sheila of Belmond, Lynn and wife Lorraine of Tucson, Ariz., and Marilyn Beukema and husband Dick of Mitchellville; six grandchildren, Darcy Ruka of Council Bluffs; Julie Kraaz and husband, Todd of Omaha, Neb.; Steven Ruka and wife Dena of Thornton, Colo.; Lori Torres and husband, Octavio of Gilbert, Ariz.; Todd Beukema and wife Dawn of Bondurant; and Dean Beukema of Guthrie Center; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandson; two sisters, Florence Johnson and husband Donald of Britt and Beryl Friedow of Kanawha; brother, Keith Drury and wife Doris of Mobile, Ala.; sister-in-law, Evelyn Ruka of Boulder, Colo., and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle in 2001; brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Mae) Drury of Rowan; brother-in-law, Milton Friedow of Kanawha; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lyle (Bettey) Ruka and Donald (Eleanor) Abbas; a niece, Jayanna Friedow; and two nephews, Wayne Johnson and Steven Drury.

Clayton D. Chambers
U.S. Army Korean War

MARBLE ROCK - Clayton D. Chambers, 81, of Marble Rock died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at his home.

A funeral Mass for Clayton Chambers will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville. Monsignor Walter Brunkan will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at St. Mary's School in Roseville from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, where there will be a vigil scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by the reciting of the rosary. Visitation will continue Monday, Oct. 18, an hour prior to the Mass.

Clayton Donald Chambers was born April 13, 1929, at Colwell, the son of Clayton "Glenn" and Nellie (Hildebrand) Chambers. He received his education in rural Floyd County schools. Clayton proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On Jan. 16, 1960, he was united in marriage to Rose Mary Hansen at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore. Clayton and Rose Mary farmed and raised livestock in the Marble Rock area all their lives. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he had served on the parish council, the Cattlemen's Association and was a 4-H Leader.

He enjoyed farming, playing cards, watching Westerns and pitching softball for his children and grandchildren. Family, especially his grandchildren, were always very important to Clayton and he looked forward to sharing his life with them.

Living family members include his wife, Rose Mary of Marble Rock; eight children: David Chambers of Osage, Paul (Heather) Chambers of Nashua, Karen (Keith) Heckstein of Osage, Thomas (Debra) Chambers of Charles City, Mark (Anne) Chambers of Marble Rock, Janice (Chad) Shultz of Greene, Peggy (Chad) Seidel of Cedar Falls and Sara Chambers of Rudd; 25 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers: Wesley Chambers of Colwell and Lewis (Margaret) Chambers of Marble Rock; two sisters: Dorothy Bill of Riceville and Marion Meek of Rochester, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Fern Chambers of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: John and Roy Chambers; and two sisters: Edith Bill and Edna Ferch.

U.S. Army WWII

WEST DES MOINES - Ken Cover, 84, died Oct. 13, 2010, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Valley United Methodist Church, 4201 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at the church. Memorials may be made to Valley United Methodist Church.

Ken was born Jan. 26, 1926, in North English, Iowa, to Leon D. and Hazel King Cover. He married Lois LaVonne Evans on Nov. 28, 1946, in Sutherland.

Ken attended AIB in Des Moines. He worked for many years as a bookkeeper and controller in Wellman, Clear Lake and Mason City. He worked for 34 years as bookkeeper and assistant store manager at Damon's Department Store in Mason City.

Ken proudly served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the European Theater of Operations. He was also a member of the
VFW and Exchange Club, where he also served as president. He was a very proud and attentive parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent.

Ken is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois LaVonne Cover; his children, Steven (Mary) Cover of Des Moines, Diane Shannon of Cedar Falls, Craig (Donna) Cover of Omaha, and Brian (Laurie) Cover of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Velma Van Auken, Verla Gingerich and Mildred Wade.

Robert F. "Bob" Heller

CHARLES CITY - Robert F. "Bob" Heller, 78, of Charles City died Thursday morning, Oct. 14, 2010, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Robert Francis Heller was born Sept. 27, 1932, in Orchard, the son of Verle and Natalie (Newton) Heller. He graduated from the Orchard High School in 1950. On June 18, 1955, he was united in marriage to Verla Kamin at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Bob was a carpenter for Triad Construction for 25 years, Quade Construction for 10 years and Comprehensive Systems until his retirement in 1990. Along with carpentry, Bob farmed in the Charles City area. He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Moose Lodge and Card Club. Bob was a 4H Leader. His interests included woodworking, mushroom hunting, collecting coins, watching birds, gardening, tractors, his model A Ford and driving around checking on the crops.

Living family members include his wife, Verla Heller of Charles City; four children: Jean (Wayne) King of Charles City, Jeff (Mary) Heller of Tallahassee, Fla., Jill Jensen and special friend, Dave Schultz of Greene, and Jim Heller of Charles City; eight grandchildren: brother-in-law John Bauman of Osage; sister-in-law Linda Heller of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Ferlin Jensen; sister Betty Bauman; and brother Kenneth Heller.

Daniel O'Keefe

FOREST CITY - Daniel O'Keefe, 98, of Forest City died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Services for Daniel will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Perry Aalgaad officiating. Burial will be at at 12:30 p.m. at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Dan O'Keefe, son of Alfred and Mary (Danielson) O'Keefe, was born on a farm in Kossuth County near Ledyard and Lakota on Sept. 14, 1912. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On Oct. 12, 1935, he was united in marriage to Gladys Thompson and three daughters were born to this union. They farmed in the Lakota area for several years and then moved to a farm near Russell, Minn., in 1947. After three years they moved to the Buffalo Center area and farmed another 21 years.

In 1971, Dan retired from farming and he and Gladys built a home in Forest City where they resided for seven years and were employed at Winnebago Industries. In 1978 they built a home in Buffalo Center and lived there until Gladys died.

Dan moved back to Forest City and in 2000 he moved to Prairie View in Garner. In April of 2010 he moved to Clear Lake where he died at the age of 98 years and 1 month.

Dan held various positions on the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Board in Buffalo Center.

He is survived by three daughters: Sharon (Miller) Roskamp of Cedar Falls, Yvonne (Larry) Schuler of Nora Springs, and Donna (Lawrence) Miller of Clear Lake. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Preceeding him in death are his wife, Gladys; his parents, Alfred and Mary O'Keefe; four sisters: Marge, Alice, Ellen and Elva; and five brothers: Everett, Tom and John and two brothers in infancy.

Dorothy Eleanor Ward was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of William J. and Ada (Simon) Ward. She was united in marriage to Clifford A. Rugger on Jan. 27, 1974, in Homestead, Iowa. She was employed as a clerk for both the Rock Island Lines and the Northwestern Railroad in Mason City.

Dorothy was a caring and generous person who was devoted to the well-being of her family members. Dorothy enjoyed her home, cooking, gardening, music, family and friends. She loved dining out. Dorothy also loved helping people in need and giving to many charities.

Dorothy is survived by a sister, Gladys Lewis of Charles City; sister-in-law Ruth Ward of Mason City; stepson Kip Rugger; stepdaughter Cynthia Rugger; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1983; two brothers: Jack and Sherman; and one sister: Margie Stearns.
