moved to Mason City, where he spent the rest of his life. He graduated
from Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanics with a BS in
general engineering in June 1937. After graduation, he worked in his
father's accounting firm, Edgar S. Gage and Son. Howard was drafted into
the Army in May 1941. He went to Camp Claiborne, La., for basic training
with the 34th Division.
While home on leave he married Ethel Cathlyn Margaret Wallskog on Oct.
30, 1941, in Mason City and shortly afterward returned to duty. He was
sent to Fort Dix, N.J., then out with the first contingent to Europe in
January 1942. They landed in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In Ireland
he was transferred to the Fifth Corps, Finance Section, and was first
sent to Belfast, Northern Ireland, then to Bristol, England, in June
1942, where he became a master sergeant. On June 12, they boarded a boat
for Normandy Beach. After slow advance, they reached Paris the day after
it was liberated by French troops under de Gaulle. They moved north and
east, living in tents until they reached the town of St. Vith in eastern
Belgium, just north of the Battle of the Bulge. Howard went home on
leave for 30 days and upon returning landed at LeHavre, France., on V.E.
Day. His division was transported through France, Belgium and Germany
and ended up in Pilson, Czechoslovakia. He was honorably discharged in
May 1945.
After the war, Howard returned to work in his father's accounting firm.

City. A golfing highlight for Howard was playing several famous British
courses, including Royal Lytham and St. Annes and the Old Course in St.
Andrews in Scotland while visiting his daughter and family who resided
in England from 1978 to 1980. He met weekly for coffee with his golfing
buddies for many years (even long after his golfing days), something he
greatly enjoyed.

Cody Jay Schmit
BRITT
- Cody Jay Schmit, 16 of Britt, passed away Thursday (July 1, 2010) at
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City from injuries sustained in
an accident on June 26, 2010.
Cody's generosity will continue giving life to others through the Iowa
Donor Network.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, in the
West Hancock High School Gymnasium. Burial will take place at St.
Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Britt following the service.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 5, at the West
Hancock High School Gymnasium, and one hour prior to the funeral service
at the school. Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt is assisting the family.
Cody, the son of Joe and Billie (Rose) Schmit, was born Oct. 2, 1993, in
Mason City. He was 16 years old and was to begin his junior year of high
school in the fall. He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Britt
and loved going to Luther League, doing many fun activities with other
teens. He also attended Fellowship of Christian Athletes on Thursday
mornings before school.
Cody was a kind, big-hearted kid who enjoyed life to the fullest,
preferring to keep busy rather than sit on the sidelines watching. He
spent countless hours in the garage and had a never-ending desire to
learn everything he could about the project of the day, whether it be
his racecar, pick up, or the '69 Chevelle he restored with the help of
his dad. The entire family loved the outdoors and spent a lot of
weekends camping, fishing, boating and tubing. Cody started hunting with
his dad at a very young age and bagged his first deer when he was 13.
Sports were also very important to him and his family. An avid
Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he loved watching and playing football and
worked very hard in the weight room during the off-season. Cody's other
activities included Track, FFA, 4H and shop class competitions. He
excelled at welding, laser engraving and fabricating, often making
things from scratch. Those skills earned him first place in the "Bucket
of Junk" contest at the Hancock County Fair three years in a row.
Cody is survived by his parents, Joe and Billie, and his sister, Kellie,
all of Britt; grandmothers, Judy Rose of Mason City and Jeri Schmit of
Ventura; aunts, Roxanne Rose and her children, Jeremy and Jake, of Mason
City, Tami (Paul) Allen and their children, Mackenzie and Morgan, of
Burnsville, Minn.; uncle, Rob (Stephanie) Rose and their children, Kyle
and Missy of Center Point; great-grandmother Bonnie Rodberg of Mason
City.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Skip Rose;
great-grandfather, Stan Rodberg; and great-grandmother Vera Swartout.
The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Cody
Schmit Scholarship Fund at First State Bank in Britt.
