A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at the Hogan-Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.

Arlene Loretta was born on Nov. 26, 1920, in Mason City, the daughter of Walter Fredrick and Anna Virginia (Bronner) Becker. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Methodist Church on Feb. 28, 1932, by William H. Spence. She attended Sunday School and church in the old church on North Washington which is where the Metropolitan Bank now stands.
After graduation she was heartbroken she couldn't go on to college even though she was given a scholarship to Illinois through the help of Elizabeth Grants, her English teacher, to her alma mater. Her mother became very ill and was diagnosed with allergies and severe asthmatic and heart problems at the Mayo Clinic. As Arlene put it, "As the oldest daughter my father said I had to help with the household chores." She went to work with Montgomery Ward; then she went to work for Younkers for 31 ½ years.

Arlene remembered, "It was during the ministry of Dr. George Truman Carl, that as a member of the Administrative Board I had the privilege of meeting Norman Vincent Peale, who was to be the guest speaker at the opening of our Lenten season. It was the evening after talking to Dr. Peale for about 30 minutes that I went forward that evening and accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior".

Arlene was able to go to N.I.A.C.C. evenings and worked early morning After graduation, she took state tests and applied to the Department of Social services. She had that job for two years.

She then went with the State Health Department with the WIC program and traveled nine counties in all kinds of weather. Arlene said, "The Lord was with me all the time. He has been good to me and I continue to give myself to him every year when Billy Graham gives his crusade."

Arlene was a lifelong resident of Mason City, at 642 S. Adams Ave., and had resided at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center since October of 2002 where she made her home and had wonderful care by a loyal staff.

Arlene is survived by many nieces and nephews.
