Ronald Dean Cooke Sr. was born Nov. 5, 1946, in
Clarion, the son of Robert and Genevieve (DeLano) Cooke. He graduated
from Clarion High School 1964. He served in the National Guard from
1964-1968.
As a young teenager Ron began working in a café,
later leading him to his career of managing and operating several
businesses including the Bungalow Café, Forest City, Helen's Supper
Club, Eagle Grove, Ron's Restaurant, Clarion, Happy Chef, Story City and
Lakecrest Café, Clear Lake. Ron owned and operated the Pancake Inn,
Mason City, Dart Drive Inn and Shady Beach, Clear Lake. He later managed
Tropic Sun Fruit & Nut, Austin, Minn., and Capt. K's Ice Cream, Mason
City, and owned Iowa Walk-In Connection.
Ron was united in marriage to Donna Fjelstad in 1967;
to this union four children were born. Ron was united in marriage to
Donna Jurgensen on June 28, 1991.
In his free time Ron enjoyed dancing and listening to his wife sing. His
greatest love was spending time with family and friends.
Ron is survived by his wife, Donna Jurgensen-Cooke,
Clear Lake; children Ron Jr. (Diane) Cooke, Minneapolis, Minn., Dan
(Holly) Cooke, Clear Lake, Tami (Marcus) Willy, Winston Salem, N.C.;

Winifred was born Feb. 6, 1918, in Mason City, the
daughter of Raymond and Emma (Conaway) Bogardus. She graduated from
Mason City High School in 1937. Winifred was united in marriage to
George Dwan; to this union four children were born. She was a homemaker
while raising her children and later worked for Damons, JC Pennys and
Tempo as a sales clerk. Winifred was a seamstress for several years at
Risto Inc., working there until her retirement.
Winifred enjoyed sewing, playing cards, crossword
puzzles, spending time with her family and friends, traveling with her
oldest daughter and collecting elves. She is a member of Holy Family
Catholic Church and the St. Gregory Circle. She also enjoyed a strong
faith and prayer life.
Winifred is survived by her children, John (Di) Dwan,
Clarkdale, Ariz., Dorothy Selzer, Waukesha, Wis., Thomas (Lynn) Dwan,
Mason City, Mary Ellen Ratajesak, Ogden, Utah; grandchildren Lori,
Sharlene, Jim, Carol, Connie, John, Cathy, Michael, Sharri, Deb and
Matthew; along with several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other
relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband George
Dwan; son-in-law Lloyd Selzer; and siblings Mary Jane, Betty, Margaret,
and her twin sister, Buena.

Julian was born on Jan. 9, 1920 in Penjamo, Guanajuato,
Mexico, the son of Manuel Julian and Cricensia (Piceno) Mujica. He moved
to Manly when he was 20, and then to Mason City in the 1940s. He was
united in marriage to Sylvestra Ruiz Mejia on May 7, 1955, at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Manly. Julian worked for the Rock Island
Railroad for two years and for Lehigh Portland Cement for 30 years,
retiring in 1982.
Julian was a member of the Local D106 and of LULAC. He
enjoyed tending his garden with his wife and would give away what he
produced. He loved listening to Mexican music, playing pool, cards and
canasta. He also loved to play Slap Jack with his grandchildren. Family
was very important to him and he took such pride and joy in them. Julian
was also a very hard worker and would give you the shirt off his back.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 54
years, Sylvestra; children, Magdalena E. (David) Mujica Voy of Ankeny,
Valentine R. Mujica, David M. (Andrea) Mujica, Daniel M. (Jean) Mujica,
all of Mason City; grandchildren, Sarah and Michael Voy, Emily and
Natalie Mujica, and Nicholas, Amanda and Joseph Mujica; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Mujica; father, Manuel
and mother, Cricensia.

Marvin was born Oct. 26, 1923, in New York Mills, Minn., the son of
Oscar and Edla (Matti) Piippo. He attended Ottertall Country School
through eighth grade. On July 4, 1939, Marvin moved to Mason City. He
served in the Army from 1948-1951. On Sept. 25, 1960, he was united in
marriage to Carol Johnson in Mason City. Over the years, he worked as a
turbine operator for American Crystal Sugar, and also commercial and
residential construction until his retirement in 1985. Marvin was a
member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the
VFW. He enjoyed gardening (vegetables and flowers), camping and working
outside.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol
Piippo of Mason City; three sons, DeLon Piippo of Mason City, Darius
Piippo of Mason City, Devin Piippo and wife, Sandra, of Portland; two
grandsons, Tyler and Trenton Piippo; and two granddaughters, Destiny and
Mariah Piippo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers,
Walter, Russell, Arnold and Einar Piippo; three sisters, Gertrude, Inez
and Agnes.

David Weaver was born June 3, 1944, the son of Vernon
Crandall and Eunice (Howland) Weaver in Cedar Rapids. He graduated High

Rapids. To this union, they had twin daughters, Michelle and Melissa and
one son, Robert. Over the years, Dave worked for Rockwell International,
Armour Meat Packing, Municipal Refuse, Alexander Manufacturing, and
recently Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa (West Campus) for the last 15
years. Dave was a Mopar enthusiast. He always looked forward to Mopar
events, such as races, car swaps, car shows and Mopar Nationals. He was
a member of the Mopar Car Club. Dave also enjoyed playing cards.
David is survived by his wife of 41 years, Janice "Jan"
Weaver of Mason City; his children, Lauri Weaver of Colorado, Linda
Dettbarn and husband, Ken, of Elkader, Michelle Evans of San Marcos,
Calif., Melissa Ralston of Fertile and Robert Weaver of Mason City; his
mother, Eunice Jacobs of Marion; four grandchildren, Sean and Nicholas
Dettbarn and Seth and Katie Ralston; two brothers, John Weaver and wife,
Judy, of Marion, and Rick Weaver and wife, Cindy, of St. Peters, Mo. He
is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Rose A.
Ferjak was born on July 14, 1928, in
Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Walter and Rose (Krizek)
Kempton. She received her education at Our Lady of Loretto Academy in
Chicago, Ill.
She was
united in marriage to Joseph M. Ferjak on Nov. 27, 1945. The couple made
their home in Oak Lawn and
Palos Heights, Ill. Rose's primary career was that of a
homemaker and a mother, raising her six boys.
Upon
Joe's retirement, Rose and Joe moved to
Forest
City where she was able
to pursue her life-long love of art. She began studying art at Waldorf College
in Forest City and continued taking classes until
the time of her death. She loved the interaction with the younger
students, encouraging their talents and listening to their frustrations.
She was
a member of the Iowa Artists and exhibited her work at local and state
shows where she received high honors. She was an avid football fan and
enjoyed watching the game with her family and friends. She loved
watching and cheering on her children and grandchildren in their
athletic and music endeavors.
Rose was
a member of St. James Catholic Church in
Forest
City. She was an artist
who loved learning new techniques with every piece that she painted. It
gave her great joy to share her work with her friends and family. She
was an avid reader and loved to cook, not only for family, but also for
friends and grandchildrens' friends. She was known as Grandma Rose to
many.
Rose is
survived by her husband, Joseph; a brother, Walter Kempton of Phillips,
Wis.; six children, Kenneth (Linda) Ferjak of Forest City, Brian
(Darlene) Ferjak of Phoenix, Ariz., Michael (Deb) Ferjak of Madrid,
Steve (JoAnne) Ferjak of Killingworth, Conn., Joseph Ferjak of
Killingworth, Conn., John (Tracy) Ferjak of Aurora, Ill.; and 12
grandchildren, William (Jacqlyn), Melanie (Loren Lorenz), Abigail,
Jennifer (Eric Alfredson), Chrissy (Ryan Gust), Sarah, Emily, Julie Rose

and graduated with the Class of 1932.
Harold
moved to Belmond in 1932 through connections that he had made with Dr.
Leinbach's brother. After settling in the Belmond area in 1937, he
farmed for four years. Harold then began his life- long career of being
a self-employed mink rancher, a love and vocation he continued for
nearly 50 years.
Harold
was united in marriage to Jennie Pals on Feb. 17, 1939, at the Immanuel
Reformed Church Parsonage. The couple's union was blessed with four
children, including, sons, Robert W. Smith, James W. Smith, Bruce H.
Smith, and one daughter, Judy K. Smith. They raised their family in
rural Belmond on the family farm.
Harold
had a life-long and very strong faith. He had been active in the
Immanuel Reformed Church in numerous capacities, including serving on
the church consistory and co-chairing of building of the new church.
His
family was always of utmost importance in his life and he looked forward
to spending anytimes that he could in their presence, be it at the
holidays, family get togethers, on outing to an area lake, or almost
anything that meant spending time in their presence. Harold was always
interested young people and teaching them the values of life and skills
for the future. Harold was a long time volunteer as a 4-H leader and
volunteer with the organization. He had also done some cattle judging.
He was the consumate outdoorsman throughout his entire 90- plus years.
He was an avid fisherman and jumped at each and every opportunity to
partake of this passsion whether it meant an outing with his family
members or a day spent on the lake with his buddies. He enjoyed hunting
and even as his health declined one could often find Harold looking out
the window with his binoculars for wildlife. Even in recent times, if he
could get in the boat he would be up for a day on the lake. He raised
large and meticulously weeded garden and beautiful flowers. Harold was
also reknowned for his famous hand-shelled popcorn. Those who crossed
his life path will remember him as a pleasant and welcoming gentleman
with a special twinkle in his eye and a warm handshake.
His
memory will live on in the lives of his sons, Robert W. Smith, Belmond,
James W. (Chris) Smith, Post Falls, Idaho, Bruce H. (Pat) Smith, Mason
City,; and his daughter, Judy K. (Jon) Klink, Klemme; his nine
grandchildren; one step- granddaughter; and two
step-great-granddaughters; nieces; nephews, other extended family and
many friends.
He was
preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jennie in 1982; grandsons,
Micheal Smith and Baron Smith; brother, Howard Smith; Sister, Elizabeth
Brandenburg; and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Smith.

- Walter James "Jim" Burke, 65, of Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 17, 2010) at
the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason

Jim was born on April 5, 1944, in
Thief River Falls, Minn.,
the son of Arthur and Francis (Salwedel) Burke. He graduated from Lincoln High School
in Thief River Falls, Minn., in 1962. He graduated from Morehead
State College with a four-year business degree in 1967, and went on
to manage a bowling alley in
Warren,
Minn. In 1969 Jim moved to Mason City, and ran the
South Federal Avenue Dairy Queen for 12 years. He also ran the
County Seat Saloon, the County Seat Pizza and sold forklifts before
starting Burke's Bar and Grill in 1990.
In
his spare time, Jim loved to golf, especially going on golfing trips
in the "fun bus" with his friends, roadtriping, bowling, fishing and
watching NASCAR. He also attended the races in
Mason City
and sponsored race cars. Jim was also known as an animal lover.
He
was a past member of the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge and past Chamber
member.
Jim
is survived by his children, Daniel James (Mary) Burke, of Britt,
and Cindy (Eric) Richter, of Knoxville; grandchildren, Nicholas and
Emily Burke, Britt and Jason, Elizabeth, Jake and Natalie Richter,
Knoxville, his significant other Carmen Ramsay, of Mason City; his
sister-in-law, Lea Burke, of Parkers Prairie, Minn.; and his nieces
and nephews, Val Burke, Barb Van Tassel and Steve Burke.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Arthur
"Buster" Burke.

Gary
Mason Mallo was born on Aug. 4, 1950, in
Mason City, the son of Otto LuVern and Evelyn
(Barr) Mallo. He received his education in the
Mason City school system, graduating from Mason City High School in 1968. He was united in
marriage to Lynette Whipple on Aug. 9, 1969, in Mason City, and they had just celebrated
their 40th wedding anniversary. To this union two sons were born:
Robert and Jason. Gary
began his working career with Curries Manufacturing, and also worked
for Schneider Metal Company, David Manufacturing Company, and
Benderoff Asphalt Company and Sedar Motors, before becoming the
owner and operator of Velvet Touch Car wash from 1995 until 1999.
Gary also worked for Graham Manufacturing
Company retiring in 2006 due to ill health.
Gary enjoyed woodworking, turning wrenches,
racing, especially stock cars and go-carts, and golfing, but his
great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.
Gary
was a member of the First Baptist Church, was a former choir member
and deacon and active with the church youth, and also played for the
church softball league, former assistant scout- master for Troop 12,
and scoutmaster for Troop 212, and was also a former director of the
Knights of Columbus youth baseball league.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lynette Mallo, of
Rockwell; his children, Robert and Jason Mallo of Mason City; his
mother, Evelyn Mallo, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Dylan,
Mason, and Nate Mallo, all of Mason City; his sister, Karolyn (Mark)
Halverson, of Mason City; his brother, Larry (Wendy) Mallo, of Mason
City; numerous nieces, nephews; other extended family members and
friends.

Roger was born on Oct. 18, 1934, in
Mason City, the son of Charles and Ruby
(Pope) Morse. He graduated from Mason City High School,
and did a little bit of construction work before working at Takin
Brothers, driving truck. Roger married Kathryn Colloton on Feb. 16,
1957, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Mason City. To this union a daughter was
born. Roger then began working for Teamsters Local 828 as a business
agent and secretary/treasurer, he was also president of the Iowa
Conference of Teamsters, and did a very good job! He retired in
1991.
In
his spare time, Roger enjoyed being outdoors, whether it be
gardening or hunting. He also liked to go to casinos, play cards and
volunteer. Most of all, Roger loved to spend time with his family.
Roger was a life member of the Teamsters and a member of St. Joseph
Catholic Church.
He
is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of Mason City; daughter, Susan
(Bob) Bartsch, of Ames; granddaughter, Kelly Ann (Ryan) Halverson,
of Cherokee; grandson, Bryan Bartsch, of Ames; three
great-grandsons, Ty, Riley and Aidyn Halverson, of Cherokee;
brother, Gordon (Betty) Morse, of Mason City; sister, Francis
Miskimins, of Wyoming; brothers and sisters-in-law, James Colloton,

She
received her education at Charles City High School,
graduating in 1948. On March 11, 1949, she was united in marriage to
James Edward Tefft at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. This union was blessed with three
daughters.
James and Patricia celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary before
her husband's passing in 2008.
In
1949, Patricia and James started farming the family farm near
Nashua.
In
1961 she moved to Greene, where James was an independent truck
driver.
She
resided in Greene until 2007 when she entered the
Nora Springs Care
Center in Nora Springs.
Patricia was a dedicated employee of the
Floyd County Memorial
Hospital for 41 years as
an aide and was the very first ward clerk the hospital had. She
especially enjoyed her service there, working with employees and
assisting the patients.
Patricia was a member of the First Methodist Church of Greene and
was active in church circles and enjoyed helping with activities
there.
Patricia had a special love for her home in Greene, her yard, and
flowers. She enjoyed being outside tending it and walking her
beloved dog, Runner.
She
will be remembered by her family as a good cook, preparing delicious
holiday meals with holiday traditions such as piñatas at Christmas
and Easter egg hunts. She was an avid supporter of her grandchildren
and their many activities. "Grandma Pat" was always there for them.
Living family members include three daughters, Nancy (Steve)
Simerson, of Charles City, Jeanette (Johnny) Brezina, of Papillion,
Neb., Mary Jane (Dennis) Ross, of Greene; seven grandchildren:
Jeffrey Ross, of Waverly, Jeremey Simerson, of Nashua, Patrick Ross,
of Oakdale, Minn., Jason Brezina of Omaha, Neb., Stacie Merta, of
Marion, Michael Ross, of Clarksville, and Joey Brezina, of Omaha,
Neb.; eight great-grandchildren, Kyra Ross, Erika Ross, Olivia Ross,
Bridget Ross, Chloe Ross, Rex Ross, Avery Merta, and Aiden Merta;
one sister-in-law, Patricia McGregor, of Nashua; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Patricia was preceded in death by husband, James in 2008; her
parents, one brother, Dale Warrington; one sister, Mercedes Kay; and
one brother-in-law, Malcolm McGregor.

later joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at MacDill Air
Force Base in Tampa, Fla. There she met Erling E. Twedt and they
were married on March 1, 1952. After completing military service,
they moved to Southern Minnesota and later to Northern Iowa, where
she continued her nursing career, becoming a school nurse in
Thompson,
Iowa, and later enjoying a 27-year career at
the Lake
Mills
Care Center
in Lake Mills.
Upon
entering the Lake
Mills
Care Center,
she was blessed to be cared for by a number of staff members she had
previously trained and worked with.
Her
memory is loved, and she will missed by her husband, Erling, of Lake
Mills; three sons, Joel (Carol) Twedt, of Lake Mills, Edwin Twedt of
Ames, and James (Penny) Twedt of Urbandale; five grandchildren,
Lesley (Ben) Setterlund, Matthew Twedt, Emily Twedt, Betsy Twedt,
and Katie Twedt.

Nicolas James Aguilera Jr. was born June 2, 1953, in Mason
City, the son of Nicolas Sr. and Mary (Flores) Aguilera. He
graduated from Mason City High School, North Iowa Area Community
College and Kirkwood Community College with a culinary degree. He
moved to the Chicago, Ill., area for a while until later moving to
West Palm Beach, Fla., where he had been a chef for more than 20
years. Nicolas worked for exclusive restaurants and private clubs in
Palm Beach, Fla., for several years specializing as a pastry chef.
Nicolas enjoyed traveling, bicycling, exercising, reading,
music and movies. He really enjoyed being with friends and family.
He enjoyed the arts and performances including trips to Broadway
shows in New York.
Nicolas is survived by his parents, Nicolas Sr. and Mary
Aguilera, of Mason City; siblings, Rosie (Jim) Range and David
(Ramona) Aguilera, all of Minneapolis; Esther (David) Hepperly of
Mason City; nieces and nephews, Stephanie (Dale) Webb, Shelly
Williams, all of Minneapolis, Justin Stratton of New York, N.Y.,
Novia Aguilera of Minneapolis, Nico Aguilera of Minneapolis, Chad
Hepperly of Des Moines, Garrett and Greg Hepperly of Mason City;

She became a member of First Lutheran Church on June 4, 1951.
She was confirmed June 10, 1962, at First Lutheran Church.
Ruth Ann lived most of her life in Northwood. She spent her
life helping others never asking for anything in return. She cared
for both her parents until their deaths.
Ruth Ann taught Sunday school for many years and dispatched for
the taxi service until ALS took her voice.
She enjoyed family history and keeping scrapbooks, puzzles,
visiting family and especially enjoyed attending her niece and
nephews activities, never missing any important events.
Her faith was very important to her and played a major role in
her life.
She is survived by her brother, Ronald (Cathie) of Waseca,
Minn.; nephews, Richard (Stacie) and Jonathan (Julie) of Brownsdale,
Minn.; niece, Molly, of Waseca; and great-nephew, Jude, of
Brownsdale; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Very special friends,
Randy and Amy Severson and Rose Fredricks, and the wonderful staff
at the Lutheran Retirement Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

CRYSTAL LAKE -
Frank S. Haugland, 89, of Crystal Lake, died Monday (Jan. 18, 2010)
at Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at
St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden with Pastor Jackie Ziemer,
officiating. Burial will be at Crystal Lake Township Cemetery when
weather permits.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at
Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, and continue one
hour prior to services at the church.

Stewart Earl Wilder "Stu "
GARNER
- Stewart "Stu" Earl Wilder, 77, 1745 210th St., Garner, died Sunday
(Jan. 17, 2010) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City.
A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake VFW.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or the Food
Bank of your choice.
Stewart "Stu" was born on Sept. 7, 1932, in Clear Lake to Frank
Hart and Lillian Mae (Wilcox) Wilder. Stewart attended Clear Lake
schools and was a member of the class of 1950. He worked for
Watertower Paint and Repair before entering the Army in 1953,
serving in the Korean War. After being honorably discharged July 20,
1954, he continued working for Water Tower Paint & Repair for a
total of 11 years. He then began work at Cenex-Land O Lakes Feed
Plant in Mason City and retired in 1992 after 31 years. He was a
member of Teamsters Union Local 828 in Mason City and was on the
Board of Trustees for several years and was also Union Steward at
Land O Lakes for 17 years.
He married Lenna Mariner on Oct. 27, 1955, and six children
were born to this union.
From August 1975 until April 1978 he owned and operated with
his wife and children the Coffee Shop on Main Street in Clear Lake.
He kept his full time job during this time and was chief bottle
washer at the Coffee Shop.
He was around horses all his life and he raised many breeds of
horses, his favorite were the Halflinger breed of small draft
horses. He enjoyed driving them and made many new friends attending
the horse expos and sales. He was a member of the American
Halflinger Association.
Stu had to overcome many health issues but he never let life's
trials get him down. He was very strong until the end.
Stu is survived by his wife, Lenna Wilder, of Garner; five
children: Bonnie (Ron) Gehringer, Longmont, Colo., Beth (Barry)
Moen, Sheridan, Wyo., Barbara Wallner, Virginia, Minn., Becky
(Randy) Spilman, Clear Lake, and Brenda (Steve) Hughes, Peoria,
Ariz.; 14 grandchildren: Katie Spilman, Amber Schultz, Kelli Jo
Hughes, Dustin Spilman, Danielle (Dan) Maloit, Vanessa (Jared)
Golinvaux, Leah Hughes, Luke Moen, Nathan Wilder, Joel Moen, Kane
Wallner, Tyler Wallner, Brandon (Kelli) Hill and Adam Hill; eight
great-grandchildren: Ryan Schultz, Alexis Golinvaux, Dylan Schultz,
Cameron Golinvaux, Jonathan Golinvaux, Aaron Maloit, Michael Moore
Jr.-Hughes and Mackenzie Hill; sister, Marlys Rosberg (Wayne)
Sharon, Carlisle, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brian; his parents; and
three brothers, Daniel, Ethan and Dale.
