Belmond, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 2010) at
the Rehabiltation Center of Belmond,
Belmond.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at the
St. Olaf Lutheran Church, six miles west
of Belmond, with the Rev. James
Harbaugh, officiating. Burial will be in
the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.
today, Tuesday, at the Andrews Funeral
Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond, and
continue one hour prior to the service
on Wednesday at the church.
Those wishing to express their
sympathies through a memorial in
Shirley's name may choose a charity of
their own choice.
Shirley Mae Nelson, the daughter of
Oscar N. and Carrie (Shaw) Nelson, was
born on Nov. 7, 1932, in Belmond, Iowa.
She attended Belmond Community Schools
and graduated from Belmond High School
with the Class of 1950. Following high
school, Shirley attended
Cosmetology/Beauty School in Des Moines.
She later owned and operated her own
beauty shop in Belmond for a number of
years. Her professional life included a
tenure of over 29 years of employment as
the Activity Director at the Belmond
Health Care Center. In addition, Shirley
had worked in and directed the operation
of the beauty shop at the care center
where she continued her focus on making
the residents lives brighter and more
fulfilling, as she had done for so long
in the Activity Director position.
Many of the local high school students
who had an interest in the healthcare
field were privileged to job shadow with
Shirley over the years. She truly
enjoyed both educating them and being in
their company.
She was united in marriage to Jack
Lobdell in 1954. The couple's union was
blessed with five children: Kim, Brett,
Blake, Kurt and Tracy. Shirley and Jack
raised their family in Belmond following
their marriage. The family reflects back
fondly on memories of Sunday afternoon
fishing excursions and picnics when Jack
and Shirley would take them on an
adventure to Morse Lake and the day
would often conclude with a trek to the
Lake Cafe at Lake Cornelia for a treat.
Jack passed away on Aug. 18, 1968.
Following his death, Shirley became even
more dedicated and focused on the needs
of their children.
Shirley married Eugene "Nick" Nicholson
in 1973. During the years of their life
together the couple enjoyed bowling on
mixed couple's leagues , following the
many activities of their family, and the
daily happenings of whatever life might
bring them. Shirley's children also have
great memories of fishing trips to the
pit on the Iowa River and various other
family happenings. For 23 years, Shirley
and Nick enjoyed each other's company
and the journey of married life before
Nick died in 1996.
Shirley was a longtime member of St.
John Lutheran Church in Belmond and more
recently had became a member of St. Olaf
Lutheran Church. She was a longtime
member of the VFW Auxiliary Post No.
4244.
Shirley was an avid bingo player and
looked forward to each and every
opportunity to enjoy this favorite
pastime, whether it was a local trip,
the play of the game or one of the many
excursions to Mason City and other
places with Nick and other family and
friends for Shirley's passion for bingo
was most likely only equaled by her love
of playing cards. Be it times spent with
the Tuesday "31" Card Club, "Royal Rummy
Club", a friendly game of cribbage with
friends at the retirement apartments, or
other more intense competitions with a
team mate playing "500". She had
recently won the Belmond Hospital "500"
Bridge Marathon with one of her favorite
partners, Ryan Lobdell, her grandson.
Shirley's children and grandchildren
will miss her wonderful, homemade
caramels, anise candy, her delicious
homemade caramel corn, and the other
candies and treats she made at Christmas
and throughout the year.
Shirley truly enjoyed the simple things
of life, such as times spent in the
presence of her family, an afternoon
spent visiting with friends, or an
outing to church or another destination
with her most cherished friends. She was
never one for needing to be the center
of attention or had a great need for
materialism.
Her memory will live on in the hearts
and minds of her surviving children,
daughter, Kim Lobdell, of Iowa City; and
sons, Brett (Sonja) Lobdell, of Belmond,
Blake (Jane) Lobdell, of Clear Lake, and
Tracy (Stacey) Lobdell, of Marshalltown;
her sisters, Genevieve (Ralph) Turner,
of Belmond, and Marilyn (George)
Eekhoff, of Belmond; and brother, Eugene
(Magaret) Nelson, of Belmond; and
sister-in-law, Em (wife of the late
Robert "Ozzie" Nelson, of Belmond; her
grandchildren, Kellie and Kyle Miller,
Ryan and Reece Lobdell and Kristina
"Tina" Cook, Bryce and Colin Lobdell;
and two great-grandchildren, Lordan and
Keyra Cook; also many nieces, nephews,
and friends.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, her husbands, Jack Lobdell, and
Eugene "Nick" Nicholson; her son, Kurt
Lobdell; and her brother, Robert Nelson.

Joyce Oreanna (Almvig) Bolstad
MASON CITY - Joyce Oreanna (Almvig)
Bolstad, 83, of 403 20th Place S.W.,
passed away peacefully in the arms of
her daughter, Cynthia, Monday evening
(Jan. 11, 2010) at the IOOF Home in
Mason City.
Graveside services will be held at noon
Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at the Lakewood
Cemetery (Chapel), 3600 Hennepin Ave.,
Minneapolis, Minn., with Pastor Kathy
Graves of Trinity Lutheran Church of
Mason City officiating. There will be a
gathering of family and friends a half
hour prior to the service.
The family asks that memorials be
directed to Trinity Lutheran Church
Music Fund.
Joyce Oreanna Almvig was born Dec. 14,
1926, in La Crosse, Wis., the only child
of Olaf A. Almvig and Anna (Larson)
Almvig. She was baptized and confirmed
in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in La Crosse and kept
close ties there her entire life. Joyce
received her education in the La Crosse
public school system, graduating in
January of 1945 from La Crosse Central
High School.
During her high school years, Joyce
enjoyed and was very proud of the
fellowship of her many church activities
and her active membership playing bugle
in The Drum and Bugle Corps. She also
truly enjoyed and often reminisced of
spending summers on the farm of aunt and
uncle Selma and Leonard Larson near
Rushford, Minn.
On July 18, 1948, Joyce was married to
her love, Laddie Lyle Bolstad of La
Crosse. They were each other's support
for 59 years and 10 months until May 26,
2008, when Laddie passed away. Both
being only children reinforced the
strong love of family that they enjoyed
in their lives. To their marriage they
were blessed with two children, Gary
David Bolstad in 1949, who passed away
in 1996 at the age of 46, and Cynthia
Jane Bolstad in 1955.
Joyce and Laddie and family moved to
Mason City in 1964, where Laddie was a
lithographer at the Globe Gazette for
many years. While living in Mason City,
Joyce enjoyed being a municipal bus
driver for many years when the buses
were nothing more than Volkswagen vans.
Joyce valued the friendships that she
established with her passengers and took
pride in getting to know them by name.
In 1980, Joyce and Laddie moved to the
Twin Cities and lived there until coming
back to Mason City in 2006 to be near
daughter Cynthia and her family.
Joyce was the old-fashioned letter
writer of the family and loved to keep
in touch with anyone who had touched
their lives. Two things that she always
had first "dibs" was going through the
mail and answering any phone calls. A
testament to her love of keeping in
touch showed up every, birthday, holiday
and Christmas season with hundreds and
hundreds of greeting cards sent and
received.
Joyce also loved to travel and Laddie
made sure that they got to see many
beautiful places to include their
ancestors' homeland of Norway. In later
years, many bus tours were taken and
deeply enjoyed with new friends being
made at every stop.
Joyce was a deeply spiritual, devoted
wife and mother who showed us all how to
care for and value other people.
Left to cherish her memory is her
daughter, Cynthia Sayles (James) of
Mason City and her grandsons, Jeff
Bolstad of Clear Lake, and William
Sayles and Benjamin Sayles, both of
Mason City.
Joyce is preceded in death by her
husband, Laddie Lyle Bolstad; her son,
Gary David Bolstad; her parents, Olaf
and Anna Almvig; her special aunt and
uncle, Selma and Leonard Larson, and
many other relatives and friends along
the way.
Above all, Joyce cherished and loved her
family. She was a deeply devoted wife,
mother, grandmother and Child of God.
Blessed be her memory.
Joyce's family would like to thank the
IOOF Home "family" for their care of all
of us over the past two years and to
Hospice of North Iowa for their care and
support during the most difficult of
times this past week.
