Marvin G. Bachman

KLEMME - Marvin G. Bachman, 47, of Klemme, died Saturday (Feb. 13, 2010) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient, Mason City, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at the Klemme United Methodist Church, Klemme, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl, officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St., Klemme, and continue one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Marvin's name may wish to direct them to the family or the donor's choice.Marvin Gene Bachman, the son, of Eugene and Janice (Swanson) Bachman, was born on July 14, 1962, at Belmond. He attended and graduated from Klemme High School with the Class of 1980, and later went on to attend North Iowa Technical College in Sheldon, where he studied automotive related subjects.

As a young man, Marv was active in various extra-curricular activities including, baseball, basketball, and was an excellent football player.

Marv was a farmer throughout his entire life, with the Bachman family farms. He loved the farming profession and working the land. As the years went by he continued this loved profession and expanded his ambitions into the trucking industry.

Marvin was united in marriage to Carrie Sorenson on July 13, 2002. Following their marriage, the couple expanded the trucking operations and started Riverview Farms and Trucking which they have owned and operated since they were married.

The two loved to travel the countryside along with their other drivers who worked for them. Marv had a great passion for the outdoors and looked forward to any opportunity to going a fishing excurison to Canada, Mille Lacs Lake, Leech Lake, or a more regional outing to Clear Lake. He also enjoyed pursuing his passion and the commeraderie of family and friends while hunting pheasants, deer, coyotes, and various other game the woods and uplands might bring.

Marvin was a single father for many years prior to marrying Carrie and relished this role and the challenges and rewards that it brought in caring for the needs of his children. He enjoyed taking them and the grandkids on mini bike, four wheeler, truck, and tractor rides.

Marv also enjoyed being a grandfather and was looking forward to a granddaughter's expected arrival in May of this year.

Marv and Carrie enjoyed the freedom Harley riding road trips and socializing with friends and family. Those who knew Marv will remember him as a "good friend" and soft-hearted man who would do almost anything for anyone and was a very hardworker. He loved to visit and enjoyed good times with family and friends.

Marvin looked forward to summer afternoons spent on the waters of Clear Lake near Farmer's Beach. Marv also enjoyed the companionship of their dogs, Sparky and Sadie. He enjoyed classic rock music and was a fan of Tony Stewart and Nascar racing in general.

In recent years, Marvin had became a member of the Klemme Volunteer Fire Department and had always liked to give of himself to the Klemme Community where he had lived his entire life.

Marvin's memory will live on in the lives and hearts of his surviving wife and partner, Carrie Bachman, P.O. Box 258, Klemme, IA, 50449; his children; son, Chris Bachman and Fiancee Tera, of Klemme; daughter, Dani (Nick) Neubauer, of Hampton; sons, Chandler (Chelsvig) Bachman and Jameson (Chelsvig) Bachman, both of Belmond; grandchildren, Christian Bachman, of Klemme, and Libby Smith, of Hampton; his parents, Eugene and Janice Bachman, of Clear Lake; his mother-in-law, Barb Gremmer, of Meservey, and father-in-law, Keith Sorenson, of Britt; cousins, extended family and friends, and his beloved companions, Sadie and Sparky.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, and his uncle, Albert Swanson.

Robert Charles "Shorty" Bertelson

OSAGE -Robert "Shorty" Charles Bertelson, 82, formerly of Charles City, died peacefully the morning of Sunday (Feb. 14, 2010) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Care Center, after battling Alzheimer's, and recently, mini-strokes.

A small private memorial service will be held in Osage for Shorty's family. A musical celebration of Shorty's life will be held at the Charles City VFW on March 27, 2010.

Robert was born on Oct. 11, 1927, in Olmstead County, Minn. Though originally named Frederick Charles Henry, he was soon thereafter adopted by his aunt and uncle, Sylvia and Carl Bertelson. He graduated Fort Atkinson High School in 1947. Shorty served in the Army two years during the Korean War. He was issued many medals and was honorably discharged.

He returned to work at Oliver Tractor in Charles City and retired after 34 years with White Farm Equipment. He then became a locksmith, serving area towns. In 2005, he received recognition by the Charles City Chamber of Commerce for 25 years in business.

In 1953, he married Maxine Moser, and to this union, one son, Victor, was born. His young wife died at age 24 from diabetes.

In 1961, he married Barbara Nehls, and to this union were two daughters, Connie and Jean, were born.

In 1974, he married Donna Head, and on March 4, they would have celebrated 36 years together.

Shorty had many hobbies. He had been a Scout leader, and loved fishing, boating, and camping. He enjoyed playing in local pool leagues. His Sundays were spent watching NASCAR, cheering on Dale and later Jr. He also spent many hours bird- watching at his and Donna's home at North Iowa Street in Charles City - the cardinal being his favorite. He was a member of the VFW for over 30 years and a member of the American Legion. He also enjoyed arguing politics with his son.

Music was always a very important part of Shorty's life. He played coronet in school and followed the big band sound locally. He later learned to play the accordion. He was an excellent dancer and "loved both kinds of music - country AND western," as he put it. He never missed a dance and was considered an honorary member of both the "Country Blue Boys & Linda Sue" and "Wichita" bands. He especially loved the sound of the steel guitar. One of Shorty's favorite summer pastimes was going to Party in the Park and listening to "Endless Summer." He was a long time member of the Reba McEntire fan club, meeting her several times.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Donna Mae, of 820 Ash Street in Osage; son, Victor Charles Bertelson, of Norfolk, Va., daughters, Connie Farrell Loesch, of Stewartville, Minn., and Jean (Lydia) Adams, of Fairmont, Minn.; stepdaughters: Linda Sue Baker, of Osage, Deb (Tom) Clark, of Osage, and Barbara Garbes, of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren: Christie and Kayla Bertelson, of Fort Worth, Texas, Jeannie Sue, Vickie, Eric, and Melinda Bertelson, of Norfolk, Va., Michael (Michelle) Farrell, of Norfolk, Va., Joshua Farrell, Austin, Minn., and Ashley Adams, of Fairmont, Minn. He is survived by three step-grandchildren: Tracie Garbes, of Clear Lake, Adam (Nicole) Clark, of Osage, Dustin Clark (special friend Whitney Chambers), of Waterloo; six great-grandchildren, and his life long friend, Paul Doubek of Fort Atkinson.

Cremation Society of Eastern Central Western Iowa is assisting the family.

Kyle Patrick Bowers

CRESTON - Kyle Patrick Bowers, 30, of Creston died Friday (Feb. 12, 2010) at the Greater Regional Medical Center, Creston.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the First Christian Church in Creston, with Mary O'Riley, officiating. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 16, 2010 at the Pearson-Coen-Beaty Funeral Service in Creson, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Kyle Patrick Bowers, the son of Paula (Clem) White and Dave Bowers, was born on Nov. 25, 1979, in Creston. Kyle graduated from Creston High School with the Class of 2000.
 
He worked for S.I.R.F. as a paper shredder for four years. He also worked at Innovative Industries and Midwest Opportunities in Corning.

Kyle loved watching movies and listening to music. He loved camping, dogs and cats and especially loved babies. He enjoyed going out to eat and always had room for dessert after a meal.

Left to cherish Kyle's memory are his mother and stepfather, Paula and Randy White, of Creston; his father and stepmother, Dave and Sue Bowers, of Mason City; his sister: Stacy Bowers (significant other, Ryan Henryson), of Des Moines; his stepsisters: Jennifer O'Brien, of Des Moines,and Krista O'Brien, of Chicago, Ill.; his stepbrother: Jesse (Valerie) White, of Creston; niece: Kailyn White, of Creston; his Nephew: Christian White, of Creston; his grandparents: Alice and Orvin Bowers, of Creston; his stepgrandmothers: Darlene White, of Shannon City; and Marian Nabler, of Cherokee Village, Ark.; his stepgreat-grandmother: Helen Hanggee, of Cherokee Village, Ark.; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his special roommates: Nathan Brammer and Donnie Jackson.

Preceding Kyle in death were his maternal grandparents, Bob and Helen Clem.

GREENE - Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Hagarty, 66, of Greene, died peacefully Monday (Feb. 15, 2010) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene, of complications of kidney cancer.

Martha M. Johnson

FOREST CITY - Martha M. Johnson, 85, of Forest City, died Saturday (Feb. 13, 2010) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, with Lay Pastor Rose Visser officiating.

Visitation will be held an hour prior to service at the church.
Burial will be in the spring at Ellington Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Martha M. Johnson was born in Ellington Township, Hancock County, on Feb. 22, 1924, one of 13 children born to Barney and Anna (Cook) Pitkin.
She received her education in rural school and helped her parents at home. She then worked as a housekeeper for a family near Britt before returning to Forest City. She worked for many years in the maintenance department at Waldorf College.

In 1976, Martha married Ben Riekena. He passed away in 1978. On Jan. 3, 1981, she married Robert Johnson at Faith Lutheran Church and the couple made their home in Forest City. Bob and Martha together helped care for many of their elderly friends, providing transportation and companionship for the homebound.

Martha could do almost anything she put her mind to. She kept a big garden and canned lots of produce. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting and over the years did lots of painting and wallpapering - both inside and outside homes.

She was a wonderful cook and cooked for the Forest City Hospital and at Forest Haven. She loved to walk for exercise and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Miller.


She is survived by her husband, Robert Johnson, of Britt; son Glen Pitkin, of Sandstone, Va.; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother George Pitkin; and sisters Naomi Holmes and Alice Jacobson; and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings

MASON CITY - Robert LeRoy Thomas, 52, of Mason City, died Saturday (Feb, 13, 2010) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 17, 2010), at the First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Margaret Hutchens, of the First Christian Church, of Charles City, officiating.

Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and also one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.

Robert was born May 19, 1957, in Mason City, the son of Ralph and Iona (Bailey) Thomas. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1975 and from North Iowa Area Community College in 1977. He then attended the University of Iowa.
Robert worked as a machinist and manager of Thomas Machine Company until the time of his retirement in 2006.
 
He loved his family and especially enjoyed watching his niece and nephews grow into adults. He also enjoyed his friends, cats, nature, and followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings.

Robert is survived by his brother, Leon Thomas and wife, Mary, of Mason City; sister, Barbara Colvin, of Hawkeye; brother, Mark Thomas and wife, Tralee, of Mason City; nephews, Dylan Thomas, Derek Thomas, Eric Thomas and wife, Gail, and Jason Thomas; niece, Alyssa Thomas; aunts, Hazel Mae McGowan, Leona Cooperman, and Leila Young and husband, LeRoy; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Ralph and Iona Thomas; brother-in-law, Steve Colvin; uncles, Merlin "Mac" McGowan, Dr. Martin Cooperman, Robert LeRoy Thomas, and Marlin Bailey; and special friend, Kathy Greenan.

Verna was born March 8, 1922, in rural Kanawha, the daughter of Emil and Anna (Schoenwetter) Pringnitz. She graduated from Garner High School. She worked on the family farm and later at a clothing store in Clear Lake.

Verna married Don Ott on Oct. 22, 1947, and to this union four children were born.
Verna worked in the cafeteria at the Clear Lake High School and Miller Hardware Store for many years. She enjoyed gardening, canning, woodworking and reading.
Verna is survived by her three children, Rick Ott and his wife, Linda, of Clear Lake, Rod Ott and his wife, Barbara, of Clear Lake, and Vickey Ott of Bland, Mo.; two grandchildren, Angela Ott of Lafayette, Ind., and Brady Ott of Clear Lake; one sister, Doris Groesbeck, of Garner; and one brother, Ron Pringnitz and his wife, Marge, of Kanawha; and several nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Terry Ott; two sisters, Lois Lange and Merlin Mau; and two brothers, Virgil Pringnitz and Emil "Dutch" Pringnitz Jr.

Her family moved to Iowa when she was age 7. She attended Cerro Gordo County Schools and also attended one year at the Open Bible College in Des Moines.

She married Rev. Russell E. Pope on Jan. 1, 1927, in Swaledale. Over the years, her husband was a pastor in Des Moines in 1936, Swea City in 1937, Mason City from 1938 to 1945, Waterloo from 1945 to 1948, Casper, Wyo., from 1948 to 1955, Olean, N.Y., from 1955 to 1956, Jefferson from 1957 to 1970, Swea City from 1970 to 1973; and then moved to Clear Lake, where they retired.

Alice was a member of the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake. She enjoyed praying, reading her Bible, having scriptures and her late husband's poems read to her and listening to Gaither music.

She also enjoyed gardening, pulling quack grass, embroidery, crossword puzzles, and watching horse races, especially the Kentucky Derby. Alice was a prayer warrior.

Alice is survived by three sons: Wayne Pope and wife, June, of Mason City, the Rev. Dr. R. Harold Pope and wife, Joan, of Bettendorf, Paul Pope and wife, Karen, of Jefferson; two daughters: Rosalie Goff of Glenrock, Wyo., and Mary Ann Freeman and husband, the Rev. Dr. John, of Mansfield, Ohio.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Warren Sears of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993; her parents; one daughter, Lois Pope; one brother, Theodore Sears; three sisters, Irene Stockberger, Elizabeth Pope and Lena Kline; three grandchildren, Sharon McElwee and Linda and Marcia Pope; and two great-grandchildren, Amy Hefty and Murphy Taute.

Delores Rae Rinnels

MASON CITY - Delores Rae Rinnels, 66, of 902 N. Polk Ave., died Sunday (Feb. 14, 2010) at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Hogan-Bremer -Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Delores Rae Austin was born April 15, 1943, in Mason City, to Cecil Robert and Florence Juanita (Ward) Austin. Delores attended country school in the North Iowa area.

Delores was united in marriage to Simon E. Rinnels on Feb. 12, 1961, in Easton, Minn.; to this union four children were born. Delores was the owner of Dee's Day Care. For several years she was an in home day care provider. Delores also worked as a Head Start teacher.

Delores' hobbies included crocheting, baking, spending time with her grandchildren and she loved traveling to take new adventures. She was the past president of the Grandmother's Club.

Delores enjoyed all the time spent with her friends at the Dialysis Clinic at Mercy Medical Center-West Campus.

Delores is survived by her children, Karl and fiancée (Christy Hewitt), of Mason City, and Roy Rinnels of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Harvey Austin, Hazel Raprager, Doug (LaDonna) Prime, LaVerna Colombo, and Thelma (Rick) Beightol; sister-in-law, Joyce Austin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Delores is preceded in death by her parents, children, Kevin and Rickey Rinnels; brothers, Richard, James and Tommy Austin.

Sharon was born Oct. 13, 1941, in Osage, the daughter of Harold and Stella (Lutz) Wright. She graduated from Osage Schools. Sharon was married to Gordon Djuren on Sept. 26, 1959. Gordon and Sharon have lived in rural Mason City for many years.
Sharon had a passion for music and loved to play the organ. Sharon enjoyed spending time with all her family, and was especially fond of her grandchildren.
She was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she served as the organist and a member of the LWML. She also was a member of the F-100 Truck Club, American Guild of Organists and the New Horizons Band.
Sharon will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gordon Djuren; children, Dave (Carol) Djuren of Mason City, Marie Djuren of Topeka, Kan., Wanda (John) Goranson of Waukee, and Troy (Crystal) Djuren of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Travis (Jessi) Djuren of Des Moines, Jason Djuren of North Carolina, Crystal Djuren and fiancé, David Smith, of Alaska, and Jonna and James Goranson of Waukee.

Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Hagarty

Gerald Joseph Hagarty was born on June 13, 1943, in Greene, Butler County, Iowa, a son of Donald and Berniece (Dougherty) Hagarty, and passed away peacefully on Monday (Feb. 15, 2010) at Liebe Care Center in Greene from complications of kidney cancer
.
He received his education in country schools, Sacred Heart Academy and Greene High School, graduating in 1961.

Jerry hauled milk for Urban Kelly and Ron Schuknecht before being hired by Barth Chevrolet in 1976. He later established Jerry's Automotive, located near the family farm, where he worked until stricken with cancer in the fall of 2009. While working as a mechanic, he also hauled milk part time for Tim McConnell of Cresco and made many friends along his route.

Jerry was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene where he served with the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Library Board and volunteered time delivering meals on wheels. He enjoyed race cars and restoring vintage automobiles.
He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Jack (Jeannie) Hagarty of Racine, Wis., Tom Hagarty of Des Plaines, Ill., Renee (Fred) Billman of Racine, Wis., Janet (Gene) Hagarty of Iowa Falls; and, several nieces and nephews. Jerry leaves many friends but he will be especially missed by Dean and Kay Brinkman of Greene, Brenda Steidl of Mason City and Kenny Knapp of Greene.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.

William F. "Bill" Orcutt

CLEAR LAKE - William F. "Bill" Orcutt, 76, of 301 26th Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 2010) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, a First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave., with the Rev. Michael C. Nash officiating.

William Francis Orcutt was born April 13, 1933, and was welcomed into the arms of Charles and Ruth Orcutt. Bill attended Anita High School in Anita and graduated amongst the class of 1951. Following his high school graduation Bill attended Drake University for two years before entering the Air Force.

On Aug. 13, 1953, Bill was united in marriage to Colette Moeller in Biloxi, Miss., and to this union three children were born. He and Colette made their home in Des Moines and spent many years summering in Clear Lake until moving to Clear Lake following their retirement.

Bill originally served as an air traffic controller, but soon discovered he had the spirit of a true entrepreneur and went on to operate many different businesses throughout his career.

Bill was known as a hard worker; he was dedicated to providing for and spending time with his family. Proudly he was able to provide a college education and graduation to all three of his children.

Bill was a member of First Congregational Church and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.
Bill is survived by his wife, Colette, of Clear Lake; three children, Dennis (Michelle) Orcutt of Denver Colo., Lynette (Bob) Proffitt of Portland Ore., and Kristine (Rick) Brakken of Sausalito, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Max, Paige, Madison, Carly, Brooke, Kelly and Jack; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Harvard) Coon, of Fort Smith, Ark.

Preceding Bill in death are his parents; a sister, Sharon Boone; and a brother-in-law, Mark Moeller.

Ruth Walljasper

TRENTON, Mo. - Mrs. Ruth Walljasper, a 76-year-old resident of 1927 Mariner Road in Trenton, Mo., passed away at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 17, 2010) at her home where she had been under hospice care.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Trenton, Mo. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery at Trenton.
No visitation is planned at Resthaven Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to be given to either the Jewitt Norris Library or the Liberty Hospital Tree House.

Mrs. Walljasper was born on March 29, 1933, at Mason City, the daughter of John and Regina Lang Cunningham. She attended schools in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1951.

In 1953 she graduated from Mason City Junior College. She then received her bachelors of elementary in education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1964.
On June 11, 1966, she was married to Frank Walljasper at Mason City. He preceded her dying on Nov. 27, 2001. They moved to Trenton after their marriage. She had taught school for 13 years in Iowa and then taught fourth, fifth and sixth grades in the Trenton School System at Norton and S.M. Rissler schools for 22 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the St. Ann's Alter Society, Grundy County Retired Teachers, Red Hatters and the Book Club.

Mrs. Walljasper is survived by two daughters, Ann, now Mrs. Brad Reel, of Bradley, Ill., and Mary, now, Mrs. Warren Woodson, of Trenton; a son, Joe Walljasper, of Columbia, Mo.; a sister, Janet, now Mrs. Larry Kelly, of Mason City; and by six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sam and Bev Woodson and Brian, Caroline and Sarah Reel.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, Roger, Charles and Larry Cunningham.

MASON CITY - Donald K. Allen Sr., 86, of Mason City, died on Thursday (Feb. 18, 2010) at home surrounded by his family.

Donald is survived by 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, sisters, Dorothy Blakesly, of Seattle, Wash., Patsi Paul of Bemidji, Minn., brothers, Jesse Allen, of Mason City, Gail Allen, of Meservey, Jerry Allen, of Yucca Valley, Calif.

Preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and sisters, one grandson, one son-in-law, and one daughter-in-law.

Don was an avid sportsman, archer, and fisherman. He loved to bowl, spend time with his family and was an avid reader of Louis Lamour. He retired from the Teamsters Union as a Union Steward after 29 years.

Elwyn Brouwer

SHEFFIELD - Elwyn Elmer Brouwer left his temporary home of 83 years on Feb. 13, 2010, after a long battle with Parkinson's.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with Pastor Janet Rieckhoff-Faris presiding. Interment will be at a later date.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the church.


Elwyn was born on Sept. 13, 1926, in a rural home in Klemme to Arthur and Sylvia (Moberly) Brouwer. He was the second of seven children in the family. During his childhood years, the family had several moves before ending up on a farm west of Sheffield.

After graduating from Sheffield High School he did construction work for Berding Construction.

He then married his sweetheart E. Joyce Froning on April 11, 1948, at Salem Methodist Church in Chapin. To this union they had two daughters, Sandra J. Brouwer and Susan M. Brouwer Rother.


They became inseparable as they encountered all their adventures together. They ran the Sheffield Locker together for three years before moving to the country to start their farming career.

They farmed west of Chapin raising all the typical crops and livestock but were so very proud of his black angus herd. In 1991 they retired from farming to enjoy a more relaxed life.

They enjoyed family get-togethers and helping his family and friends whenever they needed it. They looked forward to camping with family and friends and spending time in Texas with the other snowbirds.

He liked to go fishing with his grandsons and friends and golfing with Joyce. When on the farm, you could find him either tinkering around in his woodshop or in his garden. He was always ready to play a game of cards or entertain people with his harmonica and telling jokes.

He was an active and committed member of the Salem Methodist Church in Chapin .
Elwyn will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, E. Joyce Brouwer; daughters, Sandra Brouwer and Susan and Mark Rother; grandsons, Ryan and Becky Rother, Tony and Jessica Rother, Chad and Danica Brouwer; great-grandchildren, Rose and Brooke Rother, Landon Rother, Jaden Brouwer. His brothers and sisters, Norma (Karl) Zimmerman, Ardella (Dean) Oldag, Duane (Dorothy) Brouwer, Darlene (Merlin) Peter, and Gordon (Jean) Brouwer and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an older brother, Ivan; and his parents, Arthur and Sylvia Brouwer.

Russell G. Petersen

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -Russell G. Petersen, 78, of Snellville, Ga., entered into rest on Feb. 17, 2010.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Marlies Petersen; two sons and daughters-in-law, Russell Christopher (Shelby) Petersen, of Cumming, Ga., and Gregory Blair (Ivana) Petersen, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two grandsons, Cameron and Alexander Petersen; four siblings, Gary (Irma) Petersen, of Mason City, Joanne (Kenneth) Schumacher, of Lemon Grove, Calif., Beverly Golen, of Sandstone, Minn., Soren (Judith) Petersen Jr., of Atlantic, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mr. Petersen was born on Oct. 1, 1931, in Mason City to Johanna Carlsen Petersen and Soren Peter Petersen Sr. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired as a sales manager with railroad companies, including the Santa Fe Railroad, with over 30 years of service.

Mr. Petersen served as an officer of the Traffic Club of Dallas, Texas; as the president of the German-American Citizens' Association of Kansas City, Kansas; as a governor of the Kansas City, Mo. chapter of the American Diabetes Association; and as a governor on the board of directors of the Kansas City, Mo. chapter of the American Turner organization.
He enjoyed landscaping, gardening and planting trees. He was a bicycle enthusiast, loved to read and travel and was known to carry his weight in discussing politics. His family deeply mourns his loss.

A memorial internment service will be held at a later date in Mason City.

Donald K. Allen Sr.

MASON CITY - Donald K Allen Sr., 86, of Mason City died on Thursday (Feb. 18, 2010) at home surrounded by his family.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at St James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.

Visitation with the family will be after the services at the church.

Donald is survived by the love of his life, Rose Mary, who he married on Sept. 2, 1945. They had seven children, Donald K. Allen Jr. (Joyce) of Mason City, James Allen (Linda) of Mason City, Bonnie Rosa-Mosena (Steve Mosena) of Clive, Linda Dodson (Jim) of Lusby, Md., Susan Flores of Mason City, Jeannie Hanson (Mark) of Glenville, Minn., and Martin Allen (Shelly) of Mason City. Donald is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Blakesly of Seattle, Wash., and Patsi Paul of Bemidji, Minn.; brothers, Jesse Allen of Mason City, Gail Allen of Meservey, and Jerry Allen of Yucca Valley, Calif.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and sisters, one grandson, one son-in-law, and one daughter-in-law.

Don was an avid sportsman, archer, and fisherman. He loved to bowl, spend time with his family, and was an avid reader of Louis Lamour. He retired from the Teamsters Union as a union steward after 29 years.

Douglas L. Barkema

BELMOND - Douglas L. Barkema, 51, of Belmond died Wednesday (Feb. 17, 2010) from injuries sustained in an industrial accident.

Funeral services for Doug Barkema will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be directed to First Reformed Church, Meservey.

Carl Dean Belz

ST. ANSGAR - Carl Dean Belz, 80, of St. Ansgar died Thursday (Feb. 18, 2010) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Private family service will be at a later date.

Carl Dean Belz was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Worth County to Lawrence and Ruth (Greiner) Belz. He served in the Army during the Korean War.

He married Glenda Blakestad on March 10, 1967.

After being discharged from the Army, he began farming and was in the poultry business for several years. His last job was driving LP gas truck.

Carl enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, coffee with friends, playing cribbage and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda, of St. Ansgar; son, Shannon (Nikki) Belz, of Osage; daughters, Holli (Scot) Schweinfurth of Garner and Heidi (Chris) Jax of Rose Creek, Minn.; two sisters, Evelyn Olson of Ramsey, Minn., and Sylvia Olson of New Brighton, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Saylor, Gage and Sadie Belz, Abigail, Blake and Cody Schweinfurth and Tayler and Karter Jax.

Ardith M. Holt

Funeral services for Ardith M. Holt will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley, Minn., with the Rev. Laura Fladten officiating. A spring burial will be held in the Burt Township Cemetery.

Ardith Holt, age 97, of Spring Valley died Thursday (Feb. 18, 2010) at Harmony Health Care Center where she had resided for a short time.

She was born Oct. 23, 1912, in Lone Rock to William and Sarah "Sadie" (Martin) Knoll. She graduated from Lone Rock High School in 1931 and continued her education at UNI in Cedar Falls.

On Nov. 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to George Sears and they were later divorced. In June 1958 she was united in marriage to Abner Holt and they were also divorced.

Ardith worked as a rural school teacher, for Libby's and at Methodist Hospital for a number of years.

She enjoyed her roses and her flower beds, she also enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and raising her sheep.

She is survived by four children, Joyce Hoff of Mason City, Mervin (Mary) Sears of Harmony, Millie (Jerry) Simes of Austin, Minn., and Jack (Alice) Sears, of Palm Coast, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marion Knoll, of Burt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Minnie Baker; a brother, William "Bill" Knoll; and a son-in-law, Dick Hoff.

 Lonnie Kay Jurgens

ZION, Ill. - Lonnie Kay Jurgens, 43, of Zion, Ill., died Wednesday (Feb. 17, 2010) at Vista Memorial Hospital East in Waukegan, Ill.

A graveside service for Lonnie will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City, with Pastor Gerald Swanberg of the United Methodist Church in Forest City, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Lonnie Kay Jurgens was born June 28, 1966, in Winnebago, Neb., the daughter of Lynn Jurgens and Karen Markwardt-Blakewell. Lonnie received her education in the Albuquerque, N.M., and Forest City school systems.

After her schooling Lonnie joined Job Corps for a short time. Lonnie moved from Winnebago, Neb., to Zion, Ill., and had been a resident of Zion for 24 years. During her time in Zion, Lonnie took care of a close friend of hers (David).

Lonnie enjoyed arts and crafts, loved to draw and was very artistic.

Lonnie professed her faith at Paradise Hills United Methodist Church in Albuquerque, N.M.
Those left to cherish her memory are her father, Lynn (Becky) Jurgens, of Forest City; her mother, Karen Markwardt-Blakewell, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; her brothers, Randy (Anita) Jurgens of Indianapolis, Ind., and Tim (Lisa) Jurgens of Forest City; her sisters, Lori (Luis) Zapata of Chaparral, N.M., and Carol (Steve) Hugo of Woden; grandmothers, Iona Markwardt of Clear Lake and Frieda Jurgens of Belmond; a family friend, Ruth Welscott, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; special friends, David and Carmelita; and many other friends at Zion, Ill., as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other extended family members and friends.

Lonnie was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Lloyd Jurgens and Harold Markwardt; a brother and sister, Todd and Tammi Jurgens who died in infancy; and a nephew, Kodi Elbert.
