Elizabeth Anna Marie Moore

MASON CITY - Elizabeth Anna Marie Moore, 102, passed away Sunday (Dec. 13, 2009) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the Hogan-Bremer- Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City, with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. A private family inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery Mason City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to Telephone Reassurance, Hospice of North Iowa and the North Iowa Humane Society.

Elizabeth was born on Dec. 10, 1907, in Fairfield. She was the youngest of five children born to German immigrants, Henry and Charlotte (Kirchner) Baier, Sr. In 1913, the family moved to the Algona area. She graduated from high school there in 1927 and later that year, joined her sister in Chicago, Ill., where she enrolled in the Gregg Business College. Her first job was with Underwriter's Laboratories in Chicago. After her sister married, she returned to Iowa and began working in the syndicate department at The Des Moines Register & Tribune.

When Elizabeth was five years old, the family discovered she was able to play the songs and scales her sister was learning from piano lessons, even though Elizabeth could barely reach the pedals. From that time on, Elizabeth was hooked on music - an enjoyment she experienced the remainder of her life. She had the amazing ability to play by ear, picking up a melody just by listening to a rendition of it. Wherever a piano was available, Elizabeth entertained her family and friends with impromptu "concerts" as they gathered round the piano to sing, dance, and listen. The music of the "Roaring '20s" always remained her favorites especially Dixieland jazz. She created much happiness throughout her life with this musical gift.

Elizabeth married David Raphael "Ray" Keefe on Sept. 9, 1933, in Des Moines. In 1935, the couple moved onto the Baier land west of Algona to begin farming. They were blessed with a daughter, Gweneth Rae.

On April 12, 1947, she married Michael J. Moore in Des Moines. Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to Mason City, where she had resided ever since.

In 1948, she began employment with the United Dairy Inc., and she retired in1973. After her retirement from office work, she then began using her musical ability playing in various clubs. She worked at the piano bar in the Madonna Inn (now the Holiday Inn) in Mason City for several years. She truly enjoyed these sessions, usually having as much fun as the customers during sing-alongs. Though she retired from this occupation in the mid-1980s, she still contributed her time and talent for special occasions.

She was a member of a group formed at the Moose called "The Mad Hatters." These women performed skits for fellow members and also furnished entertainment for various organizations throughout Mason City. She provided the piano music while others contributed with assorted novel instruments. Elizabeth was also the pianist for the Women of the Moose for many years.

When Elizabeth was 90, she moved to The Manor. She lived there 10 years and, again, entertained residents often with her music. She "took" her piano with her when she decided to enter the Good Shepherd Health Center, and continued to entertain residents there as long as she was able.

She enjoyed traveling and was able to really pursue this activity after retiring. She went on trips that took her many places in the United States including Hawaii and Alaska, the Caribbean, Spain, Morocco, Canada, and Mexico. A big highlight for her was touring many European countries for six weeks where she was able to meet and visit distant German cousins.

Other activities she enjoyed were fishing, crossword puzzles, bingo, and cards. She was also an avid reader. She possessed a gregarious outgoing personality along with a great sense of humor and endeared herself to many throughout her life time. She was always able to "connect" with folks, young and old, especially through her music.

Elizabeth was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter No.870 and the Unity Chapter No.58 of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Gweneth and Donald Cottingham, of Mason City, two step-grandchildren, Mary Cottingham, of Minneapolis, Minn. and Ann Wichman, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two nephews, and a niece.

She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one sister, Helen (Arthur) Claussen; and brothers, Henry Jr., George, and August Baier; sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law as well as nieces and nephews.

Kathleen Ann Juffer

MASON CITY - Kathleen Ann Juffer, 59, of Mason City passed away peacefully Thursday (Dec. 17, 2009) at Good Shepherd Health Center from complications related to early-onset Alzheimer's Disease.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Grace Evangelical Free Church, 440 N. Illinois Ave., with Pastor Scott Davis officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations in Kathy's name be given to the donor's choice of the adult day-care program of the Mason City Salvation Army, the Mason City Public Schools Educational Foundation or the Newman Catholic Schools.

Kathy was born Dec. 15, 1950, in LeMars, the daughter of Kenneth and Phyllis (Miller) Clark of Larabee. She spent the early years of her life on the family farm in Cedar Township.

Among her happiest memories were that of being a farm kid, helping her mom and dad with chores on the farm, and the time she spent going to school in Larabee. After her father was tragically killed in a car accident in 1959, her mother returned to college to earn her teacher's degree and the family eventually moved to Cherokee.

Kathy graduated from Cherokee Washington High School in 1969 and went on to earn her B.A. in elementary education from Morningside College.

Kathy taught first grade at Homer, Neb., and at the Ridgeway Elementary Center in the Howard-Winnesheik School District. While living in Cresco, she was also active in the Elm Street Singers and the United Methodist Church.

Kathy was united in marriage to Kent H. Juffer on April 26, 1982, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant by the Rev. Wayne Wasta. With the addition of their first daughter to the family in 1985, Kathy decided that she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. Family was always Kathy's first priority and she dedicated her life to that purpose.

Kathy's biggest joy in life was the time she spent raising their two daughters, Megan and Katie. The girls have many fond memories of the time she spent helping them on school work and after-school activities. She was always there for them with words of encouragement and advice. Kathy loved to travel with her family, with her favorite place being Bodega Bay, Calif. Kathy had a special love of music and enjoyed playing the piano and singing.

Kathy was a wonderful mother and wife. She was always happy to help her friends. Unfortunately, her illness, which started in 2001, robbed her of some of the qualities that we all knew made her special. Even though she knew something was wrong, she didn't let it stop her from enjoying life and her family and friends.
She entered the memory unit at Good Shepherd in April 2009. The family is grateful to all the nurses and care staff of the unit for their compassion and care during her time there.

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Kent, and their two daughters, Megan of New York, N.Y., and Katie of Mason City; brother-in-law, Kirk Juffer and his wife, Sonja, of Shorewood, Wis.; sister-in-law, Jennifer Juffer of Red Granite, Wis., sister-in-law, Sheila Clark of Pierre, S.D.; mother-in-law, Mary Jane Juffer of Plano, Texas; nieces, Gudrun and Helen Juffer of Shorewood, Wis.; nephews, Gus Juffer of Madison, Wis., Aaron Clark of Pierre, S.D., and Matthew Clark of Savage, Minn., and a special cousin, Larry Fraser, and his wife, Connie, of Hutchinson, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Karen; and a brother, Kenny.
