Corrine Deninger "Connie"

BRANSON, Mo. - Corrine "Connie" Deninger, 69, of Branson, Mo., and a Manly, Iowa, resident from 1969 to 1996, died peacefully from complications of lung cancer Saturday (Nov. 28, 2009) at her home. She was surrounded by her loving family and her partner, Walter Elliott.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 708 State Highway 248, Branson, Mo., with Chaplain Mary Helen Jeruzal officiating.

Connie's final wishes were to be cremated; her cremains will be interred in spring 2010 with her mother and family in the family plot at Prairie Island Public Cemetery in Red Wing, Minn.

Corrine Marie Steinbruckner was born on Oct. 3, 1940, in St. Paul, Minn., to Joseph and Catherine (Kuhns) Steinbruckner. The family lived in St. Paul until 1944, then moved to Kansas City, Mo. Later they moved to Yellville, Ark. In 1950, her father was killed in a logging accident there; Catherine's uncles Abe and Fuller Kuhns, lifelong Mississippi River commercial fishermen, brought her and her four young children to live with them on Prairie Island near Red Wing.

Connie graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1958 and moved to St. Paul, Minn. There she met Jerry Deninger of Manly. They wed on June 17, 1961, in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and moved to Manly in 1969.

While raising her children in the 1970s, Connie worked at Tom's Furniture in Manly. In 1977, she attended and graduated from La James School of Cosmetology in Mason City, Iowa, and was named 1977 Student of the Year. She opened The Hair Forum salon in her home in Manly and became a community fixture, serving customers young and old for 19 years.

Connie was an exceptional hair stylist and always could be counted on to open early or stay late if customers needed. She helped customers with cancer look their best by styling their wigs. She also helped several on their final journeys by working with Bride Colonial Chapel and styling their hair after their deaths.

In 1996, Connie retired from cosmetology as Jerry retired from the Iowa Northern Railroad, and they moved to Branson, Mo. Connie began working as an usher at Yakov Smirnoff's Theater. With her business skills and customer focus, she was promoted and eventually became theater general manager, overseeing its general business; gift shop; concessions; and marketing.

She retired from the theater in December 2008 and was looking forward to traveling and new adventures.

In her spare time, Connie enjoyed sight-seeing and visiting casinos, resorts and wineries. She kept a beautiful, inviting home where she and Walt enjoyed entertaining friends and special guests.

Connie is survived by three children, Lynn (Dennis) Lawson, of Anderson, Ind.; Patrick (Jeri) Deninger, of Trempealeau, Wis.; and Mary Beth (Michael) Kritenbrink, of Centennial, Colo.; five grandchildren, Matt Christian of Indianapolis, Ind., T.J. Christian of Anderson, Ind., and Cassie Christian of Phoenix, Ariz., Gregory Kritenbrink of Lincoln, Neb., and Maleah Kritenbrink of Centennial, Colo.

She also is survived by a sister, Jolene Steiner, of Springfield, Mo.; a brother, David Steinbruckner of Big Fork, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three infant children: Julie, Jerrold and Joseph; Jerry Deninger; her sister Margaret Auger; and Bo, the beloved family dog.

Because of the extraordinary care Connie received from the Branson-area Hospice Compassus organization, Connie's family encourages memorials to the Community Hospices of America Foundation, or to her favorite local charity, the Women's Crisis Center of Taney County, P.O. Box 282, Branson, MO 65615.

Vaselecula Mitrovgenis " Kula"
6-18-1918 to 11-27-2009

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -Vaselecula "Kula" Mitrovgenis of Oklahoma City, Okla., died Friday (Nov. 27, 2009) at the age of 91 in Shreveport, La., while visiting with relatives over the Thanksgiving holiday.

For many years, Kula spent time visiting her twin sister, Tula; sister Christina and other family members in Mason City.

Other survivors include sisters, Tula Zanios and Christina Karrant, both of Mason City; sister-in-law, Mary Karrant, Little Rock, Ark., and sister-in-law, Mary Karrant, Lawton, Okla. She also has two step-grandchildren, Erhard Brewer and April Brewer, and a step-great-granchild, Ashton, who she loved very much. She also has numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 5, 2009) at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski and the Rev. Basil Hickman, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Friday, at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W. Mason City, where a Trisagion prayer service will be held at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Betty Hasapopoulos Memorial Fund, (2831 4th St. N.W., Mason City, IA. 50401) to benefit the following not-for-profit organizations: Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Orthodox Christian Mission Center, Faith Works, and Amnesty International.

Born June 29, 1927, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Arthur Hugh Spur and Hazel (Shaffer) de St Paer. She married Pete Hasapopoulos on Dec. 14, 1947, in Mason City, Iowa, where she continued to reside.

Growing up on a farm surrounded by nature, music, literature and community service, Mrs. Hasapopoulos' life followed a path in those areas. She served as President of the League of Women Voters, Mason City Friends of the Library, Church Women United and Philoptochos.

Additionally, she was involved in Community Kitchen, Migrant Action Program, was a nursing home program advocate, a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. Active in the Greek Orthodox Church, she was organist for over 50 years and co-founder of the Sunday School program as well as having spent endless hours working on church functions and fund raisers.

Music being her passion, her career took off when, at the age of 4, she performed for the community of Larrabee, Iowa, an unforgettable rendition of "I Love You Truly." Years later she pursued her musical training by attending Morningside College in Sioux City studying piano continuing as a teacher and accompanist until recently. Not only did she write music for friends and family but her composition won first place at the local St. Cecilia competition. She also co-wrote a musical that was performed on tour for ACT of New Mexico.

As a granddaughter of a prominent 18th century French newspaper editor who penned inflammatory political views, Mrs. Hasapopoulos was proud of her lineage that subsequently fled to the Isle of Jersey in Great Britain. As a first generation American, she cherished her many adventurous visits to cousins at the Old Rectory in England roaming country roads and discussing history over a cup of tea and biscuits.

She also traveled to visit her late husband's extended family in Greece with her children several times.

She will be remembered by many, but especially her children, as the curator of basement theatres, Halloween haunted houses, spirited family gatherings, and a wonderfully artistic environment. But mostly she will live in our hearts for her compassion, kindness, selflessness and unending love.

She is survived by her four children, Cristine Montealvo, of Clear Lake, Constance (Kevin) Hasapopoulos Suter, of San Francisco, Calif., Irene (Michael) Jaureguy, of Turlock, Calif., and Peter Hasapopoulos, of Escondido, Calif.; grandchildren, Father Basil, Shannon Peter, Kirsten, Lilia, Louisa, Delphine, Joseph, James, Peter, Yanni, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Giancarlo; great-grandchildren, Christina, Aleka, Aaron, Evelyn, Alex, Anna, Angelina, and Naiara.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Hasapopoulos; a brother, Arthur; and granddaughter, Sophia Suter.
