Rama L. DeWitt

MASON CITY - Loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Rama L. DeWitt, age 83, of Mason City died Friday (Dec. 4, 2009) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiating. Interment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
Memorials may be directed to the Rama DeWitt Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Rama was born on Nov. 8, 1926, in rural Kirksville, Mo., the daughter of Arthur and Erma (Loyd) True. Rama moved to Mason City at an early age and attended school in Mason City. She married Hubert Moretz on July 10, 1946, in Pipestone, Minn., and later married Francis DeWitt on Nov. 1, 1952, in Albert Lea, Minn. Rama worked for Ben Franklin and Wal-Mart before retiring in 1992. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Church Circle. Rama enjoyed spending time with her family, walking, reading, traveling and eating ice cream.

Rama is survived by her children, Sherry Despenas of Roseville, Minn., Les Weitzel and fiancée, Billie Kellogg, of Mason City, Kim DeWitt and wife, Theresa, of Mason City, Cheryl Allen of Santa Rosa, Calif., Donald DeWitt and wife, Patricia, of Mason City; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Genevive Weitzel of Mason City, Mary Johnson and husband, Floyd, of Mason City, Pat Bickley of Mason City, Gordy True and wife, Karen, of Mason City, Larry True and Sharron Holtz of Phoenix, Ariz., Sandy Weaver of Mason City. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hubert Moretz, in 1950 and her second husband, Francis DeWitt, in 2005; her parents, Arthur and Erma True; her children, Terry Smith, Darrel DeWitt and Dennis DeWitt; and two brothers, Don and Eldon True.

Jean J. Erickson

 

MASON CITY - Jean J. Erickson, 81, of 704 S. Kentucky Ave., died Friday (Dec. 4, 2009) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. James Magelssen officiating. Private family inurnment services will take place in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given to Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank.

Jean was born Dec. 30, 1927, in Manly, the daughter of Wayne D. and Arlene H. (Jirsa) Radcliff. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1945. Following graduation, Jean moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the Army Corps of Engineers at the Pentagon. She returned to Mason City where she worked for Mier Wolf Furniture Store. Jean met her future husband, Gailerd, while working there. Jean and Gailerd were married June 10, 1947, in Mason City. Jean was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Women of Trinity. She was past president of Toastmistresses, enjoyed playing bridge, reading, spending time with her children and grandchildren and was a volunteer at Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank for 25 years.

Jean is survived by her husband, Gailerd E. Erickson, of Mason City; sons, Gary (Rita) Erickson of West Des Moines, Dennis (Nancy) Erickson of Mason City; daughter, Deanna (Kevin) Boehmer of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Heather Rinderknecht, Mandelin Rowland, Crystal Egland, Rachel Erickson, Brenda Dorenkamp, Cole and Claire Boehmer; seven great-grandchildren; niece, Debbie (Willie) Scott of Mason City; brothers, Dale (Iona) Radcliff of Mason City, Cecil (Arleen) Radcliffe of Clear Lake, sisters-in-law, Michiko Radcliff of Bloomington, Minn., Lauretta Radcliff of Minneapolis, Minn.; numerous other nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Harold, Rodney, Kenneth and William.

Loren Wallace Hahle

MASON CITY - Loren Wallace Hahle, 72, of Algona, died Friday morning (Dec. 4, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with the Father Ed Girres and the Rev. Mr. Robert Larsen officiating. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Algona.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., both today, at the funeral home.

Loren Wallace Hahle was born Oct. 29, 1937, at Algona, to George and Rose (Steil) Hahle. Loren graduated from St. Cecelia Academy in Algona and on Sept. 21, 1959, was married to Sharon Fox in Livermore.
Loren and Sharon owned a dry cleaning business in Algona, but Loren spent most of his working years at Snap-On Tools.

Loren was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed attending home games whenever possible. He enjoyed watching all football on television, enjoyed doing yard work and gardening, but his greatest love was spending time with his family and grandchildren. His new great-grandson was the sparkle in his eye.
Loren was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of Algona; his children, Vienna Hahle of Emmetsburg, Cathy Vitzthum of Hastings, Minn., Angela Hahle of Emmetsburg, Loren W. Hahle Jr. and wife, Michele, of Mason City, and Tera Hahle of Apple Valley, Minn.; as well as six grandchildren, Jennifer Vitzthum, Gabrielle Vitzthum, Jacob Vitzthum, Coltin Hahle, Catalyn Hahle, Shea Hahle and one great-grandson Aiden.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents.

NORA SPRINGS - Marcus Hermann, 91, formerly of Rockford and Marble Rock, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 2009) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Ave. N.W., Rockford, with the Father Jim Dubert as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Elry Armond Wolff

Elry died Friday (Dec. 4, 2009) at his home.

Elry Armond Wolff was born on Oct. 28, 1926, at home in rural Gordonsville, the son of Werner and Renetta (Virchow) Wolff. He attended country schools in rural Myrtle and Gordonsville. On Sept. 28, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lois Heideman at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle, Minn. The couple made their home in the rural Glenville area. Elry was a life long farmer and in the early 1970s he and Lois also owned and operated the Glenville Grocery Store. Elry was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he had served as a trustee. He had also served on the Shellrock Township Board. Elry loved farming and his family. He had a warm smile and would talk "farming" with anyone. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his daughter, Valerie, and husband, Clark Cipra, of Austin, Minn.; grandchildren, Brian Cipra of White Bear Lake and Suzanne and husband, Todd Haag, of Rockford; great-grandchildren, Jack Cipra and Reese Haag; sister, Marvelyn and husband, Bill Hoyt, of San Diego, Calif.; aunt, Luetta Wolff; sisters-in-law, Eunice Anderson of Albert Lea and Annie Heideman of Glenville; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Elry was preceded in death by his parents, Werner and Renetta Wolff; stepmother, Martha Wolff; wife, Lois, in 2000; son, Stuart, in 1974; sister, Loretta, and husband, Norman Fredrickson; brother, Harold, and wife, Agnes Wolff; sister, Arlene, and husband, Roy Baumunk; brothers-in-law, Clair Anderson and Harlan Heideman; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Helen Amundson; mother and father-in-law, Herman and Grace Heideman.

Marcus Hermann

 
NORA SPRINGS - Marcus Hermann, 91, formerly of Rockford and Marble Rock, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 2009) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Marcus was born in rural Marble Rock, on Feb. 19, 1918, the son of John and Louise (Vala) Hermann. He grew up in the Marble Rock/Roseville area, where he farmed. In March of 1941, he was inducted into the Army, completing his training in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. He was among the first group of Americans that entered World War II. As part of the 34th Division, 168th Infantry, Headquarters Company, he served his country in Algeria, Tunisia and Italy. Marcus was honorably discharged in June of 1945, achieving the rank of tech sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Anna Mae Crahan on Jan. 20, 1948, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. In 1966, Marcus opened up his own repair shop in Marble Rock, Hermann Repair. At the age of 50, he began drag racing, a hobby which he would compete in until he was 72! In 1973, his son, would join him in the repair business. They continued to work together until Marcus' retirement in 1984.

Anna Mae and Marcus moved to Rockford in 1999 and would continue to live there until 2005 when Marcus moved to the care center in Nora Springs.

Marcus was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus and was very active in the Marble Rock American Legion Post No. 387. He attended many Army reunions and participated in many parades during his lifetime. He also enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors and was very proud of his B and G tractors. Most of all, Marcus loved spending time with his family.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Anna Mae; sons, Bill (Pam) Hermann of Rockford and Joe (Karen) Hermann of State Center; grandchildren, Jeff (Angie) Hermann, Brian (Tonya) Hermann and Rob Hermann; great grandchildren, Noel and Derrick Marzen, Colbie Johnson and Carter and Bailey Hermann; and sisters, Mary (Leonard) Greiner of Iowa Falls and Margaret Hermann of Rochester, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Floyd William Bochmann

AREDALE - Funeral services for Floyd William Bochmann, 96, of Aredale, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church in Aredale, with the Rev. Larry Pauley officiating. Burial will take place at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.

Floyd William Bochmann died Sunday (Dec. 6, 2009) at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.

He was born on March 28, 1913, in rural Greene, to Otto and Maria (Kramer) Bochmann. Floyd was valedictorian of his graduating class at Aredale High School and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

He married Audrey McWilliams on June 19, 1938, in Aredale, Iowa. Floyd farmed in the Hansell and Aredale areas from 1940 until 1970 and then worked in the bank in Aredale from 1971 until 1988.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Aredale. His church and his community were very important to him. He served in numerous capacities in the United Methodist Church, both locally and at the district level.

He was president of the Aredale State Bank and also served on the board of directors for the Rockwell Cooperative Telephone Association and the Aredale Store. He was Aredale's town clerk for many years, serving until he moved to an assisted living facility in Mason City in 2000. Even after retiring for the second time at age 75, he refused to take it easy.

His favorite hobbies were tearing down old buildings and cutting down trees. He also loved singing. He was a member of the church choir his entire adult life, often times carrying the tenor section by himself. He enjoyed participating in small groups and cantatas and sang many solos. His last solo in church was at Grace United Methodist in Mason City at the age of 91.

Floyd is survived by his daughter, Avis (Adriel) Thrash, of North Canton, Ohio; son, Max Bochmann of Naperville, Ill.; daughter, Belva (Gregory) Sheriff of Dougherty; grandchildren, Wendy (Tom) Martens, of North Canton, Ohio; Todd (Marjorie) Thrash, of Williamsburg, Va.; Adam Bochmann of Naperville, Ill.; Holly (Matthew) Fagen, of Des Moines; Rachel (Shane) DeWalle, of Marion; Collin Sheriff and fiancee, Jenna Busch, of Phoenix, Ariz,; great-grandchildren, Logan and Evan Martens; Carter and Miles Thrash; Samantha Bochmann; Devon Simmer; Madden DeWalle; Keelee and Parker Sheriff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Audrey; brothers, Emrose Bochmann and Victor Bochmann; and daughter-in-law, Christine Bochmann.

Harriet E. Main

MASON CITY -Harriet E. Main, 88, of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 3, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Harriet Main Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Harriet was born on Oct. 18, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Horace and Ida (Kline) Johnson. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939 and later graduated from the University of Minnesota.

Harriet was in the Navy Nurse Corps from October 1944 until July 1946.

She married Norman F. Main on Jan. 1, 1949, in Minneapolis. The Mains moved to Mason City in 1952. Harriet worked as a Nurse.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she participated in many church activities: Bell Choir, Lydia Church Circle, quilting and communion visitor for senior adults,and she was a member of the Mason City Women's Club and Lioness Club.

She enjoyed playing bridge, reading and going to NIACC concerts with her friends.

Harriet is survived by her son, Richard (Audrey) Main, of Buena Park, Calif.; daughter, Susan (George) Hansen, of Fremont, Neb.; grandchildren, Jessica and Scott Main, Kari Follmuth, Eric and Travis Hansen; great-grandchildren, Emily and Alex; one brother: Walter Johnson and wife, Geneva, of Minneapolis.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Norman, in 2008; and her parents.

Marvin R. Nelson

 

AURORA, Colo. – Marvin R. Nelson passed away Friday (Dec. 4, 2009) at his home in Aurora, Colo., surrounded by his family.

Marvin was born on Aug. 29, 1926, on his parents' farm near Thornton, Iowa. He was the eldest child of Clarence A. Nelson and Rose (Bessie Nicolet) Nelson. His elementary schooling was at Cerro Gordo County School District and he graduated from Thornton High School in 1944, as salutatorian of his class.

After farming for a couple of years, Marvin was drafted into the Army, where he served a year in Japan. In the fall of 1947, he entered Mason City Junior College for two years, transferring to Drake University in the fall of 1949. Marvin started in the Actuarial Program and joined the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and graduated in 1951.

During this time, Marvin met and fell in love with Juanita Mae Brown, and after a years courtship, they married in 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa.

They started their married life in Lincoln, Neb., where Marvin started working for Security Mutual Life Insurance Co. Shortly after that, they had their first child, Nancy.

In 1958, his career took the family to Philadelphia, where he worked for Life Insurance Company of North America. The family returned to Lincoln where Marvin went to work for Bankers Life of Nebraska. He earned his Fellowship to the Society of Actuaries in 1960. The following year he was blessed with a son, Kenneth.

In 1966, his career took the family to St Paul, Minn., where he worked for Mutual Service Insurance Company of St Paul. He later accepted an actuarial position with the Horace Mann Insurance Group in Springfield, Ill., where he became a senior vice president.

In 1977, he accepted a senior vice president position with Security Life of Denver. Five years later, he was transferred to the presidency position at Midwestern Life Insurance of Fort Wayne, Ind. Several years later, he returned to Security Life of Denver and retired in 1991.

Marvin always had the "farm boy" in him. During his lifetime, he purchased several farms and one ranch. He also enjoyed fishing, travel, bridge, boating and spending time with his family at the "Father's Folly" family retreat in the mountains.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and brothers.

He is survived by his wife Juanita "Jonnie"; his daughter, Nancy, of Parker Colo.; and his son, Kenneth, of Thornton Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6601 S. Colorado Blvd., Littleton CO., 80121. Interment to follow memorial service at Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Shalom Park.

Helen Margaret Anderson

CLEAR LAKE - Helen Margaret Anderson, 94, 400 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Dec. 8, 2009) at Oakwood Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at Clear Lake Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with Pastor Scott Wilson officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Helen was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Dayton, Texas, the daughter of Chauncey and Alice (Eyestone) Merwin. They moved to Des Moines in her teens and to Clear Lake in the mid-1930s. Helen married James S. Anderson Jr. on Nov. 29, 1942, at the Christian Church, Clear Lake.

Helen tutored numerous students in math, Sunday school and taught vacation Bible school. She loved to work word puzzles, was an excellent seamstress and taught herself to knit. She loved to sing, especially the old hymns. She was an avid sports fan, especially going to baseball and basketball games where she was known for her loud whistling.

Helen attended the Christian Church and was a member of the Mother's Study Club.

Helen is survived by two children, Sally Anderson, St. Paul, Minn., and Don Anderson, Belle Plaine; seven sisters; two brothers and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband (in 1984); two sisters and three brothers.

John D. Richard 

FERTILE - John D. Richardson, 70, of Plymouth, formerly of Fertile, died Monday (Dec. 7, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral mass for John will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway in Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

John D. Richardson was born Oct. 18, 1939, in Shambaugh, the son of Donald Arthur and Mable Clair (Houston) Richardson. John attended grade school in Shambaugh and graduated from Amity High School in 1958.

John was inducted into the Army in 1964 and spent most of his military enlistment in Staten Island, N.Y., until his honorable discharge in 1966. After his discharge he traveled to Alaska with an Army buddy and worked at Clear Air Force Base from July 1966 until 1967.

John moved to Shambaugh and worked for Hull and Hale Implement before moving back to Alaska in January 1970.

John was hired at the Air Force base in 1970, and he spent the next 23 years working as a teamster until his retirement moving to Forsyth, Mo., where he had purchased an acreage a few years before. In August 1993, he sold his acreage in Forsyth and bought an acreage near Garrison, Mo., where he started raising miniature horses and standard size donkeys and pygmy goats.

In 1997, he met and fell in love with his wife, Shirley Jean (Aguilera) and was united in marriage on Aug. 30, 1997, in Eureka Springs, Ark.

In 2000, they sold their acreage in Garrison and moved with their horses and donkeys to a rented place near Hanlontown and soon afterward, they purchased an acreage with several outbuildings and 20 acres near Fertile, where they continued raising miniature horses and switched from standard donkeys to registered miniature donkeys and also raising pygmy goats.

He enjoyed going to auctions, flea markets, antiques, old cars and tractors, and telling and hearing jokes, but his great love and enjoyment was his wife Shirley and his family.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, former Lions Club and Knights of Columbus member, and was a former Cub and Boy Scout leader.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley Richardson of Plymouth; his children, Don (Joetta) Richardson of Oregon, Mo., Teresa Hennigar of Hanlontown, Roger (Tracy) Hennigar, of Hanlontown, Ramona (Sheldon) Torkelson of Kasson, Minn., Sonja (Kent) Hardwick of Medford Lakes, N.J., JD (Pauline) Richardson of St. Michael, Alaska, and Rhonda Richardson, of Newport News, Va.; 24 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Wilda McClarnon, of Clarinda; two brothers, Jerry Richardson of Clarinda and Leonard "Bub" (Sherry) Richardson of College Springs; a brother-in-law, Dave VanFosson of Forsyth, Mo., as well as many other extended family members and friends.

His parents, and a sister, Elma VanFosson, preceded him in death.

Raymond A. Turner

 

FOREST CITY - Raymond A. Turner, 91, of Forest City died Saturday (Dec. 5, 2009) at his home in Forest City.

Raymond Alfred Turner was born Jan. 6, 1918, in Elkader, the son of Jesse Byron and Fanny Laura (Crowe) Turner. He graduated from high school and junior college in Elkader.

Ray married Lois M. Becvar on Sept. 13, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo. Ray served as a supply sergeant in the Army field artillery during World War II, both in the United States and in Germany.

Ray was an Iowa State park ranger from March 1950 to January 1980, serving at Pammel in Winterset, Lake of Three Fires in Bedford, Ledges in Boone, Backbone in Strawberry Point, Viking Lake in Stanton, and Pilot Knob in Forest City. Ray received many awards and commendations during his years of service.

Ray was loved and will be missed by his wife of 68 years, Lois; and his family, daughter, Karen Engebretson (Eugene) of Minneapolis, Minn.; sons, Ray Allan (Peggy) of Rockwell City, Loren (Lisa) of Jefferson, Daryl (GayLynn) of Iron River, Wis., and Alan of Palatka, Fla.; grandchildren, David and Steven Engebretson, Michael Lauritsen, Jennifer Utley, Kevin Turner, Chase and Paige Turner; and great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Joshua Engebretson, Zachary, Caleb and Abigail Utley, Mikayla Lauritsen, and Dimitry Eresov; and great-great-granddaughter, McKenzie Eresov.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 11 brothers and sisters, and an infant daughter.
