Davis, Doris G.

Mason City - Doris G. Davis, 83, of 410 26th St. S.W., Mason City, died Monday evening (Oct. 27, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Ed Bard officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Condolences may be shared with the family on the funeral home Web site at www.Fullertonfh.com.

Doris was a daughter of Dirk and Kate (Ysker) Ebbenga, who were German immigrants. She had seven brothers and sisters. She was the last of her family. Doris was born near Butterfield, Minn., on July 29, 1925. Mrs. Miller was the midwife when she was born.

She went to Watonwon County Schools. She completed the eighth grade.

She worked out as a hired girl before she came to Mason City at age 16. Here she lived with her sister, Fannie, and her children before she got an apartment. She worked at the "Over the Top" restaurant. She went to work at Decker's at age 17. By the time she sent for and received her birth certificate she was 18, finally legally old enough to work at Decker's. She also worked at the Sugar Beet Plant evenings along with Richard.

She married Richard W. Davis on Dec. 1, 1944. She met him at the roller skating rink. She was often quoted as saying she tripped him and he fell for her. They liked to go to dances as well as roller skate. They started their marriage living on Second Street in Mason City with Richard's mother. To this marriage were born three children, Judith (Ron) Colby of Bellevue, Neb., Jolene (Jim) Fank of Mason City and Donald R. Davis (deceased).

Doris was a stay-at-home mom when the kids were young. She was also Richard's best helper. She worked alongside him with almost all of his building. She did all the painting and woodwork finishing. She always bought "store bought" sweet rolls when Richard did cement work. Other than that she made everything from scratch. She made bread dough when Richard was plowing snow. She let us have half the dough. We fried the dough and put sugar on it calling them, "Fimpa-Limpas." She made the most incredible apple crisp and shared the recipe with her family.

When her children got older she went to work at Mode-O-Day. She got fired after six months. She said she thanked the boss (she didn't like sewing anyway). She worked at State Brand Creamery for two months and candled eggs at a hatchery one summer. She brought home baby chickens, one for each of us and one for each of the neighbor kids, who were most always at our house. We kept them until they started crowing. After that we took them to Mom's sister, Katie's farm. Mom will also be remembered for loading the car with neighbor kids and taking us to the drive in theater on Thursday night, which was buck night.

She later went back to Decker/Armour for about 15 years. She retired in 1983 when the Armour plant closed.

Doris and Richard traveled some when they were first retired. They made some trips to Texas and Florida and to see Mom's sister, Alice in California. They spent a couple of winters in Texas.

She really enjoyed the grandkids, James Fank of Mason City, Jeff (Monique) Colby of Omaha, Neb.; Amy (Brian) Reim of Yutan, Neb., and Elizabeth Fank of Olathe, Kan.

They took Judy's family to Circus World and got to be a part of a commercial. They took Jolene's kids to the Cattle Congress and the whole family to Disney World.

She had collected boxes of crochet patterns to do when she retired, but was unable to do many because it caused stress in her neck. She did embroider many pillow cases, crochet doilies and boxes of what the grandkids called elf slippers.

She spent her last few years being Donald's caregiver and Richard's caregiver. She did have a really bright spot this past year when she got to be great-grandma to Jeff's daughter, Ila Kensley Colby.

She and James spent most of the past years keeping Richard busy. She really liked to go out to eat on the weekends.

She died like she lived, quietly and in her own time.

Bergan, Larry J.

MASON CITY - Larry J. Bergan, 66, of 1719 Springview Drive, Mason City, died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2008) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St.N.E. in Mason City, with Father Kenneth Gehling officiating. Casual dress is suggested and blue jeans are encouraged.

Visitation will be held one hour before the service and also Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the chapel. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Larry Joseph Bergan was born Oct. 16, 1942, in Mason City, the son of Lloyd and Lila (Behm) Bergan. He graduated in 1961 from Mason City High School. He was a member of the Naval Reserve and served his active duty right after high school. Later, he joined the Iowa National Guard where he served for several years.

Larry married Suzanne (Sue Fisher) Bergan on July 24, 1965. They lived for several years in the highlands area of Mason City. Then in 1978 Larry fulfilled a dream by moving his family to an acreage south of Fertile. After living there for about 10 years, Sue finally talked him into moving back to their current home.

He worked at Marshall & Swift, Deckers and Lehigh Cement, retiring from Lehigh after 26 years in 2003 for health reasons.

Larry loved the land and his family and enjoyed taking great care of both. He spent much time on his beautiful yard and gardens. He enjoyed wandering through antique stores and going to auctions where the frugal Norwegian would actually part with his hard-earned cash. He enjoyed wheeling and dealing and the thrill of a good buy. Though, if he truly wanted a particular item (piano rolls), he just upped the bid rather than waste time dickering because he "needed" that (end of story). What a contradiction he could be! He was quite an avid Jewel Tea collector.

Larry occasionally spoiled his wife with jewelry, but recently learned to visit pawn shops after his sisters-in-law took Sue on an "adventure" and returned adorned with their treasured and reasonably purchased sparklies. He decided after much skepticism that maybe they were on to something there.

Larry and Sue were limited in retirement travels, as Larry had been on dialysis every other day for about 3 years. They had however become members of the "Senior" Breakfast Club at LD's Filling Station (620 12th St. N.E.) so that is where fittingly the after service gathering will be held. Please feel free to stop by after 2:30 p.m. if you are unable to attend the service.

Dialysis requires limited fluid intake, so please raise a Pepsi, or a cup of coffee, as Larry is upstairs now, drinkin' one or the other. He's there, smilin' and toastin' right back at ya, havin' a second one just cuz he can!!!

Those happy to have shared and known Larry are his wife of 43 years, Sue; one son, Larry Jr. and wife, (daughter-by-marriage) Becky, and their three sons, Alex, Jake and Sam of Hanlontown; granddaughter, Jessica Bachman of Fletcher, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Jan Bergan and Vicki Fisher of Mason City, Pam Fisher of Maplewood, Minn.; bothers-in-law, Steve Fisher and wife, Nancy, of Hanlontown, Jim Fisher and wife, Marcia, of Davenport, Dennis Haaland of Mason City and David Skellenger of Garner; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Glen Lloyd, Richard and James; and parents-in-law, Charles and Lulu Fisher.
