CLEAR LAKE - Richard C. Dunn, 77, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (May 18, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, following a short but brave battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake VFW.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, May 21, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

The family of Richard C. Dunn kindly requests those wishing to give a memorial direct them to the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit or to the Richard C. Dunn Memorial Fund in care of his family.

Dick was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Marshalltown, and lived near St. Anthony. He attended various schools in Marshall County, graduating in 1948 from St. Mary's High School in Marshalltown. He continued his education at Loras College, Dubuque, and the University of Iowa and in 1952 was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He served in Korea as a sergeant first class with the 25th Tropic Fighting Division. Upon discharge, he worked for GMAC and for many years as a district manager for Allis Chalmers. He later owned his own insurance agency until his retirement in 1994. In his retirement years he ran his own bail bonding business.

Richard served on the Clear Lake All Vets golf board for 21 years, six of them as president. He was a life member of the VFW, and a long-time member and past president of the Clear Lake Noon Lions. While a Lion, he was honored with the Warren Coleman fellowship for community service. He always looked forward to serving as the Lions "bean chairman" at their annual summer barbeque.

Dick enjoyed many things in his life including boating on Clear Lake, his daily golf game with his buddies, "making the rounds" about town on his scooter, Friday nights at the VFW "The Club" and traveling to Orange Beach, Ala., during the winter months.

He loved to travel and he and Shirley took many wonderful trips around the world in addition to the family vacations that created many lasting memories. One of his favorite pastimes was reading and he was found many evenings relaxing in his favorite easy chair with a book in one hand while he listened to his favorite Broadway music show tunes playing in the background.

He was blessed with 51 years of marriage to his hometown sweetheart, Shirley, who was the love of his life.

He is survived by her and their six daughters and their husbands: Pam (Mark) Floy of Le Mars, and their three children, Ryan, Andrew and Samantha; Sue (Tom) Hendricks of Clear Lake and their children, James and Megan; Lori (Stephen) Williams of Sierra Madre, Calif., and Kelton and Bennett; Le Ann (Mark) Hewitt of Clear Lake and their children, Rachel, Libby and Lauren; Sara (John) Barten of West Des Moines and their children, Claire, Max and Luke; and Amy (John) Finstad of West Des Moines and their children, Will, Jack and Lily. Dick is survived by one brother, Denny (Mary Fran) Dunn of Burbank, Calif.; two sisters, Pat (Russ) King of Little Rock, Ark., and Mary Jo Becker of New Prague, Minn., and a brother-in-law, Denny Carroll, Frederick, Md.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Monica Carroll; a brother, David, in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Paul Becker.

Erickson, Helen  
 
THOMPSON - Helen Erickson, 92, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2008) in Lake Mills.

Her memorial ceremony will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Wayne Halvorson and Tim Erickson officiating. Inurnment will be at West Prairie Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 26, at Winter Funeral Home in Thompson and one hour before services at the church.

Helen Margaret, daughter of William and Margaret White, was born at Corwith on May 27, 1915, and grew up there and in the Thompson area. She was baptized by the Rev. Paul Yrvisaher.

On May 27, 1931, Helen was united in marriage to Irwin Erickson by the Rev. Paul Yrvisaher at the home of Irwin's grandparents in Thompson. In May 2003, Helen and Irwin celebrated their 72nd Anniversary.

They farmed in the Thompson area and she also worked at Fleetgard and Winnebago.

In October 2001, Helen and Irwin moved to Mills Harbor in Lake Mills. In November 2001, they both became residents of Lake Mills Care Center.

Helen is survived by her three sons and their wives, Eugene and Arla of Thompson, Norman and Beverly of Seeley Lake, Mont., and Robert and Judith of Centennial, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin; her parents; four sisters; four brothers; and a nephew who was raised with her.

CHARLES CITY - Grace Mae (Boggess) Griffin, 95, formerly of 306 S. Joslin St. in Charles City, died Sunday (May 18, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Grace's service Friday at the church.

Grace Mae (Boggess) Griffin, the daughter of Calvin Sr. and Mabel (Frazee) Boggess was born on March 14, 1913, in rural Bassett. She received her education at the Deerfield No. 9 School and graduated from the Colwell High School on May 18, 1934.

On July 10, 1935, Grace was united in marriage to Alfred D. Griffin at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Mrs. Griffin was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to bake goodies, embroidery, make quilts and enjoyed going fishing with her husband, Alfred. Grace worked at the Checkerboard Caf� and she was a nurses aide at the De Buehr Nursing Home, both in Charles City.

Grace had been a homemaker most all of her life. She took great pride in providing for her family and being a nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was very family oriented and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and St. Jude's Circle.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Grace's life are her two children, Theresa M. "Terri" (George) Laubscher of Charles City and Bernard A. (Irene) Griffin of Ankeny; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude "Gertie" Houser of New Hampton, and Maebelle Stelzer of Charles City, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Grace in death are her parents; her husband Alfred D. Griffin in 1994; one son, Eugene Griffin, in 1995; daughter-in-law, Pearl Griffin, in 2002; eight brothers; two sisters and a grandson, David Kriz.

RUDD - Leila Dorothy Kerchner, 93, died Monday (May 19, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 Sixth St. in Rudd, with the Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Rudd Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, May 21, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, and continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Leila D. Kerchner Memorial Fund or Hospice of North Iowa.

Leila Dorothy Baker was born July 9, 1914, in Ida Grove, the daughter of Alpha and Elizabeth (Haefner) Baker. Leila attended rural school in Ida County. After school, she moved to Illinois where she lived with her Aunt Kate. Leila was united in marriage to Andrew H. "Dutch" Kerchner on Jan. 7, 1937, at the home of her Aunt Kate; to this union four children were born. Leila and Dutch farmed in Illinois until they moved to Rudd in 1951. In 1967, they moved into town in Rudd where they continued to farm.

Leila enjoyed playing cards, fishing, sewing, gardening, canning, bowling, traveling and taking trips to the casino! She also liked attending her morning coffee group. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends.

She was a member of Eden Presbyterian Church, Rudd, attending Rudd United Methodist Church, Rudd Culture Club and Rudd Community Center.

Leila is survived by her children, Leona Kerchner of Chicago, Ill., Iva Ernst of Mason City, Larry Kerchner of Prescott, Ariz.; daughters-in-law, Deanna (Dennis) Friederich of Charles City, Judy Kerchner of Shelby, Mont.; grandchildren, Anthony Kerchner of Chicago, Ill., Robert (Mandy) Kerchner of Ridgecrest, Calif., Kristi (Mark) Washington of Nora Springs, Pam (Dan) Yegge of Buffalo Center, Andra (John) Gardipee of Shelby, Mont., Eric (Mary) Kerchner of Helena, Mont., Kellie (Tim) Winter of Ankeny, Kathy (Corey) Lunn of Lonsdale, Minn., Kari Kerchner of Maryville, Mo., Steven (Angie) Kerchner of Iowa City; 20 great-grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Alpha and Elizabeth Baker; husband, Andrew "Dutch" Kerchner; son, Daryl Kerchner; and son-in-law, James Ernst.

O'Brion, James "Jim"  
 
OSAGE - James "Jim" O'Brion, 64, of Osage, went to heaven on Tuesday (May 20, 2008), the same day as his Dad's birthday. He passed away at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Jim was born April 8, 1944, at Fort Dodge, to Harry and Willetta (Olson) O'Brion. He grew up in and around Badger and attended a country school, Badger Elementary, in Badger Township 3. Jim attended Fort Dodge High School until the 11th grade. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1964 and received his GED.

On June 12, 1965, he married Norma Rosenquist at Burnside. Jim worked for the Post Office in Shawnee Mission, Kan., and in Fort Dodge. Jim also worked as a meat salesman for Gus Glaser in Fort Dodge and Harker's in LeMars. He then worked as a driver dispatcher at United Van Bus in Minneapolis and Greenfield Trucking in Fort Dodge. Jim and Norma moved to Osage in September 2005, from Milford, where Jim had worked as a broker for Pioneer Transfer Trucking Co.

Jim enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, camping and feeding the birds. He was a member of the VFW in Osage and of the American Legion in Gowrie.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Blossom Hill Cemetery in Badger. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following services at the church.

Jim is survived by his wife, Norma O'Brion, of Osage; his children, Jamie (Harold) Zupon of Coon Rapids, Minn., Patrick (Janet) O'Brion of Minnetonka, Minn., Rachel O'Brion of Coon Rapids, Minn., Kelly (Bill) Carlson of St. Ansgar; and loved by his seven grandchildren, Cody Bebensee, Mitchell and Ally O'Brion, Joel, Addy, Griffin and Drew Carlson; he is also survived by a brother, Tim (Teri) O'Brion of Milford; a sister, Cheryl (Gary) Warren of Mesa, Ariz.; and his beloved dog, Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Chuck O'Brion; and a sister, Linda Kombrink.

HODGENVILLE, Ky.- Sue Bale Scott, 73, of Hodgenville, Ky., died Monday (May 19, 2008) at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville with the Rev. Norm Brock and the Rev. Kelvin Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the South Fork Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on today, May 21, and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Sue and her husband, David, farmed in the Hodgenville area for many years. She professed faith in Christ and was a member of South Fork Baptist Church. She was also an avid University of Kentucky fan.

She is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Merfeld and her husband, Pete, of Mason City; two sons, Kevin Scott and his wife, Nina of Greensburg, Ky., and James David Scott and his wife, Lyda of Hodgenville, Ky.; five grandsons, Daniel, Benjamin and Adam Scott and Greg and Jason Merfeld; a step-grandson, David Vessels; six great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Appleton, Sarah Howard and Nancy Bale, all of Louisville, Ky., and Margaret Caudell of Horse Cave, Ky.; a brother, William Bale of Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Algona - Janice E. Struthers, 62, passed away Sunday (May 18, 2008). She was blessed to spend her last few days at home surrounded by the love and comfort of her family following an aggressive illness with cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, at First United Methodist Church in Algona with the Rev. Mike Orthel officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, May 21, at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, and will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Janice Elaine Struthers was born June 26, 1945, in Algona, the seventh of eight children of Clifford and Lillian (Godfredsen) Ringsdorf.

She grew up in the Algona area graduating from Algona High School in 1963.

Jan was married to Kirk M. Struthers on July 10, 1965, at the First United Methodist Church in Algona.

She worked for seven years as a dental assistant for Dr. Harris.

Upon motherhood, she chose to work various jobs from home while caring for her children, Angi and Todd.

Jan's top priority was her family. She had many talents and hobbies including knitting, crocheting, painting, golfing, reading, sports and games of all kinds.

She was a skilled bridge player competing in professional tournaments.

Jan loved the outdoors, especially spending summer weekends at Lake Okoboji teaching the kids to swim and water-ski.

Jan was involved with all aspects of her family's activities, attending school functions, sporting events and performances.

She loved to take care of the grandkids; telling them stories, teaching them new things, or just keeping in touch to hear about their day.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Kirk Struthers, Algona; two children, Angela (Angi) Bernhard and her husband, Jerry, of Mason City, and Todd Struthers and his wife, Tammy, of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Tanner and Tristan Bernhard of Mason City and Paige and Cade Struthers of Omaha, Neb.; and her mother, Lillian Ringsdorf Porter and her husband, Jack, of Spencer. She is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Jane Blanchard and her husband, Gene, of Spencer, Richard Ringsdorf and his wife, Shirley, of Algona, Sharon Elbert and her husband, Charles, of Mason City, Bonnie Zittritsch and her husband, Ron, of Morton, Ill., Terry Ringsdorf of Omaha, Neb., and Shirley Smith and her husband, Peter, of Birmingham, Ala.; three brothers-in-law, Tom Zittritsch of Spencer, Lee Struthers and his wife, Marjorie of Spirit Lake, and Lynn Struthers and his wife, Barbara, of Foley, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Pauline Struthers of Algona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford Ringsdorf; her sister, Beverly Zittritsch; father-in-law, Dale Struthers, mother-in-law, Sadie Struthers, and a brother-in-law, Ross Struthers.

Tom Martin of Elk Creek Lutheran Church and Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kensett.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. today, May 22, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

The family of Todd Allen Brunsvold has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery, or to the charity of one's choice in his memory.

Todd Allen Brunsvold was born on Oct. 19, 1963, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Donald A. and Margie D. (Reyerson) Brunsvold. Todd attended and received his education in the Northwood-Kensett Community School, graduating from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1982.

After completing his schooling, Todd moved to San Diego, Calif., and worked in construction. Todd also worked for Richard Dahley (Midwest Cable Co.) installing cable TV before forming his own cable company in 1997, named Iowa Communication Co., installing cable throughout the Midwest. In May 1998 Todd became the owner-operator of the Northwood Sanitation Co.

Todd enjoyed taking care of his lawn, snowmobiles, jet skiing, golfing, motorcycles, talking to friends, making deals and helping others.

MASON CITY - Timothy J. Espeland, 46, of Mason City died Monday (May 19, 2008) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Timothy Jon Espeland was born in Forest City on Sept. 15, 1961, the son of Richard and Darlyne (Johnson) Espeland. He received his education in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School in 1979.

Tim attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston, graduating in 1991. He served on the Forest City Police Department and the Mason City Police Department for 16 years. He loved being a cop.

Tim was a big Harley Davidson fan and loved riding his motorcycle. He liked to go scuba diving whenever he could and enjoyed watching "M*A*S*H" on television.

Tim is survived by his parents, Richard and Darlyne Espeland of Forest City; sister, Trudy (Rick) Johnson of Mason City; brothers, Ricky (Michelle) Espeland of Winterset and Steven (Susan) Espeland of Madrid, Iowa; and nine nieces and nephews.

Tim was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

MANLY - LeRoy Donald Helmer, 87, died Monday (May 19, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 815 N. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Roy Weeden officiating. Inurnment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth, with military honors conducted by members of the Edward Tosel Post 110.

LeRoy Donald Helmer was born on April 13, 1921, in rural Plymouth, the son of Irving J. and Tina L. (Arends) Helmer. He graduated from the Plymouth High School. LeRoy served in the United States Army Air Force, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict, later being honorably discharged.

LeRoy was united in marriage to Genevieve "Ginger" Benton in September of 1947. To this union two children were born. LeRoy worked for the Lehigh Cement Plant, later working for the American Crystal Sugar Co., retiring in 1983.

LeRoy enjoyed gardening, playing music, photography, writing poems and surfing the Internet. He had a great love for animals. LeRoy was a member of the American Legion and the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ginger Helmer of Manly; children, Lonnie (Debbie) Helmer of Mason City and Nancy (Terry) Eldridge of Fertile; grandchildren, Lynn Helmer of Hampton, Devon Eldridge of Garner and Christie Helmer of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Eli Eldridge, Renee Helmer and Ryan Helmer; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

OSAGE - James Elwood O'Brion, 64, of Osage went to Heaven on Tuesday (May 20, 2008), the same day as his dad's birthday. He passed away at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Jim was born April 8, 1944, at Fort Dodge to Harry and Willetta (Olson) O'Brion. He grew up in and around Badger, and attended a country school, Badger Elementary, in Badger Township 3. Jim attended Fort Dodge High School until the 11th grade. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964 and received his GED.

On June 12, 1965, he married Norma Rosenquist at Burnside. Jim worked for the Post Office in Shawnee Mission, Kan., and in Fort Dodge. Jim also worked as a meat salesman for Gus Glaser in Fort Dodge and Harker's in LeMars. He then worked as a driver dispatcher at United Van Bus in Minneapolis and Greenfield Trucking in Fort Dodge. Jim and Norma moved to Osage in September 2005 from Milford, where Jim had worked as a broker for Pioneer Transfer Trucking Co.

Jim enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, camping and feeding the birds. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Osage and the American Legion in Gowrie.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 22, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Blossom Hill Cemetery in Badger. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following services at the church.

Jim is survived by his wife, Norma O'Brion of Osage; his children, Jamie (Harold) Zupon of Coon Rapids, Minn., Patrick (Janet) O'Brion of Minnetonka, Minn., Rachel O'Brion of Coon Rapids, Minn., Kelly (Bill) Carlson of St. Ansgar; and loved by his seven grandchildren, Cody Bebensee, Mitchell and Ally O'Brion, Joel, Addy, Griffin, and Drew Carlson. He is also survived by a brother, Tim (Teri) O'Brion of Milford; a sister, Cheryl (Gary) Warren of Mesa, Ariz.; and his beloved dog, Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Chuck O'Brion; and a sister, Linda Kombrink.

ROCKWELL - Leola Marie Rice, 92, formerly of 639 Southview Drive, Rockwell, died Monday evening (May 19, 2008) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, at the Rockwell United Methodist Church, 303 Monroe St., Rockwell, with the Rev. John P. Scherb officiating.

Leola Marie Gerdes Rice was born Dec. 21, 1915, in rural Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of August and Lena (Weers) Gerdes. She graduated from Greeley High School in 1933. On April 17, 1936, she married Carrol Rice at the Methodist Church in Waverly. They moved to Swaledale and farmed there until 1983 when they retired and moved to Rockwell.

Leola enjoyed her family, Bible studies and traveling with her husband. She was an active and devoted member of the Swaledale United Methodist Church, an Iowa Master Farm Homemaker (1977) and was a past 4-H leader.

Many relatives and friends who have shared in her long and full life will dearly miss Leola. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

BELMOND - Julane L. Carolus, 90, of Belmond passed away Tuesday (May 20, 2008) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Julane Lenora, the daughter of Hans and Annie (Quam) Osheim, was born March 2, 1918, in Thompson, one of 14 children. She grew up and attended school in Thompson. Julane was confirmed in the West Prairie Lutheran Church in 1933. Her religion kept her strong throughout her life.

It was while working at her sister's restaurant in Klemme that Julane met Henry Carolus. They were married April 5, 1936, at the Methodist parsonage in Clarion. They were married 69 years until his death in 2003.

The family made their home and farmed in the Galt, Clarion, Garner, and Goodell area. For a period of time, Julane worked at the Belmond Care Center. Following their retirement from farming, they moved to an acreage north of Belmond. In 2000, they moved to the Belmond Retirement Apartments. Julane moved to the Belmond Care Center in 2005 where she made her home until her death.

Julane was an avid Hawkeye fan. She was also a person who kept up with politics and was willing to share her political views with others.

She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, reading, stitching handiwork, playing bingo on Tuesdays at the Care Center, and doing crafts. Cooking was a favorite pastime where she was known especially for her cookies and potato salad.

Julane will be remembered for her positive attitude, always making the best of any situation. She lived with diabetes for 60 years. She had a great sense of humor and was known for her quick wit.

A friend to everyone, Julane had a very caring attitude, helping and serving others even as a resident of the care center where she also served on the senior advisory committee. You never heard Julane complain or say a bad word about anyone. As a devoted wife and mother, her family always came first.

Julane is survived by her sons, Jerry (Jean) of Hampton, and Del (Dorothy) of Parkersburg; daughter Diane (Ron) Dougherty, of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jerilyn (Kole) Kapp, of Rockingham, N.C., Jaci (Mike) Sinclair, of Marshalltown, Jay (Sheila) Carolus, of Oskaloosa, Darin (Nancy) Carolus, of Reno, Nev., Colin (Jenny) Carolus, of Vinton, Grant (Holly) Carolus, of Waterloo, Jen (Joel) Eddleman, of West Des Moines, and Jill (Todd) Sears, of Overland Park, Kan.; 19 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Helmer Osheim, of Lake Mills and Vernon (Lorraine) Osheim, of Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Julane in death were her parents, husband, Henry, in 2005; and great-grandson, Nathan Sinclair on May 1, 2008; as well as her four brothers and seven sisters.

CLEAR LAKE - Beverly "Bev" Motto, 76, of Clear Lake died Wednesday afternoon (May 21, 2008) in her home.

Bev was born Dec. 24, 1931, in Lincoln, Neb., to Laurence and Violet (Carlson) Luther. She attended schools in Lincoln and Omaha, Neb.

Bev married Harold Gamerl in Omaha in 1952 and they had one son, Bruce. She later married Frank Motto and moved to Clear Lake.

Bev was an avid dog lover, especially Pekingese, and showed them in AKC shows. She was a member of the Albert Lea Kennel Club and the North Central Illinois Pekingese Club. Her great-grandson, Dustin Gamerl also belonged to the same dog clubs as Bev, so this made her hobby especially enjoyable.

Another hobby Bev dabbled in was oil painting and at one time even served as treasurer for the Iowa Artists League. She had a flair for cooking special dinners and loved inviting friends over.

Bev leaves behind her loving husband, Frank; son, Bruce (Jody) Gamerl; four Granddaughters, Heather (Paul) Wubben, Dayle Gamerl, Dusty (Josh) Johnson, and Kelly (Stan) Lewis. She also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren.

KLEMME - Ecko Reysack Jr., 68, of Klemme, died Wednesday (May 21, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with the Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St. in Klemme and continue one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.

Ecko Reysack Jr., the son of Ecko and Grace (Menmam) Reysack Sr., was born Nov. 26, 1939, at Packard. He attended Aredale, Iowa, Schools.

Ecko owned and operated his own tiling business in earlier years in the Dumont area. He later was employed with Winnebago Industries for 13 years from 1978-1991.

Ecko was united in marriage to his first wife Janice Haskins for a number of years. He later married Sharon Heginger on July 28, 1978 in Minnehaha, S.D.

Ecko was a very avid outdoorsman who relished each and every opportunity, he had to spend time pursuing his favorite pastimes of hunting and fishing. He loved to hunt a wide variety of game and fish for all types of fish. He took great pleasure in teaching his kids and grandkids to fish and hunt in an effort to share his love and his passion for the outdoors.

He looked forward to family get-togethers around the campfire and camping excursions. He enjoyed car racing and especially looked forward to figure eight races and derby car events.

Ecko could often be seen touring around the Klemme area in his blue pickup and enjoyed his seat in the cab of his truck as he supervised the family in planting the garden or with other tasks. His family will miss Ecko pulling up in the drive or alley and tapping on his pickup horn to let them know he was outside waiting to visit or share the news of the day. Ecko enjoyed following the many activities of his children and grandchildren and looked forward to times spent with his siblings.

ALEXANDER - Gilbert H. Schulte, 66, of Alexander, died unexpectedly Wednesday (May 21, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the First Reformed Church of Alexander, with the Rev. Phillip Arnold officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.

Gilbert Harlan Schulte, the son of George and Alice (Barkema) Schulte, was born Oct. 22, 1941, at Hampton. He attended and graduated from Alexander High School with the Class of 1959. He then continued his education at Northwestern College in Orange City from 1960-62 and then Central College from 1962-63.

Gilbert was a seasoned baseball player and had received a letter for the sport from Northwestern during his time there.

Gilbert entered the United States Air Force in 1963 and served for periods of time during his tenure in the Phillipines. He was honorably discharged for medical reasons after two years of service in 1965.

Upon returning to civilian life, Gilbert was employed with Hensel Produce in Alexander from 1967-72 spending much of his employment harvesting eggs. For many years he drove trucks for Mitchell Transportation from 1972 through 1982 and then was employed with Lehigh Concrete in Mason City for a time.

Gilbert enjoyed summer city league baseball during summer breaks from college. He took a keen interest in the happenings of his beloved community of Alexander and its health and vitality. He looked forward to conversations over a cup of coffee at the local elevator and times spent at the Alexander Library.

Gilbert enjoyed times spent in the presence of his neices and nephews and was always the one who remembered everyone's birthdays, anniversaries, and other dates that were special in people's lives, as well as keeping his finger and the pulse of the news of the area, be it someone who had passed away, or another event of importance.

In more recent times he looked forward to excursions to Rosie's and Barb's Place in Alexander for a meal and a visit, as well as taking a weekly trip to Belmond for groceries and to dine out.

Gilbert also took pride in being a steward of the family farm lands. He was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church of Alexander.

Gilbert is survived by his brother, Eldon (Mary) Schulte, of Pella, and their children, Matt (Carol) Schulte, Heidi Schulte, Erica Schulte, Austin Schulte, Jenna Schulte, Braden Schulte, and Lindi Schulte, all of Pella; Stephanie (Jason) Heinz and their children, Jaylen, Jackson, Jamison, and Shelby Heinz, all of Humboldt, and Rich (Kara) Schulte and their children, Jacob, Andrew, Camden, and Brooklyn, all of Pella; Gilbert's sister, Audrey Klinkerman and her sons, Steven, Doug, and Scott Klinkerman; several cousins, and aunts and uncles, Foster (Evelyn) Barkema, of Alexander, Carl Barkema, of Belmond Health Care Center, and Calvin (Lola) Schulte, of Alexander; and numerous other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

CLEAR LAKE - Glen Henry Lekwa, 87, 2501 W. State St. in Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday (May 23, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church one hour prior to the service.

Glen was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Dows, the son of Henry and Ella (Johnson) Lekwa.

Glen was a 1939 graduate of the Popejoy High School and then attended Hamilton Business College. He worked construction in the Popejoy area.

Glen married Betty Hurd, June 24, 1945, in Popejoy. In 1955 they moved to Clear Lake and he continued to do construction work. He also worked for Northern Natural Gas for a couple of years but continued in construction until he retired.

Glen married Lila Hopkey Sept. 17, 1990. He enjoyed doing wood carving and woodworking until he moved to Homestead in January 2008.

He enjoyed playing games and e-mailing family and friends. He was a member of Clear Lake Methodist Church.

Glen is survived by his four children, Kay Carolla of Fayetteville, Ark., Rande (Vicki) Lekwa of Mason City, Monte (Cheryl) Lekwa of Spencer, and Jean (Roy) Groven of Mason City; brother, Arnold (Jenny) Lekwa of Urbandale; nine grandchildren, Heather (Charles) Kremers, Sara (Jim) Widmer, Amanda Ramsey, Megan (Rene) Cuevas, Michelle (Martin) Padilla, Shane Lekwa, Stephan (Melanie) Lekwa, Emerald Groven and Ford Groven; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew, Samuel, Logan, Bianca, Zach, Olivia and Sandra.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Betty in 1986; and second wife, Lila in 2004.

MASON CITY - Una Mae Meeker, 92, of Mason City, passed away peacefully Thursday (May 22, 2008) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.

Una was born Jan.13, 1916, to Pete and Minnie (Gast) Jeffries in Nora Springs. She graduated from Nora Springs High School where she went to state for basketball. After graduation Una traveled the country selling jewelry. She was then married and to this union one child was born.

She loved the outdoors and always had to be doing something, she loved to dance and care for others. Una was very proud of her longevity and love of life.

Una is survived by her grandchildren, Carl (Dorothy) Porter of New Mexico and Robin (Dennis) Estel of Cedar Falls; her nephew, Tim Jeffries and his ex-wife, Cheryl, from Mason City; her sister-in-law, Judith Jeffries of Hudson; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, LeaRae Reynolds; and three brothers and three sisters.

Una's family would like to thank Hospice and the employees of the IOOF Home for their care through this difficult time.

Carol Utter, 74, from Eagan, Minn., passed away peacefully on Tuesday (May 20, 2008) after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on Nov. 10, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Dayle and Dorothy Kretzinger. She had been a member of Advent United Methodist Church in Eagan.

Carol graduated from high school in Mason City in 1951. She married Robert Utter in 1953 and together they were blessed with three children. Carol went on to graduate from Minnesota State at Mankato with a degree in sociology. Her passion for helping others led her to jobs as a social worker first in Freeborn County and then spending the remainder of her career at Dakota County before retiring 10 years ago.

Carol had many interests. Her love of music and other cultural events were always a special part of her life. There are many fond memories listening to her playing the piano at special family gatherings. She loved going to museums, plays, and was actively involved in political happenings. Reading was always a part of her desire to learn more.

Later in life she enjoyed winters in Florida and playing golf with close friends and family.

Carol is survived by daughter, Cheryl (Roy) Page of Albert Lea, Minn.; son, Jay (Sheryl) Utter of Lake Crystal, Minn.; son, Tom Utter of Buffalo, Minn.; her sister, Cathie (Larry) Watson; her grandchildren, Ross and Aubree Page, Adam and Andrew Utter, and Kendra Utter; and her nephews, Jeff and John Watson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dayle and Dorothy Kretzinger.

DENVER, Colo. - Marcedes "Marci" Marie Balek was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Mason City and died on April 27, 2008, in Denver, Colo.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on May 3, 2008, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Denver, Colo. Interment was in Augustana Memorial Garden in Denver.

She began her education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1941. While attending school, she became active at and eventually joined Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mason City. After graduation from high school and a short time in junior college, Marci worked for the North Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America, and as a registrar of Mason City.

She met Bud in 1950 when he came to Mason City as a summer student responsible for Immanuel Lutheran Church, during the time of pastoral vacancy. Romance blossomed and she and Bud were married Sept. 7, 1952. In the early years of marriage, she was homemaker and mother. She lived in Duluth, Minn., for three years. Upon moving to Colorado Springs, and when the boys went to school, she became a registrar for the Pikes Peak Council, Boy Scouts of America. She also worked for several years as the baker and manager of the kitchen at a local elementary school. One of the boys remarked, "Mom made the best poppy seed rolls in the world." She lived in Colorado Springs for 18 years and for over the past 34 years has lived in the Denver area. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church. Sometime after her arrival in Denver, she was asked to become parish office secretary for St. Paul Lutheran Church, a position she held for over 10 years, retiring in 1986.

In the early 1990s Marci was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The Edstrom family is grateful for the many people who prayed on Marci's behalf and cared for and befriended her throughout her illness.

Marci is survived by her husband, Andrew "Bud" Edstrom; two sons, Brent (wife, Debbie) and Bruce (wife, Nikki); four grandchildren, Bryan, Kristy (husband, Andy), Andrew and Kaitlyn; a sister-in-law, Lucille Balek; and several nieces and nephews, which include Dave Balek, Lynn Balek, Larry Balek and Terry Balek, all of Mason City; Martin Balek of Clear Lake; and Jerry Balek of Newton; nieces, Mary Margaret Ries of Mason City, Sister Michelle Balek, OSS, of Austin, Texas; and Lorraine Beeson of California.

ST. ANSGAR - Jerry Michael Kline, 61, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (May 23, 2008) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., from complications due to a bone marrow transplant he received on June 13, 2006, to assist in battling leukemia.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, at the United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Burial will take place at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

No visitation is planned.

Jerry Michael Kline was born Sept. 26, 1946, to William and Agnes (Trench) Kline.

Jerry graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1965, attended NIACC and Mankato State.

He later joined The U.S Army and served in Vietnam.

He married Sue Brasch (who died Feb. 24, 2002), of St. Ansgar, on July 6, 1971. They spent two years in Dubuque before returning to St. Ansgar, where their children, Tara Thorson and Eric Kline, were born.

In his marriage to Sue Brasch, he is survived by his father-in-law and mother-in law, Claire and Dorothy Brasch; sisters-in-law, Sally Emerson Brasch and Barb (Rex) Ray; and brother-in-law, Bob Brasch.

He married Margie Hansen, of St. Ansgar, on Jan. 29, 2003. Though their time together wasn't near long enough, the memories and experiences they shared spanned a lifetime.

Jerry was a member of the St. Ansgar American Legion Post 358 and a volunteer fire fighter.

He was the owner/manager of BK Feeds in St. Ansgar for 27 years.

Jerry was an avid gardener and sports enthusiast.

We will miss him dearly and remember him always.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Margie Kline; his children, Tara (Cory) Thorson and Eric (Sunny) Kline; step-children, Shalome (Chuck) Tonelli, Brandi (Kyle) Malmin, Tanner Hansen and Hannah Hansen; grandchildren, Elle, Cadence, Mayzee and Tyson; step-grandchildren, Izzy, Kamen, Madison and Maria; mother-in-law, Laura Bublitz; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Clarice Duvall; sisters, Diane (Roger) Zuehl, Nancy (Don) Salisbury, Janet (Bob) Bruesewitz, Sonja (Tom) Yahnke and Linda Currens; his brothers-in-law, Jim Duvall, John (Sandi) Duvall and Dan Nack; sisters-in-law, Carol (Jack) Kline and Donella (Jim) Kline.

Eunice was born Feb. 24, 1908, at Bassett, the daughter of Willard and Julia (Albertson) Barrett. She attended school in Bassett.

Eunice was united in marriage in 1925 to Donald Knapp and to this union three children were born.

In 1933 she was united in marriage to Thomas Meighan and to this union five children were born. Thomas died in 1979.

Eunice enjoyed dancing, shopping, family gatherings and going out to eat.

In 2002 she moved to Faith Lutheran Home where she enjoyed their activities.

Eunice is survived by three daughters, Dorothy Meineke of Charles City, Beverly Nikolas of Osage and Connie (Ray) Kinsel of Evansdale; three sons, Thomas Meighan of Charles City, Robert (Joan) Meighan of Phoenix, Ariz., and Roger Meighan of McGrath, Minn.; 33 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; two sisters; one daughter, Betty Barrett; one son, Leland (Bud) Knapp; two grandsons; one granddaughter and two great-grandsons.

GRINNELL - Kathryn Miner, 79, of Grinnell and formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (May 24, 2008) at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Mary "Evelyn" Nelson was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Mason City, the daughter of Amel and Ava (Iona) Nelson. She attended Mason City Schools and graduated in 1930.

She moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1943 where she worked as a secretary for the FBI for 31 years until her retirement in 1976. She remained there until moving back to Mason City in 2001.

She enjoyed watching the Utah Jazz, crocheting, playing cards, puzzles and she loved to travel and has been all over the world.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mason City and also in Salt Lake City. She also was a member of United Methodist Women and the NARFE.

She is survived by her cousins, Helen Ristau and husband, Walter, of Mason City, and Lenore Forbes of Nora Springs and many friends at the Willow Pointe Assisted Living.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She attended rural school at Clemons, Iowa, and graduated from Liberty Consolidated School in 1929. She came to Clear Lake in 1937 to live with her aunt and uncle.

She married Thomas E. Nelson Sr. on Aug. 5, 1945, in Colo.

Vivian loved doing jigsaw puzzles and reading her Bible.

She was a member of the Regular Baptist Church were she was in the same Bible study group since 1964. She taught Sunday School for many years and had all neighbor children in her classes.

She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and baking cookies for the neighbor children.

Vivian is survived by her sons, Roger (Dawn) Nelson, Clear Lake, and Russel (Beth) Nelson, Fort Mill, S.C.; one stepson, Tom (Janice) Nelson, Clear Lake; her sister, Helen Phares, Cambridge, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; her parents; two brothers, Forest and Arthur Turner; one sister, Isabelle Gerke, step-daughter, Vernelda Gummeson; and one granddaughter, Emily Nelson.

GARNER - Maynard A. Schoneman, 90, of Garner, died Thursday (May 22, 2008) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Inurnment will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Garner United Methodist Church, Garner Ambulance or Hospice of North Iowa.

Maynard Arnold Schoneman, the son of Bert and Hannah (Heimendinger) Schoneman, was born June 25, 1917, at Britt.

He attended country school at Orthel Township No. 8 west of Britt. In February 1932, he moved with his family to Garner where he graduated from high school in 1935.

Maynard continued his education at AIB in Des Moines, graduating in 1937 with a degree in accounting.

He returned to Garner where he owned and operated the Garner Caf�.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II from May 7, 1941, to Aug. 31, 1945, in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, receiving the Bronze Star, three Bronze Battle Stars, seven Overseas Service Bars and a Service Stripe.

In April 1946, Maynard and his brothers, Marvin and Bill, began operating the Grill Caf� in Garner.

On June 14, 1947, he married Lora Mae Lehmann at the United Methodist Church in Sibley. They lived in Garner all of their married life.

Maynard served as Hancock County Auditor from 1946 to 1954 before working for the USPS as a rural mail carrier.

From 1955 to 1975 he owned and operated the Standard Station with his brother, Bill. He also operated the Garner Liquor Store from 1976 until his retirement in 1985.

Maynard's interests included reading, golfing and going for coffee.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner where he served as an usher and was on various church boards.

He also was a member of Garner VFW and American Legion, Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit, Garner Lions Club, was a charter member of the Garner Rotary Club and Garner Jaycees, and served on the board of Prairie View Apartments.

Maynard is survived by his wife, Lora Mae, of Garner; twin brother, Marvin Schoneman of Garner; brother, Marion (Polly) Schoneman of Thornton; sister, Betty Brugman of Pipestone, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill (Irene) Schoneman and Mickey (June) Schoneman; sister in-law Kaye Schoneman and a brother-in-law, Larry Brugman.

CHARLES CITY - Linda Rae Ferch Webb, 55, of Charles City, died Friday (May 23, 2008).

Funeral services for Linda Ferch Webb will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Zobel, Ruby Weitzel  
 
MESA, Ariz. - Ruby Weitzel Zobel, 87, of Mesa, Ariz., passed away Thursday (May 22, 2008).

Ruby will be inurned with her husband, Myron, at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif., at a date yet to be determined.

Ruby was born July 15, 1920, in Mason City to Conrad and Christina (Schmar) Weitzel.

She graduated from Mason City High School and on May 4, 1941, Ruby married Myron R. Zobel.

The family moved several times while Myron was in the military, later returning to Mason City to work and raise their family.

Ruby retired in 1980 and in 1985 they moved to Hemet, Calif.

Her hobbies included golf, reading, quilting, cards, shuffleboard, bowling and dancing.

She is survived by her brother, George; two children, Sandra Kuhl (Steven) and Ron (Carol); grandchildren, Susan Wilmes (Joseph), Andrea Mattson (Gregory), Jennifer and Brendan; and great-grandchildren, Timothy, Thomas, Jonathan, Ashley, Bradley, Bethany, Michelle, Carter and Nina.

She was preceded in death by parents, her husband of 52 years, Myron; her sisters Elizabeth, Minnie, Molly and Pauline; and brothers James and Carl.
