Lawlis, Mary Anne (Smith)

Mary Anne, 79 years, surrendered peacefully to her battle with cancer and was born into eternal life on May 10, 2008.

She is the devoted mother of Joanne (Mike) Schulz, Trish (Mike) Hilbert, Michael Lawlis, John (Carol) Lawlis, and Sheila (Rick) Monkarsh; proud and loving grandmother of Colleen and Brenden Schulz; Erin, Kaley, Will and Bridget Hilbert; Meghan, Morgan, Brian and Mary Lawlis; Shea, Jack, Kirby, Delaney, Mason, Molly, Thomas and Tess Lawlis; Jacob, Kendall and William Monkarsh. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Cain, her great-aunt, Ella Muehe, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kirby; her parents, Leo F. and M. Bernadette Smith; and five brothers.

Mary Anne was born in a log home in Worth County, Iowa, on May 18, 1928, and grew up on her parents' farm in Mason City. She attended Holy Family High School and graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque, in 1949, majoring in English. After college, Mary Anne taught secondary school in Joice, Iowa, and Denver, Colo.

She enjoyed a memorable trip through Europe with several girlfriends in the fall of 1954. It was in that same year that she was introduced to the love of her life and she and Kirby were married in August of 1955. They lived in Mason City until 1970 when a business opportunity brought them to Wisconsin.

They raised their children in Mequon where Mary Anne was active in her parish, St James Catholic Church (Lumen Christi). Mary Anne was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She created a warm and faith filled home where friends were always welcome and laughter could often be heard.

She never lost her love for adventure as she and Kirby traveled the world over with relatives and friends, both for business and pleasure. Mary Anne was unwavering in her faith throughout her entire life and through this faith she was able to obtain great strength and comfort as she faced many of life's challenges, especially these last few months.

Mary Anne was extremely generous not only with her family but with many, many organizations. Her children and grandchildren will forever remember her sparkling blue, Irish eyes, her beautiful smile and her love of a good laugh. The family would like to extend their thanks to Galena for the loving, dedicated care that she bestowed upon Mary Anne. Also a thank you to the Oncology Department and the 3rd Floor nurses at St. Mary's Ozaukee for the outstanding care that they provided. Very special thanks to Dr. Kevin Goniu for the compassion and personal care that he unfailingly extended to Mary Anne.

Bishop, Frank Allen

MASON CITY - Frank Allen Bishop, 62, of Mason City, died Tuesday (May 6, 2008) at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A memorial service for Frank will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Inurnment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Friday at the chapel.

The family of Frank Allen Bishop has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Frank Allen Bishop Memorial Fund in his memory.

Frank Allen Bishop was born on Sep. 20, 1945, in Garner, the son of Frank Eugene and Kathleen Madelyn (Gelner) Bishop. Frank Bishop was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend. Despite his physical handicap, he would visit his mother Kathleen at her nursing home and tend to his sister, Susan, and his niece, Shaylynd. He visited his many friends on a regular basis and brightened everyone's day. He was much more than just a man in a wheelchair. He was and always will remain a profile in courage, independence and character.

Frank was an AAU swimming champion and graduating from Mason City High in 1965. He set records in the butterfly and backstroke, barely missing the Olympic qualifying time trial mark. He was a powerful swimmer earning the nickname "Bish the Fish." He was so strong and so mentally determined to accomplish such things, that at the age of 17, he once won a bet that he could walk around an entire city block on his hands and he did it. The bet was for a whopping five dollars but the determination was worth a million dollars, just to see him succeed where others failed.

Tragically at the age of 32, he was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident near Nora Springs. Even that did not stop Frank from swimming at Big Blue for hours or hiking the trails at Pilot Knob in his wheelchair, or powerlifting in his garage to stay in shape. He was and always will be Mason City's toughest "Phenom." He was never totally dependent on anyone or anything, often saying, "I can do it," "Don't worry about me," or "No problem, I'll be there." His attitude made him worthy of the help he did get from his family and friends who cared for him deeply. He will forever be missed and may his memory be eternal.

He is survived by his sister Susan Sinclair and a very special niece, Shaylynd Sinclair. Also a son, Brett Bishop; and granddaughter, Lindsay Bishop of Arkansas remain.

Frank was preceded in death by his mother Kathleen Sinclair; a brother, Douglas Bishop; and a brother, Mark Sinclair.

Thank you, John Lagios.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

David was born on July 14, 1929, at St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton to Fred H. and Bessie L. (Olson) Markle. He attended New Hampton Schools, graduating in 1947.

In 1950, he married Betty Lou Knutson at Jerico Lutheran Church. Betty passed away in 1993. In 1998, he married former New Hampton High School classmate, Dolores Zipse Boerschel at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.
