Preston, William R.

Dr. William R. Preston "Bill," "Doc" passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 6, 2008.

A celebration of life was held at his home on Midland Street on Sunday, April 20.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. May 24, 2008 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. A lunch will follow at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. A special thanks to Dr. Paul Ryan and as Dad would describe, "the best nurse" Amber.

Bill was born May 3, 1922, to Charles and Louise Preston in Carlisle, Iowa. While serving in World War II, he met and married Marie, his bride of 63 years. Marie worked several jobs helping him receive his degree in veterinary medicine from Iowa State University. Bill practiced veterinary medicine in Clear Lake from 1950 until he sold his practice in 1969 and undertook farming.

In 2005, he moved to Idaho to be closer to his daughter, Diane. During semi-retirement Bill and Marie were able to travel extensively in the United States, Canada, Alaska and Australia. He was able to enjoy 30 years of winter at Venture Out in Mesa, Ariz., and will leave behind many friends on the 600 block of Merlin. During his brief time in Idaho he developed many relationships throughout the community. He participated in several camping groups.

Bill left us with many beautiful wood projects from 30-plus years of expert craftsmanship. He loved playing his organ, cribbage with his grandchildren, pinochle and bridge.

Bill was involved in many organizations, including Evening Lions, Rotary Club, American Legion, IOOF Lodge, Farm Bureau and a member of the Methodist Church.

He was comforted in the last moments of his life by his "granddoggie" Brandi.

Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, we will all miss you and we are comforted by the fact that someday we will be playing cribbage and pinochle with you again - and, no Dad, I am not going to learn how to play bridge!

Bill is survived by his wife Marie; children Dennis (Marcia), Diane Hass (Jack Arnold); grandchildren, Chris (Colleen) Jennifer Wood (Brian), Tania Clements (Nick), Jacob Hass (Gennifer), Dustin Hass (Karen) and three great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert.
