Donald B. Russell

CHARLES CITY — Donald B. Russell, 93, of 1106 Kelly St. in Charles City, died on Wednesday (July 25, 2007) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with Monsignor Father Stanley J. Hayek presiding. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Donald Burdell Russell was born July 6, 1914, in Mason City to Elmer E. and Cloe A. (McGowan) Russell. He attended school in Mason City, graduating in 1932. Don furthered his education attending Hamilton College in Mason City.

On Sept. 19, 1936, Don was united in marriage to Ruth L. Cooksie in Mason City. Don and Ruth moved to Charles City in 1948. He worked for 27 years as a car salesman at Bissonnette Chevrolet in Charles City, retiring in 1980.

Don was as a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1419, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1011, all in Charles City.

Don enjoyed talking about automobiles and anything automotive. His leisure activities and interests included fishing, music and baseball. Don will be best remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. Don was a man who was generous and had a special place in his heart for all children.

Don is survived by his two daughters, Ann (John) Wiggins of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary Beth (Steve) Page of Mason City; 11 grandchildren, Ellen, Eric, Ethan, Emily, Edee, Andrea, Amy, Julie, Brandon, Bryce and Brock; 16 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Russell, of Charles City and special “little” neighborhood friend, Bryanna Stephens, of Charles City.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth L. Russell, on Nov. 27, 1986; two sons, Charles and Richard Russell; two grandsons, Jeff Russell and Everett Wiggins; one sister, Marie Buckland; and two brothers, Robert and Mervel Russell.

Dale J. Lewis

MASON CITY — Dale J. Lewis, 76, of 238 25th St. S.W., died Tuesday afternoon (July 24, 2007) at the IOOF home in Mason City.

Funeral services for Dale will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Edward Bard of Temple Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dale was born on Aug. 13, 1930, in Arpin, Wis., the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Marie (Gardner) Lewis. He and his family lived and worked on a farm at Rockford.

On July 8, 1952, he married Phyllis Marie Lemon and they made their home in Mason City. Over the years the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Mason City Foundry and White Farm in Charles City employed Dale. He also was self-employed doing various jobs, which included roofing and painting. He and Phyllis were married for 28 years until she preceded him in death in 1980.

On June 7, 1987, he was united in marriage to Rhonda Dietz in Clear Lake and they made their home in Mason City.

Dale enjoyed country music and could be found dancing in many local establishments. He enjoyed fishing in area streams and lakes and watching stock car races. He also enjoyed spending time visiting with family and friends. He represented Burke’s Bar in pool league for several years.

Dale is survived six children, Deb Ingle and her special friend, Mike Goodsell, Vicki and her husband, Roger Myhre, Jolene Erickson, Tim and his wife, Cheryl Lewis, Terri and her husband, Frank Baltierra, and Dale Lewis Jr. and his special friend, Stephanie Johnson, all of Mason City; 16 grandchildren, Brian Craig, Darcy Manthe, Ryan Ingle, Roger Myhre, Shawna Lewis, T.C. Lewis, Landon Lewis, Franky Baltierra, Twyla Steenblock, Tara Redfern, Phil Myhre, Dustin, Kaylee, Kanysha Baltierra and Dylan and Dallas Lewis; 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers Ike Lewis of Iowa Falls and Eugene Lewis of Mason City.

His parents, first wife, daughter, Cathy Craig; grandson, Jeremy Ingle; sister, Betty Schmitt; and two brothers, Don and Roger Lewis, preceded Dale in death.

DOWS — Doris H. Charleston, 90, of Dows, died Tuesday (July 24, 2007) at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

MASON CITY — Mary L. Paraskevas, 88, of 819 S. Polk Ave., died Wednesday (July 25, 2007) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W., with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mary was born July 4, 1919, in Samos, Greece. She attended school in Samos and graduated from high school there. Mary married Louis Paraskevas on April 16, 1947, in Athens, Greece, and moved to the United States that same year. She worked for Jacob B. Decker and Sons for several years. She then worked for Smith Draperies, making drapes, and later for Damon’s and Tyler-Ryan Furniture Store.

She was a longtime member of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church where she enjoyed baking for her church and neighbors.

Mary is survived by a brother-in-law in Greece and many nieces and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband, Louis in 1991.

Marie L. Barta

MANLY — Marie L. Barta 89, died Wednesday (July 25, 2007) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Marie L. Barta was born on Oct. 4, 1917, in Manly, the daughter of Edward and Katherine Barta. Upon graduation from high school, she began her teaching career as a traveling piano teacher. She would spend one day a week at each of the schools in Fertile, Hanlontown, Grafton, Plymouth and Kensett.

She studied music at Drake University and was a private piano student of Edwin Schmitt. She attended pedagogy classes at Wartburg College and took many master classes from well-known musicians, including Marcel Dupre.

In 1960, she established a piano and organ studio in Mason City; in 1988, she moved her studio to her home in Manly. She taught for over 70 years. She served as organist for the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Mason City, and later for the Christian Scientist Church, Mason City. For nearly 17 years, she served as the organist for the Hogan-Bremer-Colonial Chapel.

During her career, Marie served the Iowa Music Teachers Association for two years as recording secretary, two years as corresponding secretary, 35 years as secretary of Music Teachers of Northern Iowa and 23 years as district chairperson for auditions. She has also served as a national adjudicator for American College of Musicians and was inducted into the ACM Piano Hall of Fame. She served as a delegate to seven European countries and the Soviet Union in the Piano Guild People to People program. She was a three-time president of Pilot Club of Mason City and served as a volunteer announcer at KCMR on Saturday mornings.

Marie was selected for the National Piano Teachers’ Guild Hall of Fame, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who of National Women, Dictionary of International Biography and was a recipient of KGLO’s Golden Apple Award.

She has written an unpublished book, “Only Stand Alone and Wait,” which is in the Library of Congress. She enjoyed knitting, writing letters and cooking in her leisure time. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Marie is survived by two nieces and several cousins, and many students who have kept in touch with her during the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald.

Leonard Stumme

TRIPOLI — Leonard Stumme, 68, of Tripoli, passed away on Tuesday afternoon (July 24, 2007) at home from complications of cancer.

Leonard was born on July 8, 1939, the son of Ewald and Leona (Pries) Stumme in Maxfield Township, rural Readlyn. He was baptized on July 30, 1939, at his parents’ home. He attended country school through the eighth grade at Douglas Township No. 5 and graduated from Tripoli High School in 1957.

Following high school, he entered the Navy. While stationed in Washington, D.C., Leonard was a member of the Ceremonial Honor Guard for military burials. One highlight of Leonard’s Navy service was participating at the ceremony in 1958 in which President Eisenhower laid to rest the unknown soldier of the Korean Conflict at the nation’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

On Oct. 16, 1960, he was united in marriage to Eileen Burkhardt at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Siegel (rural Waverly). The couple made their home in Waterloo, where Leonard worked for Rath Packing, Wonder Bakery and John Deere.

In August of 1970, the couple moved to Clear Lake, where he owned and operated the Woerner Oil Company for seven years and then drove truck for various companies.

In 1995, he and Eileen moved back to the family farm where Leonard grew up in rural Tripoli. He was an organic farmer and drove truck. He retired from trucking in September 2005 and continued farming until last fall.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Congregation, Siegel, where he was an elder and active member, vice president of the North Iowa Organic Association and former member of the Jaycees and Lions Club while living in Clear Lake.

Survivors are his wife, Eileen; children, Alan (Kelley) Stumme, of Goodell, David (Karen) Stumme, of Tripoli, Brenda (Rev. Larry) Feldt, of Denver, and Darin (Rachel) Stumme, of Seattle, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and one due in August; brother, Leroy “Lee” (Helen) Stumme of Garrison; three sisters, Gertrude (Rudy) Pavelec, of Tripoli, Elinor Moeller, of Tripoli and Luanne (Virgil) Butterfield of Waterloo and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ewald and Leona Stumme; step-mother, Hilda Stumme; and one brother, Kenneth Stumme.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at St. Paul Lutheran Congregation, Siegel in Tripoli with Pastors Michael Wagnitz and Larry Feldt officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Chapel Cemetery rural Cedar Falls.

Mildred I. Ax

GARNER — Mildred I. Ax, 97, of Garner, died Wednesday (July 25, 2007) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with Pastor Donna Buckman officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Mildred Irene Ax, the daughter of William John and Bess (Hoyt) Hampel, was born Aug. 29, 1909, on a farm near Blairstown in Benton County, Iowa. She moved with her family to South Dakota and, at the age of six, returned with them to Iowa settling in Hancock County.

She attended rural schools and graduated from Garner High School in 1927 with a normal training teaching Certificate. Mildred taught in the rural schools of Hancock County for five years. During her summer breaks she continued her education at Iowa State University in Ames.

On Oct. 16, 1931, she was married to Richard T. Ax at her parents’ farm near Garner. They farmed in the Garner and Klemme area until moving to a farm south of Ventura in March 1942. In 1954, they moved into Ventura.

After retirement, they traveled all over the U.S. and to many foreign countries. In 2003, she moved to Concord Care Center in Garner. She enjoyed her family, nature and gardening. Her love of nature led her to become a Master Gardener and master floral judge, with many years of experience judging horticulture at the Iowa State Fair and numerous county fairs.

Mildred was a member of Zion Evangelical and Zion Women’s Fellowship. She belonged to the Lake View Study Club, Ventura Garden Club and was a charter member of the Federated Garden Club in Ventura.

4-H was an important part of Mildred’s life from the time she was a teenager. She was a charter member of the first girls’ 4-H Club in Ell Township and served as a state 4-H officer in 1927. As an adult, she was a 4-H leader and had served as a member of the Hancock and Cerro Gordo County 4-H boards. In 2002, she became the first member from Hancock County to be selected for the new Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.

Mildred is survived by her three children, Eunice Kinsella of Garner, Richard (Yesenia) Ax of Ventura and Susan (James Van Wert) Ax of Hayward, Calif.; three grandchildren, Kathryn Kinsella, Kirk Kinsella and Annalisa Poriel; four great-grandchildren, Tanner Kinsella, Caleb Brown, Tori Kinsella and Ethan Brown; one great-great grandchild, Raygan Kinsella; two sisters, Winifred Pritchard of Osage and Shirley Heuberger of Reno, Nev.; as well as many nieces and nephews who have always been very special to their “Aunt Mid.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, February 1986; her parents; son-in-law, Mike Kinsella; grandchildren, Karen Kinsella and Thomas Kinsella; an infant brother, Earl; sisters, Beverly Hyde and Dorothy Foster; and brothers, Earl and Arnold “Bub” Hampel.

James Roger Stehn

NORTHWOOD — James Roger Stehn, 58, of Northwood, died Wednesday (July 25, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City after a brief battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hart officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

James “Hairy” Roger Stehn was born on June 17, 1949, in Emmetsburg, the son of Delmer and Edna (Floy) Stehn and brother of Ron, Dan and Kathy Stehn. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter. He attended school in Carpenter and Grafton, and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1967. While in school Jim wrestled and played football.

After completing his schooling, Jim worked at Central Soya, Wilson Foods, Winnebago Industries, and the Northwood Co-op Elevator for 27 years and was presently working at Worth County Public Health as a transit driver.

He was united in marriage to Eldora Hengesteg on July 17, 1970, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and to this union three children were born, Tracey, Toni and Rod. Jim and Eldora were also blessed with 10 grandchildren.

Jim loved to spend time with his family and friends. Jim also loved to bowl, playing softball and raising livestock.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood and was on the Worth County Fair Board.

Faith V. Boyd

MASON CITY — Faith V. Boyd, 83, of 273 Willowbrook Drive, died Thursday (July 26, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating. A family inurnment will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Faith was born April 16, 1924, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Walter and Alma (Crosby) Wood. She graduated from Ventura High School in 1942 where she was on the girls basketball team and was in the school band.

On June 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Irvin E. Boyd at the First Methodist Church in Clear Lake. To this loving union three children were born, Mary Lou, David and Stephen.

Faith was a member of First Baptist Church and was a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, Mason City Chapter.

Faith loved to travel, camp and golf, but playing bridge was her favorite. She and Irv wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for several years.

She is survived by her three children, Mary Lou Murphy and husband, John, of Mason City, David Boyd and fiancée, Tami Gavin, of Waterloo, and Stephen Boyd and fiancée, Nancy Saunders, of Des Moines; grandchildren, Mark Murphy and wife, Theresa, of Ames, Robert Murphy of Mason City, Eric Boyd of Waterloo, and Brandon Boyd of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Claudia and Becky Murphy of Ames, Mackenzie Murphy of Minneapolis, Minn., and Logan Boyd of Waterloo. She is also survived by her sister, Dolores Zirbel and husband, Glen, of Ankeny; her brothers, Amos Wood and wife, Rachel, of Clear Lake, Ellery Wood and wife, Darlene, of Garner and Don Wood and wife, Donita, of Pinetop, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Shirley Carr, and husband, Veryl, of Clear Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Neal W. McLean

MARION —Neal W. McLean, 84, of Marion, died Friday (July 27, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center.

A celebration of life will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at The Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 3855 Katz Drive in Marion, by the Rev. Howard Chapman, with military honors. Private family inurnment will take place in Wapello at a later date.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lorna; two daughters, Tana (Leman) Olson of Mason City and Rae Ann (Rick) Dickinson of Sabula; five granddaughters, Marni (Eric), Erin (Bill), Kristi (Mitch), Katy (Bob), and Sara Grace; five great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Carol Hervey of Roswell, N.M., Douglas (Joan) McLean of Des Moines, and Andree (Jack) Morgan of Hiawatha; and a sister-in-law, Norma McLean of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Harold McLean, Jr.

Neal was born Jan. 31, 1923, the son of Harold and Grace (Odle) McLean in Wapello. He graduated from Wapello High School in 1942 and attended Burlington Junior College. Neal served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II.

On Dec. 14, 1946, he married Lorna Jordan in Columbus Junction. He worked for 27 years as a technical illustrator for Rockwell Collins, retiring in 1987.

Neal was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marion, a 50-year Mason and a member of Marion Masonic Lodge No. 6 AF & AM, and American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion.

Neal enjoyed playing golf, photography, and oil painting. He loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Etta Gertrude (Ackerman) Swartwood

NORTHWOOD — Etta Gertrude (Ackerman) Swartwood, 88, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Northwood, died Tuesday (July 24, 2007) at the Oakhurst Rehab & Nursing Center in Ocala, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 30, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, with Pastor Wendi Gillan of the United Methodist Church in Northwood officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell.

Etta Gertrude (Ackerman) Swartwood was born on Oct. 17, 1918, in Bristow, in Butler County, the daughter of Fred and Grace (Freese) Ackerman, and siblings, Anna Mikkelson, Joe Ackerman and Henry Ackerman. Etta became sister-in-law to Ingval Mikkelson, Carmen Ackerman and Mabel Ackerman. She attended Allison-Bristow community schools in the first grade beginning Sept. 13, 1926. She received many certificates of recognitions for her great talent in spelling contests and was recognized to go to the Iowa State Spelling Bee.

At the age of 18, Etta became the bride of Donald Brown Swartwood, of Nora Springs, on Dec. 17, 1937, in Charles City. Etta and Donald made their home on a farm near Rudd and Nora Springs. They were blessed with five children, Neva Mae, Rodger Gale, Mary Anna, Judith Marie, and Donna Louise. Etta became grandmother to 30 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. After her life with Donald, whom deceased Jan. 1, 1980, Etta was caretaker of her mother, Grace, for many years. After that, she resided in Ocala, Fla., near her daughters, Neva Mae and Judith Marie, for 10 years. Due to ill health she became a resident of the Oakhurst Nursing Center of Ocala, Fla., up until her death. Etta always took the hard times with a smile as Oakhurst Nursing Center came to love her sweetness and smiles.

Etta enjoyed crossword puzzles, and playing solitaire, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and all her grandchildren.

At the end of church services, Etta would love to sing, “May the good Lord Bless and keep you, whether near or far away. May the good Lord give you that long awaited golden day. May your troubles all be small ones, and your fortunes ten by ten. May the good Lord Bless and keep you, til we meet again. All God’s children say it, “Amen.”

COULTER — Lewis Johnson, 78, of Coulter, died Saturday morning (July 28, 2007) at the Franklin Prairie Apartments in Hampton.

Lewis was born on Aug. 25, 1928, to J.L. Johnson and Annie Fekkers Johnson. Lewis was a life-long resident of Franklin County, growing up in rural route Alexander, Latimer and Sheffield. He attended school in Alexander and Sheffield.

Lewis married Betty Blanchard, on Sept. 28, 1946, in Austin, Minn. To this union four children were born, Jane Marie, Jim (Michelle) Johnson, Nancy (Keith) Freie, and Vicki (Paul) Sondag. He worked 30 years for the Rock Island Railroad before retiring. Lewis and Betty lived 60 years in the Alexander and Sheffield areas, 40 of those years in Coulter.

Lewis was a hard worker. Sometimes working two jobs to take care of his family. He never complained once. Lewis loved his family and was so proud of his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. He will deeply be missed by his family.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Betty, of 60 years; three children, Jim of Golden Valley, Ariz., Nancy of Latimer, and Vicki of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren, Joseph Johnson, Dan Freie, Erin Nolton, Rochelle Freie, Rachel Manders, Steven Anderson, and Derek Sondag; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Petersen, of Latimer; one brother, Dale (Marian) Johnson, of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Jane Marie; three brothers, Bernie, Harold, and Jerry; four sisters, Carrie Igou, Ruth Schaefer, Lucille Pergande and Eileen Farrer.

He returned to Omaha in 1986, where he has lived ever since.

Cindy was one of six children born to Glen and Doris (Moorehead) Wyborny. She was born on April 26, 1957, in Mason City. She graduated in 1975 from Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Schools and then received her LPN from North Iowa Area Community College. While attending school, she was employed by Wyborny Concrete and then owned and operated the “Teddy Bear” day care in Rockford. She was then engaged as a nurse for Comprehensive Systems, and later for Nora Springs Care Center. She later worked for River City Fence and then the Rockford United Methodist Church as a secretary.

Cindy married Gary McRoberts on Dec. 15, 1985, at the Methodist Church in Rockford. To this union three sons were born.

On Sept. 22, 2001, she was joined in marriage with Gary Schriever in Rockford.

Cindy’s heart went out to anyone in need. She supported Relay for Life and many other community projects that came along. Her love for her boys and their sports led her to starting the RRMR mat club for wrestling, which she could still be found working for last week. She found time in her busy life to camp around the area. She also enjoyed the quiet solitude of fishing. As often as possible, she would take her chances at spinning the slots. The most important aspect of her life was being with and being surrounded by her family and friends. She gave whatever she tried in life her best and she relished being helpful to others.

Those thankful for sharing Cindy’s life include her husband, Gary Schriever, Rockford; parents, Glen and Doris Wyborny, Rudd; three sons: Shane, Nathan, and Lance McRoberts, all of Rockford; step-children: Crystal Swanson, and Justin and wife, Pam Schriever, all of Rockford; one sister, Charlotte and husband, Gary Johnson, Mason City; two brothers, Roni and wife, Kerrie Wyborny and Micki and wife, Shelley Wyborny all of Rudd; 21 nieces and nephews and 35 great-nieces and nephews; step-grandchildren, Matyson and Allyson Swanson and Dillon and Dawson Schriever; her special caregivers, Monica and Cory Murray and their children, Cody and Abby and many, many friends. Virginia Englet was born on Dec. 22, 1919, in Mason City, the daughter of Clifford and Ethel (Broccett) Englet. She attended Mason City public schools.

On June 17, 1936, she was united in marriage to Dexter Ewers; to this union three children were born. Virginia was a homemaker for most of her life. After Dexter died, Virginia began working at the Hy-Vee Bakery and the Goodwill Store until her retirement in 1989.

Virginia loved playing cards, gambling, cooking, and flowers; her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, church circle, Moose Lodge and 500 Club.

Virginia is survived by her children: Dexter Jr. (Darlene) Ewers, Mason City, Dixie (Chuck) Kraft, Mason City, Denny Ewers, Sheffield, nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Viola Gaines, Mason City, and Betty Schumacher, Rockford; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Samuel Willard Cunningham, son of Logan and Ada Jane Leebman Cunningham, was born on Oct. 25, 1916, at Coulterville, Ill. He graduated from Morningside College and then entered the Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., where he completed his pastoral study.

He married Mildred V. Astor, at Sioux City. In the late 1940s, he assumed his first pastoral assignment at the Rowan and Latimer Methodist Church.

For nearly the next thirty-three years, he was pastor at Methodist churches in Garner; Whittield Methodist in Sioux City; St. Luke’s Methodist in Dubuque; Asbury Methodist in Webster City, and First Methodist in Mason City, where he retired in 1981, and the couple returned to Webster City.

The Rev. Cunningham is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter, Donna Cunningham, St. Paul, Minn.; and grandson, William Verburg Cunningham, St. Paul, Minn.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald; two sisters; and four brothers.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — At the age of 87, Norman William Raisch of Meridian, passed away at the Boise Health and Rehab Center on July 27, 2007.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5009 Cassia in Boise, Idaho. A reception will follow. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.

 

A visitation for family and friends will be held today from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the Accent Funeral Home, 1303 N. Main Street, Meridian.

 

Norman was born in Geneva, Iowa, on April 22, 1920, to a large farm family of eight siblings. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith by his grandfather, the Rev. Otto VonGemmingen, at three weeks of age. He farmed with his father and brothers at a early age, using horse-drawn machinery. Here he developed a love of farming and a lifetime occupation.

 

On the day Pearl Harbor was attacked he decided to enlist in the Coast Guard. He completed pharmacist’s mate school at Columbia University and served on both the USS Wakefield and the Samuel B. Chase. He was present at Normandy on D-Day, attending to the soldiers who returned from the shore to the ship.

 

Norman married Dorothe Jacobia in Postville, Iowa, while he was on leave. They have been married for more than 62 years. Four children, three daughters and a son, were born to this marriage. His family now includes 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and another great-grandchild soon to make his debut.

 

Norman farmed for 40 years. The first 15 years he farmed in Iowa. He was so skilled at plowing that in 1956 he won the Iowa State Level Land Plowing Championship, giving him the honor of a handshake and audience with President Dwight D. Eisenhower who attended the event.

 

In 1959, his name was drawn from among fellow war veterans to receive a homestead farm close to Minidoka, Idaho. This began 25 years of farming in Idaho, with a two-year period in his home state of Iowa. Dorothe taught elementary school and helped on the farm throughout their marriage.

 

Norman and Dorothe sold the farm and retired to Meridian in 1985. They spent more than 20 winters as snowbirds in Arizona. Summers were spent camping with the Good Sam Club.

 

Norman was a avid sports fan, enjoying all baseball, football and basketball games. He was also skilled at Pinochle and other card games. He was lifetime members of the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod and the American Legion.

 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothe of Meridian, and his children; Jean (Glennys) Lunde of Osage, Iowa, Marilyn (Bob) Friday of Meridian, Kathryn (Lynn) Nokes of Garden Valley, Idaho, Dennis (Michele) Raisch of Albuquerque, N.M.

 

His surviving grandchildren are Gregory Lunde, Angela (Jay) Montgomery, Matthew (Alison) Lunde, Bobbi (Greg) Wooten, Jeff (Heather) Friday, Jason (Kristine) Friday, Adam (Tierney) Nokes, Andrew Nokes, Kevin and Shelby Raisch. His surviving great-grandchildren are Chase and Kacie Wooten, Aaron Nokes, Jackson Montgomery, Aiden Lunde, and Ellie Friday.

 

Surviving sisters are Margaret Jensen of Hampton, Mildred Armfield of Latimer, and Alice Pickens of Visalia, Calif.

 

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Juanita D. Nielsen

 

ROCKFORD — Juanita D. Nielsen, 83, of 301 Seventh St. N.E. in Rockford, died early Friday morning (July 20, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

 

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, at Rockford First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W. in Rockford, with the Rev. Kenneth Kent, officiating.

 

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church.

 

Inurnment of Juanita was conducted at an earlier date at Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls next to her husband Willard.

 

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of North Iowa. There will be a time of remembrances following the service in the church fellowship hall.

 

Juanita was born on Jan. 13, 1924, at Traer, the daughter of Oran Earl Adams and Edith Dewey. She is a 1942 graduate of Iowa Falls High School.

 

Shortly after graduation, she was united in marriage to Willard Nielsen on May 2, 1942, in Iowa Falls.

 

They served as the camp cook and camp ranger for 26 years at the Winnebago Scout Camp in Marble Rock and then lived in Rockford for 20 years.

 

Juanita is a member of the Rockford United Methodist Church. She spent her spare time doing plastic canvas stitching, mushroom hunting, gardening and camping along with really hard 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles.

 

Those thankful in sharing Juanita’s life include her daughter, Lorrie, and her husband, Ray Carver, of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Dennis P. Nielsen and his wife, Dedre, Texas; Michelle and her husband, Tom Doole, of Colorado Spring, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Nichole, Britny, Justin and Jeremy; two sisters, Helen and her husband, Gene Gard, of McAllen, Texas; Floraine and her husband, Urban Kuennen, of Oelwein; one brother, DeWayne Adams, of Hollister, Mo.

 

Her husband, Willard, who died in November of 1991; her son Larry, who died in 1971, her second son Dennis, who died July 2, 2007, two brothers, Donald and George Adams, and one sister, Donna Mae Knutson, preceded her in death.

 Edward A. Buchanan Sr.


 

FERTILE — Edward A. Buchanan Sr., 78, 506 W. Washington, Fertile, died Sunday (July 29, 2007) at his home surrounded by his family. Ed was in failing health since 2005 and thanks to the care of Chuck Waage his family got to enjoy him a few more years.

 

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Inurnment will be at Brush Point Cemetery, Fertile.

 

Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

 

Memorials may be given to the Edward A. Buchanan Sr. Memorial Fund.

 

Ed was born on Dec. 10, 1928, in Marshalltown, the son of Fred and Edith (Castell) Buchanan. He graduated from Marshalltown High School.

 

He was in the grocery business for 20 years, working in Marshalltown, Ottumwa, Colfax, Rapid City, S.D., and Mason City Easter’s Super Value. He operated Mr. Ed & Chuck’s Café in Rockwell in 1966 and 1967.

 

Ed owned and operated Fertile Meats and Grocery with Chuck Waage from 1975 until 1985. They then owned and operated Butcher’s Steakhouse until his retirement in 2005 at which time his granddaughter took over to carry on the family tradition.

 

Ed enjoyed spending time with his family and daily breakfast, lunch and dinner trips to Downtown Café and Butcher’s Steakhouse. He also enjoyed singing in the Church of Christ Choirs, dancing the jitterbug and Charleston, watching Lawrence Welk and old movies. Ed loved his dogs.

 

He was active in the Fertile Booster Club and Lions Club, and sponsored softball tournaments held in Fertile. He was known as a grandpa to all.

 

Ed is survived by two daughters, Jane Ramon and her husband, Al, of Fertile, and Joyce Hanson and her husband, Mike, of Ventura;  one son, Ed Buchanan Jr. and his wife, Jan, of Ventura; six grandchildren, Laurie Buchanan and Dan Bolz, of Mason City, Vino Ramon and his wife, Mary, of Nora Springs; Julie Grell and her husband, Doug, of Thornton, Jeremy Buchanan, of Ventura, Ryan Buchanan, of Burlington, and Tami Ramon and Dan Young, of Nora Springs; five great-grandchildren, Hailey Grell, Dalton Grell, Jacob Ramon, Emma Ramon and Danielle Bolz; brothers, Fred Buchanan, of Great Falls, Mont., and Robert Buchanan, of Marshalltown; sister, Betty Piper, of Marshalltown; and extended family, Chuck Waage, of Fertile, and Mike Waage, of Mason City, Emily Rick, of San Diego, Calif., Tony Waage, of Iowa City, and Cassie Gambel, of Forest City; special pets, Maggie, Daisy and Jax; and several nieces and nephews.

Sophocles ‘Soph’ Dimitri Marty, M.D.

 

MASON CITY — Sophocles “Soph” Dimitri Marty, M.D., was born on Feb. 20, 1929, and died on May 13, 2007, at the age of 78.

 

Survived by his wife of 57 years, Rachel, and a sister, Theodora. He was father of four children, Lucinda, Karen (Mark Filipi), Thorin (Catherine Lageson), and Rebecca (Paul Conklin) and grandfather to six grandchildren. Soph will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

 

Soph worked as a dermatologist in Mason City for 37 years. Self-described as “A Zit and Wart Doctor,” he always had time for more than just “hello” and was beloved by patients and friends for his kind demeanor.

 

Also, many of his friends and patients knew of his great love for trains. A busy model railroader and photographer, he was often seen with a camera. His favorite photographic subjects were the city of Mason City, the Mason City and Clear Lake trolley line, Iowa Traction Railroad, and the Denver, Rio Grande and Western railroad.

 

In celebration of Soph’s life, his family and friends will gather for a memorial service to be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at the First Congregational Church, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Patti Aurand officiating.

CHANDLER, Ariz. —James “Jim” R. Anderson, 64, of Chandler Ariz., formerly from Mason City, passed away on July 28, 2007, at the Valley of the Sun Hospice Center after a battle with chronic lung disease.

 

Jim is preceded in death by his father, Robert Anderson and his mother and step-father, Luella and Earl Miltenberger.

 

Jim is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara; son, Scott (Kim) Anderson; daughter, Tracy (Dax) Austin; eight grandchildren, Justin, Heather, Adam, Daniel, Holden, Cooper, Wyatt and Colton; former daughter-in-law, Kimberly; brother, Dick (Vicki) Miltenberger; and sister, Mary Ann (Fred) Burnett.

 

Jim was born and raised in Iowa and moved to Arizona in 1982. Always a salesman, Jim joined the Arizona lottery as a sales Representative. For 14 years he made many friends among his retail customers and fellow employees.

 

He will be remembered for his quick wit, his bright blue eyes, big smile and a friendly nature.

 

We will wish him a farewell and celebrate his life at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary, 10940 E Chandler Heights Road, Chandler, Ariz.
