Evelyn M. Waggener

FOREST CITY — Evelyn M. Waggener, age 91, of Forest City, died Wednesday, (June 27, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Wayne Hagen officiating. Private family inurnment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

There will be no visitation.

Evelyn Marguerite Waggener was born in Forest City, Iowa, on Nov. 12, 1915, the daughter of Joseph and Esther (Lemme) Charlson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church and received her education in rural school near her home.

On Dec. 8, 1936, she was married to Leslie Sorensen at the Scandinavian Methodist Church in Forest City. The couple farmed north of Forest City for many years until Leslie’s death on Jan. 6, 1981.

Evelyn married Willard Waggener on Sept. 10, 1982. The couple divided their time between Forest City and Mesa, Ariz.

Evelyn was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, the Immanuel Lutheran Church Women, a member of the Leland Senior Citizens Club and an associate member of Victory Lutheran Church in Mesa, Ariz. She was an excellent seamstress and continued knitting and crocheting her whole life. Willard passed away in 1990.

From that time, Evelyn made her home in Forest City until entering the Concord Care Center in Garner in 2002. She passed away at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa on Wednesday, June 27, 2007.

Evelyn is survived by a daughter and her husband, JoAnn and James Schloe of Hugo, Minn., and two grandsons, Timothy (Jennifer) Schloe of Vadnais Heights, Minn., and Mark (Mollie) Schloe of Apple Valley, Minn., and two great-granddaughters, Patricia and Catherine.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Leslie and Willard.

Helen S. Halverson

OSAGE — Helen S. Halverson, age 99, of Osage, died Friday (June 29, 2007) at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 3, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be at the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church.

Helen was born Jan. 28, 1908, to Gottlieb and Libby (Fell) Mauser near La Porte City. She moved with her parents to a farm in Mitchell County at the age of four years, where she lived most of her adult life. She graduated from Osage High School and then worked at various office jobs.

Helen was united in marriage to Ben Halverson on March 6, 1934, at her parents’ home near New Haven. They farmed in the Orchard area until 1942, when they purchased a farm near McIntire, where they lived until their retirement to Osage in 1972. Helen moved to Leroy, Minn., in June 2006.

Helen is survived by three daughters, Nancy (Terry) Fitzpatrick of Lynnville, Bonnie (Max) Wagner of Eagan, Minn., Kathy (Jim) Bartels of Stewartville, Minn.; one son, Jim Halverson of Montrose; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Connie Mauser of Osage, Jeanette Halverson of Lodi, Wis., and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ben; a daughter-in-law, Linda Halverson; four brothers; and two sisters.

John J. Campbell

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — John J. Campbell, 67, of Battle Creek, Mich., passed away Wednesday (June 27, 2007) at his home.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1939, in Mason City, Iowa, to John A. and Helen B. (Carroll) Campbell.

He graduated from Holy Family High School, Mason City, and attended the University of Iowa for two years. He married Shayne A. Mayo on Jan. 17, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nev.; she survives.

John and Shayne moved to Battle Creek in 2004 from California where he was employed as a manager of a medical warehouse, drove a bobtail truck, and owned the E-Z Mail Box Co. in Lakewood, Calif. John was an avid golfer.

In the late 1960s to early 1970s, John was known as the “Banker”. He ran the graft bank for Southern California. It didn’t matter what time of day or night, he took great pride in knowing that he could get the graft or hip prosthesis where it needed to be in time.

He is also survived by sons, John Johnson of Shell, Wyo.; and James Vache of Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Jean Marie Dahn, of Fertile, Iowa; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by this parents and a son, Robert Campbell.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

MASON CITY — Dorothy E. Beinke, 86, of 1710 N. Hampshire Ave., died Saturday (June 30, 2007) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2007, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Steve Palo officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2007, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Dorothy E. Beinke was born on March 20, 1921, in Iowa Falls, the daughter of Edward and Flora (Evers) Weyrauch. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School with the Class of 1938.

Dorothy was a member of the Mason City Senior Activity Center and volunteered there whenever needed. She also served on the board of AARP for many years. Dorothy worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 26 years as a secretary for the district engineer.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Myron Beinke on Nov. 23, 1974, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

 She enjoyed knitting at her home and made many beautiful afghans, which were appreciated by her family. Dorothy loved to travel with her husband to various places.

Dorothy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

She will be missed by her husband, Myron Beinke, of Mason City; two sons, Arlyn (Karen) Ristau, of Waverly, Dennis (Cheryl) Ristau, of Eleva, Wis.; one daughter, Nancy (Greg) Scott, of Camarillo, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Janice Carl, of Marinette, Wis., Peggy (Jim) Bingham, of Aurora, Colo., Barbara (Nick) Stricker, of Fort Dodge; 15 grandchildren, Randy, Chris, Tami, Shelly, Christine, Cathleen, Fredrick, Jenny, Allison, Elizabeth, Joe, Julie, Jon, Eric, and Nicole; 16 great-grandchildren, Leah, Chloe, Reeve, Ashley, Chandler, Christopher, Eric, William, Jessica, Analeise, Abigail, Blake, Cody, Deegan, Skyler, and Zachary, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one daughter, Barbara Treloar.

Frederick Junior Mulhern


 

MASON CITY — Frederick Junior Mulhern, 84, of 1221 S. Washington Ave. died Sunday (July 1, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

 

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2007, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

 

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. at the Hogan- Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

 

Frederick Junior Mulhern was born on March 1, 1923, in Worth County, Deer Creek Township, the son of Frederick Henry and Allie May (Veverka) Mulhern. He graduated from Mason City High School.

 

Fred was united in marriage to Alice Grein on June 21, 1942, in Albert Lea, Minn. To this union four children were born.

 

 Fred enlisted into the United States on Navy Sept. 16, 1942 and was honorably discharged on Dec. 15, 1945.

 

 He worked for International Harvester, retiring after 33 years. After retirement, he worked 13 years for Hy-Line Hatchery in maintenance.

 

Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and he was an avid sports fan. His greatest love was spending time with family and friends. Fred was a member of the VFW and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

 

Fred is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Mulhern, of Mason City; children, Priscilla Pappas, of Mason City, Tina (Robert) Hudspeth, of Forest City, Mick (Terri) Mulhern, of Urbandale; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister, Colleen Seel, of Des Moines, dog, Furby; cat, Muffy; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Karrie Willier; sons-in-law, George Pappas and Ron Riser; brother, Marvin Mulhern; and sister, Mildred Roth.

Edwin H. Selky

 

RACINE, Wis. — Edwin H. Selky, 78, passed away on Thursday (June 14, 2007) at his home in Racine.

 

Ed was born in Racine on Dec. 29, 1928, to Herman and Mary (nee Boblitz) Selky.

 

He was united in marriage to the former Bette E. Lampman in Colorado Springs, Colo., on April 6, 1951.

 

Ed served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Era.

 

He retired from Cooper Industries after eight years. Ed was a member of Teamsters Local 43.

 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

 

Survivors include his wife, Bette E. Selky; children, Daniel (Beverly) Selky, of Garner, and their daughter Barbara Jo and her husband, Tracy Reimann and son, Jacob Daniel of Waconia, Minn.; daughter, Kelli Jane and her husband, Dr. James Dugan and their children, Ava Grace and Zachary James of Indianapolis, Ind., Debora M. Gault (Selky) of Waterford, Wis. and Douglas E. (Joan) Selky of Racine,Wis.; grandchildren, Emelia Grace Selky and Lillian Faith Selky; and sisters, Alma Sucharda, of Racine and Ida Anderson, of Florida. Ed is also survived by other relatives and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Albert Selky and Robert Selky.

Harriet Aulda Oudekerk

BRITT — Harriet Aulda Oudekerk, 92, of Britt, formerly of Forest City, passed away Sunday (July 1, 2007) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City surrounded by her family.

Funeral services for Harriet Oudekerk will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2007, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Britt with Pastor Bob Fleming officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, July 4, 2007, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Harriet, the daughter of Henry and Grace Nordman Knapper, was born May 22, 1915, in Woden, Iowa. She attended country school in rural Woden.

On April 2, 1937, Harriet was united in marriage with John Oudekerk in Britt. Harriet was a homemaker and also worked side-by-side with John on the farm until their retirement.

Harriet was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Britt, where she was active in the Ladies Missionary Fellowship and taught Sunday School.

Harriet is survived by four children: Wilma Harms, of Waterloo, Dale (Donna) Oudekerk, of Hudson, Robert (Judy) Oudekerk, of Britt, Patricia (Roger) Moklestad, of Thompson; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Montieth and Stena Vessels; two brothers, Charles Knapper and Dale Knapper; and other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in January of 2001; her parents; children, Jon and Paul; son-in-law, Floyd Harms Jr.; sister, Pauline; and brothers, John and Herman.

ROCKFORD — Sally (Hjelle) Peterson, 53, of Rockford, died Tuesday (July 3, 2007) in a motor vehicle accident.

Sally Peterson was born Oct. 26, 1953, in Mason City, the daughter of Irvin Soma and Bonnie Gardinier. She attended Mason City High School and graduated in 1972.

She married David Peterson on June 3, 2006, at Roadside Chapel in Clear Lake. She worked at North Iowa Transition Center and was working on her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Sally enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, going out to eat, puzzles, watching detective shows and Hannah Montana. She also loved collecting angels and spending time with her dog, “Valentino.”

Sally is survived by her husband, David Peterson, of Rockford; her children, Cheri (Hjelle) Dixon and husband, Chad, of Houston, Texas, Polly (Hjelle) Montgomery and husband, Rick, Ben Hjelle and wife, Missie, of Forest City, Lori Walczyk and husband, John, of Iowa City, Jesi Peterson, of Rockford, and Jodi Peterson, of Iowa City; nine grandchildren: Josh Walczyk, Kimberly Dixon, Cierra Montgomery, Alex Walczyk, Israel Montgomery, Bradley Hjelle, Ben Hjelle Jr., Delanie Peterson and Brennen Hjelle; her mother, Bonnie Gardinier; one sister, Stephanie Chalgren; several half brothers and half sisters; and a very close cousin, Barb Erhart. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Sally is preceded in death by her father, Irvin Soma; her brother, Michael Gardinier; her aunt, Marion Gardinier; and her uncle Clinton “Tink” Gardinier. She is also preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, Della and Lauretz Peterson.

BRISTOW — Eugene F. Salge, 84, of 18627 170th Street, Bristow, died Tuesday (July 3, 2007) at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2007, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the South Vilmar Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene; and will continue one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
