Virginia Ann Juhlin

MASON CITY — Virginia Ann Juhlin, 84, of Mason City, died Friday (July 20, 2007) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

The family of Virginia Ann Juhlin has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City or the retirement fund for the Sisters of Presentation in Dubuque in her memory.

Virginia Ann Juhlin was born on July 11, 1923, in Mason City, the daughter of Thomas and Nora (Kelly) Chute. Virginia attended and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in Mason City. After completing her schooling she worked for the State Brand Creamery in Mason City where she met her future husband, Darold Juhlin.

She was united in marriage to Darold O. Juhlin on April 15, 1942, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City, and to this union five children was born. Darold preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 2005.

After their marriage Virginia was a stay-at-home mom for several years taking care of her family. Virginia later did volunteer work for the hot lunch program at the St. Joseph Catholic School. She began her career working as a nurse’s aide for St. Joseph Hospital, and as a surgical assistant for Park Hospital, and continued to work in the surgery department for North Iowa Medical Center, and until her retirement was an assistant for the anesthesiologists at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, canning fruits and vegetables, gardening, and fishing, was a sports enthusiast for Newman Catholic High School, and was an avid Hawkeye fan, wintering in Phoenix and Apache Junction, Ariz., but her greatest love and enjoyment was her family, grandchildren, and her loving dog, Bridgette.

Virginia was very active in her church at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City and was a member of the church circle, Newman Boosters and auxiliary, and was also a member of the Mason City Country Club.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Dr. Jerry (Fran) Juhlin of Mason City, Jeanne (Dennis) Vrba of Mason City, Dr. James (Rhonda) Juhlin of Clear Lake, Dr. Jon (Caty) Juhlin of Cedar Falls, and Janis (James) Wellington of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, Dr. Todd (Janae) Juhlin of Mason City, Timothy (Susan) Juhlin of Tallahassee, Fla., Dr. Theresa Juhlin of Middleton, Wis., Marcey (Christopher) Hand of Cedar Falls, Mary Jo Vrba of Mason City, Mark Vrba of Mason City, Erin Juhlin of Iowa City, Kerry Juhlin of Coralville, Molly Juhlin of Cedar Falls, and J.P. Juhlin of Cedar Falls; five great-grandchildren, Zachary Juhlin, Derek, Brandon, and Luke Hand, and Camden Juhlin; a brother, Robert (Mary Jean) Chute, of Naples, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Roland (Ardyth) Juhlin, of Fairmont, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Greta Brahm, of Kettering, Ohio; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Darold O. Juhlin; brothers, Gerald (Esther) Chute, Jerome (Ireta) Chute, Kenneth (Marvel) Chute, Edward (Agnes) Chute, Harold (Betty Lou) Chute, Merle Chute who died in infancy, and Donald (Alberta) Chute; sisters, Lucille (Cedric) Connoll, Sister Jeanne Marie “Margaret” Chute, and Marie Chute.

William ‘Bill’ J. Rodamaker

CHARLES CITY — William “Bill” J. Rodamaker, 88, of Charles City, died on Friday (July 20, 2007) at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 23, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with Father Carl A. Ries presiding. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Military honors will be accorded by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

William J. Rodamaker was born Feb. 1, 1919, in Charles City to Harold J. and Beulah (Trask) Rodamaker. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic school, graduating in 1937.

Bill honorably and faithfully served his country during World War II in the Army aviation engineers. Bill worked for 34 years as a tool grinder at White Farm Manufacturing in Charles City, retiring in 1975. He also farmed for 24 years in the Floyd County area.

Bill was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1419, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1011 and the VFW Post No. 3914, all in Charles City.

Bill loved farming, fishing, especially near Grand Rapids, Minn., carpentry, woodworking, cement work, as well as dancing, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Bill is survived by his special friend, Helen Hoel, of Charles City; a sister, Velma Sinnwell, of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Harold (Mae) Rodamaker, of Charles City, and friend, Cletus Shimek, of Charles City.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilma Rodamaker on Aug. 20, 1986.

ELDORA — Carolyn Braga, 67, of Eldora, died Thursday (July 19, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with private inurnment at a later date at the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

CLARION — John “Jack” D. Brooks, age 82, of Clarion, died Friday (July 20, 2007) at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion.

Dale L. Kellogg

IONIA — Dale L. Kellogg, 88, of Ionia died Friday (July 20, 2007) at his home in Ionia.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (July 24, 2007) at New Life Community Church, 1960 Gilbert St., in Charles City, with the Rev. Mike McAbee officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City. Military honors will be accorded by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Dale Leslie Kellogg was born April 25, 1919, in rural Floyd County, to Luverne and Luella (Voohres) Kellogg. He attended country school in Floyd County.

Dale honorably and faithfully served his country during World War II, in the Army Air Corps of Engineers. He received the American Theater Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his discharge from the service he returned home and was united in marriage to Wilma E. Martin on March 12, 1949, in Charles City.

Dale was employed as a truck driver with Takin Brothers Trucking in Charles City for 33 years, retiring in 1981. He also farmed for most of his life in Floyd and Chickasaw Counties.

Dale was a life member of both the VFW Post No. 3914 and American Legion Post No. 0174, both in Charles City, and he was a member of the Teamsters’ Union.

Dale loved farming, fishing, hunting, the outdoors and gardening. He was very patriotic and enjoyed attending his VFW and Legion reunions.

Dale will be best remembered as a man who was hard working, caring, smart, tough and rugged.

Dale is survived by his six children, Leroy (Lynette) Kellogg of Ionia, Mike (Brenda) Kellogg of Riverside, Bruce (Sharon) Kellogg of Ionia, Larry (Diane) Kellogg of Ionia, Sandra (Daniel) Bucknell of Sumner, and Leslie (Cynthia) of Ionia; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Marvin (Thelma) Kellogg and Donald (Betty) Kellogg, both of Charles City.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilma Kellogg, on Nov. 8, 1997; one sister, Darlene; two brothers, Earl and Lyle.

Muriel L. Schulz

KLEMME — Muriel L. Schulz, 81, of Klemme, died Friday (July 20, 2007) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Muriel Leorene Schulz, the daughter of Chester Ray and Leorene Anona (Lipka) Stille, was born April 25, 1926, at Mason City. She graduated from Garner High School in 1944 and then went to Washington, D.C., where she worked in the U.S. Department of the Navy. She later studied fine arts and music at a junior college in Boise, Idaho, then returned to Garner and worked for the REC.

On Aug. 25, 1948, Muriel was united in marriage to Robert F. Schulz at the Methodist Church in Garner. They made their home east of Klemme where they farmed until retiring in 1985. Muriel also taught piano in the Klemme area. They continued to live on the farm until 2002, when they moved into the Klemme Apartments. She enjoyed camping, square dancing, sewing, quilting, painting and reading.

Muriel was an active member of the Klemme United Methodist Church where she served as choir director for 26 years, church organist for about 50 years, and was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, serving in many offices, including district president. Muriel, along with her husband, Bob, also participated in many mission trips with County Cousins.

She is survived by her children, Glenn (Donna) Schulz of Storm Lake, Carol (Terry) Tedder of Glenwood and Karen (Byron) Thada of Crawfordsville, Ind.; nine grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; her sister, Val Anderson of Garner; a brother-in-law, Donald Funk of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Frances Neuberger of Garner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, Sept. 17, 2002; her parents; and a sister, June Funk.

Elston Edward Factor

PLYMOUTH — Elston Edward Factor, 84, of 24950 Thrush Ave., Plymouth, died Friday (July 20, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Interment will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly, with a scriptural wake at 7 p.m.

Elston was born July 28, 1922, in Plymouth, the son of Edward and Barbara (Novak) Factor. He graduated from Plymouth High School.

Elston entered the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on the USS Knight, a destroyer.

He married Helena Wallace Sept. 2, 1944, in New York City, New York. After being discharged from the Navy he attended a mechanical school in New York.

The couple moved back to Plymouth, where Elston went to work for Ong’s John Deere in Mason City and later started working for Massey Ferguson in Mason City where he became the service manager for all their satellite stores. In 1966, they moved to Mason City where they lived until 1978 at which time they moved back to Plymouth. Elston retired in 1983.

Elston enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, working on lawnmowers, gardening, raising glads, taking his wife out for lunch and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a former member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, Plymouth, and the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly, Iowa and the Mason City VFW Post No. 733.

He is survived by his wife, Helena Factor, Plymouth; two daughters, Evemarie Zimmerman and her fiancé, Steven Folkerts, Mason City, and Michele Collins and her husband, Kenneth, Grafton; four grandchildren, Douglas Zimmerman and his wife, Charity, Mason City, Wallace Zimmerman and his wife, Shanna, Mason City, Melinda Woodward and her special friend, Scott Woodward, Mason City, and Amanda Rose-Mwakiluma and her husband, Ntully, Nora Springs; seven great-grandchildren, Michael Zimmerman, T.J. Dunn, Spencer Woodward, Jordis Woodward, Alexander Rose, Samantha Rose and Dmitris Mwakiluma.

Elston was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Jerome Factor; sister, VaLerie Carlson; and a brother-in-law, Albert Carlson.

MASON CITY — Lloyd M. Butler, 91, of Mason City, died Friday (July 20, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Arlene Ann Jacobson

MASON CITY — Arlene Ann Jacobson, 91, of Mason City, formerly of Clarksville, was born the daughter of Ernst and Bertha (Freese) Fink on Nov. 27, 1915, Bremer County, near Tripoli. She was baptized into the Christian faith on Dec. 26, 1915, and confirmed on April 13, 1930, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tripoli. She graduated from the Tripoli High School in 1934.

Arlene continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and an additional year in Boulder, Colo. Arlene returned to her home town and taught school prior to marriage and she also worked at the Interstate Power Co. as a bookkeeper and cashier.

Arlene was united in marriage with Raymond E. Jacobson on Oct. 31, 1955, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. They made their home in Clarksville, where they owned and operated Ray’s Bylo Grocery Store.

Arlene died Friday (July 20, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, from natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Jacobson in 1975; her parents, Ernst and Bertha Fink; one sister, Lydia Schiek; and two brothers, Elroy and Arnold Fink.

MASON CITY — Lloyd M. Butler, 91, of Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living, Mason City, died Friday, (July 20, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

 Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Lloyd Marvin Butler was born on Aug. 12, 1915, near Lake Mills, the son of Albert and Edith (Moen) Butler. Lloyd’s parents passed away when he was 4 years old, and his aunt and uncle, Mary and John Groath, raised him.

He married Alice Johnson, on March 20, 1937, in Algona. They lived in Emmons, Minn., for three years and moved to Forest City in 1940. In 1942 they moved to Mason City. 

Lloyd worked for Standard Oil for 34 years. During those years, Lloyd developed a strong friendship with his customers because of his positive attitude and good natured personality.

Lloyd liked being with his family and was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He had been a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa for 12 years, where he enjoyed the fellowship of many friends. In 2004, the Iowa Medical Society Alliance recognized Lloyd as the recipient of the Iowa Volunteer Health Service Award.

Survivors include his two sons, Lowell L. Butler, and wife, Ellamae, of Mason City, and LeRoy E. Butler, and wife, Judy, of Clear Lake; grandchildren: Perry L. Butler, and wife, Danette, of Southlake, Texas; Jan Schmall, and husband, Dr. Robert, of Cedar Rapids; Michael Butler, and wife, Jolene, of Mason City; and Julie Eaton, and husband, Jason, of Mason City; great- grandchildren: Mitchell Butler, of Ankeny, Benjamin Butler, of South Lake, Texas, Astyn Davis, of Irving, Texas, Jacob Schmall, and Noah Schmall, of Cedar Rapids, Courtney Eaton, Sydney Eaton, Tyler Eaton, Benjamin Butler, Bryce Butler, and Samuel Butler, all of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, on April 19, 1994; his parents; two sisters; and three brothers.

Anna Mae was born on Feb. 16, 1917, in Dougherty, the daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Glackin) Dougherty. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Dougherty in 1935. She was married to Cletus C. Hepp on Oct. 15, 1946, in Dougherty. She moved to Mason City with her husband in 1946. She was a homemaker and was also a cook for Newman Elementary School for 15 years, retiring in 1972. They moved to Ocala, Fla. in 1972, where they lived until returning to Mason City in 1984.

 

Anna Mae was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Mary Magdalen circle. She volunteered at church, the Knights of Columbus, and Newman Catholic Elementary. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. She loved her family and home, which she took care of with great pride. She lived at Good Shepherd the past two years and greatly appreciated the care and friendship she received from the staff and residents.

 

Anna is survived by her daughter, Barbara Sasseen and husband, Keith, of Ottumwa; son, Patrick J. Hepp and wife, Janet, of Arvada, Colo.; daughter, Margaret Simonson, and husband, Michael, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; grandchildren: Paul (Lorrie) Powers-Wettestad, Lara (Cary) Justmann, Phil Wettestad, Jeremy (Jennifer) Hepp, Celia Hepp, Katie (Chris) Wulkow, Joseph Crawford, Timothy Crawford; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Allan, Katelyn, and Michael; a sister, Patricia Scholl, Rockwell, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cletus, in 2005, and brother, James Dougherty.

GARNER — Merlyn E. Upmeyer, 86, of Garner, died Sunday (July 22, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Merlyn Ernest Upmeyer, the son of Ralph and Alice (Griffin) Upmeyer, was born on Dec. 29, 1920, on a farm southwest of Garner. He attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and graduated from Garner High School in 1940. He continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames.

On June 2, 1946, he married Maxine Stokesbary at the Methodist Church in Garner. They lived on the home place southwest of Garner where Merlyn farmed. Merlyn also worked at Iowa Mold Tooling in Garner for 18 years, retiring in 1987. In November of 2005, Merlyn and Maxine moved into Garner.

Merlyn loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed photography, singing in church choir, playing his tuba in the Old Timers Band in Garner and working in his shop.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Gideon’s Society and served on the Garner Creamery Board for a number of years. 

Merlyn is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Maxine, of Garner; four children, Rebecca (Darrell) Lucht of Hulbert, Okla., Daniel (Susie) Upmeyer, of Alamogordo, N.M., Linda (Bob) Wages, of Bixby, Okla. and Jill (Marc) Dean, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Heather (Javier) Lopez, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Dylan (Kristi) Lucht, of Tahlequah, Okla., Jade (Brian) Winfrey, of Orlando, Fla., Daniella (Donnie) Williams, of Tulsa, Okla. and David Wages, of Corpus Christi, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, L.C. Spencer, of Clarion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Delwyn; and two sisters, Arlene Trail and Ruth Spencer.

Marjorie married Kenneth Hagen on Oct. 28, 1949. Together, they dairy farmed near Scarville until they retired in 1980 and moved to a home near Forest City.

 

Marjorie was a loving, caring and devoted wife. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, especially participating in the choir, circle and serving wherever she was needed.

 

She enjoyed quilting, gardening, and was secretary for the Olson family reunion for many years.

 

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; brother-in-law, Alvin Hagen and sister-in-law, Myrtle Hagen, of Scarville; along with several cousins and other relatives and friends.
