construction
superintendent.
Gordon
was a
member
of St.
Joseph’s
Catholic
Church,
Knights
of
Columbus,
VFW and
the
local
carpenters
union.
He
enjoyed
traveling,
gardening,
woodworking,
golfing,
bowling
and
sporting
events.
Gordon
gave
generously
of his
time and
talent
to help
his
family,
friends
and
community.

He
received
his
elementary
education

Milford
Community
School.
The
family
moved to
Mason
City in
1927,
and
Alfred
continued
his
education
graduating
from
Mason
City
High
School.
After
completing
his
schooling,
he began
working
for
Farrer
Upholstery
in Mason
City.
He was
united
in
marriage
to Opal
S.
Martinson
on Oct.
13,
1940, in
the
Salem
Lutheran
Church
in Lake
Mills.
She
preceded
him in
death on
Sept.
28,
2002.
In 1940,
Alfred
began
his
career
as a
machinist,
working
for Leo
Berry at
Berry
Machine
Company
in Mason
City,
and in
the mid
1960s he
purchased
Berry
Machine
Company,
and
remained
active
in the
business
until
the mid
1980s.
Alfred
was an
expert
machinist
and
woodworker,
and also
enjoyed
fishing
in
Minnesota
and
Canada
for
several
years.
He was a
member
of
Trinity
Lutheran
Church
in Mason
City,
and also
belonged
to the
Elks
Lodge in
Mason
City for
several
years.
Left to

his
memory
are his

football.

retiring.
She
loved to
spend
time
with her
children
and
grandchildren.

fishing

bullheads
with Ben
was a
perfect
way to
spend
time
together.
Helen
liked
doing
handwork
of all
kinds —
sewing,
crocheting
and
embroidering.
She
enjoyed
caring
for her
flower
gardens.
In
August
of 1996,
Helen
moved
from
Hayfield
to Swea
City to
be
closer
to
family.
A year
later,
in
August
of 1997,
she made
her home
at the
Valley
Vue Care
Center
in
Armstrong.
Helen is
survived
by two
sons and
their
wives:

WODEN — Surrounded by his loving family, William L. Gerdes, 79, of Woden, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woden with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery with military rites by the Woden Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
William Leroy Gerdes, the son of William T. and Bertha (Gerdes) Gerdes, was born April 13, 1927, on a farm east of Woden. He attended the rural schools of Bingham Township and graduated from Woden High School in 1945. Bill served his country in the U.S. Army from July 1945 to January 1947.
On Sept. 10, 1949, he married Velma Mildred Geerdes at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woden. They made their home in Woden where they raised their five sons. Bill worked in the family construction business, Gerdes Construction, building many homes, business buildings and other landmarks in the Woden area. Bill remained active in the business with his brother, Dennis, for many years. Most recently, he was helping his sons in their construction and woodworking businesses.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and fishing trips to Canada and Minnesota with family and friends.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He had served as mayor of Woden and was a member and past commander of the Woden American Legion.
Bill is survived by his wife, Velma, of Woden; five sons, Gary (Ann) Gerdes of Forest City, Tim (Lori) Gerdes of Lake Mills, Dale (Kristin) Gerdes of Forest City, Steve (special friend, Sharla Krein) of Crystal Lake and Bruce (Christine) Gerdes of Buffalo Center; 12 grandchildren, Jodie (Al) Steen, Matthew Gerdes, Andrew Gerdes, Lucas Gerdes, Jamie Gerdes, Christopher (Crystal) Gerdes, Joshua Gerdes, Caleb Gerdes, Justin (Miho) Gerdes, Heather (Andy) May, Jonathon Gerdes and Zachary Gerdes; three great-grandchildren, Nicole Steen, Dillon Gerdes and Taylor May; two brothers, Paul (Betty) Gerdes of Woden and James (Helen) Gerdes of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

OWATONNA, Minn. —Charles A. Frelund, 70, of Owatonna, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2007) at his home with his family by his side after a 3-year journey with cancer.
A memorial service is set for 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Owatonna with Father Michael Tippet officiating the service.

Born Charles Andrew Frelund, son of Andrew and Marie Frelund-Pfeil in Mason City, Iowa, Charles (Charlie) Frelund received his BS degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and later received his masters degree in fine art in 1969. He began teaching in Cedar Falls Public School as an art teacher and became art department chair from 1959-1967. He taught art at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and was the chairman of the art department until 1976. He then worked at Manzano Day School in Albuquerque, N.M., until 1993. Charlie and his family moved to Owatonna in 1999, and he taught for several years at OHS and Owatonna Junior High. Painting, drawing, and sculpture were very important facets of his life and he exhibited his work throughout his adult life. He will be remembered as a teacher as well as a practicing artist.
Charlie loved to spend time at the family’s lake home in northern Minnesota, reading, writing poetry and spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Sandy, and their children, Andrew Judd Frelund, Charles Jon Frelund and Jessica Frelund, all of Owatonna, and his son, Tony Frelund, and stepsons, Monte (Kelly) Ballejos and Elfego (Raquel) Ballejos, all of Albuquerque, N.M. Additional survivors include his brother, Warren (Sue) Frelund, of Mason City, and several nieces and their families as well as several cousins.
Charlie is preceded in death by parents, infant daughter, Kathy, and his first wife, Louise Garufis.
Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Owatonna, Hospice or the donor’s choice.

Lillian Marianne “Toodles” Sult was born north of Marble Rock, Union Township, Floyd County, the only daughter of Earl Henry “Ben” and Margaret Elizabeth (Luther) Thieman, and passed away on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City.
She received her education in the Marble Rock Public Schools, graduating in 1947.
On Nov. 25, 1948, she was united in marriage to Weldon Fox Sult at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock.
They lived in Des Moines while he attended barber school and she was employed as a candy girl at a movie theater. Following his graduation they returned to Marble Rock where they enjoyed 58 years together.
Toodles’ family was her number one priority. She actively supported her family in their activities and always said that “she and Weldon were the most fortunate people to have such wonderful grandkids.” They will remember her for the many things she has provided, especially her cooking, and the memories of the flavors, smells, and warmth from her kitchen.
She loved entertaining, singing, dancing, and playing cards.
She was actively involved in the life of the Marble Rock community, touching generations of lives. She was a bus driver for the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School District for 38 years. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 387, UMW, Floyd County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Unit, Charles City Women of the Moose, Monday, Wednesday Bridge Club, various bowling teams, former member of the Mason City Sweet Adelines for over 20 years, and a current member of the Heartland Harmony for the past five years.
Living family members include her loving husband of 58 years, Weldon, of Marble Rock; a daughter, Nancy (Larry) Glubka, of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Joel (Rosemary) Sult, of Allison, and Jon (Rhonda) Sult, of Marble Rock; seven grandchildren, Kelly Sult, Casey Sult, (Adam) and Kara Halford, Jordan Glubka, Dustin Sult, Dena Sult, and Lilly Ann Glubka.
Extended family members include her sister-in-law, Carol Thieman, of Marble Rock; two nieces, Jennifer Thieman and Penny Thieman; and one nephew, Ryan “Ben” (Kellie) Thieman.
Toodles was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William Thieman.

John Roger Kamm was born on Jan. 26, 1937, at Rudd, Iowa, the son of John J. and Velma M. (Felix) Kamm. He graduated from Rudd High School in 1955.
John served in the U.S. Army with Headquarters Co., 4th TTCC, from Jan. 27, 1956, to Nov, 12, 1957. After leaving the service, he went to Iowa State University where he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1963.
He lived in Muscatine for a time, then moved back to Rudd from 1968 to 1972. He then moved to Garner in 1972, where he worked for Garner R.E.C. for seven years as a surveyor.
John was united in marriage to Carol F. Hundt on Aug. 9, 1974, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Wilton, Iowa, in 1979 and John worked as an engineering tech for Stanley Consultants, Inc. in Muscatine for 20 years, retiring in 1993. In 1994, John and Carol moved to their present home in Nashua.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, home projects, motorcycling and lecturing his children. John was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He never gave up on life or those closest to him.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; four daughters, Margaret Kamm, of Wapello, Jacqueline (Cliff) Bohling, of Solon, Melanie Paarman, of Wilton, and Julie (David) Schiele, of Enoree, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, Kama Wollenhaupt; April Bohling, Matt Bohling, Danielle Pedersen, Brooke Rohde, and Whitney Bohling; Caleb Paarman and Preston Paarman; Michael Schiele, Megan Schiele and Marcia Schiele; four great-grandsons, Mason Denny, Triston Trujillo, Ty Schiele and Demarco Dudley; two brothers, Robert Kamm, of Pryor, Okla. and Marion “Jack” (Norma) Kamm, of Charles City.

Ardis was born in Mason City on Feb. 14, 1932, to Gaylord and Viola Corinne (Murray) Hegland. She was raised by her grandmother, Ella Gardner.
She attended First Christian Church as a child and was baptized on April 9, 1944, and has been a lifelong member. She attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1950.
She worked at several local stores before returning to North Iowa Area Community College to receive her business diploma. After finishing school at NIACC, on Jan, 1, 1980, she went to work for the Materials Department for the Iowa Department of Transportation. She retired on March 31, 1995. She always said the thing that made the job so great was the people she worked with.
Ardis married Bob L. Paulson on Aug. 11, 1951, at the First Christian Church in Mason City. To this union four children were born: John, Ronald, Wendy and Nancy. Ardis’ family was the most important thing in her life.
She is survived by her husband, Bob L. Paulson, of Mason City; children, John L. Paulson, and wife, Janice, of Forest Lake, Minn., Ronald A. Paulson, of Roseville, Minn., and Nancy L. Paulson, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Becky Mann, Stacy Mann and Bill Mann; great-grandchild, Katelyn Star Mann; brothers, Edward G. Lembcke, of Hampton, Va., and Max Hegland, and wife, Gloria, of Mason City; sister, Rosella M. Crandall, and husband, Leonard, of Waterloo.

Alpha Orlette (Teigen) Hanson was born on Dec. 2, 1921, in Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Anna Louise (Tweed) Teigen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Winnebago County. She was educated in the rural Lake Mills schools.
On Nov. 23, 1940, Alpha was married to Kenneth L. Hanson at Charles City, Iowa. She was a farm wife for many years, and was also an employee at Fleetguard for 20 years.
Alpha was active at Salem Lutheran Church, enjoyed gardening, her pets, her beloved grandchildren, and her many friends in the community.
Alpha is survived by one sister, Viola Andrews, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her children, Larry Hanson, of Minneapolis, Minn., Carolyn Rawlings, and her husband, John, of Lake Mills, Dennis Hanson, and his wife, Kathy, of Lake Mills, and David Hanson, and his wife, Annie, of Lake Mills; seven grandchildren, Scott (Carrie) Hanson, Ross (Paula) Hanson, Amber (Travis) Tubré, Nicole (Larry) Lentz, Eric (Lily) Schroder, Brian Hanson, and Kevin Hanson; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Florence L. Graff was born in Forest City, Iowa, on Oct. 31, 1915, the daughter of Sam and Mary (Willert) Kitner. She received her education in rural school near her home.
On Feb. 22, 1936, she was united in marriage to Marcus Graff at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City. To this marriage 10 children were born.
They farmed west of Forest City for many years. They later left the farm and moved to an acreage near Joice. After Marcus’ death in 1980, Florence made her home in Mason City, where she worked part time for the Salvation Army and the Senior Citizens Center.
She enjoyed caring for her flower gardens, feeding the birds and garage sales. But her greatest enjoyment came when she was visited by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.
Florence is survived by her children: Dennis (Linda) Graff of Mason City; Rodney (Tammy) Graff of Joice; Geraldine Mikelson of Garner; Dolly Skarpness of Mason City; Carol Mathahs of Thompson; Rosemary Green of Austin, Texas; Mrs. Sandra VanDenHul of Mason City; and Sharon Sandell of Mason City. Also surviving are 38 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, June Weaver, of Thompson.

After his retirement in June 1980, Larry worked on base as a security guard contractor.
In his spare time, he enjoyed singing and playing the guitar, building model aircraft and spending time with his six grandchildren.

Leon Donald Eymann
CLEAR LAKE — Leon Donald Eymann, 82, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Jan. 27, 2007) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.
Family will receive friends one hour prior to church services on Wednesday at the church. Following the services, there will be military honors at the church by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Clear Lake.
The family of Leon Donald Eymann has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa West Campus Dialysis Center in his memory.
According to his wishes, his body was cremated.

Leon Donald Eymann, was born on August 2, 1924, in Forest City, Iowa, the son of L.K. and Vesta (Lewis) Eymann. Don attended school in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School. He enlisted into the Army Air Corps during World War II and served overseas in the European Theater and was a co-pilot on a B-17 bomber. He was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant.
After his honorable discharge, Don attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Don returned to Forest City, to join his brother John in the family business (Eymann’s) selling cars and John Deere equipment. He moved to Clear Lake in 1986, working as a Realtor for Northern Realty in Clear Lake.
He was united in marriage to Shirley on Aug. 15, 1950, in Mason City, Iowa.
He enjoyed mowing his yard, traveling, fishing, playing cards, hunting, and golfing, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and friends.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and the Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Shirley Eymann of Clear Lake; three children: Suzanne Wright of Oregon City, Ore., Joni Fields and her husband, Dan, of Shorewood, Minn., and Jan Eymann-McConville and her husband, Tim, of Verona, Wis.; five grandchildren: Jenny, Stephanie, Leanna, Tyler, and Kolby. Don is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Hanna and her husband, Tom, of Kensett, as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lewis and John, and two sisters, Pat and Norma.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside with Father Rich Adam officiating.
Visitation is scheduled for 2 until 8 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Church in Riverside and 2 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, also at the church. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today by the Knights of Columbus, with Tuesday prayers at 7:30 p.m., all at the church.

Jacque was born on Dec. 25, 1961 to Marinus and Margaret (Mitchell) Mihm in New Hampton, Iowa. She graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1980 and went on to receive a bachelor of arts degree in marketing from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls in 1984.
Jacque was sales manager for JM Swank Co., in North Liberty for 20 years.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and served as a C.C.D teacher at Holy Trinity.
She was married to Jim Cayton on Aug. 24, 1985, at St. Lucas, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Cayton; three daughters, all at home: Erin, Courtney and Emily Cayton; her father, Marinus Mihm of West Union; brother, Gary and wife, Janice Mihm, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, brother, Billy Mihm and his fiancé, Sandy Hageman, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; her sister, Deb, and her husband, Steve Pesek, of New Hampton, sister, Tammy, and her husband, Al Thornton, of Decorah, her twin sister, Jolene, and her husband, Bill Galligan, of Waverly.
Other survivors include: mother-in-law, Pat Cayton, of Vinton, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and wife, Tracey Cayton, of Cedar Falls, Denise and husband, Tom Mettner, of Lisle, Ill., Kevin and wife, Betty Cayton, of Vinton, Iowa, and Diana Cayton of Elmhurst, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Mihm; and father-in-law, Richard Cayton.

MASON CITY — Howard G. “Howie” Lehn, 88, of 730 N. Carolina Ave. in Mason City, died Friday afternoon (Jan. 26, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Howard Glen Lehn was born on June 20, 1918, in Elba, Neb., the son of William and Edna (Parker) Lehn. He attended and graduated from Elba High School in the class of 1936.
Howard was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps and served his country during World War II as a fighter pilot trainer. After honorably and faithfully serving his designated time, Howard was discharged of his duties from Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
Howie, as he was fondly known by his family and friends, moved to Mason City and met the love of his life and future wife, Eleanor Grace Currier. The couple was united in marriage on Aug. 15, 1953, in Kansas City, Mo. They treasured time spent together while traveling, vegetable and flower gardening, golfing and preparing for and hosting family gatherings, especially during the holidays.
Howie took great pride in providing for his family. He retired in 1980 from the Western Electric Telephone Company, where he was employed for many years as a manager and installer.
Some of Howie’s favorite hobbies and leisure activities included large and small woodworking and remodeling projects, refinishing furniture, bird and squirrel watching, and collecting antiques. He is described by his daughters as a loving, gentle and kind man who was a true role model to not only them but to his grandchildren, as well. He was always willing to assist his family, friends and neighbors. Howie loved spending time outdoors, close to nature and for his own enjoyment, flying as a private pilot.
Howie was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Mason City.
Howie will be dearly missed by his family and friends who have shared in his life.
He is survived by his two daughters, Jeanette (Moore) Dempsey of Bellevue, Neb., and Phyllis (Moore) Waters of Osage Beach, Mo.; his sister, Irene Hayes of Newport News, Va.; his seven grandchildren: Brad (Mary) Dempsey, Cindy (Ed) McManus, Brian Dempsey, Christine Dempsey, Joe Waters, Jason Waters and Jeff (Anissa) Waters. He will also be a cherished memory to his ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Charles was born on July 21, 1934, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Fred and Mildred (Smith) Sporing. He attended Northwood High School.
He began work for the Mason City Brickyard in 1950 as a laborer and then began driving truck for the brickyard, later becoming a yard foreman until his retirement in 1999.
Charles was united in marriage to Verna Hauge on July 17, 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They were married for over 51 years, recently renewing their vows at the Little Brown Church.
Charles enjoyed fishing, boating, water skiing, flying remote airplanes, and especially spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the River City Radio Control Club.
Charles is survived by his wife, Verna Sporing, of Mason City; two children: Charles Jr. (Marilyn) Sporing of Kensett, and Linda (Mike) Casey of Mason City; four grandchildren, Kristin (Mike) Snater of Kensett, Kendra Sporing and fiancé, Tim Best, of Mason City, Mike (Alicia) Casey Jr. of Shelbyville, Ky., and Melinda Casey and significant other, Keegan Hoffman, of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Violet Casey Jr. of Shelbyville, Ky; one sister, Mary (Francis) Formanek of Lemon Grove, Calif; and numerous cousins.

Gerald Pospichal
RICEVILLE — Gerald Pospichal died on Monday (Jan. 29, 2007) at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville, after a lengthly illness. He was 81 years of age.
Francis Gerald Pospichal was born on April 14, 1925, in Howard County, near Elma, Iowa, the son of Charles and Anna (McCarthy) Pospichal. He graduated from Immaculate High School in Elma, Iowa. In the fall of 1943, he entered the Army, being assigned to the Army Air Corps. While in the service, he attended the University of Cincinnati, and then served in the Western Pacific Theatre until 1945.
On Feb. 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Hentges at St. Bernard’s Church in Alta Vista. He ran a service station with his brother-in-law, Reynold Hentges, for five years after he and Mary Lou got married. Then, they moved to the farm, and Gerald started working for Oliver’s in Charles City. They moved into Riceville in 1970.
Gerald was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, the American Legion in Riceville and the V.F.W. in Alta Vista.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Lou, of Riceville, his children: Linda (Kelly) Wilkinson, of Cedar Rapids, Cindy Pospichal, of Mason City, Leo (Susan) Pospichal, of Delano, Minn., Laurie Pospichal (fiance Don Blaess) of Ridgeway, Mary (Linus) Luzum, of Calmar, Deb (Mike) Mayer, of Lakeville, Minn., and Joe, of Riceville; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn Riley, of Elma, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas; two brothers, Father Leo Pospichal and David Pospichal; and one sister, Marjorie Conway.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Riceville.

Shiela Kay Rostad was born May 21, 1938, in Davenport to Daisy Virginia (Collins) and Athy Winters Compton. She graduated from Davenport High School and furthered her education, receiving a B.A. degree from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn.
On June 12, 1965, in Waverly, Shiela was united in marriage to Donald William Rostad. The couple became the proud parents of two sons, Paul Johannes and John Mark.
For a period of time, Shiela and Don lived in North Carolina, then moved to Mason City in 1992. She worked at The Inn in Nora Springs as a prep employee, the Holiday Inn in Mason City and had also been employed as a paramedic for the city of Waverly. Shiela’s beloved Don died on Oct. 26, 1996.
In December of 1996, Shiela moved to Clear Lake, where she was employed as a clerk at Coastal Mart. Most recently, Shiela resided in Mason City and was employed at KIMT-TV since June 1, 1999, as a master control operator.
Shiela treasured her leisure time and special interests. She was a faithful attendee of the Temple Baptist Church in Mason City, enjoyed riding horses (English style), riding motorcycles, reading, socializing with friends, playing Scrabble, listening to music and singing in church. She also had a passion for watching “The Phantom of the Opera,” which she had intended to see on stage in Des Moines in the near future. Shiela had a green thumb for growing potted house plants and patio flowers and “cruising around town with Sam,” her pet dog and companion.
Shiela will be dearly and sadly missed by all who have shared in her life.
She is survived by her two sons, Paul J. (Tammy) Rostad, of Spring Lake, N.C., and John M. (Sheila) Rostad, of Hubert, N.C.; her three grandchildren, Natasha and Sabrina Rostad and Devin Rostad; her father, Athy (Celeste) Compton; her step-sister, Cheri Fahrenkrog; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Thelma Eugene Starkweather was born Jan. 16, 1920, near Powersville, Pleasant Grove Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Edwin LeRoy and Clara Belle (Stepp) Starkweather, and died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2007) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.
She received her education in the Coldwater No 2 Country School and graduated from the Greene Public Schools in 1936. As a young lady, she worked for Buchholz and Dralle Dept. Store and later for the B & W Grocery Store in Greene. She was last employed by the First State Bank of Greene as a bank teller until her retirement in 1968.
Thelma was a lifelong and faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Greene. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, going on bus trips and family genealogy.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mae Cleone Starkweather and Irene Starkweather; and one brother, Clair Starkweather.
Living family members include several nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Lowell “Bob” Gallagher, 78, of 816 S. Louisiana Ave., died Monday (Jan. 29, 2007) at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minn., from injuries he sustained from a fall.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue at the church one hour before the service.

Elsie Peterson Book
AMES — Elsie Peterson Book, 75, of Ames, died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2007) at the Mary Greeley Medical Center at Ames.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bethesda Lutheran Church at Jewell with the Rev. Michael Werner officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Jewell.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center in Webster City and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Elsie Eleanor Hendrickson, daughter of Daniel and Eleanor Dyvig Hendrickson, was born Dec. 4, 1931. On Sept. 8, 1953, she married Glenn Ardean Peterson at the Bethesda Lutheran Church at Jewell.
The couple resided on the Peterson family farm. They retired from farming in 1984 and continued to reside on the farm. Glenn died June 2, 1985.
She moved to Ames and was a cook at the Delta Zeta House. She was also house director at Sigma Epsilon and for 12 years at Alpha Kappa Lambda.
On June 12, 1993, she married Donald Book at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Jewell. The couple resided at Ames. Donald died Jan. 2, 1999. She continued to reside at Ames.
Elsie is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Glenda and Greg Richardson, of Forest City; Evelyn Holmstrom of Belvidere, Ill.; grandson, John Richardson of Pella; sisters, Doris Klaver of Webster City and Dorothy Frohling of Woolstock; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter in infancy; sister, Charlotte Faust; and brothers-in-law, Martin Faust, Richard Klaver and Bernard Klaver.
She was a former member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church and was a choir member and a member of circles of her church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family’s discretion.

KLEMME — Novella Bredbenner, 89, of Klemme, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2007) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Klemme United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St. in Klemme, and continue one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Helen J. Welch
MARBLE ROCK — Memorial services for Helen J. Welch, 90, formerly of 2905 Indigo Ave., Marble Rock, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock, with the Rev. Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Inurnment will be in the Westside Cemetery at a later date.
There will be no visitation as cremation has been accorded.
Helen J. Nixt was born March 17, 1916, in the home that she lived in her entire life in Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Joseph and Emma (Nikolas) Nixt. She died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2007) at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison.
She received her education and graduated from the Marble Rock Public Schools in 1933. As a young lady, she was a housekeeper and seamstress for families in the Marble Rock area.
She loved working in her large flower and vegetable garden. It’s been said that “if Helen couldn’t make it grow, it was not meant to grow!” She will be remembered as a good cook.
Living family members include her son, Larry (Shirley) Welch, of Marble Rock; her granddaughter, Teresa (Steve) Wells, of Marble Rock; and four great- grandchildren, Aaron Wells, Alyssa Wells, Anna Wells and Sadie Wells.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Dorothy Hayungs, Marion “Pinky” Smith and Virginia Kolbet; and two brothers, Frank Nixt and Leo Nixt.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Helen J. Welch Memorial Fund in care of the family.

William F. Cooper
OSAGE — William F. Cooper, 78, of Osage, died Monday (Jan. 29, 2007) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center emergency room in Osage.
Bill was born April 3, 1928, near Little Cedar, Iowa, the son of Frank and Ida (Jenkins) Cooper. He graduated from Little Cedar High School. He married Delores Gemaehlich in June of 1951. They later divorced. In 1965, Bill and his family moved to Kansas City, where he worked for TWA airlines.
He married Barbara Austin on April 16, 1977. In 1996, they moved to Osage, where he worked part-time at Food Pride. Bill and Barbara later divorced.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church.
Bill is survived by five children, Dean (Vickie) Cooper of Raytown, Mo., Connie (Bill) Miller, of Des Moines, Keith (Teresa) Cooper of Oak Grove, Mo., Gloria Maas of Grand River, and Lynn Cooper of Raytown, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Loreen Wilde-Seely, Barbara Barkhuff, and Darlene Smith.

CLARION — Shirley Kay Robinson, 67, of Mankato, Minn., and formerly of Clarion, died Monday (Jan. 29, 2007) at the Lake Crystal Health Care Center in Lake Crystal, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Clarion with Pastor Tim Platt officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

TITONKA — Emma A. Haack, 92, of Titonka, died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2007) at the Bartel’s Retirement Home in Waverly.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Titonka with Pastor Keith Tomlinson officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.
